The WL-520GU wireless router from Asus deserves the word "versatile" in its name. It distinguishes itself from others by adding a built-in printer server, bringing today’s digital home and digital office a simply solution to share MFP printing and scanning functions for multiple users.
This router uses the 802.11g wireless standard, which is backwards compatible with the older 802.11b standard, allowing it to work with a wide range of Wi-Fi-enabled equipment. Asus BroadRange technology provide faster data transfer speeds and better wireless coverage than standard 802.11g, so each user can enjoy the fast wireless access within the range.
Setup is fast and effortless with the easy-to-use ASUS EZ UI, composed of a number of connectivity features including QIS (Quick Internet Setup), Network Map, Dr.Surf, EZQos, 125 High Speed Mode and WDS.

runs tomato like a champ
- Pros: Flashed it with Tomato in about 5 mins. Nice wireless, small and efficient (pulls 3 watts from the wall--I checked), good build quality. Fast processor (240 mhz) and decent amount of flash + ram. Really cheap w/rebate.
- Cons: The stock firmware is a complete joke; if Asus were smart they'd fire the people they hired to make that stuff and just use an open-source firmware package. Without tomato, I'd rate this thing 1 to 2 stars. Flashing w/Tomato or DD-WRT is essential.
- Other Thoughts: Great deal--will make your network rock solid w/tomato
Nothing Short Of Incredible
- Pros: This router, combined with DD-WRT firmware, has far too many positive aspects to effectively list them all here.
However, I suppose the main pro would be how easy this router makes it flash the DD-WRT firmware in the first place. Furthermore, should something go wrong while flashing DD-WRT the WL-520gU has a backup copy of the original firmware that is restored automatically, by a lower level firmware (a BIOS, of sorts).
Once that firmware is installed the WL-520gU's potential is limitless. As an example, right now I'm running two of these routers, with a site-to-site SSL bridged VPN between them.
This router also has support for USB devices, including USB external hard drives if you use the correct version of DD-WRT, which means this router can effectively become a network file storage device.
Finally, with DD-WRT this router has been completely stable for more than six months, even with the advanced features I use. As icing on the cake, the router also looks great.
- Cons: This device has very few real downsides. However, in the interest of completeness....
This router is B/G wireless compatible only. No wireless N here. But then, thats hardly surprising considering the price.
The WL-520gU could also stand to have a faster processor than its current 240mhz Broadcom chip, as the VPN link I mentioned above, when under heavy usage, takes the processor usage to 100% and I hit a speed cap of around 350-400 kilobytes/second simply because the router can't handle any more. That said, just about every router in this price range has a processor in the 200mhz range, so this flaw isn't unique to the WL-520gU. Finally, it wouldn't hurt to have more than 4 megabytes of integrated flash storage, because right now this router can't handle the larger DD-WRT releases.
- Other Thoughts: Overall, this is an absolutely fantastic router with the DD-WRT firmware. It has continuously surprised me not with its feature-set, but also its stability. Neither of my two WL-520gU's have crashed once in the 6 months I've been using them.
I've heard some negative opinions of the stock firmware that comes with this router, but I must admit I looked at the stock firmware for a whole 5 minutes before flashing DD-WRT, so I don't exactly have any first hand experience with it.
Either way though, its so extremely simple to flash DD-WRT that I can't see any reason why someone wouldn't use it with this router.
If you can live without wireless N, and you need an extremely stable router with a large number of features for a ridiculously small price, then this router might just be for you.

Owned for 1.5yrs
- Pros: The stability of the router is something that should be acknowledged before all other things. I chose the tomato flavor of Roms and haven't looked back. Speed is great and functionality with tomato is amazing. This router has been left untouched for almost 9 months.
- Cons: A little more Rom memory would've been nice for the bigger
DD-WRT packages but the installation of tomato I have is rock solid
- Other Thoughts: Asus is a company that has it's highs and lows but with this model they did it right and I thank them. I own many Asus products and this one is my favorite. :)
Do not use with Charter Communications
- Pros: Very nice user interface.
- Cons: Refused to properly hold onto Dynamic IP from Charter Communication (cable) broadband. Any time I had to power it off, getting it reconnected was nearly impossible. This last time I had enough and replaced it.
- Other Thoughts: There is a single post I found online that says they were able to resolve their Charter connection issue by installing Tomato. I performed the same steps and still am unable to use this router. Seek another router if you use Charter.
Great router, great price
- Pros: Works well right out of the box with many features. Works great with dd-wrt too!
- Cons: None so far.
- Other Thoughts: I've owned at least 5 linksys wrt54g routers before and they all seem to brick on me. I decided to go a different route this time and I'm happy I did. Supports dd-wrt really well and has been every bit as solid as the (working) wrt54g and hasn't bricked yet so thats a bonus!
