Rating + 5 happy

Pros: I'm happy with it, fast transfers, tons of storage space and a fair price. Western digital is really the ONLY option of an external drive.

Cons: haha, no.

Rating + 4 Good drive for the money

Pros: Purchased this drive a while back when my Seagate drive (a 7200.10 500GB) started getting SMART errors and I needed to copy off files. This drive came through for me and offered a fast USB copy though I couldn't get all the files off in time (but got the ones that mattered). recovering a disk with a physical issue costs $1500 on the low end.

With my particular setup I get around 30MB /sec copy speed. I purchased an additional drive so that I could mirror it (using a simple xcopy batch file script to do nightly backups).

Cons: The drive takes a little bit to spin up sometimes. The second one doesn't seem to have that issue, and the blue LED light is slightly brighter. Makes me wonder how good the quality is, and how long my drive will last.

Other Thoughts: Seems to be a pretty good drive overall, no issues so far. I would recommend it, but buy 2 just to be on the safe side- you don't want to depend on a single drive for all your data. Don't learn the hard way like I did!

Pros: Works great! I've partitioned this into 5 partitions so I can ghost 4 computers and use the 5th for easy windows transfer when changing Operating Systems.

Cons: None so far after 4 to 5 months of use.

Rating + 4 Good Price, Decent Performance

Pros: Plenty of storage space. Sleek, sexy design. Front "remaining hard drive space" indicator is nice. VERY QUIET!

Cons: Transferring large files is tedious; took about four hours to back up 80+GB of data. FAST read times.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this device from Best Buy a week ago, and I could have saved ten bucks if I went with newegg. Overall, I am very satisfied with this device. It performs well, considering the cost and all.

Cons: its to quiet!!! lol

Other Thoughts: i like the little storage meter on the outside of the unit.

Pros: 1 TB is huge and you won't be needing another hard drive for backup or storage any time soon. Works great, you can't even hear the hard drive spin.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: it has so much room which i have so far not even filled up half with movies, music, etc.

Rating + 1 Broke just under 2 mo

Pros: I love western digital, i bought one from BEST BUY and have had it now for 2 years and it works wonderful.

Cons: THIS ONE DOES NOT WORK WELL AT ALL, HAD IT JUST UNDER 2 MONTHS AND IT NO LONGER REGISTERS ON MY COMPUTER, PLUGGED IT IN TO LAPTOP DOESN'T WORK, I ENDED UP PLUGGING IT INTO 3 OTHERS PEOPLES LAPTOPS, LOW AND BEHOLD IT DIDN'T WORK THERE EITHER, I FEEL LIKE IT WAS A COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY TO BY IT FROM HERE.

Other Thoughts: Warning do not expect any help if it has been over there 30 day mark even if its just a freaking day.

Rating + 5 Hey it's a hard drive

Pros: Just bought a second one. I use these as an extra set of redundancy for my data (already raid-5, but hell, storage is cheap). They're a TB and haven't exploded or died yet.

Cons: The software they come with is annoying and takes up space on the drive, so useless in my opinion. I got another (freeware) tool called SyncBack which suits me just fine and doesn't run off the drive.

Other Thoughts: Hard drive, outside the computer! O M G, g33k out.

Rating + 5 NICE !!

Pros: Smooth setup. After waiting formatting from 32bit. After that, i have an external, yet portable 1 TB Storage drive. WD rocks.

Cons: Tranferes my files too, Quick. i was done so fast, i had more then enough time to do house work :(

Other Thoughts: So what it doesn't have a power switch, DOH, just turn off your system and it shuts down on it's own. It even goes into stand by when your system does it's screen saver thing. And wakes up when you come out of screen saver mode. Or just safely remove, (or eject ). Then store it away like you would

Rating + 2 A real piece of junk

Pros: 1 TB minus the 10% overhead of Windows. Easy to use.

Cons: it's not a Seagate. I took me over one week to copy 800 GB of data. One-year warranty

Other Thoughts: I'm glad that I do not own one of these drives. I had copied the same data to a Seagate Free Agent Extreme and it took less than a day.

