3 out of 5 eggsFirst time buying refurbished...

Pros: Price: the price was incredibly low, almost like that "too good to be true* (see below). For 405$ including an additional 1 year warranty, that's a great deal, methinks.

Shipping: I completed my online order Thursday at 12 pm. I was unwrapping it the next afternoon before 1pm. Joygasm. The world needs faster shipping.

Windows 8: It isn't as bad as everyone made it out to be. Granted, I am used to much older OS (my last laptop I replaced with this was from the last century)

Misc: Lightweight in hand, stays crazy cool. Not quite fast enough to seamlessly mirror a page using google chromecast. It turns on fast (sometimes). Sound is decent, not too loud, but not super tinny or rich.

Cons: Misleading: The listing states that this device is a TOUCHSCREEN. Let me be clear. It is NOT. After sheepishly poking my screen like a simple minded fool for a couple minutes, I realized it must have been too good to be true. Not gonna lie, the touchscreen is what sold me (especially for the price)

Windows: The OS is constantly trying to update, restart, and it always fails. It also takes forever for it to realize that the update is doomed.

To be honest, the deception "hurts" the most. I keep re-reading the listing, hoping to find some text that proves I am a careless reader, but the first highlighted description on the page says: "Touchscreen notbook." Notbook. Does that mean it is NOT touchscreen, lol?

Other Thoughts: For what I paid, I am happy, if not slightly disappointed that it isn't touchscreen (which wouldve made it the purchase of the century). As a poor college student, this laptop is my savior and is unquestionably better than my 10 lbs Toshiba laptop predecessor from 1999. I haven't fully explored this computer, but it meets my basic needs and tight budget so far.

4 out of 5 eggsJust Received

Pros: Fast boot after initial setup, great appearance and mouse, keyboard response is great. Sleek and slim design and great DVD available on a newer laptop. Lots of hard drive space, sound is great.

Cons: THIS IS NOT A TOUCHSCREEEN LAPTOP AND THERE IS A FRENCH ONLY LANGUAGE INFORMATION STICKER LOCATED ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF TRACKPAD. The touchscreen was not a deal killer for me, but would have been nice to at least have that ability on this laptop.

3 out of 5 eggsFrench

Pros: Decent laptop for the price

Cons: The keyboard is bilingual, several keys also have french writing on them.

Other Thoughts: In another review an ASUS representitive states that the alternate writing are simply fn keys, however make no mistake that this keyboard has french writing on it.

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware

Pros: It is a good looking machine with a nice finish and full keyboard. Large hard drive

Cons: Windows 8, no support, no software, refurbished. Within a week of receiving the laptop it stopped working. It is stuck on Windows update loop and needs a full restore or boot. Want to restore the machine to OEM? You can't because there is no software included, no windows disc to boot from. I called ASUS support and was promptly put on hold. This is a completely unreliable machine. You get what you pay for I guess.

Other Thoughts: Don't skimp on a refurbished machine if you can. Buy a new product with support and software included. I am very unhappy with my purchase and will never buy a refurbished laptop again.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid for the price....

Pros: It has a very solid feel construction wise. I love the finish of the outside and around the keyboard, it is "brushed" so my finger prints do not appear. For the price you really cannot beat the specs of this laptop. I bought it mainly to do schoolwork on and take to class and it will be perfect for that use. The battery last a good while, I have seen better but I would say 4 hours average with the display dimmed and browsing the web.

The "IceCool" feature works pretty well, it stays at comfortable temperatures unlike other laptops i have owned.

The 8GB ram is nice, to me 4GB is not a comfortable amount to run Win 8 on and is a bare minimum. Most comparable laptops only include 4, which is easily upgradeable if you really want.

All in all if you are looking for a decent laptop to do schoolwork and browse the web, maybe watch some netflix on I would definitely pick this.

Cons: The only big thing I noticed and is the only thing keeping this from being 5 eggs is that the keyboard is 2 languages. It is a full US-QWERTY keyboard however it as green alternative letters on about half of the keys. I think it is French. It still functions like normal, it is more of an eyesore than anything. So be warned.

The only other downside will happen with any pre-built computer. All the bloatware and manufacturer software. I uninstalled basically everything that does not come on a fresh windows install. There is no Windows sticker anywhere on it with the key so reinstalling it would be more trouble that it would be worth. I would prefer Ubuntu but have to use certain programs for school that do not work properly on it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Brandon,

Thank you for the positive comments. I certainly understand your concern regarding the green alternative keys on the keyboard. These are hotkeys that allows you to access some system's features easily without launching or opening the software or application. Please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3771199 on the subject line.
