Rating + 5 Great cpu

Pros: Comming from a phenom 9600 with the tlb error....this baby smokes.. i wanted to go with i7-920 which is wicked fast...q9400 is right behind the i7 core.... i have it overclocked @ 3.4ghz which cuts through my apps games like hot butter...

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: i'm glad i bought it... newegg always rock...

Rating + 4 Expensive and almost worth the extra

Pros: 1. OC'd to 3.2 GHz full time and stays cool 36 to 41 on all four cores at idle with Artic Pro Cooling 7 Freezer
2. No issues or extra vcore needed for 3.5 Ghz but I keep it to 3.2 GHz for slightly cooler overclock temps

Cons: Expensive but needed it for video work. Won't go with Intel next time but will try AMD quad core for better value. For the price of this, I could have got a combo deal AM3 mobo and Phenom II X4 955 which OC's to 3.7 GHz very stable

Other Thoughts: Only editing DVD rez movies now but when I go HD I hope this CPU gives back on my investment!

Rating + 5 Handles everything!

Pros: It hardly slows down and when it does it's not due to the CPU (memory, harddrive, i/o, etc). Needed it to run virtual machines while doing other stuff, or render 3D while in photoshop. Needless to say it does the job! (make sure to set core affinity to only 2 cores for your 3d app process in task manager or other apps will slow down to molasses)

Cons: It doesn't render instantly in 3ds max.

Other Thoughts: Got it for half price, definitely a worthwhile upgrade from my E2180. Had it for 6 months and it's still purring along fine. Haven't tried overclocking it yet but there doesn't seem to be a need. If you run VM or two power hungry apps that each needs 2 cores, this is it! Still a much better deal than buying cpu/ram/mobo just to get the i5/7's.

Rating + 5 Very good CPU

Pros: I used this chip in my recently completed first build. I stepped up to this chip after my 7 year-old computer finally died. The speed and ease at which it handles multiple applications (excel, access, and web surfing) is impressive. I am using this chip paired with the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P mother board. Great combination!

Pros: Fast Smooth And not as hot a my lower watt 8400 2 core. And it does over clock very well and stable at 3.2Ghz. Ran Prime95 for over 24 hours for a burn in test and not one error and never got hotter then 61C. Running zelmen cooler.

Cons: Not a con but one core runs a lot hotter then the rest weird.

Other Thoughts: Just simply pleased.

Rating + 5 YARRR #2

Pros: -My games now do not drop below 60 FPS (which is great, since I use V-sync).

-Went from an E5200 to this. Everything improved in such a situation.

Cons: Runs a little bit hot, and the heat sink it comes with is absolutely pathetic. It uses the same HS that was on my E5200, and that idled around 55 deg, but I am using the Thermaltake DuOrb on this thing and it is idling around 30 deg.

Moral of the story, get an aftermarket heat sink

Other Thoughts: Nice little upgrade. I am happy with it and it moves the bottleneck in my system from the CPU to the GPUs, which I am planning to replace when the nVidia DX11s come out.

Pros: Switched from an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Amazing! Huge difference in load times and games run on avg about 30fps higher! Load times on games are almost non-existent!

Cons: Price! But hey, it's an Intel chip...

Other Thoughts: Newegg was much cheaper than anyplace else.

Pros: Made a big increase in my frame rates for FSX without even tweaking the game yet. I'm locked at 40 fps on ultra right now. If you're not ready to upgrade to the i7 yet, then this is a great choice to meet your needs!

Cons: None that I've found.

Other Thoughts: With the $2.99 rush processing option, I received this in the promised 3 day business shipping option. This is the 3rd order I've done from Newegg and wouldn't choose anyone else.

Rating + 5 Good buy for socket 775 owners

Pros: Bought this to replace my dual core E6300 I bought a couple years ago for my aging Gigabyte 965p-ds3 rev3.3 board. Overclocks pretty good. I have it currently running at 3.2Ghz at stock voltage. Passed a P95 12 hour run without issue. Idles around 27-30c and at full load 55-58c with my Tuniq 120 heatsink.

Cons: Temps are a bit warmer than I am accustomed to, but its a quad.

