Rating + 5 Good Utility Board

Pros: Great Board for the money. I used this board + various "junk" parts to make a decent Diagnostics work station. Accepts Win 7 just fine, 32 bit though.

Cons: Only accepts 32 bit versions of windows, does not support transparacy effects in windows 7, not a big deal for me, I just needed a board to diagnose problems and back up and transfer data.

Other Thoughts: I am the master of Ghetto Computing!

Rating + 3 Be careful about this one

Pros: It functions most of the time.

Cons: PCIe 1.0 spec, useless startup error beep codes (there's only two codes), no bios updates on US website (Do a search for Taiwan site to get bios update), not really a good investment.

Other Thoughts: I bought this board so that I caould use the Pentium 4 I had laying around. I wanted to put a video card in it but the one I got (for a good deal) wont work because it's a PCIe 2.0 card.

Rating + 5 Works Great

Pros: Great MOBO for an older model computer upgrade. Does everything it needs to do and more. Will also boot from USB drives. Very Nice board!!

Cons: Only two slots for RAM, but for an older comp why do I need so many RAM modules.

Other Thoughts: Runs great and not too hot, definitely a good buy for upgrading an older processor up to newer memory and faster speeds.

Rating + 5 Biostar Socket 478 MOBO

Pros: Have upgraded 7 or more systems using old P4 - 3.0 ghz - 800 FSB - Socket 478 CPU's. This motherboard upgrades any Socket 478 system with DDR2 - 667 memory and SATA II Hard drives. A great motherboard to upgrade old systems for minimum dollars. Performance is also exceptional.

Cons: Only 2 memory slots.

Other Thoughts: This is the only Socket 478 Motherboard I can find that upgrades Socket 478 CPU's to this level with DDR2-667 memory and SATA II. This gives several of my friends and customers a low cost significant upgrade for their old slow socket 478 cpu systems.

Rating + 1 NOT WORTH 2 CENTS.

Pros: None what so ever.

Newegg/biostar please do us all a favor and stop selling this board. It's not fair to be ripping ppl off.

Cons: IT'S A SOCKET 478 BOARD, Sure it has ddr 2 and PCI-e slots but don't think for one second that you'll get anything more out of this board than browsing the web. You can buy all the Fancy high tech Video cards you want and max out the memory and CPU but you'll just be wasting your money.

Other than wanting to Royally rip ppl off i don't know what biostar were thinking when they made this board a s478 of all things and put Pci-e and DDR2 tech in it.. SERIOUSLY!!!!!

Other Thoughts: !!!!!!!READ THE ABOVE CONS BEFORE YOU BUY!!!!!!!

Rating + 4 Good MB for old processor

Pros: I got 2 of these the first week of Jan. 2010, and they both work. Even with old socket 478 processors, when you pair them with 2GB of DDR2 RAM they make a reasonably fast computer. Connections are adequately marked. Runs Windows XP Pro. with no problems. I ran the burn-in test with SiSoftware Sandra Lite XII.SP2c for 48 hours set to "normal" priority and had no failures or overheating.

Cons: only 2 SATA ports. the cpu fan and case fan speeds are not controlled by the motherboard so they stay at maximum all the time(loud). the temperature readings are incompatible with SpeedFan 4.37, and PC Alert 4, but, with SiSoftware Sandra Lite XII.SP2c and the included WarpSpeeder apps, the temps. match up within a degree or two.

Other Thoughts: Get a PCI-e 16x graphics card, the integrated graphics where barely enough to handle the Aero effects when I tested Windows 7 RC1 with all of the latest updates.

Rating + 1 Complete JUNK!!

Pros: None really, It runs 20c cooler than the old PC, You really might wanna think it through before you decide to waste your money. Save up and build a duo core system. Trust me you will regret buying this board.

Cons: There's about a 60 - 80 second delay after Bios start up screen before the windows xp logo screen comes up and it's really annoying, Ive posted on several tech forums and no one seems to have a clue to why I'm having this issue, I contacted biostar tech support a few times in the past two weeks and they flat out refuse to respond. The board doesn't hold 4GB, more like 2 1/2. Biostars driver agent states that i have 2 - 3 bad drivers, NOTE: There are no (!) Errors in device manager, Ive installed, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers from the disk which came with the board also tried the drivers from the site, My guess is driver agent is faulty and or it's just a ploy for biostar to get you to pay 30 dollars for driver agent to fix a problem you don't really have.

Pros: Works if you want to put in alot of effort.

Cons: I have been a computer tech for over 35 Years. This has to be the the hardest Board I have ever setup.I purchased 2 of these motherboards with the same results.
I was able to get it to work with Windows 7 32bit. It took several clean installs, & two weeks to get it to work. I like biostar motherboards, but not this one. Buy at your own risk, & expect many hours of work.
Very Poor onboard video- Windows 7 rating only 2.0

Other Thoughts: Don't Buy this motherboard unless you have alot of technial experience.

Pros: Serial port... RAID 1 SATA
NEWEGG takes care of you if you have issues....1st board was bad I requested refund and ordered 2nd board to expedite replacement. Newegg reversed their $8.xx restocking charge on the refund.
Free shipping..

Cons: UBUNTU does not like S3 Chrome video.
Audio drivers don't work till you've loaded Service PACK 3 if loading XP.
1st Board had to be returned...
My first board was failed from the get go...2nd memory slot was failed data expected 00000000 found 0000ff00 1/2 way through addressing. Had I used 1 stick of memory I'd never would of known it.
Of course the replacement board ran memory test 4 passes as soon as I could.

Other Thoughts: Between us girls....This is the last Biostar product I buy. I'm got better things to do than be their final test department. I just completed a build of 10 machines-- used ASROCK MoBo's and Zero problems. and get this... the ASROCK MoBo's were refurbs!!

Pros: Thought it would save me some money....NEWEGG is a quick shipper and was offering FREE SHIPPING.
Needed a serial port...this one had one.
NEWEGG refunded restock charge on defective board because they saw I bought same to expedite waiting for a replacement.