Rating + 1 Unreliable. All data lost after 6 months.

Pros: I used the external HD to save pictures and family videos and it worked fine for 6 months.

Cons: All data lost.

I decided to move some new videos over for storage and discovered that the HD was no longer detected by Windows. Long story short, after much trouble shooting with support, it turned out that the HD was now showing up as unformatted disk with all data lost.

Other Thoughts: There's one thing to lose backup files but it's another thing to lose your family's pictures and videos. I'm very upset and would not recommend this product.

Rating + 4 great drive. minor flaws

Pros: I bought this drive when I reformatted my machine a little over a year ago, and it's been useful ever since.

the transfer rate between my computer and the drive was quite fast, it took about 90 minutes to transfer about 80 gigs of audio, video, and the like.

Cons: While the drive works wonderfully, there are a couple of minor flaws. For one, the drive uses an a/c for power instead of the usb cable, normally this isn't a huge deal, but I occasionally find myself short of outlets - making it a hassle. The drive is also a little bulky, but that has yet to pose any sort of a problem.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive because it was a few dollars off, but in hindsight, I would've gladly paid full price. It's been fast, reliable, and has plenty of space.

Rating + 5 Very reliable...

Pros: I purchased this to back-up media and important documents. Works very well. Very reliable.

Cons: None to speak of.

Other Thoughts: Keep it in a cool place. Mine is right below an A/C vent so it's not an issue, but it can get pretty warm when in use. Either that or install it in a HDD case that has a fan.

Bought it when it was $98! Nice!

Rating + 3 Just Ok.

Pros: Looks.
Durability. Bought this for 199 during 2007 Thanks giving :) from CCity

Cons: 1. The usb cable end at the hard drive end is very small, clumsy and weak. the port on my HDD is bent :(. It still works. but design wise WD should probably see this coming.
2. Transfer rate into the HDD is moderate!
3. Comes with FAT32 file system! So a Pain to store files over 4 Gb (Hdef movies).. so if u have win xp.. then changing the FS is not ez !!

Other Thoughts: If u want a HD to keep movies and back up files! Highly recommended!

Pros: Doesn't make any weird noises, I had sent back a hard drive for the same reason.. Easy to use...

Cons: Until very recently, I sometimes get a USB device not recognised on some computers/laptops.. It is a little bulky in its design but the color is awesome...

Other Thoughts: Would recommend buying it if you are looking for a good 1TB HD

Rating + 4 Does the Job

Pros: Looks good on the desk. Does what it is supposed to do - Provide lots of storage. I use it for Backups and Archives. Good amount of storage for the price.

Cons: Came formated with FAT32. I converted it to NTFS and I'm happy now. Also came with standard garbage tools - Google Desktop, Backup Trialware, Autosync Trialware - Install the software CD, and it all gets dumped on your PC without telling you what is getting installed. Also wish it had a power switch, I have to unplug it when I don't want it on.

Rating + 5 Great Choice!

Pros: This drive is silent, it's indicators are appropriate rather than obtrusive, and runs very cool. The price is right and it's reliable. What more can you ask for?

Cons: An on-off button. The drive spins up as needed, but I would prefer to be able to turn it off completely when not being used, since I'm using for archiving data. I have to actually unplug it to do this.

Other Thoughts: All in all, an outstanding drive! I have two of them now, and am looking forward to the next model up when I need more space. Shipping and delivery were timely.

Rating + 5 Good value for large storage

Pros: Great storage capacity for a very reasonable cost from a reputable manufacturer.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I'm using this WD 1TB unit as the Time Machine backup for my office Mac. I work with some very large report and graphics files, which, of course, I can't afford to lose, and the drive has worked flawlessly since I connected it nine months ago. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone else.

Pros: What you pay for what you get. That is a lot of space for the money. I don't use it a lot, we just use it to back up our laptops. But I am very happy with it.

Cons: I don't know, not having to pay more?

