WD is king
Pros: Great drive so far. I bought this as a secondary storage drive for my Asus G50V laptop and now I'm considering replacing my main drive (320 GB 7,200 rpm western digital) with one as well. 1.2 TB in my laptop would be nice. The sacrifice in speed would be barely noticeable anyway. SSD drives are overrated and I'm not about to sacrifice precious space for the hype, much less the ridiculous price and the firmware bugs they have.
Cons: None that I have seen so far.
Other Thoughts: I work as a systems administrator for a large hosting company and I can assure you that Western Digital is the way to go. I replace bad Seagate drives almost daily and very seldom do I have to replace Western Digital drives unless it's at the very end of it's life cycle. When I get replacement drives back from Seagate, they are always the exact same drive and often fail not long after. Some I have have had to RMA 3-4 times. When I RMA a 3 year old Western Digital drive, they always send the very latest version of that capacity drive, brand new. My desktop (4 x 1TB drives), my laptop (1 x 320 GB and 1 x 640 GB), my wife's laptop (1 x 320 GB) and my netbook (1 x 320 GB) all have Western Digital drives in them, I made sure of that.

Excellent Drive
Pros: Nice and quiet. Compatible with my 13" Macbook Pro 2009.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: The swap to this drive was very easy using cloning software and a SATA USB enclosure I had kicking around. I've been running from this hard drive for a few months, and doing a lot of ripping, decoding, and rendering. No problems whatsoever. Catch this drive on sale and you're golden.

PS3 Compatible 640GB Drive
Pros: Great Upgrade to the stock PS3 hard drive and works perfect. Great price too!
Cons: none yet
Other Thoughts: I waited a month before I left a review to make sure there wasn't any errors after some hard core uses.

Nice drive, but kinda loud
Pros: Huge capacity!
Cons: It's sort of noisy. I never noticed drive noise on other hard drives I've owned, but this one you can definitely hear. I even sent my original one back to WD as I thought it might be defective, but the one they sent me back sounds the same. Guess I'll get used to it. (It's not THAT bad)

Excellent PS3 Hard drive
Pros: Easy to install. Came very quickly to my house. Runs really quiet and no lags what so ever.
Cons: No real cons to speak of yet. Once formatted it only reads as 596 and not 640. Just wondering where did 44gigs go?

Good Sized 2.5" Drive
Pros: Highest capacity laptop drive they currently make - I went from a 320gig to this one and could never go back. Gives me plenty of space to store lots of media plus dual boot my system between Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7
Cons: None really. It can't make me a sandwich?
Other Thoughts: Write speeds are a fairly good average. Copying a mix of large (1+gb) and small files the average write speed seems to be around 26meg/sec on an ext4 formatted partition.

Excellent
Pros: This HD replaced a 250GB original MacBook drive. No problems with installation. It is just as quiet as the original HD.
NewEgg's shipping was fast and I could not find a lower Cdn. price for this drive anywhere.
Cons: So far, none.

works fine in PS3 Slim
Pros: Working as expected in a PS3 Slim firmware 3.15. Had to try this one because the WD Scorpio 320GB WD3200BEVT did not work in the Slim model.
Cons: None

Great PS3 Upgrade
Pros: Large capacity - 529 GB formatted (and ready to go) on my PS3 No noise Absolutely no problems since the swap Newegg price and shipping can't be beaten
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: Bought this to upgrade when my 60GB PS3 ran out of room. The swap would only have been easier if two of those screws hadn't stripped. Even so, I was quickly able to remove the screws with a needle nose - they are so soft it's easy to take them out with the pliers. 10 minute total job even so. I didn't remember to write down how long it took to backup / format / reinstall but it was maybe an hour each for the backup and install. The inital format size was 596GB. Then, once the PS3 installs its core files, it was reduced to 529GB. After I reinstalled my old data, it was reduced to 483GB. So that's basically what you'll really be paying for and it's worth it, especially at Newegg's prices.

