BETTER THAN not bad
Pros: I bout this cpu about 3 years ago with a biostar board (via p4m chipset) when the prescot was first releast. still competes great against a my new build (am3 athlon 2 x2 on a gigabyte GA-MA78LM-S2 board)..
Cons: the over clocking potential sucks... That being said, iv had it at least 5-10% overclocked many times, for long periods of time, on an always on system.. still VERY reliable, in fact, im using it to write this reveiw.
Other Thoughts: worth the money but, should be cheaper

hot chip
Pros: its about the best upgrade you can find for a slot 478, with a 800fsb 1mb l2 cache, it runs pretty good, not bad for gaming either, however not the best.
Cons: this processor does run hot, at idle mine runs at 40ish, its also a single core, and i dont know if anyone else has had this problem but when i upgraded the chip from my 2.5ghz it delayed the computer boot time about 5 seconds, as in it takes 5 seconds from pressing power to get to the boot up screen, where as my 2.5 was instant. also, whats up with the packaging? it shows a pretty blue box on newegg but arrived in a tiny plastic container.
Other Thoughts: after having this for about 6 months ive come to a conclusion, i'm sick of single core processors, as of next month i will be upgrading my system to a dual or even quad core. slot 478 is outdated, rest in peace, you were good in your prime.

price still high after 3 year
Pros: it work
Cons: l2 cache should have been 2mb and hyperthreading should have been a dual core but keep dreaming
Other Thoughts: 478 mobo user, update to 775 & or am2+ mobo for faster & more efficiency energy result

used to have one (but retail) from newegg
Pros: It was a good CPU, but ofcorse I didn't get a DOA OEM version! lol But that was years ago, my have the cpus gotten better!
Cons: This is funny, I can't believe that they are still charging 80$ for one of these, take a look at the cpus now, AMD 2.6ghz quad core for 100$! Intel just has more of them and wants to get rid of them and ripp people off like mad. Also the fact that it is an oem is sh() b/c if it is a DOA (most will be because they don't care if it works anyway) (not newegg intel) Then you they wont give you another one b/c it is OEM. Buy a retail so they will honor the replacment/refund.
Other Thoughts: I started out building a system with a P4 3 ghz and sold the system on craigslist for 350$ and built an amd 3.1ghz dual core system with 4gigs ddr2 (800) and 500gig sata 2, 24x dvd burner for 400$ Now I have sold that system and built the Phenom 2 940 quad core (3ghz) 4gigs ddr2 1066, 500gig sata 2, 20x dvd rw, radeon 4670 1gb all for under 650!

Nice, not for gaming.
Pros: This is a great Processor, can do any simple task i ask it to do and is really fast for a P4.
Cons: This thing is......horrible for gaming. It can't multitask either. However it's not meant for either.
Other Thoughts: Don't buy this right now. You can get a duo core for 10 bucks more and it will come with a CPU cooler.

Does properly its job - good price quality ratio
Pros: Do not thing that CPU heat sink is the most silent on the market. Comparable to Manufacturer (fan received in CPU Retail box)
Cons: Noisy
Other Thoughts: Better than spending 60-80 $ for 1-2 year life (expected).

Do not worth the money spent
Pros: Intel product. Never received a defective part (even OEM) from that company...
Cons: I bought this CPU for replacement of my P4 2.4 GHz. Did not see noticeable improvement...You better to spend your money on a brand new actual CPU...
Other Thoughts: None

Nice Proc for the money
Pros: An inexpensive upgrade for any socket 478 PC.
Cons: It refuses to make me coffee in the morning
Other Thoughts: I got this to replace My old Northwoods (2.26ghz) This Prescott runs about 33C (91F) on idle in an air conditioned room, at night when the air is off it will reach 100F and barely hit 125F under full load. I still haven't been able to OC it but this is due to my lack of knowledge.
This is an awsome processor, if You need an upgrade for an aging socket 478 grab this.

Pros: This core is fast and it works in a Dell Dimension 4600. I was pleasantly surprise to see the Bios recognize the hyper threading. The original heat sink seems to be working fine for normal usage. I do not use this for gaming.
Cons: None so far.

Poor packing
Pros: A decent upgrade for a client from a older Celeron processor
Cons: Poor packing even for a OEM, I opened the shipping box and found the empty plastic case and the processor roaming around in the shipping box free. By the time I got it the box several of the pins were bent.
Other Thoughts: After straightening the pins everything works fine, but all this could have been avoided if the plastic case for the processor was taped shut.

WOW
Pros: FAST shipping, and better than fast, FREE shipping (free at the time i bought it that is) it's a cheap upgrade from my 2.0/512/400 Pentium 4 that i had in before i bought this chip. performance was a little sluggish at first untill the motherboard got use to the chip. now it FLIES. also while idling my chip is at 20-22 C. my 2.0 idled at 35-40 C
Cons: only con i can think of is it didnt come with any thermal paste.
Other Thoughts: why on earth would they use a 8x8x6 box to ship i tiny 1x1 inch chip?

