Legendary
Pros: For all the positive reasons so many educated reviewers below have indicated, this CPU is a legend in its own upgrade cycle (if that's a valid geek syntax).
Cons: OK, Sure.
Other Thoughts: Speed, stability, cool operating temps, great price and it's a 775. Got to love it.

Good server processor, hateful stock heatsink mounting
Pros: Excellent server processor. Very good speed with manageable power consumption. 6MB full speed L2. 1333MHz FSB. Virtualisation support.
Cons: The one gripe about any LGA775 OEM processor; the plastic that was used for the motherboard clips is awful. Far too soft, proned to deformation and stretching, and a generally horrid design making it very difficult to ensure whether things are properly clipped and anchored in place. More than once I was certain everything was on and then, when bolting the motherboard into the server chassis, I would hear a tell-tale *snap* and see the entire cooler sitting lopsided with one anchor dangling freely.
Other Thoughts: This is part of a somewhat basic fileserver I had purchased the parts off of Newegg for and assembled in February. For the role of a dedicated fileserver this is indeed excessive computing power, however this also means that there is plenty of room should other roles be added on to the system, which I find important in any system build that is not intended for limited use.

Awesome CPU's!
Pros: Intel Xeons are well known for their reliability and functionality! I am an avid AMD fan, but when it comes to servers, I stick with Xeon! I bought two of these for my current server build, and these are screaming fast! Coupled with 12GB of FAST ECC RAM and I am going good!!! Windows Server 2008 never ran so good!
Cons: The boxes came crushed!!! But the processors are in TIP top SHAPE! Not a problem. Also, the stock heatsink/Fans SUCK. I got after markets because before hand, I was getting 50c IDLE!!! Now with my aftermarket Zalmans, I get 33-40 idle! MUCH better. Only reason it gets 4 eggs.
Other Thoughts: Get an aftermarket heatsink/fan!!

E8400 in disguise
Pros: Great chip for a great price, runs in a P5QL-E with no issues. No need to O/C it, it's fast enough as is.... although I did have it up to 3.8 on air for a couple days. without an issue.
Cons: Not a con really, it is good to see a price drop near to the E8400 range.
Other Thoughts: Not a quad, but 95% of people who have quads never even come close to utilizing the extra cores. You want a good, cool running CPU with superior binning to the E8XXX series, this is it.

Great bang/$ and the xeon name
Pros: Great overall processor, to say the least. The value for the dollar is still great, despite being priced higher than the functionally equivalent e8400. I found I was able to use fairly low voltages to achieve my 24/7 overclock, keeping temps in range and also leaving headroom for experimentation later.
Details: E3110 4005mhz, 1.3v, 34c idle, 45c load (Realtemp, Orthos) Thermalright TRUE Black Push/Pull Maximus II Formula 4gb Mushkin eVCI DDR2-1066 Radeon 4850 CF Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB Corsair TX650 Oh yes, and the requisite Lian Li (PC-A17b)
Cons: None so far. The RAM is the factor "limiting" the OC at the moment.
Other Thoughts: I paid the extra $10-15 for the xeon name and lower operating voltages at stock. A "cool" factor, mostly.

The king of Price vs Performance
Pros: Just got an insane overclock, 4.2ghz, idles at 47C. Low power consumption considering it's power.
Cons: It's 10 dollars more than the E8400 right now. When I bought it it was $5 less than the desktop version. Go for a Quad for workstation use, they perform better. If you're just a normal power user or gamer this thing is perfect for you.
Other Thoughts: Lian Li PC-65B, EVGA 8800 Ultra, DFI P45-T2RS, Xigmatek RS1283, 2GB Crucial Ballistix Tracers.
Crysis on High - Feels good man.

An E8400 in different guise
Pros: Has been happily computing away underneath an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 since March with nary a complaint. At 3.5GHz, core temperatures hover barely over that of ambient. I can't fault this chip in any way, especially given the low power consumption of the 45nm die.
Cons: Absolutely none.
Other Thoughts: The E3110 is, for all intents and purposes, identical to the E8400 aside from branding.

