Works out of the box with linux (think I was on ubuntu 9.04 at the time). Cons: Low resolution No autofocus Poor color balance (seems to be a problem with all webcams) Other Thoughts: For a bit more coin I might recommend the logitech 9000, solves my first two complaints with this camera, and newegg has mail in rebates for said camera from time to time. 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. We have had it for over 6 months and works well. The onboard lights are a bit bright but give it a much better picture. We got it for our laptop without a built-in webcam while we were traveling. Much better picture than that of my onboard cam on the other PC. The software that came with it is easy to use and install. This camera has excellent quality. We used it on MSN chat, ooVoo, and Skpye without any problems. Cons: The only problem we had was a laptop design issue. We have an old Toshiba Satellite with the speakers at the top of the keyboard. Because of this the sound is projecting directly upwards into the microphone causing feedback. This was easily solved by turning down the volume a bit. Again, this is caused by the design of the laptop, not the camera. Other Thoughts: Great camera, easy to use, great quality, excellent price. Pros: Picture is nice,color is good,everything works fine right out the box in debian linux(squeeze),the built in clip is cool. Built in mic works great,also comes with a ear piece headphone/mic. Cons: No hardware switch to turn off the LED's,not too big of a deal though because they only turn on when the lighting is low. Theres no on/off light on the camera so you cant tell if your cam is actually on or not. HighTech Tech Level: somewhat high Ownership: 1 week to 1 month This user purchased this item from Newegg	12/17/2009 4:02:39 PM Works great with 7/64 :) Pros: Works perfectly, good image quality, excellent microphone quality, good solid feel, well built, nice "grease dampened" focus ring (unlike some other more expensive cams, THIS cam stays in focus. Software drivers are unobtrusive and work well- dissapppears when not in use, pops up in lower righthand corner when being used. "Zoom Controller is effective, software controls work well. The "Zoom Tracking" function works well- and I prefer to use it. The LED illumination is blindingly bright to look at in a dark room, but the illumination dissipates, and without additional lighting works well only out to about 2 feet (with NO additional lighting). Not a problem! The LED controls allow for "auto on", On and Off. I leave it on always- when the Yahoo or whatever app is not addressing the camera, both the LED and control windows deactivate- PERFECT! Comes with an "okay" headset/microphone perfect for my laptop when not using the camera. Cons: None! I'm very happy (and I'm a tough customer to please)! Other Thoughts: If you want an inexpensive, reliable and well-built cam with great software drivers- this is it! I use it often, and it does what it's supposed to do. Its image quality is grainy but acceptable with only one overhead CFL as a light source (dorm room setup), so no complaints there. Cons: Manual focus ring was a little stiff and made a crunching noise when turned too far the wrong way, LEDs are too intense to have pointing directly into the face. The way the camera is attached to its clip prevents it from being held sideways off a monitor and there is no option to rotate the video by 90 degrees. Other Thoughts: Got it to work in 64-bit Windows 7 by running the setup program on the driver installation CD under Vista compatibility mode. Did you find this review helpful? As good/better as the Locitech Communicate STX. No idea about the headset, haven't used. Read other thoughts below. Cons: Will not clip on my LCD and unless I'm doing something wrong it does not do face tracking. The LED's are extremely bright (slip over tinted light filter would be nice). No auto focus. Would be nice if the lens cap could be stored some place on the unit when it is removed since it's black and not very visible and easy to lose. Simply fixes for hercules with a little re-designing. Other Thoughts: Have an artificial lens molded to the back of the unit for cap storage and some contrasting colors for cap. Include a slip over tinted light filter to cover the LED lights to control brightness (holder could be molded to back of unit also. It really needs a weighted desk/flat suface base that the unit could clip too along with an added attachment for LCD monitors that it coud clip too. It woud be well worth a few more bucks if need be! Cons: None (now, with conflict resolved) Other Thoughts: I am amending my earlier negative review: after working with Hercules tech support, the software conflict this product caused with Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance was resolved with new versions of the driver and utility software. In hindsight I am also suspicious that the conflict might have involved my use of the /3GB switch with Windows (for the benefit of SC:FA); the webcam is after all a hardware device, and the driver might have been sticking its feet into the wrong bit of address