Not a quantum leap over a 32M cache 7200k
- Pros: The fastest consumer desktop SATA hard drive money can buy. I was expecting a bit more speed, however, all in all this is a pretty good drive. Runs very cool, cooler than my 750GB caviar black I use now as a storage drive since I got the raptor. I also think its pretty quiet for the most part as I cannot hear it over my case fans, which are of medium loudness.
- Cons: To me 230$ is a bit hard to swallow for the incremental performance over a fast, modern 7200K 32M drive. I gave this 4 starts simply because of its price/performance. Here are some quick results using HD Tune 2.55 vs. my WD 750GB WD7501AALS caviar black.
Average Transfer rate: VelociRaptor - 101.4 MB/s 750GB Caviar Black - 90.5 MB/s
Burst Rate: VelociRaptor - 182.2 MB/s 750GB Caviar Black - 143.1 MB/s
Access Time: VelociRaptor - 7.0ms 750GB Caviar Black - 11.1ms
Modern 32MB cached 7200k drives like a WD Caviar Black series are not too far behind the velociraptor in benchmarked speed and you will be hard pressed to notice a real world difference.
- Other Thoughts: Price is kinda steep for marginal speed increase over a 32MB cached caviar black. Makes you want to think about shelling out some more $$ and just take the SSD plunge. A newer SSD like the new OCZ Vertex or even Intel's SSDs wipe the floor with a conventional HD like a VelociRaptor. In my humble opinion, unless you have money to burn and don't want to get an SSD, pass on a velociraptor and get a large capacity 32MB cached Caviar Black as you will notice zero real world performance difference, save a lot of money and have much greater capacity. Again the VelociRaptor is a great fast SATA drive, but after my experience, when the rubber meets the road, this drive is not at all worth the price premium over a fast 7200k drive. If extreme storage speed is what your after, especially a drive that will serve as a boot drive or gaming drive, nothing short of a new high performance SSD will satisfy you.
Proper power & SATA location to Work with Removable Trays!
- Pros: Great quiet, fast drive. WILL WORK WITH REMOVABLE BAYS, such as IcyDocks!
SEE OTHER THOUGTS
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: This is the identical drive to the WD3000GLFS 300GB except that is has the power and SATA connections located in the same place as regular 3.5" drives have theirs. The benefit to this is that you can use these drives in removable bays, where you cannot do that with the WD3000GLFS since the power and SATA connections for that drive are more centered and NOT in the locations that regular 3.5" drives have their power and SATA connections.

Fast
- Pros: At first my BIOS didnt see it, but i was able to disable the marvell and the error message went away. Installed win7 ult 64 bit in about 12 min. Works great
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: WD All the way
Drops from RAID
- Pros: Fast.
- Cons: Drops from RAID array on a regular basis.
- Other Thoughts: I put these in a DELL PE2900 with PERC6i. Worked fine for 6 months. Then, drives randomly drop from the RAID-10 array. The frequency increased to every 2-3 days. Dell replaced the PERC6i with a newer model. No difference. These drives are VERY picky about the RAID controller that they will work with. (NOTE: The Intel is listed on the WD compatibility list but others report drives drop on the 49th day. So even it's listed, it's not a given.)
Worth the price?
- Pros: - Performs well. According to most benchmarks I've seen it's the fastest hard disk drive you can buy.
- I do not find it to be noticeably load, do not hear it spinning up at all, but I have a mid-tower with a half dozen large fans on it. I am accustomed to and enjoy the hum of a performance computer. It's like a throaty exhaust on a V8 muscle car. ;) So I guess noise is relative.
- I expected it to run hotter than it is. A thermistor placed just below the drive in a cramped internal bay never registed over 30C. This is not the drive operating temp, but at least it did not heat up that area of the case significantly when running. I have pretty good airflow in this case (NZXT Guardian 921), but no air moving through the drive bays.
- Cons: From what I can see, gaming, surfing, accessing and transferring large files between drives... it works about as well as the last 7200 RPM drive I used. I guess it would have been nice to see a noticeable difference, if I am paying 200 dollars for only 300GB of capacity.
- A higher capacity version of this drive at the same price point would be more worthwhile. Limitting your OS/application drive at 300 GB for a minor performance bump doesn't seem worth it at this price, when a 1TB Caviar Black will do just as good service for half the price (I also have a couple of those and I love them).
- My Windows 7 Experience data transfer rating stayed at 5.9 when switching from a 320GB 7200 RPM drive to this one. That surprised me a bit.
- Other Thoughts: Over-priced for what it is, in my opinion. If you are doing something super data intensive, maybe this would be a time saver. I haven't found 3D gaming to benefit at all from changing between this drive and the previous run-of-the-mill 320GB 7200 RPM drive (tested so far with Fallout 3, Modern Warfare 2, ARMA II, GTA IV, Battlefield 2, Borderlands). I don't think I could justify the cost of buying another one.
