Rating + 5 made my job easier

Pros: backing up data from multiple hard drives (especially IDE) has been insanely easy with this. I no longer have to restart my computer ever time I hook up a customer's hard drive.

Cons: I just wish you could power 3.5 drives and Sata 2.5 drives through USB also. The 2.5 IDE is powered by the unit and works just fine, but no others. Not the products fault, USB does have it's limitations. It would just be nice.

Other Thoughts: At this price I don't see any reason to complain about it dying after hundreds of uses. It has been running strong for 8 months now, at my job that equates to over 400 hard drives of varying brands/sizes/speeds/quality. Some have worked some have not, generally the ones that didn't had preexisting issues.

Rating + 2 Did not last

Pros: Lots of adapters, worked well at first

Cons: Failed after 6 months

Other Thoughts: This device was so handy that it really caused problems when it stopped working. It just stopped with a drive mounted and never worked again. I hope I can find something more reliable to replace it with.

Rating + 1 KINGWIN USI-2535

Pros: None

Cons: This product does not work. Connecting the device to a powered USB 2.0 port will make the blue diode lit but none of the devices would work! I'm returning it as I have acquired another adapted which DOES work.

Rating + 1 Works intermittently

Pros: Has connectors for SATA and IDE drives.

Cons: The device worked intermittently straight out of the box. The new hard drive I connected to it was accessible for periods of only a few seconds to a few minutes, before becoming inaccessible and generating errors. The connection did not last long enough to get any tasks done. The computer and USB ports I used with this device are in good working order. I reconnected all this device's cables but it just fails.

Rating + 3 Nifty, but not recommended

Pros: Nifty, compact design. Every possible adapter or cable required for a drive is included.

Cons: Extremely poor quality control. I bought this item locally, and fortunately I opened the box in the parking lot. The connectors were at an angle, which would prevent connecting any IDE drives to the device. I went back in the store and exchanged it for another which was better. When I got home to test it, I found the USB cable was defective. I was able to use it with another USB cable I had lying around.

Other Thoughts: I do not recommend buying this device. I thought it would be good because I have other Kingwin products which are very nice, but I was wrong. I got it cheap enough that I'll keep it, but for frequent use, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

Rating + 4 Not elegant but seems to work

Pros: It does work even though it's a little finicky. But great to be able to connect an SATA or IDE HD to your laptop and use as an external drive.

Cons: Directions/documentation are written in broken English and not comprehensive at all. You basically have to figure out yourself how the pieces fit together...about 3 or 4 cables necessary. But it's not that difficult if you just approach it logically.

Other Thoughts: This little piece of hardware seems well worth the $ so far. Great to use in emergencies and to have access to your data this way. Good to use for travel if you take your laptop and want to bring an IDE or SATA HD along for backup and to have access to additional data.

Rating + 5 Works well!

Pros: Average transfer speed. Easy to setup.

Cons: Doesn't have instructions for a computer beginner (they might not be using this product though).

Other Thoughts: I've used this product to transfer large files from my smaller laptop HDD to my old desktop HDD that has been taken out of my desktop.

I transferred a game file that was around 14GB in 5-10 minutes.

Rating + 1 Does not detect drives

Pros: None

Cons: Was was not able to have the device detect 3 hard drives that I tried across 3 different computers. I need the device to work outside of windows for drive imaging. Someone stated that it worked for them after they installed the device drivers, if so, this thing is not defective, but an utterly worthless piece of junk.

Other Thoughts: I didn't buy from newegg.com, I bought from a local retailer, I've exchanged the device twice thinking it was defective. Both time I could not get it to qork.

Pros: These are great for doing HDD troubleshooting and tech support. I'm a sys admin for a small software development firm as well as a sophmore at RIT. I cant tell you how many times these things have been handy. They work perfectly with Ghost for Unix, a netBSD (i think) based drive cloning and imaging distro... I now own 3

Rating + 1 It sucks

Pros: It's cheap....in more than one way. At least the accessories like the 4 pin molex to SATA power adapter and 4 inch SATA data cable are nice quality merchandise.

