Rating + 5 Work Great!

Pros: Easy to setup, not sure why someone else made it sound like a nightmare..? I had it all hooked up and my 3 PC and 1 wireless laptop running off it in about 20 minutes. The wireless has a bit more signal strength than the Westell 327W it replaced. It also seems to run cooler than the old Westell. I'm happy with it.

Cons: The indicator lights and labels on the face are a little smaller than I would like, it is a little difficult to read what light was for what, but after a day or two I knew what they all were anyway.

Other Thoughts: I would rather have Blue lighted symbols, but hey greenish/yellow will work.
Try and buy it while on sale... I don't know if I would have paid full price for it, but since it is not just a router, but a DSL modem combined I think it is still a reasonable price.

Rating + 5 DSL-2640B

Pros: Small footprint, more options than my 2wire2700HG-B seems to have better wireless range. I bought this modem to replace the above 2wire that was dropping my connection alot. I called ATT and they said my modem had no warranty as it was 2yrs old. They would gladly sell me another. I passed. This thing seems way faster than the 2wire. I can download alot faster. I think the att 2wire modem had some kind firmware installed to bounce you for to many shared connections. I also installed the UK4.0 firmware.

Cons: Does seem to get hot but I mounted it up on the wall where it gets airflow. One year warranty.

Other Thoughts: For the money it seems to be a good purchase. Time will tell

Rating + 1 Could not get it to work

Pros: None to report as I never got it working. Theoretically, a combined modem/router/wireless hub.

Cons: Impossible to set up. Crazy options I've never seen before on a router interface. Really annoying wizard setup interface.

Other Thoughts: Back it goes. I spent all day bouncing back and forth between D-Link and Verizon tech support. Each of them swearing it looked fine from their end and the problem lay with the other company. I am tearing my hear out. Verizon is sending me one of their Westell modems now to replace -- not my first choice but they can get it working for me so, fine.

Pros: This modem/router is exactly what you want if you have AT&T DSL.
The connection was a bit difficult but the guys at D-LINK came through with outstanding support.
AT&T wanted $100.00 to help with the connection. (SHAME)
And newegg got my order here in 3 days as promised.
GREAT PRODUCT: D-LINK.
GREAT SERVICE: newegg.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Have your user name and password ready, and you will be surfing the net in no time.

Rating + 5 The best router I've used yet

Pros: Open-source software onboard! Sweet. Great wireless range, built-in security, built-in DSL router, excellent speed, aesthetically pleasing (better than an ugly black box).

Cons: DSL settings (username, password, etc) are in the WAN tab in the config. I wasn't looking for it there, I was expecting it to be in its own tab.

Other Thoughts: I haven't had any experience with dlink before. I'll be buying from them more often.

Rating + 5 Just as expected

Pros: Easy to set up with ATT in Texas, only typed the password wrong and had to use the reset button to clear the extra one. The settings were already in the modem and it connected instantly. The item actually arrived in two days also.

Cons: None really, but the help file formerly found in this brand is not included in the web access, and some of the settings take looking for, to find.

Other Thoughts: Does seem kind of warm, but it works fine. I would recommend this product to anyone that needs an item such as this.

Pros: Easy to setup with UK version. Works great with A&T (3Mbit/sec service).

Cons: US firmware is a bad joke. Go to UK DLink site and grub UK version. It has many more features and is much easier to manage.

Rating + 1 Technical Service is Incompetent

Pros: None - unless you count the fact that I was allowed to return the product to the store where I had purchased it.

Cons: The Wireless Router part of the product didn't work, and working with the technical service department to try and solve it was not only unsuccessful, but was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. The phone menu system took forever to navigate, and required you to listen to lengthy messages regarding the limited warrenty of the product you bought earlier that day. The process required multiple phone calls, and the second service tech did not listen to a word I told her about what had been done so far to solve the problem. I finally gave up when she told me that I had to call the computer manufacturer to find out how to disable the firewall. It was a work computer, and we are not allowed to disable the firewall. The technician just argued with me that I had to do this in order for her to help me, until I finally told her that if I had to do this to make her product work, then the product was useless to me.

Rating + 5 great product & service

Pros: setup is fairly easy (with at&t DSL) -- most initial settings can be done by choosing the auto steps/settings.
Looks simple and sleek; minimizes wires since it is a router/modem combo.
Love the product!

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Not necessarily just for D-link -- I always put routers on a elevated frame to allow more air flow around the box. Hence it stays mildly warm over long usage.

Rating + 5 the router that Verizon should be shipping

Pros: Setup with Verizon DSL using auto setup. Just had to enter password. A cinch to setup. Took all of 7 minutes to get online from unboxing.

Cons: Stock firmware GUI is HORRIBLE and leaves very basic functions. There is no static DHCP available which I needed and port forwarding is horrible.

Other Thoughts: First thing I did was update the firmware to the UK firmware found on dlink.co.uk website. It gives you many more options AND it's intuitive compare to the US firmware.
This router replaced the horrible Verizon Westell 327W router and the westell 6100 that I used after the 327W died.

I should've gotten this router earlier.

Rating + 5 Best DSL Modem

Pros: Works wonderfully! Works with AT@T DSL and the best part is if you have one of those 2Wire boxes it fixes your disconnects for World Of Warcraft. This is the best Modem period.

Cons: Runs hot, but just suspend it with something like 2 bricks or something and the heat is gone and runs safe.

Rating + 5 Works well with AT&T Yahoo

Pros: + Price
+ Quality
+ Ease of setup (AT&T Yahoo) via "Wizard"
+ Ease setting up Wireless connection
+ Speed
+ Security
+ Onboard Router

Cons: - Heat
- Documentation could be better

Other Thoughts: In researching the D-Link DSL-2640B, I have seen a lot of cons in regards to this gateway, particularly in setting up wireless connectivity. The documentation is written more towards those that have a knowledge of modems and establishing wireless connections. That said, I had everything set up w/in less than 45 minutes (including time to skim thru the manual on the CD). I have to admit, had I not been thru all of this before I wouldn't have had a pleasant experience setting up the wireless access. However, experience did make it fairly easy. Speed seems to be consistently good. The main drawback to the hardware itself is that it gets quite hot. I've put some ceramic tiles between it and the wood shelf it sits on. This is definitely one you'll want good air flow around. I'm pleased with this gateway, would recommend it to those with some knowledge of setting up modems and establishing LAN and wireless connections. Newbies might want to look stick with the modem from their ISP.

