Inexpensive server Processor
Pros: Very inexpensive server processor. Works with low end servers. Socket 775, quad core, great deal.
Cons: None I can think of.
Other Thoughts: Running this processer in a 1U server as a gateway router and minor web server.

Runs great
Pros: Fast, Reliable, affordable, efficient
Cons: higher power consumption compared to other Xeons.
Other Thoughts: I am using this chip in a HP 120 G5 server. I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V. I'm running 3 VMs. The server has 8GB of ram. This chip handles everything - no problems. I'm running ColdFusion, MS SQL 2008, and a XP VM. I have not had any bottlenecks. This is a great chip!

Indy 500
Pros: after setting the Mb Bios , this CPU has been running Like its at the Olympics , no sweat, Cool and havent skip a beat. With a tower case I purchase 12 yrs (Elite case. You dont throw away $350.00 cases) ago and a new 500w PS , and a new facelift, place in a closet , you dont even know its there. 5 fans + CPU fan keeps this CPU at 55-60 degrees . Circulation pulls cool from the low front, two top fans pulls the upper heat out.65 degrees+/_ 3
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: 64 cache? Recommend-Yes MS Home server to top it off!

Good chip, watch the heat
Pros: Good chip. Fast.
Cons: 105W, not 95W.
Other Thoughts: Most X3220s are 95W - not this one. If you have a normal heatsink, that is not much of a concern, but be careful in 1U servers.

Dell PowerEdge 840 CPU Upgrade
Pros: Upgraded the Dell PowerEdge 840 Intel Dual Core 3.0GHz to this Intel Xeon X3220 2.4GHZ Quad Core. Simply remove the existing CPU, clean off thermal paste, put in new CPU, apply thermal paste, and put everything back.
Intel Dual Core doesn't support VT, so 64-bit guests in VMware ESXi would not load.
Also comes with Intel heatsink (not needed in my case) and an Intel Xeon Inside sticker.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: VMware ESXi (hypervisor installed on external USB key) detected the new X3220 CPU without any issues in the Dell PowerEdge 840 with Perc 5i RAID 5 (4x250GB SATA) and 8GB RAM (4x2GB).

Great Clocker
Pros: Went from a Q6600 to this chip. Like night and day. Loved the old chip it was a clocker as well but when she went the newer 6600's couldn't clock for anything, so i went to this baby. Bought this chip about 4 months ago. after burning the chip in for about 400 hours i clocked her up to 3.4GHz stable with about 1.28vCore. I have run bench tests and have gotten this chip max stable around 3.7. However to preserve the life of this chip i keep her at 3.4. She is a great clocker none the less the last of the 65 behemoths, although i prefer the 65's over the newer 45's. at 3.4 im running about 58-60c under max load with OCCT. Chip is rock solid. Once you go with a server chip you will never go mainstream again
Cons: None: Just expanding on voltages. 1.28vCore remember to raise the cpu voltage from 1.20 to 1.25 it helps stabilize the chip, i think it acts like the HT link for AMD.
Other Thoughts: DFI Blood Iron, XigmaTec S1284, eVGA GTX 280 SSC, Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800@ 1127MHZ 5-5-5-15-2T, assorted Scynth case fans, CM RC 690 Case. Custom air mods.

Good Processor
Pros: This processor is very nice when running in a 1U server. With the passive cooling and the blower running at minimum speed (around 2000 RPM) the temp is only 33 at idle and 45 at full load.
Virtualization runs very nice and handles VMware server guests without flinching.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Not the cheapest processor but not the most expensive either, but it is definitely a quality piece of technology and well worth the money spent. I would strongly recommend this to everyone.

Fantastic
Pros: Just installed it and is running great. Currently running 450 MHz FSB X 7 mult = 3.15 GHz, 1.45 Vcpu on an old Zalman CNPS7700 I had lying around. 32 C idle, 58 C max load. I haven't tried to go higher, and probably won't. No compatibility problems noted so far w/ Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard. I did get the GO stepping.
Cons: No cons for the product. UPS shipping was horrible - ordered Dec 15th with "3 day guarantee". It just arrived Dec 29th. The excuse was the Seattle snow - but FedEx came by my house twice during the same time span.
Other Thoughts: Running 1:1 with 8 GB of the new G.Skill Pi-black @4-4-4-12 and 1.9 VDimm. Planning to use this as a home server w/ a 6 disk RAID 5 using the Intel MATRIX RAID controller. I'll may lower the clock once I get a feel for CPU load during heavy software RAID usage. This might have been overkill for my primary purpose. If so I'll do other things with it - tv tuner box etc.

