Polk's Monitor Series has been the gold standard of speakers since the 1970's. This current generation features clear, accurate sound with strong bass and exceptional aural imaging. Polk made the enclosures to dampen case resonance. They've also included ¾" thick baffles to help produce clear, lifelike sound.
The dual 5.25" cones are made from a bi-laminate composite for an optimal balance of weight and rigidity. The small driver delivers a wide open sound and exceptional responsiveness. The 1" tweeter is a fabric/polymer composite which responds swiftly to the high efficiency Neodymium magnet. The crossovers between the drivers use Mylar bypass capacitors to let all of the details in the higher frequencies shine through.
No matter how good they sound, they have to look good, too. Their contemporary look compliments today's flat panel televisions and modern decorating styles. They're magnetically shielded so you can place them near your electronics. The slim design takes up less than one square foot.

Pros: Nice and sturdy. Nice highs, nice mids-upper lows. Bi-wire, bi-amp capable. Great imaging, nice soundfield. Full-sounding and most of all, price.
Cons: For 99.99 shipped, nothing. Newegg has these listed in the bookshelf area, but these are the floorstanders.
Other Thoughts: Pioneer vsx-918v HDMI receiver, PS3, Xbox360, HD-DVD player. I got everything dialed in with MCACC and they blended perfectly with my Polk Audio CSR center. Lossless sound with blu-ray and HD-DVD sounds amazing. Running them as large and it blends well with my sub. Great speakers, especially for the price paid.

Pros: Upgraded from smaller Polk Audio RT25's. Difference is night and day. Used with an Onkyo receiver with built in crossover to limit low end frequency for best results. Sound great.
Cons: Will still need a good sub for deep, pounding bass but for $200 for a a pair w/ free shipping I have nothing to complain about.
Other Thoughts: Wouldn't mind a second set for the surrounds.

Pros: Budget speakers that sound good, ie: good being relative to what you spend and what you may expect for your money. Acoustically, they have decent range, handle enough power for most living situations. There's enough lows for the avg TV audiophile viewer. Attractive design, finished well enough.
Cons: They're particle board constructed - chinese speakers and a cardboard tube port. Particle board construction makes them a bit on the heavy side but the weight is pared down by use of 3/8" thickness on the shells. Your best speakers will be constructed out of hardwood ply, like birch ply or typical tonal hardwoods. ie; not the best of materials, just functional ones.
The height of the speaker is likely so that the woofer and tweeter can be at a level the avg user is hearing the direct line of sound from the woofer/tweet drivers. I personally do not feel the acoustics are enhanced much by the extra tower height over a comparative center speaker like the CS-1. The porting diameter is a little larger, otherwise, what I hear out of it is pretty much same. They look similar to Yamaha, so they're probably made in the same factory with minor variants to construction and badged differently.
Other Thoughts: Weight was an issue in the handling of these during shipping. One was damaged. I would have declined it but it was left on my walkway w/o asking for a signature. I appealed to Newegg customer serv and they came through for me. Kudos to the service reps for taking care of their customer base.

Pros: good manufacturing quality and appearance - looks like you spend big bucks!
highs and midrange reproduced well
low frequency subdued
Cons: needs a subwoofer if it is to be a primary speaker
Other Thoughts: using a pair as extention speakers in the bedroom from my onkyo receiver in another room.
you may get equal sound from a much smaller speaker - i have klipsch surround speakers as well - but these look good and put the tweeter level with a seated person.
