Decent, Get What You Pay For
Pros: Solid metal case with plastic feet/extras. Not flimsy. Sockets on back far enough apart to accommodate thicker heavier duty cables without problem. Works. No proprietary cables. Longer cables can be found just have to remember to get male to female vga cables. Works with Windows XP, Mandriva Linux including 2009(never had a problem even when it was mandrake) Hotswap no problem. No Ghosting from any other channels. Button to change computers is big and easy to hit. USB mouse and MS USB keyboard work fine(1 exception, below), Razor mouse wheel & buttons work fine. Works at BIOS level, minus a few older mobo's so I still do have to keep a PS2 handy just in case.
Cons: Depending on lighting orange "computer ready" lights are tough to see. After a while (8mos-year) hitting the change puter button results in it skipping over a computer or two. Frustrating to have to hit it just right or at least a few times to get the actual computer you wanted. One linux box doesn't like sitting unattended. I switch to it & it's dead no power. Have to unplug/replug usb cable. Doesn't happen every time, possibly power issue as I tend to knock out the power adapter occasionally.
Other Thoughts: For the money not bad for what you get. You put up with a few bugs to save the couple hundred it would cost to get something more solid. At it's core it functions cleanly and well, but definitely not perfect
Manufacturer Response:You were right about the value this unit offers, and it is not perfect, but it cost less than other IOGEAR USB KVMs. GCS104U is a low end and early version of the IOGEAR KVMPs. IOGEAR have 2nd gen and even 3rd gen of USB KVMPs (P stands for USB peripheral sharing). Our 2nd generation of the USB KVMP is GCS1734, which has audio/mic. On the computer side, it supports either USB or PS/2 computers (you do have to buy the PS/2 cables, USB cables are included in the package), it also offers switching through keyboard. The 3rd generation is GCS1804, it has OSD, and keyboard switching, and USB 2.0 peripheral sharing. What really worth mentioning is the multi-level switching. For all these newer KVMP, they allow you to switch keyboard/mouse to one computer so you can work from that computer, but at the same time, you can hook up USB based peripherals such as printer or external hard drives, to another computer, and have audio hooked up to th 3rd computer.

Great for dual-box gaming!
Pros: I use this KVM switch to dual-box World Of Warcraft with my USB gaming keyboard and mouse on a 1680 x 1050 widescreen LCD. No degradation of video quality or control precision whatsoever. Setup was amazingly easy, the included cables were plenty long enough for my current workstation setup, and overall build quality of the unit is very solid. And of course Newegg rocks for getting this to me early, as usual :-)
Cons: I can't complain too much or subtract from my 5/5 score because I was aware of all of the following "cons" from other customer reviews and there was really no other KVM switch sold here that met all my needs. But here are 3 mild annoyances: 1) Having to cycle through two other unused switch positions before getting back to the two I actually use. 2) I have to wait about 3 seconds when switching for keyboard/mouse to be "re-recognized" by the next computer. 3) Around 5% of the time, the switchover fails on either the keyboard or the mouse (usually the mouse). This is quickly resolved by either cycling through all 4 switch positions again or by unplugging/replugging my USB mouse in the back of the unit.
Other Thoughts: This is a huge upgrade over my previous "hotkeyed" KVM switch which needed my old PS2 keyboard/mouse to work.