Rock Solid Performer
Pros: Built system almost 4 years ago using this chip and it was the best decision I ever made. Have no idea why some reviewers say it runs hot. Room temp is 76 deg-F and chip temp is 80 deg-F. Used stock fan for build and never o'clocked, no need to-no problems.
Cons: Too pricey for technology this dated. But still worth every penney.
Other Thoughts: Processor lived through an Asus mobo meltdown and kept on keepin on. Running a Biostar P4M80-M4 mobo now and my next build will be another Biostar. Replaced fried Asus mobo and Biostar fired right up and has been running steady and solid ever since.

my apologies to newegg and reviewers
Pros: -
Cons: -
Other Thoughts: It seems that perhaps the first CPU they sent to me was working but I wouldn't know. After talking with tech support from Dell my motherboard only supports up to 533mhz FSB and this chip requires 800. If any one purchases a CPU make sure your motherboard supports the FSB and voltage (if applicable). My apologies to Newegg for the trouble.

doa 2x
Pros: Easy to install.
Cons: Doa on first shipment, and after RMA. No refund (so I may have to eat this). I wish Newegg would offer a return on this because I feel ripped off on buying an old and expensive CPU that is dead on receipt.
Other Thoughts: Shipping and RMA are easy and fast.

7 Years and still cooking!!
Pros: It's been going for 7 years in the same rig! I don't think much more needs to be said. I don't OC anything I build so it will last longer. I wouldn't recommend OC'ing this chip though, runs hot enough!
Cons: Does run hot, so buy an after market cooler!!! I'm running a Coolermaster Hyper 48 with a 92mm Vantec Tornado on it at 3/4 throttle while gaming. Temps before fan upgrade according to SpeedFan 161F, now with fan upgrade 130F while running UT2k4, server, Ventrilo, ventrilo server, windows media player, speedfan, and EVGA Precision.
Other Thoughts: ABIT IC7-Max3, Corsair memory, Areo 750w PSU, 500GB Samsung, eVGA 6800 AGP card, 3X80mm Vantec Tornados in case, 1X92mm on Hyper 48 cooler. Fans hooked to controller, LOUD WITHOUT ONE!!
Started getting new system components together to build next rig. Basing it on ASUS Rampage extreme!! This one will be removed from case, cleaned up, then installed in a yellow Wavemaster with Bumble Bee decals for my 6 year old son!! Should be fine for another few years, then he gets my latest rig and I build new!

Pros: Great processor, works fine.
Cons: Can run hot, high price because of availability (I assume)
Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace a 3.2 ghz that had burned out. Was unable to find one so I had to step down a notch.

Final upgrade for an aging machine
Pros: Better hyper-threading than the older Northwoods, SSE3, somewhat improved performance and architecture over the older 478s. Significant improvement over a Celeron D @ 2.66 GHz.
These things still run Windows and most modern games adequately, but a vastly superior Pentium Dual-core (Wolfdale) or Athlon X2 can be had for the same price.
Cons: Not always faster than the older Northwoods, not capable of x86-64 computing, extremely outdated.
Some people used to have overheating issues with these, but mine runs fine on a Celeron D stock cooler (I do have excellent case airflow).
Other Thoughts: Back in the day, this was the best socket 478 around, excepting the 3.2/3.4 GHz versions or EEs (Not really much better...useless L3 cache...). This will OC to just above 4 GHz on air if you know what you're doing.
If you're building a new system, go with core i7/DDR3. You should only ever order this proc if you happen to have a good ol' 478 system laying around.

P4/3.0EGHz 800M 478P/1MB HT
Pros: A modest end to an obnoxiously defective line of Intel chips. In the days we first bought them, these were listed in a manner of importance you could easily understand like above. I have yet to see any immediate problems with this CPU so it definitely has some value. It is quite possibly the best transitioning chip I've ever bought. The idea was to use this, check out my options while I wait and then move to a 2x+ core AMD. It was also a far better alternative to the competitor chips available here at the time.
What sold me was the raw power this has. I can run many applications and games several times faster than I ever could on legacy equipment. HD videos are absolutely amazing. This chip's qualities alone really make a solid workstation. Still, if you don't have the right board for it you're going to hit a hard stop. These days you need to have the board now since finding a decent S478 is impossible. With this in mind, you can easily build something a LOT faster and cheaper.
Cons: 89W...Wait what?
Power Search and check no on 64-Bit. This is THE only chip in newegg stock without 64-Bit support! So if you're looking for an IA64 or something...Wrong place. That's really the only definite mark about this chip. These days it's a con since everything is 64-Bit. This is also a bit more expensive than the current market's low-end CPUs.
As far as HT goes, lets take a single core processor, keep several execution resources busy and market it with about 30% higher efficiency! Weeeee!
If there is any real advantage to simultaneous multithreading, I don't see it with this chip. Windows Server 2003 and VMware see 2 CPUs but it's really just a single core chip emulating a second instance. Why do this?
At 50 or 100% load, I can literally FEEL this chip pulling a LOT more power. Fan noise sounds lower, the rest of the system runs perfectly fine but temps skyrocket. For years I thought it was my poorly cooled Radeon 9200LE GPU doing this.
...
Nope. =/
Other Thoughts: I bought this chip in the Summer of 2004 as an all-purpose CPU. It's my reply to AMD's K6-2/350 that I had used far too long(It felt good). A recent addition of DDR500 in an ABit IS7 reminded me of this item listing. I'm still using the Prescott. Every decent 32-Bit OS I've favored and every server application I've ever tried to run works great. Though I'm blind as to how hot this chip really gets for most people. BIOS always reports over 50°C while the Koolance Smartboard marks idle at 33°C. My half/full load temps are 40+ =/
ALL games and certain flash applications(NOT Youtube) cause my temps to skyrocket. I overclock for performance so the mark is 3.3 for me. Temps are still rediculous until I downclock to 2.7 or less. I would not recommend this chip. Just 5 years down the road and I'm ready to rebuild. Is it due to heat? Maybe. My board is out of storage options and I value capacity. I might retire this in some 2U case like an ARK that can stay toasty. I'll need a CPU cooler. =/

Definite difference
Pros: I have been using this processor for about three weeks now, and I cannot begin to tell you how much it has changed the speed of my computer. I've gone from being able to run simple flash games to stabilizing the laggy parts of MMORPGs I once was unable to play. This is a definitely great processor for Socket 478, and I believe it's one of the best available.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: If you really need a new processor for your Socket 478, this is the one you need!

