Also chiming in with a failure...
Pros: No complaints while it worked. Average. No frills. And there's nothing wrong with that.
Cons: Died after a year or so of near-continuous use as my main drive. Thankfully, I was able to retrieve most of my important information so this wasn't a catastrophic loss. Another time and place and I might not have been so lucky. :P
Other Thoughts: I haven't really had a hard drive die on me in a long time. This decade, I've retired drives for larger ones long before they've had a chance to peter out. So this took me by surprise.
Of course, I'm willing to consider that those of us who've suffered these failures are the exceptions. Out of over 1,500 reviews, 20% of them are 1-star, and 60% of them are 5-stars. I can't decide if that's good or bad. :P

like others. mine failed
Pros: when it worked it worked great. good price etc.
Cons: drive failed after less than a year of average use. it seems that others have had this hdd fail on them as well. seeing as my roommate has 2 raptors that he has almost constantly ran for the better of 4 years I will probably go with Western Digital next time.
Other Thoughts: Not reliable at all. Given the option of drives out there go with a WD.

Drive Failed 3 Months In
Pros: Online RMA Works Quick. Cost me $15.00 to get drive advanced.
Cons: Drive Failed just like the 2 other Seagate Drives I have ever owned. 1 in a Mac Book Pro, and another 200GB Drive 2 years ago.
These are the only drives that have ever failed me. 3 for 3.
Other Thoughts: I probably will never buy another Seagate Drive again, Western Digitals have never failed me, Maxtors are okay but the 10K RPM drives I got from them overheat like crazy.

Abandoning Seagate
Pros: Cheap and fast when it works.
Cons: Out of five drives, one was DOA, one is really noisy, and two are developing bad sectors only a few months after new. I have kept these drives in an aluminum case desktop case with a 120 mm fan flowing over them in an air conditioned room. The case has not moved since the install. The point is, I have not abused these drives at all. They have not become hot, or have been dropped, or have been fed funky voltages. They just aren't made right.
Other Thoughts: I have bought dozens of Seagate drives over the years and used to swear by them, but after this batch I can't recommend them any more. My 7200.10 drives were reliable and quiet, but these 7200.11 drives have given me a lot of trouble and a lot of data loss. I'm actually on newegg right now looking to buy replacements for these. I don't know what happened to Seagate - seems like their failure rate has really gotten bad recently. Fortunately, they do honor their warranty and their RMA process has been painless (so far). But of course that doesn't help with the hassle, the time, and the loss of data.

JUNK
Pros: Good Price, fast delivery. This is normal for NewEgg.
Cons: Bought 3 of these HDD. All lasted approx 3 months. Suddenly, no warning, they all died on me. Lost everything. NO WARNING!! Replaced with WD. - NO PROBLEMS.
Other Thoughts: Had bought many Seagate HDDs in the past. WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER Seagate in the future. Trashed them all, will not even send them in for replacement. Don't want anymore of their junk. Will continue to buy from NewEgg. Not their fault the manufactor sent them junk.

Pros: Runs smoothly and silently, stores what I need, longevity and reliability as far as I've seen.
Cons: Nothing has gone wrong with any of the ones I've had.
Other Thoughts: I've been building systems with Seagates for over a year, now, and none of them have run into hard drive troubles. Three of those systems, particularly the oldest one, use this particular 500GB, while another uses the 1.5TB version of the 7200.11 series. That's a four out of four perfect record with me. Have no idea why there's a rash of faulty ones in the reviews lately.

Same Unfortunate Story
Pros: Super fast and solid when it worked - made my 5 year old P4 show some "get up and go" for first time in a while.
Cons: Bad sectors showed up about 2 months after installation. Now Seagate said the data is only recoverable if I send it to their recovery service which could run, at a minimum, at least $700. The drive cost me $90. When I initially got online to troubleshoot the failing sectors, the customer service rep who "helped" me was obviously very familiar with the RMA process but failed to mention that based on the diagnosis of the symptoms I presented, there was no point in sending an RMA because the data was unrecoverable. When I spoke again a month later to another CSR, who admitted she had "less technical knowledge" than the other rep, she immediately told me there would be no easy recovery of the drive.
Other Thoughts: All my pictures and music are gone unless I can find someone local to help me out... when you look at more recent posts, the number of Seagate drives that are bricking is increasing. Drives me nuts but I am done with Segate.

Why one might have to use their cell phone
Pros: Worked smashingly until took a dive.
Cons: It took a dive. Only lasted three months. Now there are bad sectors?
Other Thoughts: Wow, it's really sad when you have to use your iPhone to give a review because I am trying to get my data back.