Does anyone make a good KVM?
Pros: Comes with 4 cables Self-powered (so it works more consistently)
Cons: NO keyboard switching Useless plastic Non-integrated (thick) cables
Other Thoughts: I've been searching for a half way decent KVM, and it looks like my search continues. And I don't think I'm asking for much: 1. USB-based 2. Keyboard switching 3. Self-powered 4. Small I tried the Trendnet TK-407K KVM and it sucked worse than this one because it was USB powered...which might sound nice, except if you power off a PC you can no longer switch using the KB hotkeys. Looks like if you really want a KVM that just works prepare to spend $350 bucks.
Manufacturer Response:Thanks for trying the IOGEAR GCS104U, which is our first generation USB KVM. Some of the concerns addressed here have already been resolved in some higher end models, for example, IOGEAR GCS1734 and GCS634U both do keyboard switching. IOGEAR brand new GCS1804 even offer OSD. All IOGEAR 4 ports include cables. Currently GCs1734 is sold on NewEgg.com for $119.99, and GCS634U for $99.99, so it will not cost you $350, as a matter of fact, it will not cost $350 even if you buy both. Regarding whether bus power or not, here is the guideline: if the KVM does not offer additional USB ports for peripheral sharing (sharing printers, external hard drives, flash drives, etc.), then bus power is OK. GCS634U is the best example. If you want to share some USB devices among the two computers, then external power adapters in necessary to assure we have enough power to drive the task. Also, all IOGEAR USB based KVM support Mac and Linux.

KVM
Pros: Works great. True USB switching. Works with Logitech G15 Keyboard.
Cons: It would be nice if it had seperate buttons to switch straight to the computer you want to control.

I got a dud.
Pros: Works... Kinda.
Cons: Missing keyboard hotkey feature, mine has issues, see other thoughts.
Other Thoughts: After about a year of ownership the button that switches from one input to the next stopped working properly. It seems to skip to a random input every time you press it now. It's frustrating, but for 100 bones, I can't afford to replace it with something new. Unhappy.

Not Terrible...
Pros: Functional. Works eventually. Comes with cables.
Cons: Very slow mouse and keyboard recognition, (3-5 seconds). No hotkeys. Provided cables are only 3' long making them useless in most situations.
Other Thoughts: I have never used a KVM that had such a slow response time when switching between systems and the lack of hotkeys makes the unit annoying to use. I bought the unit for bench testing at work and really wish I hadn't, (I hate doing returns).

No Complaints
Pros: It works well so far. I'm using it on some older machines that have Windows XP Pro and Win 2000 Server.
Cons: Using it on a computer that has always had PS2 keyboards and mice, and has never had USB keyboards or mice. But it's not really the device's fault....
Other Thoughts: Don't try to get a PS/2 converter for your keyboard or mouse, and use it on this device. I would recommend using native USB keyboards on this device. Also, sometimes when I switch back to a computer which has been inactive for a while, there is a 3-10 second delay before the keyboard and mice are recognized.
Some older computers need to have a PS2 keyboard plugged the first time that you log in, so that Windows can install the USB drivers for the first time. Once you have logged in once, you should be able to shut down, remove the PS2 keyboard thereafter.
Better yet, plug the usb keyboard and mouse into the computer while you are logged in and let the drivers install. Then you can shut down, and remove the PS2 stuff and install this device just fine.
The transition from PS2 to USB is a small pain, but its nice being all-USB now.

Use to work great
Pros: Great Product.
Cons: I've had this product for over 2 years and I never had a problem. But since I upgrade 1 of my systems to Vista Ultimate, the mouse has become sporatic with this device. If I connect the mouse up directly to the new computer, the mouse works great. Now I'm looking for another one that is ...I guess, "Vista Certified".

very reliable
Pros: Reliable for 5+ years so far. Sharp and clear display at 1280x1024 on a CRT. USB, high quality cables included. Has worked great for me with Windows and Linux.
Cons: Several computers I've used on this KVM will not recognize an attached USB keyboard before the OS takes over, even if USB legacy or DOS support is enabled in the BIOS. (Attach a PS2 for BIOS access.) Even though the housing is metal it's light - I use the screw mounting slots on the base for stability.
Other Thoughts: Note: I don't use hot-keys, the USB hub, or auto scan features. (USB is only 1.1 anyway.) If I need to work with the BIOS of an attached computer, I hook up a PS2 keyboard directly for reliability, although this is not necessary for all motherboards.