Never had a problem
Pros: I put this in my white mac book and have had no problems. I think it is a little faster and quieter than the standard 160gb drive that came standard. Battery life seems unaffected. What more can I ask for?
Cons: I have nothing to complain about. I wish there were more competition at this level. I might have been tempted by a 7200rpm drive. I deducted 1 egg simply because Newegg took 2 weeks to ship my drive. I think I bought it on sale, I don't remember. Newegg is normally very good about such things so I am inclined to believe it is an aberration.
Other Thoughts: It is nice to have this much storage in a laptop. I much prefer internal storage to carrying around all sorts of external drives. With such a big drive full of important pictures, it is important to back up frequently.

Lots of storage, works great
Pros: Lots of storage, shock sensor that doesn't freak out with Apple's own shock sensor in their laptops, reliable, doesn't draw excess power or generate huge amounts of heat, works well with Apple laptops
Cons: Not 7200 rpm - can be a bit slow when there is a lot of hard drive traffic going on
Other Thoughts: WD has another hit with this drive, which is the best in the market in its category. I've had it for several months now and it has been flawless and let me retire my main server since now I can fit all my files on my laptop.

Dead at age 30 (days)
Pros: High Capacity 640 gb
Cons: Bought this to upgrade an HP laptop from 250 gb hitachi-star running Vistuh to Windows 7. Spent hours upgrading and reloading after clone. Drive began flaking out within a couple weeks (long chkdsk at boot, etc.) Now won't operate at all and cannot be accessed to save files.
Other Thoughts: First WD drive to fail me so badly. Now waiting for "Advance RMA." Props to WD for sending a replacement before getting back the dead drive from me.

Eggcellent for PS3!
Pros: Large capacity for 2.5" HDD Runs as fast if not faster than original 60gb PS3 HDD Flawless playback of 1920x1080 videos
Cons: Wish it were a 1TB SSD ;')
Other Thoughts: I installed this in a 60gb fat PS3 and use it to store HD videos, my whole music library and many photos. I bought this when it was $99, only $5 more than the nearest 500gb 5400rpm WD drive. This was a fantastic deal and also helped me save money on my energy bill... LOL. I used to stream video from my desktop and now I can just play directly from the drive without worries of running out of space (for now).

Great drive, annoying price
Pros: It is amazing the amount of space my poor old Blackbook has now. Great for taking movies with me camping this summer. It runs cool and zero problems so far.
Cons: This drive's price is more volatile than the price of gas. Bought on the Black Friday sale price of $89. See it often at $99. Can you stick with a price?
Other Thoughts: Where are the bigger drives? They are definately not on NewEgg.

Drive dead in 3 days
Pros: Seems fast and large capacity
Cons: drive suffered a master boot error after 3 days. Then made grinding noise whenever it tried to run and computer says only 1/3 of capacity available. Will not initialize, format or read after that. Hoping this is just a bad unit and getting a replacement one

PS3 firdt now for my laptop
Pros: Made my PS3 into a real beast for holding Data
Cons: I didn't get two when I had the chance
Other Thoughts: I put this drive in My PS3 and now I need to upgrade my laptop. This drive will again be my choice cause it has all the memory I have the space for.

Hot, but it works.
Pros: It is big. I can't complain about lack of space at all. When I bought it (not sure now) it was the biggest 9mm drive I could find.
I was able to stick it in my Toshiba netbook with few problems after ghosting my prior drive. The biggest issue was finding a free program that would easily ghost everything. It does what it is supposed to do after a having been using it for a month.
Cons: It definitely runs hotter than my prior drive that came with my netbook. I am definitely concerned about how the heat will affect my netbook in the long run as I'm just not sure it is built to handle it and whether or not it might affect other parts of the computer.
My prior drive was a 5400rpm 120GB drive. This one is noticeably slower, but still works fine. I'm assuming the difference in speed has something to do with the volume size, it isn't that much of a difference, but it is noticeable. I can't say that I am overly impressed.
Other Thoughts: I give it 3/5 because it meets expectations but doesn't exceed them. In some ways it is slightly disappointing (how hot it runs and slightly slower than I expected). Again, I don't want to sound like the speed is horrible, it works at a more than adequate speed, but it is slower than my old drive.
Also, as it says, it is a bare drive. There was no mounting cage on it. It would appear that the screws holding the mounting cage on my old drive are glued in. They seriously will not budge. So, in order for me to get the drive to stay in place I had to use electrical tape. I have yet to open the case since doing this and due to the heat I am apprehensive of what awaits. I'm kind of expecting a gooey black mess.