6 months later
Pros: using it underclocked 1.12v at stock 3.0GHz just tried some overclocking and got it to 4.32GHz with 1.365v Paired with ocz vendetta(xigmatek 92mm) temps never vent over 59/61 during 3dmark06 (realtemp) mobo GB p35 (480fsb) passively cooled, no fans 8G Gskill 1000 ram (needed 2.2 to run above 1GHz)
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: with better cooling and mobo I'm sure it would hit some very high GHz
no complains here at all

I tried to buy
Pros: (1) "Xeon" -- I need a stud name to build a computer for my archtech. drawing (2) old "Xeon" -- I still have and use the old 478 model, so called dual CPU pair.
They still call it, "Xeon" from the beginning.
Cons: a useless stock fan ( I had to wait the heat sink style until I decide the case.)
Other Thoughts: I cannot find anything difference with E8400 except a sticker and the price.

follow-up
Pros: 4.05ghz at 1.2v and idling at 32c on air. Great overclocking CPU. In fact, it makes overclocking TOO Easy. best cpu ive owned. works in 775 motherboards, runs very cool.
Cons: poor quality stock heatsink. the CPU i got was a c0 stepping, rather than the better E0 stepping.

Happy
Pros: Bought Two, both work fine.
Cons: Xen virtualization in 64 bit using stock Debian "Amd64" kernels not working right out of the box.
Other Thoughts: I bought these specifically for doing virtualization, after reading the problems with AMD's processors in this area I went with Intel. Not disappointed, but must learn more!

nice processor
Pros: This processor runs cool enough with the stock fan. It also performs very well.
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: If you are looking at this Xeon you may want to consider the cheaper Core 2 Duo with similar specs.

Absolutely Amazing
Pros: Where to begin... It's basically a Xeon binned Core2Duo e8400, the main difference being voltage requirements.
I have yet to encounter a single problem with this. I'm also overclocking. It went straight to 3.6 without a voltage change, and was stable. At 3.6, I hit a roadblock, which was my DRAM:FSB ration, which I fixed.
I'm currently at 445x9.0. Yeah, 4.05ghz, on air. It's rock solid, and doesn't get too high. The highest it got was 73c, but that was at 1.3v, I'm now at 1.275v, and I may drop it more. It's idling at 34/37, and got up to 57/52 after an hour or two of Bioshock. This is on a $25 aftermarket cooler, too.
Absolutely amazing. I used to have a Phenom 9950 and RMA'd it because I didn't like it, and I got this. I am absolutely blown away. This is the best processor I've ever owned.
Cons: The same poor quality intel stock heatsink, except, this time, in a low profile edition!!!!
Other Thoughts: It WILL work on an LGA775 motherboard, for those who can't figure it out. Absolutely incredible.

E3110 = E8400
Pros: At the time I bought it it was cheaper then the E8400. I can overclock this processor so far to 4.1Ghz on air cooling, stock vcore.
Cons: None. This processor can go faster, but I'm limited by my ram and I don't want to buy new ram just see how fast this baby can scream.
Other Thoughts: Abit P5E, Gskill DDRII 800 4Gb, Core 2 Duo E3110, Xigmatek cooler.

Great Chip
Pros: Screams through Win2k3 and Ubuntu Server 8.04. 45nm process.
Cons: Doesn't cook my meals. Is perhaps indistinguishable from the (cheaper) E8400.
Other Thoughts: In all seriousness, this is a great chip (but then again it seems that the majority of CPUs are 5-egg rated). I'm not 100% that it was worth the extra $20 over the Core2 branded version, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. This was my first DIY, and the server runs like a charm.