Cons: Acted strange from the get go...couldn't put my finger on it...Sometimes locking up in BIOS display.
Finally, Install disk of UBUNTU 9.10 had a dos memory test, and... with 2Gb (2 sticks) memory, memory was failing at 1.67Gb...expected 00000000 found 0000FF00...
Each stick passed memory in slot 1 both sticks failed in slot 2 memort.. BAD BOARD... Sent bad back. Wish NEWEGG had a way to hold a credit card against the RMA and ship replacement right a way.. Western Digital does that on in warranty disks.

Other Thoughts: The replacement has now been working for 2 weeks.
UBUNTU doesn't like that S3 Chrome internal video chip set..when you install UBUNTU 9.10 you're stuck with 800x600 display max... info on S3 Chrome drivers is cryptic at best and requires 2 hours of reading forum messages..

Rating + 4 New life for 478 CPU's

Pros: Price / 2- SATA connecters / no issues with drivers / stability / installation

Cons: Invalid CPU temp: Updated to latest BIOS and CPU temp still reads 13C (that can't be right!) so the CPU temp warning is useless.

Other Thoughts: BIOS has LPT1 settings with no LPT1 connecter - if you have an old printer that requires an LPT1, this is not the board for you.

Pros: See other thoughts. Biostar's Taiwan site only lists "6" P4s that are compatible with this board. Now this list is for board versions 6/6.1 (I got 6.2's) but I'm posting the list hoping it helps.

Pros: None. Have had 2 of these in the past few weeks (bought from another vendor), both were DOA.

Cons: wouldn't beep, POST, nothing. Swapped PSUs, memory, CPUs, used onboard and vid cards.

Other Thoughts: Getting one of these that works is hit or miss. They can also be picky as to type of P4 and memory they'll work with. From what I read on the web this mobo has a high failure rate.

Pros: Put in 3.2ghz northwood with 2x1gb ddr2 667 offpaired ram. Running XP SP3 with Coreavc 2.0 on a 19" 16:10 lcd monitor. 720p h264 files play flawlessly. Works fine with SiI 3124 Sata card. Can use BeyondTV4 to record tv 1080i. 1080i playback is perfect.

Cons: Perhaps of the northwood but the computer will freeze randomly, I mean randomly. Could be up a week or two hours then the freeze. Seems to be something hardware basic that it does not agree with. XP has no idea freeze happens.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this for someone on the cheap. If had a prescott would have used that. Don't expect to play new games. Even upgrading the video card, you are still using 478 tech. I will upgrade just for cuda and linux. nvidia card of course.

Cons: I've gone through many motherboards over the years. This one was by far the worst. IE and Firefox crashed, other apps. froze. Rating + 5 Excellent board for the price!!!

Pros: I purchased this MoBo hoping to upgrade a computer that initially worked just fine, but I was unable to do an upgrade to Windows 7 – 32 bit. I installed the Intel Pentium 4 - 2.88 GHz processor into this motherboard, added just 1 GB of DDR2 ram, and then I attempted to install Windows 7 – 32 bit as an Operating System on the computer. I was successful in the installation of Windows 7 – 32 bit with absolutely no issues up to this point. The drivers included on the disc which is included with the board are totally useless in this particular installation setup, but I was able to acquire all of the necessary drivers through Windows Updates Services, and I must say that I am very pleased and completely impressed with the functionality of this board.

Cons: None, how can you complain about something that only cost $55.00!!!

Other Thoughts: Not to brag, but current Certifications include the following, so you can feel safe and believe in me when I give my acknowledgment on this particular product.

Pros: Found chip. Booted. after several tries

Cons: No online support from BiostarUSA. Poor Documentation. Had to search for updated drivers and bios. Runs very slow and hangs alot. Tried 3 different chips and 3 different sets of ram.

Other Thoughts: Used to use Biostar boards way back when. Now I know why they are refereed to as BioCrap boards. Don't waste your money go with a better brand board. I would RMA this junk, but there is another amount of money spent on this. Newegg fast delivery! Poor board

Rating + 1 Paperweight.

Pros: - It starts. Usually. What an epic achievement.

Cons: - Having ANYTHING attached to the primary IDE channel causes POST to stall for at least 3 minutes before continuing. I have to attach both my optical drive and boot hard drive on the secondary IDE and can't use the primary at all. Ridiculous.

- Refuses to recognize ANY of my known working PCI and PCI Express video cards: 3DFX Voodoo 3 PCI, Radeon 7000 PCI, Radeon x800Pro PCI-E, GeForce 7900GTX PCI-E. Even tried my brand new GTX285 just for a chuckle. And yes, BIOS was configured correctly to use an alternative video device instead of onboard.

- Refuses to recognize my Adaptec IDE RAID controller card. Thought that would make up for the primary IDE channel on this board being unusable, but alas, my hard drive woes continue.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for a tiny secondary PC that only has to play video on my TV and handle some of my old IDE hard drives for storage, so I decided to revive my old P4 2.8 for the task. Needless to say this motherboard failed miserably at every simple task I bought it for: Video - onboard video can't handle anything over 480p before it studders so badly it's unwatchable. This wouldn't be a problem if it would recognize my other video cards but it refuses. It can't even be used to handle my old IDE drives for storage since the primary IDE is useless and it won't recognize my RAID controller.

Again, it literally failed at every little thing I wanted it to do. Completely useless.

Pros: Great Board and easy install. bought one of these as a open box product. of course i didnt get all the extra stuff i shoulda got, but i used to build a computer for a customer and they use the computer to this day.

Supports overclocking of ram and cpu
Bios is great
pci express slots ddr2
great for upgrading old p4 systems got another on the way that im getting tommorow and orderin another next week for another customer build

Cons: since i had a open box product i didnt get the driver cd which sucked so i had to search the net for awhile to find that right drivers biostar support wasnt top notch. This MOBO seemed to be the red headed step child of the site i guess...

Other Thoughts: deffinate buy if you want to upgrade an old system.
not pricey but $40 would seem more reasonable to me

Pros: Great board to keep and old computer going.

Cons: Wasn't free. Could be a little cheaper by now.