Another Casualty
Pros: Worked great for three months.
Cons: Suddenly and without warning would not be detected by bios.
Other Thoughts: Replaced with WD Caviar Black. Computer works great now. Pretty much rules out other hardware. This was my first Seagate drive I have tried. Will probably be the last. I am sending the drive back to Seagate under warranty, am told I will get a re-conditioned replacement. Sweet.

2 dead
Pros: Seemed quick enough when they were working.
Cons: I ordered 2, had one clicking from the get go, then I had it replaced and 1 year later it is dieing, even seagates seatools won't do anything with this drive... Seagate used to be all that I bought, I guess I'm going to give wd a try again.
Other Thoughts: DON'T BUY THIS DRIVE.

Junk
Pros: none
Cons: Got About 3 mouths Out Of The First One Then It Died RMA It Back To Seagate And Of Course The One They Sent Me Was D.O.A. So Do Yourself A Favor And Stay Away From This Junk Drive And Go Get A Western Digital
Other Thoughts: I Wish Newegg Had A Zero Egg Because That's What Seagate Deserves Worst HD Company Around

Weird, Uncharacteristic of Seagate
Pros: Worked for awhile... Managed to salvage information off failed drive.
Cons: *Purchased* 1/9/08, Died 4/7/09. One day the OS couldn't find 'x:\windows\system' folder and it wouldn't re-format. Reformatting would freeze or error with a loud clicking sound coming from the HDD. Partition allowed me to salvage info.
Other Thoughts: I would also describe the clicking sound as "The Click of Death" It didn't sound good; like no other sound I've ever heard a computer make.

No Longer Buying Seagate
Pros: Worked well for 9 months
Cons: Failed with no warning and the bios no longer detects it. All data on the drive was lost, luckily I just backed up days before. The drive was not even used heavily.
Other Thoughts: Seagate also does not guaranty the security of your data if you RMA a drive. One one page they say they use DOD drive erasure and on another the note that the drive may be shipped overseas for repair and they can not guaranty data security. When a drive is undetectable one cannot erase data.

What Happened Seagate?
Pros: UPDATE TO PREVIOUS POST. There are no PROS to this hard drive. Especially when you hear 'THE CLICK OFF DEATH.' I am very disappointed in Seagate's quality. I'm not wasting my time and money RMA'n it so I'll just eat the cost and go with WD going forward.
Cons: I've had this hard drive for a year now and I'm still waiting to see the final failure notice(s). Some are Error Loading OS, Boot drive not detected, etc. This hard drive in particular is very strange. When I turn off my pc for a while I get the click of death then error messages. If I leave my pc on 24/7 there's no issue with this hard drive.
Other Thoughts: If you want a reliable hard drive chose WD. I own 3 40G WDs that are over 9 years old, runs quietly, and show no signs of quitting. newegg gets 5 eggs from me though. it's not their fault for faulty OEM's.

Fastest Death of HD
Pros: Quiet. Effecient. Standard All Purpose HD.
Cons: Purchased 12/09/08. Died 04/16/09.
Other Thoughts: It started hinting at death with intermittent pauses while surfacing the web. I thought maybe it was drive, decided to restart in case it was just software hanging up my system (I use 3ds max/photoshop heavily). Restarted computer. The computer hung up on shutdown. Powered down. Came back, bios can't find that hd. I am in process of RMA.

Piece of $#!@
Pros: They make good paperweights....
Cons: I bought three of these mid January and put them into a RAID5. The first one died less than 24 hours later. It took me another 3 hours to convince the Seagate tech the drive was dead. The first was replace under warranty. NOW, four months later, a second one died (not the replacement thankfully). As soon as I see 3 hours of open time coming (which should be anytime between now and next July) I'll call Seagate and start jumping through the hoops to get a replacement drive.
Other Thoughts: I have some old (censored) Drives that are about 8 years old and they still work great. I doubt I will buy any more Seagates. A five year warranty on one year drives (Seagate) is not as good as a three year warranty on ten year drives (censored brand name).
Also, when I spoke with the tech about the first drive he said that these particular models were not suited for use in a RAID5 setup.... i.e. they make inferior drives that are sold cheap to people who aren't aware of Seagate's marketing tactics (don't feel bad, they got me!) Maybe the more expensive drives do better, but I don't plan to test them myself.

Pass on Seagate
Pros: Doesn't burst into flames.
Cons: First drive lasted 9 months then died. The RMA replacement lasted 3 months, then died.
Other Thoughts: The third replacement wont be getting vista on it, and I probably wont use it at all since apparently quality standards have loosened a bit over at seagate. btw, the 160 gig WD i use for torrents and random storage space has been rock solid.