Best processor of 2008.
Pros: This is hands down, the best processor you can buy right now as of August 12. I'm surprised there are so few reviews of this chip. Even though this chip is essentially the "same" as a Q6600, it is far better. Xeons have been known to be the highest quality chips that Intel makes, and are being offered at only a very small price premium over the consumer part. I received a G0 stepping model (the new one) from CA, and in minutes I had it running 800mhz above stock with only +.025v. Your mileage may vary, but it was also incredibly fast at it's stock speed. Runs cooler than it's mainstream counterpart too. Please do yourself a favor until the 45nm chips are on closeout and buy this chip.
Cons: Could not rate it a ten, can't put one in my laptop, and someday a long time from now I'm inevitably going to think it's slow.
Other Thoughts: Do yourself a favor, compare this to both the dual core xeons and the core 2 quads. You'll buy it. Tip: most boards with a P35 chipset or better with accept this chip with no modification at all, a bios flast at most. I'm running a Gigabyte EP35-DS3R motherboard v2.1 and even thought this was not on the CPU compatibility chart, I didn't need to make any modifications at all.

CPU is Great
Pros: This thing is fast, and worth the money. I upgraded from a AMD 3600X2 and there is a big noticeable improvement in video editing as well as responsiveness of the system. Worked fine in the P45 BIOSTAR TForce TP45HP motherboard I bought with this chip and no problems or blue screens in windows XP so far. Typing this review on the compter right now. Also, I got got the SLACT coded-G0 stepping with the x9 multiplier, shipped from HARRISBURG, PA....excellent.
Cons: Its not a Xeon X3360 2.83GHz or Core 2 Extreme QX9770 3.2GHz, but those were out of my price range for this build anyways. I think some reviewers complained about the heatsink that comes with the chip but I think the heat sink is more than enough for the CPU running stock, and its got a copper conductor core on the bottom to transfer heat into the fins which seems like a good design. Of course if you are going to overclock to 4.0GHZ+ you prob. will need something better, like water cooling or...liquid nitrogen.....that would be great!
Other Thoughts: This is my first Intel CPU in quite a while, I think the last one I bought was a Pentium 2 a few years back. I have gone with AMD for years but, I decided to go with this over the Phenom 9850 because of the 8mb of Cache and the following these chips have for use in video editing applications such as Adobe Premiere CS3. Windows XP install was really fast, plus you can run like 8 different applications at the same time and this thing doesn't even skip a beat. Shipping from newegg was fast as usual at 2days time and I was up and running. Its a good purchase, thanks again New Egg.

zippy, cool low power draw
Pros: Fast, runs cool, draws considerably less than 1A in an ASUS server with 2 SATA2 drives, even under load.
Cons: Includes massive heatsink/fan that won't fit in the 1U case, and isn't needed anyway. Such a waste.

Xeon X3220 GO stepping
Pros: The x3000 sequence Xeons are your no fuss processors that work with main stream 775 LGA socketed MB's with P35/680i (or better) north bridges.

No SSE4
Pros: Quad core Xeon at a good price
Cons: Does NOT support SSE4. See other thoughts.
Other Thoughts: I was about to order this prcoessor. because of its stated support for SSE4 since I work with video a lot. I decided to contact Intel first. The intel rep stated and confirmed via email that this processor doesn't offer SSE4 support. For those of you who hope for G0 stepping. The intel rep further told me that it depends on the distributor (newegg) to reuqest a particular stepping. Judging by the reviews, everyone has got the B3 stepped prcoessors so it's not unreasonable to asume that Newegg's present stock is all B3. Also, only the G0 version supports I/OAT, an important difference if you want to use this processor in a server environment.

support
Pros: To clear up misunderstands on compatibility. This pocessor will work on any motherboard with Intel EM64T.
Cons: It'll work ONLY with Intel EM64T motherboards
Other Thoughts: this is a workhorse processor that won't let u down. I own a few PCs with Xeon processors and NONE of them has failed yet even in a over heat situation. And many consumer mobos have EM64T so just because u got a incompatible mobo don't mark this down!

What can you say?
Pros: This processor is amazingly fast! I have this proc installed on a ASUS P5M2-E, which in my opinion is a entry level server board. Any OS flies with this proc! I have tried Ubuntu Server, Windows Server 2003/2008 and all 3 both fly!
Cons: None thus far.