Other Thoughts: I used this to replace a burnt out mobo in my old P4 machine that the wife was using to type up stuff for school and other light internet stuffs. It still works like a champ and now serves double duty as my retro gaming rig for the annual StarCraft new year's eve LAN party. I installed it along with 2g of 533 ram 9 months ago and there has been no problems with it at all.

Other Thoughts: One of the better boards you can get with a socket 478 processor compatibility.

Pros: Absolutely NONE.

Cons: Biostar is the biggest piece of junk out there. the only reason I got it was to upgrade a friends computer, goes to boot and locks on the boot screen, wont let you get into bios half the time. I have always had problems with biostar products, that is why I try to stay away from them. Stick with Gigabyte, even if you have to upgrade other components.

Other Thoughts: Will NEVER buy biostar again.

Rating + 4 Nice small upgrade board

Pros: bought this board to rebuild my friends pc that i killed on him, and it has very nice features built into it. before my friends comp was running 3.0e presscott but it was bottle-necking with ddr memory and an nvidia 6800 agp card. the system preformed okay but it was quite sad when it came to running any type of game. i had a spare 8800GT vid card and some ddr2 memory that i wasn't using so for the low price of this board i knew it would be a good upgrade for him. the computer is surprisingly fast and runs almost every game we play and now we can log into each other on steam and fight in our favorite games.

Cons: the only con i have about this board is the sata ports did not want to support drives over 128Gb and my friend had a 250Gb drive that he uses for backup. i thought by this time the board would not have a problem like this so thats why i rated it down one egg. hopefully a bios update will fix this issue in the future.

Other Thoughts: all in all if you have an older system and want it to scream, this is a good board that u can use to build up your system and upgrade to get u through the next few years.

Pros: Good quality for the price, clear documentation, solid functionality except for sound issue

Other Thoughts: I would love to see manufacturers not add onboard sound or video circuits.

Rating + 5 Nice board for quick video upgrade

Pros: Small footprint, upgrades my 3.1ghz 479 HT processor to better memory and pci-e speed. Had to get this board because my older ASUS wouldn't boot with SATA drives, not an issue with this board. Have it set up as a media pc and the difference between my Radeon 9700 and my new Radeon 4550 is phenomenal. HD tv broadcasts don't bog the system, etc.

Cons: Only has two fan connectors on the board, so prepare to get some 3-pin adapters if you're running a lot of fans. This is pretty much a VERY basic board, so don't expect a lot of frills;) Nothing much as far as cons go, definitely one of my more positive MB experiences.

Other Thoughts: This is a quick and simple upgrade when you've got a decent 478 processor lying around. I definitely wouldn't have even bothered with this if I had a celeron, or if I didn't already have a pci-e radeon card lying around from a previous build. Memory was kind of annoying, but they're cheap enough to find. Don't plan on your existing 478 memory to work with this board, most of the older stuff was different pin count...so grab some new memory while you're at it;)

Rating + 4 Nice upgrade

Pros: Updates a 478 to take advantage of ddr2, sata, and pci-e x16 which is awesome. Was shipped with latest bios, and instantly recognized all my hardware with no settings needing to be manually set. Small form factor size so will fit large and small cases.

Cons: Doesn't accept 20/24 pin power supplies as most newer boards accept both, but no biggie, just get an adapter if needed. Doesn't have gigabit lan, but on something this low end you wouldn't really expect it.
The only real con to the board is that it only has two fan connectors, one for the cpu and one for a case fan. And on top of only having two fan connectors, THE CPU FAN HAS NO VARIABLE CONTROL, which of course means that it runs at 100% all the time. You know, you didn't have to make it a 4 pin full variable fan header, but at least give us the option in the bios to limit the percentage of power being sent to the fan so that it doesn't sound like my pc is a miniature propellor airplane or speedboat. But, of course for an extra $5 you can get a zalman fanmate to limit the power being sent to the fan. That is why I deducted one egg.

Other Thoughts: All in all, great MB for upgrade of an old system. just get the fanmate to go with it like other users have stated.

Pros: Accepts your old 478 P4

Cons: Uses DDR2 memory
No printer port on back, needs cable from board printer port header to pci slot port adapter

Other Thoughts: The purpose of buying this board is to use an old 478 processor you have so why wouldn't Biostar utilize DDR memory instead of DDR2? If you have an old 478 P4 laying around, you probably have some DDR memory also.
Would it have killed Biostar to have included the parallel port on the rear panel instead of just a header? You need an adapter cable to an available pci slot to use the port.
Looking back, I should have scrapped the old processor and went with a new build.

Rating + 4 Saves an old comp

Pros: This board has PCI Express x16, working with a socket 478. This is one main reason why this board is so awesome. I was able to save my old setup without needing to upgrade the whole system just for a video card. Very easy to use BIOS. Has new features such as booting from USB, overclocking control. Very good bang for buck.

Cons: No Fan Control. It detects RPM of the fans, and has temperature sensors, but it does not regulate their speed. CPU Fan and case fan run at 100% all time. Made my computer sound like a cyclone. This usually gets annoying if you're trying to do paper work or school work.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to keep my Intel P4 2.8 Ghz single core still in play and have one of the newer vid cards. I ended up buying the Sapphire HD 2900GT with it, and it turned out to be a great deal. As for the fans, i later bought 2 ZALMAN FANMATE 2 fan controllers. Very cheap and useful and they got the job done.

Pros: I have had the mobo for over 2 years with no issues. Great board for the price for older chips!

Cons: None for what it is!

Other Thoughts: Would not bother changing the board but I am wanting to upgrade to a 775 chip!

Rating + 5 Very nice motherboard upgrade!

Pros: Two SATA ports for using SATA hard drives in conjunction with older IDE devices. Uses DDR2 667 memory while allowing me to keep my Intel Pentium 4 2.53 GHz processor from a previous build. Also has a PCI-Express x16 videocard slot

Cons: None that I have found.

Other Thoughts: I used this to replace an older AOpen motherboard that lost its ability to send a video signal to my monitor after only a year and a half. In order to keep my existing processor, I had to upgrade from DDR 400 MHz memory to DDR2 667 MHz, and upgrade to a PCI Express x16 videocard from AGP 8x, but it has been well worth it.