1 out of 3 died
Pros: Fast and quiet (at least compared to my RaptorX that sounds like a wood chipper). Over all I have had a good experience with these drives (I bought 3 at the same time). With 3 in a RAID 0 array it is fast! I loved them until one died. Seagate seems to have good tech support, the online RMA website took about 5 minutes to get the forms filled out and mailing lables printed.
Cons: About six months after I get them, one dies of unknown causes. It was working fine, I power down my computer, go to class, get back and when I fire her up I get a RAID failure message. Bios could only find 2 out of 3 of these drives. Also, on post it would list all of my hard drives but for one which was listed as 'unknown device'. Being in a RAID 0 I lost everything on those drives, fortunately I had my OS and work on a separate non-RAID drive and all I lost were games. All of my HDDs are behind a 120mm fan and get decent airflow around them, so I don't think that it was heat.
Other Thoughts: Five eggs untill one died. I will be sending the dead drive to Seagate and getting a new one. At least they have a good warranty and once I looked around their website it was one of the easiest returns ever.

Seagate 500GB
Pros: *Fast *Quiet *Price *Reliability
Cons: None

Make Backups
Pros: Great price. Good performance while it lasted.
Cons: Drive died with no warning after owning it for 10 months. It appears to be due to failure of the read/write circuitry, or firmware. (Not the click of death)
Other Thoughts: At the time I bought this, majority of the reviews mentioned this drive failing. Thanks to them I routinely made backups of my important data.

Price and Performance
Pros: 500gb for a great price. 7200 rpm is enough speed with a nice big 32mb cache. Have 2 running in RAID 1 and very happy with the performance.
Cons: I could always use more GB at a cheaper price.
Other Thoughts: Just buy it.

Seagate quality, good drive
Pros: Seagate drives are generally dependable and worthy of purchase. The performance on this drive seems to be good although I have not benchmarked it specifically.

6 month lifespan
Pros: Guaranteed to hold a buttload of text files.
Cons: I began having stability issues after 6 months with a home-build. The drive failed the short and long self drive test in SEATOOLS, but passed the short and long generic drive tests, and the S.M.A.R.T. test. I backed up data, and reformatted the drive with a fresh install of windows XP. The drive still failed the test, so I am returning it for a replacement. 3/5 eggs for lasting long enough for me to back up all the data.
Other Thoughts: This is still an excellent drive, and well worth the money. I would recommend occasionally examining harddrives with SEATOOLS, especially if your computer has had any unusal errors or slowdowns.

Shutdown->(Two days later)->boot up->not detected
Pros: Quiet. Worked fine while it lasted.
Cons: Died unexpectedly over the weekend. I shut down the drive over this past weekend. When I turned it on again, it would not get detected.
At least make horrible noises to give me warning.
Other Thoughts: Originally inside a Maxtor OneTouch4 external USB drive.
I tried windows and linux on two different computers via a Maxtor OneTouch4 enclosure and linux on one computer via SATA. None of them were able to detect it.
When linux boots up, it will complain about "abnormal status 0x0 on port 0x..."

not good
Pros: was a cheap drive for a mirrored set. 2 500GB drives mirrored.
Cons: I always had issues with booting Vista with these drives mirrored, but did no exactly why.. thought it was driver issues with Vista's updates. Drive died after 5 months. unplugged and Vista booted fast.
Other Thoughts: I am going to send it in to be repaired, but I will replace it with 1TB Samsung drives..

Drives Die
Pros: Good size for price. Fairly fast, when they work.
Cons: I Purchased 3 of these to put in RAID5 and within the first week one of them died. two weeks later i got another from warranty, but after another two weeks a second original died. So i had to wait another 2 weeks for it to be shipped to texas and back. Now all three drives work, but occasionally my RAID believes one of them is disconnected for a couple seconds; then spends a couple days using most of my system resources to rebuild it. This may be the fault of Intel's Matrix RAID though, i've heard it isn't that great.

Well - it died after 4 months
Pros: Was fast when working. Tech support was great and there on Easter Sunday 11am.
Cons: Just like the other comments when it died and became a brick. This one was made after the mess with the flash bios from a couple of months ago. Paid the $19.99 for the expedited shipping and handling.
Other Thoughts: Thanks to the comments on this site I had everything backed up on the old ATA drive. I was using it as external drive in an enclosure. It really saved my backside.

Junk
Pros: Large enough for what I need.
Cons: It bombed on me @ 6 months! No warning. Turned off computer one night, next morning couldn't find OS. It spins up, but not recognized. BIOS can't see it. Has warranty, but would you trust sending a disk overseas without being able to slick.
Other Thoughts: I didn't buy this from Newegg, (Love Newegg, was looking for another HDD), thought I would look at the review on these. Mine came in a brand new computer!