Pros: Super fast. Runs my old Athlon 3200+ into the ground. Purchased for work (Video editing). Only thing that could've been better are a set up of dual quad cores. But I have car payments and such! I"m still rendering fast.
Cons: Intel Heatsink/fan pretty tame. 3rd party unit made the system a lot quieter and cooler.

Pros: fast and runs cool, good value. Would use it again.
Cons: Heatsink could be better. Mounting posts are engineered more for removal than installation I think. The two clips for holding excess wire from the fan do not help much with keeping the excess wire away from the fan blades.
Other Thoughts: The ASUS P5BV-C board that I used has the CPU_FAN connector positioned perfectly, which leaves me with 6 inches of wire to tie up with 2 small cable ties. Overall, it is better to have too long than too short a cable.

Odd OC experience
Pros: Good price/performance ratio stock, capable of good overclocks, runs cool.
Cons: I could only get mine to be 24/7 stable (Orthos) up to 3.33 GHz.
Other Thoughts: I could only get mine to be 24/7 stable (Orthos) up to 3.33 GHz. Bump it up even 5 MHz on the FSB (3.37 GHz), and it immediately drops to approximately 3 hours stable. However, I managed to get it to 4.23 GHz (9 x 470) before it finally refused to boot into Windows. I keep it at 3.33 GHz because I don't like getting the occasional BSOD (I was running it at 3.6 GHz, but I got about 1 BSOD a week).

Cons: Um I guess I got a bad one? The batch #813A651. Idle temps were 47c..my e6750 idles at 32c on TRU120E. CPU vcore would spike to 1.7v. yeah.

WOW! Great chip and clocker!!
Pros: Everything! Low voltages, temps, and amazing clocking abilities even with stock cooling! I have booted and benched at 3.94GHz using the stock cooler with minor vcore increase. I am ordering a TRUE soon to see how high I can get it... 4.2GHz is definitely within reach given the abilities with stock cooling is limited by temps @ 100% load. Worth every penny over an E8400 as this chip is leaps and bounds better!
Cons: The stock cooler wasn't a ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme haha chip is AMAZING no cons at all!!
Other Thoughts: CURRENT SETUP: Intel E3110 @ 3.6GHz 24/7, EVGA 780i A1, G.Skill 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2-1000, EVGA 8800GTS 512MB (G92), Corsair 1000HX, Western Digital 640GB SATA HDD, Logitech G15, Logitech MX510, 2x Samsung 20x DVD+/-RW, Cooler Master Stacker 830 Evolution

Get this if E8400 is out of stock
Pros: 3ghz, two cores, 6 megs cache, 45nm. Extremely fast and cool. Xeon brand name.
Cons: Equal to an E8400. Con? Yes, because it's 10 bucks more for the Xeon name. Xeon's typically get "Intel I/OAT" but this model doesn't have a motherboard chipset available for it. All the "Intel I/OAT" boards are 771 sockets.
Other Thoughts: Great chip anyway you put it. This will last you up until Naelhiem and then some. Also, if you would love to have a "Xeon" then this is the chip for you. If Intel really makes this different from the E8400 then it should last longer.

Very, very nice!
Pros: Managed an 11.871s 1M superpi score (checksum 9f6bf258), with some tweaking. I'm really impressed with the speed, and I see it every time when I work on other computers and get impatient. On pcpitstop.com, I am in the top 2% with this in an HTPC setup, using onboard graphics. Stable @ 9x400, allowing me to clock my memory to DDR2-960.
Cons: I get a false core reading with Core Temp .99. Right now, core#0 reads 36C and Core#1 reads 49C at idle. I RMA'ed the first one because I thought I had a bad core. This second one does the same thing. I haven't had any trouble under a load, so I just black out the second core temp since the first one seems to be an accurate reading.
Other Thoughts: Arthur Liberman says that I'm not the only one getting a false temp reading with a 45nm processor, so I'm not worried about it....now.
E3110, Asus P5E-VM HDMI mobo, 4 gb G-skill DDR2-1000, Seagate 500gb 32mb cache hard drive, Vista 32 bit Home Premium.