Rating + 5 Nice replacement

Pros: Running for a few weeks now. Booted up fine. Always disable shadow features on biostar boards unless you have a reason to use them. Built computer from old parts, needed a mainboard and this worked great. Running XP just fine, always boots with no problems.

Cons: Only had it for a few weeks now. None other than the fact that it is older technology but in a new board.

Other Thoughts: Purchased to make use of a Celeron D chip I had bought several years ago but used another chip. Had all other parts for computer, wanted something to hook up to new flat panel tv. I would buy this board again given the last few weeks experience. Have used biostar in the past and am fairly satisfied with their products.

Rating + 1 Fails to boot after a few months

Pros: Very inexpensive board to upgrade older P4 systems; attractive, color-coded connectors; supports all three FSB speeds (800/533/400 MHz); dual-channel RAM support.

Cons: The POST routine on these boards will start hanging after some use, after which time you'll have about a 5% chance that the system will boot. I don't understand why this is, but I've gone through two of these in the past year and a half for a customer, and they've both done the exact same thing. Clearing CMOS doesn't resolve, removing the battery makes no difference, and once is starts happening you basically have no choice but to replace the board...and wait for it to happen again. This is it for me: after the second board I've decided Biostar isn't worth spending another cent on.

Rating + 5 All 3 arrived PERFECT!

Pros: Bought 3 from Newegg. All 3 loaded without a hitch. All 3 run Windows 7 perfect. I did not need to even use the Driver CD, Windows 7 just "plug & play" all drivers... including sound, chipset, etc.

Installed all systems with P4@3.2 1MB Cache, 800FSB no issues. Have a P4@3.4 but web-site said it is not supported? So - just ran with the 3.2s and they are actually VERY FAST! Great platform for basic internet & Multi Media needs. - HULU anyone? Perfect for office work; Word Excel, Power Point, etc. Not recommended for Adobe After Effects, Premier Pro, Heavy High Definition Video Editing Programs.

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: Information you need to know. This is only 667 DDR2 in SINGLE channel - even with 2 matching sticks...

BIOS come with latest version - you don't need to worry about flashing/updating BIOS

If you are worried about only having SATA1 (150 MBs) limiting your hard drive? Don’t worry - if your hard drive is faster than 150MBs transfer speeds - it’s in the wrong computer! Even if it’s a SATA2, almost all SATA2 HDDs read/write less than 125MBs...

On board VGA JUST plays HULU full screen with ALMOST no stutter...

Does have PCI Express x16 for almost all modern Graphics Cards - BUT - I do not recommend using any sort of high end GPU with this board. P4 CPUs just don’t have the muscle to power today’s massive (even cheap) graphics cards - if you do add on a GPU should only be to improve the video playback, not recommended for any modern gaming...

Rating + 4 Good board for easy rebuild

Pros: Easy to set up and reuse parts from older computer. It makes a good machine for going online. Total build time was less than two hours.

Cons: After installing a video card, the audio did not work. It was fixed after a BIOS upgrade but you have to use a floppy drive to do it. Biostar USA doesn't have the new BIOS, I got it from the Biostar-Europe website.

Other Thoughts: If it wasn't for the audio and BIOS issues, I would rate this 5 stars. I haven't had a floppy drive or discs in years. Give it the ability to update the BIOS from CD or USB, please!

Pros: Worked liked a charm and easy to set up. All of the drivers included on the CD were the lastest version. Manual was detailed and easy to read.

Cons: None so far...

Other Thoughts: Installed this in a friend's computer due to his previous mobo dying on him. Not too many options for this Intel chip anymore.

Rating + 3 Keyboard no longer works

Pros: Worked well after installing it, no problems, until...

Cons: I bought this March 4th, 2008 to replace my Mom's dead PC, now over 1 year and 8 months and none of the keyboards will work on this machine. Neither PS/2 nor the USB keyboards are recognized and the Floppy Drive stopped working so we can't boot into Windows (Floppy Drive Error (80)). It also seems that the Mouse works because the laser is lite up but nothing doing with the keyboard, no lights or anything.

Other Thoughts: Long past the Newegg return policy and probably past the Biostar RMA option, so we can only save out pennies and buy a new PC. She only uses it for web browsing and solitaire.

Rating + 5 Great MoBo for old mPGA478 CPU's

Pros: Cheap. Stable. Very fast. It uses DDR2 667MHz single channel RAM.

Cons: SouthBridge is very HOT!!! Fixed this with a heatsink glued to SB. NorthBridge heatsink too small. Fixed with a fan glued to it. See also below.

Other Thoughts: Not really a con, just a warning: this MoBo needs a power supply with a -5V rail. You can see this as a WHITE cable in the 20 / 24 pin main connector of the supply. If you use another type of PSU, expect some failures, including but not limited to freezing the system.

Pros: Cheep. Lets you use some old hardware again.

Cons: When I buy cheep stuff I expect it to be cheep, but I don't expect it to be worthless. One port after another has gone out in a cascading failure that started almost immediately after purchase.

Other Thoughts: If you can find another brand that will work, do it. If not I guess roll the dice. Never again will I buy ANYTHING Biostar.

Rating + 5 Excellent Value for 478MB

Pros: * Paid ~55 - Great replacement board!
* Easy to install
* onboard Audio/Video works really well
* download latest audio drivers BEFORE! (biostar-usa.com)
Get the 6.2 version downloads
* download latest VIA chipset drivers also (via.com.tw)
* updated with SATA, etc.

Cons: * Price is high for this "old" board; probably as these aren't around much

Other Thoughts: * Onboard Video uses 256MB shared mem- so use at least 2GB (2x1GB) dual channel DDR2 667 RAM
* No problems at all!
* Config: 2.4GHz P4 HTT, 2x1GB Dual DDR2 667 RAM, 2x160GB 7200RPM EIDE HDD, XP Pro SP3, 32" LCD monitor, DVD ±R/RW Burner

Pros: great board when it works - on number 3 now
run a prescot 3.0 and it gets a little warm so get an aftermarket heat sink - ddr2 on a p4 board

Cons: they fail every 9 months almost like clockwork - i leave it on all day b/c of my website and it cant take it. thank goodness for the warranty

Other Thoughts: need more sata ports, RAID is tricky to set up, scrapped the board and replaced it with a zotac atom 330 ion cpu/board and it runs circles around the p4 board and uses about 1/3 the power

Rating + 5 Nice board

Pros: Very nicely balanced board. New features for your old Socket 478. Boards are getting harder to locate outside the refurb market. New 478 boards with warranty are pretty much unheard of these days.

