It is like the drive in my laptop
Pros: Good price, does what it is supposed to do. USB powered so no adapter, great for those running out of space on their multiple-outlet. The included burning software is a plus.
Cons: not free
Other Thoughts: This unit is just like the optical drive in my laptop, but encased in a small plastic enclosure. I have to hold it down to keep it from moving when opening and closing the drive. I don't count this a 'con' because I knew this going in. So if you are looking for something a bit heavier, like the older Sony DRX-820U, then this Samsung drive is not for you.
BTW, I wish the included USB cable was longer.

Perfect
Pros: I used this drive for 3 operating hours every day for 2 weeks after it arrived. The device performed flawlessly every time, including burning several DVD-R discs. It continues to function properly to this date, but is no longer used as frequently.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: This device requires 2 USB ports in proximity to each other, as a single USB connection does not provide appropriate power to operate the drive correctly. Be aware that USB extension cables, unpowered or poorly-powered USB hubs, and some USB headers are to be avoided when using this drive.

Fits in the bag better that the mediabase of a Dell D430
Pros: Small size, decent performance, price (I got it on sale for $45, not $65). USB powered only, no need for a power cord. Standard USB mini-B connection - works with all my other "2-plug" USB cords and devices.
Cons: the cord could be a little longer (I'd recommend getting a USB cord from one of the 2.5" portable hard drives where the cord splits in the middle, letting you plug into either side of the laptop with both plugs, but that's jsut me. I have a couple of these cords from failed [or destroyed] portable hard drives anyway, which I use)
Other Thoughts: I have a Dell D430 laptop, which (by design, and I like it that way) has no internal optical drive. That's fine except Dell made a "media base" which makes your system about 1/2 inch thicker to add an optical drive. The other option is a specialty USB cord (Lookup dell d-bay) external drive which would still be $60-$80 depending on what type of optical drive you get for it, and would ONLY work with your dell laptop. I love dell, but if I scrap this laptop and get another, or if I'm at a friend's house and they dont have a burner (yeah right like that would happen), I should be able to use mine, so I got this, and it works great.

Pros: Small. USB powered. Inexpensive. Worked with just one of the 2 USB cables connected to my PC. Didn't try it on a laptop.
Cons: Super slow seeking. I've had slower spec drives that were much faster than this one. CD burning sure SEEMS slower than other 24X drives I've had. Using a 10ft. USB extension cable, the drive wouldn't work consistently. Although small in size, it is quite heavy.
Other Thoughts: The slow seeking speed made this drive for me too unpleasant to be useful, and its weight made using it as an occasional laptop accessory not something I'd want to do.

Samsung DVD External
Pros: Amazing drive. Works flawless with my HP Mini! On top of that the Black and silver color scheme match the Mini perfectly.

Works Well
Pros: No Power adapter, Nero 8 included, and Price.
Cons: Looooooooong install.
Other Thoughts: I installed this on my Aspire 1, seem to take 20 min. or so. I've burned 3 DVDs and it was pretty fast, did not notice any noise like some of the other reviewers mentioned.

CD Drive
Pros: Very quite, fast, simple plug and play
Cons: Kinda weird but I had to connect the cable to my computer before the cd drive to make it work, my computer would recongize the cd drive when i pluged it in the drive first, thats the only problem i had and it wasnt a hard fix

Samsung
Pros: Worked right out the box with no power cable. Even installed windows on new builds with no drivers. Burned Maxel brand dvd+r disks at 8x with active@iso no coasters at all.
Cons: The accompanying cd didn't work... Would not load nero or the firmware updates or the dvd's drivers. Good thing it worked out of the box.
Other Thoughts: Waiting on Newegg to ship me my new one to see if a different cd will work but I doubt it. Samsungs website was little help.

Pros: Amazing little burner, I have ran this through all DVD formats including cdr as well, one USB powers fine even with burning longer dual layer dvd's. I can't believe how small this thing is.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Samsung yet delivers another amazing product. Newegg has super fast shipping as always.

Works great
Pros: Works great even using just 1 usb port. Only weighs about a pound. No drivers needed on XP.
Cons: none so far
Other Thoughts: I use it on my HP mini 2140 (fantastic netbook) and it works great every time.