Great proc
Pros: Runs fast. Huge upgrade from my AMD 4400 x2 setup. CPU was severely bottlenecking my 8800GT. Everything runs so much faster now. First Intel processor in a long time. I won't be switching back to anything else any time soon.
Cons: Runs warm maybe? Different temp programs report different temps at the same time? Something to do with the temp sensors I've read.
Other Thoughts: It was simple to overclock this proc to 3.6ghz. I haven't tried any higher. Runs great and I don't need it to go any faster. No use in shortening the life of the proc if I don't have to, right? Also, I had a hard time overclocking the RAM, but I found it was because of the RAM configuration. My fault, not the motherboard (p5n-d) or the proc.

Pros: 3.0GHz processor running at 4.0GHz from day one - with stock cooler. Haven't even tried to push it yet - simply raised the FSB speed to 444MHZ (normally 333). Basically 25% free speed.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: This processor is essentially a E8400 with tighter voltage specs, so it is more likely to overclock better. MB is Gigabyte GA-EX38-DS4, which has great overclocking features.

Excellent CPU
Pros: High FSB at 1333 MHz, fast clock speed at 3.0 GHz, 6MB L2 cache, 45 nanometers...oh, and only $200! I bought this for a home file/web server build, and it's an awesome CPU for this use. It has the best processing power-to-price ratio of any chip on the market right now (except maybe the E8400, but this chip is just a rebranded E8400 anyway). I'm running it at stock settings with the stock cooler and it is COLD.
Cons: Not a quad core. Quads are typically better for server use, but for the price I'm not really complaining.
Other Thoughts: Be careful with motherboards. Most boards marked as 45nm-ready require a BIOS update to support it. In my experience you will need either a floppy drive or a spare non-45nm CPU in order to flash it, because boards without the update have lots and lots of problems. Windows will run extremely slowly and will fail to recognize most hardware devices (any USB device, CD/DVD drives, network adapters). Good luck flashing the BIOS through Windows using a 45nm chip. In one build I didn't have a floppy drive and I had to use a spare E6600 I had lying around, that made Windows run normally and I used a Windows flash utility. In this build I put a floppy drive in and did it the old-fashioned way. If you get a 45nm chip and have lots and lots of strange behavior, flash your BIOS to the most recent version.

Great CPU
Pros: This is a great little CPU, got it on an XFX MG-630i-7109 MB running at 1500Mhz FSB with stock cooler at it is running cool. Once I get a 3rd Party Cooler I can see this thing hit 3.8+ easily.
Cons: None that I have seen so far
Other Thoughts: Oh yea, the CPU is still running at stock Volt of 1.16 seeing how far I can OC it with stock Volt, hoping for 3.5 before having to up it.

Perfection.
Pros: Super Fast, Super Cheap, Super Cool, Super Energy Efficient, Works in any 45nm "Wolfdale" motherboard (All I had to do is find out which ones the E8400 worked fine in).
Perfect for a gaming rig or HTPC.
Intel's 45nm tech is really proving itself over AMD. I've used AMD for prior two builds.
It was available shipped for less than two Benjamins when it first came out.
Cons: Bought it when it just came out on people's speculation it WAS an E8400, which made me nervous. Had to buy elsewhere cause newegg didn't even have it listed then.
Other Thoughts: 45nm is finally here in spades. Get one.
For the $, I'd rather have two super cores than four mediocre cores. I just bumped my OCZ DDR2 1066 RAM down a notch (800mhz?), then upped the CPU FSB. My E3110 is @ 3.5GHZ and RAM @ 1000MHZ with 4-4-4-12 timings. Obviously I could go higher on CPU, but I like my RAM's tight timings and what difference would it make? Everything but Crysis is in triple digit FPS, but that's cause I only have one 8800 GTS.

