Rating + 5 Works

Pros: Same pros as my last review. I got one from newegg mostly for the cost savings. I have copied 150gb of data to it so far so it is working. As with any drive it will most likely fail in the first month or it will last for years. The one i got is firmware cc38 made in China.

Cons: no cons so far.. oem drives only have a 3 year warranty

Other Thoughts: This is a bare oem drive, no screws, sata cable, jumper, power adapter or software. I think most people know this by now but every now and then someone still doesn't know. I was leery of buying a hard drive from newegg but it came in an anti-static bag wrapped in thick layer of bubble wrap with packing peanuts in the box. Seems to have made it from CA to VA without damage.

Pros: Great Hard drive for the price, performs flawlessly even after a year and a half of running almost non-stop, the computer has been shut down for a total of maybe 3 days over the last year and a half. Drive stays fairly cool even under high load conditions. and to date have had no error's with drive whats-so-ever

Cons: did take nearly 9 hours to format the drive when i first received it

Rating + 5 So far so good

Pros: Doing good so far , seagate use to be my go to guy for hard drives but has let me down of late. This drive has good size, decent cache and low price.

Cons: Seagate was not good to me in 08 and early 09 started going WD but will see how this one does. Customer hasn't complain yet.

Other Thoughts: Seagate was the topdog for several years but then not so good years followed. Went to WD a couple years and have had good luck so far.

Rating + 3 Disappointing

Pros: When it works, very quiet and very fast. Good tech support. 5 year warranty.

Cons: I've seen no information about this problem.
I've had this drive installed for 3 months. All's well at first, then it failed, with symptoms that looked like a PS failure. It would no longer be recognized by the BIOS. After extensive checking, I discovered that many of these 7200.11 drives were subjected to a bad firmware flash, and that they are failing in droves. I checked w/Seagate tech support who confirmed that this was possibly the problem and offered to have the drive analyzed by their sudsidiary, i365, at no cost. If it was found that this was the problem, they would reflash the drive and return it. After they received the drive, they were VERY good at keeping me informed of the status. It turned out that this was the problem and I received the drive back. It seems to be running fine. It should be noticed that this was a non-destructive process and all of the data was not disturbed.

Other Thoughts: I was really surprised that there was no mention of this problem that I could find on the Seagate website. Could have saved a LOT of aggravation.
If you do take advantage of this process, bear in mind that they require a signature upon delivery.

Rating + 5 FAST

Pros: Single disc inside drive allows for ultra fast transactions, even with the 16mb cache this drive keeps up with multi disc hard drives with 32mb cache. And since its only 1 disc, crashes are less likely and heat is way less! Scored 5.9 in windows vista and 7!

Cons: Not a 1

Other Thoughts: Great for gamers, photo/ video edit, music ripping/ making and video making! Get this now for an improved performance!

Rating + 1 got another bad one

Pros: This is the second bad segate drive that I have RMA'ed and they just returned back to me another defective drive! Are defective 7200.12 drives all they have in stock now?

Cons: Cons... cons... I think Seagate are the the cons

Other Thoughts: How could a company possibley send back a defective drive twice, and still have any face?! I would not even take a seagate for free, they lost a customer forever.

Rating + 3 Bumpy start

Pros: After receiving one that works, it's pretty fast and pretty quiet.

Cons: The first one was DOA and I had to pay to ship it back to newegg. I would have been better off buying it at the local store and taking it back there if I had a problem. After paying return shipping, the local store would have been cheaper. But hey, you can't get lucky all the time.

Other Thoughts: I'm hoping that the drive is reliable, the first one being DOA does not inspire confidence.

Rating + 5 I'm going to buy more

Pros: Thin, light, good value

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I am using two of these in a RAID 1 on my home server and plan to get 3 more for a RAID 5, or maybe 2 more and put them all in a RAID 10. I like that Seagate states on their website that these drives are good for RAID, where as some competitors (Eastern Analog) make you pay more for a drive that is RAID compatible.