Cons: Only uses SATA 150 native. A PCI Express controller alleviates this. No bios update available.

Other Thoughts: Only comes one SATA cable, though there are two SATA ports. I had no problems with the power/led connectors. The manual had them clearly marked for negative and positive leads. I usually update the bios before installing an OS, unable to do so as noted above. I only had DDR2 675. Runs at 667 without a hitch.

Pros: First board quit...could be my fault but not tellin...Biostar RMA'd it. Second board running over a year now as my "lab rat" in testing operating systems...Linux, XP, Win7...yes thats right a 2.8 ghz Prescott on Win 7 RC, it runs very well. Drivers not an issue.

Cons: Not enough Sata connections...oh well. Could use nicer heat sinks on the voltage regulators since they get really warm.

Other Thoughts: Wow, Nov 09 and people are still buying this board! Great board if you are still determined to get your 100 plus dollars out of the 478 pin Intel processor. Nuff said.

Pros: lots of features for the price and what it is. it brings life back to my old 478 prescott that would otherwise just collect dust.
sata raid support 1.5gb. 4 usb ports in back room for more inside. takes 800mhz memory goto mfr. site to see list of vendors. pci-ex x16-1.0.
no unnecessary stuff i dont need. works well with ubuntu 9.10

Cons: no cons really. be careful your 667 memory may cause erratic behavior default voltage is 1.9v hence i take away 1 egg. BUT not a big con. prescott only support for this bios an upgrade MAY fix this.. or NOT...

Other Thoughts: i bought one a long time ago here at the egg. just not a big fan of having to pay to return a DUD. so i went local this time i am using this primarily to build a ubuntu ftp server. for my use. i dont need a fancy system for that so this will do till i can build that 12 core dual chip amd beast. on an ALMOST petaflop scale.

Rating + 5 Working 478/Win7/GTX260

Pros: Arrived as described. I installed this board to replace an old ASUS P4P800S-X that was starting to fail. Worked fine, posted immediately. Finding a socket 478 board with newer capabilities is the pro of this story.

Cons: None yet. Was leery of all the DOA reports, but for me, it was plug and play. Here's where I could write all the things I wish it had, but knew before I ordered it, because I read the specs and had reasonable expectations.

Wish: At least 1 more fan header

Other Thoughts: Had I known about this board or something like it, I would have upgraded long ago. Built the original machine in 2004 and it was showing its age. With the DDR2 and the GTX 260, my old P4 2.4GHz (not overclocked) is now less bogged down and hums along very nicely. All that I might add now is another fan and maybe max out the RAM.

System Specs:
OS: Windows 7 (Build 7600)
Case: Antec SLK2600AMB
CPU: P4 2.4GHz (SL88F; Prescott) w/stock cooling block and fan (Arctic Silver 5 in between)

Rating + 5 Great 478 Prescott Board

Pros: Great way to replace failed mobos on P4 systems.
Utilizes fast, dirt cheap DDR2
PCIE16 video and SATA
the board is well reinforced under the CPU mount
My P4 3.0 478 systems never ran faster!
I've built two systems already with this board and both are running perfectly.

Cons: Memory slots are very close together
Memory slot release clip will bump against video card slot tab

Other Thoughts: I disregard the previous complaints for two reasons:
1) Intel built a wide variety of different CPUs on socket 478. This board is designed for late model P4s. Nothing else is going to work well in it. Use a Prescott-based P4 or Celeron.
Also-You cannot use special purpose P4's in this board. I bought one of these by mistake from geeks. Luckily I was able to return it. It took some research but I found that the P4 3GHz I bought was specially made for a certain vendor. Make sure you check your model number thoroughly.
2) Like anything else, you can't attach this to a $15 power supply and expect to get good results. Use a high quality power supply that consistently puts out clean DC.
I just ordered my third board so I can use my last P4 for a WHS build.

Rating + 5 Brings new hope to an old chip

Pros: Reliable, very little heat from the chipsets. Onboard basic necessities get you started (SATA,shared video, sound, several usb, the usual for boards these days)
The specifications are the Pros for your old processor!
Purchased FOUR of these and had little to no trouble.Set everything up and i was surprised at the performance I was getting out of these chips even using IDE drives and some slower DDR2 RAM.Naturally a clean setup is to be fast, but these were awesome. Place your 800FSB P4, some DDR2 800mhz and a sata or two on this and let it rip!

Cons: I had trouble running 400mhz FSB chips on these boards.I tried a couple different 400FSB chips and still the problem. Though the manual lists it's capable, they will post but I could not for the life of me get an XP setup to even pass the first reboot. BSOD or a freeze each time. Once i use a 533FSB or 800FSB i'm fine.Other than that I've not had any probs!

Other Thoughts: I had 1 machine w/ 2.93ghz CeleronD,pci-e R4350-512mb,1gb-DDR800,running Quake 4 at playable rates with lower settings (20-40fps) & naturally older games would run fine.Better vid card & I think it would have been perfect (was a $35 video card)
Make sure you have your XP updates installed first before installing audio drivers; Smooths that part of the process out.I bought 4 of these under my boss' account :D to fix up some machines to resell fast.I have a bit of old hardware stacked up and this help move out some cases and parts without throwing anything away & the idea was to make some extra cash anyway. They're all satisfied and I've not had any complaints.I plan to buy a few more and keep a couple for myself as well! If you have an old gamer's rig with some 800FSB chip,I recommend this board if you want a budget upgrade or to bring some old parts back to life.PCI-e cards & DDR2 chips can be obtained cheap & at least when you buy newer parts you can later use them on a newer board.