WD is slipping back to 1996 days...
Pros: Capacity...
Cons: Here's the lowdown: 1. Had a raid of 4-3.5" WD 160 drives fail; call to WD results - Not recommended for RAID. 2. Purchased 2 of these WD6400BEVT drives; 1 for external enclosure for laptop and 1 for use with Mac Mini... Problem: Draws too much power for Mac mini, and driver installation failure for BOTH drives in 3 different external enclosures that support no less than 1TB drives. Called WD- Result? "We don't recommend our drives for neither the Mac nor external enclosures." I said, "Then why do your other Scorpios work fine in them?" -They didn't know. So I put these GRUDGINGLY as internal drives in my laptop. Result? 25MB to 30MB MAX transfer rates, constant data corruption, slow boots... These drives are JUNK. And all this after making the HUGE mistake of plunking down 450 bucks for their crippled, MIONET CR@P MyBooks, that they FAILED to notify us, the public, who wanted to use them as home media servers that they will not serve media due to shotgun-style DRM restrictions.
Other Thoughts: I think they should just say "We do not recommend our drives for COMPUTERS, or ANYTHING for that matter, other than filling pillow cases with them for use in bludgeoning Bill Gates for VISTA crippling every laptop in existence.
WD should close their doors. They have cost me WAY too much money for cr@p that doesn't work. What are the odds that both WD6400BEVT's are bad?
I used to trust them when their drives were quality; I SWORE by them.
Now... I WANT ALL OF MY MONEY BACK! ALL 1,100 BUCKS I'VE SPENT ON THEIR JUNK!
ZERO EGGS for ZERO performance.

Upgrade for a 80GB PS3
Pros: Good value for the money. Quick delivery. Free shipping. Easy to install to PS3.
Cons: O.E.M. Packaging
Other Thoughts: Works perfect as an upgrade for the PS3. Use the utility to backup your old game data onto a external USB hard drive. Download the latest firmware for the PS3 onto a flash drive. Install the hard drive. Plug in a controller and plug in the USB flash drive with the firmware. Follow the directions. Whammo!

Nice Drive Man!!!
Pros: Size (640 gigs is way cool), ease of install, price...
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: Would be nice to see a 1tb or 1 tb+ internal drive this size with the 16mb cache but for now this is great and serves my needs fully... Still have room available after importing a ton of music and video...

Not bad
Pros: Capacity, 640GB is plenty of room for your music, video, games, etc. I haven't noticed a performance hit after replacing the original 7200rpm drive.
Cons: Spindle speed is only 5400rpm, but this drive only utilizes two platters.
Other Thoughts: As soon as SSD drives have some useful capacity, sign me up. Until then I will stick to high capacity conventional drives.

great PS3 upgrade
Pros: price per GB, free shipping, western digital
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: My PS3 formated and did the update on this drive in 10 minutes. It seems to be quieter then the 80gb it came with. would love to see the 1TB in 9.5mm form factor but this will work. by the way after formating the drive shows 531/596gb.

Good Sized for a Laptop
Pros: Have this in a Sager Quad Core laptop I use as a software developer. I have 2 SSDs in RAID 0 as my main OS drive. I use this 640GB drive as my backup and to store about 8,000,000 icons.
Cons: Would be nice to have it be 7,200 RPM.

Great for AS1410 Netbook
Pros: Slips right into the bay on my AS1410-SU3500 and hooks right into SATA interface. 5400 RPM speed matched the 5400 RPM of my factory drive. Booted it up the first time and installed my Acer recovery discs just fine.
+Great size. +Decent speed. +Ease of installation.
Cons: It couldn't get any bigger than 640GB? Can't really find a real fault yet.
Other Thoughts: The biggest 2.5 in drive on the market and Western Digital is a great brand. I recommend this hardware.

Loud While Spinning
Pros: Large capacity, low price. Bought it while on sale for $90.
Cons: It has a definitive sound while spinning, similar white noise to that of many computer fans. Approximately 36 dBA with head one meter from my January 2009 unibody MacBook Pro.