Other Thoughts: Western digital has never been my first choice in hard drives, and if money is not an issue I still recommend the samung externals. But... this is a good deal and western digital has decent customer service.

Rating + 5 Excellent Buy

Pros: -Worked straight out of the box
-Tons of space at an extremely low price.
-Sexy, small, sleek, cool, quiet.
-Solid construction.
-Works fine with Vista 32bit Home Premium.

Cons: -Transfer speeds were slow for me, at 20mb/s. (Anyone know why?)
-Had to format from FAT32 to NTFS, which took longer than expected (6-8 hours)
-Dust and fingerprint magnet.
-Not powered by USB, which means I have to find an outlet every time I want to use this with my laptop, or use a cramped extension plug.
-Bloatware unnecessary.

Other Thoughts: The cons are negligible when compared to the huge amount of games, movies, songs and pictures this drive allows for. Definitely worth the money, and it helped me free up space on my lappy as well as backup my C: drive. Never used the software that came with the drive, didn't work for me the first time I tried it.

Rating + 5 Durable

Pros: I paid less than $100 for it, runs cool, and is durable.

Cons: Drops off the computer at times and has to be powered down and restarted (might be a problem with Vista and not the drive). Not the faster drive in the world for data transfers.

Other Thoughts: I have had this drive for over a year and i have traveled all over the world with it including some pretty austere environments and it has always worked. I even dropped it from about 3 feet on to a tile floor and it still works. May not be the fastest drive out there but this thing can take a beating. I am about to buy another as this one is full.

Rating + 1 WDH1U10000N - Horrible Speeds

Pros: Cool simple low power design. Looks great. Almost no heat. And I can't hear it unless I stick directly near my ears.

Cons: Speeds are locked at 30mb/s on any computer I plug it into.

I'm certain this drive is defective. On benchmarks, it stays locked reading/writing at 30mb/s. No speed fluctuations or anything. Not natural at all.

No had drive does this. Only flash drives can lock and maintain speed.

I have a cruddy 4200RPM laptop hard drive. It tops out at 60mb/s burst and stays around 30-45mb/s on benchmarks.

Other Thoughts: I guess I have a defective drive and need a replace? And don't get me wrong.

Also, (LOL at the people who are blissfully happy with 10mb/s. You don't think that isn't a bit unnaturally low for this drive?)

Rating + 5 WD 1TB My Book Essential

Pros: Size and Price -- dead quiet -- cool running

Cons: I didnt get the current price break on this HDD and paid more than it costs today -- oh well -- had to have a working back up at that time so fishing for a lower price was not in the cards.

Other Thoughts: Used to back up data on a lap top that is in use literally twenty hours a day. I have had large capacity externals before and they all failed. This is not at all hot -- not even warm and makes no sounds at all. I have worked it very hard for a week without a problem of any sort. I intend to get a second to back up my DVDs which is the finest sort of advertisement I know of short of buying the company.

Rating + 5 The standard in 1 TB drives

Pros: The combination of storage space and price offered by this drive is nearly unmatched. Couple that with some of the best plug and play capability avaliable makes this a great drive. I have a 640 GB edition as well, and they both work great.

Cons: The usb plug on the case is a little loose, so it occasionally loses connectivity, but overall, it's not really a major problem.

Other Thoughts: The drive ships with the FAT32 file system. It works, as long as you don't want to store large files, but I always reformat to NTFS, for use with movies

Rating + 5 Excellent USB External HD

Pros: Easy to hook up. Software pre-loaded on HD. Easy to configure after repartitioning to NTFS from FAT using XP Disk Management.

Memeo interface is a little clunky but it works. It pays to read the Help files!!

Quiet, only hear it when it is doing something.

Cons: Comes with 30-day trial version of Memeo software. An initial completely back-up of an existing HD could take quite awhile.

Other Thoughts: Only using the auto-backup for vital files. I did a manual transfer of other things. So far using about 68GB of the drive.