Short Life Span
Pros: Inexpensive, quiet and moderately fast.
Cons: The drive died after using it for the last 4 months. I didn't expect it to last indefinitely, but this is the second drive I've had fail in the last year and a half. I'm RMAing the unit, but I am disappointed the drives don't last very long.
Other Thoughts: If you're going to purchase these, grab two of them and set them up in a RAID 1 configuration, because they're going to fail.

Bought two and one died fairly quickly
Pros: Very quite, 5yr warranty
Cons: 1 out of 2 died within 2yrs
Other Thoughts: I bought two at the time for raid 1 setup, but eventually removed the raid to get more space, that was obviously a mistake. If a hard drive has 5 yr warranty you expect it to be able to work flawlessly at least for 3 out of those 5 yrs this one died in less than two years. Fortunately I was able to get all the data out of it.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS
Pros: First 1 was D.O.A.....clickclickclick.....but Newegg made good on it immediately. The replacement drive is fast, quiet and doesn't run too hot. 5 year warranty. Don't take your data for granted. Backupbackupbackup.
Cons: First 1 was D.O.A
Other Thoughts: A decent drive for a reasonable price. I think it pays to spend a few dollars more to buy a drive with a 5 year warranty.

Died after 7 months
Pros: Great performer, good capacity, good value when purchased. Very quiet.
Cons: Died without warning after 7 months. Fortunately it was in a Raid-5 array so I didn't lose data (yet); unfortunately, there are 3 other drives just like it in the array and I don't feel lucky!
Other Thoughts: Any drive that dies within 3 years is not worth it, no matter how cheap. Have always been with Seagate, but will not look at other brands. Very disappointed.

SMART status bad.....
Pros: Used to have good reputation for having longest warranty in the industry because their drives are reliable.
Cons: Just got a SMART status bad warning upon booting up. Will be backing up my precious files. I bought Seagate because it had good reputation in the past. Can't believe this is happening. I have owned the harddrive for 10 months only. Will be contacting customer support. I hope they'll give me a new drive. I do not wish to have a refurbished drive. Stay away from this model.......

Find Another Drive
Pros: None
Cons: Had this drive for about 8 months. It just stopped working yesterday with no warning. The drive quit working and would not start spinning upon reseting. It would just do the "dreaded clicking sound". I will not buy from Seagate again.

NEVER BUY SEAGATE EVERY AGAIN
Pros: Fast, Quiet, It's a nice big disk drive (while it lasts).
Cons: It's now a DEAD BRICK(wanted to use a different word, but I'll be polite). Seagate knew about a firmware problem that would eventually brick these drives and did too little to let users know that their drives would fail if they didn't download a firmware upgrade. For a short while they did offer a free drive repair (which would recover your drive with data intact) but as of March 9, 2009 they stopped doing this WAY BEFORE ALL OF THE DEFECTIVE DRIVES HAD FAILED OR BEEN FIRMWARE UDATED. Now the rest of us who bought these are out of luck.
Other Thoughts: I told the IT gru at my company about the termination of the free drive repair via firmware update and asked him what he thought of Seagate. He said he would no longer buy any Seagate product for our company if they had that attitude towards their customers.

Do Not Buy This HDD
Pros: none
Cons: This was from the batch that had the firmware bug that Seagate should have recalled. I was a big Seagate fan for a long time, but this changed all that.

Died Suddenly
Pros: Worked great for 6 months. Very fast and quiet.
Cons: Same story as many others here. Turned on computer one morning and the drive was not detected. Dead as a doornail - if it wasn't secured in my computer it would be pushing up daisy's.
Other Thoughts: Just went through Seagates online warranty claim - fairly quick and painless although I'm not very happy about them replacing it with a refurbished drive. I mean c'mon it's only 6 months old. Also, in the last 2 weeks 45% of reviewers here give it 1 or 2 eggs mostly for the same problem. Seagate should make it right with new upgraded drives. I also didn't see any manufactures comments, apologies, explanations etc. with all these bad reviews. I guess that says something about Seagate as a company.

buyer beware
Pros: it worked for 6 months without a problem and was fast. Makes a great paper weight! I'm now switching to a more reliable brand (western digital)
Cons: It died without anywarning, went to turn my comp on and there was nothing. my other 2 drives were detected but not this one. i re-installed o/s on a new Western Digital drive and then plugged the old one back in to see if it would show up anywhere...but it didnt.
Other Thoughts: i checked to see if this was one of the drives affected by seagates firmware problems...wasnt listed...still bricked. I am none too happy@!