So Far So Good
Pros: Not too expensive. Works as advertised. Slim and light.
Cons: Requires two USB ports.
Other Thoughts: For netbooks, this is a great choice. At least it's smaller and lighter than my Mini-9.

A Five Egg Unit
Pros: Small, fast, portable...a very nice unit.
Cons: The first one was not-quite-dead on arrival....but close. No plug'n play, no nothing. The second one worked right out of the box...no problem. The con is that I had to pay (censored) to RMA to get what I paid for. Would rather not have gotten a dead/dying unit in the first place.
Other Thoughts: If you get a unit that sorta kinda almost works, don't waste your time trying to 'fix' it.

So far so good
Pros: Works great so far. I'm using it to rip my DVD collection and it works pretty well. Nice and quiet and fast enough for me.
Cons: None yet.
Other Thoughts: I like that it is squared off and not rounded on the edges. Lets me put it anywhere.

Worth it
Pros: I work on a lot of computers and this saves me a lot of time not switching out bad optical drives ESPECIALLY on laptops! USB powered is cool!
Cons: not all computers boot from a USB cd drive :( *cough* Gateway *cough* yet... but most will
Other Thoughts: if u r a computer tech this is a must have!

Nice drive, works well
Pros: Worked perfectly with my Mini9 and AspireOne. Installed Windows 7 on both with no problems. WinXP had no trouble recognizing drive.
Cons: Sometime needs a little extra push to get the cd tray back into the housing. Feels like the front of the housing may be a little small. Also, went on sale w/ free shipping a week after I ordered. Bummer.

Excellent and sturdy
Pros: Plug in and off you go. This is NOT a cheaply made unit, this thing is sturdy. Burns FAST, plays back perfectly, haven't found anything to complain about at all. I don't use the included software from Nero so I'm not sure if that stuff is any good. This is an excellent drive at an excellent price.
Cons: None that I have found so far at all.
Other Thoughts: USB powered only and it takes up 2x USB slots - which for me is no big deal, plus I knew that when I bought it - make sure you understand that before you order it - there is no port at all for external power on this device.

Just enough
Pros: I did not want a clunky power adapter for my slim drive. It was very simple to flash firmware to get whatever they fixed. It read CD with one USB inserted. Excellent price from Newegg.
Cons: It could not read a DVD with only one USB inserted but ws OK with two. Read error correction not as good as my internal drives so I looked for updated firmware, hoping it improves that. Discard the nero software, don't need it. Clicking and racket from the drive is noisy.
Other Thoughts: If you need more power for burning use a USB hub having a 110V power adapter -- it won't take more space and solves your need for more USB ports. Did a firmware update but don't know what improved. A portable device probably will show a lot of movies, so why does this do a poor job of reading through all the scratches on a typical DVD?

Be certain to upgrade firmware
Pros: Compact, light unit. 1" wider by 1.5" deeper than a DVD -- can't get much smaller than that. Study. Be certain to download autoupdater firmware utility and have it update your firmware (you can uninstall it after the firmware update). I only needed the single USB connection for the Thinkpad X200s. Netbooks may require both USB connectors. Nero 8 software installs easily and works. Great buy!
Cons: None.

Works Great
Pros: The drive works as designed, is reasonably fast adn very compact. As the specs state it doesn't need an external power supply, which is great. It also includes a funny little "CD Ejector" tool that prevents you from needed to use a paper clip to open the tray when the drive is unplugged.
Cons: The unit really does need both USB connectors plugged in for the extra current. It will spin up with just one plugged in, but doesn't have the power to read without both.

Solid, function and small
Pros: Small, efficient and practical- I just put it in my laptop bag for use with my netbook, which does not have a drive.
Cons: Tray feels flimsy when opening/closing, but I think it has more to do with the type of drive.
Other Thoughts: Burns, as advertised, at 8x. No problems with power supply- will run on my MSI wind netbook with just one usb port plugged in.