Rating + 4 Good 2Wire replacement

Pros: Bought this to replace my 2Wire from AT&T because it kept dropping my DSL connection when running torrents. Figured it was MAYBE my connection, but after getting the D-Link up and running my problems were eliminated after getting this set up. Speaking of setting up, it was fairly easy. Took me about 15 minutes.

Cons: Wi-Fi range seems to be shorter, but that's probably because it's not in the middle of my house, where my 2Wire was.

Rating + 4 working great with new MAC and PC

Pros: Read a lot of reviews about a good combo modem/router to work with MACs and about 1/2 said this worked great with it. I summed that up to those 1/2 being the ones who has the time/patience to set it up properly.

I did that and this thing works fantastic! My MAC and my wifes HP laptop both get blazing signals all throughout the house.

Great price!
Runs cool - warm (not hot)
quiet

Cons: takes a while to setup with MAC

Rating + 5 Great DSL Modem

Pros: Easy setup (need to know your current DSL account settings), works with Qwest DSL. Great options during configuration with "admin". 4 LAN ports and Wireless option!

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: I had been using a modem from Qwest for years and finally purchased my own. You do need to know your current DSL settings (account login/pswd, DNS pri/sec if used, etc). I had this setup and running in 15min.

Rating + 4 Newbie Friendly

Pros: I have AT&T DSL Basic and this modem connected to the net quite easily once I had all the information from my ISP. (It took me a few hours to get it going, though that may be due to a learning curve.) Wireless was pretty simple to set up, and the connections are running at great speeds. The wizard was fairly decent, though some default settings did need to be changed.

Great Service from NewEgg, product showed up 3 (business) days after order.

Cons: Does run fairly hot, but there is a convenient on/off switch that can be utilized when it's not in use.

Other Thoughts: I know most savvy users will laugh at this, but for those who do not know, when connecting using PPPoE (google the term if necessary) you need to provide a username and password that AT&T (or other ISP) has provided for you. Should be something like 'username@att.net'. If you don't have that before setup, your installation will be frustrating.
Good luck!

Pros: range, speed, auto configures all the settings for dsl, maybe even 2% or so faster than ISP's modem.

Cons: gets hot which means limited lifespan, some knowledge is needed but the auto settings picked up were correct. works with standard adsl ( i dont think i have adsl2, but still works )

Other Thoughts: Pings are about 15-20ms from pc to a speed test server 150miles away. Connected wirelessly. But thats more with isp than modem. I havent tried any console or pc online gaming yet.....

Rating + 4 It works very well

Pros: Nice design, very compact, and efficient since it combines the modem, router and wireless functions in one unit. Used it to replace a dead encore modem and a Linksys wireless router. Set up was very easy via ATT/ Bellsouth DSL. Unit automatically detected settings. The only thing required from me to set up was putting in my user name and password and setting up the security settings on the WLAN. Took about 10 minutes tops. Shipping was as advertised at 3 days. Have only had for 2 days but it is working very well

Cons: I have 2 cons right now which is why only 4 eggs instead off 5. First the modem, as others have already stated seems to run hot. If I were sitting it flat on a desk or other surface I would be worried. However, I have it suspended under a desk with cable ties so it is open to cooling, even though it still runs a bit warm. I've decided to just turn it off when not in use. It's nice that it has an on/off switch. Second con is that the wireless strength is not quite as strong as my Linksys wireless router. However, the Linksys router had two larger antennas compared to the smaller one antenna on this unit. Still the modem is on second floor underneath a desk and the lowest my laptop will register is a "very good" setting on the signal strength. So it is more than adequate just not as strong as the Linksys router which always read "excellent" on the laptop.

Other Thoughts: Neither of the two cons would deter me from buying it again. It combines 3 functions in one, it was easy to set up and it has m adequate WLAN strength in my house. I am sure I could improve the strength if it was sitting on top of my desk instead of underneath but it is more convenient for me there. Buy it you will be pleased.

Rating + 4 Works with QWEST

Pros: Faster than QWEST Actiontec GT-701-WG. Both ethernet and wireless.

Cons: Needs manual setup to work with QWEST DSL. If you want an easy setup this is not for you, the supplied disk not do it .

Other Thoughts: Should have a cooling fan, I am adding one. The Actiontec ran pretty hot also and began to drop connection. The wireless signal reads at 11MBPS(set at 802-11b) but is faster than the Actiontec at 54MBPS.

Rating + 5 CenturyTel users READ HERE

Pros: First of all, this is yet another outstanding D-link product!

Now, on to business. When I ran the configuration with CenturyTel (Missouri), the following was detected:

VPI: 8 VCI: 35 Category: UBR Protocol: PPPoA.

For me, although PPPoA must be supported in some for or fashion by CenturyTel (since I could at least get online with it), it was not correct for my configuration. I could connect to some websites, but couldn't connect to sites like microsoft/msn or mcafee UNTIL I changed the protocol from PPPoA to PPPoE and the problems vanished (My old DI-614+ was also connected using PPPoE).

Hope that helps someone out there.

Cons: None so far. To clarify, neither the DSL-2640B nor the ISP was at fault for selecting PPPoA versus PPPoE. As an aside, much to the router's credit, I was able to connect to the ISP in some form using PPPoA!

Rating + 1 D-Link 2640B for ATT DSL

Pros: The modem/router now works on 1 wired computer (Vista x64 if that is of use to anyone)

Cons: None of my other 5 computers/laptops (XP 32bit) will work properly with the modem/router wired or wireless. They can each connect to the modem/router's page, but cannot recieve internet connection. They each say Connected for their internet access (for both wired and wireless) and the connection page shows they have sent and recieved packets over the connection. D-Link customer service was available, but was of little to no help.

