Great and reliable drive
Pros: Cheap and reliable.
Cons: PATA interface (But that is what I bought is for), make a weird smell when burning a disk.
Other Thoughts: I don't know why the thing smell bad when burning a disk, but it's neglegable.

Pros: In the begining the unit worked flawlessly.
Cons: After 4 months of service the DVD writer no longer writes correctly. Sony service is what it is, non-existant.
Other Thoughts: Go with an ASUS. Much less money and much more reliable.

Does its job
Pros: Sleek design (I love the choice of face plates). Easy install. Has not burned any coasters since I got it. Was able to use the pearl tray cover that comes standard with the white face plate with the black face plate. It looks gorgeous and blends into my case so nicely. Works with Vista64.
Cons: Was a little difficult to replace the face plate. Not too thrilled with the bundled burn software, but I wasn't too surprised it wasn't quite what I wanted. But it does enough functions to be useable, just not everything I'd like it to do.
Other Thoughts: I'm very pleased with this drive. I've also owned an external version of this (slightly slower burn rate) and it still works perfectly well as well and I had that for almost two years. It does its job and will probably buy a second internal one at some point to add to my case.

Sony dose it again
Pros: Burns like a champ. I have owned a 700, 730, 800, 830 and now an 840. All of them have worked great. I have burned maybe 15 dvds at 16x (what the discs are rated) and all of them have burned fine. This drive seems to be keeping up he good name of the DRU-XXX line of burners. Also love the interchangeable face plates.
Cons: Minor oddity on install. After I got all my IDE jumper settings right when it would boot to Windows it would blue screen before it would finish loading. I took the drive out, let it boot right, then put it back in and it was fine. My motherboards a bit frazzled so maybe it was not the drives fault. After that hiccup everything works great. Not sure whos fault it was so I won't hold it against the drive.
Other Thoughts: When am I going to see some 20x certified discs? When are these going to be in a SATA version? (Not that it will really help the drive, I just want to be done with P-ATA.)

Top Notch Product
Pros: Fast DVD+R, DVD-R and CDR writing speeds. NO coasters when writing to Verbatim DVD+R media.
Cons: OCCASIONALY wont read a disc that I just burned without a computer re-start.
Other Thoughts: Many people bash a product because of their own lack of knowledge. Many of the "cons" mentioned are simply not related to the product reviewed. I have burned over 800 DVD movies with this drive, and have yet to produce a coaster. I have owned several Sony drives(DRU-710, 720,810,830) and have never had a failure. I have burned hundreds of CD's and THOUSANDS of DVD's with these drives and never had a drive failure. People complaining about coasters should be spending more for quality media. People mentioning multiple drive failures should probably not be building their own system. Either that, ir their luck is so bad that they should NEVER go outside in a thunder storm..........

Pros: It looks nice
Cons: First 4 audio CD's burned were coasters. Even though Nero ran the burn with no errors and said it was sucessfull, they would not play. I was using Sony CD's with the Sony burner. Also did not like that to burn at 48x, you must first put the CD in, wait until the light stops flashing, then you must HOLD the eject button in for 5 more seconds, until the light flashes again; then it is in "turbo" mode. Only then will it burn at 48x. That's stupid. It also creates 2 drive letters on XP. One for regular DVD burner, and one for DVD-ram burner. Even though it is one drive, to sucks up TWO drive letters! That's also stupid. Who burns DVD-ram anyway. Don't buy this drive.

Sony DRU-XX Series Products
Pros: Have purchased several of the Sony DRU-XX series of burners. All have worked perfectly. One of the highest rated burners along with the Plexor PX-800A. Also like the bindled Nero S/W
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: With few exceptions you wont beat Newegg prices so save your self some time and purchase at Newegg. Only wish they give additional discounts on volume for Computer Builders.

Buy as a FINAL resort
Pros: It works nice and fast. The Nero bundle that comes with it is awesome! So many applications with this bundle! The burner works great...when it works
Cons: I've had THREE of these die on me at different times. Granted they were a SLIGHTLY older model (the last one purchased was May 2007), but they shouldn't last a small amount of time. What do I mean by "die" ? Simple: They stop writing only dual layered (DL) DVD's. The single layered and the CD's work fine, but I've done a lot of DL-burning. Will get another brand next time
Other Thoughts: Purchase another brand before looking into this one.

Unable to play DVDs without additional software purchase!
Pros: Seems to be good quality hardware, as one expects from Sony.
Cons: The "software" bundle with this burner is insulting. If you install Nero 7 OEM burning, you get a handicapped 30-day DVD decoder, which won't even play back regular Dolby Digital sound. It prompts you to buy the Dolby Digital plug-in. AND prompts to buy the DVD decoder too!
Other Thoughts: Considering the higher price of Sony products, it's offensive that they no longer include the expected items in a RETAIL boxed burner. NO recordable DVD-/+R, NO IDE data cable, NO audio cable, and NO useful software to play back DVDs. Other brands offer more in retail packaging.

Extremely dependable
Pros: I have the 820 and 830. both have each ripped and burned together around 500+ discs(Notta one coaster)! I'm sure this one is no slouch.
Cons: I dont have this one yet. But im getting it!!!
Other Thoughts: Wish the bluray writer would come down to a more affordable price Being a BRU its probably of the same quality line. PLEASE NOTE THAT I ONLY EVER WRITE AT 4X SDEEDS. IVE ONLY USED 8X WHEN IM IN A HURRY.
