Trucker Review
- Pros: Screen is easy to read, despite it's compact size. Auto brightness function works well. Easy to read in direct sunlight. Huge POI database. Detour function seems to work well. Window mount is rock solid (follow directions). Satellite acquisition is fast, and the signal is very reliable. Maintained a signal all the way through the Ft McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore. Maps are remarkably up to date, even in industrial areas where the roads/names are ever changing. Route calculation from city to city is practical and efficient.
- Cons: Carrying case, AC charger and data cable are sold separately. Menus aren't very logical or clear as to where they go. You'll be hunting until you learn your way through it. The ETA displayed on the map screen is based on a speed that is not configurable, and no option to display anything else of use there, like heading or speed. Useless to truckers. Lack of truck routing. When you scan through the places saved in your Favorites, it lists the street addresses, but not the city. You'll have to put the city in the name of the place if you want to be able to quickly find what you're looking for. Only allows one via point in your routing. Only allows 500 places stored in Favorites (that will fill up quickly). Doesn't give direction of next turn/exit soon enough for a truck, sometimes.
- Other Thoughts: This is just based on my first week of trucking with the Garmin, logging 3400 miles. I also use the CoPilot Truck Laptop version for truck routing. Using them together, getting to my customers was a breeze. Though the Garmin doesn't have truck routing, choosing fastest instead of shortest will keep you on the truck route most of the time. Another big plus is being able to disallow u-turns. Maps are suprisingly accurate compared to my trucking software. The picture viewer is a waste of space and has no place in a navigation device. The world clock could also be replaced with something more useful, like a zoomable time zone map. Overall, if you drive a 4 wheeler, consider this a 5 egger. It's probably everything you need. If you travel for a living, you're going to find yourself wondering why they didn't make better use of some of it's capabilities. It still gets a solid 4 out of 5. I have no regrets with this purchase, so far... Hello, Garmin. 3 million truckers are waiting... ;)
garmin 250W
- Pros: Excellent unit. Great, wide, clear screen. Vibrant color. Good database. Easy to use.
- Cons: Takes a little bit to acquire signal on occasion, but nothing major.
- Other Thoughts: I did my research before buying a GPS unit, and this unit was perfect! Very easy to use, great clear screen, accurate to within 20 ft, what else could you ask for.
By far, the best bang for your buck, and I did about 2 months worth of researching before deciding which one to get!

Does the Job
- Pros: Great, wide, clear screen. Good database, new maps 2009 updated when frst connnected to the web site. Easy to use. Does the job.
- Cons: It turned off completely, take some time to aquire, just plan ahead.
- Other Thoughts: I researched much before buying this unit was perfect! Very easy to use, latge clear screen, I have no need for Bluetooth or Text to speech. Best bang for the buck.
Lost In Space
- Pros: Basic unit - no frills. That is what I wanted and what I got. Nice screen.
- Cons: I live in central Canada and have made a few trips to Texas. At one point in the first trip wanted me to turn left (I was going over a bridge at the time) oops. There had been more than a few map errors so I spent the 70.00 and upgraded to Maps 2009. Worked OK for Texas trips but in southern Ontario I was in the ditch for 20 miles on an older highway. No excuse for these errors. Wants to argue with you if you don't take the route it wants in areas where you know the roads.
- Other Thoughts: City addresses seem to be working satisfactorily. I was surprised at the errors on major highways. Not sure if all Garmin units would be like this one but I would not buy this model again.