Other Thoughts: The product is a replacement for a dying SpeedStream 5100 modem with a Linksys WRT54g router set up. I did not see any faster connectivety using this new modem/router compared to my old set up. The product might be defective, but I don't know if I can go without any internet for the 2 weeks+ time it would take to RMA this product.

Rating + 5 Worked well with AT&T DSL

Pros: On/Off Button, Wireless signal was an improvement of my previous AT&T 2wire modem/router, Worked immediately with my AT&T DSL service

Cons: At first I was confused how to sign into the router. There are default usernames and passwords which are in the instructions but I read right past them without realizing that is what they were so it took ten minutes for me to figure out how to get into the router.

Other Thoughts: I got this after my second AT&T 2Wire Modem/Router (that comes with the DSL service) broke. The differences with the AT&T 2Wire one seem to be that this has an external antenna (probably why it provides a better signal) and is a lot nicer looking in my opinion. One router I was going to buy had said that it only worked in certain states (probably because it only worked with those regional DSL services) so if it is relevant I am located in Connecticut.

Pros: Got this gateway for my parents, just set it up and it works like a charm (in fact, connected to the internet through right now while writing this review). Setup was pretty straight forward (SEE OTHER THOUGHTS). Connected through AT&T.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: The firmware this thing shipping with was not so great. I highly recommend upgrading to the European 4.0 verson firmware (google it), and be sure to update in the order directed. When setting up your connection through the wizard, for country select "Other" and provider select "Other." It still auto-detected my settings. I didn't have to provide anything other then the DSL account name and password. Very happy with it so far. Bear in mind it does run a little warm so keep that in mind when deciding where to place it.

Pros: It's a great unit. I sell the mess out of D-Link at work, but we just do not sell this model. My net is now faster than it ever was. I was using actiontech.

Cons: It took awhile to get it set up. I called D-Link tech support and Verizon. It was a battle to get them both to work together, but I found a solution to the problem.

Other Thoughts: Here is the fix:

First of all auto-connect might not work for some people but manual configuration will work, the settings below is for verizon. I have verizon dsl with dhcp, no pppoe or pppoa, which means i get a dynamic ip address from verizon. I had to disconnect my old modem overnight so the IP address would be release from my old modem, and then plug in my new dlink modem and go into the dlink browser and create new wan setting and enter VPI=0, VCI=35,MAC encapsulation,Routing=LLC/SNAP Bridging,Obtain IP Address Automatically,Connection type=MER,Service name=mer_0_35(default),Servicd category=UBR(UBR without PCR),Service state=enabled, nat enabled,Firewall=enabled,IGMP Multicast enabled, wan service enabled, Quality of service=disabled, user/password=admin/admin to start.

Last but not least ....... Have fun

Rating + 4 Works, but has cons.

Pros: It works.
4 ports.
Wireless.
All in one.

I initially bought this at local store which was priced at $90 or so, I then looked it up on Newegg to see that was it was about $20 cheaper so I just returned it and got this new one from here.

Cons: Gets hot after half an hour or so, not sure if it'll have any short or long-term damages.

Other Thoughts: I've read a lot of people having trouble setting up with ATT's DSL, I had the same problem. D-Link and ATT gave me the ol' run around as I went back and forth calling for support.

It turns out it wasn't that hard to set up (reading the manual helps). To enter D-Link's user interface use the IP that was provide and the user and password is admin. Use the wizard, and when it asks you for enter the ISP's username and password it would be the same as the e-mail account and its password that you had set up with ATT.

Also check the box "keep alive" when setting up, leave everything else to default. When setting up wireless you could change the group name and add the WEP later on.

Rating + 5 Perfect Modem/Wireless Router

Pros: My AT&T Modem/Wireles Router just failed on me and since they only have a one year warranty on their '2Wire' Modem/Wireless Router, I missed out by 2 months. So instead of paying AT&T a ton of money for another Modem/Router that will only last me for a year, i decided to get a well known brand such as D-Link. This router is perfect. Easy installation and setup. Took me no more than 3 minutes to get everything all set up. When it asks for the PPPoE Service name and password, just enter your AT&T account username and password. (ec. xxxx@att.net, and password)

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Glad to have my internet back up and running in perfect condition. Also, Newegg is the best. I ordered is yesterday and it came today with just the basic free shipping, thats amazing!

Pros: Setup was pretty simple (Centurytel is my ISP), put in all the settings from my old modem, saved and rebooted the D-Link and I was up and running. It has wireless, even though I don't use it. Good set of options and no more locked down firmware like the other modem I was using.

Cons: Only 10/100. Does seem to run a bit hot, see other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: I opened her up and checked, it has a small heatsink (looked about 20mm wide by 10mm tall) on the main chip but it is on with some of the worst thermal tape I have ever seen, I took it off and cleaned it up and put it back on with some nice thermal epoxy, then added some other smaller heatsinks to the other chips. However, even then the case gets quite warm, I think it has to do with lack of venting more than the heatsink. Time will tell if this hurts anything.

Rating + 5 Nice Router after you figure it out

Pros: Works great after you get it figured out.

Cons: Tech support from dlink gave me the runaround and my isp had no clue of what to set things at. Wish the router had better range. going through a wall to a room about 30 feet away it gets a weak signal paired up with an edimax wireless card. Cant say for sure if it is the router or the card.

Other Thoughts: I am a user of Iowatelecom. If your internet service provider requires you to register your mac address then do the manual set up and do the mac emulation on the first page and make sure that you have it set to obtain ip address automatically. Everything works fine.

Cons: The wireless signal is weak. The signal is dropped every 5-10 minutes on multiple laptops.

Other Thoughts: I would probably not get this modem if I could go back. I got it just to combine my wireless modem and dsl modem into one simple box. My desktop internet connection and speeds are great. But my wireless signal is weak and is dropped quite often. This is quite frustrating when trying to do work on the internet and the connection drops on you. So This modem is not the best buy but not the worst buy.

Rating + 2 D-Link DSL-2640B

Pros: 1) Newegg.
2) Look and feel of high quality.

Cons: 1) Just couldn't make it work with Qwest DSL.