4ghz yay!!!
Pros: Easily overclocked from stock speed to 4ghz @ 1.22 vcore.
Cons: Stock heatsink is junk. Replace it with a good aftermarket cooler if you want to overclock.
Other Thoughts: I have this cpu with an abit ip35p running 445 fsb. The vid is 1.075 on my particular cpu. Very pleased.

Perfect
Pros: The E3110 is the best much better than my old processor. this was a new build with a super micro P35 board. all in all the best processor i have owned.
Cons: Nothing
Other Thoughts: Did think the server board was going to work with it but it does.

strong performer
Pros: very quick, decent over clocker, runs extremely cool
Cons: requires extremely high voltage at overclocking roof
Other Thoughts: most people would prefer to run this at 4000mhz which i would suggest. my chip requires 1.410v at 4000mhz even. pushing past 4ghz is where this chip gets very voltage hungry. to jump up another mere 150mhz to 4.150ghz requires 1.448v which is what i run 24/7. each 8mhz increase from 4.15ghz on requires 0.02v which puts the practical roof about 4ghz even. i don't feel comfortable pushing it past 1.45v, even thats kind of high so 4.15ghz is where i run. will run 1m pi at 4.5ghz for mid 11s but it isnt truly stable that high. on the plus even at 4.15ghz, 1.448v it runs about 48*c with my ultra120x which is way cooler then to be expected.

Good value
Pros: This is a Wolfdale core which is the same as the E8400. Some say that the Xeons are sorted for better quality chips than the E8400. This chips is clock for clock more effcient than the previous Core 2 Duos (Conroe core).
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: I have built a system around this processor that has: eVga 780i motherboard, 8GB of 1066 DDR2 RAM, RAID 0+1, SLI 8800GTS (G92), Thermaright Ultra-120 Extreme, and Dual boot Vista 64 and Windows XP Home.

Runs cool
Pros: Excellent processor. Have it overclocked to 3.60 on air and using Coretemp in Antec 900 case and it hasn't gone over 30c. Using a Abit IP35 Pro MB and the uGuru says the temp is 255c but it is common knowledge uGuru core temp sensor is not even close to being accurate.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Everyone wants the E8400 but for $20 more you can have this processor without the problems that have been reported with the E8400. This processor has been overclocked to over 4.50 on air with no problems. I always buy from Newegg but it is hard to keep in stock so bought this out of Canada for the same price. Sorry Newegg!!

Temp sensor on one core is stuck
Pros: It's a good processor. It almost does what it should. It runs well at stock volts and is very easy to overclock.
Mine goes to just above 4.0Ghz on a decent board with good after-market cooling. Don't even think about the stock heatsink if you plan to overclock it.
Cons: Only two cons, but they are big ones, IMO. First, as a new product, it is definitely expensive. Second, and a truly big con is the "Stuck" heat sensor problem.
The heat sensor on one core for my E3110 is "stuck". It never budges from 70C no matter what the other one reads. This is a problem for CPU heatsinks whose fans are automatically controlled.
I suspect it may also affect the operation of the processor. That's speculation on my part - only the manufacturer would know for sure.
From what I've read on the Internet about the "Stuck Sensor Problem" it appears to me that someone else may have also experienced this same problem. As a result of that I've rated the processor "4" rather than "5". Other than that, it's okay. ;>)
Other Thoughts: Newegg was out of the E3110 when I purchased mine. I had to buy it elsewhere. Big mistake.
Although the heat sensor is stuck heat, the other retailer's return policy is no returns on CPUs. It would have been smarter to wait for Newegg to get it back in stock. :>(