Ultimately Died
Pros: Good transfer rates
Cons: Did not care for reviews when bought this one, had useful data on it. I left it running when I went to a trip but died when I returned. I could not recover data on it even using external usb connecter. Turning it back as it has a 5 year warranty. Now I brought a new Western Digital drive and planning to do a RAID this time to safegaurd data.

New Firmware Available
Pros: Large capacity, fast for its speed. Seagate is trying to help.
Cons: There is the problem that people have where their drives stop working, or at least don't recognize the data on them. There is a new firmware out by Seagate to address this problem. Go to their website to download the ISO to make a bootable disk for it.
Other Thoughts: It is annoying to have to update firmware for a hard drive because of the risk of bricking it, but if it solves the problem people are having... it is worth it.

Died suddenly
Pros: Seagate Barracuda. SATA...
Cons: Seagate used to be good. Now not so sure. Died suddenly. Maybe Seagate hasn't figured out this SATA thing yet. Owned for 3 months. Used probably less than 300 hours. Great MTBF stats, NOT!

I was wrong
Pros: 32mb cache, fast fast fast!Raid-O with no problems related to this drive!
Cons: I wrote a bad review, Comp kept locking up and hard drives making strange sound when it happened... I will be a man tho and admit I jumped the gun. It was not these drives problem! They are working fine and are still fast and I didnt have to RMA, give or take I am not even 1 month in yet so I can not speak for the long run but they are working and are very fast so I am so sorry I wrote a bad review on them.
Other Thoughts: Come to find out it was my CPU being overclocked causeing the problem. the sound I heard from the hard drives I can only guess was the drives stalling when the system hung while they was pulling data. I am so sorry I contributed to the scare factor going on with these drives. They are running great for now and are fast and my raid array is alive and kicking. I just hope they last me. I have owned seagate in the past but it has been years and years. I usualy use WD but wanted to try seagate again with my new build. I am sorry if my other review scared anyone away from buying this drive. But many others are having problems and under the circumstances I assumed it was the drive and not my Brand new cpu that apeard to be stable. Sorry Seagate and sorry newegg. I am a man and will admit I was wrong. 5 stars so far and I like these drives alot.

consistant anyhow
Pros: quiet, fast worked great! Windows 7 worked fine with it and showed great numbers in performance ratings.
The replacement drive is now on the way, yea!
Cons: lasted 3 months, and I have to laugh after reading reviews. Mine died exactly like many said. We used it about 2 am and in morning it was dead as can be---boot device......not found... Nothing ever again even using usb adapter etc. to read.
Other Thoughts: RMA was easy and quick. It appears that replacement drive is a 16 meg cache vs the 32 the dead one had. I did buy the model FOR the CACHE size so in that I am disappointed. It seems wrong to replace with lesser product--but If it works longer I guess that would make it a better product even if spec inferior!

Ran great when it worked...
Pros: This drive ran fast and quiet when it was working.
Cons: Had to install the firmware fix, to version SD1A. Got the 7200.11 (500gb) model; came w/ firmware version SD15. It died after 4 months of use. Had S.M.A.R.T. turned on in BIOS. It worked until one night, then system crashed the next morning and couldn't find boot device on restart. S.M.A.R.T. reported the drive's status as BAD. First bootup after the crash experienced _extremely_ slow access. Follow-on bootups would either fail to find some Windows file or simply not get past the Windows bootup screen.

Failure after 2 months
Pros: Great drive while it works.
Cons: Absolutely died OVERNIGHT (Went to bed at 3 in the morning after using my computer, woke up at 10 and it didn't work). Ive tried plugging it into different computers, it just doesn't get recognized.
Other Thoughts: I should have paid attention to the other reviewers with problems.

Worked well...then crashed
Pros: Relatively quiet, seemed quick, and dirt cheap. I have the 7200.11 version.
Cons: After about 3 months of flawless running the drive started flaking out; came home from work one day and my system was crashed. When I reset it the motherboard couldn't detect the drive. I turned it off for a while and it booted once again...but that's it. Won't detect now. Sending it back to repair now...
Other Thoughts: I see other people have had problems with crashing, too.

RETURNED
Pros: Pros would be I bought 4 of these drives for a build that is on raid 10 and I bought 4 of the same drives but Western Digital on another build that has a raid 0. Once of these seagate drives crashed, broke down. Just got info to return to seagate. I have always been a western digital fan but bought these to save a little money for a friend that was already spending over 1600 for a system I just put together for him.
Cons: wish I bought W.D and not tried to save a few dollars.
Other Thoughts: I will stay with western digital although I know W.D has problems also but W.D has had less problems for me that seagate. I find seagate's drives seem to not be as quite as W.D. just my 2cents for you.