Other Thoughts: First, Qwest has to be THE MOST COMMON DSL provider in the US. If D-Links' wizard can't figure out how to connect to Qwest, it's pretty much worthless. Second, I tried *EVERYTHING* I could think of to configure this thing because I really wanted to make it work. I even had the GUI for my old modem (sent back to Qwest) and the D-Link up on the screen, side-by-side - to ensure I hadn't missed anything in the setup. If you aren't very technical - pass on this one. If you are very technical - roll the dice and take your chances.

Rating + 4 Great modem for the price!

Pros: Modem has a great connection, better and faster than my old 2wire from qwest. Looks clean, nice color, good lit led lights. has antenna for better connectivity.

Cons: The set up is kinda a pain. Took me about 1 hour... thats mostly from waiting on tech support from qwest and d-link.

Other Thoughts: Be prepared to get your VPI, VCI, and user/pass from qwest if thats your isp. and qwest uses PPPoA

Pros: Works okay. No real problems setting it up.

Cons: The wireless signal was not as good as I hoped. There were areas in my house that does not have good wireless connection. If this was better I would highly recommend it but if you need a good wireless signal then I would tell you to pass on this one.

Pros: well i needed a new modem becasue my old one from my isp (att) kept getting unstable. it would drop down to dialup speeds and would need like a million resets till it went back to normal and it had to be reset every day. i did a lot of shopping around and took a chance despite the reviews that said it was a pita for att customers. well i am happy i took that chance. it took about an hour to set up casue (cause i could not get the wireless to work properly but eventually did) and as soon as it was set up i got the internet i was paying for all this time. the wireless is great for my small apartment and it gives me a steady speed for internet and i am able to do transfer from computer to computer in a speedy fashion.

Cons: it is a little bit on the warm side. but then again it is cooler than my old motorola from att

Other Thoughts: i bought this at a local store u know the one that has the name of the typical side dish for hamburgers made out of potatoes and deep fried [new egg policy ;)]... lol because i wanted it like that day i bought it even though i did pay a little extra than i would of here in new egg. but i am still happy i with my purchase. just felt i needed to give this modem the credit it deserves.

Rating + 5 Better then Expected

Pros: Rock Solid, Works great, getting faster transfers with this unit over the stock Verizon Westell. I live in an area with old horrible phone lines and I am far from the CO, yet this unit performs well even under that condition. I tend to avoid consumer grade products when it is within my budget, but there were very few options in this product area, and I am very impressed with D-Link on this one.
2935 kbps down, 729 up on the 3M service line. With the Westell I was 20% slower.

Cons: This is not a con for me, but it seems to be for some. Yes with Verizon you need to set it up and not use the auto detection. However, when you do, it works great.

DIY efforts require some work, if you you need an out of the box no effort solution, then you should buy your units from Verizon.

Other Thoughts: It does run hot as others said, so I would not suggest leaving it flat on a table. I have mine on a small wire rack and it's gets enough airflow. I do not believe that heat is an issue as very few things I own do not run hot as is.

Pros: Rock sold. Does a great job with Qwest 7Mbit down 800K up. Does what my last setup does without the conflicts and problems with dynamic IP Wan addys.

Had for one month. I never check my connection again.

Cons: The settings for the QOS engine is over my head and requires some google searches and understanding of what the heck those codes mean.

Other Thoughts: D-link. You've got a great product. Make an easier QOS setting feature on your next firmware update.

Rating + 2 Hard to set up, did not last long

Pros: Modem and router all-in-one

Cons: Hard to get set up
runs hot
did not last very long

Other Thoughts: I got this in hopes of "simplifying" and having one unit instead of separate modem and router. Bad idea.

I'm a modest techie, but had to spend a lot of time with my ISP getting the unit set up. They don't "support" any modem but their recommended one, which is chumpy, but I pushed and finally got someone to help me get the settings right.

It runs (well, ran) really hot, and had to be set on edge or over a vent to promote circulation.

After about a year it up and died. I put back on the old modem and bought a LinkSys router. The LinkSys router was plug-and-play, and it worked just by plugging it in.

My recommendation: use separate components and buy LinkSys.

Pros: Fast DSL modem/wireless-router. This is my second one after the first one died after years of service. I have a 120 mm fan sitting underside run by the 1ST PC CORP. ACDC-12V AC wall jack to 12V DC 4pin Molex Adapter. I'm glad that this model is still being built. I will never go back to the ATT modems (junk) Westell or motorola. This router is like having a sports car (life in the fast lane). Upgraded the modem to European V4.0, way lot better than the US firmware. You get more parental control settings, like blocking websites & lockout time for the kids and much more. Downloads 300 + Kbps max - compared to the ATT modems which I only get 60-80 Kbps Max. Sorry ATT stop lying to your customers.

Cons: Did not come with it's own cooling fan. I have to buy it, cost extra money.

Other Thoughts: Try to get an 80 or a 120 mm fan underside, in order for it to run much cooler and probably would last longer. Mine is now cool to the touch.

Rating + 5 So far so good...

Pros: Great replacement for standard Frontier DSL modem - set up complete in less than 5 minutes and it sure beats the monthly rental for a DSL modem. I'll have this paid for in 10 months. Over 4 years of DSL service, I could have paid for 6 - 7 of these!

Cons: Ports are not gigabit, requiring additional router between two switches.

Other Thoughts: Upon seeing reviews that these run hot, I decided to stand mine on its end, not lay it flat. I have not experienced any issues with heat, in fact in runs as cool as my D-Link switches (probably due to greater exposed surface area when stood on end).

Pros: Easy to program this modem, just the same techniques as D-Link's cameras and routers.

Cons: This is the 3rd 2640B modem I got...the first one they sent worked wired ONLY, no WiFi, but port forwarding for my digital IP cameras worked fine, so I had to RMA it.
The second 2640B that NewEgg sent as a replacement would not do port forwarding, regardless of how many hours I spent on the phone with D-Link's Indian/Pakistani techies!

It got RMA'd also, costing me 8.90

The 3rd 2640B that NewEgg sent as a replacement did everything it's supposed to do! WiFi works, the DSL connection to Qwest came up on the first try, and portforwarding works without a hitch for my security cameras.(and another 8.90 freight!)