478 socket CPU
Pros: Good choice for mid 2000 MB. My first computer build experience. I had some anxiety matching the old 478 socket fan/heatsink to this hot running Prescott CPU. The case and cpu temps are running normal at 70 F ambient. Load OS time is much faster than my 2.8 Northwood.
Cons: NA
Other Thoughts: To be determined how reliable this processor is in a small case with little air flow from one exhaust fan and a PowerColor X1950 Pro video card.

Great CPU
Pros: Great CPU, have owned since they first came out (in 2002-2003), and I am still using it today. Going to be upgrading soon. With the HT tech it acts like a 2nd core. I play online games such as battlefield 2, WOW, and some others and i have no issues whatsoever.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: The only thing that i have done for my system is upgraded my motherboard, case, ram and video card over the years (total of about $400 in upgrades over 6-7 years is not bad at all). I run windows XP and i have rarely seen this cpu over 50% without a virus present. While just doing applications and normal stuff stay well under 10% usage and while gaming and having a bit torrent running it stays under 20%.

Good upgrade
Pros: Faster than the celeron that was in the box. Good guess (see below)
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: Wasn't sure if this processor would work properly on my motherboard. Intel says some will, some won't. Took a chance. Popped this one in and booted up, no problem. System recognised it for what it is and windoze acts rather well.

Excellent Value Upgrade for Older Systems
Pros: Upgrade from 2.66GHz/512Mb/533MHz Northwood P4 to this along w/ an added 2 Gigs of Kingston ValueRAM has yielded a (slightly) noticeable difference both in gaming & just general multi-tasking...which is saying a lot for such a simple upgrade. Installation was very simple & straightforward.
Cons: Prescott core does run a little hotter than the previous Northwood core...however, this is very easily manageable w/ an upgraded CPU fan/case intake fans & a high-quality thermal compound such as Artic Silver 5. Also, although my system (HP d530 SFF) mainboard was designed to take advantage of the Hyper-threading, larger L2 cache & higher rate FSB, the microcode update for the new processor's core stepping was not installed, nor was there an installation disk included w/ the processor, which caused an error during boot & made all the case fans wig out & go full-bore & sound like an aircraft taking off...however, it was very simple to acquire the required update from HP's support site.
Other Thoughts: As w/ all new pc parts, just make sure it's compatible w/ what you're upgrading or you'll be out a pretty good chunk of change for return shipping...especially if you're on a tight budget.

keep it simple
Pros: cheap and good for starter computer builder before the dual core begin

not bad
Pros: Bought this CPU in 2003 never had any problems with it. Long lasting, fast, tough. Still use it today and it as good as dual core CPU's
Cons: Runs very hot at times on 59-65c.
Other Thoughts: Love it. But.. it's getting old. have to change it soon.

Very Nice Item
Pros: I bought this P4 to be able to test and publish reviews of older Biostar socket 478 motherboards. Boy was I surprised! The systems are snappy and very responsive as the Hyper-Threading Technology creates a virtual 2nd core. In a word, I'm IMPRESSED!
Cons: None really. I just wish Intel was pushing for higher speeds on these parts!
Other Thoughts: This CPU coupled with a Biostar P4M900-M4(the only S478 boards available today) makes a awesome low cost system. It's just great that these parts are still available!

Noticably Improved
Pros: Noticeably improved my gameing fps and my regular using my computer. Able to watch HD movies now on youtube without it lagging
Cons: No manual just the processer but i guess if your switching it you probly know what your doing. It seems to crash more often but im sure its because i overclocked it to 3.48ghz and over clocked my video card
Other Thoughts: It took about 5 days to come and then i found out it was on the side of my desk the hole time :) so really it came in 2 days

Seems like a bait and switch to me
Pros: Works as specified
Cons: Based on the scratches on the CPU, I feel this was not an OEM but an open box or returned item. Have bought many products from Newegg before but this one just did not sit well with me and had to write this review. I just shelled our extra forty dollars for it.
Other Thoughts: 1 egg - for being cheated 5 eggs - for fast shipping and working product

Five Years & Still Alive & WEll
Pros: Yes, there are a lot of other "hot" processors out there; I just built an X58 iCore Nehalem DDR3 for my son to use for HD video encoding. But wanna guess what I still use for my own personal PC? Yup, this processor on an MSI 925XE board. Outdated? Think again. Intel hit a gold mine with their hyperthreaded P4s and my now 5-yr old workhorse, the Blue Goose, is perfect evidence. Did I mention hyperthreading?
Cons: For a new, complete build? Probably not with all that's out there now. For updating a 478 board? You bet. Hot? Yeah, it runs a little warm but I've run mine for five years, virtually every day, often round the clock, with a stock heatsink and fan. Reliability? Look at my review here, and the myriad others.
Other Thoughts: Did I mention hyperthreading? Did you know that hyperthreading has been missing since the P4s? All those glitzy duals & quads? Nope, no hyperthreading. Wanna know when/how it came back? Yep, just recently, in the new Intel iCores, e.g., the Nehalems. Did I mention that Intel and Newegg rule?

wrong part
Pros: fast delevery
Cons: wrong part
Other Thoughts: spoke with tech, he told me that this was the part I needed. However when I received this processor, it was not the correct part.