space. Regardless, BOTH work fine now, even to the point of FA running with the webcam software running in the foreground (though if there's actually a point to doing that I can't tell ya). Cons: For me the software driver causes another application to fail abruptly: Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance. The game fails when the opening intro video would normally be played, and it fails regardless whether I try to skip the actual play of it or not. This is not an acceptable software conflict, especially since I'm quite addicted to Forged Alliance and would use it far more than any Web cam. I'd probably say its worth 30bucks the leds can go on auto if the room is too dark, decent software and easy install. Has a little earpiece haven't tired it but seems decent. The web cam has a mic on it as well and it is pretty decent you don't have to speak loudly to pick your voice up. Overall I was impressed with it especially if it lasts. Worked on Windows Home XP just fine. Cons: Not really a con but its always a little blurry when you restart the computer. I don't believe it has auto focus but you turn the camera piece and once you find it clear it stays picture perfect. Unfortunately this is completely not true in my experience. The mic worked, but the video did not work at all, and my computer would freeze if I tried to use any programs that used video (like skype). Contacted hercules for support, still no answer. Other Thoughts: I actually bought three of these, one for my girlfriend, one for my roommate, and one for me. Both of them are in luck and skyping away with their 32 bit XP machines, but not I. We have used it for web phoning the relatives in Kansas. The picture quality is OK for the application. Does seem a bit fuzzy. I think this is normal for web cams though. Cons: It is actually 320x240 interpolated, how do I know this, because I have another similar model that is actually 640x480, and this is crisp but clearly lower resolution. Also, although the camera doesn't need drivers, if you want control over the built in lights, it needs the included driver/application installed. Other Thoughts: I don't care about the low res, its just that I expect correct specs from a manufacturer, this taught me to think twice should I see anything else from "Hercules". 1 out of 2 people found this review helpful. It's tiny but packs a punch. It pinched, just right, on the edge of my thick LCD flatscreen. The resolution is good and you can clearly see everything without color distortion/blurr. It has 4 BRIGHT leds in front of the lens in case you dont have any other source of lighting, but they can be turned off. The automatic zoom is a nice touch too. If you're standing away from your computer this thing will zoom right up to your face automatically and the picture will be just as nice. The software that comes with it handles it all with a nice and simple control panel. Cons: It doesn't have an auto focus feature but most webcams dont and for this price you can't have everything. Just twist the lens clockwise or counter-clockwise untill you get the best picture. Other Thoughts: The camera doesnt actually pan around to follow you. It just zooms in or out to fit your face thanks to the software they give you. The product specs can be a little misleading when it tries to describe this feature. Also, the clamp comes with a peel off sticky surface in case you dont have have anywhere to clamp it down to. So props to that. Decided to buy this based on the positive reviews here. Relatively clear pix over skype. I liked the built in mic on the cam itself...voice quality was nice :-) Cons: I have a Dell Dimension XPS system and for some reason or another I get no video call option whenever I start using Skype. Seems like a driver issue. i get around this by unplugging and replugging the usb cable. And in some cases opening the Hercules webcam program...only by doing these extra steps will Skype eventually provide me with the video call option. Big nuissance and after reading all the reviews here seems like most Dell users have this problem :-( Other Thoughts: I can live with the bright leds but the driver issue is the biggest letdown. The software isn't huge and it isn't an annoyance. Just pop the CD in, plug the cam in when it tells you, restart (I know it doesn't tell you to, but it helps) and you're ready to go. Cons: The picture is a little blurry when you have lights on, it seems. However, in the dark with the 4 LED lights in the front on, it's crystal clear. Otherwise you get a horrible view free earpiece driver isn't bulky (like vista) compared to logitech and microsofts Cons: doesn't work with linux... as far as i know, ive tried on ubuntu 8.10 and fedora 10 with no success minor, but earpeice wasn't my style but im more of an around the ear type of guy (but have a friend that likes it) only thing in the package besides driver is a zoom controller. Everything else you need additional software to use (video taping, photo taking, logitech has these) Other Thoughts: i have a second computer and webcam and just swapped the 2 so that this one is on my non-linux one. so no big deal and