Not Impressed
Pros: It does work between Ubuntum, Mandrake (on an older machine) and WinXP (on a newer machine)
Cons: It can take up to ten seconds for the mouse to be recognised when you switch between computers. There doesn't seem to be hot keys, SO the only way to switch is to use the hardware switch. Which brings me to my mext point: That switch forces you to ALWAYS cycle through all 4 computers.
Other Thoughts: I wish I could use my old PS/2 switch, because it worked flawlessly for years, even with a USB mouse. Not so with the USB kbd. But, for a hundred dollars, I'm not too pleased with this new KVM, which means that Newegg might be issuing an RMA Real Soon Now.

Very nice
Pros: I had gone through several cheapies and really just wish I had bought this from the get-go. I've been using it for over a year now and it's been great, not a single problem or glitch. It does take a second to switch over, but this seems to be dependant on how fast your system loads the USB drivers.
Cons: The little Windows bubble complaining that it's not USB 2.0, whoever designed the color scheme is either colorblind or on crack.

Pros: Works as advertised! Just like the other reviews there is a slight delay when switching between computers to use the keyboard and mouse, but it isn't ever really an issue. Works great with USB and all the cables were included. I definetly recommend this product!
Cons: The cables that were supplied were somewhat short. Other than that issue, this product is great!

Still keeps on going
Pros: Easy to setup, it comes with all the cablesyou need to hook up 4 computers, and power supply. Setup takes less than 15 minutes (depending on your workstation). I deal with computers on a day to day basis, and having one monitor is easier than having 4 layout on the desk. A real desk saver.
Cons: Not DVI nor doesn't it support dual monitors, and switching between monitors a bit slow, 5-15 seconds to wake up a machine that has been sleeping. Got extra cash? Save up for the DVI-input model.
Other Thoughts: I've had this device for the last 3 years and it's still going great, nothing broke yet. It's perfect for those with little desk space, and it sits right next to my monitor for easy switching. Worth the investment without hurting the wallet, and without cluttering space.

very low budget
Pros: It works with my 3 PCS. It is acutally a 4 port USB KVM, no PS/2 at all.
Cons: Put a little more money into a purchase of a fully native USB KVM. There isn't an option for hotkey switching from the keyboard. Flimsy design and manufacturing.

Pretty Good
Pros: Works like a charm. Does what you need it to do and without complaint. It's especially nice to use as a poor mans docking station for a laptop (the reason I bought it in the first place)
Cons: Connecting cables are SHORT. Better have your PC's, monitor, mouse and keyboard all within a few feet of each other or you're going to have problems. I had to rearrange my office to get everything close enough to connect.
Other Thoughts: I used a two computer system for years that connected via PS/2 and used a hot key to switch. This one works much better and has NEVER locked up on me.

Good Product, Good Price.
Pros: Price is excellent for such a product. extra USB ports that can be shared between all machines. Higher resolution monitors work fine.
Cons: Lack of hot-key swapping (but you knew that when you bought it)
Included KVM cables are a little on the short side... those machines should be on the same side of the desk.

I don't recomend this for commercial/industry use
Pros: The unit is very compact and easy to use.
Cons: I purchased 3 of these KVM's and they all do the same thing. If you leave them on more than 3-4 hours without use, they no longer talk to the keyboard/mouse on any of the PC's they are connected. Therefore, you have to unplug the unit(s) (power them off) and plug them back in to make it start working again.
Other Thoughts: This is one computer related piece of equipment in my opinion does not work the way it should. I wish I could get rid of them.

Ugly, but good value
Pros: - Good feature / price ratio. - Completely USB - Includes all cables
Cons: - Looks ugly - No direct switching
Other Thoughts: There are two kinds of USB KVM's: (a) ones that emulate the keyboard / mouse and (b) ones that pass the connection through just like a hub. Emulating KVM's trick the PC's into thinking that the keybaord / mouse is always connected which allows very fast switching. The drawback is that special features (like scroll wheels, etc) do not work. Passthrough KVM's electronically disconnect the keyboard / mouse from one PC to the next. Switching is slow (about 3 seconds total); however, all of the extra features work.
WHO SHOULD BUY THIS: People with specialty keyboards and mice that use the extra features.
WHO SHOULD NOT BUY THIS: Impatient system administrators used to working on rackmount consoles with instant-switch KVM connections.