Reliable
Pros: These CPU's run very well, and I've had this specific one running in a HTPC for nearly 2 years
Cons: Hot, heat is not your freind, keep a good quality cooler on this puppy.
Other Thoughts: Should have purchased a Core 2 CPU and motherboard instead, this is an end of the line for socket 478.

Lasted me this long...
Pros: Good for browsing and email Will last a while with a good HSF Hyperthreading makes a difference
Cons: Overpriced nowadays Does not work in the newer hardware Slow encoding speeds Not dual core
Other Thoughts: I bought a Dell Dimension 8800 back in February 2005 equiped with one of these, and it has lasted me since. I was a pretty serious gamer for most of this time, until i bought my 360, and it held up well. It was only until recently that i found out this chip had hyperthreading, so i enabled it and have seen a pretty substantial performance increase, but nothing close to the newer chips. I'm planning on buying a new comp (custom build, of course) and will get an E8400. But if you want something for a lower end comp, this is your chip.

2.8 Northwood to 3.0 Prescott
Pros: In spite of what i've read from some people, this is a significant upgrade for some games. WoW for one. This improved my lag situation trememdously.
Cons: Boot time really no different from my Northwood. Seems only slightly snappier around windows.
Other Thoughts: Overall performance of this chip does seem to be significantly better at handling games and other apps, compared to my 2.8 Northwood. I'd recommend it.
Runs about 47C under full load. I bought a Masscool cpu cooler to go with it.
Installed onto an old Soyo P4I875 Fire Dragon 2 MB.

Get a new machine already..
Pros: Last 478's around. Keep your place toasty. At least they don't cell Pentium D's anymore. Still about as much speed as anybody will really ever need.
Cons: Netburst sucks. Hot. Obsolete. Expensive compared to new chips. Performance on par with even the most modest Core chips running at nearly half the clock speed (according to Passmark) and even an Atom will beat it in certain apps.
Other Thoughts: Unless you really have no other choose, get a modern machine. These chips were thermally challenged when they were new and AMD was smoking the completion. I got rid of my Prescott just as soon as the Core 2's came out and never looked back.
Performance on par with even the most modest Core chips running at nearly half the clock speed (according to Passmark) and even an Atom will beat it in certain apps.

Great CPU
Pros: Best processor you can get now adays for a socket 478. Great FSB and it has HT.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: Upgraded from a 2.4 Ghz cpu with a 533 FSB to this and I could see a little difference. This is the best processor you can put in the old mobos with a socket 478.

Pros: Have to admit - I'm still using this chip. In the right situations, truth is, for typical non gaming, non video editing situations where multi cores or "warp speed" isn't needed, like web surfing and running office apps etc. it's hard to beat especially taking the price into account. 3 gig stock speed combined with hyperthreading still makes a reasonable rig for the non gaming type user - I probably have 20 builds around this chip so I can attest to it's value which speaks for itself because it's still out there! Amazing when you consider how long this chip has been on the market - too bad the 3.2's and 3.4's aren't still available - they were worth the extra money when single core was the only choice. This chip is still viable and with careful attention to cooling it can definitely be tweaked up - single core is single core - but for the situations I've described it's inexpensive and quick.
Cons: Even at stock speeds this chip can make heat so the cost of a decent cooler needs to be taken into account, even more so if overclocking is part of your recipe. Forget about the stock Intel cooler - probably couldn't find one anyway.
Other Thoughts: Getting tough to find a decent 478 board - lately I'm only finding the mini's on most of the major web sites - but, on the plus side, I've recently completed two builds for two different customers where I employed the MSI - which in those two situations "footed the bill". Actually I'm writing this review from the second of those two builds getting the rig ready. The mini Biostar is another 478 board I've used and still see out there - I won't get into motherboard details for a CPU review, but I recommend the MSI over the Biostar. Anyway, combine this chip with decent RAM, which is cheap, and a quick hard drive - like one of the Raptors - you'll end up with surprising performance. Here's a tip: refrain from running multiple scans and more than one game at a time and you'll be fine! Just kidding, every positive thing I've said is true but keep in mind it's only a single core, even so, it's one quick processor for the money.

Intel Pentium 43.0
Pros: It came in a package that was well constructed.
Cons: The pentium processor appeared used. There was old thermapaste on it. After carefully, removing my old prcoessor and installing the "new" pentium-4 prcocess, it did not work. I recheck to make sure it was re-position, i.e, the triangle in the corner was in the right place, it was snugged, etc., Still no go. I replaced the "new" pentium-r prcoessor with my "old" Celeron processor, and surprise it worked. I am soooo! disappointment with new egg. They wasted my time. Now, I have to call them, be put on hold, accidentally disconnected, pay for shipping and handling, etc. etc. Do not Buy any sensitive prcoessor New Egg. You are rolling a dice. Good luck.
Other Thoughts: Don't ever buy this processor from New Egg. It was an used processor that does not work. I wasted time, time, time, etc. Now I have to try to exchange and spend more time and time.