Crashed!
Pros: Worked pretty well for a while. Cheap.
Cons: After 3 months of flawless use my drive crashed. No reason at all, i can't even get into windows because this thing is shot to hell. Now i hear that the .11 series of Seagate has a pretty high rate of failure.
There is supposed to be a fix for it, but i should NEVER have to fix a drive I have barely owned. Its a darned shame, Seagate isn't a bad brand, but I guess i just got really unlucky
Other Thoughts: Hopefully I can recover some of my data or something, but at the very least I expect a brand new drive that doesn't have a tendency to spontaneously blow up.

bit twice by the firmware bug
Pros: large capacity, impressively quiet, nice price
Cons: As others have noted, this drive had a firmware bug which caused a high rate of failure. I bought three of these (one on 9/11/08 and two on 10/1/08). The latter two failed within a few months after very light use. The first one seems to be fine, but I just updated the firmware anyway. Seagate's firmware update will prevent a drive from failing, but it won't resurrect a dead one. Time for another RMA.

sorry seagate
Pros: Worked good at first
Cons: 3 days after install in a HTPC it started making a popping noise. Sounded like it was trying to access data, but noisy.
Other Thoughts: I found out later these drives had big issues.........now I'm back to WD drives. I did install the Seagate firmware fix, but I don't feel I have to fix a drive I just purchased. Shame on you Seagate for letting this drive out on the public.

I've had good luck with them
Pros: Han't had one fail Large size good speed large cache Long warrenty
Cons: Other reviews list a high falure rate Drives over 350 GB tend to be extremely flaky
Other Thoughts: I've always had good luck with this brand, others have talked about the high DOA and falure rate and those are accurate, Drives over 350GB all have this problem right now, but for the price and size I was willing to risk it. So far my original drive has held out well as a data archive / server for my network and I have just purchased a second one.
Their is a drive speed limiting jumper on the back, If you pull this jumper it increases your speed drastically If you pull this jumper it lowers your drive lifespan drastically your choice , people I know have removed this pin and gotten massive performance increases, lasting roughly a month then the drive has dies a horrible screeching death. Therefor it's best to think of it as a lower speed sata, not quite sata, not quite ide, I get 60MB a second actual speed between two of these internally and that's good enough for my archive.

For what is's worth
Pros: Inexpensive, fast, got them from NewEgg I have been running a couple of them for over 4 months now and not even a sneeze. I originally was going to put them in a RAID but just started filling them up with stuff and now am going to buy a couple more.
Cons: None so far.
Other Thoughts: I have been building computers for about 10 years, as a hobbie. You know friends and family. Have probably used almost all brands of drives, Maxtor, Conner, WD, Seagate, IBM, Hitachi, Fujitsu and Samsung and even some Generic drives that didn't have a name. (it was an experiment in being cheap) The only drives that I have had more than one failure with were the WD and Generic. The WD drives lasted several years and the Generic even made it 2-3 years. I have only had 1 Maxtor drive fail & I think I killed it myself by mistake (but Maxtor replaced it ). I guess you get a good one or a bad one. If you look, about all of these drives have a 95%+ success rate. But I have found if you try to go cheap, you usually get cheap. Have a nice day.

3 drives - 2 failures - Not recommended
Pros: 500gb, 32mb cache, 5 (or now 3) year warranty
Cons: I bought 1 drive, then added a 2nd for RAID 0. Within 2 weeks, the second drive failed. Newegg has great return policy so I got a replacement drive for free.
The replacement drive worked, but only for 4 months. It died too, and now I have to ship the drive directly to Seagate because Newegg's HD policy is only 30 days (meaning I have to pay for shipping to Seagate).
I wouldn't recommend Seagate at this time. The 7200.11 drives apparently have a firmware issue that hasn't been resolved yet. Even with a 5 year warranty, what's the point if I have to pay $15 to ship it back to Seagate within 4 months? Just pay the $10-15 extra for a different brand. The hassle isn't worth it.
Other Thoughts: 2 out of 3 drives dying? Come on, give me a break...

i hate this model
Pros: Fast, and the name can be so attractive, BARRACUDA and SEAGATE
Cons: The dam thing broke after 2 months, it was not recognized at boot, now i have 3 weeks waiting for the return of my replacement drive, the status page says "In Process", and phone support is not that sexy.
Other Thoughts: One word: Western Digital