Rating + 4 Own 4, will continue to buy more

Pros: Seems to be reliable so far
Turns off when disconnected (for PCs, at least, on Mac it does stay on)
Have not experienced drive failure YET (knock on wood...)
So much hard drive space for such a good price
Looks sleek
Nicely stands up like books on a shelf

Cons: Wish it would turn off completely on a Mac when ejected, but the light stays on
Head of AC adapter plug is a little too wide and takes up too much room on a surge protector
Formatting for Mac can be tricky in Leopard OS

Other Thoughts: This is my external hard drive of choice right now, mostly b/c it is so affordable for 1TB of space. I am using it for both Mac and PC. Formatting it for Leopard has caused some issues...I have had to re-format them in an older OS X disk utility to get it to work.
Otherwise, I will continue to purchase these disks. I own four and have not experienced failure with any yet.

Pros: Sleek, quiet, big.

Cons: When i took it out of the box, i could hear a screw not attached and just rolling around inside. I didn't want to send it back, so i just went to wal mart and bought one, switched it with mine, and returned it. Only thing is that the one at wal mart was ten dollars cheaper... i should've checked there first.

Other Thoughts: Never had any problems with newegg before, luckily this product was reletivly common and i was able to find it at a local store. I should've checked there first.

Pros: I bought this for my PS3 to hold movies, music and pictures. It is very quiet (no clicking) and has been a great drive. I just ordered another as I am transferring all of my home pictures and videos. I looked at others and decided to go with another of these. It comes formatted in FAT 32, proper for the PS3.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: 1 TB is no longer enough. I am connecting to a hub to eventually hold 6 of these.

Pros: I think it looks rather nice tucked away in the corner of the desk with the other WD my books I have.

Cons: Irritating ticking noise, slow transfer speed

Other Thoughts: Never had a problem with WD externals, my two 500gigs still work perfectly after almost two years of continual use. While this one runs slow(bairly a quarter of the speed of the 500s), and is rather noisy(irritating ticking noise). I'm worried the ticking is an indication that it might die soon. We'll wait and see.

Rating + 5 Never have to worry about storage again

Pros: I used to be a Seagate person but after buying this drive I definitely switched to Western Digital. Why? They're fast, quiet and the utilities that are provided are absolutely stellar. I formatted it for NTFS but my 4 year old Mac laptop recognizes it no problems whatsoever. I have it connected to my network so I can use it as a backup hard drive and as a music server. As a music server the thing works absolutely fantastic.

Cons: As a backup hard drive, the network transfers are painfully slooooooooooooooooow - especially over a wireless network. But then again it's not made for a network. If you're looking for a network drive I think Western Digital sells a model with network capabilities. If I need to transfer any sort of large files - being a large set of photos, iPhone apps, movies, games, you name it - I have to manually hook up my hard drive and go from there.

Other Thoughts: Just buy the drive, you will not regret it.

Pros: Whisper Quiet operation, quick and simple install, backing up files within 5 minutes. It does what it is advertised to do, what more can you ask for

Cons: Included auto-backup software works great but is only a 30-day trial. Also have the 2TB mirror edition of this drive which includes the full software for free. Would have been nice on this model as well.

Other Thoughts: Used to be a 'Gate fan but as of late the WD drives just seem to be more reliable up in the TB+ range.

Pros: What can i say, it is a 1 TB drive and it holds A LOT of data. I transferred over 500 GB which took a few hours (can't wait until USB 3.0 comes out!). I have a theory about hardware and it is that if it is going to fail it will either do it right away or it will last a long time before it dies.

Since i bought it it has been running fine.

Cons: The only thing i can think of is that the USB cable it comes with is a little short for my taste.

Rating + 3 Dud drive controller - lost backup!

Pros: Silent, fast running, installed straight out of the box.

Cons: Controller blew it's little mind, losing a ton of backup data. Bright light, no way of dimming or turning it off. Power saving features nonexistent. Large wall wart gobbles up precious power strip property. No way of opening case without voiding warranty to check HD itself.