Excellent overclocker...
Pros: I bought one of these CPU's as an open box back in April of last year so was not able to show I bought it from NewEgg, but I have. Installed it onto a 7 year old Gigabyte motherboard that was previously running a 2.8 HT 512k/800FSB Northwood chip. I was O/Cing that chip at around 3.2 GHz.
With this Prescott processor, I am running it O/C at 3.6 GHz, and using a Katana/Scythe heat piped fan cooler. Previous chip had an Intel standard heatsink & fan.
This thing rocks, and the system still out performs new base systems I build, even now. Absolutely rock solid at the O/C, completely reliable chip. Heat is not bad, 35-45 Celsius. 30-50 is expected with these chips. You are nuts if you think it should be less than 40 fully loaded.
Cons: Have to purchase a heatsink/fan for this chip. I recommend something with a heat-piped base and a fairly large heatsink. I used a Scythe SCKTN-2000 100mm Sleeve "Katana 2" CPU Cooler. It is large, but effective.
Other Thoughts: Not bad, if you are trying to keep an older P4 system going. However the time for these chips have come and gone, and I plan to soon build myself a new system with an i7 most likely. I try to upgrade every 8 years, and this computer has reached the limits I wish to maintain.

P4 Upgrade
Pros: The 3.0GHz Prescott is a substantial upgrade from the older 1.7GHz Willamette for only a modest sum of cash, particularly by adding the inexpensive Rosewill RCX-Z200 cooler. Newegg is great for we Canucks who no longer have good access to older PC items at home due to a lack of inventory and/or overly inflated prices domestically.
Cons: So far, none. However, one must never assume that a generic socket 478 cooler will be sufficient for the Prescott because of the very high heat dissipation. Failure to take this precaution will shorten the processor life. Spend a couple of dollars (<$20) to be safe or spend a lot more to have some fun.

This is better?
Pros: well, it installed just fine and it works. That's all I can say for it.
Cons: Somehow, this managed to make Windows /slower/ than my old 2.5 GHz Celeron chip, despite being .5 GHz faster WITH HYPERTHREADING.
Other Thoughts: If this were an upgrade, I would have returned it for a refund, but it is a replacement for a busted chip.

It Works
Pros: Cheaper then a dual core 3000 Mhz for all your processing needs Hyper Threading technology, so, kinda like a dual core, Huh.
Cons: n/a
Other Thoughts: I am using this for my home server, which is actually running Server 2003 Enterprise. I needed to relpalce an AMD 1.25G Athlon 2000+, 512MB pc2700, on an Emachines MainBoard
I bought the Biostar MoBo as a combo deal. Along with 2GB DDR2667 the difference is amazing!!! From streaming media-->copying/transfering files in my LAN-->BitTorrent. This is the goods, for NoN-gamers like myself.

works like a charm
Pros: Works. OEM.
Cons: First it didn't work. But thats because I didn't update my mother boards bios. Needs a manual for novices.
Other Thoughts: Don't forget to put silver compound paste/greese on the cpu when installing. Unless you just want to destroy your CPU.

Great Chip!
Pros: Have had this cpu for over 2 years no problems. Stays very cool using a ThermalTake Big Typhoon 120mm w/ arctic silver ceramique paste 30-35c idle (depending on room temp) 45-50c heavy load (i.e. Oblivion 1920x1200 high settings). Contrary to what OC_Master said IMO this chip can be kept cool and is very good for gaming in socket 478 systems.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: To further credit is gaming purposes i recently replaced my Ati x850xt w/ Ati HD 3850 agp. Can now play Fallout 3 @ 1920x1200 med-hi settings avg 35-40 fps!

Preshot? Nah...
Pros: If you're looking to build a fast low budget system (like something that's going to be running XP SP3) this is the way to go.
Cons: She's a hot one. You need to make sure you have adequate cooling here, otherwise you'll run into trouble (see other thoughts).
Other Thoughts: I bought a Thermaltake TR2 M12 heatsink (80mm, 32.4 CFM @ 2500 RPM) to cool this beast, only to find that the TR2 M12 couldn't keep up. Running at 80% loads I was seeing CPU temps around 65*C, and idle temps around 51*C. I didn't even want to know how hot it would be under a 100% load.
I replaced the fan on the TR2 M12 with a Vantec TD8038H Tornado (80mm case fan, 84.1 CFM @ 5700 RPM), and my idle temp PLUMMETED to 28*C (room temp is 21*C). The Tornado runs a little on the loud side, so I got a Thermaltake Hardcano 12 SE Fan Controller.
The results?
Under a 100% load, 40.5*C with the fan running at 3300 RPM (Auto mode), 35*C with the fan running at 5700 RPM (Manual mode).
It doesn't take a lot of expensive equipment to keep this processor cooled, just a little planning and creativity.

Work perfect with my Dell Dimension 3000
Pros: It works perfectly with my old Dell 3000. It decreased half of computer star time.
Cons: I tested it with old dell, I found the CPU were still be the bottleneck of my computer. How it can be better, since this CPU is the best in the socket 478.
Other Thoughts: If dramaticlly system improvement expected, recommend to update the computer by buying a new computer.

