ZIPPO - Advance and novice alike
Pros: For advance users if you are the tinkering type. Running Linux LINK8890 2.6.30-2-orion5x #1 Sat Nov 7 00:42:42 UTC 2009 armv5tel GNU/Linux.
Cons: The fan should be a little stronger and quieter.
Other Thoughts: Just OK for novice who just want to have a raid capable storage.

Very Nice.
Pros: Used the fun_plug extension to turn on SSH access. Installed my own bittorrent client (transmission), as the one that comes with it has some problems. 2x 1.5 TB drives in Raid 0. No Problems so far.
Cons: The out-of-box group management is klunky, but works.
Other Thoughts: The ability to put your own software on this box due to the root SSH access makes this one of the most useful devices i have. I dont have to rely on firmware updates to fix problems, i can just install the open source software that i like and disable the out of box stuff. This capability alone is enough to give it a 5 egg rating.

Yep Still the best
Pros: purchased my 1st about 1.5 yrs ago (newegg.com of course) and I loved it. after all this time the DNS-323 is still the best bang 4 the buck. being restricted physically i need a simple yet proficient & trustworthy way of storing everything from my network systems. The DNS-323 is still the best option 4 the money. Slapped 2 1.5 TB drives in, plugged in to the network then went 2 sleep. That was it all done.
Cons: Doesnt have a 10 GB network yet stiil only 1 Gigabit net..
Other Thoughts: Wondr what the week end newegg deals are? I better go look..

File Permissions Problem
Pros: Setup is simple and so is the interface
Cons: Problem the file permissions get set to values not desired (“Owner”, “User” and “all user” permissions) and there is no way to recover the affected files Result the files are no longer accessible and the “User” and “all user” permissions are set to not accessible therefore the files are rendered useless. (Deficiency) There are is no procedures to set file permissions and there is no way to fix file permissions. File permissions are not compatible with windows fie permissions...
Other Thoughts: D- Link support rating would have to be poor to non existent. While they are accessible they have no expertise or knowledge of the device it’s as though they are reading from a paper or (Computer screen) they know nothing of the products D-Link could hire a 6 year old kid to do the same technical support job that is being done. The Netgear RND2xxxx System Network Storage systems seam to have overcome all of these deficiencies.

Cheap, you get what you pay for
Pros: DNS-323 is cheap, but as others have mentioned, it is based on free GPL software. It also is relatively small and doesnt' take too much room on the desk.
Cons: Where to begin...
1. The unit will reformant the WRONG drive if you're not careful. Worse, it won't tell you it reformats the wrong drive and it will be impossible to recover if you don't have another backup.
2. Drives that are in DNS-323 will die suprisingly fast. Out of 5 WD10EADS drives that I bought 2 that were in DNS-323 died and had to be RMAed. Other 3 drives, that are not in DNS-323, work perfectly until this day.
3. You need to purchase another external drive to keep backup of what you have on DNS-323
Other Thoughts: I would certainly not recommend this product to others. I can't see the purpose in the NAS (network attached storage) when it doesn't store the data. The bug with erasing a wrong drive is unacceptable.

Average quality
Pros: The box is somewhat sturdy and design is not bad Web based interface easy to navigate and well made It serves it's natives purposes of sharing and backup pretty well, Bittorrent client works well
Cons: The information available from D-Link is minimalistic no how-to the functions of the unit are very briefly described. Sometimes the web interface seem to bug showing a message like if there are no connection FTP is awkward, itune server lag and media server must lag too
Other Thoughts: Use this as a RAID Storage and bittorrent server and you will be happy
PS:the core of this unit is Linux so filesystem is not NTFS nor FAT32 do not think you can simply put 2 identical HDrive with your stuff on them and find your files intact. >This NAS will format your data to it's native fileformat but at least it will WARN you

Nice
Pros: First thing I did was hack the little box so I can get into the Linux innards. With a little modding it can be SSH'ed to and you can setup scripts to rsync from one drive to the other nightly with crontab, setup transmission (torrent client) so all you do is drop the torrent files to a folder and it will "pick it up", and many other useful things.
Cons: The biggest complaint is the confusion on the hard drives and it formatting the wrong drive. Supports only up to 1.5TB HDD's.
Other Thoughts: First update the firmware before you put data on the HDD's. IMPORTANT: Disk 1 goes in the RIGHT HAND SIDE. Disk 2 goes in the LEFT hand side. There are tons of tutorials on internet for this guy. Read before you play is my best advice. This will save you from doing something in haste and loose your data. If you like Linux then your going to LOVE this.

Not for Advanced Users
Pros: OK...this NAS is Excellent for BASIC HOME USERS. I have no problems with the web interface. The Unit itself is very quiet and somewhat energy efficient.
Cons: EXT2 File System-Not bad, but not good. This unit failed on me after 30 days. The inline(stupid) power adapter failed and took the whole thing with it after a month and a half. If you do use this device make sure that you get an extended warranty and RAID 1 your drives. Firmware version 1.5 is buggy and drives will dropout once in a while and require a reset.
Other Thoughts: Data transfer on a gigabit network will average 10-15 MB/s. For those of you that are advanced users DO NOT BUY. Build a whitebox with a large amount of storage and use FreeNAS. I may have gotten a bad egg and have nothing against D-Link, but they do not have a very high quality solution with this device, but i did not expect that much. This is an inexpesive solution. IMO spend the money on a good NAS and eat the cost on something that will last.