Pros: came with cables, easy to setup, works with media keyboard and all functions on it. i also like that it works on my dell 2405fpw. (1920x1200)
Cons: as far as i can tell, the cables arent that good. the signal to the monitor was doing some funny echoing?? with the letters which i just couldnt stand. i ordered new cables with good insulation, and a ferrus magnet. the signal is now spot on and clear. definately recommend ordering better cables that will clean the line up if you have problems on big monitors.

Why didn't I know about these sooner!!!
Pros: No software needed, works flawlessly with mac and windows, super easy to use and can be set up by your kids or family pet. Takes up very little room on the desk. Great price point for how well it works. Clean look, takes up about the same space and my DSL modem, minimal switch time approx 1 1/2-3 sec's. No hot key headaches!!
Cons: wish it had audio switching as well so I could use one set of speakers for all the 'puters. I saw other KVM's out there that did. Must use USB mouse and KB. Oh well I needed a new KB anyway.
Other Thoughts: I'm pretty technically inclined but didn't even know these things were out there. I'm now running 1 PowerMac, 1 MacMini & 2 Windows based desktops off of this unit and have yet had any problems. I am interested if it will work with my powerbook when I get that next year.
Even though this does not switch audio that is ok as I keep my music on and stream iTunes from my macmini. I don't really care what my PC has to bleep about. May get a standalone audio switch or make one. If you're going to use mac and windows PC's together buy this switch or it's 2 channel little brother. I did the research and this one is the best for the money and I guarantee it to work or you can send it to me along with $20 and I will thank you.

Great Box - Good For Gamers as Well
Pros: What can I say.. this thing works as advertised and Well... i will have to add. I usually keep 2 PCs going - 1 for Gaming the other for production stuff... The Mini View works well, Even with multimedia keyboards and gaming Mouses like Logitech's G5 mouse. I been playing Doom 3 and a few other titles and things don't go crazy when i jump around from session to session. What more can u ask for.
Cons: The cables could stand to be a bit longer than the included 6 footers...and sometimes i have found i have to boot up a PC with the session on that pc to recognize it... all things I can live with..
Other Thoughts: For new egg's price... its worth the investment... since I work on family and friends PCs all the time the 2 extra setups help.. so my space doesnt get disturbed... rebuild a pc on one channel.. go gaming on another while you reinstall an OS.. Life is good.

Better than more expensive KVM's
Comments: I recently had to replace my PS/2 KVM with a USB KVM, and looked around for a KVM that would work with multimedia keyboards and multibutton mice. This is a true switching KVM. There is no device emulation which means no keyboard key sequences to change inputs. I have gladly given up that feature in order to support todays modern keyboards and mice. There is a couple of seconds delay betwen switching the USB devices, but they work just like they were attached directly to the computer - which is a very good thing. The device is kind of fuggly, but I have it mounted under my desk. The only part of this KVM I don't like is that there is only one button to switch between inputs. I have seen another version of this KVM switch produced by another manufacturer which has a select button for each input, but it doesn't include any cables or a power supply. I don't need the power supply, but the cables are actually quite good. I haven't noticed any ghosting on my 1280X1024 lcd monitor. The KVM is quite heavy and reminds one of being constructed of metal, but it is actually a heavy plastic. No problem here, since it performs the function I want it to do.

Comments: I purchased this to use my MX1000 and my scanner for all the computers in my office. The USB support worked right when I plugged it in, however you will need a regular PS2 keyboard in the first time for the OS to detect the USB devices.

Fabulous little workhorse.
Comments: This KVM does exactly what I need it to. I have a Mac Quadra 800, a Pismo PowerBook, a 12" PowerBook, and a Mac mini all hooked up to a 19" CRT, an Apple Pro keyboard, and a Kensington Expert Mouse and they all get along splendidly. I hooked the Expert Mouse through the peripheral sharing USB ports and it sends the special key presses through there just fine. The design looks a little stodgy (it's beiger than the picture lets on), but who cares if it works right? The included cables are a real plus, too. I recommend this for any user who actually wants to get work done instead of goggle at pretty lights all day.