Great and slim
Pros: Small and slim - not much bigger than a double CD jewel case. Bus powered so no power cable and heavy wall wart to drag around.
Cons: None so far. Seemed a little tricky to use it to boot from. Maybe just the bus powered thing on the first try, but second try it worked fine.
Other Thoughts: Uses two USB ports to connect! Not a problem, I just didn't see it in the specs. I'm using this to install software on my netbook.

Great Netbook Drive
Pros: This Drive was found with my Dell mini 9 high off the bat. No neccessary driver search or settings, just plug in and go.
Cons: None I could think of!
Other Thoughts: If you are considering getting an external DVD for your netbook, this is the one you want to go with. No need to waste $100 on a drive that will do the same as this one.

Works with my Viliv S5
Pros: I bought this item hoping that it would work with my Viliv S5 while being powered by the S5's single USB port. And it does! I didn't even have the S5 plugged into its AC charger and the Samsung drive was being powered totally off the S5's USB port/battery. I even installed the included Nero Essentials CD to test it out...all off battery power.
Cons: None so far
Other Thoughts: This Samsung drive now turns my Viliv S5 into a tiny portable DVD player. I'm not sure how fast the S5's battery will be drained, but I'm sure I will be able to watch a full length movie and have power to spare.

Solid
Pros: Good read an write speeds. Solid drive all around.
Cons: Make sure you have 2 available USB connections on any machine you are using this on. Do NOT use it with a USB hub.
Other Thoughts: Excellent buy for the price, I nearly bought a DVD reader at the same price until I found this.

Good external drive, USB-powered
Pros: Works very well with my NC10/Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Haven't tried with Windows 7 RC yet, but imagine it will have similar performance. Does what it should and is USB-powered (very convenient)
Cons: Wish the price would come down a little bit since BluRay is up-and-coming, but otherwise none.
Other Thoughts: Burned Windows 7 RC ISO (~2.5GB) in 7 minutes using ImgBurn (both USBs plugged in). Steady rate of 8 MB/sec (~5.2x). Works well for burning audio CDs in iTunes. I only need it occasionally and it suits those needs perfectly. Samsung makes great products and Newegg is the only place I'll buy electronics/parts.

Very touchy
Pros: Very small Designed to be used w/o AC power
Cons: Will not function with multiple powered hubs I tried. Would not function with USB extension cables. Would not function with some USB ports on PC/laptop Included cable is very short Included cable must plug into two USB ports that are side-by side, extension cables would not work. Flimsy
Other Thoughts: Seriously, this is for laptop users that have an open pair of side-by-side USB ports. If you are thinking about a hub, or having the drive more than 10" away from the USB port you are going to have a problem.

Works fine with Lenovo x61t
Pros: 1) Works with Lenovo x61t 2) Light 3) Powered by USB cable 4) Black - Matching Lenovo's laptop
Cons: 1) The pointy corners, can improve if it is a little round 2) Non-lightscribe
Other Thoughts: If Samsung can even make this drive more slim, it would even be more appealing. A lot of users out there want the device to be as slim/light/compact as possible.

Pros: great price, sleek look, works fine
Cons: none so far
Other Thoughts: I bought this as an economical way to upload various software to a new netbook. I was a little concerned about power issues after reading the other comments. I thought I'd need a USB extension cord in order to get both plugs set up (one USB port on each side of the netbook). But I tried running the drive with just one USB port and it worked fine for me.

Works great, USB powered
Pros: USB powered, so no external power needed. Nice slim unit. Just plug it in and use it.
Cons: Not the fastest or quietest DVD burner out there. Comes with a very limited "essentials" version of Nero - would be much nicer if it came with a fully functional Nero.

Very Nice Little Drive
Pros: As slim as it gets. Instructions are basically, 1. plug it in. 2. Use it. At this price, you are not likely to find a deal like this in any store.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: a little sleeve should be nice, but not required.

Other Thoughts: When plugging the USB cable into the drive ensure that it clicks all the way in in. Initially I thought I had it plugged all the way in because the drive had power but it was not being recognized by my laptop. Easy fix.

Nice Compliment to ACER
Pros: This little DVD is the perfect compliment to the ACER Aspire. USB recocognized it immediately. Slim, lightweight - it fits neatly into the bag with the computer for on-the-go use.
Cons: Would have liked more color choices so the look would match the computer.