Excellent hard drive
Pros: Large size, extremely quite, power consumption in real world is quite low. I did extensive search before making the purchase and I am glad I bought it. I have no trouble to put this drive in my Macbook pro (model A1226) and I am very pleased with its overall performance. It is slightly slower than some of the 7200rpm sata drives (hardly noticeable in most cases) but the extra space justifies this shortcoming. BTW, this is my very first purchase from newegg and I am very satisfied with the product as well as the shipping. I would recommend this hard drive and newegg to anyone who is in need.
Cons: None so far but will update if anything comes up.
Other Thoughts: I wish this would be a 7200rpm drive. SSD is still too expensive and too small in size, even though things are getting better. In my opnion, either this WD 640GB/5400rpm drive or those seagate/hatachi 500GB/7200rpm drives would be the best bang for your buck at the moment if anyone want to upgrade their laptop.

Poor PS3 Movie playback game lag
Pros: Lots of space easy to install and format.
Cons: Stuttering video playback of HD movies. Some game lag when HDD is accessed.
Other Thoughts: Very annoying when watching movies and playing games. Quite noticeable when compared to my original HDD. I have the 80GB PS3 with 3.15FW.

windows 7 issue
Pros: is real quiet
Cons: the drive kept getting me hardware errors when I loaded windows 7 crashed 5 times during the install- may be a driver issue - I did send it back for a new one.. this is the first western digital drive that I had a issue with....
Other Thoughts: none

Scorpio Blue WD6400BEVT 640GB 5400 RPM 8MB
Pros: Updated PS3 (K01) to this drive to have room for all my Rock Band & Game downloads. Works, cool and quite
Cons: Would have liked to have a large 7200 rpm, large buffer drive that fit the ps3; but, Seagate drives mostly SUCK!
Other Thoughts: As a Repair Tech for 15 years, it has been my experience that Seagate drives have one of the highest failure rates.

Upgrade for my HP DV9260nr
Pros: Plenty of space for loading Windows 7 and all my software applications, easy install, I got it for a good price 84.00, upgrade one of the 2 installed 120gb hard drives I have in my HP DV9000 series 17" notebook. Quiet and cool.
Cons: I should have bought 2, shows up as 596.00gb
Other Thoughts: Wish I had bought two on black Friday instead of one. I will be upgraing to this drive or may wait and get a terabyte for my ps3, I currently have a 160gb.

Great for MacBook Pro
Pros: 9.5mm height, so it fits in the Unibody MBPs. 640GB (596GB formatted) is enough space to keep most things on internal storage.
Cons: None so far

Good Drive
Pros: Large Capacity, Fits in standard 2.5in drive bay
Cons: Non so far
Other Thoughts: I bought this on Black Friday special over the 7200 500GB for the same price at $89. Free shipping too. It has been working well in my Late 2006 Macbook though the system is a hair slower now than with the 200GB 7200 drive. Needed room for pictures and didn't mind the performance hit so this was the drive for me!

Pros: Decent price for the capacity and standard 2.5" size.
Cons: Only 8MB cache
Other Thoughts: Just to let fellow PS3 owners know, the PS3 automatically reserves 10% of the HDD for system purposes. That is why you lose so much space when you format. I was getting tired of people complaining about space they lose when they format so I felt I should through that bit of info out there.

Died on the fifth day
Pros: Great price.
Cons: HD failed after 5 days. Had another Western Digital HD fail on me last year at this time.
Other Thoughts: Waiting for RMA replacement. Worked great for 5 days. I had everthing backed up. This kind of thing has happened before and you need to be prepared for it.

Good upgrade drive.
Pros: High capacity and perfect fit for a notebook. It's also relatively faster than my old Hitachi 320GB drive. I haven't done any real tests yet, but I don't think the one review blasting this driver over its speed should be taken too seriously.
Cons: More noticeable noise than my old Hitachi. To be fair, Hitachis tend to be much more quiet than other drives, and this one isn't THAT loud. It's sonic signature seems to be less of a whir (as I'm used to), and much more of a whoosh. Basically it sounds almost identical to my notebook's relatively quiet fan which I already unconsciously tune out.
Other Thoughts: I got this at a great price during the Black Friday sales. At this price it's still probably a good buy, but not the instant must-have as it was.
If you're looking for a 640GB drive perhaps prices will drop whenever other companies start pushing them out (has to be soon right?) or they start making 750GB drives that can actually fit in a notebook.