The drives are thinner than most 3.5" drives, so they can be placed in hotswap bays, or anywhere else really, and have more room for airflow around them than other drives. The drives are also light, which can make a difference when you have 5 of them in one cage.

Seagate drives are very much my drive of choice. I have purchased my last 9 hard drives from them and I have been very satisfied.

Rating + 5 Works great

Pros: Seems to work fine. I got mine at a store to get the retail warranty. Mine is firmware cc35 made in Thailand. They also has some made in China. Don't know if that makes a difference or not. I copied 150 GB of data over from a 5 year old WD that was starting to get flaky. Everything seems fine so far will keep both drives up for about a month just in case this one fails.

Cons: Retail version cost more. Retail version comes with sata cable, molex to sata power cable, jumper, and screws.

Other Thoughts: I was scared off from buying from newegg over all the horror stories on newegg's shipping of bare oem drives. Newegg if you are listening you need to come up with a better way to ship bare drives. You lost a sale over word of mouth of your poor hard drive shipping.

Rating + 1 No good for RAID

Pros: Decent price, fast shipping and good speeds overall (for the price).

Cons: 3 of the 4 drives I purchased keep degrading in my RAID 10. I've tested the drives indvidually, and they all come back fine. After reading online, I found that the 7200.11 drives were notorious for issues with RAID. Apparently, that still holds true.

Other Thoughts: I wanted RAID 10 for redundancy and speed. With all the trouble I've had, I can't recommend these drives - especially not for RAID! Also, the only rendundancy is me having to keep rebuilding the darn array. Ugh.

Pros: Quiet as a mouse, plenty fast, runs cool (30-35 C in front of my intake fan), good price/storage ratio.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I've had a Seagate as my system drive for a little over a year now and it still runs fine. I had a WD 320 gb for media, but it failed after a few months, so I got one of these to replace it. I plan on making a RAID with another one of these drives soon.

Rating + 4 ST3500418AS

Pros: Very fast, Makes my old IDE drive look like a printer. Very slim compared to the old drive and just seems like it can take a hit without nothing happening to it (Thankfully it looks like it can with the ups shipping)

Cons: Shipping, O lordy was it horrible, they packed it in the smallest box, wrapped it in bubble wrap, 1 layer i might add. The box looked like they played soccer with it over at ups and one corner of the drive had all the bubbles popped. Thankfully the drive checked out well and came up with no errors.

Other Thoughts: I reccomend when you get the drive to run seatools and check it for errors. I understand it was my fault since ived been warned about neweggs hard drive shipping but i didnt think it would be that bad. Either way, i lucked out and it worked out fine. -1 Star for shipping still.

Rating + 5 Fast, large, cheap, quiet, reliable

Pros: Speed: I bought four of these back in March of this year and put them in a RAID 5, and they are blazing fast. The throughput and seek times are amazing.

Size: 500 gigs for less than 60 dollars? 'Nuff said

Noise: These drives are incredibly quiet. As I mentioned, I have four of them all going at once and I can't hear them at all over my case fans, which aren't very loud either.

Reliability: I've only had them for about 7 months, but they haven't skipped a beat yet.

Cons: I can't think of any.

Rating + 1 half garbage is still garbage

Pros: Cheap (get what you pay for...or less than what you pay for)

Cons: Second set of Seagate hard drives where 1 out of 2 has failed within a few months. Purchased two 640 last year, one failed. Purchased two of these particular 500, and now one has failed. After warranty, this drive will now cost apprx $20 more than what I bought it for (check out return warranty support from Seagate). For the record, these came from newegg in bubble wrap, but each in separate boxes packed in a larger box with "peanuts", so I don't think it was the shipping, but who knows. Don't waste your money like I did.

Other Thoughts: OEM should only extend the warranty of the hard drive if it reaches the consumer in the same condition that the OEM expects to receive a broken drive. For instance, Seagate has specific packaging requirements for you to ship a failed HDD back to them or else your warranty is void. Newegg's packaging for shipping the HDD to the consumer fails those requirements last I checked, but please doublecheck. Think I'll give another vendor a chance to ship me HDD and see if they also continue to wind up with roughly a 50% failure rate.