Comments: I'm surprised at the number of good reviews. I'm regretting having purchased it.
* Take a look at the front panel. The front panel's plastic background is extrely poorly designed. The text is nearly unreadable due to size of the font used, the poor contrast with the background, and the shadow effect. The useless bubbles<font>-</font>-which OVERLAP the text!!!<font>-</font><font>-</font>-make it even worse. There should be big bold letters simply stating 1, 2, 3, and 4.
* The large switch button is not properly debounced. In other words, it can treat a single press like 2 or 3 presses, which causes the wrong computer to be <font>s</font>elected. It usually takes me a few tries to get it onto the one I want. I have two of these and they both do it. I've written firmware for pro-audio products and a debouncing problem would have caused a stop-ship.
* The best solution would provide a separate button for the CPU you want to <font>s</font>elect. The way this device is designed (poorly) when switching between only two CPUs, you have to always cycle (and watch carefully) several times to get back to the first one. This is where the debouncing problem can make things just that much more annoying.
* The device is obviously aware of which ports are in use, but it does not take this information to its advantage and avoid letting you <font>s</font>elect a CPU that is not in use. You always have to cycle through the ones that aren't even in use.
* Switching is annoyingly slow. I know that PS/2 based switchers are normally fast, and I don't have experience with another USB-based KVM, so it may be due to the OS taking too long to recognize the keyboard and mouse.

Comments: This device works fantastic between a Linux file server, a PowerMac G5, and a PowerBook G4. The additional USB ports on the switchbox allow you to add floating peripherals like a laser printer, thumbdrive, or hard drive. The extra devices auto configure each time you switch computers without a hitch. The only two downsides thus far switching requires manually hitting the button and requiring 76Hz or higher to avoid the creeping scroll line on my monitor.

Very, very nice
Comments: This KVM works very well. I have another PS/2 KVM from Iogear, and I bought this one because the other worked so well. I run my monitor at 1280x1024 and I cannot see any difference from when the monitor is directly connected.
As mentioned in prior reviews there is a delay before the keyboard and mouse will function when switching. While mildly annoying, the mouse and keyboard has always worked. I've never had to reboot just to get one or the other to work.
I use Linux and Windows 2000 machines with this. I found it works best to set the BIOS on each computer to control the keyboard (sometimes called legacy support).
I'm giving this 4 out of 5 stars because it only supports USB 1.1, not 2.0. Other than that, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Good investment
Comments: I've had this device for almost 2 years now. This was my first KVM switch and its been great with no problems. I didn't have to burn extra cash for another monitor, all I have to do is press a button on this box, and it will go to my next computer. The great part about this were the cables that came with it. I didn't need to get extra USB/VGA combo cables, its part of the deal with this box. Currently have two Win XP computers, and one Max OS X machine on the side. Downside: none so far. If I wanted something with a better case, then I would have built it myself. If I wanted USB 2.0, then I would have found something that supposts USB 2.0.
Conclusion: Good Investment if you want to use multiple machines without buying another monitor, and want usb devices (mouse/keyboards) instead of the PS2 connections.

Great product
Comments: I have had one of these for almost 4 years now and it still works as good as when I first got it. No problems with PC/Mac/Linux switching or any games on any of those. Only thing that would make it better is if the USB hub built in to it was USB2.0. Mine came with 2 short (about 3 foot) and 2 long (about 6 foot) cables. I didn't get it from NewEgg, but buy almost everything from them now anyway...

Comments: I've got this hooked up to 4 very different boxes: amd xp 1600 on nforce2 running winxp p4 2400 on i875 running Mandrake 9.2 p2 266 (OLD!!!) running OpenBSD 3.4 p3 533 running mandrake 10.0
All work flawlessly (I was very surprised about the p2-266, didn't expect it or OpenBSD to like the USB). For $100, this KVM is awesome. The only complaint would be a lack of USB2 support, I hope they come out with a version in the future that supports that. I still give this a 5 out of 5, since it does exactly what it's supposed to and it does it very well.