Other Thoughts: I believe this would achieve higher speeds on my board, but I am running cheap ddr2-800 that won't overclock well at all. Still think I need to reseat my heatsink and use better thermal paste and my temps would improve a bit. I discovered I was out of my arctic sliver and had to use some cheap thermal paste instead.

Pros: I love this chip. At first my computer wouldnt boot, I found out it was my psu. Installed a Corsair 850, N82E16817139009. Soon after I have it oc to 3.12 on stock voltages! on a cheap motherboard!

Cons: My motherboard is limiting this chips potential. I can't wait to get my EP45 UD3P!

Other Thoughts: Even if you are not ocing, this is a great chip.

Rating + 5 love this thing

Pros: Just got this thing for christmas and i love it already. OC'd tp 3ghz right away and its totally stable with the zalman 9700 i installed with it. will try to push it further but this is OK for now. running prime95 64bit right now to burn it in and im still able to multi-task. idles in high 20's full burn runs it at 44. overall this is a nice chip to get if you dont have the cash for an i7 build. a solid cpu worth its price.

Cons: none so far. will write another review once i've had it going non stop for a few months.

Other Thoughts: i love newegg. i got all my boxes 3 days after ordering everything. no damage to the items.

Rating + 5 amazing!

Pros: First off, AMAZING! Installed no problems. Running at factory clock right now, going to OC to 3.6 when I get new heatsink! Stock heatsink is keeping me idle at an average temp of 34 degrees(C)! Everest shows CPU temp at the low low 20's (so does my BIOS) but each individual core is in the low 30's in the sensor readings. Win7 rates this bad boy at 7.1!
GET THIS PROCESSOR!!

Cons: Doesn't sell my old processor for me.

Other Thoughts: Upgraded from E8400 to this. Best buy ever!

Rating + 5 Fantastic

Pros: While not my first choice (dragged my feet to long and they jacked the price of the 9550 up!), I have been absolutely satisfied with my 9400. I dropped the new CPU in to replace my E2180 dual core and after some chunking and grinding Windows said "Yo, you're good to go. Reboot?" and away we went.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Runs rock solid with the following components:

Rating + 5 Nice Quad

Pros: Love it. Runs at around 30c but have changed the heatsink to a Cooler Master Hyper N 520, I had to. The Intel cooler is a bit of a joke. It looks like a toy you can buy for the local .99 cent store. They seem to work but I wouldn’t use the stock cooler. Runs extremely smoothly and its fast. Using it on a workstation so I have no need to overclock it. Get it you will not be disappointed and the price isn’t bad.

Cons: The Intel cooler/heatsink.

Other Thoughts: The Intel cooler/heatsink must go. The box looked very small so I thought there is no cooler/heatsink included.

Pros: Quick, relatively cool for a quad. Doesn't break 60c and I'm using a very very bad heatsink/fan-- The stock one isn't compatible with my mobo.

Cons: Stock sink isn't compatible with my motherboard. Its an ASUS made specifically for HP. It has a screw in snik that comes with a "x" shaped support brace/bracket glued to the back of the mobo. Clips didn't fit. Didn't try to hard to remove the bracket though... it looked quit stuck.

Other Thoughts: a6400F (HP--blah)

Pros: Fast and cool running, what more would you want?

Cons: Intel still includes that useless cooler, a decent Cooler Master with a copper core will be much easier to install. They have the "X" base that installs beneath the motherboard, and the cooler screws in nicely. Mine runs at 26 degrees C.

Other Thoughts: Some complain about the price, but NewEgg has the lowest price I found on the web. This is a great CPU and a good value compared to other CPU's in this class. The only improvement, and more expensive, is the next class up with the lower power consumption.

Pros: The Q9400 is easy to install and as long as you leave it alone you do not have any problems, notas fast as I would have thought over the @66600. with a little extra power is ok.

Cons: I have bag storiess about overclocking. I just wanted to go to 2800, a small increase Forget if your ram goes to it 1.3337 ot locks up time after time. thats my only problem all the sunchine and I don't have a chance.

Rating + 3 Going back one generation was the solution!

Pros: I decided to use this processor for this second build because the P55/i5 combo I purchased at the end of October came with a corrupt bios. I figured, not ready for prime time, so I went with a p45 chipset combo and this cpu. So far so good, although I ordered another XFX 4770 and this one came doe out of the box.