Cons: Has a lot of promise, but falls short. I have been building systems for over 25 years and built over 3,000 systems and this is by far the worst motherboard I have ever used. Boot problems, sometimes will other times won't. Tried many different manufactures of memory and still no good. Tried many CPU's, replaced motherboard once and the rma was not any better. I gave this motherboard every chance to work correctly tried replacing every componet many times and it was never stable. Be careful as I will never use this motherboard again.

Pros: Nice replacement for Emachine, everything is working as expected. Reloaded XP Pro without any problems.

Cons: None considering date of the board and new tech. Yes it would be nice if it was SATA 3.0 and PCI Express x16 2.0. But if you have some 478 CPU's this is a good update.

Other Thoughts: I will purchase one or two more to update some additional computers. Like every good upgrade you have to weight the parts you have against the cost of starting to replace the items.

Rating + 5 Back from the dead...

Pros: It's alive! It's aliiiive! Franken-puter. This is a great board if you have a pile of junk laying about that you need to assemble into a functional computer.

It lets older P4s stretch their metaphoric legs with faster RAM and less bottle-necked video. The 2.26 gHz P4 in this screams compared to the old Dell with DDR 266 and 8X AGP that it was in.

Cons: Micro-ATX. I'd have really preferred a full size ATX option with a couple of PCI-e slots and a few additional SATA plugs. PCI-E v2.0 instead of 1.0/1.1. SATA 3.0 vs. SATA 150.

Then again that would have raised the price to the point where I could have justified spending a bit more on a New CPU and RAM. Also, with a micro-ATX board I'm justified in getting an HTPC box so the wife unit won't have to look at the big ugly beige box on the dresser.

Overclocking is negligible. The BIOS options seem not to work, and the included "warpspeeder" program is non-functional. Then again, this is a 7 year old CPU, overclocking is academic at this point and really somewhat undesirable for a media PC anyway.

The ATX jack is 24 pin. My old 230w power supply plug is 20 pin. However, even with a low-end PCI-e card in the X16 slot, the machine boots. YMMV particularly if you have a power sucking high end graphics card.

So, basically no cons at all!

Other Thoughts: I assembled this board with the cast off P4 2.26 ghz cpu, power supply and 80gb hdd from a co-worker's lightning struck Dell that was given to me. Toss in an ATI PCI-e x300 gratis from the local computer salvage shop and 1 gb of Corsair DDRII 675 XMS left over from upgrading the wife's PC. Drop it all into the yawning chasm in a beige full tower PII era ATX case with an antique DVD drive from 1998 until I can afford a proper HTPC case. It runs Windows Media center in Windows 7 quite well.

Discounting the 2.3 graphics score due to the low-end vid card, the Windows experience score is 3.9. Not too shabby for less than 3/4 of a Benjamin in total expenditure.

Rating + 3 NOT THAT GOOD !!!!

Pros: Price was low. It gave my Pentium 4 1.5 years of extra life. Lets you use PCI-E video card w/ a socket 478 processor.

Cons: I RMA'd this board 3 times. It gave me many BSODs. Biostar only responded once to my emails. It also had a lot of lock-ups. And like many others have said, it's longevity is about as long as the warranty (1 year). It's also incompatible w/ some newer vid cards, like the Geforce 8800 (as i've heard)

Other Thoughts: I'd recommend that u buy something else and really forget about keeping your Pentium 4 alive w/ this board. I bought this board to save money by using a PCI-E vid card w/ my P4 socket 478 CPU and not having to upgrade my CPU to an expensive LGA 775. I did save money, but got a lot of headaches b/c of this board's unreliability.

First board died with no warning @ 13 months after install. Guess how long the warrantee is good for...

Other Thoughts: If you can get a replacement plan extra, its probably a real good idea... Works great otherwise, 2nd board installed easily after bios flash, heres hoping I wont have to do it yet again in 12-13 mo or so...

Rating + 5 great motherboard!

Pros: *DDR2 memory is significantly cheaper than DDR and before.
*Very well designed board - makes it easy to keep everything organized and looking nice. Also allows more airflow. CPU stays at low temp with just air cooling.
*Sata connections made my CD-Rom much faster than my previous IDE-based CD-Rom.
*SATA Hard Drive also much faster than my IDE Hard Drive.
*Has onboard video. Makes install significantly easier!! Sounds trivial, but it's awesome.

Cons: *Not really a cons, but:
*Required a more modern power supply. 24pin instead of 20pin.
*Didn't come with heatsink. Since A lot of people are upgrading from old pre-bought computers, it would have made since to include a heatshrink that works with the board....but not really a con...
*Package contents mention some optional parts I wish I would have received, but didn't:
-FDD Cable
-S/PDIF Cable - (For connecting video card to onboard audio so HDMI will carry audio)(Great for using computer as a Home Theatre PC)
-SATA Power Cable
**
*NewEgg Doesn't mention whether you will get Version 5.x or 6.x
*6.x has more modern audio outputs.

Other Thoughts: *Great user manual. Thorough instructions.
*Made my computer significantly faster!
*I cannot believe that the DDR2 and the Higher FSB made my computer this much quicker. It is amazing for my games now.
*It was VERY simple for anyone thinking of doing it themselves.
*Very fast shipping and came well packaged.

Rating + 5 AIO Great Replacement 478 MB

Pros: Great simple 478 MB, with ALL the trimmings- including new version 6.2 (HD Audio). Comes w/everything you need. Simple to install and works right out of the box! Has onboard video(256MB shared), audio(6ch-HD), 2 x IDE-133, 2 x Sata I-1.5, 2 x 240pin DDR2 667 Single channel (upto 4GB), takes P4 & Celeron- Latest BIOS revision (2009-01-17) is flash-updated already- $55.

NewEgg is the BEST! Got it in a day!!

