2 out of 5 eggsNot really as dual as you think

Pros: Solid metal build, accepts 2 drives as advertised

Cons: Main con: you can't copy from one SSD to the other in this thing. Sure, it uses 2 separate SATA cables to attach to the motherboard, and only one SATA power cable. Copy speeds run typical SATA speeds, under 280 mB/s (yes, am using SATA III system and good cables). However, if you want to copy large folders from one SSD to another within this thing, it does a few files and then locks. I've tried switching cables to different ports, but it doesn't matter. I have to physically remove one SSD from this and put it into another bay to get them to copy to each other. Very disappointing.

Other Thoughts: Will try to contact company. Gave it 2 stars rather than 1 because of solid build and with rebate was sub- $10

1 out of 5 eggsDon't do it...

Pros: none I can see.

Cons: Gone through 3 of these so far, none work.
Broke the handle off the previous model, bought this one thinking it was better.. Not !
Installed my pre-existing SSD RAID 0 into this this thing and messed it up, would not boot no matter what.
Removed the drives from the "enclosure" and Finally got them working again. NFG.

2 out of 5 eggsspeed compromised

Pros: hot-swap

Cons: Seq speed is compromised, especially read. Tested with As ssd benchmart on Win 7 64 bit. Without the cage, read speed is over 490 MB/s and overall score is over 900, with thr cage, 240 MB/s, overall score around 600. Write sped is afected as well. Tested on 2 ssds, one pny optimo 240 gb, the other Samsung evo 240 gb, similar result.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent!

Pros: I have purchased four over the past year, or so, and I love these units! Nice, compact install for two SSDs, using a single power connector. I hate waiting, so use these to install two SSDs in RAID 0 or 1, depending on situation. I've had no problems using them with Corsair, Toshiba, Samsung 840 and 850 series drives. The levers eject the drives smoothly and easily, if a change is required. The action is firm, and without slop. Solid construction.

Cons: The only option I'd like to see is elimination of the keys. A simple tiny lever to secure the latch would be bonaroo, but not really necessary. Closing the lever is sufficient, without using the key lock...just a personal quirk about leaving things less secure (from inadvertent actions, not thievery) than it could be.

Other Thoughts: I find some of the complaints astonishing. I would hate to be a manufacturer of computer components, as no matter how simple and well engineered a product is, there are a passel of simpletons styling themselves Einsteins, that exhibit an extraordinary ability to screw up what most deem unscrewuppable!

1 out of 5 eggsVery Dangerous Design

Pros: Nice aluminum case, Inexpensive

Cons: I have used IStar chassis in the past without problems, this is not the case with this model which suffers from a critical design flaw. If you're using a 9.5mm SSD maybe it wouldn't be an issue, however if you are using a 7mm SSD like the Samsung 840's it leaves 2.5mm of wiggle room, because of that it either misses the rear connector completely or partially which has the potential to break the rear connector on the SSD, consider the consequences if as in my case the SSD already has data and is used as the primary boot device for our ERP Server... Ouch!. I purchased 2 of these, one was DOA, the other which did work after taking it apart to find out what the trouble was although left me with the distinct impression that even working if I swap drives would be too unreliable, which defeats the purpose of the unit. IStar should know better...

Other Thoughts: The front latches don't actually latch and wiggle... It doesn't matter how inexpensive a product is... If it doesn't work it's still too much... I read another review that mentioned these same problems, but disregarded as perhaps an unskilled user... 25 years in IT and 100's of computer builds, I can attest to these flaws VERY POOR DESIGN... move along...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer:

Thank you for the review on the compatibility issue with 7mm SSD. Although it is clearly stated on our website that the drive cage is compatible with 9mm SSD and not 7mm SSD, we realized that Newegg did not reflect that information on their website and thus, could have potentially caused the situation and the negative experience with our product. We are working with Newegg to update their website to prevent future issues with other customers. Thanks again for the kind reminder and review and as any experienced IT professional as yourself (tech level of 5) would know, always double check with manufacture website for most updated compatibility information prior to purchasing.

By the way, if the latch is loose please kindly contact our tech support for replacement. If it doesn't work, i.e., won't close or lock, please kindly clarify.

Thank you,

4 out of 5 eggsSeems to Work Well

Pros: Looks good, seems to work well but I haven't really stressed it or anything.

Cons: One of my LEDs is backwards, It lights amber when idle, and flashes green when accessed. The other one is just the opposite.

Other Thoughts: There's a switch to turn the LEDs off if you don't like 'em.

5 out of 5 eggsBest 2.5" Mobile Rack for SATA III SSD

Pros: LED indicates: Green for power and Orange for access
Access LED doesn't require a separate cable like some others do.

Compatible with SATA III and 6.0 Gbps transfer mode works fine.

Cons: The door knob may need a little adjustment but it's easy to do so with a philips screw driver.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: Well constructed! Drive bay works great, tried it with a few different 2.5" drives I had laying around

The little lock on the doors helps avoid mistakenly opening a drive bay while it is in use. I have one bay running all the time and the second I use as hot swap for other drives and imaging purposes. Would also come in handy if you have kids I guess.

I love the on/off switch for the HDD activity lights on the front.

The aluminum helps with heat dissipation.

Cons: Mine does not eject the drives very far and it is kind of a pain to grab them and pull them out. That is a minor annoyance to me because I have this installed in my home server and don't remove the drives that often.

Other Thoughts: What's with the go fast racing stripe down the top?? Well who cares, I like it. : )

5 out of 5 eggsSimple idea - Awesome tech

Pros: Quick to implement into my Antec Sonata case. Through a pair of Samsung 840 Pro's in and have been running great ever since. I will be adding this to all of my builds going forward.

Cons: n/a

Other Thoughts: I had to use SATA straight connection cables as my modular cage for 3.5" bay negated the use of elbowed connectors.

4 out of 5 eggsworks fine

Pros: It works as expected.

Cons: One of the SATA connector becomes loose (I cannot feel the locking "click" anymore) after a few plugging/unplugging, so I have to be careful when connecting the cable to it.

Other Thoughts: First time using a hot-swap cage, it's really convenient.