Nice!
Pros: This is a nice alternative to the e8400, but just as hard to find in stock. This chip runs cooler than e8400, and to get the Xeon badge the silicon has to be better than the e8400. Essentially the Xeons can tolerate more than the 8400s, but it is something the average user will probably not notice. Like all Wolfdales, these things overclock easily; in fact you can get them over 4.0Ghz if you are willing to increase the voltage. I had mine stable on air, Artic Freezer 7, at 4.1Ghz with voltage at 1.40 on a Gigabyte P35 chipset board. Temps idle were 30c, full load 37-39c. But I backed it off to 3.6 since I couldn't notice the difference at 4.1. Also lowered the voltage to 1.25. Here idle temps were down to 27c and load 35c. Also you may have to increase FSB volts a bit to gain greater stability. And at stock 3.0 Ghz these chips are plenty fast, stable and cool running. Probably will work fine at stock speeds for all applications.
Cons: Almost impossible to find these as well as the 8400s. But if you search around the net, you can find OEMs for about $190, and retail for $220 or so.
Other Thoughts: I think the e3110s will run cooler and use less power, on average, than the e8400. But will the average user notice it? Probably not. But in theory the Xeons are supposed to be superior to the e8400 since they are meant for server applications. You will be very happy if you get one of these.

Best processor you can ever get
Pros: This processor absoluetely rocks !! Basically got it since i couldn't find 8400 and it was a bit cheaper (about 20$). As we all know this processor is an identicl twin of 8400 (just diff binning process). Runs supercool at 22C idle and abt 27C after 5-6 hours of intense gaming using Zalman 9500 though. At idle scenarios and low loads like surfing or word processing heatsink fan won't even kick in so that says how cool this baby runs. I am using P35 chipset and can got this to 3.6 GHz on air without any significant changes to voltage. You can go way above that if you guys wanna experiment some more. Personally i think 3 GHz is just fine for gaming as very few games (again read: Crysis) require more processing power than that.
Cons: Newegg still doesn't have it in stock and very few good places have it in stock. Just be careful about where you get this from. Got OEM version so only 1yr warranty. Some MB may require BIOS flash to recognize this processor.
Other Thoughts: If you are not gonna OC then stock cooler will be more than enough. My personal favourite has always been Zalman 9500 and it will keep this thing well under 30C in all conditions. All said if you are in market for a new dual core processor then xeon 3110 is the way to go (i would even go far enough to say over 8400 as xeons are cooler running chips).

Intel Xeon E3110 - Runs cool.
Pros: Overclocked and stable at 3.75GHz. Have run SETI for 3 days 24/7 with no stability issues. Zalman cooler is probably overkill. Have yet to see CPU exhibit temp higher than 34 C. (12 C over ambient.) Ran stable at 3.84GHz for a couple of hours on SETI, then bumped it up to 4.0 Ghz. At 4.0 Ghz it would post, but I received Kernel errors so dropped it down to 3.75GHz. Even at 3.85GHz, with Zalman 9700 there was no increase in operating temperature over stock HSF.
Cons: Flimsy stock Heat Sink/Fan - But this may not really matter. Not sure CPU core temp is accurate. I know it's running cool, but there are reports that this isn't accurate. I have no way to manually measure core temp though.
Other Thoughts: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) Intel Xeon E3110 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 @ 3.75GHz ZALMAN CNPS9700 LED 110mm Antec Nine Hundred ATX case PC Power & Cooling 750W Power Supply

great processor
Pros: great processing power at a very good price. if you cant find a E8400 this is the way to go.
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: although i didnt get this from newegg because they were out of stock when i ordered the rest of my hardware, i wanted to say that after dealing with a different merchant, i will wait for newegg next time. there is no comparison when it comes to neweggs service and shipping. dont know if im allowed to say this or not, but try to avoid tankguys.com as their shipping is slow as ive ever seen, the phone number they give is disconnected and the service is even worse. after 4 emails i finaly got a response from them and thats only because i told them i wanted a rma because after 10 days and my e3110 still wasnt delivered i was pretty mad. then they finaly emaild me back. THERE IS NO SERVICE THAT COMPARES TO NEWEGG.

