Pros: This is a great entry level DSLR camera. I'm amazed at the quality of the pictures it can produce, even on auto mode. They can look just as good as pictures taken by much more expensive cameras. I've read complaints that it's not good for low light, but if you know what you're doing and change some manual settings you can get amazing pictures in just about any condition. I've gotten some great night pictures.
I really like the layout of the buttons more than some other cameras I've tried out.
Being able to use different lenses is awesome! It's a huge improvement over a point and shoot camera.
Cons: Not much about this camera that I don't like. However, when left on auto the camera will set the ISO really high in low light causing pictures to be a bit grainy looking. This can easily be fixed by manually setting a lower ISO like 400 or 800.
This camera can use older lenses but won't autofocus on a lot of them, so keep it in mind when buying a lens. Any of the Nikon G lenses are fine.
Other Thoughts: I'm a college student and couldn't afford one of the more expensive cameras so I decided to go with this one. I'm very happy with my choice.
I got a 35mm f1.8 lens to go with this camera and I highly recommend it. It's great for portraits and low light.
* Get a UV filter to protect the lens! They are relatively cheap and you won't regret it.

Whatta Camera!

Pros: Beautiful pictures, which everyone will tell you. This thing is fantastic. The professional level you can obtain simply by using this camera on auto-everything makes any point-and-shoot pale in comparison. Great starter for the DSLR market, and Nikon is the way to go, most assuredly.
Interchangable lenses are friggen awesome. Expensive, but awesome. I have been looking for old-school lenses from pawn shops locally and finding the occassional gem, so I'd advise if you want to play around with the thing, that's the way to do it. However, some will not work. There are lots of online tutorials on this to tell you what's out there and what should and shouldn't work.
This thing makes taking a bad shot difficult. The burst-mode this thing offers in good-lighting conditions blows my mind, and is all-too-capable of picking up every little bit of motion you can throw at it.
Cons: The viewfinder doesn't show pictures in real-time when you're about to take them. If you're old-school like me, this isn't a con, so much as a trait that was trained by point-and-shoot picture-taking.
The on-board filters are a little hard to use and hard to get results from, however, they are just on-the-fly, so honestly, you can't ask much when your camera does things that only photoshop did five years ago.
The lens compitbility isn't very clearly outlined on the Nikon site. I have been using some old-school 35mm lenses and they are working fine -- you have to set the apeture to the hard-max on the lens, but after that, things are cake. If this were more clear on the Nikon site, things might be easier to order and work with in general. Also, a list of "approved" lens-makers would be nice. Some brands are better than others, and as a company, educating your consumer is one of the best ways to keep them your customer.
Other Thoughts: I wouldn't advise taking high-resolution pictures of the food you're about to eat if you're playing with this camera. A quick zoom-in will show you everything you're about to eat, and when I say "everything," I mean "EVERYTHING." Also, some macro lenses are a little tedious to get off of the camera body that aren't listed as compatible. Is that why they aren't listed as compatible, Nikon? If that's the case, why do they still work like a charm?
If you are thinking about diving into the DSLR market, this is the camera to choose: you will not regret your purchase.

My first DSLR, could not be happier...

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Fairly easy to use with enough options to dabble into some tricky and "pro-like" photography. The pictures considerably better than any P&S camera I have ever used. Low light performance could be better, but it you play enough with the custom options, any shot can be achieved with acceptable results. Great beginner DSLR and well worth the price!
Cons: The more I get into this type of photography the more I will realize the shortcomings of this very nice camera. Sure, there is better equipment out there for considerably more money, but at this point, this suits me just fine. If you've never owned a DSLR, buy one now! Difference is night and day!