Rating + 1 The problem with outsourcing

Pros: Speedy, no write errors while it worked. See cons.

Cons: After around 6 months, I'm experiencing a lock-up every time the drive is left idle or sometimes, even if it's in use. This means the hard drive is starting do die. This is the first time I've experienced this with a hard drive. This is pale in comparison to a hard drive that came with a PREBUILT computer from something like 6 years ago, still in working condition... Obviously, this is the product of Seagate outsourcing manufacture to some bleh company in China. Buyer beware...

Other Thoughts: Never buying Seagate again.

Pros: Great drives I ordered three of these and two are still running strong.

Cons: After 5 months one drive has started to die. I checked the disk with the Seagate tools and it give me 2 errors at the beginning of the drive but it can't fix the.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully seagate will replace the drive with no questions asked, I hate the hassle some companies put you through.

Rating + 3 Quality Control Issues

Pros: Drives run super quite. Decent Price, but not great.

Cons: Bought three drives, one Drive DOA. Seems alot of reviews are listing DOA drives. Cost me $8.70 plus my time\gas to ship the drive back.

Other Thoughts: Seagates Quality Control seems to have compelete vanished. They seem to be mass producing and don't care if 33% of the drives are defective. Not sure how this is cost effective, but it is really annoying to the end user. I may consider another brand the next time I need Drives.

Rating + 5 Taking the volume to 12!

Pros: 12th Generation, means less prone to failure and more buys ironed out, but most importantly, less heat, less power and less space taken up.

This drive is half the thickness of older Seagate 500GB drives, owed to the fact that Seagate has lost 2 platters. That translates into better data density and better performance.

Also at a very reasonable price for half a terabyte.

Cons: Relatively low capacity for the current age of media enhusiasts, but for the begining business or entry level gamer, this is fine

Other Thoughts: No buts about it, this is a sound little drive. It marries decent speeds with decent storage at a great price, you really can't ask for more.

This was the primary storage in an AMD business PC. I was looking for performance and capacity, and this fit that role fine.

Reccomended highly to anyone but media enhusiasts as this drive will fill up quickly for them.

Rating + 5 Great drive or greastest drive?

Pros: I always buy seagate because they are rock solid.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Every manufacturer will have drives that show up DOA or fail once in a while. I've found that seagate's rate is a lot lower. The goodness of a manufacturer is really the probability of failure, not the outliers. If you run a ton of machines yeah, no matter what brand of drive you will experience failures; I've found seagates fail less frequently.

Pros: The last several years Seagate has continued to make a rock solid hard drive. I bought this drive to create a mirror array on my system, and have used several other drives for Raid 0, Raid 5, or Raid 10, and rarely have I ever had a problem.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I had a drive that was 4 1/2 years old (160GB) drive fail a few weeks ago, and their RMA process and warranty just rock. It's was part of a mirrored array, and everything came back online with no problem.

Pros: This is the second one of these I have bought , both still working great . I had a 150gb Volciraptor and these drives nip at the heals of the Volci , HD tach reading 125mps read , of course the volci beats these in access time but believe me you wont notice it that much.

Cons: Considering the cost of SSD and the volciraptor and the proformance of these I be buying more shoot if spped is your game then raid 2 of these and laugh all the way to the bank while those other people buy real expensive drives!

Other Thoughts: have yet to see one dead drive from seagate and this is my 4th buy from seagate . I just love the 7200.12 series

Rating + 5 Fast data transfer speeds

Pros: Extremely quiet - 7200.12 (beware of .11)
Burst Speed - 134.5MB/s
Average Read: 102.5MB/s
Random Access 14.2ms (average in it's class)
A good drive to hold large amounts of data.
Making a SSD your boot drive, along with this drive for data is a winning combination. The first 40% of this drive has extremely fast sustained data transfer rates (130MB/s) The remaining in comparable to other modern drives in it's class. (above 70MB/s)
Also noticed they moved the electronic components to the other side of the board. This helps avoid the shipping damage I've seen on other drives.