Plug and play with ACER Netbook
Pros: Works just fine with my Acer Netbook. I did not install any of the software it came with so I have not had the opportunity to do any "complex burning" just dragging and dropping files in windows to burn to disk.
Cons: None so far

Works Just Fine
Pros: USB powered, small, light, cheapest one at Newegg.
I installed it under XP and it worked without any additional software. I already had a full Nero copy so the included Nero essentials got tossed. It burns without errors and has read everything I needed it to. I don't really care about speeds as I use cd/dvd only occasionally. I have only ever used 1 USB connector on several portables and desktops.
Cons: Its a little heavier than it might be.
Other Thoughts: For me, cd's have gone the way of the floppy, but there are odd times that a cd or dvd is needed e.g. the occasional DVD movie when away from home or building a new system or loading software app's.
I bought a desktop Samsung DVD burner a couple of years back and it was totally unreliable - eventaully just threw it away and bought a NEC. I was a little concerned about this little guy but the good reviews here gave me courage. I chose it because it was the cheapest and I am happy to say it has not let me down.

Works great, breathed new life into a damaged MBP
Pros: This works great with my 3 year old MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.10. I dropped it and damaged the slot loading drive. This makes for a great replacement without having to replace the entire notebook. Since it is powered by an AC adapter instead of the two USB ports, I like it much better. I did not like a portable one I had earlier.
Cons: A little pricey.

Will not Boot DVDs on Acer AOD150

Pros: Good, solid drive. I'd used it on both an Asus EEE netbook (1000HA) and a custom build Windows Home Server with no complaints.
Cons: Would be nice if it came with a carrying case.
Other Thoughts: I haven't burned anything with the drive, nor do I expect to. For installing apps and OS's, it does the job well.

Great!
Pros: Plug and play. Lightweight. Quiet. Fast -- it seems to run CDs/DVDs faster than my built in optical drive on my laptop. Burns are accurate. Haven't had any dead DVDs yet.
Cons: Haven't been able to get it to burn at the supposed 8x. The highest speed it has ever reached so far is 5x.
Other Thoughts: Great product for the price. Would've been nice if it had lightscribe but then it woulda been more expensive.

Nice little drive
Pros: Small, quiet, handles all kinds of media and seems to read and write everything reliably. No separate power brick is a huge plus.
Cons: Needs two open USB ports, which may be hard to come by on many systems. It's not a problem for me, but some might prefer the option of using an external power supply if it would save a port. The drive is about as small as you could reasonably wrap around an object the size of a CD disc, but it still looks amazingly large next to my netbook -- no wonder they don't build optical drives into those machines. It is lightweight and plastic, and probably wouldn't survive a fall from a 5-story building, but seems sturdy enough for normal use.
Other Thoughts: I bought this mainly to work with my Asus Eee PC 901 to install operating systems, and it has worked flawlessly for that purpose.

Excellent drive, forget the software
Pros: Reads CDs and DVDs perfectly, plays movies on DVD perfectly. Burns CDs just fine PROVIDED you don't use the included Nero 8 Essentials software that the docs say you must use. I haven't had occasion to burn DVDs yet. I would cheerfully give the drive 5 stars if they'd included better software.
Cons: Unlike some others I had no problem installing the Nero 8 software. But the drive then would not burn a usable disc. Testing with Nero ScanDisk showed MASSIVE damaged sectors and many completely unreadable sectors last half of the disc. Tried Nero 7 Essentials instead and it still would not produce anything but coasters. Decided the drive was worthless, requested a RMA from NewEgg and they promptly sent me one. But then on a whim I tried installing an old copy of Nero OEM Suite (Nero 6.x) that NewEgg used to include with LiteOn optical drives, and to my surprise the Samsung drive worked just fine, burned discs with no errors at all. So I cancelled the RMA. Samsung really should look into providing some better software with this drive, because they're sure not doing the product any favors with Nero 8 Essentials.
Other Thoughts: I've used Nero since version 5 and always liked it better than Roxio. If you have a copy of the old Nero OEM Suite that has Nero Express 6.6, I think that's about as good as you can get and it has a lot of useful extras. The newer "Essentials" versions don't have as many features included and at best they don't seem to offer any real advantage over the older OEM suites -- and just aren't as reliable software besides, as my experience here shows. The Samsung drive does appear to be sensitive to having the right software as the docs suggest, it just isn't the software they provide with it.