Cons: It's a lot easier to mount this cpu versus the i5/i7 cpu. I'm using the new Noctua cooler with the revised mounting hardware. Newegg's price is $10 higher than the best 'net price, but it's nice to have everything in one box.

Other Thoughts: In the first kit, the bios on the Gigabyte p55 board was corrupt. In this kit the video card was doe. Newegg needs to tell their suppliers THEY'RE GOING TO PAY FOR RETURNS WHEN THE GEAR IS DOA TO THE CUSTOMER in my humble opinion.

Rating + 5 BLAZING fast

Pros: Wanted the new i7/i9 but mobo didn't support it. Settled for this and wow, very pleased. Huge step up from 2.2 dual core. Exceeds recommended system specs for all games I've seen to be released in '10.

Can encode video, produce in reason 4, and browse the internet at the same time with not only no lag, but at much faster speeds than my dual core.

Cons: None. Some people say higher clock speeds are more important for gaming than multiple cores. I'm running crysis at ultra settings with 2.6 ghz. Most of the games coming out will utilize multiple cores.

Other Thoughts: Great price for exceptional performance.

Rating + 5 Finally upgraded, and well worth it

Pros: * Great for video editors
* Great for 3D rendering
* Overclocks a fair amount

Cons: * None that's the processor's fault. My old Asus P5B motherboard could only handle Q6XXX series processors. Before that, my "Dual Core Ready!" Asus P5LD2 could only handle Pentium D processors and no Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad processors.

Thankfully, my P5B died and my boss replaced it with a Gigabyte EP45-UD3R, so I should be set for all LGA 775 processors ever made. Judging by the way Intel is going about the new set of processors with two different sockets (!?!?!?), it looks like we're in for the same deal in the future.

No problems with the Q9400!!!

Other Thoughts: I've been living off the lowest end Core 2 Duo in existence, the E4300 1.8 GHz for almost 2 1/2 years. I was looking to upgrade to Core i5 or Core i7, but that would involve getting a new motherboard (that probably wouldn't even accept the next iteration of Core i5/i7s anyway, knowing Intel's track record) and expensive DDR3 RAM. So, instead I saved a little over $300 by picking up the Q9400.

I constantly do a lot of video editing in Sony Vegas, and I've noticed that rendering times have been cut by 50-75%. Editing HD videos is also less of a chore now with less hangups.

I'm a beginner at overclocking, but I do have this processor running stable at 3.3 GHz, which is the equivalent of that Core i5 I had been looking at previously.

Core i5/i7 is going to have to wait for now. Considering that Intel has TWO brand new sockets out there in 1156 and 1366, I think I'll ride 775 just a little bit longer until I figure out just what the heck Intel is up to!

Pros: See thoughts.

Cons: See thoughts.

Other Thoughts: Dude, OC'd to 3.8 and booted, seemed to run moderately stable at 3.5 but just got too hot with the stock fan. High max temp is 71. I love my q9400, right now 3.2 on 1.28v(with vdroop) running well. BUY THIS CPU! Tuns out OC issue was the ram speeds.

Rating + 5 Luvin it!

Pros: Very fast and handles multiple games with ease after my friend overclocked it 3.2GHz. I can run these 3 games at the same time all very well at 1920x1080 resolution: World of Warcraft, Aion, and Warcraft III; but that would only lag due to my wireless connection. Typically I play a game and have around 5 windows/tabs from firefox open and no problems occur whatsoever doing this.
From what I saw, my friend overclocked it very easily and quick. It ran rather hot then (dont remember temp probably 40C) but now it's at a stable 33C-34C adding a $30 arctic cooler fan on it.

Cons: What cons?

Other Thoughts: Combine this processor with nvidia 9800GT 1gb OC, 4gb DDR2 Corsair, ASUS P5Q-E LGA 775 motherboard, Vista x64, and then you have yourself a gaming machine.

Rating + 4 encoding flies, and heats up

Pros: This processor flies. First of all, i upgraded my system from a Pentium D 925 to this processor. The pentium D, took an hour and 20 mins to encode a full 4.3gig movie. This guy, takes about 20 mins total! It also increased my frames per second in gaming to a steady 60fps with Antialiasing selected.