Other Thoughts: It was fun while it lasted, plugged it back into my prime system, "unknown device". WTFrell?! I'm glad I have other drives that are working. RMA to WD to see how they react to this.

Am going to get a Buffalo RAID chassis that I can pull HD's and replace as I go to preserve my data. What a disaster.

Make a dogbone (IE add an AC power cord to it) for power packs 12 volt/1amp and larger so we won't run into space conflicts on power strips.

Rating + 5 Can't beat it.

Pros: Great price, great size, easy to use. Its a hard drive. As long as it doesn't get back sectors or totally fail, it is all good. Western Digital has always been a good drive for me.

Cons: Comes with formatted in FAT32. Nothing a quick re-format in NTFS can't fix, but wondered why it didn't accept a 10.2GB file out of the box.

No power button to turn off when not in use.

Other Thoughts: Purchased this for the WD TV unit. So far it is working great with it. Low noise, little heat, plenty of storage.

Will probably purchase a 1.5tb or 2.0tb when prices fall further.

Pros: Space, this drive is huge. Backed up all three of my main machines onto it along with all my documents and media folders and still have over half of it left. And it looks pretty slick too. Formatted to FAT32 when I got it, reformatted to NTFS in about 20 minutes.

Cons: Doesn't make me coffee.

Pros: More space than I need - even for video storage. Outstanding value. Immediate response for photos. I expected videos to hang but they haven't.

Cons: Comes with some software that wanted to back itself up. Wasn't clear what it was doing. After wasting time on it I just formatted over it.

Other Thoughts: I formatted for NTFS. I've got it on an older PC and it runs the USB at little more than half of USB 2.0 rated speed - but I believe that this is the PC and not the drive. It is certainly WAY faster than any flash drive I've ever attached to my PC. Yes eSATA would be nice/faster but I ain't got one.

Rating + 1 garbage

Pros: It makes a very nice paper weight.

Cons: I had this for a few months and used it to back up my photos as I'm a photographer. I only left it plugged in while I was using it so 99% of the time it was just sitting there. I went to use it a few weeks ago and the drive kept spinning up and then stopping and did this continually until I unplugged it. I tried it again today and it did the same thing. You also have to pay to use the auto backup software that came with it, which is ridiculous in my mind.

Other Thoughts: I guess I'm bad luck with Western Digital because of the 5 various hard drives I've bought from them all of them have been garbage, either DOA or breaking down very quickly.

Rating + 4 For backup

Pros: Look nice with light indicator that it's still kicking. It powered down when you shut off your computer. Look to be very well built but don't drop it lol. I returning my 1.5tb Seagate drive for this because it didn't start up right.

Cons: Knock off an egg because of trial software like Memeo. It's a good software but trial is bad since you spend this much already on the drive it should be free. Slow transfer speed but about the same speed with my 250gb HP portable drive. Uses external power so it isn't very "green" enough. The software is inside the drive so don't expect a disc on the package.

Other Thoughts: As a Graphic Designer, it's very important to backup your work. I once lost my whole drive and my backup DVD disc is corrupted. It also help if you have an off site backup for when someone decided to "take" your desktop/laptop without permission.

Rating + 1 Beware: Not what it seems

Pros: There are not a lot of pros I can give this hard drive except for its very quite.... And shiny..

Cons: Where to begin.
The device seems to crash in incomplete transfers all the time on different computers with different OS.

And the transfer Speed is absolutely Horrible!

Other than that the big blue lights will drive you nuts.

Not to mention the cool looking tower idea is a horrible one in the reference that it can easily tip over.

Only 1 Year warranty :(

Other Thoughts: Beware: I found this product not to be very competitive.
Plus it only only has 16MB cache unlike very many other externals which provide 32mb cache.

If your looking for a really good hard drive, check out the Seagate external black flat edition. I even spent the extra $15 for the 1.5TB with Seagate, and it comes with a 2 year warranty, and is twice as fast as the western digital.

Rating + 4 Typical Great WD Quality

Pros: Large storage, whisper-quiet.