the mic, my friend needed a mic for his laptop so that work out fine. and the price is cheap 2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. I have owned several inexpensive webcams, but this one is worth way more than they are charging. I would buy another one in a heartbeat! The lighting, color, and mic options are terrific, the mic works excellently, and the picture quality is unbelievable. I thought I was getting a run of the mill webcam, but I found out that it is a cadillac of webcams in an affordable range. I have found that 99.9% of the time I had no need to use the LED lights, unless I am in an unilluminated room. It works great with Vista, Window's Live Messenger, and Skype. Yahoo locks up & has issues of it's own, but that is not the fault of the cam. It's built sturdy, seems to be solid metal in the cam head area, and the clip is more than exceptional. The only way they can improve this cam is to have automatic focusing. Cons: I had issues with the cam working on my older XP-Pro computers, but then again, they are ancient (more than 5 years old so I doubt it was the cam or the driver for it). The LEDs are very bright and hurts my eyes, but that's not necessarily a con for most people. Other Thoughts: I can't say enough about this cam. I just wish it would work on my older computers. If you are looking for a good webcam and don't want to spend a fortune, buy this one! I don't have the money to spend on an expensive webcam, but this one is more than adequate, bordering on superior. (I would say superior, but I cannot afford large sums of money on different webcams.) I have owned this for quite a while, it's seen a lot of abuse, yet it still works supurbly. You will not be disappointed with this webcam. Just make sure your computer meets their minimum specs first. I use this at work as a "security" cam along with webcamXP and couldnt be happier with the results. I have it up in the corner of the room near the ceiling (15ft) and the mic pics up convos in the room (15x25) no prob and sounds in adjacent rooms. The pics are great... a little tricky to get it focused, no close ups here, just long range. The clip works great, prob plenty strong enough for a monitor. Cons: The lights are bright close up, but switchable. Nice feature nonetheless. Other Thoughts: I'm going to buy another one when it goes on sale again. If you're looking for a good general purpose cam, with a mic that actually works, this is a good choice. Comes with a headset/mic that I havent tried yet. I tried on two different desktops and a laptop. All running Windows XP Pro w/ SP3. Return trip will cost HALF the cost of the camera. Seems rediculous, I got this over a more expensive Microsoft camera. I've had luck with Microsoft cameras in the past, but thought I'd give this a shot due to the reviews. Very fluid movement (30+ FPS) at 640 X 480 resolution. Can be stuck on almost any surface, including the top of your monitor. USB cable is of adequate length to reach your PC. Drivers installed initially without any problems. Works great with Vista 32bit. Sound is good using the built in werbcam microphone and the supplied headset mic. I must add that this webcam has an excellent picture in low light conditions. I was pleasantly surprised. Max video capture is 800 X 600 Cons: Slght graininess in the video - but what do you expect for a $25.00 webcam? I have noticeed a very slight "lag" in the video between when I speak and when the video displays. Less than a quarter of a second. Not bad at all. Had some difficulty getting the headset and mic working, had to uninstall and reinstall the software. Worked after that tho. Repeated that procedure to go back to the webcam mic. The included softwere could include a few more extras, but I'am not complaining that much for 25bucks plus free shipping Other Thoughts: A very good entry level webcam. Manual focus - once its set you usually dont have to worry about it anymore. LED's are BRIGHT! But you can turn it off in software. Had to register just to ask a question, but the promised password required to login and ask a question has never arrived. Also, every time I turn off the PC, I have to reinstall the webcam driver. I have Win XP 64 bit my old $35 cam didn't have 64 bit drivers when I upgraded system. Been looking for a cam that I could use with out getting burned and this has no prob with it. Set under ten min. Neat zoom function. Streaming video is great in general lighting, clear and not jagged like other cheap cams. Audio setting are great to adjust, great sensitivity. Placement versatility is also nice. Video settings have lots of options, and black and white option too! You can turn the lights on and off. Very busy cam for the buck! Cons: Not the clearest picture if your picky. You are probably going to have to play with the settings every time the light in the room changes. Compression settings aren't easy to get dialed in. LEDS ARE VERY BRIGHT- If you are video blogging in darker settings- DO NOT STARE AT LEDs- you could probably hurt yours eyes! I tried it for maybe 2 minutes and I was blind for almost 5 minutes (not literally, but you know that flash blindness) Other Thoughts: Auto focus would be nice. Brightness adjustments would be the next step. I like the LEDs but they are just so bright! Overall great cam! I definitely recommend for the budget buy! I grabbed 3 of these for $19.99 and free shipping. 