Other Thoughts: D-Link should hire people who can speak understandable English. Even their people in Silicon valley speak English colored by heavy Hindi accents!

Pros: I was expect this to be a real PITA to hook up but in 20 minutes I had internet and a wireless network up and running stable.

Cons: As many have said, runs hot.

Rating + 4 A Big Improvement

Pros: Much faster DSL. I'm finally getting the bandwidth I've been paying for (6+ Mbps), at least on the downlink. The uplink is holding about steady around 400 kbps, but that seems to be my ISPs fault.
More reliable wireless. I haven't had to do a router reset since I finished the configuration. My old router would require 3-4 resets per week.
The DSL autoconfig worked fine for me. But remember to save your changes!
All in all a very well-performing product.

Cons: The Setup screens take a lot of getting used to. It's kind of a double layer menu system with the top level menu going across the top of the screen and subtopics down the left side that change according to your main selection. But some subtopics are split between different main topics and others aren't where you would expect them.
The quick setup guide poster drops you halfway through the configuration process and refers you to the User Guide on the CD. You cannot get a working configuration using the Quick setup guide alone.
You cannot change the user IDs in the setup, just the passwords. Slightly less secure than my old wireless router in this respect.

Other Thoughts: I used this to replace an aging ADSL modem I got from my ISP and a D-Link wireless router that I used to first setup our wireless network. Overall, this is a big improvement over both of them in reliability and performance.
The unit is warm, but not hot to the touch.
When configuring, save your changes frequently.
The logout button on the configuration doesn't work in my browser. The session just stays open. This would be a big security issue if I had enabled remote configuration.
It helped that I was able to confirm the auto-detected ADSL settings (35/8) for Bellsouth based on review comments here.
I haven't needed to do a BIOS update on the unit I received. D-Link regional FTP sites have newer versions, but unless I see a security alert, I'm not going to bother.
Great NewEgg price and fast shipment, as I've come to expect.

Pros: Surprisingly easy to set up, as close to turnkey as you can get. Excellent admin screens. Solid wireless.

Cons: None offhand. Time will tell.

Other Thoughts: If you are a VZ customer and have the stock, out of the box, integrated wireless modem they provide, you know it is prone to failures and other great moments in being a doorstop. This is a great replacement for that modem. It sets up easily and quickly. If you follow the instuctions for the semi-automated setup, you can be online in moments. It also has solid wireless performance. Ok, perhaps not like a Linksys with 3rd party Linux firmware, but the majority of folks don't need that. The linksus does not provide a built-in modem, either. For the average home or small office user, this will more than suffice.

This is the second one of these modems I have recommended and setup for frustrated customers of the above service. Quite frankly, said service should dump the modems they are using now and just go to these. Oh, and get rid of PPPoE. This is 2009 and there is something called "DHCP" that makes it unnecessary.

Pros: It's been two weeks of the most solid 6Mb service I've ever had. Am using the latest US firmware.

A second IP address is provided to map - or not - DHCP services across two sub-domains. Exclude DHCP address range from the second net and , voila' you have a whole subnet for static IP's. Set subnet netmasks to 255.255.0.0.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Fabricate a support (1 x 1.5 x 5 cm, cork) for each end of the chassis. Raising the unit and providing additional airflow lowered the chassis temperature considerably.

Provide an external high gain antenna (ANT24-0700). Flawless WPA to several clients.

Pros: Just about any aspect of your ADSL installation, conversion, & distribution may be tweaked with this plastic behemoth. It's really quite small - hence, heat rejection characteristics. I know enough about networks to be dangerous. I had my old modem (BellSouth Days) and 3rd (count 'em - 3) router/switch/AP swapped out and operational within an hour. That total includes wireless setup with hidden SSID and WPA2 encryption.

The automated setup seemed to work right out of the box. I got FP indicators. But I HAD to tweak it.

Cons: Like I said above, I really believe this unit detected my AT&T service right out of the box. There are many "mini" wizards and automated tasks I didn't explore. That being said, if you deviate from the marked path, you'd better know what you're doing. There are enough bells & whistles on this unit to drive a Naval Aviator to self abuse.

Other Thoughts: I'll follow up as this unit ages. I've tried to accommodate for a hot running box. If it keeps up like it has this evening though - I'm very sold. This is the best 6Mb service I've had since service inception five years ago.
Just to add some legitimacy - I'm a network/embedded/aerospace engineer with 25 years experience. I witnessed the dawning of Aquarius.

Pros: Worked for a little when I first bought it?

Cons: Service and Support

Other Thoughts: Had it set up on a WiFi internet for a room mate and myself at first. Worked perfectly fine then. But as soon as I switched to a desktop and wired connection I havent had a single second of optimal connection. My internet is constantly laggy and I can't access the setup on it to password protect my Wireless. I've tried calling customer support but since it is out of warranty they are worthless unless I want to dish out more dough on a absolutely horrid product.

Pros: Handled a recent LAN party gaming and 'interesting files' sharing night with no problems at all. Had 6 systems all swapping data at once with no errors.

Cons: The power led is now quite dead.
It was faded and washed out when I recieved the unit, and now it's as dead as last weeks fish.

Other Thoughts: D-Link customer support is rather worthless in this respect. They didn't really seem to care that hmmm, there's a defect in the unit and possibly the customer is kind of grouchy about the fact that his new equipment now has no "on light."

Anyhoo, the unit is operating well but the customer service sucks the big one. And don't count on your power light.

Rating + 4 AT&T install was a PITA.

Pros: Works well, good wifi signal, no muss no fuss networking between wired systems in the house.
Replaced my old garbage Westell/Netgear router hashup.

Even looks very clean, not utility ugly like much of the computer geat out there.

Cons: The power light started off a nice bright red when first turned on, then was a VERY weak green. The other status lights are a very vivid green/red when active.
The power light seems to be gaining intensity over time, now it's only washed out instead of barely visible.

-----

Setup took a few times through to get things just right. Didn't seem to want to cooperate with manual setup at first.

Other Thoughts: Update with the Euro firmware, it's much less of a PITA.

No thanks to AT&T customer service, those guys either have no bloody idea of why you're asking them for your VPI setting and what address is the name server located.