Cons: Temp wise...with the stock heat/sink and fan, it gets kind of toasty at a full load. Doesn't go past 50degrees celsius, but I am looking into an offmarket heatsink fan, because less heat on the processor, means more effeciency.

Other Thoughts: He isn't an I7 but he gets the job done. I did not get this here, but got it at a store for 60 dollars less. But if you can't find a good deal on a quad processor, this is definitly a good buy.

I have a gigabyte P35-DS3L Mother board, Processor Q9400, 8600gt vid card, OCZ 800Mhz 4 Gig Ram, and OCZ 700watt power supply.

Goog stuff, keep the good processors coming INTEL!!

Rating + 5 Plenty fast without overclocking.

Pros: Perfect for multitasking, rarely see above 35% CPU.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: I bought this CPU thinking I'd overclock it, but out of the box, it has plenty of performance for a high end media server. Just last night I was transcoding video, browsing the web, plaing back a multichannel DVD and using TurboLister to do bulk updates on a couple hundred listings, and the CPU wasn't even breaking a sweat. For those of you on the fence about E8400 vs. Q9400: don't let the slower clock speed fool you, this processor is almost 50% faster for only a few dollars more - it's a steal of a deal!

Pros: Blazing fast CPU. Overclocked to 3.2 right out of the box with stock volts on a Gigabyte EP45 Motherboard, took all of 2 minutes and this thing is smoking fast and very stable. Cores run between 45-50c under heavy load and 33-37 idle with a Arctic Freezer Pro.

I do alot of heavy audio work in Ableton Live and Pro Tools and this thing blows my old Dual Core 2.6 out of the water in terms of how many instrument/effects plugins I can run simultaneously. I'm sure the benefits are similar if you do graphic design/video editing and encoding as well.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Newegg is amazing as well, fast processing, shipping, easy RMA's. Wouldn't buy online anywhere else.

Pros: The Q9400 on the Passmark CPU comparision clocks just ahead of the Q6850 which sold for over $1000 a year ago. This is a lot of bang for the buck

Cons: None for my uses.

Other Thoughts: I have a Q6850 that overclocks very nicely and this CPU a year later is $800 less with nearly the same benchmark. I will use the Asus AI overclock for this CPU and see if I get the same results. I like this price range for a CPU and put more $ in a video card. My Q6850 was either overprices or I under utilize it's full capabilities. As I said, this is a great price for the power it produces.

Rating + 5 I'm a happy linux guy.

Pros: Excellent multiprocessing very impressed with sustained system responsiveness while doing almost anything. compiling from source is lightning fast, virtualization is amazing...

Cons: 95watts, with my 380watt powersupply I find this to be a little limiting, when I'm trying to use 4 hard drives + CDROM, I get graphics artifacts with my nvidia 9600gt (it has the extra 6pin power connector).

Other Thoughts: I'm running this bad boy, with ubuntu x86_64, and gentoo x86_64, I do music composition, and synth in Gentoo, and the Q9400 never gives me any problems, I love it.

The thermal sensors give you temperature readings for each core, and each core can speedstepped individually. my thermal readings are generally 38,30,30,30 Celsius.

Pros: This thing works great! It is very fast and it handles multi-tasking very well.

Cons: Runs a little hot on the stock cooler. Not sure if that's because I installed the heatsink wrong or not.

Other Thoughts: I can't say how it overclocks because I haven't tried yet. My board (ECS P45T-A) doesn't have the best OC abilities.

Pros: Awesome buy for the money. I just upgraded my entire PC. I saw this and built around it. I am running it with 4GB DDR 3 1600 Ram, 2 GTX 260 896MB NVidia SLI cards. Needless to say I can run anything at full throttle and have 45-60fps all day long. For the money, its worth not going to the 3.2Ghz.

Cons: It wasnt free.

Pros: Great processor here... i have mine OC'd any where from 2.8-3.0. I cant get it to 3.2 without my RAM becoming unstable. I havent had any real problems with it. it runs nice and cool. I ran a prime95 torture test using a Zalman 9500 somthing and it never passed 50C at stock voltages. thats plenty good enough for me. I game and edit videos alot and this is the perfect mix of speed and affordability for me. i love this thing.

