The pureDrive from AcomData gives you the choice of fast or really fast for data transfers. You can use the 480Mbps USB 2.0 connection or the 1.5Gb/s eSATA connection. Either way, the 16MB cache buffer and 7200RPM of the 1TB drive will let it keep up so you don't have to worry about it bogging things down.
Pros: Runs cool (cooler than body temperature). No fans. Very quiet (I don't even hear the heads moving unless I put my ear up to the case). Nice looking case (dull metal with black trim). Small (only a little larger than a 3.5" internal HD). Works perfectly.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: The drive inside is a WD10EACS (which is a very nice HD). It comes pre-formatted as FAT32 so you will want to re-format as NTFS, etc., if you intend to store any files larger than 4GB. A "quick format" is sufficient and only takes a few minutes.

Exceptional value

Pros: I connected this unit along with my WD 1TB to the USB ports (the holiday loaner Compaq Evo N1000v was not my best choice of equipment to test this self dealt new year gift) to get a sense if it was really worth for me to agonize over the 100+ reviews on this site and another 60+at other vendor’s site. Here are the facts: 1. Powered up the unit 6:00 p.m. December 31st. 2. From that point forward; reformatted for NTSF and I copied all the files I had from WD to PD (433 GB, 489,291 files in 62,899 folders.) 3. Run duplicate file check, empty folder check, defragment, etc. 4. During this time span (up until an hour ago, 11:00 p.m. January 4, 2009) I never powered down the unit, i.e. it has been operating non-stop for over 101 hours, and still is as I type my review.
Noise: Negligible to none. Heat: Barely warmed up (but laid it on sideway on top of an old metal case router, just in case). Access Rate: Instantaneous, can hardly wait to test it on my eSATA capable desktop.
Cons: Should include the eSATA cable, those who are willing to purchase this product were most probably interested in this feature (I certainly was looking for that capability), so why be cheap about it?
Other Thoughts: Unfortunately I do share the sentiments of few of the negative review providers. Even though I have shopped at Newegg many times I am not so thrilled about their “Rebate” procedures, furthermore their response to such negative experiences is almost nonexistent, they just do not reply. I have been shortchanged before on supposedly “Rebate Submission” procedures, something around $40~60 so this time I decided to window shop and purchase from another vendor, with no rebate promise at the same base price. Point is: 1. It is service that matters, rest is all a commodity. 2. Products may fail, for many reasons, and that’s OK, as long as it does not cross over the 99.99% quality expectation. Once again, how well and how fast the problem is taken care of defines the # of eggs in the basket.

Pros: The drive is well made and performs well. I have had this for well over a year and I love it.
Cons: I have had no cons with this drive. I would buy another one if it weren't for the fact that there are higher capacity drives these days.
Other Thoughts: I have only used the USB interface and not the eSATA interface, so I can't say anything about that. Other reviews say it gets hot, and yes, it does, but that would be how the heat dissipates (not sure how else you want it to).

Reliable drive...

Pros: Aluminum enclosure adequately keeps drive at reasonable temperatures during non-stop use. Beefy AC adapter, solid construction. Fanless design is a bonus, not a detriment. Designs that rely on a tiny fan are at the mercy of the fan's reliability (which is very low). The two that I own also have 1394 (firewire) as well as USB 2.0 and eSATA connections. Hefty, solid design can be used to knock vicious dogs and muggers unconscious when needed.
Cons: None that I've found.
Other Thoughts: I use two of these plus two of the 320gb models primarily for a large mp3 library on my DJ rigs. They are run non-stop for hours on end. Yes, they get warm, but I'd hardly call it "hot"... I have yet to have one so much as stutter. They're subjected to outrageous vibrations from the subwoofer cabinets powered by 900W amplifiers, but the screws haven't come loose and the WD drives inside don't seem to mind.