Cons: * High price for an 'old' 478 MB (maybe that's why!)
* Manual is too simple- not really needed, and if you need something, it is NOT in there! NO chapter on BIOS options! Some options are pretty cryptic!!
* Only 2 DIMM; Sata I only (NOT II-3GBps); Only 2 PCI;
* Only single channel memory not dual!
* BIOS options are whacked- only certain combinations- or it won't boot- IF Uninformed, it is best to use OPTIMIZED setting!
* Previous MB Audio/Video drivers interfere w/setup- Need to delete ALL drivers and then use CD to setup Video, Audio
* BIOS setting default for MB- HD Audio disabled (No sound!)
* Audio drivers on CD don't work- download from Newegg- Mfg support page - New VT1708 Audio codec
http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/driver.php?S_ID=402
* µATX is hard to work with (but we knew that already!)
*

Other Thoughts: Usually in MB replacements I start with a minimum configuration (MB+CPU+RAM+1HDD+VGA) and then add everything one at a time, rebooting each time. This time I just removed the old mb, put in this one, attached EVERYTHING, and booted- It worked the first time except for the audio, (really the second time- having to use an old monitor to use basic VGA and setting up the Video drivers from the CD, before I could use my already installed new 32" flat screen TV/monitor!) If you need to replacea MB for a 478 socket- get this one! Possibly worth the $55 (e.Bay, etc. have nothing! best other out there is ~52)

Rating + 5 Nice Board

Pros: So far its working Like a champ:D
USB 2.0 Did install for me with windows SP2

Cons: On-board Graphics Kinda Blows, I can run older games alright , on 128MB shared.
when I play Audio I get system slow down but that may not be the integrated aduio's fault, I think I may have faulty RAM :[]

Other Thoughts: This Board Dose support 400Mhz Processors, Just don't expect to get very far with Overclocking :]
You can install SATAII(300) Drives but they will only work at 1.5(150) speeds, same goes for the PCIe 2.0, it will only work at 1.0a speeds
Also for those Overclocking through BIOS and don't wish to increase RAM speeds, change bios setting that's operated by the SPD, and change it from Auto to a lower speed, such as 266 233 200, when you do this, it still is multiplied by the FSB just at a lower speed. (im not overclocking waiting for my New Proc and Videocard :D)

Current specs
P4 2.2ghz/400/Northwood
1gb kingstion 667mhz

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Doesn't work with my PCI video card, which worked perfect in my old motherboard. It's(Geforce 9400) allegedly incompatible. Terrible tech support who barely even tried to help me. Their answer was for me to buy a new video card.

Rating + 5 I AM IMPRESSED

Pros: Well lets see it will work with Xp, Vista, W7, Ubuntu. This was used for my first built and i could not be happier. Solidly built board. Any mistakes that i did with anything it would recover without any problems. I installed a LOT of OS in it and the drivers would be picked up immediately. Also on the pcie slot it will accept a 2.0 card. With a 9400gt Nvidia card, a 7200 rpm hard drive, 2.8Gz processor with 3gb of ram it would score a 4.8 in windows. Considering that i when to Best Buy the other day and if you look strictly at the lowest number most of then scored a 4. something. So not bad for a new board with old parts.

Cons: ONLY 2 CONS. 1 i will not takes 64 bit software so limit is 3gb of ram. 2 Processor fan is running a like 5000 rpm all the time making this one of the loudest computers i ever heard. But i knew that a P4 board would not accept 64 bit software so no lost egg and the whole thing with the fan can be fixed with an external fan control .

Other Thoughts: I recommend this board for a person who wants to built a first computer and start messing around with overclocking. Obviously a little too simple for an experienced builder and overclocker but excellent for a person who is learning and who can pick up P4 processors for about 20 bucks. I do however remind you that you can only use 32 bit software here so you will be limited. And don't forget a fan controller.

Rating + 4 The only one

Pros: The only MB I could find from numerous sites with PCI-e x16 and a semi-legacy 467 socket CPU.

Cons: Only has two DIMM sockets but does handle up to 4GB; had to order different modules after the fact .
Would have been nice to have an extra USB controller.
Missing printer port, but who needs that anymore.

Other Thoughts: This was a smooth transition from another MB. I got the new 3D video card needing the PCI-e x16 slot and wanted to transfer existing CPU and RAM. Had to give up a USB board mount, but never needed that many anyway. Video works great, system temp seems cooler. Was happy to get a cage bezel that actually fit with this MB too.

Rating + 4 Mobo died on me

Pros: Worked great right out of the box, booted up,and excepted OS. Did all that I needed it to do + hours of World of Warcraft...then she died : (

Cons: Mobo died after a year and a half of hard labor, I guess thats not to bad. There's no other board out there for P4 478 cpu's that will do what this one will at its cost. Time for a new one.

Other Thoughts: If you look through the reviews for " My latest budget build " you will see my entire computer build.

Other Thoughts: This was replacement of the exact same board ordered 6 months earlier that just died... I would avoid this board if possible... Unfortunatly it's the only choice here for this Proccessor :( It would be great if Newegg offered some choices!

Rating + 5 Breath New Life into your old P4

Pros: I want to extend the life of my system and was having issues with my old motherboard. So I bought this. Its worth the money if you want to extend the life of an old P4 processor. I paired it with 2 gigs of PNY memory and a P4 2.8 GHZ. The memory is super cheap. I was up an running in a few minutes. Its small and would fit into a mini atx case. I would recommend if you already have all the other parts laying around. The onboard video is fine for everyday computing. I don't play any games. I didn't need to re-install XP or anything.

Cons: Bios-It wants you to have a floppy drive or press F1 every time you start up. Not a big deal.

Pros: Like all Biostar products this is a very good one. Very easy to set up and use and a great price. Even those whose tech understanding is less will have no problem setting this motherboard up and using it. The documentation is easy to follow and guides you through the process. If you have need of a motherboard with 478 socket, this is definately the one.

Cons: None

Rating + 5 Good retro motherboard

Pros: Don't expect state of the art because this is a retro board for socket 478 processor. But if you have a high end case, 600W power supply, 3.0 HT Processor and almost 1Tb of PATA HDD's like I have then you got a lot of money invested in equipment and don't want to just chuck it out! This board worked great out of the box, I threw in new memory, Crucial 2x1GB 240 pin DDR2 SDRAM 667 (PC 5300) and was good to go. I had to do a repair install on Windows XP Pro which was expected because of diff bios and Windows wouldn't boot. I had two ASrock P4AL800 motherboards that died in this system, nothing was overclocked but after a few years they started locking up. This motherboard is much faster than they were. The on-board sound and video is good for everyday apps but if your a gamer like I am the video sucks. I then purchased an Asus EN8400GS video card from Newegg, stuck it in and now World of Warcraft Rocks again!! BTW if you have a tech question, Biostar's tech support is great!