Access/Parental Control: OH HECK YEAH.
When you have kids and it's after your bedtime, you sure as heck don't want them wandering around the net unsupervised. The PC tool allows you to lock out user accounts during times you specify, which can be configured individually through the whole week. So no more Myspace/WoW during homework time. Individual accounts can be tuned so 'Billy' is locked out from 5-8pm and allowed on from 8-9pm. 'Susie' is allowed on from 5-7pm but locked out after 7pm until 7-8am. Etc.

Yes, parenting takes some effort but it pays off.

Access control does the same thing and can be configured for all sorts of allowances you may need.

Rating + 3 Better than Westell

Pros: I have Verizon DSL. The D-link is better than the Westell thing sent by Verizon. Definitely the signal strength is better.

Cons: When these people write that it gets hot, they mean "It gets hot!". That can't be good. I have to power this thing off about every two days. What's up with that? I bought a brand name router because the Westell thing slowed down every day and had to be reset.

Other Thoughts: It does work with US Verizon DSL. The wizard does not. Go through all the settings on your existing DSL and write them down before changing. I also had to change the 'modulation'. Clear everything except G.Dmt enabled.

I'm not sure I would buy this again. I want a router that will keep its speed for months at a time. My whole family knows that if the web is down, cycle the d-link router. That's not good.

Pros: Excellent product at a reasonable price. Despite misgivings after reading other reviews, had no trouble at all configuring the unit. Recommend getting the European firmware. It has a much nicer interface and other features not in the American firmware. As usual Newegg rocks. Free Shipping and got the package the next day.

Cons: Unit seem to run a little warm.

Other Thoughts: Setup took about 15 minutes using American firmware that came with the product. Setup Wizard worked perfectly with AT&T service in CA. Later flashed to European firmware, v.3.06. Unit retained all settings. Upgraded to European firmware v.4.0. Settings were still retained. Newegg disallows posting links but, if you Google on Flashing DSL-2640B European Firmware, you'll find links to the firmware downloads.

Rating + 5 AMAZING ADSL Modem/Router/Access Point All-In-One

Pros: - Fast Modem/Wireless networking
- Easy-to-Setup, even though some things like wireless may not work afterwards
- Faster speeds on SpeedTest

Cons: - I had to get the european firmware in order to get my wireless networking working: The American firmware is BAD, DO NOT get it/use it. Update your modem with the european one, it rocks!
- I had to look on the internet for firmware updates
- Bad manual, does not really explain anything

Other Thoughts: If you are an average user, you might be having a hard time setting up your wireless, so I recommend you look on the internet for (mostly Google): "2640B European firmware" and use the latest version, 4.00!

It has a very sleek design, and it's very user-friendly compared to the US one

Other than that, the modem does its job and once you have it set up correctly, the wireless signal is very strong!

Pros: Powerful wireless router - This router was not my first choice because I was advised by my ISP to go another route. I am very glad that I went this route because the D-Link router is perfect.

Cons: Hard to setup. Wizard didn't work for my verizon DSL. Verizon is horrible and didn't bother even trying to help me. I have to say I am very disappointed with them, that's just bad customer service.

Other Thoughts: As other verizon users have posted that the 0/35 config worked, it didn't for me. If you are having trouble like I did, i tried 6/38 and it worked. Once its up and running its an awesome piece of equipment

Rating + 5 Works fine with AT&T in Michigan

Pros: No issues setting up. wizard found and configured the ADSL connection with AT&T. Wireless was a snap as well.
One short coming was the lack of being able to assign static IP addresses via DHCP.
Installed the EU 4.0 firmware from dlink.eu site. This allows the setting of DHCP to provide a specific address to a MAC. Also has more settings for the firewall plus allows MAC filtering on the Wireless. Has a much nicer interface and the EU firmware connected up with AT&T without any issues with the wizard.

Cons: Only con I have is it does seem to run hot. Have noted this complaint by others as well. Thought it might be due to the wireless defaulting to 100% power. Turned mine down to 60% as still just as hot. 60% seems fine for my house.

Pros: Looks good. Had no trouble setting up with Verizon in Massachusetts. Just need to change the first default value to 0. The other stays at 35. Wireless worked fine. Unit is in cellar and I can roam about the house no problem. Has external antenna, so you could buy an amplified one to extend the range.

Cons: Strange port forwarding behaviour. I have a small web server at home just for the fun of it. I had a Westell modem that wouldn't let port 80 thru unless the server was given the passthru IP, where the web server had the external IP by default. Thats what pass thru means.
Without passthru, port 80 would be blocked. This unit also blocked port 80 even though l;like the westell it was configured to pass it along to the web server. If I used this or the Westell as bridges, my Netgear 3500 allows port 80 through.

Rating + 5 Verizon Should Use These Instead

Pros: With my computer off, I powered on the D-Link DSL-2640B, turned my computer on, opened my web browser, and went to http://192.168.1.1/ to use the wizard which correctly configured my Verizon DSL. It took about 3 minutes to go through the wizard. I also added "time-a.nist.gov" as a time server. This unit is fast, runs at a decent temperature, and has a nice design.

Cons: I wish it had the European firmware. What I mean by that is the U.S. version uses the older style blue/yellow firmware whereas the European version uses the newer style gray/orange firmware which has a few more features. I also wish this unit allowed reservation of LAN IPs so I wouldn't have to manually configure IPs on each LAN device.

Other Thoughts: Perhaps D-Link will come out with updated firmware that will address my CONS above. At any rate, this unit is MUCH BETTER than the Actiontec and Westell versions Verizon currently uses.

Rating + 5 Simple and Easy setup

Pros: This was easy to setup. I logged in to my Windstream provided modem and copied down the settings. Then i plugged in the new Dlink and logged in to input them. It worked 100% this way.

Cons: The Dlink had an auto setup wizard that could not configure my connection. Not a big deal. Manually inputting the settings worked instantly.

Other Thoughts: Way cool to have half the boxes in my network cabinet. I replaced a Paradyne DSL modem and a Lynksys router with this device.

Pros: Worked good while it worked but died after 1 month.

Cons: Tech support is a joke. you get bounced around to just about everyone on the planet that DOESN'T speak English.