Back in Xeon Town!
Pros: Xeon, 4 cores, overclockable
Cons: None thus far.
Other Thoughts: I had a problem getting this to work on Asus PK5-E, but it was athe biso setting for the SATA drives. I just came from an X2 5800+. I thought I would stick with AMD, but they are taking too long to get their act together. I wanted the 4 cores experience without bugs now! I was very skeptical coming back to Intel, but it is faster at video and it is smmoth.

Very Respectable
Pros: I am impressed that this chip will run 400fsb w/9x multi without any trouble at all. Gave me an additional 2000points in 3dmark06 with my 8800gt. Went from a Core2Duo 1.86@3.5ghz (500FSB) to this 2.4@3.6ghz 400FSB, 3dmark06 went from 13,300 to 15,500. Thats one budget card! 8800gt running @ 770-1800-2050.
Cons: Really, I don't have any...hmmm, well,it won't run past 440FSB on air and won't run for very long. But thats with a thermalright ultra. It will run 450FSB w/8x multi but I need a better northbridge cooler to hold the memory steady.
Other Thoughts: I did not purchase this proc myself from newegg, but rather I bought it off my boss who was building a server and planning to return it until he saw the restock fee and sold it to me instead.(otherwise I would have opted for a bit cheaper regular QuadCoreDuo). Still rocks.

Don't Listen to the guy with 2 eggs
Pros: This is a Q6600 in disguise. I don't own one, but I own a Q6600. These chips have a higher TDP, so should be able to take a little more beating, as well as potentially overclock better
Cons: NONE
Other Thoughts: "Somewhat faster VC8 C++ compiles when using GNU 'make -j4' than obtained with 3.4GHz Pentium D and 'make -j2'."
What an idiot. Don't use DDR2 533. You wonder why it didn't perform good- CAUSE YOU'RE CHOKING IT WITH THAT SLOW RAM!! The CPU has to be used more intensively, using its cache more when you're choking it with that RAM, hence the higher CPU utilization...

Not Impressed
Pros: Somewhat faster VC8 C++ compiles when using GNU 'make -j4' than obtained with 3.4GHz Pentium D and 'make -j2'.
Cons: Runs very hot, 50-70C. Included CPU fan has cheapest, lousiest design I've ever seen--plastic expansion fasteners held in place by friction. Terrible performance for memory intensive multi-threaded commercial applications--dual-core 2.4GHz Athlon 4800+ runs same application at 50% utilization versus 70% utilization for X3220! Even the 3.4GHz Pentium D it replaced runs better. Unreliable, constant crashes.
Other Thoughts: Mainboard is Tyan Toledo i3010W S5197. 2GB Kingston DDR2 533MHz RAM.

Pros: Put this XEON in a Gigabyte P35-DS4 board, and everything seems to be working well, but have not had a lot of time to stress it. See other thoughts...
Cons: none yet...
Other Thoughts: Gigabyte tells me though, that it is not compatible with the board, something about Vcore different from the desktop quads. So, I set Vcore manually to 1.2V. I really wonder if this thing is any different from the desktop quads, as the CPUID is identical, and I thought that may be how the BIOS identifies the chip.

Good CPU but watch compatibility!
Pros: This is a very good processor for the money. It also overclocks well.
Cons: None for it's stated purpose as a server processor. See the "Other Thoughts" section.
Other Thoughts: I have an EVGA nForce 680i SLI 775 A1 motherboard with the latest BIOS update for the Kentsfield core. With this CPU installed, Windows XP Professional boots and runs OK, but important system processes randomly crash. For example, iexplorer.exe repeatedly crashes and restarts in both the 32 and 64-bit versions of Windows XP. When I replaced the Xeon X3220 with the desktop Q6600 processor, everything in Windows returned to working perfectly. I even reinstalled Windows from scratch with this CPU and got the same results: the X3220 has repeated system process crashes while the Q6600 has none.
EVGA’s technical support told me that their motherboard was compatible with the X3220. My experience indicates that there exists some type of incompatibility between the X3220 and my motherboard that EVGA is not aware of. My advice would be to stick with the Q6600 for the desktop motherboards and use the X3220 with a server motherboard.

Best Quad CPU
Pros: This is the besit for the buck of Quad CPUs. The desktop bunch don't measure up. Setting a CPU affinity on a Multiprocessor aware is best for mail etc on 1 cpu and others for dedicated graphics, gaming etc. Use VMware or XEN and run both Linux and Windows at same time. This is more like a mainframe than a desktop with the hardware assist for multi-processor systems
Cons: The selection of getting the better stepping is an issue. Other than a bit of a "warm chip" ,no problems.