1 for my wife and I and 2 for our family. These have optical glass in them and stand head and shoulders over other cameras in its price range. So far they have worked with every webchat program I have tried. Google chat, Skype, Oovoo, the video is all good. They installed perfectly on XP and Vista. The zoom tracking works pretty well and plenty of settings to tweak for a good picture. If you are looking to do some simple video chat this camera is for you. If you want a better picture then you will have to spend $80+ on a better camera. Cons: The picture quality is not crystal clear, but unless you are making a living off of a webcam or need some high def feed, these are perfect for everyday video chat. The clip fits all the laptops I have tried but may not fit all lcd monitors for desktops. Fortunately the clip also is a great stand or can be clipped to a shelf or something. The camera is not very small or cool looking, but whatever. Other Thoughts: I would have liked some motion detecting built into the software, but for 20 bucks... Also, this has manual focus, which I like. I set it once and have not had to change it since. People in the foreground are as clear as a wall 10 feet in the background. I turned the 4 led lights off as they do a better job of blinding you than actually lighting you unless you happen to be in the pitch dark. They do, however do a great job of turning on when the ambient light fluctuates... maybe if you could adjust the light sensitivity. Has four very bright LEDs that will turn on when the lights go low. The cam is small, light weight, nice to look at, and has a clip on it that allows it to attach to most things. Its a good cam for the price. Cons: My friend and i both have the same cam and we have both noticed a pronounced brrrrrrrr-- sound when using the cams mic. Switch to a different mic sound goes away. Built in lights are bright, perhaps a bit too bright if you don't like being 'on stage' - but very effective. It has a great 'low light' option in the driver that works well when others I've had wouldn't. The auto zoom/pan is really good. You'd think the camera is motorized, following you - it's done in software only, but it's remarkable. You probably don't need the MediaCenter that comes with it, just the cam drivers themselves, especially if you're using Skype like I am. One thing to note is to make sure you use the manual image focus dial on the camera. None of the setup prompts tell you to adjust it so I was confused for a while...maybe I'm just stupid. Software allows you to auto focus on a target within the cams viewing area (also has manual adjustment for manual focus). Picture is very clear. Picks up sound well, though not clear enough to use for web phones. People complain about the light being to bright. You can turn it off completely with the software. The auto function turns it on a little too readily, but when you need it it's a darn good thing to have. Cons: Picks up too much background noise when recording your voice. No ambient light shield, so it picks up ambient light from EVERY direction and you end up with "light artifacts" on every picture. Solution is to cup it with something like cardboard, or literally a Dixie Cup, lol, to reduce light artifacts. Other Thoughts: Glad I got this camera. It's very high quality for the money. Pros: Decent image, LEDs for low light situations Cons: Every time you shut down the PC, when you start up again, Windows New Hardware wizard starts because it somehow loses the driver. You can't just point to the driver folder that exists under Program Files\Hercules\driver, it says it couldn't find it, you have to run the install routine again. It puts its software in the tray and of course the software opens in addition to any video chat or capture software that you open. Annoying. Nice color, nice frame rate, nice focus, decent zoom, looks nice, bright when dark. Very powerful mic. The headset that came with isn't too bad either but it seems fragile. Hercules support is the best I've ever seen, they respond in less than a day and they really put a lot of effort into your answers. Cons: Incompatible with Linux. I heard it USED to work with older kernels but not anymore. Its just stupid how this camera doesn't work but other models do. If you want a good, cheap webcam compatible with linux, go with the Hercules Classic. In windows, the software is really bad. Its slow, bloated, and prevents anything higher than 800x600 when as far as I'm aware, is more CPU intensive than webcam intensive. If you try recording higher than 640x480, the video playback is slower than the sound. Other Thoughts: For windows, definitely worth getting for the price. If you want better resolution, use a different program than what is supplied. If you want something linux compatible, get a different camera 2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. Did you?