Cons: Only USB, but obviously that's what I chose to save money. WD started shipping really short USB cables with these. My old My Book USB cable is almost double the length of this one.

Glossy plastic will be scratched up before you even have it out of the box. I'm amazingly careful with all of my electronics, but this thing looks like it's gone through a war. I miss the old My Book cases.

Other Thoughts: I've used it as a standard external drive, as well a Time Machine backup for Mac. Both work outstanding.

My second My Book. It's time for me to move up to a big boy 4-bay enclosure, but I'll always look fondly at the My Book line.

Cons: It's not e-sata.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you format to NTFS is using this drive for backups.

Rating + 5 Excellent purchase

Pros: Large storage capacity, small footprint (it is a full sized desktop HD after all). HD is encased by 4 good sized rubber bushings andthe sleek glossy black plastic shell that you see.

Cons: mini USB plug and power plug could be a little bit more secure in feeling during unpluging and pluging in. If you aren't going to be moving it around much, you won't notice it.

Other Thoughts: For those complaining about transfer speeds, it is the USB 2.0 interface that limits the full capability of this SATA HD. Also, depending upon how many USB devices you currently have plugged in at the same time will affect transfer speeds. USB is allocated a certain percentage of total bandwidth for opereational use. The more devices you have plugged in, the less bandwidth you will get going to he HD. If the HD is the only USB device plugged in I see transfers in the 18-20MB (write) range. Fully loaded with 6 USB devices going at the same time knocks it down to around 6MB (write) Read speeds are reasonably faster in both scenarios. I will be buying another one soon as I am backing up my entire DVD, and CD collection to HDD(s)

Pros: The WD 1 TB external drive was a snap to set up. Using windows XP and the USB 2.0 connection the computer recognized the drive, installed drivers and was ready to go in less than 2 minutes. Did a format for ntsf and up and running. I store all of my files on the drive and if needed I can simply unplug from USB and take it with me. Connects to any Win computer in seconds. Light weight. For the money this is a bargain.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: If you want a large reliable external storage drive that is as easy to use as the old floppy disks at a very low cost, this is the one to have.

Rating + 5 Worth every penny

Pros: The unit is using the WD Caviar Green 1TB hard drive which costs $99.99 at the moment and the entire unit costs $115. $15 for the enclosure and USB connection is an excellent deal. The drive is responding very fast and very quiet. I own many WD hard drives and none of them fail in front of me. Few of my WD hard drives I own over 15 years and still perform perfectly. I am highly recommend WD on the technology stand points and the built quality. A 500GB data recovery costs $900 to $1300. Spend little more money on a reliable product is wisely for future.

Cons: WD is little pricey but worth every penny compare with other band names' failure rates such as Seagate, Samsung and Hitachi.

Other Thoughts: WD could install a hard switch to power the unit instead of auto detect. Save more power on stand by mode.

Rating + 5 Excellent external HD

Pros: *Very quiet
*930 GB of free space
*Cool black glossy finish
*Instantly recognized by Windows XP
*Relatively small - about the size of a short, but thick book
*Blue LED lights
*Easy USB connection
*Portable

Cons: Transfer speed is slower than an internal HD with Sata 3.0 gb/s. It takes around 1 minute per GB. Not really a con, but you should know this before purchasing. I generally transfer video files around 4 - 15 GB in size, which translates into a
"wait" of 4-15 minutes. "Wait" is in quotations because I just set it and forget it and let it work in the background. For a USB 2.0 device, I'm very happy with it.

Other Thoughts: The black finish is nice but fingerprints and smudges show up easily. I don't plan on showcasing my external HD, so it's not a big deal.

I planned on buying this from Newegg, but I saw it for $99 bucks at BBuy so I snagged it.

Pros: Saves power by powering down when not in use (increases drive life, too), large capacity, small AC adapter.