Very Nice
Pros: I was also easily able to clock it at 3.0ghz. At idle cpu speeds I am running about 50 degrees, and at load about 70 which was a little warmer then i would like. I am using a themaltake V1 to cool it and am very impressed so far.
Cons: got a b3 stepping from the egg...not really that big of deal as i dont think that on air cooling i was going to get it to 3.6 ghz
Other Thoughts: WOW...I must have good timing i bought about a month ago and it is now $100 more then i paid.

Pros: Excellent processor that enables me to do a lot more processing than my core2duo. I overclocked it to 3.0ghz (333x9) without any issues at 1.325 vcore (ASUS P5B-E)
Cons: Well, I got the B3 stepping, that is the biggest con. This thing is hot as hot can get too. Zalman 9500 is NOT enough to cool this thing. 100% load at overclocked speeds is hitting 73c on each core.
Other Thoughts: I'm very pleased with the processor, but I truly was hoping for a G0. Surely it would run cooler, which providing my cooling solution, I would be able to overclock higher and not fry it.

Good cheap server
Pros: Cheap server grade processor. Match this cpu up with a good sever motherboard and ECC memory and you get a decent inexpensive node. Linux 64-bit works great. Very fast.
Cons: Price keeps changing. Up, then down, then up again.
Other Thoughts: Can't wait for the 3.0Ghz versions or HE versions.

great cpu
Pros: a little less expensive than q6600
Cons: still not as cheap as i would like
Other Thoughts: i have mine running on a asus p5b-e mobo at 3.4, 8x425, 1.425 vcore. stable as can be. b3 stepping bought here. i also have the x3210 cpu, great cpu, runs 3.2 at 1.4 vcore. you do need good cooling for overclocking tho. temps are pretty high at stock speeds on stock heatsink. i have my x3220 on water, idle temps are a bout 40c loads upper 50's. stock heatsink idle is about 50c on stock heatsink. quads make lots of heat.

YES IT DOES WORK in 965P-DS3
Pros: Better specs than Q6600 and cheaper! Higher Thermal Rating than Q6600 other than that basically the same.
Cons: I'm not aware of any MOBOs that support dual Kentsfields.
Other Thoughts: Some claim it won't work with the 965P-DS3. It absolutely DOES! If you can't get it to work with the 965P-DS3 Update your BIOS! Beware there are 2 versions of all Kentsfields the newer ones use GO stepping and higher thermal rating. The old ones use B3 stepping and a lower thermal rating. The new ones are the ones you want... Problem is they both have identical model #'s. The only way to tell visually is the CPUID.

G0
Pros: G0 vs B3 To the last person posting a review. Did you happen to note what stepping the CPU you got had? B3 or G0?
Core Stepping: G0 CPUID String: 06FBh Thermal Design Power: 100W Thermal Specification: 85°C Core Voltage: 1.100V-1.372V vs Core Stepping: B3 CPUID String: 06F7h Thermal Design Power: 105W Thermal Specification: 62.0°C Core Voltage: 1.100V-1.372V
Cons: see above
Other Thoughts: Want to order but want G0 stepping.

Sizzles in a PE 860
Pros: Drop in replacement on a PowerEdge 860 Type II model. Price is very reasonable considering the performance. Uses only an additional 1/10th amp (120V) more than a 3070.
Cons: No hyperthreading!
Other Thoughts: Performance matches the 30x0 series on a per-thread and GHz basis. That is, one thread on a 3060 (2.4GHz) will run about the same as one thread on the x3220 (2.4GHz). I hear Intel will release a 2.66GHz model this fall..

Compatible But NOT 100%
Pros: Great Chip (when used with the correct MOBO, Very Fast - BUT See Cons..........
Cons: This Xeon 3220 and other Desktop Core 2 Quads are NOT 100% interchangable. It simply has a 775 pin config - I have two Mobos one it works on and the other not. BE CAREFULL.... I know for a fact that it does NOT work with the GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Motherboard.
Other Thoughts: NewEgg needs to improve their response / handling of items shipped by not received - so called LOST Items.

What's not to like?
Pros: Drop in compatable with desktop Quads low voltage VERY good at multitasking OC's well Keeps running and running and running and..........
Cons: hmm...costs more than desktop version...ha
Other Thoughts: Tried to run this at 3G with default voltage. It just won't do it. but it will run at 320 bus with no problems. Load up your tray icons because this beast doesn't even know their there. ;)