Cons: Well, admittedly I bought it from a local retailer and not newewgg.com. The device was defective right out of the box. When connected the USB connected/disconnected sounds would chime every few seconds. It wouldn't remain connected and therefore is worthless to me.

Other Thoughts: Well of course I returned it for a replacement (from another manufacturer). The Vantec CB-ISATAU2 cost me the same money and works like a charm. Running for almost an hour now with NO issues at all!

Rating + 4 It does the job it was meant to

Pros: It works. After you install the drivers, you can copy your files on or off the hard drive attached, just like you could do with an external kit. The best thing is it is compact, can connect IDE or SATA drives with ease, and it's an in expensive solution.

Cons: Biggest problem is probably that no instructions were included, in the box or on disc. You need to set the jumpers on the Hard Drive to Master for it to work. Otherwise the device acts really funky and never works the way it should, even freezing your computer until you detach it. Kind of annoying to have to learn how to use this own your own, especially by trial and error if you don't have at least a little technical knowledge about hard drives.

Other Thoughts: The Disc doesn't have an autorun.ini file. To avoid issues, just follow these instructions in order.

1) Run Setup.exe on the disc
2) Attach the Mini-USB side to the device, the the device to the drive.
3) Attach the power to the device and then plug the AC to the outlet.
4) Plug the USB into your computer.

Your drive should start running, and the drivers should be installing and detecting the drive on your computer.

Rating + 2 Faulty PWS

Pros: the data unit itself works

Cons: the power supply is unstable. I have had 3 fail. 2 out of the box and 1 after 2 months. when they fail it causes data problems and most 3.5 drives to not work.
the fix for this is to hook it up to your PC for power or get a 3rd party 12v/5v PWS to replace the one that came with it.
I suspect that THIS is the problem that most are seeing out there cause when I do use PC for power it works OK.

Rating + 4 Good but not SMART

Pros: Connects up to (e)SATA, 3.5" IDE, and 2.5" IDE. Uses a standard mini-B usb cable. 2.5" IDE drive is self-powering. Blue Power and Read/Write lights.

Cons: Doesn't allow you to access SMART data on the HDD.

Other Thoughts: A note on the SMART data: Most usb to IDE/SATA adapters don't have the capability to access the SMART data inside most hard drives. I routinely test hard drives using Spinrite 6, a drive maintenance utility, and every adapter I've come across (4+ so far) aren't able to access SMART data. I'd definitely buy this adapter again, but I won't be using it to check hard drives using Spinrite. But if you just need to access files on an external drive, this'll do it just fine.

Pros: Very convenient to use. Comes with all of the needed cables. So far I have successfully used it on an IBM 30GB 3.5" IDE, a Seagate 30GB 3.5" IDE a WD 80GB 3.5 IDE and a 250GB 3.5" SATA drive.

Cons: I was unable to access an old Seagate 10GB 3.5" IDE drive out of my mother's old PIII cmputer.

Rating + 5 Works perfectly with no data corruption

Pros: Small form, affordable compared to other adapters, reliable

Cons: Power cable has no On/Off switch, not a deal breaker but would have been nice since you don;t have to plug/unplug the cable

Detachable USB cable, this is not really a con but rather preference since I prefer permanently attached USB cable to the device

Other Thoughts: Tried copying 8.5 Gig file and then did a FC (from dos window) between the two files and they were identical, drive brands tested were IDE Western Digital Caviar RE and several different series of IDE Maxtor

I have Powmax IDE-UDB adapter and this thing would give unpredictable data corruption when used with Western Digital drives but not with Maxtor drives, very strange

Rating + 5 Good product

Pros: Works well with IDE 3.5, SATA 3.5, and 2.5 notebook hard drives. I use it a permanent connection to one of my SATA DVD RWs. I have an older IDE enclosure that I put the DVD drive in. I punched a hole in the back and use the Kingwin adapter to use as a SATA to USB connection.

I was also able to format my WD Green 1 TB hard drive and have no problems reading and writing to it. I liked it so much that I bought another one. I use the second adapter to swap out drives.

Cons: No on/off switch. I bought a on/off switch that connects between the power plug and my surge protecter.