Other Thoughts: Took all day to process a RMA with D-LINK. --> Buy something else or be sure you have a working spare.

Rating + 5 Does the job well

Pros: Replaced three different boxes (modem, router, and WAP) at my parents house with this. It's a nice replacement and it worked beautifully on their SBC DSL (AT&T). It auto-detected what type of service they had and adjusted for it. Very nice setup utility. Doesn't look bad, either.

Cons: Wish it had a better antenna.

Other Thoughts: My dad's laptop is terribly fickle, and their house is a black hole for wireless signals, but this thing works well enough. I just had to position it correctly so that the wireless signal could reach the living room from the room it was in - that has more to do with the house than the AP, though. I just wish the wireless was a little more powerful. A new antenna should fix that, though.

Rating + 4 Excruciating, then simple.

Pros: Nice design, quick physical setup, simple instructions, and the convenience of being both a modem and a router. Solid as a rock, no interruptions, wireless all over the place.

Cons: Technical horror story: my computers recognized the router when hooked up via Ethernet cables but couldn't connect to the Internet. I created a connection to Verizon DSL manually, which worked. It was sluggish and I had to do it on every computer, which was fine for a quick fix, but my laptops couldn’t get wireless internet, just the LAN. I spent two hours on the phone with D-Link and he wasn’t helpful since I already know how to run power cycles. They directed me to Verizon to obtain the VPI/VCI. I called and was unsurprised to learn that they were the same as the defaults. I called back D-Link and they made me power cycle another three times after changing obvious settings ('Try bridged connection, now try PPPoE'). He then told me it was probably defective and I should send it back. Exhausted, I tried walking through the wizard by myself and it just started working perfectly. It only loses an egg because of the awful customer service.

Other Thoughts: Another Verizon DSL customer posted his settings, so I figured I'd post what I did as well in case anyone encounters this problem. You will need your Verizon DSL username and password. Try auto-connect first, then try this in the Wizard:

(VPI: 0) (VCI: 35) (QoS: No) [NEXT] (PPPoE) (Encapsulation: LLC/SNAP-Bridging) (Enable 802.1q: No) [NEXT] (Username/Password) (Authentication: Auto) (Dial On Demand: No) (PPP IP Extension: No) (Keep Alive: No) (Use Static IP Address: No) (Obtain Gateway Automatically) [NEXT] (Enable NAT: Yes) (Enable Firewall: Yes) (Enable IGMP Multicast: Yes) (Enable WAN Service: Yes) [NEXT] (Enable DHCP Server) (Configure Second IP: No) [NEXT] (Enable Wireless: Yes) (Save/Reboot)

I’m nearly positive I tried these settings many, many times, then it just decided to start working. The error that was always returned was that the default gateway kept coming up blank. So, watch out. Once you get past this, it’s a fantastic modem.

Rating + 5 Works with my ATT DSL

Pros: Much cleaner install than the seperate modem and wifi-router I was using before. With the Westell I would get intermitent slow response, now the connection seems much more stable. I have it working with my ATT DSL account using PPPoE I used the VCN 8/35 which I pulled from the expert screens on my Westell modem. Which can be accessed by attaching your computer directly to the Westell and then opening your browser and entering 192.168.1.254

Cons: User interface is a bit clunky and a little counter-intuitive, but after playing with it for a few minutes you can get it figured out.

Rating + 5 Sweet!

Pros: Sick! For the price, has great DSL speed and a good Ethernet switch. I was able to get my VPI/VCI numbers configured after a long, arduous process with AT&T, but that's their fault for having idiots for tech support, not D-Link's.

Cons: Took a while to get wireless working the way I wanted, but once I had it up it worked like a charm, bug-free and fast.

Other Thoughts: I bought it right before the price went down!!

Pros: This thing is GREAT! Much faster than my old 2Wire.
I used the auto-setup wizard and everything just fell together.
You MUST have your ISP e-mail address and password or it wont connect.
Wouldn't hurt to be able to READ the very short (8 small pages in low tech lingo) installation manual at at least an 8th grade skill level.

Pros: Arrived fast. Nice box. Better looking that the speedstream 5100 I thought I was going to replace.

Cons: Auto-connect did not work. Kept getting ADSL connection is down. Tried to assign VPI/VCI manually, but that did not work. Tried calling att and they said it a router not a modem. tried calling d-link but the number was no longer in service. I live in L.A. and have ATT DSL. I read other reviews and thought this might work for me. I am writting this using my failing modem. Wish there was better info on how to get this to work.

Other Thoughts: I wish this would have worked right out of the box.

Rating + 5 Problem's?

Pros: Not sure why people are complaining about using with AT&T.

I set mine up using the wizard in no time flat. All you need is your user/pass which is usually your ISP email address and it's password. Simple enough?

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Just follow the modem's built in auto wizard and tweek afterwards. AT&T Tech support can provide the VCN number if you lost you startup booklet and the auto locate doesn't find to right number's. It's usually 0/30 or 6/30.

Pros: Easy to set up. Configures for even older DSL settings if needed, and is up to date with current protocols and speeds. Allows you to shut and lock the back door from your ISP's, unlike the modems they sell you with the service.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these now, they are awesome. Definite buy for those wanting to get away from the junk ISP's sell you like 2Wire and Zyxel.

Rating + 5 Setup was a breeze

Pros: Saves space and a power jack over having a separate modem and wireless router. Setup wizard worked great for me.

Cons: Only one antenna

Other Thoughts: I have AT&T (SBC?) Yahoo DSL, and setup was a breeze. I just ran the wizard and everything worked. I replaced two boxes (the modem and a failing D Link wireless router) with one smaller box, so it definitely freed up some space around my computer. My old D-Link DI-614+ wireless router had dropped on the floor a few times, so I guess it can be forgiven for failing after three years. I haven't notice a difference in speed, but I'm very happy.

Rating + 4 Works Well -- Wireless Setup Hard

Pros: Wired and wireless in one box. Wired networking works well between our computers A and B -- was easy to set up. Security features seem good and are easy to manage. Much better than AAT&T supplied Speedstream it replaces -- because no dropouts or signal losses. Detects bandwidth setting at AT&T for my account -- found that they set us for a lower bandwidth than they were charging for (AT&T refunded the difference for the months we were mischarged -- the refund paid for modem and more).