Cons: doesnt iron my clothes

Other Thoughts: NZXT Blackline Lexa

Rating + 5 First time buying and building an entire computer

Pros: First time buying parts to build my gaming computer and I bought all the parts from Newegg. Everything was in order. It took me some time to review and put the parts together, but they all fit well and everything went well.

I love my PC and everything works perfectly fine together.

Cons: Can't say I have any complains about this. The instructions was kind of simple, but without words and just being pictures, I thought I was doing things incorrectly at times. I just went ahead and did what I thought was the same as the pictures. Definitely would have helped if there were wordings for instructions.

Also, the heating paste wasn't mentioned that it would be at the bottom of the fan. Not a con, but for a first time computer builder, I didn't know where it would be (I smeared a little on my thumb and that's how I found out about it). I only know about it because of it being mentioned on the Mobo instructions, which seems to not make sense since it should be on the CPU.

Other Thoughts: Knowing computers have helped me, but even then, I still had instructions with me helping me along the way. If it's your first time putting computer parts together and you are going to follow instructions, give yourself plenty of time and don't rush it. You could mess something up.

Rating + 5 Very nice processor

Pros: Pretty fast and easy to overclock. Stock speed is good and seems plenty fast for most everything. Stock cooler keeps the processor pretty cool with mild OC. I have it clocked to Q9550 speed. Better L2 cache than the q8400.

Cons: Only an 8 x multiplier. Some say the stock heatsink, but it does have a copper base and mine works fine so far with very little noise.

Other Thoughts: This is a really fast processor. W7 windows index scores this as a 7.3. Not too bad. To all those giving the stock cooler a bad time. Let it go. Yes it is not the coolest, but it is not bad and the push pin thing is not hard if you take your time and do it right. it is not as simple as the AMD system I will grant you. Still the heatsink makes good contact and is quiet.

Cons: Not a Core i7 processor...

Rating + 5 Excellent

Pros: Have this overclocked to 3.2ghz and running stable and cool for about a month or so. I have this coupled with a GTX 275 and I am seeing very high framerates with very high graphic settings in all the games I have played so far (fallout 3, fear, warhammer online, oblivion, bioshock, left 4 dead, and more). I can encode fraps videos very fast and well (And at 1680x1050). Overall I am very pleased with the performance of this processor.

Cons: Well, at the price I had paid for it, if I had waited a bit longer I could have got a chip with double the L2 cache, but that's just how the computer industry works, and regardless I am still very pleased with my 6 megs of L2. :)

Other Thoughts: For those concerned about temps, I have a thermaltake v1 running at lowest speed with some artic silver, and a antec 900 case with all fans at lowest speeds. Right now (according to coretemp 0.99.4) the hottest core is at 30. While encoding videos I see it rise to the mid 40's. As far as gaming, it's hard to tell since they're all fullscreen :P I have my bios set to shut down the system if the temps reach 60 (the minimum setting in my gigabyte mobo) and I have never seen that happen. The hottest I have EVER seen was 50 while scanning for viruses, but that was only for a few moments.

Rating + 5 Helps in certain cases

Pros: Upgraded from E2180 @ 2.66GHz. It boots a bit faster now, and I get 4 buckets instead of 2 while rendering with Mental Ray in Max. TF2's fps jumped from 30's to 100's. I can finally devote 1 or 2 cores to VM without slowing down Windows 7. Photoshop CS4 seems to run a bit faster but still lags noticeably compared to CS3 on Win7 or CS4 on OSX.

Cons: No particular speedup during day to day tasks. Perhaps a bit faster when switching between tabs or applications after prolong neglect. No dramatic improvement unless playing 8 videos at the same time + a few youtubes without any hickhups is significant to you.

Other Thoughts: Got this new 50% off two months back from a good friend, so I figured it was worth the money and I can delay getting a whole new system by another 2 or 3 years. I'm running with an 8800GT 512MB, 6GB of DDR2-1066 in a 2x1gb + 2x2gb config, 1TB and 500GB Samsung hdd on Windows 7 and Ubuntu in VM.

If you're a penny pincher like me and got the lowest of the low duo cores two years ago and are waiting for a good time to upgrade, I would wait a bit longer unless you have some dire need to upgrade to a quadcore (such as paint while rendering, in which case you can devote 3 cores to the renderer by going into Task Manager and right click on the exe > Set Affinity and uncheck a core) or if you get a really good deal. If you're worried about power consumption, go get a Q9400s. Also you can lower the max speed in Windows 7 through the power management dialog.