Now I have room to edit video
Pros: Fast, quiet, reliable. Now I have room for those large video editing projects on my Asus N81Vp.
Cons: None. I have found Western Digital hard drives to be generally reliable.

So much storage, so little space!
Pros: The drives are so quiet I can barely hear them when they're a foot away from me. They're the largest capacity within the form factor. WD makes some mighty fine drives.
Cons: None. This is the perfect drive for my application. I suppose I could want more drive space, but who doesn't nowadays?
Other Thoughts: I'm using a couple of these in a Synology DS409slim in a RAID 1. I fully intend to up the system to a RAID 5 in a couple of months, but I'm holding off so that all my drives come from different manufacturing lots.

Happy PS3 owner recommends this HD
Pros: Large Drive Capacity and is inauditable, but I also sit about 8 feet away from my PS3.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: It took 8 business days to arrive from NewEgg.ca (decent shipping time) and very well packed. Upgrading from a backwards compatable 80GB PS3 (software version as opposed to the hardware version) to this WD 640GB HD. Backwards software compatability for PS2 games still works after HD upgrade.

Good PS3 HDD Replacement
Pros: Got this drive and installed it in my PS3 today, so far no complaints. My PS3 runs mostly quiet and it's really nice not having to worry about running out of space. Just be warned, the 640GB goes down to 596 when fully formatted into the PS3 System.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: If you need a replacement HDD for your PS3, this is the right one to purchase.

Best option for my mac
Pros: The hard drive was very inexpensive and offering 640 gb (599.whatever after i had formatted it in Mac OS Extended (journaled) for my macbook) It runs a lot quieter and cooler than the stock hitachi that came with the macbook.
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: if it were 7200 rpm and 16mb cache then it would be perfect ;] Also for those of you who are planning on replacing you're stock macbook hard drive just make sure you have a backup (I would recommend using either super duper or leopard's time machine) If you are using time machine you can easily copy everything over by booting to the leopard install disc and selecting time machine from the utilities menu at the top.

Good drive
Pros: Not a speed demon but I am using it in an external drive. Doesn't cost an arm and a leg. for the GBs you get.
Cons: not a 7200rpm drive. More fragile then a SSD especially being an external drive.
Other Thoughts: Good amount of storage and decently fast. no complaints and i have had a good experience with past Western Digital drives.

pleased...
Pros: bought specifically to upgrade my old ps3 that had a 160gb hd. system returned from sony repair on 12/4/2009, install this drive on 12/6/2009, system recognized and formatted without a problem. Actual formatted capacity under the PS3 OS is 596gb, with 529gb available following a bone-stock format under firmware 3.01....drive is totally silent.
Cons: at this point...none.
Other Thoughts: a little price, but the most bang you can get (i think)

Extra Space Not Worth Decrease In Speed
Pros: I wanted the biggest drive I could get. I'm probably as much of a "power user" as you can be without using my computer for graphics, video or being a programmer. And it is indeed super cool to have enough space to have my entire iTunes Library 2 times over - to have enough space to do anything I can think of!
Cons: Unfortunately I'm maxed out on RAM for my 2 year old Macbook Pro and the difference between 5400 rpm and my older 7200 drive is more than palpable - it's excruciating. As soon as I publish this review, I'm going to buy the biggest drive I can at the higher speed. Don't know if the extra space also affects the speed, but wouldn't be surprised.
Other Thoughts: If you don't need all 640 Gigs (600 formatted), get something smaller & faster.

nice
Pros: high capacity, I upgrade from 60G drive to 640G, no complain here. easy to install it literally take a couple of minutes to swap in this new drive in my 3 year old dell notebook. partition the drive , restore windows xp using Acronis and install windows 7 pro on a different partition all takes less than 3 hours, I would say this hard drive is fast compare to my old drive
Cons: once a while , I can hear some funny noise (random click) from the hard drive, otherwize it is pretty much silent, not really a con, completely acceptable to me.
Other Thoughts: If this drive can last more than one year, I would more than happy to buy it again as the replacement.