Excellent KVM
Comments: I picked this up, works perfectly with my Logitech Cordless MX Duo in windows (Linux is only tolerable, but then again, Linux couldn't really use the extra features before the way I had it setup), Runs desktop on both at 1280x1024 (on a Flat Panel 17"), and plays games at 1280x1024 (Final Fantasy XI), and 1280x960 (Morrowind) very well (good response times and refresh). It takes about 3-5 seconds for keyboard/mouse control to switch over to the computer when the switch button is toggled however, the monitor transition is less than a second.
And best of all, hard to find anywhere for this price, even without the good quality: IT COMES WITH CABLES

Comments: Excellent switchbox, nice heavy duty construction. Only flaws I didn't like is the plastic feet and the plastic hump on top. Both comes off very easily however. The plastic feel allow it to slide around the desk when pushing the buttons. Using it with a G4 Mac and PC with Win2K. Using the Mac keyboard and trackball with no problems at all! Would be nice to see USB 2.0 support however.

KVM for Wireless Desktop Elite
Comments: I had just purchased a Microsoft Wireless Desktop Elite to take advantage of the tilt-wheel. Unfortunately the old Belkin KVM I had did not support the extended features of the mouse. Went through a number of KVMs before I found this one. The GCS104U does a great job supporting all of the extended features of both the keyboard and the mouse. I have an XP and a Dell running 2000 and have no issues with the KVM. This KVM allows both boxes to detect the correct type of keyboard and mouse.

so easy I couldn't believe it
Comments: I just bought a new Dell laptop, which sadly has only USB, no PS/2 ports. I tried THREE different brands of PS/2 to USB converters, but all of them had various problems with various keyboards (not all the keys would work). SO I got frustrated and had to get rid of my PS/2 KVM switch in favor of this Iogear one, and get a new USB keyboard to go with it. It works like a charm, and it doesn't make a very annoying *BEEP* sound when I switch betweeen computers, like my old Belkin ps/2 kvm did. Note that two of the four cables you get with it are VERY short, like 3 feet, and the other two are about 5 or 6 feet. Didn't seem to need the power adapter, it works fine without it. No screen distortion at 1280x1024 @ 75 hz.

Comments: my only problem with this thing is that sometimes on certain games i play i cant get a higher res then 1024x768 at full screen, it just takes it to a box w/in my desktop. So sometimes i have to unplug the monitor cable and plug it directly into my pc to play some games. but other then that, this thing is great if you have more then 1 computer and a monitor that doesnt have dual inputs cause you neglected to think of that when buying one like me :)

Great Product
Comments: I have been through several other KVM's in the last two years. This usb solution is by far the best I have tried. Nice beefy case that can be stood up on end to save desk space with all the wires attaching from the back. Performs as Advertised. If you are thinking about this vs a Belkin product....My advise is steer clear of the Belkin KVM's I went through two expensive Belkin products in one year. All the cable are supplied and there is nothing else to buy.

Great KVM
Comments: tried other KVMs from different manufacturers and could not find one that had really good video. Was hestitant in getting this one, but now that I got this KVM I am impressed. No problems switching between other boxes. Running at 1024x768 100 Hertz on my main PC and can not even tell that I am running the switch. Only drawback is that there is no hotkey switching, so make sure the box is in a convenient place to hit the button and the fact that you have to go through all 4 ports even though you may only have 2 boxes running.

Great KVM!
Comments: Bought this over a year ago for $290. Wonderful KVM. Included cables are thick suckers, with little video loss, even at high resolutions. I've been extremely happy with this product and would recommend it to anyone... so long as you're not using a DVI LCD or with computers lacking USB ports...

Comments: Performs exactly as advertised. Unit is a little bulky however and the additional cables will add to the clutter. Still I don't think this deal can be beat - it includes all the necessary cables, no software required, 3 year warranty. I frequently switch between two computers, one runs WinXP and the other Linux. No problems with recognition on either machine. I'm using a ms office keyboard and intellimouse explorer 3.0a with this device.