Rating + 5 Excellent processor

Pros: Excellent heat dissipation, performance, and quality.

Cons: Price is steep when compared to a Core i7 now, particularly given the fact I've seen 920's for this price. The M/B and RAM for the x58 chipsets still make for a more expensive machine, though, so I've built 3 systems with this so far and been pleased with the results.

Other Thoughts: Work output with a Q9400 rig is nearly equal to a Core i7 920 setup; the delta is 20%. The i7 uses all 8 threads at an equal utilization percentage (85%), the Q9400 has the same number of physical cores (4), but no Hyperthreading, so 4 threads too.

Pros: Great for multitasking and runs Windows 7 RC1 64-bit like a champ. Consistently flies regardless of how many programs I have open. Has done a good job with the video processing tasks I've given it so far.

Virtualization support.

Cons: Never bothered to install the joke of a cooling system that came with it after reading reviews here and picking the thin up. Went with and Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro instead.

Rating + 5 Great Processor

Pros: This is a very nice multi-processing piece of 'power'. I went from an E7300 @ 2.66GHz to this one, and didn't think much of it... until I went to render in Maya. With the E7300, I could only batch render one scene at a time maxing out the processor. With this one, I can render three scenes simultaneously and still do other tasks! I was able to render two scenes and play Crysis on max settings at 45fps! This processor rules!

Cons: The "clip on" fan that comes with it is rather disappointing.

Other Thoughts: Fortunately, I was able to use the one from my E7300 which was installed with a retaining bracket and use the E7300 HSF, along with some OCZ Freeze thermal paste, and I'm running very cool at load. Max it's gotten with all the rendering and game playing is 40c on all cores!

Rating + 5 You would be better with e8400 because of cache disableing

Pros: Half the cache is cut, you can make this cpu as fast as the e8400, but you have to over clock, you will have to disable the Smart Fan Feature in the bios because the heat sink sucks, and you will need the extra air to blow onto the north bridge, clock fsb to 375, Run voltage at 1.35000, don't run it any harder no matter what cooler you are using you will sacrifice reliability.

Cons: they chopped the cache in half. but its not worth it to spend the extra money for the 12 meg cache version. so its this or the e8400, when they stop selling the e8400 they will probably keep this on and you will have to over clock to get the same performance as the e8400(3.0 ghz)

Other Thoughts: Intel is pushing you to i7 wether you want to go that way or not they are going to make sure you get i7 because of the massive development debt that has come about. the legacy products e8000x and the q9000x preform great but intel is cutting supplies and rasing prices... soon you will have no choice and to do a total re upgrade to i7, because e8000 or q9000 series will be priced too high or will be out of stock, and for all that you find sacred stay away from the q8200 its a total fail... do not waste your time/money/effort just to get let down and ripped off by intel.

Rating + 5 Cant Kill it

Pros: The processor runs like Intel built it, clean and fast. The multipliers are a little higher than the 9300 but those who overclock usually know that overclocking a quad dumps a ton of heat on your system. We use this in a media box to convert videos to HD and to do 3D work.

Cons: The heat from the processor can be a bit dull. and for some weird reason it will lag my BIOS but when i put a E7400 Dual in it the bios will load just fine.

Other Thoughts: If your building a media box I really recomend this or even the Q9550, if your over clocking just stick to a Dual for heat reasons because if you fry your Quad because of OCing then your warranty is down the hole

Pros: Q9400 is a solid quad-core CPU. Basically I pretty much don't have to worry about cpu-bound bottlenecks when multitasking.
Running a virtual machine or two doesn't hurt your productivity at all given you have enough RAM.
Beware, it's very likely that a quad-core CPU will not increase the speed of serial tasks from what you have.
As a side note, I get piece of mind getting protection from poorly written software going cuckoo hanging my machine.

Cons: With my cheap micro-ATX motherboard (ASUS P5N73AM), it is impossible to get this even slightly overclocked at all. The stock CPU FSB is 1333Mhz (333*4) and nforce 610 actually maxes out at 1333 (!).

Other Thoughts: My HDD is the only bottleneck now!

