Don't trust for long term
- Pros: Low price (at the time). Good performance.
- Cons: Not reliable enough to use!!
- Other Thoughts: Have now two units both death. Initially thought it was the drives. Yet have the drives humming away in a computer. The cavalry units boards (electronics) seems to be the issue. How come we have these all fail yet a normal USB drive has lasted longer? So overall too much hassle in daily life to use. Suggest to look for better brand.
I have not lost any data though. Used them only via USB. eSata seemed to not work long term anyway..??
Popsicle Stick!!!
- Pros: Purchased this unit because it had a very competitive price, and at that time, reasonable reviews. I configured it as RAID 0, because I wanted the extra speed, and planned to do regular backups anyway.
Before I even finished loading all the data, about two weeks after purchase, and before I had a chthe drive became completely non-responsive. Nothing I tried got it to work - multiple computers, letting it 'cool' down, multiple resets, nothing worked.
- Cons: I called Cavalry Tech support, and the woman I talked to was friendly, knowledgeable, and ultimately completely unable to help me. She said that it sounded like the controller inside the housing had broken, and I could just take the drives out and use them without the external housing (which defeats the purpose) and that my data was probably fine. I had to explain to her three times that the data was striped before she understood. She told me that if I RMA'd the unit, my data would be lost, because "those guys just format the drives". She said my best bet would be to purchase another housing, with the caveat that it might not work because of different firmware versions. She sent me a link to a weird support website where I could buy a housing for almost $50!
- Other Thoughts: Ultimately, I decided not to spend another $50 on the very device that broke after two weeks. I was frustrated and just put the thing on the shelf and forgot about it. A few months later (i.e. now) I decided to take it apart to salvage the two 1TB drives and use them inside my server.
When I opened up the case and took the drives out, I found a BROKEN POPSICLE STICK being used as a shim to separate the drives - to keep them frojm touching!
Let me repeat that: A BROKEN POPSICLE STICK!
Apparently, Cavalry can't even make their main product line correctly.
BROKEN POPSICLE STICK!
I'll never buy another Cavalry product.
(The drives are running fine.)
Works Well
- Pros: No problems with it working in either eSata or USB. Good RAID 0 performance using eSata.
- Cons: I had to set the Raid configuration and format it with the USB connection. After that it worked fine connected to a eSata port.