Cons: I was hesitant about buying this after reading other reviews about reliability.
I've owned this just a couple days, so I'm keeping the drive it replaced on my shelf for a month or two. The drive made it here unscathed . I rarely power down my PC, and rarely have power outages, so that will help.

Other Thoughts: Poor packaging - Hey Newegg, DOH!
Ordered Wednesday, shipped from NJ and receved on Friday in NC (10 eggs!!) It was shipped in bubble-wrap. One side was jammed between bubbles and had no bubbles protecting it on that side but fortunately it was evenly centered inside the shipping peanuts.

*Hint, if ordering more than one, order them separately to minimize them damaging each other inside the shipping box.

Pros: Quiet and fast for the cost.

Cons: I had to RMA a previous one from a different vendor. Not a con per se but another data point. RMAs for drives happen so I had no problem ordering another.

Other Thoughts: Using it for a lower cost but fair capacity system drive (second one, bought an earlier one for a different machine). I like that it is quiet and its speed is very good for a system disk for a <10k rpm drive.

Rating + 4 I bought 20 several months ago

Pros: Fast, cool, quiet, low-profile

Seagate Customer Service is very helpful and they have an excellent system for tracking returns.

Cons: They ALL had to be returned at significant expense.

You MUST Burn-in and torture-test these drives when they are new to weed out the bad ones. You MUST allow for drive failures in your plans and your schedule.

Other Thoughts: I bought 20 of these drives for two RAID setups. ALL of them failed and had to be returned.

The good news is that the replacement drives have been running fine for months now.

I keep a couple of spares on the shelf because it takes weeks for warranty turn-around.

Thanks for NOT including cables, etc. I have plenty already and I would rather not pay for them. Get a retail package if you need accessories.

Pros: I GO THIS HD AS PART OF A COMBO PACKAGE. I'M NOT A BIG FAN OF SEA GATE HD'S. THIS ONE IS VERY LARGE AND USED FOR GAMING....SO FAR HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS. I USUALLY BUY WESTERN DIGITAL HD'S AS THEY ARE VERY GOOD WORK HORSES.

Cons: NONE

Pros: 1) inexpensive

Cons: 1) still scared by Seagate's previous issues, which don't apply, becasue these work really nicely, so NONE.

Other Thoughts: Use two of in a custom build (for myself =), clock an average of 250mbs using hdd tune in a RAID 0 (striped) array. faster (and quieter) than the wd blacks that I have been using for nicer builds, or the wd blues (or whatever) that I have been using on cheaper builds. Pros: Fast. According to HD tune I get and average of 102.2 MB/sec data transfer with a peak of 130.2 MB/sec and a min of 60.5 MB/sec, great numbers for a single drive, access time was 14.6 ms.

From what I have read this drive has the fastest transfer rate in its class and comes very close to some 10,000 RPM drives.

Pros: Good drive, fast but be careful of how you keep it cool..

Cons: Hard drive took a poop within the first month of owning it.. read other thoughts to brighten up your thoughts on it..

Other Thoughts: Well as I stated above the hard drive took a poop on me after a month but then again I don't keep my hardware cool... But the upside to it is Seagate's support & return warranties. These drives are good till 2012 and if they burn out you just contact Seagate and setup a return order and they exchange you a brand new drive for your bad one. Don't be alarmed of Newegg's return policy's just trust the brand "Seagate"

Rating + 5 Ultra Fast Shipping! Next Day Arrival

Pros: This to commend newegg on their ultra-fast shipping!

The HDD was ordered early Thursday morning and delivered before 5PM Friday afternoon!

This was with newegg’s standard UPS 3-business day shipping which was free on this HDD.

Shipping was very professionally done in a nice sturdy box, filled with “pop-corn”, the HDD was completely bubble wrapped & centered on the middle of the box, protected by the “pop-corn” on all sides.

The HDD itself is in its factory anti-static bag, with the seal intact.

Most Excellent Shipping Services = 5 Stars for newegg.

I will post a review of the HDD after it is installed and working.

Cons: Certainly None with newegg’s shipping!