Cons: Glossy case shows fingerprints and scratches, takes a few seconds to spin up after it powers down to save power.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to store my ripped DVD collection. I'm using about half of the capacity so far and that's with 56 DVDs and three seasons of TV shows (2 six-disc and 1 four-disc).
If you're planning to do this, keep in mind that Vista Media Center's DVD Library requires this to be set up as a network share in order to play your ripped DVDs.
I'm planning to buy another one soon for my music collection.

Rating + 5 Nice External :D

Pros: This External Hard Drive is very nice with the complimentary set up and applications that you can try out and fiddle around with :D
It stores a lot, well for me at least with 5 computers that have a lot of things that i want to store in here.
it has 2 little blue lights inside, top and bottom, very nice to see when it is in use, as it flickers up and down switching on and off, nice to look at when your bored and waiting for that big file to get in there.
nice speed also, i put around about 44.7 GB in the External and it took about 2 hours, that's quite fast.
On the bottom of the book there's a nice smooth material like the tissue you use to clean your glasses, great for not scratching up your computer/desk if you let it sit in a nice place to see :D

Cons: It only comes with around 930 GB, wheres my other 70GB?
Also if you delete the things inside of it manually you will lose the icon for the "My Computer" manually opening in and stuff.
And the power cable adapter is pretty lose when it connects to a wall or surge protector.
not connecting to the book its self but the other end.
although it could be my problem, but don't let that hold you back.

Other Thoughts: its pretty heavy but that's not a problem, it does its job well.
The lights should of changed different colors that would of been cool.
other than that, for this being my first External Hard Drive its very nice :D
its a buy.

Pros: Up-time -- I have this in service as a nightly incremental backup drive for my Buffalo Linkstation NAS and it is always on 24x7. It has never hiccupped or anything... very reliable

Cons: Not really a con to me due to its primarily backup role, but I do notice that if I need to directly access something from the drive, it can sometimes take 5 seconds to 'spin up' from being dormant. But, once it has "woken up" it reacts pretty quickly.

Pros: It is a great external storage solution. 1TB gives you a lot of room. It does have a nice glossy look, and is a wonderful addition on a desk. Easily formatable to NTFS.

Cons: For pictures and documents it is great. However, if you wish to view videos on it, it tends to be laggy, sometimes choppy and slow. The drive also makes your boot up take longer. It is also only USB.

Other Thoughts: USB drives, are nice for storage or back ups. I would not recommend these for users who wish to store and view videos or any large files on.

Instead of having it turn of, they should reduce the drive's RPM when idling to 5400rpm or lower. When there is activity it can spin up to 7200rpm. Drive is also noisy, I can hear it across the room. Not very noisy when it set horizontally, but it has no rubber feet to put it horizontal. I'm not going to by WD external drives any more.

Rating + 5 Good external hard drive

Pros: It's decently fast, has lots of space, easy to format to NTFS, looks good.

Cons: Comes formatted as FAT, has minimal bloatware from Western Digital, takes a while to start up but that's expected from a hard drive.

Other Thoughts: It's a really good buy if you have lots of music, movies, photos, or other stuff that you want to save or backup.

Rating + 5 500 gb vs 1,000 gb.

Pros: Truly plug & play. 1TB! Cool design, looks like a digital book should look.

Cons: Blue LED light. No On/Off Button. Micro USB port.

Other Thoughts: Having owned a similar 500gb Western Digital Ext Drive, I decided to buy a 1 TB one, mostly because it looked alot like the old drive. The differences between the two is that the newer 1 TB drive has no on/off switch like the older 500gb one had. The older drive had a large circle like button, when pressed turned the device on and prompted a green LED light to illuminate around the button (pretty cool). The new 1 TB drive has no button, you plug it in and on it goes with a blue LED light that switches back and forth like a Cylon with downs syndrome. The only way to turn it off is to unplug the power.

The Micro-USB port is new, the older drive had a square USB Hub port, which I had dozens of spare cables of all lengths. I do not have many Micro-USB cables, so I will have to buy an extension as the 3 foot cable (that came with the unit) isn't long enough to get around most of my equipment.