GREAT P4 Processor
Pros: Running this in an older Soyo i875 Dragon Motherboard. Replaced the original P4 2.8GHz 512K cache processor that it came with. Runs GREAT in my system. Pushed the FSB up a bit so the processor is actually running at 3.76GHz. RAM is OCZ DDR PC4000 RAM (GREAT stuff!) running at 250MHz. Using a nice Thermaltake VA8003BWS case with the BIG 250mm fan on the side. Absolutely THE BEST CASE I have ever used (pricey, but worth it). Running with the stock Intel CPU fan that came with the original P4 processor and the CPU stays between 45'C and 50'C. The chassis stays between 28'C and 32'C.
Cons: No cons, other than get them while you can. Unfortunately they are slowly disappearing.
Other Thoughts: This is one of the BEST upgrades you can throw at an older 478 socket P4 system with a P4 running at less than 3.0GHz. It works in the majority older P4 motherboards. Peaple having heating problems....either you do not have the cooling fan properly mounted to the CPU (not enough thermal paste, paste thined in spots when mounting, uneven surface, etc.) or your case is not cooled properly. I have seen many of the chassis fans mounted improperly (pulling air in when they should be pushing it out or vice versa).

Very nice
Pros: Its is a very nice processor for a socket 478. My system was aging fast but this bad boy boost it up. I ordered a Ati HD 3850 wich will add even more power to my old pc.
Cons: None at all, am still running my older fan so hopefully i dont encounter any heat issues

great upgrade for older computer
Pros: This is a great value if your looking to upgrade an older computer, but not wanting to invest more money into purchasing a newer computer. The processor worked great with no issues at all.
Cons: none.
Other Thoughts: please note that prescott's do tend to run on the warm side so make sure your cooling system is good and running. might be a good idea to get a new one for the $25 or so if your upgrading an older machine. remember this item is OEM so it will not come with any of the items you would see in a retail package, its just the cpu.

Hot mama
Pros: It is the best 478 you can buy if you ask me. long life and high preformance. Overall the best chip i have ever seen in a 478.
Cons: Not really a con but they don't nickname it a "Preshott" for nothing.
I have owned four of these chips and each one was outstanding. One runs in my notebook, I'm running one in a desktop workstation, and "WAS" running one in another desktop. Unforntiatly it fried yesterday. Now i'm running a 1.8 northwood at 2.8 . talk about a change when you are use to all of that power it is hard to loose it.
Other Thoughts: I also had the original 3.0 prescott in my notebook die. I had a new one and it worked fine. That was a year ago and now I can tell the chip has seen some of it's final days.
Haha i should frame all of the chips that i have fired. So if you plan to buy this chip be sure your case is cool and you invest in a nice CPU cooler otherwise you WILL be sorry. And so will your wallet

Good, but hot
Pros: A very nice 478 pin CPU unit. Just a step below the 775's. good for a family computer or someone building a light performance build for a PGA 478 MB. anyone looking at prescotts should also take a look at the northwoods.
Cons: very HOT. if you don't keep it properly cooled you could run into some overheating issues, i don't recommend overclocking it either.
Other Thoughts: Just keep it cool. make sure you do not let the heat sink/fan collect dust as it will hinder their ability to work. so dont cheap out on a HS/fan and clean out your comp every once and a while and you shouldn't have a problem. northwood run a little cooler than Prescott apparently, but i have not tested this out myself yet.

Great CPU!
Pros: I upgraded from an old P4 2.67 CPU to this one and the difference is astounding. I got it to prevent my gfx card from bottlenecking and so far it has gotten the job done very nicely. I can definitely tell the difference in the speed, scans & defrags are faster, windows starts faster, everything is just flat out noticeably faster.
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: Paired it with some Arctic Silver 5 and I'm idling at 46C using my cheap aftermarket fan from the 2.67! Only 1C difference in temp from my 2.67! GET THIS!!

Straightening bent pins
Pros: I got this CPU and mistakenly I gave it to my friend to install it, I didn't realize he didn't know about the corner of the chip and then bent the pins, stupid!!! I looked up on the Internet and read an article about using a credit card to fix it, but it is too thick to really work. But at least I remembered the principal. The way I fixed it, getting sewing machine needle and a one sided razor blade. Use the sewing machine needle to go down the rows to pick up any pins that are completely laying down. Once they are up use a razor blade(it is thinner and stiffer than a credit card) to go up and down the rows to finish straightening the pins (98% done) the other 2% is be careful reinstalling. Lift the lever and jiggle it a little bit and push down take it back out if none of the pins are bent it will go in very easily this time.
Cons: Never hand a CPU to someone. It will not only ruin the CPU but it will cause hard feelings between friends, and they probably will not want to replace it. Make sure you do this after you stop shaking because the computer didn't boot up
Other Thoughts: I hope newegg places this in all of the CPU reviews because it is a very handy trick for all computer builders especially all the newer chips that are more expensive. And it may stop some of the RMA Keep the razor blade and the sewing needle in the same place you have your Arctic Silver.

Hot very hot , not for overclocking, not for gaming.
Pros: large l2 cache makes it fast (when it's not overheating, see cons)
Cons: runs tooo hot to even consider overclocking, unless you're into expensive liquid nitrogen stuff. needs a very large hs/f just to stay around 52c under full load (prime95) and it idled around 40c With No Overclock. not a bad chip with adequate cooling, as long as you don't plan to overclock. I give it 3 eggs, only because newegg has such great service performance wise it only deserves two eggs.
Other Thoughts: Wish Newegg had the 3.0ghz Northwood, as it's a much better chip. If they did, EVERY part that goes into the systems I build would come from Newegg. Great service, fast shipping, and good prices. I build a lot of socket 478 custom gaming rigs, and always use Northwood core cpus because of the aforementioned heat problem of the prescotts. Would also very much like to see the 3.2 and 3.4ghz Northwood core chips featured here. They're really overpriced elsewhere.
if you're into overclocking like I am, or you just don't want a big noisy fan, check out computergeeks.com they got a 3ghz NORTHWOOD for less money. (3.0ghz/512L2 cache/800fsb). Newegg is best most of the time, but in this case, spend your money on the northwood. you'll be glad you did. just a side note, I got my northwood from there, and it's oc'ed to 3.8ghz (thanks to a nice heatpipe cooler I got here on Newegg) temps are 34c idle, 46c running prime95.