Rating + 5 Fast!

Pros: Fast drive for a very reasonable price. Single 500 Gb platter. None of the retail stores carry the 7200.12 drives. The current 500 gig Seagate drive at sold at a store that reminds me of “potatoes cooked in hot oil” is PN: ST3500641AS / 7200.9. It seems like the retailers never update to the latest model once they have that size in stock. I tried three other big name stores, same thing for WD drives, unless it is a new capacity the retail stores always have older slower drives.

When I asked the sales person I was told thatwhat was in the box was the latest fastes drive and that Seagate just had a lot of extra boxes with the old PN printed on it. I pointed out that the PN was a sticker that was printed when the drive was packaged and that his story made no sense unless thye print stickers two years in advance. The sales guy got very quite.

Cons: None... Very happy

Other Thoughts: When I was installing XP it initially tried it with 4 gigs of memory and got a blue screen before I was able to install the AHCI driver. This appears to have corrupted the drives master boot record (MBR), effectively bricking the drive. I put the drive on two different systems and both would hang when verifying the DMI pool. This only happed when the drive was set as the primary drive. Even after removing the drive and re connecting the original drive both of the systems would still hang. Setting the CD-rom as the boot drive and booting from the Seagate CD allowed me to get past the DMI/ MBR problem. By booting from the CD drive the bios skips looking at the hard drives MBR. Seagate’s disk utility to format the drive fixed the MBR and after that the drive worked fine. A regular formatting with NTFS in XP will not solve the boot problem and the drive would only work as a secondary drive.

This is was not the drives fault but it sure seemed that way.

According to HD tune I

Pros: Works Great, Its much faster, quieter and runs cooler then the old drive its replacing, I just hope it lasts as long. There is cloning software available from Seagate for free and it works great, I was able to clone my old hard drive and It hasn't missed a beat yet, I'm keeping my fingers crossed though.

Cons: None yet, only time will tell.

Other Thoughts: This hard drive is fast, it got a 5.9 in Vista 64, my old drive got a 5.4 and was notably slower. This drive is also half the thickness and weight of my old drive. It was delivered fast and well packed, as always. Good job Newegg.

Rating + 5 The new gold standard?

Pros: I just purchased 2 of these and put in RAID-0 stripe for performance. I do a lot of video editing on a semi-professional basis, and I'm going to use these as my boot drive. These drives in RAID-0 achieve an incredible 280MB/s. The burst is about the same. The burst might be more if the cache was 32mb, but still this is extremely fast performance.

These drives are SLIM! Supposedly don't consume much power also. Being slim, they'll allow slightly better airflow than fullsize drives, especially if you have 2 of them sandwiched like I do.

For casual home users I'd HIGHLY recommend 2 of these in RAID-1 (mirror). For GAMERS, definitely get 2 in RAID-0.

Actually it's hard to choose this drive over the Seagate LP series. They are slightly slower but still extremely fast for 5900rpm (around 120MB/s in hdtach) and actually have 32mb cache. I have 2 of those in an external enclosure (RAID-1) for my important data. They are supposed to be even more energy efficient (longer life?)

Cons: ABSOLUTELY NONE!!!

Other Thoughts: Be aware of the "be aware" dummy below. I timed myself from opening the packages to actually having a partitioned functioning RAID-0 array in windows to be about 12 minutes. Nobody in their right mind does full/slow formats these days, it's just not necessary and it really will take several hours hahaha.... I ALWAYS do quick format unless I want to really erase the drive, in which case I'll use third party software anyway (dban boot&nuke).

And yes, this is an OEM drive with NO cables, and yes the actual formatted capacity is about 466GB. No surprises there except for those who are non-technical.

Rating + 5 Seagate Harddrives

Pros: After years of building computer systems with the WD family
my mentality was that WD were the best. However step aside WD! Seagate is in town. These are the best family of drive I've ever work with. With the software that Seagate provides to install and set up your hard drive I have to say it's second to none. Their website is also user friendly for downloading software installation for older harddrives. Over the years no data losses have occured.