Rating + 3 works fine

Pros: A swiss-army knife of drives. I've hooked up IDE and sata drives without a problem. I use it make quick backups and make use of all the random extra drives I have. It's WAY better than having an enclosure for each drive.

Cons: Not bus-powered. Didn't really expect it, but it would be highly convenient. Sometimes I need to futz with the USB cable to get it to mount on my Mac.

Other Thoughts: Don't care about the OTB (one touch backup) so I've never used it. I've only used it on my OS X machine.

Rating + 1 Consistent data corruption

Pros: The idea behind the product is great: a compact adapter that allows you to connect to most common HDD interfaces.

Cons: I was trying to copy partitions (1 to 10 GB, using 'dd' under Linux) from a 2.5" HDD connected to the adapter to a laptop (transferring the OS to a larged HDD). The copied system crashed. I checked with md5sum: the checksum is different for every copying attempt! RMA'd the adapter, the replacement does the same thing. Lost money and many hours of work. Find something better!

Other Thoughts: Did not check whether the data transfer to/from 3.5" drives would be corrupted as well. The danger of data corruption (almost certain for 2.5" HDDs) definitely outweighs any possible benefits of the adaptor for me. I've bought an external USB enclsure instead: works like a charm, although not as easy to connect. Another thought: Maybe I could find some use of the various cables supplied with the thing?

Rating + 1 Waste of $ and time!

Pros: Power supply works. The unit worked with a new 1TB SATA drive to connect it via USB, although I did that just as a test.

Cons: Would not work with 3.5" IDE dirves. I tried two of them that work fine direct connected.
Windows wants to initialize the drives. I want to work with the data already on them. Useless for this purpose.
I tried my XP desktop and Vista Laptop, same in both.
No joy, going back to the shelf for the next sucker to buy.

Other Thoughts: Very little documentation as to what exactly the One Touch Backup button will do.

Guess I'll abandon the world of IDE entirely and cruise happily with SATA. No need for flaky devices such as this one, then.

Pros: Great idea, includes all cables needed.

Cons: Do yourself a favor and skip on this. I have used this device on and off for a few months, it usually drops connections on large file transfers and fails you when you need it. I have had it with this adapter as it has just killed my 160 gig wd. The only only good thing i got out of this was using it to install ubuntu/xp on an eeepc :/.

Tech Level: high
Ownership: 1 month to 1 year

Rating + 2 Does not provide full ATA spec

Pros: You can connect drives easily with this. The power supply that comes with is also very useful for testing other components, like fans. Right now I have it powering a fan that's blowing on a hard drive I'm trying to recover to keep it cool.

Cons: The device doesn't provide the full ATA spec, which makes it somewhat troublesome to use for its obvious purpose - testing, recovering, or getting data from pulled hard drives.

Specifically, the device does not allow the system to see bad sectors. It handles the bad sector itself and reports zeroes for that block of data. i.e. if you have a questionable hard drive you're testing, you will misdiagnose it. Also if you are trying to grab data and there are bad sectors, the device will essentially "fool" the OS by reporting a successful read of data that is all zero, when it was really an unsuccessful read of a bad block.

Other Thoughts: USELESS FOR HARD DRIVE RECOVERY. See Cons.

I verified the behavior using ddrescue (linux). While copying a region of good data it goes fast. Plugged in through 1394 the drive reports bad sectors in a region of disk. Plugged in via this device, the same region will pause and copy slowly in that region, but will not report bad sectors. Watching the data as it enters the image reveals that when it pauses, zeroes are being dumped into the file.

This device should only be used on known-perfectly-good hard drives. (And if the drive is known perfectly good, why is it outside of its case or enclosure and sitting bare on your desk? Which is why I rated it "poor".)

Rating + 3 Very handy, usually works, could be better.

Pros: It comes with everything you need to attach any kind of drive. As a bonus the power adapter can be used to test other things that take a PC power molex, like fans. It's fun to open up dead drives and use the power adapter to spin them up and watch the read heads seek.