Pros: being in a rush caused me to order this for a computer i was working on without taking into consideration how old the computer was. the pin grid configuration matched up but the motherboard didn't support 3ghz. i realized this right before it arrived and called newegg, they emailed me a return shipping label with no hassle. thank you newegg.
Cons: didn't use the processor...

What Next?
Pros: New Egg shipped it quick and I installed the same day to test and older system.
Cons: It crashed my install of Windows. After reinstalling Windows it worked fine.
Other Thoughts: Research your CPU before upgrading, although Windows will be Windows and most likely crash on you anyway.

ROCK SOLID CPU.
Pros: RELIABLE, FAIRLY FAST, LONG LIFE, 800MHZ FSB, 1MB L2 CACHE, PRESCOTT CORE.
Cons: STILL EXPENSIVE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS (SHOULD BE <$50 IMO), ONLY SINGLE CORE, KINDA HIGH POWER CONSUMPTION FOR ITS PERFORMANCE.
Other Thoughts: I BOUGHT THIS CHIP USED OVER TWO YEARS AGO (PREVIOUS OWNER USED IT FOR 18 MONTHS), THREW A $20 MASSCOOL CPU COOLER ON IT (THANKS NEWEGG!) AND IT HAS NEVER GIVEN ME ANY TROUBLE. I DONT OVERCLOCK IT, IT IS IN MY WIFES COMPUTER, IT SEES 2-3 HOURS DAILY USE WITH LOW TO MODERATE LOAD AND THE OCCASIONAL MARATHON RUN OF 12 HOURS OR MORE. STILL RUNS COOL AND QUIET, WILL PROBABLY OUTLIVE ME. IF YOU NEED TO REPLACE A S478 CPU, THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST VALUE.

Last 478 for '08
Pros: It's the only non refurb Socket 478 you'll find on the site. Lucky for us, it's a solid processor! Pleasant upgrade in my Media Center PC from 2.4. While I'm not OCing the thing, it does it's job for being a home theater brain. I've married it up to an old Shuttle XPC with the ICE heatpipe.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: For being the only Socket 478 on the site, it's a great buy and bargain to get a little more mileage out of your older mobos.

This Chip Is Gooood
Pros: THIS CPU is very good at running two applications at once,if oyu have a 478 mobo capable of running hyper treathred cpu than is great choice, when it arrived at my job finnaly whent home got all prep to install, whent online on my other PC to read some extra info about it cause i always do,then installed it my mobo recognisedit right away as HT AND ENABLED IT IN THE bios on it's own ask me to restart the system now or later press restart an voila.
Cons: none yet,like this cpu
Other Thoughts: I ran crysis to see if itr run better oh yeah response time is faster, fps are alot higher, call of duty 4 multi player higher fps too, by the way when you go to device manager and click +processors two will show up.

quality processor
Pros: worked on startup, faster than my celeron @ 2.4ghz
Cons: the container it was shipped in was a little weird. thought it would be broken or damaged.
Other Thoughts: excellent product for the money. It still works beautifully even after owning it for a year and a half

Fast and Stable
Pros: I don't know why people say this thing runs hot? Mine stays around 27-30* while sitting other times it goes up to 50* It was an easy install and had no problems getting the MOBO to recognize it.
Cons: For some odd reason i upgraded to this CPU and now CS:S won't work????

So far so good
Pros: I bought this CPU to upgrade my old 478 system so I would not have to spend a lot of money for a new one right now. I have read a great deal about this processor running hot or very hot. So far it has not gone above 40C, and that while running Command & Conquer 3. It usually idles at about 28-30C. My ATI x1650 video card runs almost twice as hot at about 45C. So far it has been stable and I have had no problems, although I do not intend on trying my luck at overclocking either, that's why dual core CPU's are faster so you don't have to overclock. I did take the time to look for a good heat sink and found that Thermaltake's TR2-M12 is a good heat sink since it is simply a big old hunk of pure copper. And that really takes the heat away. Also I do not keep my bedroom where the PC is hotter than 65 degrees which helps.
Cons: Noe to report so far, does exactly what I expected it to do.
Other Thoughts: I only hope that this CPU lives up to my expectations. And does not die on me in a month or so.

Pros: Put it in my Dell Dimension 3000 in place of a cheap Celeron. Worked immediately, I do not play games, but for office applications has dramatically increased speed. Startup time also increased from about 3 min to about 45 sec, convenient since I duel boot a lot between windows and Linux. Haven't had any overheating problems. No problems using this with the factory heat sink.
Cons: It wasn't free????
Other Thoughts: I had maxed out the RAM and still wasn't happy with the speed, this processor has provided exactly the boost that I was looking for. Much cheaper than getting a new dual core cpu and mo board.

Regrettably DOA
Pros: For a legacy system upgrade/refresh, this is a great deal. Matched up with a bunch of RAM, decent vid card, split page file on physical drives, and a clean O.S. this CPU is a champ performing mundane tasks.
Cons: DOA - In a rush build and had to deliver without it. Used a 2.6 P4 478 instead.
Other Thoughts: I have used this proc in other systems with much success, though this was the first 'OEM' I picked up.