Do the Firmware Update, if needed
Pros: I did a fresh load Win XP on this new SATA hard drive after many years on an EIDE WD 250 GB. Even though my controller only does SATA 1.5 Gb/sec transfer, I can tell that it has much faster activity in Win XP. I know that a fresh load of Windows after a few years of use is a natural performance boost but not this much.
Cons: My ST3500320AS had the old “SD15” firmware revision, which needed updating to "SD1A."
Other Thoughts: Many thanks to “TripmasterG” (see his customer review) for discussing the needed firmware update shown on the Seagate website. I finally got around to updating today after installing the drive on January 2, 2009. Fortunately, my drive didn’t “brick” itself.

not even 2 weeks later...
Pros: its fast when it wants to work.... looks like a quality drive but....
Cons: 1 of the 2 or possibly even both are going out on me! random system freezes and hard drive makes realy strange sound when it happens. Locks up, Have to hard boot. 2 of these running Raid-o in my brand new system I built. So sad, I read the reviews on this drive.. I knew it was a rsik. I wanted to give seagate another shot tho. Looks like a bad Idea!
Other Thoughts: the western digital 32mb cache drives are getting alot better reviews and are good performing as well. Until seagate gets this sudden lack of quality control under control, you might want to hold off on this drive. Sadly newegg no refund my drives not even 2 weeks old... replace only :(

Brick - Sounds Like a Familiar Story
Pros: Cache seems to make a difference... Upgraded from a 7200.7 @80GB to 7200.11 @500GB. Massive size, easy to ghost data over from old drive once you understand the process. NewEgg was very easy to work with, shipped fast.
Cons: After about 2 months of operation, drive would still spin fine but BIOS would not recognize. Seagate customer service (by chat) was quite impatient with me, talked to me like I was a moron when I felt I was asking reasonable questions ("what's wrong with the drive? Is it just bad sectors?") Evidently they had done multiple RMAs and sent me to the link to complete one in a hurry. I got it this week and it's a refurbished model, I bought an OEM originally and not a refurb. I at least have bad sectors at this point... hope to recover my data and have bought a bigger external drive for backup.
Other Thoughts: Win XP Pro SP3 2.5GB RAM ------------------ I have seen much better reviews and reliability ratings for some of the WD and Hitachi drives, will probably sell the refurb after I recover my data and back it up.

Died after 2 months
Pros: Ran OK for 2 months before it died.
Cons: I bought this drive back in Jan for a Linux box I built. It ran fine for 2 months but last night it died. Now the machine won't even boot. I get "Bad sector", Disk read" and "Disk write" errors.

Major QA Issues at Seagate
Pros: Fast, quiet, cool. That's about it.
Cons: This series of drives has some major QA issues with the 7200.11 series drives. The first pair of these drives that I ordered failed after a few weeks, spitting out SMART errors. I had to RMA with Seagate (Was past the 30 day Newegg warranty). I got two new (Refurb/Recert) drives, same model. They ran for about a month, when one of the drives started to make a high-pitched whining noise. It would go away if I gently tapped the drive, but it kept coming back after a few minutes, or a few hours. Then a few days later, it just died.
Other Thoughts: I'm not buying any more Seagate drives until they can prove they've improved their QA. Amazingly I wasn't hit with the firmware bug (The drives from RMA still had the old firmware). They issued a firmware that bricked all of the 500GB 32mb cache models. And I have suffered two completely different failures, separate from the firmware debacle. I ordered two WD Black drives instead, so I'll have to see how that goes.

DO NOT BUY THIS HARD DRIVE
Pros: looks cool?
Cons: I've had this drive for about 3 months and windows is saying it is failing. I will NEVER buy Segate again!
Other Thoughts: do your self a faver and buy WD HDDs and stay away from Seagate junk.

bricks of fury
Pros: I got to test my backup strategy due to these failing drives.
Cons: These drives have some serious issues. I purchased three drives to have all of them fail with media errors. I received an RMA replacement which has also died (4th drive). The longest uptime was 54 days. For reference I upgraded the drive firmware to SD1A and used these drives as an upgrade for my RAID server which is about 4 years old. Drive temps are around 32C so that is not the problem.
Other Thoughts: Don't buy these drives. I have a seagate 7000.10 which is over a year old and it is working fine (except it runs hot). I don't know what happened to seagate. I am not in the mood to RMA the other drives since there is a good chance I will receive another pile of junk.