Excellent Laptop Hard Drive
Pros: +Largest capacity standard 9.5mm laptop drive on the market now +FAST for a 5400RPM drive (due to the super-high data density of 320GB per *platter*...twice as dense as 5400RPM 320GB drives as each of their two platters are only 160GB, so half the amount of data passes in each revolution) +Very quiet (quieter than the stock 320GB Toshiba MacBook drive) +Low power consumption (battery life improved ~15-20% (!!!) over the stock 320GB Toshiba MacBook drive) +Western Digital quality
Cons: -Not a SSD (obviously...so that's not really a con)
=======[End of Cons...here are the benchmark tests]=======
320GB 5400RPM Toshiba (MacBook stock drive): Overall Score 40.55 [Sequential] Uncached Write 32.63 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Write 31.27 MB/sec [256K blocks] Uncached Read 23.22 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Read 35.42 MB/sec [256K blocks] [Random] Uncached Write 1.14 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Write 22.14 MB/sec [256K blocks] Uncached Read 0.45 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Read 17.33 MB/sec [256K blocks]
640GB 5400RPM Western Digital (this drive): Overall Score 60.84 [Sequential] Uncached Write 73.56 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Write 59.20 MB/sec [256K blocks] Uncached Read 21.55 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Read 68.10 MB/sec [256K blocks] [Random] Uncached Write 1.75 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Write 36.09 MB/sec [256K blocks] Uncached Read 0.47 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Read 22.43 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Other Thoughts: Got a great price on Newegg this past Black Friday. Installed in my late-2008 Aluminum Unibody MacBook. Ran XBench on the MacBook's stock 320GB Toshiba 5400RPM drive before the swap to get some benchmarks. Swapped in the WD drive, did a Time Machine full restore, then ran XBench again. Results are above in the "Cons" section as there isn't enough room in this section.
Overall, this drive is huge. Best data density for standard consumer 2.5" drives at the moment. That makes it typically faster than 320GB 7200RPM laptop drives, and gives the 500GB Seagate 7200RPM drive a run for its money. Keeping the RPMs down saves on battery life, and this drive seems extremely well designed & optimized for low power consumption. Super easy to install in the aluminum unibody MacBooks or MacBook Pros, no compatibility issues. Recently, Seagate drives seem to be heading downhill in the quality department. Western Digital is still top-notch, and I will be buying them exclusively from now on.

Small, Efficient, Large Capacity
Pros: Excellent drive only draws 2.5 watts of power which is fairly average for laptop drives but this one with 640GB, a 3 year warrenty, and still in the 9.5mm category is perfect for netbooks which is what I did with it. It fits perfectly in my Asus 1005HA and I still get 9 hours and 45 mins battery life as opposed to the 10.5 with the stock 160. The main difference is the 160 is a singly platter drive and uses slightly less power by .5 watts but the two platter 640 is still the most bang for the buck.
Cons: They have yet to introduce a 1TB 9.5mm drive
Other Thoughts: I purchesed this drive the day before Black Friday for the regular Newegg price, but on black Friday it dropped $40 in price and when I called Newegg to ask if I could have the discounted price they happily abliged even thought they technically didnt have to. Thanks Newegg!! Great service as always...

Thought I got a DOA
Pros: High capacity, quiet, great price during black friday.
Cons: Format not recognized by windows.
Other Thoughts: My laptop had two expansion bays. After installing it, Windows 7 could not recognize the drive, although the device manager shows it installed. Partition Magic found it, but could not reformat or partition. Used G-Parted and it had problems formattiing as well.
G-Parted somehow got it partitioned and I was able to utilize the second partition. The first partition would not be recognized even when trying to install fresh copy of windows.
But another attempt with G-Parted later somehow got things running perfectly afterwards.
Satisfied...for now.

Quiet??
Pros: 640GB; price.
Cons: Loud. I don't know what everyone else is talking about when they say it's quiet. The official specs for this drive say it idles at 24dB! To put that in perspective, I have SilenX fans in my PC that are 14dB. This drive is EIGHT TIMES louder than one of those!
Other Thoughts: I'm probably going to get a replacement for this to see if it's quieter. But even if my drive is an anomaly, I think the 24dB figure needs to be stated and considered.