Pros: Quad Core CPU works as well as expected running 32-bit programming like Windows XP and Internet Explorer. It really shines when doing multiple tasks and video encoding. It still opens things just about as fast as a 3 Ghz processor single core, so expect the same kinda long wait time to load IE8. I got it for encoding, and I am very pleased with my purchase

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Flies through Video Encoding in no time, what did take me over 3 hours, now takes 40 mins. Love it. Ok its not as fast a I hope (you know, finish projects in 2 minutes or less, like an egg), but back to reality...it's fast and Intel is my new hero.

Pros: Boots, has Intel's VT

Cons: Computer goes into a reboot loop about an hour after running at about half full power running 4 folding at home processes on a VM restriced to use half the processor's power. After that it goes into a reboot loop.

The Heat sink is also just a pain to install. AMD's "latch" design is much better.

Rating + 5 Great CPU

Pros: - Fast!
- Good overclocker
- Runs cool

Cons: - Stock heat sink is awful, I didn't even bother with it and got an AF 7 instead

Other Thoughts: I upgraded to this from an E2160 that I had clocked at 3.0 Ghz... I saw a noticeable difference once I installed the Q9400. Windows booted faster, ran quicker, and both Crysis Warhead and World of Warcraft saw significant improvements.

This CPU is a pretty good overclocker. The highest I could get it to was 3.2 Ghz, though I have heard of people who got it much higher than that. Something in my system is probably limiting the OC.

System Spec:
Q9400 @ 3.2 Ghz
8 GB DDR2 800
ATI HD4870 512MB
Gigabyte P35-DS3L

Rating + 3 Wonderful!

Pros: This really does an amazing job on the power and load my computer can take.

Cons: Unfortunately, upgrading from the E6400 Core 2 Duo processor, I do not see a benefit great enough matching to what I payed for.

Other Thoughts: Although I do not see that great a difference, This processor definitely helps future proof my machine so when they do unleash full multi core games/programs that I will completely see the power of this thing.

Pros: Vista 64 is flying on this CPU. Load time is pretty good, OS and apps are very responsive. Switching between apps, games, browser and back is almost instant. After playing for few days at 2.66GHz (333x8), I overclocked it to (400x8=3.2GHz) and it runs very cold even with the supplied cooler.

The trick is actually in the CPU - it looks like it constantly monitors the load and when you don't need the extra power it runs at the lower multiplier (x6 instead of x8). So when I type these review in browser the CPU freq is 400x6=2.4Ghz. And when I run a game it's 400x8=3.2GHz. I think this is pretty smart!

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: After upgrade (q9400+Asus P5Q3) I compared the perf to my frend's new i7-920 and to be honest in the blind test I wouldn't know which one is q9400 and which one is i7 920.

Rating + 5 Great

Pros: Not *too* expensive.
Very fast, video converting is noticeable faster than my old E6600 dual core.

Cons: None for the chip itself, but the heat-sink/fan is a joke. I mean, literally, I laughed out loud when I saw it. The stock HSF on my old E6600 is a workhorse next to this flimsy plastic piece of crud. But, since I am not going to overclock (I crave stability), it is fine. But still. I laughed OUT LOUD. Looked around to see if I was on candid camera.

Rating + 5 Excellent Product

Pros: I have had this item up and running for a week now, and it is working fine. I was forced to use the stock heat sink/CPU cooler due to my other cooler not fitting the motherboard. This CPU idles at 68 to 70 degrees F and after running a very graphics-intensive game, temperature only climbs to 93 degrees F. I am really amazed. I haven't done any overclocking, yet and probably won't. This system runs fast enough for me, now.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This cpu has really met my expectations. I am a gamer and convert mini-dvs to dvd's so with 4 cores I should be able to do regular work along with the DVD authoring process, a process that in the past meant all I could do, just to keep my old Pentium 4 system from crashing.

Rating + 5 Great Quad

Pros: -Nice overclocking can be done with this Quad
-Stock speed is already not bad at all
-Excellent performance

Cons: -cache of 6mb while there's the q9550 with 12mb of cache (but the q9400 is way cheaper)
-comes with the cheap intel stock fan

Other Thoughts: Just as a start I tried to overclock this processor at 3,2ghz, it was done very easily! With my Coolit Domino A.L.C. i won't get processor temp higher 43-44°C in full load at 3,2 ghz
and the hottest core won't get past 49°C.