Cons: Sometimes inexplicably fails partway through long operations. Disclaimer: I do work with lots of questionable drives. I have a stack I'm testing right now. However, I just tried twice to format a drive with this gadget and it failed both times, and then formatted just fine when plugged in directly. (Then I plugged it back in to this USB gadget and formatted it again, and it worked. So, I question the gadget's reliability.)

Other Thoughts: It's easy to use this gadget improperly. For example: sitting flat on a table, is not a very efficient cooling situation for a drive. Maybe my formats failed due to heat? Who knows? Also sitting on a table with the electronics exposed is a great way for a screw to fall on top of your drive's board and short something.

This thing is for testing and recovery purposes by experienced people, and it's hard to know from a review if someone is using it wrong.

Pros: I bought this item about one month ago, it is so great product, I can use for 2.5",3.5" IDE or SATA HDD, but I saw some one wrote review and so negative, I can't understand also not really agree, I believe if you know how to use, it will help you a lot, even me just know a few computer knowledge,I can use this item testing a lot of thing, especially can use for 2.5" or 3.5" no matter SATA or IDE, nothing can compare with this item ,it is so convenience to use it, Thanks for Kingwin....

Cons: Just wish Kingwin can create more good products in the future, it can be help people a lot thing, even not really know a lot the computer knowledge as me....

Pros: Conceptually, a useful product

Cons: Doesn't work very often; unwieldy design; no power switch

Rating + 2 Not a great experience

Pros: Easy to use, good connectors.

Cons: Wouldn't work at all with some USB controllers, including a common nForce4 chipset. It worked great with several machines running XP and Vista...a few times. Total failure after several uses. Will no longer work with drives it worked with before, and won't work with the other ~8 computers and ~10 drives I've tried it with. Poor reliability.

Other Thoughts: I guess I'll try getting a warranty replacement from Kinwin for what it's worth, but I don't have a lot of confidence in this product.

Pros: Adaptable to most any hard drive, laptop or otherwise, you can own. Connections are well made.

Cons: Extremely poor module internal component manufacturing quality. If you plan on doing a lot of file transferring and/or drive swapping/backing up, do not buy this drive. Out of the box, I had used it for only 2 days, transferring a total of about only 5GB (pictures and various avi files) before the module's chip controller just up and stopped working. Power was still there, but the module was dead. 3.5IDE, SATA, nor 2.5IDE would work, and tried this Kingwin product on 4 different (VISTA + XP) computers. Nothing. Dead to the world. It's unfortunate, as Kingwin has a lost a customer for good this time. I've tried two of their other products through Newegg, and both, while seemingly to show build quality, had very poor internal operating consistency & quality.

Other Thoughts: Stick with Rosewill and/or Koutech. Kingwin's manufacturing quality has proven to be worse than poor, acorss varied products.

Pros: OSX immediately recognized both hard drives and cd drives using this adapters. Have not yet tried it with Windows. Tested with Seagate Barracuda 7200 hard drive, an old IBM hard drive, and with a Pioneer DVD burner.

Cons: Randomly disconnected with my old IBM hard drive, but that may be a problem with the drive, not the adapter.

Other Thoughts: It's not listed in the specs, but this adapter does work with Mac. It's not even listed in the specs on the manufacturer's website, but the box has a Mac logo on the back, which can be seen on the manufacturer's website.

Cons: No power switch so drive is on as long as its plugged in.
2.5" IDE drives are powered over USB data cable. Only had 1 problem with plugging into a front panel USB port. Using the back panel USB ports worked fine.

Pros: what can i say? it does what it is supposed to do. the adapter definately saves time and money as i won't need to buy an enclosure ment for more permanent housing and operation.

Cons: setting up the power connections can be a little tedious, but its nothing a little common sense and instruction manual reading can't fix.

Other Thoughts: though there are already other rebranded adapters such as this one, i chose kingwin because i have had good experience with the company's products. the adapter comes in very handy when i am trying to salvage data off the hard drives that my family gives me before i reformat them and do a fresh install before i give it back to them. i haven't tried the one-touch backup feature yet, but the unit itself works just fine. i have used a 1.8'' ide, 2.5'' ide, 3.5'' ide and sata, and a spare dvd burner on this adapter and all of them are recognised and function properly.