Not for PS3
Pros: Fast, high capacity, cool running drive.
Cons: Does not have any way to force it to 1.5g SATA (I), I called support and they informed me that they have no firmware, software, or jumper solution to set it to 1.5g SATA. The 2 (4 pins) jumper blocks are for Spread spectrum clocking, and Reduced power spinup.
Other Thoughts: The PS3 will work with a 3.0 SATA (II) drive, but any time you play a game off the drive, or any rockband DLC, you will get freezes and skipping. Do a little research before you buy a drive for the PS3 and make sure it has a jumper option for SATA I.

In the MBP 13"
Pros: I installed this drive in my 13" MacBook Pro yesterday. I used time machine and the OSX install disk to transfer my files over from my old hard drive. All went well and installation was no problem. I'm loving the fact that I have 640GB of space now, as I had the 160GB hard drive in my laptop.
Cons: The drive is noticeably louder than the stock drive in the MacBook Pro. Everyone else says that it is quiet but I would like to say the exact opposite. I don't know if this is a problem with my particular drive, or maybe the drive that I had before was just much more quiet.
Other Thoughts: I really wish that this drive wasn't so loud. If the noise was the same as my old drive I would have given it five stars.

Great addition to a Macbook Pro
Pros: Installation was a breeze, without a kink. This drive is extremely quiet you have to hold your head up to the laptop to hear it. great value on the largest 9.5mm (standard size) laptop harddrive newegg has.
Cons: none

So far so good!
Pros: Price was excellent! On sale cheaper than most 500gb drives. Have never used Western Digital before but this 640gb runs much much quieter than the factory 100gb I replaced in my 2.16 MBP. So far seems to run fairly cool also.
Cons: A 7200 that doesn't hurt battery life at all would be excellent next time! (not complaining about 5400 tho)
Other Thoughts: Install went smooth, used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone a copy to the 640gb while it was installed in my roommates external enclosure. Simply popped out the old and popped in the new, ZERO INSTALL ISSUES.

Laptop Drive
Pros: Big size, came fast. Excellent price. (I got it on sale.)
Cons: None. I did not try to find Drive moving software on WD site. (I have my own.) WD has some, which is supposed to be good. They switched software companies as of Early Sept 2009.
Other Thoughts: Using in a Win7 OS HD swap to a bigger HD. (Two partitions.) Acronis TI 2010(bootCD) auto proportioned the drive sizes. (Image then restore by way of a 1T USB HD.) Acronis DDS ver 10 does not support Win 7, and Win7 only allowed "C" to be shrunk, but not "D" to use that unallocated space. Unless I'm missing something, I have to clean off "D" (the second partition) and delete it. Then re-allocate all un-used space as one big second partition. (Hope I said that all clear.) Not a problem, but was unexpected.

Pros: I love NewEgg. This is my first bad experience.
Cons: DOA
Other Thoughts: This item had a 5/5 when I ordered it. Thought I should add my experience for others to take into account. I'll be doing an RMA. Not sure whether I'll re-order the same item.

Great Drive for MacbookPro
Pros: Very Energy efficient, QUIET, speed is good, shows 639.16 GB for use
Cons: None so far.
Other Thoughts: I used Carbon Copy to image my old 200gb HD to this HD for my '08 MacbookPro. This drive works great! It's very quiet (no clicks) and MORE energy efficient and cooler than the other old but great stock HD in my MBP.
It shows almost the entire 640GB for use, which is much better than other drives that leaves out GBs from the advertised amount!

Good choice for PS3
Pros: Great little drive for upping the HD in my ps3
Cons: none, runs quiet, runs smooth

Swapped out MBP 13.3 160g
Pros: Combo deal with the 750g WD Black made this an awesome deal! Extremely easy swap and the Time Machine software on the MacBook made this too simple. I've noticed no heat, noise or power consumption differences.
Cons: Make sure you have a T6 torx driver before you do the swap! You won't be happy if you do it at 11pm and the smallest torx driver you have is a T8! (The T5-T9 torx driver set was $9.99 at Sears.)
Other Thoughts: Used another of my authorizations on iTunes - be sure to de-authorize iTunes before you swap the drive out!!! After my first hardware upgrade on Mac hardware, I've officially drank the Apple Cool-aide!