Works great for servers.
Pros: Works great for installing from DVD media to older Dell servers that don't have an integrated DVD drive. No issues so far.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: Haven't tested the burning functions yet, but I don't anticipate any issues as Samsung usually makes pretty good stuff.

Pretty good, few problems
Pros: -Cheap -Great product for netbooks ( see other thoughts) -Works with Windows, Mac, And Linux -Comes with some software - Doesnt need to plug into wall
Cons: -Makes loud noise when running - Sometimes it wont eject the disk inserted in it - Power is limited by USB Y-cable
Other Thoughts: It's a great external DVD drive for a netbook. I ordered it with my Acer AOA110-1626 Linux netbook, 1 GB RAM, 16GB ssd. When playing a DVD (or anything, really) it will make loud noises, which isnt a real big deal. When i try to eject something in it by pressing the "eject" button, nothing happens. thankfully there is a manual ejection port.

Pros: Small, portable, no external power supply.
Cons: None really. Just be sure you have 2 USB slots open that are right next to each other. The cable isn't long enough to go around both sides of a laptop or netbook.
Other Thoughts: I got this for my new Asus EPC1000HE netbook so I could install Ubuntu on it. It actually works better than the internal drive on my desktop system, and is a bit quieter too. The USB power thing is nice as well, since I can now use both the drive and my EeePC for long periods of time without any power adapters to lug around with me.

Great portable drive for Netbooks
Pros: Plug and play (as long as you have 2 open usb ports next to eachother). Fast. Well constructed. Attractive desing. Slim. The answer to prayer for a netbook without an optical drive.
Cons: Not a con for me, but be sure you have 2 free usb ports to run this puppy.
Other Thoughts: If you have an ASUS Eee PC or and Acer Aspire One or MSI Wind or HP Mini, etc., get this drive now. Period.

Didn't work on my netbook
Pros: None! The drive arrived with no breakage, in very secure packaging, and yet, it didn't work AT ALL. I was very disappointed. No amount of changing USB ports could get it to power on.
Cons: Clearly, I got a dud, so its not fair to completely rip apart this external CD drive. However, if I randomly got a dud, it makes me wonder how many others Samsung manufactured? I am returning it for the higher end LG model, which I feel more confident will work when it arrives. Biggest con was the fact that I tried to use this on a netbook, and the Y USB power adapter is not long enough to plug into a USB port on either side of the Netbook. Since I own a Lenovo S10, I don't have 2 USB ports next to each other on the machine. Therefore, had the drive worked in the first place, I would have been stuck buying an extra cable if I wanted to power it from 2 USB ports. This alone was irritating enough to make me want to return it.
Other Thoughts: The manual is very unclear, and only comes on the installation CD. I would much rather have had a printed copy, because obviously, if I can't get the cd drive to work, how am I supposed to read the manual from a cd? It makes no sense! I had to go directly to the Samsung website to download the manual for troubleshooting. However, the manual was so vague it wasn't any help. This is definitely a lower end model. Kudos to you if you can get it to work, but seems like paying a little extra will get you something that will work the first time, for a long time.

Love It
Pros: Small, light, looks cool, come with a Y USB cable for faster transfers. Goes really fast. I made an image file that was almost 7 gigs in less than 40 minutes. Comes with a small pin so that you dont need it plugged in to open up the tray which can be very nice.
Cons: Read reviews saying the nero cd was useless so i never tried it. I already had Nero other tan that no cons i love it
Other Thoughts: Fast shipping like usual from NewEgg buy it its cheap and it works great

Pros: Small, Simple - As Advertised.
Cons: A little lightweight- but thats the point right?

Works great with a netbook
Pros: Works great with my http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115551
I've used it to load some applications as well as create ISO images for mounting and burning but...
Cons: The software it came with would not work at all. I had a Nero Essentials disc from my desktop PC and am using that on the netbook. Since CD authoring software is so prevelant, it should be hard to find something that will work but shipping it with a bogus disc is no excuse.
Other Thoughts: Nice and small, tucks away in the laptop bag when not in use and doesn't require an external power source. Make sure you have access to some other CD authoring software and don't count on the one including with this to work.