Very Nice
Pros: It has the new 45 nm process, which means it has SSE4 which will benefit in near future multimedia apps, runs fairly cool. I have mine overclocked to 3.6 Ghz, 400 Mhz bus speed and 1600 FSB, with no voltage increase and 12 hours stable. It is the same as E8400 and cheaper than a 65nm counterpart. Oh and its really fast!
Cons: The stock heatsink is pretty bad, but that's a given. I dropped my temps 10 degrees using Arctic Cooler. DTS on one of the cores is stuck, but it is stuck at a low temp so its not a problem. Vista only gives mine a 5.8 score.
Other Thoughts: Make sure to check and make sure your motherboard supports 45nm. I have a feeling that the DTS issue is somehow related to overclocking because I had no issue with it until I oc'd. I'd also use Real Temp to check temperatures on this particular processor. I have had Xeons in other workstations, and they're just plain good processors.

Great Dual Core, E8400 Replacement
Pros: What a great dual core, upgraded from a Pentium 4 and the stellar performance of this CPU is immediately apparent. Fine tune overclock to 400FSB at 1.25625 voltage, with mushkin DDR2 800 at 1:1. No other voltage increase needed. Runs at ambient when idle and 42c load after 12 hours of prime95, completely stable. 45nm goodness.
Cons: Core temperatures are stuck. The DTS (Digital Thermal Sensors) of both cores is stuck at 56c. The core temperatures never-ever move, unless they exceed that temperature. Once maxed at 58c. But I don't know what the real time core temperatures are. Stuck at 56c. Will go up but will not go down. Some E8400 also have defective core sensors.
Other Thoughts: Bought from another Canadian website when the E8400 was out of stock on Newegg and so was the E3110. Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, GA-EX38-DS4, mushkin 2x2GB DDR2 800 CAS5, Cooler Master Real Power Pro 650W, EVGA 9600GT Superclocked, Thermaltake Armor. 3dmark06 @ 1280x1024 @ default no AA no AF = ~4900 SM3

The Xeon version of the E8400
Pros: Excellent thermal profile. Easily overclocks to 3.6 Ghz using a 400 Mhz FSB, on stock 1.2 voltage and stock heatsink/fan, which remains silent under load. Very low power consumption; entire system uses 98 watts idle, 160 watts full load (with 8800 GT OC, 4 GB RAM, GA-EP35-DS4, 3 HD).
Cons: Availability. After waiting for an E8400 to become available on NE for 3 weeks, I discovered the E3110 is the exactly same chip, only "binned" to a higher tolerance (for the Xeon branding). Unfortunately NE didn't carry these at the time so I had to get one elsewhere.

Great OC'er
Pros: Easy overclocker to break through 4ghz on air. Extremely high performance when paired with a good mobo, P35 chipset your best bet.
Cons: Hard to find, and you may need to flash your bios to get the chip recognized properly
Other Thoughts: Toss the stock cooler and grab any of the better Thermalright or Scythes..
Oc'ed mine to 4140mhz Orthos and 3dmark06 stable at 1.35volt
Wipes out almost any benchmark you can throw at it....
Realtemp is your best bet on temp monitoring right now.

So far, so good
Pros: Was available (and cheaper) when E8400 chips were nowhere to be found. Installed easily (first build) in my Gigabyte GA-EX38-DQ6 motherboard. Recognized by the MB, screaming fast so far.
Cons: The heatsink/fan unit took A LOT of pressure to install. As this was a first time build, it quite frankly scared the **** out of me. All ended well, though, and I am VERY happy.