Cons: Its a single core.

Works...
Pros: Chip works well with the socket 478 MSI board. It does have hyperthread and seems to run a little hot, but this is no big issue. There are better cooling systems that will cool this puppy down. The Rosewill unit works well withit, compared with the boxed CPU fan. all in all the cooling really depends on your tower and the write CFM rating. Over all this chip works well and is quick enough for what it was needed for.
Cons: No fan included (Small con not work ding the chip for though)
Other Thoughts: The packaging that it comes in is kinda .... Don't really have the best word to discribe it, BUT it did get here in one piece and no bent pins so i cannot complain. I have had no problems with newegg purchases and look forwarding to ordering more products from here in the future.

OEM Chip DOA
Pros: Order arrived on time...
Cons: CPU is DOA, doesn't even warm to the touch with power on the machine, machine doesn't work at all with it installed. Re-install 2.0GHz chip I was replacing and it works. RMA number issued for the chip. Total time in hand... Less than one hour.
Other Thoughts: With the RMA, I hope I can get one that will work. I know it's OEM stuff, but you would hope it will work. Can't fault newegg, they sell components, not test components.

For The Aged PC's
Pros: Does what it should, is a CPU single core at 3.0 ghz, has hyper threading, is over all a very decent cpu, if no a very old one.
Cons: None for what it should be.
Other Thoughts: It is what it is, if you still have a mobo using this cpu slot it's a decent power boost. Not much else to say.

ups & downs
Pros: has held up well. built this PC in fall '04, it still runs faster than many others i see. (1GB RAM helped a lot, up from 512)
Cons: the darn heat. got a termaltake HSF unit on it, and it still routinely runs around 65-70C, just surfing web (currently it says 73C, fan is at 3200RPM). playing GTA or otherwise maxing it out can bump the temp up to 75-80C. i RMA'd one of these guys actually, it'd occasionally spike up to 90C+. unreal.
Other Thoughts: well it seemed like a good deal at the time, and it was a good first computer to build. a learning experience for sure though. should've skipped over this whole architecture series from intel. it's lame that it runs so hot because i never felt comfortable OC'ing at all due to the already high heat.

Go Fast CPU
Pros: A zooming socket 478 & XP Pro, out runs the dual-core Vista machines with ease. Wish Intel would continue to build on this platform. HT Memory management is great
Cons: wish the price would drop?

Excellent CPU
Pros: Best 478 for the price/performance ratio. Easy to Overclock to 3.8Ghz Really noticed difference with my games HL2 Ep. 2, Bioshock from my 2.4
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: If you got a good 478 mobo in need of a CPU get this one and the HIS 3850 card.

Plain and Simple
Pros: switching from a 1.8 pentium 4, this was a dream come true, lightning fast loading times on windows vista ultimate with aero fully enabled, all my searches, explorers, browsers, applications, games, and so on, open / close / mess up and close- lightning fast, no matter what it may be, this processor gets it done
Cons: none what so ever. only now that ive tasted TRUE power, im looking to upgrade to a quad-core within the next month. but you can bet im keeping this thing around.
Other Thoughts: its worth it...

Pros: I needed a processor for an upgrade for a utility PC and got this for a Biostar P4M900M4 Socket 478 motherboard. Great price and running beautifully for over a month and a half. System running 2 gig of RAM and XP Pro.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: Already had a good CPU cooling fan for this, hence the Socket 478 processor and board. Great lower-priced system and FAST.

Good upgrade
Pros: Very good, cheap upgrade. Installed in an emachines t3985 in place of celeron d 2.93Ghz. also replaced ram and video card and everything runs alot smoother now.
Cons: none as of yet!
Other Thoughts: installed processor with arctic 5 silver paste and rosewill RCX-Z200 fan and heatsink, A-data PC3200 2Gb ram and Chaintech P-FX20 video card in stock Intel mobo. Made a HUGE difference. if you want to upgrade your old stuff this is the way! newegg still rocks!

Pros: I have been using this processor for a while...over a year and even though the technology is outdated it is still quite fast and incredibly efficient. The HyperThreading really improves it's functioning.

Last words...
Pros: Breathed life into my fathers aging 478 system. Outperforms his last chip, celeron 2.93ghz.
Cons: all of the clear technical aging.

Good and dependable
Pros: Have run this processor for 3 years now, and it is a great processor, very reliable and overall fast for its time.
Cons: runs hot .. 60C with stock CPU cooler, Changed out to an Ultra 478 Cpu cooler and ran hotter, going to reseat the factory heatsync with Arctic Silver. also wish it had 64bit support

End of the line for a bad architecture
Pros: Fast.
Cons: Hot, inefficient, almost zero OC potential (got it to ~3.12).
Other Thoughts: Bought as an upgrade to a 2.4GHz Northwood and it was a better-than-marginal improvement. Still not sure if it was worth it, given the price at the time.

I didn't do what Newegg suggested
Pros: This is an excellent CPU! runs great in a P4M900 M4 Biostar, Still work great so don't gets me wrong.
Cons: Newegg told me to check processor to make sure I installed and I didn't do it! My Bad!
Other Thoughts: I'm using two of them. It even said on the invoice to check the processor before install to make sure it was what I ordered but I didn't take their advice! I ran the numbers through after install, then downloaded the Intel processor identification utility and it showed that it was not an 3.0E gig but just the plain ole 3.0 prescott.