Cons: None if you know what your doing!

Other Thoughts: NOTE: if you buy a video card for this board please be aware that the PCI-E is not 2.0, you will need to get a first generation video card for it like I did which Newegg has plenty in-stock. Also if your power supply has a 20 pin power plug this board has a 24 pin power plug socket but the 20 pin supply plug will work and plug into it to one side. But if you add a PCI-E video card get the 20 PIN Female-24 PIN Male Power Adapter Cable, it's cheap from Newegg.

Rating + 4 Breat MoBo for old 478CPU's

Pros: Very fast. It uses DDR2 memory. It has PCI-E.

Cons: Price. I wanted to be on $24.99 to buy more, je, je, je. Ah! Forgot to say a high temperature on NB and SB issues.

Other Thoughts: I bought one last year and used for a mini server 6 hrs a day with 4 DVD-RW units and 2 SATA HDD in RAID 0 configuration. Last month, when turned on my system, it didn't recognize the RAID volume and reported a problem with a HDD. I dissolved the array, formatted the 2 HDD's and tested them on another PC and all test were OK. I made again the RAID 0 volume with the same HDD's but after a week, it failed again. I left ny system with only one SATA HDD and it's working well.

Somebody wrote a post recommending glue a heatsink for the SB and add a fan to NB. I've done that and I will be soon testing again with the RAID set.

Coincidently, Iv'e just bought another MoBo of these and I've tested it and runs well.

Rating + 5 A Reliable Cost Effective Motherboard

Pros: I have used this motherboard for several of my customers. It is a very small motherboard that will fit into several mini towers out there, if you do not have room for a big tower case. Another good thing about this board is that, audio, video and the ethernet port are on board which allows you to save a lot especially if you are working with a tight budget. Before you buy this board, check the types of CPU that it supports from Biostar website. Socket 478 processors are becoming very scarce in the market these days.

Cons: This board does not have a parallel port for a parallel printer. So if you buy this board, you will have to change your printer or, instead, buy a wireless network printer. If you plan to use intel cpu cooling fan, be very careful because the cooling fan/heatsink retainer bracket that ships with this board is not that strong. I had to replace the heatsink retainer bracket after six months for severals of my customers who had this motherboard in their systems. If the intel cooling fan is very tight during installation, don't use it. Use another cooling fan/heatsink. Newegg has a lot of them in stock.

Other Thoughts: I will continue to use this board intil there is no cpu match for it.

Rating + 4 A little picky

Pros: It's currently the only socket 478 motherboard still sold here, and it looks like a reasonable board. However, the processor I planned to use with it is not compatible, so I haven't been able to test it yet.

Cons: This is somewhat my fault, but I didn't realize that this board does not work with all socket 478 Celeron CPUs.

Other Thoughts: Not compatible with Celeron's that use a Willamette core. Evidently it also does not work with a SL7NC (Intel Mobile Pentium 4 552), unless the CPU I have is bad.

Pros: I love this board its sleek and nice looking. Used my old pentium 4 478 socket processor and runs better and faster than ever. Has newer upgrades for the old processors

Cons: doesn't look like it does in the picture but looks better

Other Thoughts: make sure you buy some thermal paste if you have none for the processor. Goes between the processor and the heatsink

Rating + 5 Second life for my 478 Pentium 3.2

Pros: Does what's expected.
Price is right.
Has PCI-E slot, byebye AGP.
Has video on board if you want to go loooow cost.
Has network card on board.
Takes RAM that's cheap these days.
Well build on inspection.
Started like a charm.
Easy to use bios.
Small - if that matters.

Cons: Does not come with Parallel port adapter - port is present on board, and I actually needed it.
Otherwise, I have nothing to complain about.

Other Thoughts: When another AGP video card died in my Pentium 3.2 478-based system, I took this chance to give a fairly good 3.2GHz HT CPU another lease of life.
This board has video on it (can run your office apps), but I also had no problem finding spare PCI-E 7600 card to put in it. This was always the problem with old AGP mobo. I also had a spare 1Gig of DDR2 Ram.
Made a perfect and fast office PC, I have Nv7600 card to add to it, can be a'ok gaming pc. For the price, das ist fantastich.

Pros: Replaced a dead HP OEM MB, transfering the CPU and installing new DDR2 memory. Ran XP Recovery and am back up and running except faster. Needed a 350 watt supply to power up. Way cheeper that a new PC.

Cons: none except could not reuse the old DDR memory, AGP video card, and under powered supply.

Other Thoughts: I plan to buy another one as a spare.

Rating + 4 Caution!!!

Pros: This motherboard works fine, after purchasing a new case for it (see: Cons--I ras replacing an IBM/Lenovo OEM Motherboard with a somewhat proprietary HD/Power switch wiring connection).

Cons: As with any motherboard replacement on a brand name desktop system--be prepared to purchase a new case if the cable to the switch and hard drive indicator lights is a single row jumper style connector with all of the wires lined up.

Other Thoughts: If you have an IBM/Lenovo desktop, attempt to get a spare OEM Motherboard from them first.

Also, get the 4GB Patriot Memory kits.... You only get one chance to fill 2 slots, so add that extra memory--especially if you will be running Vista (32-bit) on it.

Rating + 5 Good Motherboard

Pros: The motherboard is a great replacement for the socket 478. Fast BIOS, [Overclocking capabilities], includes SATA ports. Great HTPC motherboard, when paired with a DXVA capable GPU, i.e Nvidia 8400GS.

Cons: There is unfortunately no CPU votage control with this motherboard, the overclocking is simple yet it will be limited since overclocking the FSB includes overclocking the RAM. There is no way to unlink the RAM.

Thermal sensors were dead on the first motherboard, it reported 127C.

Other Thoughts: Comments say, "it won't run a 8800GT". That may be true but why would someone want to run a 8800GT with a Pentium 4 CPU? It would cause a huge bottleneck.

Good replacement everday motherboard, started with no issues. Will buy again! Reccomended to people that need a S478 motherboard!
