How to take the drive out
- Pros: Cheap. The hard drive inside is WD3200BEVT 320G 8M cache, SATA-2, which by itself sells for more than the price of this enclosure. After I swapped it into my Thinkpad T60, the read speed is higher than 60MB/s! And to assure you guys eager to try - I am able to use my old 80GB Samsung drive in this one. Very reliable. After I took it apart I found the inside of the enclosure beautifully designed and of very good quality. The USB connection speed is satisfactory, too.
- Cons: The enclosure catches fingerprints. It is not that easy to take it apart. Still bigger than some 3rd-party enclosures.
- Other Thoughts: You can see the case is made of two parts: a big U-shaped plastic that looks like the the front and back covers of a small book, and a (also U-shaped) narrow stripe that closes the gap between the two leaves. First, pry open the seals (I used a slotted screwdriver, but covered it with scotch tape so it won't scratch the case) until you can to some extent "open" the book slightly; then hold the narrow U-shaped piece and pull - right, just pull it out from the side. After that everything should be fairly easy to figure out.
320Gb Storage
- Pros: I have used WD Passport external drives for 3 years and have never been disappointed. I love the small size, portability, and reliabiilty. Great for backups or keeping all your iTunes music external. USB-powered so no external power supply.
- Cons: WD needs to move away from the shiny black gloss finish that scratches and shows fingerprints, to a flat black/matte finish. I'm not sure about the colored versions.
- Other Thoughts: Will WD ever produce a faster version? Moving form 5400 to 7200 would make this drive an awesome piece of backup hardware.

Solid
- Pros: This drive works like a hard drive should. It stores data. Sure, it could be faster, but it's USB. It is what it is.
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: Fingerprints? This is an issue? I've never even looked at the outside of the drive. It sits on top of my case and acts as a nice little backup drive for stuff I don't want to lose, or don't access that often. This was a solid little purchase.
Haed Drive Fail
- Pros: Nice Size... small
- Cons: DOA after 1 month... all of a sudden won't show up on any of 3 machines in my house. Plug it in and windows doesn't see anything!
Uses a lot of power
- Pros: Sleek-looking, glossy-black finish and very portable size. Decent price for the capacity. Comes with optional encrytion software written on drive.
- Cons: The Passports apparently demand a lot of power from the computer's USB bus. I plugged it in and it effectively crashed my computer. Then when I got it to work I received nothing but write delay failures when copying data. Finally realized that it was overpowering my USB bus. Unplugged every other USB device and STILL received multiple copying errors but could at least copy data. Only after plugging into powered USB hub did it work properly.
- Other Thoughts: I REALLY wish that these Passports came with a self-powering option with an A/C adapter, like the My Books do. Used My Book with my computer and didn't experience any difficulties at all. Passports should be designed allowing the user the option for either self- or bus-powered use.