Excellent...
Pros: 640gb!, quiet, energy efficient

Installed in 15" Macbook Pro Unibody (Late 2008)
Pros: Great capacity and 2-platter design.
Cons: Louder than the stock Hitachi (320GB) that it replaced. The Hitachi was absolutely silent. There is a noticeable humming from the WD's (640GB) motor from an arm's length away in a quiet room.
Other Thoughts: Duplicated my data using SuperDuper v2.6.2 without any problems. Having installed it yesterday, I haven't noticed any noticeable difference in power consumption or speed yet.

Works great in MacBook Pro
Pros: Big capacity. Reasonably fast. Reasonable power usage. WD quality.
Cons: Not a 7200 rpm 1TB drive :)
Other Thoughts: I put this in a 13.3" MacBook Pro 2.53ghz, all my data transferred right over and the MBP recognized it no problem. WD Blue is good compromise between speed, power usage, and capacity.

So far so good.
Pros: Works! Been running Win7x64 on this thing for about a week in my Gateway, no problems thus far. Runs as cool or cooler than the 5400rpm 320gb gateway it replaced. Actual drive size is 597gb.
Cons: Not bigger? No lowered gb/$ ratio for largest 9.5mm drive
Other Thoughts: Not sure if I'll keep the 640 in here or move it into my ps3... I like the idea of having tons of storage in both. Might end up putting the 320 in my PS3 instead.

Huge disk
Pros: Very high capacity. Working silent in my Dell Precision M4300.
Cons: Slower than my old 320 GB 7200 RPM disk
Other Thoughts: The difference in speed is most noticeable during booting I think it takes 30-50% longer than before and the Virus checker (TrendMicro) make the disk run 100% load for 4-5 minutes after boot.

PS3 Compatible 640GB Drive
Pros: Standard 9.5mm design, low noise, relatively decent price
Cons: 5,400 rpm, not a huge leap over 500gb for the price
Other Thoughts: From the PS3 perspective, I have high hopes for this drive. I don't forsee the spindle speed as being particularly bothersome, as the stock PS3 hard drive was a 5,400rpm drive as well. I held out on buying a 500gb drive in hopes of a 750gb or 1tb drive coming soon, but my little 60gb drive filled up faster than those two could reach the common 9.5mm height. Actual formatted capacity under the PS3 OS is 596gb, with 529gb available following a bone-stock format under firmware 3.01.

750 vs. 640 = 640 wins
Pros: 9.5mm height to fit all common laptop configurations. full 5400rpm spindle speed. dual platter, 320GB per platter areal density. nice and quiet in my 15" uMBP.
Cons: i just wish it were a 1TB, 7200rpm drive with 16MB cache and a low 4ms latency. ;)
Other Thoughts: why does this one win against the 750GB drive for the same price?
superior access times through higher areal density per platter and (to a much lesser extent) the faster spindle speed.
the 750GB drive is 12.5mm high due to it's inclusion of a third platter. 750GB divided by 3 platters equals 250GB per platter.
this 640GB drive is 9.5mm and thus only has 2 platters. 640GB divided by 2 platters equals 320GB per platter.
therefore, the increased areal density of the 640GB drive's platters results in reduced seek times due to reduced drive head movement for both reads and writes. to a lesser extent, the 2 platter configuration also allows for the full 5400rpm spindle speed with less vibration than the 750GB's 5200rpm speed; again, this helps with access times.
if you need the space and have the room, get the 750GB. if you want the faster performing drive and a 500GB drive was enough room, the 640GB drive will give you more performance for the buck.

640GB vs 750GB
Pros: 9.5mm thick
Cons: Not that much bigger than 500GB
Other Thoughts: The 750GB is 3 platter and 12.5mm thick and won't fit in most laptops.
The 640GB is 2 platter and 9.5mm thich and fits in virtually any laptop.
The only manufacturer that has made a 9.5mm 3 platter drive is Samsung. Will they make a 9.5mm 1TB?