Cons: Very hot so provided extra ventilation. Not a snap to set up wireless networking between computers A and C -- I could set up internet connection (modem to wireless computer C) but not wireless computer to wired computer file sharing. I assume its my fault -- but, better instructions would have helped.

Other Thoughts: We have AT&T. I got 60+ ft wireless range (for internet) through multiple normal walls and concrete walls in my house by adding an after market antenna about three times the length of the original. Satisfied enough with operation in our particular case that I would buy another identical modem. Main system Athlon 64 X2 AM2 6000, 4GB DRAM, MSI K9A Platinum MB, ATI HD3870, Windows XP Pro SP2.

Rating + 5 Can use with Verizon DSL

Pros: Was able to use auto configure with Verizon DSL (Wash DC area) with no problems. Found all the right settings and was up and running in a few minutes. Has now been on for over a week without dropping anything. Replaced Westell 327 that started failing.

Cons: Manual could be more detailed.
Information in manuals and on web might lead one to think that it won't work with a Mac (there's no set-up instructions for OS X), but it works just fine if you can set up your Mac on your own.

Other Thoughts: Just doing the basics with it: internet access both wired and wireless. Haven't tried printer or file sharing, gaming, etc.

Rating + 5 Easy, Looks nice, Sturdy

Pros: This thing looks great. Have Verizon DSL service and had it out of the box an dup and running in less then 10 minutes. Nice sturdy construction too.

Cons: Does seem to get a bit warm, but hopefully that will not cuase any issues. I have always used Linksys router and whatever DSL modem I was sent from provider so perhaps this is normal for D-Link.

Other Thoughts: While it does seem to get a little warm hopefully that will not cuase any issues. I have always used Linksys router and whatever DSL modem I was sent from provider so perhaps this is normal for D-Link. Glad I bought it and would recomend to others. It also seems to make my internet move a bit faster then before with the Westell Modem and Linksys router did.

Rating + 1 Secret username and password

Pros: Pretty box.

Cons: I would like to use the wizard to set up the modem but nobody at AT&T or D-Link knows the secret username and password. AT&T tells me I have a router not a modem and D-link tells me to call AT&T.

Other Thoughts: Like the other reviewers say, if it doesn't work right away, send it back.

Rating + 1 Unfortunately, it didn't work for me.....

Pros: Nice unit from an aesthetic point of view, has an on/off button, displays current wired connection, nice administration interface

Cons: Reset button doesn't always work, I wasn't able to configure it using wireless access

Other Thoughts: My ISP provider is AT&T. I am a computer savvy person. I spent *lots* of hours trying to make this unit work. I even bought another one because I thought it might be defective. It worked fine when hard wired but didn't work wirelessly. For some mysterious reason, it assigned weird IP settings to my computer when using the wireless access. I tried with three other computers but had the same effect. I just want to say that D-Link support is really, really bad. Long hold times, and I got an agent who was very rude and refused to give me helpful information or his name/agent #. I filed a complaint with one of the supervisors and they haven't gotten back to me (probably never will). They were unable to figure out the problem. I ended up buying a 2Wire wireless router/modem which worked immediately. I think it'll work for most people, though. I returned the product and NewEgg refunded me. I will definitely buy from NewEgg again.

Rating + 1 Everything you've heard about their docs and tech support is true

Pros: It does look a lot better than the one it was supposed to replace.

Cons: I'm sure if it worked I'd be as happy as the five-star reviewers, but if you plug it in and it doesn't go happily, you're pretty much toast. The documentation is absolutely no help, and their tech support is worse. Their site isn't any good. The setup process is horrible for trying to solve problems. If it doesn't plug and play and you need to get your hands dirty, my experience is that you might as well re-box it and send it back at that point.

Rating + 1 Be nice if it worked

Pros: The idea is good, the execution poor

Cons: Set up unit, self-rebooted.. LAN#1 went dead..(??) reset everything finally used LAN#2.. DSL speed 4-600 slower than At&t Motorola (Latest new type)/WRT54g..very sluggish..Unable to get it to pass UMA signal for Tmobile@home service..Guess I got a bad unit, but have to pay return shipping so $$ wasted.. won' try again.. JUNK

Other Thoughts: Dlink tech support manned by children, sound and talk like HS.. Know NOTHING.. 2nd tier not much better, didn't even know what UMA was (Dlink makes a dedicated Tmobile router)..short wait time. Just more Communist Chinese JUNK..I thought Linksys was bad.. Dlink if awful

Rating + 4 WOW - Fast !!!

Pros: Replaced a 2-wire dsl modem that came with sbc (att) yahoo. Unbelievable how much faster this is when compared to the old setup. I was lucky to get 1400 on the old setup, now I get 2200-2400 kbs.

Not cable speed, but much better than before (and cheaper than cable).

Note old setup went internet - 2 wire modem - netgear wgt624v2 router - computer (even for wired).

Cons: was not easy to setup at least on xp. Setup on seperate vista went quite easily (go figure). The pain was worth the gain.

The wireless does not connect as well as the netgear did. All pieces are within inches of the old setup.

Other Thoughts: I ended up using my old netgear as well as the dlink for wireless. I hook to dlink where possible, but have the netgear wired to port 4 of the dlink. Not optimum, but works...

Rating + 4 Great product with a few exceptions

Pros: Set up process could not have been easier. By far the most simple interface I have seen to date and it's great for users who just want something that works. Easily replaces my 2wire gateway and works nicely with AT&T dsl service.

Cons: No hosted application settings. For gamers who want to set up TCP/UDP settings for individual software, avoid the models running with USA firmware. Oddly, the UK firmware for the exact same model has this feature. I find this feature useful so i don't plan to keep it if I can not find a good firmware package for it.

Other Thoughts: hate to come off as a complainer but the D-Link tech support rumors you may have heard are true. Techs insisted these did not even use firmware, yet all models come with features to update the firmware from a local bin file. Such a shame considering it's an otherwise exceptional product from a proven good company.