Better than the E8400?
Pros: I am thrilled with this chip. As others said, I was a bit worried about it being less able than the E8400, but after reading up on it, it has the same specifications as the E8400 (Wolfdale - 45nm), but is tested more rigorously. Regardless if you get the 8400 or 3110, these are outstanding processors that can't be beat by most quads in practical applications.
Cons: Still not in stock at Newegg. I had to chase mine down elsewhere and it made me realize why I like newegg so much.
Other Thoughts: With very little effort, I have this thing running rock-solid stable at just over 4Ghz on air (Zalman 9700) and with very little voltage (1.3v). For some reason these take less voltage than the 8400, but seem to run a bit hotter. I am at low 30's at idle, but it gets in the high 50's on a full stress test after an hour.

Good E8400 alternative
Pros: Couldn't find an E8400. Found this Xeon E3110 is basically the same chip (newegg didn't have it listed at the time so I bought elsewhere). I am using a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P motherboard and it worked without any problems at all. Recognized as "Xeon E3110" with stock BIOS.
Cons: Some 775 motherboards will not recognize this CPU with stock BIOS. Do your research before buying a motherboard.
Other Thoughts: I'm not planning to overclock this at all, but wanted a low-power low-noise processor that had great performance. At the current time I think this is the best choice for my needs. 65W for the E3110/E8400 compared to 105W for the Q6600 and slightly outperforms the Q6600 on the majority of applications I'll be using.

Flawless
Pros: Works flawlessly on my abit IP35-E motherboard. Runs like a champ.
Cons: The fan was a pain to get on. Had to be really careful not to push too hard on the push screws or the fan would wind up off center on the CPU. The best way I found to do it was to turn all the screws to their "loose" position, put the fan on with some pressure on the fan itself and the screws, and then at the same time turn the screws to their "tight" position.
Other Thoughts: Read about the e3110 while trying to find an e8400 in stock. I was a little skeptical about it working on a desktop board but everyone seemed to have success with it. Add me to the success list.
Definitely better than waiting for the Wolfdales to come back in stock and cheaper to boot.

forget e8400
Pros: this proc is same as e8400 so look no further....oc-ing for dummies at 3.6 just by changing fsb to 400. If u actually understand oc than it can fly way over 4GHz on air. paired mine with ocz vendetta 92mm and its simmering 3.6GHz 27 idle and havent seen it over 37'C under full load.
Cons: not in stock here, got it elsewhere for a few bucks less
Other Thoughts: use it mainly for ubuntu 7.10 64-bit and multiple operating systems via vmware. hard to keep it at 100% load, lol! specs : antec sonata designer 500 (500W psu included), ocz vendetta cooler, 8Gigs of gskill 1000 (great ram), samsung 750G hdd, xfx 8600GT, gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L mobo.....great oc-er, server for under a grand. Ubuntu is very happy w/setup

Rocks the E8400
Pros: Good price for a XEON bin, 9x multiplier, works in desktop motherboards which support normal wolfdale 45nm cpu's. Overclocks like e8400 and maybe better at lower voltage.
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: This cpu is almost identical to the E8400. Guaranteed high quality because of the XEON brand.

Pros: Wow, this processor just plain FLIES. I installed this in a G33 board (nothing special) and with no effort it got a 17 second 1M superpi result... pretty impressive. Runs apps without breaking a sweat.
Cons: Isn't a quad core.

Excellent counterpart to e8400
Pros: This chip is incredibly easy to overclock and consumes less power. It is an open secret that this is identical to the e8400 for desktops. A good motherboard (like my p35) can work 3.6ghz on stock and 4.4ghz on air.
Cons: Intel seems to have dropped the ball on 45nm production or perhaps was too successful in creating demand. These Wolfdale chips are much better than the excellent Conroes they will replace- AND they are cheaper... theoretically.
Other Thoughts: Pricing at "sub-Egg" estabishments have skyrocketed, yet I chose to be overcharged then buy a e6750. The performance and OC abilities are spectacular.

Great CPU
Pros: I did not purchase this from Newegg since they did not even have a listing for it at the time. This CPU is awsome and Overclocks very well. I have mine currently at 3.96GHz and I am very certain I could go higher with little effort. Buy it you will be happy for sure.
Cons: none