Pros: I bought this drive because I only buy seagate drives.
I have owned all the major brands and this is a company that stands not only behind its drives but also behind its customers.
I have had some of the 7200.11's fail but seagate not only offered excellent customer support but also offered data recovery at no cost to Me.
I have never got this level of support from any other drive Manufacturer.
Seagate drives are whisper Quiet and perform as good or better than any drive out there..
Will be purchasing some NS series for new My servers.

Rating + 4 Worrisome

Pros: Model ST3500418AS, Firmware CC35: Has one single platter with two heads so it runs cool and has impressive read/write speeds (as fast as my VelociRaptors), although it has very slow, mediocre seek times according to HDTune. They are also specially thin at about ¾” rather than the usual 1”. I bought these because of their small profile since airflow will be much better around them, but more importantly for me is that they can be mounted in some restricted spaces I have, such as above or below a floppy drive.

Cons: But I am critically concerned with the very high “Raw Read Error Rates” and “Seek Error Rates” (reported in the S.M.A.R.T. data), especially the seek error rate since that could significantly reduce performance. So, okay, they’re using some seriously impressive high technical art with these new 500GB per platter drives, but if these error rates are being reported correctly, then we’re all in trouble.

Pros: Small 1/3 height form factor, Quite, Fast and at least one is still running.

Seagate Warranty is great, but can be a little costly now that these drives are around $50 ($20 for fast ship, free for snail mail)

Cons: After researching which manufacturer is currently having product issues (they all do on different models), I purchased 2 of these drives to replace a set of 300GB Seagate’s where one failed after running over 3 yrs 24/7 in Raid 1 (Mirrored). These had been running for just about a month and one failed, then an older 500Gb in another Raid 1 failed two days later....

Other Thoughts: I've had 5 Seagate SATA I/II drives (Raid 1 - 3-300Gb, 2-500Gb) fail within the last 45 days. Don't know if it is a coincidence that most were just over 3 years running.

Found that all the manufacturers are currently having high failure issues, so went with Seagate because of their warranty policy/process.

Hey its electronics, usually once they burn in for a week or so they are good for a few years...

Other Thoughts: I would recommend WD or Samsung HDD over Seagate's. I think the seagate have some quality control issues after 7200.11 version

Pros: Can't complain one bit about these drives. They're so thin, and quiet. I put 3 of these in a RAID 5 set up and absolutely love it. Very quick and responsive drives

Cons: First one I received was faulty but newegg is so great with their RMA service that I can't deduct an egg for it.

Rating + 1 seagate is junk

Pros: good price

Cons: after about 8 months this drive decided it did not want to be in the chassis anymore. it spins up but the mother board and seatools will not detect it! this is the second drive i have bought that was branded seagate! both have bitten the dust. two out of two. means no more seagate! wd only!!!!!!!!1

Other Thoughts: dont waste your money on this drive! you will lose your data if you dont back up every day!

Pros: I gave this hard drive an 8 out of 10 approval before it was totally installed in my computer in a newegg survey. The reasons being. The drive arrived within three days, well packaged and ready for installation.
I tried installing it myself, but Windows XP wasn't very helpful in getting it initialized, even when I used various Windows XP recovery DVDs.
What to do? Fortunately I have an EXCELLENT computer repair store a short drive away, and I had them check the drive and load XP on it for me.
These guys are inexpensive, and extremely reliable. Please see my cons for more thoughts.

Cons: This is the second hard drive that I have ordered from newegg. While the drives have functioned as expected. I am not happy about that fact that they didn't come with any kind of software, or connector cables.
Come on newegg, would it really kill you guys to through a customer a "bone" and include a two dollar cable? The cable issue isn't a BIGGY, but I have concerns for folks that aren't all that tech savvy trying to initialize these drives. Do your home work before you order one of these drives.

Other Thoughts: I kind of "busted" on newegg for not supplying a free connector cable for the hard drives. Having said that though. I think that they are WONDERFUL about their no shipping and handling offers. I guess that kind of makes up for not including a connector cable. ;-)