Rating + 5 So "cool"

Pros: This processor runs so cool! When I first got it and installed it, the bios had it running close to low 20s celsius @idle. Now that I OC'd to 3.44ghz it hovers around 29-31 celsius @idle. I haven't tested it under stress, but I'm sure it's not as hot as some other processors. Of course I'm not using the Intel heatsink and fan.

Cons: I haven't run across any problems so far.

Other Thoughts: Gigabyte EP45-UD3R motherboard
Freezer 7 Pro heatsink and fan
Arctic Silver Ceramique thermal compound

Pros: Fast and cool

Cons: Stock fan is not so good.

Other Thoughts: I've been an AMD guy ever since. This is my first Intel and I'm impressed! This thing runs like a champ and is so cool compared to my AMD. The only thing I didn't like was the stock fan it came with. Other than that I'm very happy!

Rating + 5 Fast & Runs cool!

Pros: Fast/ overclocks well on air/runs cool..Upgrade from Q6600, well worth the purchase.

Cons: Intel chips are great, as is the newer AMD AM3..with all this technology, but whoever designed the CPU fan mounting aspect of the intel chips needs to have their head examined. Horrid design, took more time to mount the fan than to build the entire system.

Other Thoughts: Q9400 Intel
GA-EP45-U3R
8 Gigs Kingston HyperX Ram (Recommended)
ATI HD 4870 1 Gig
500 G WD HD New Eggs fast service is quite frankly the best I have seen. Not one RMA in Years of ordering from them. Great Job !

Rating + 5 Awesome processor !

Pros: 45nm quad core processor, easy to overclock, runs cool, out performers AMD 940 clock to clock. OC to 3.0GHz without any voltage increase. Able to OC to 3.6 with minor voltage increase with EP45-UD3LR & DDR2 800. Currently at 3.0GHz 32C idle and 50C load in prime (in 29C room temp).

Cons: Stock cooler sucks. No one should use stock cooler if you want to overclock.

Other Thoughts: Intel Q9400 with Xigmatek S1283
Gigabyte EP45-UD3LR
4GB Patriot Viper DDR2 800MHz (4-4-4-12) @ 1000MHz (5-5-5-15)

Pros: Fairly good price for quad core. Intel. 64bit. Easily overclocked. Runs great with my current setup.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I didn't use the fan/heat sink combo the unit came with so I'm not sure how it would preform with it. Newegg rulz!

Rating + 5 I now have mine! Whoopie!!

Pros: So far I'm pleased with it. But then again, I just installed it. It only shut down once. So I upped the voltage and tried again. It's still running, but I'm hoping to see a significant difference in my daily usage. I'm not a gamer, so those performance criterias don't concern me. I just removed my E1200 which I had been running at 2.7GHz. It would be nice to get better performance than I have now at 3.08GHz. But time and adjustments will determine that.

Cons: As most everyone else says, "You must be crazy!

Other Thoughts: I develop software for Linux. And I'm hoping this processor will increase my productivity. So far, I see some performance gains here. For one thing, my temps are lower now that I don't have a dual-core working at full load. The lower performance levels may be due to my EVGA 730i motherboard. My current voltage is 1.35v. I need to check my settings and make sure I have the optimum options selected.

Rating + 5 Overclocking Beast

Pros: Have had this chip for about 7 months now and it has been in 2 motherboards with no problems. I have mine overclocked to 3.6ghz stable and I'm not done yet. Vcore is 1.36, fsb 450, ram running 1:1 900 mhz. Idle temps 29c, load temps prime95 68c, load temps intel burn test 73c. I'm using domino a.l.c. cpu cooler on medium fan speed( its an all in one water cooler for cpu). On high I get even better temps, but its too loud for me. Paired with gigabyte ga-ep45-ud3p(highly recommended) and g-skill 1066mhz ram running at 900mhz.

Cons: Prices seem a little high for last generation cpu.

Other Thoughts: Core i7 is not needed at this point. I have no reason to spend all the money on a core i7 system. All the games now really just use the graphics processor and little cpu. A good overclocked intel core 2 duo would run all current games perfectly. I can understand using core i7 for professional purposes but just your average home user I don't get it.