Firmware Issue ST3500320AS 500gb
Pros: None- Big disappointment and waste of time.
Cons: Firmware Issue-kept crashing my system under Leopard 10.5.5. Seagate's tech support is now awful. Waited 1/2 hour twice, gave up. Then bit the bullet and waited an hour to get through to tech support who couldn't solve the issue. Also, Info on partitioning and formatting under osx is also incomplete on Seagate's website.
I was an avid, loyal Seagate customer for 10+ years, never saw their tech support this bad.
I am finished with Seagate. MB
Other Thoughts: I consider myself to be high level tech who sometimes gets stumped and looks to Seagate tech support to contribute some intelligent and useful information. I have 19 other Seagate drives that are fine across 5 other systems. Didn't have any problems with those drives until now with this one.
I am Very disappointed with Seagate's tech support. Up until recently I thought they were the best and offered a 5-year warranty on their drives, now it is a 3-year warranty. Very long wait times, if you can even get through to tech support, then the quality of their support has been very poor.

RAIDtastic
Pros: Excellent performance and capacity for the price. 32MB cache helps.
Cons: There have been firmware issues witht his model, but they have been fixed and it is NOT an issue anymore.
Other Thoughts: I have 2 in a RAID-0. They average read thoughput at 180 MB/s. THey run rather cool as well.
Core i7 920, ASUS P6T Delux, OCZ DDR3 1600 Platinum, EVGA GTX 295, CoolerMaster ATCS 840, Cooler Master V8 cooler, 2xthis HDD RAID-0, XIGMATEC 750 watt PSU, Vista64 SP1

Mine died as well plus it was damaged in shipping
Pros: fast drive
Cons: Mine died only after a few months as well plus it was damaged in shipping.
Other Thoughts: Mine died as well, when troubleshooting I found it was damaged in shipping but it did not become apparent until I had an issue with my RAID1 drive. When I went to trouble shoot the SATA data connection on the HD broke off without any effort. Upon further inspection the area is cracked around it. Connection went on easily when installed, first time removing connector. Newegg ships the drives in bubble wrap out of the box. Seagate web site states that they need to be shipped in foam. I was supprised by this. Also Seagate HD usually come with a Seagate tools CD. Since these drives were shipped out of the box it was not included. Simple deduction would suggest that Newegg staff dropped or broke this drive which cracked the plastic conneciton just enough to fail some time after use. Now instead of having a new drive I will get a refurbished drive from seagate. No wonder why newegg includes the seagate contact info for the warranty in their invoice.

Jumper Why?
Pros: Seagate 5 year warranty. Fast drive, great performance. Windows 7 scored it at a 6.0
Cons: Seagate SATA II (3.0 Gb) drives have a jumper that limits them to SATA I (1.5 Gb) performance.
Unless using an older board or SATA I controller make sure to remove the jumper to get max performance.
Other Thoughts: Runs cool and quite and fast.

excellent
Pros: Seagate drives have always performed well for me, this one is no exception. Ultra fast compared to the equivalent Western Digital drive.
Cons: runs hot ... then again it is spinning at 7200RPM
Other Thoughts: wish Seagate will put this drive back onto their 5-year warranty program :(

Died after 5 months
Pros: Fast, inexpensive.
Cons: Died after 5 months.
Other Thoughts: Unfortunately, mine died too. Until then, it was great. Had it lasted 6 months, I would have given it 2 stars. ;-)
Luckily, I had it mirrored to an identical drive and didn't lose any data. I don't know if I have 5 minutes or 5 more months before the second drive goes, so I'm going to get a replacement asap.

Pros: Good fast drives. Haven't failed, have one with the "bad" SD15 firmware thats been running since Oct.
Cons: Just bought another recently and it is ALOT louder then my other 500GB 7200.11
Other Thoughts: Don't forget to register your drives :D

Pros: Worked fine while it did
Cons: Like other reviewers are saying, this drive failed about 3 months after I bought it. Bios won't even detect it. Save yourself the trouble and buy a WD drive.

Another dead 7200.11
Pros: Worked fine and quiet... for 2.5 months
Cons: Died suddenly, BIOS no longer recognizing the drive. I wish I had read some of the online reviews on this model before ordering it. A whole batch of these drives have serious problems with the firmware and I'd stay away...
Other Thoughts: Since this is an OEM model, Seagate will most likely not service the warranty. Now trying to figure out how to recover 400GB of data...

BAD HARD DRIVE
Pros: None.
Cons: Drive was installed in a standard desktop system. Nothing crazy at all. Failed after 2 months. Computer does not see the hard drive at all. Pulled it out and hooked it up in two different external drives to confirm problem. Drives receives power and spins, but makes no communication with computer at all.
Other Thoughts: This is the 3rd Seagate drive I have had to return. Do yourself a favor, buy Western Digital. I've yet to have a WD drive fail.