Great unit, lousy software
Pros: The unit works exceedingly well. I've bought it for use with an MSI Wind netbook and it's easily outperforming my Vaio desktop replacement (given the Vaio is several years old) at ripping my CDs to an MP3 collection. I'm using it with Easy CD-DA Extractor and Elaborate Bytes CloneCD (for copying proprietary data for biz purposes) and the whole process is flawless.
Cons: As many users have said, the bundled NERO is useless. I attempted installing it once for pure evaluation purposes. It put me in and endless loop on their website and I tossed the CD immediately. But for any moderate to advanced user, that shouldn't be a problem. There are lots of free / cheap alternatives.
Other Thoughts: I couldn't be happier with the unit from top to bottom. The USB power source maintains the superportablity of my netbook and the drive its self performs as well as I could expect.

works as expected
Pros: Simple and easy to use, windows xp recognized it without installing any drivers, runs off the two USB connections (no power cord needed)
Cons: a bit slower than the internal DVD drives I have but that is to be expected with a USB 2.0 connection I guess.

Hardware works Software worthless
Pros: Hardware works well with the Ulead Burn. Now software bundled with my MSI Wind U100.
Cons: Nero software included on the install disc is worthless. It seems primarily designed to capture youe email address and lock you into a web site to sell you Nero products. I could not get any of the Nero Essentials software to actually install.
Other Thoughts: As might be expected of a consumer electronics company, the hardware is good but the software is poor. The setup program and firmware update utility is hard to use and poorly translated to english.

Handy little drive
Pros: Very compact, only the size of a couple regular sized jewel cases together. No external power cord needed, runs off of a single USB port, or 2 USB ports if required with the included cable. Quiet. Kind of classy looking for the money. Plays DVD's/CD's just fine.
Cons: Can't use if your notebook/netbook is low on battery power since there is no external power.
Other Thoughts: This drive is for pure convenience with a small footprint. Does what it says. Requires power solely from your PC/LapTop. I enjoy it for these reasons. No extra cords to carry. I have watched several DVD's and installed software while the netbook (ASUS 1000HE) is running on battery only. No problems.

So small -- so good!
Pros: Great deal on sale -- works very well. Bought this to use with my Netbook and was really happy that it was so easily powered by my Eee PC. After realizing how quiet it was I now use it on my desktops to watch stuff and listen to recorded music. To be honest I didn't think such a small reader would be this good -- I haven't bothered to Record with it as I just use my regular buildin ones.
Cons: Can usually find a con, but not for the price and what it was intended for.
Other Thoughts: Glad I bought it -- the size is great for travelling with.

Great netbook drive
Pros: Works like it should. Only need to use 1 USB port since my netbook provides enough power.
Cons: Gives off a bit of vibration just enough to possibly annoy people around you. Not as bad as a cell phone vibration, but loud enough to be audible.
Other Thoughts: This drive DOES work with only USB power. It has a dual-USB cable just like other portable drives that allow you plug into another port in case your computer cannot provide the juice. I've tried this drive in 2 netbooks (Asus N10J and Asus EEE 904) along with a full-sized Toshiba laptop and a desktop, and I have yet to need both USB cables.

Cons: Useless as a burner! The Nero 7 software is a JOKE! Took 4 installation attempts. (Do not try to install while connected to internet. System can tell that Nero is old, and keeps logging onto internet to download updated version AT $50 BUCKS!! The web page it took me to also kept freezing my comp) After at least 4 attempts I got it installed. However it is not the full version, so you can't really burn anything! I was able to play a cd and DVD, that is all. NO BURNING CAN BE DONE WITH PROVIDED SOFTWARE.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS OVER PRICED PAPER WEIGHT. I AM SO MAD.
Other Thoughts: NERO COMPANY SHOULD BE PUT OUT OF BUSINESS FOR WASTING PEOPLES TIME. MANY REVIEWS ON INTERNET STATE PROBLEMS WITH NERO SOFTWARE. EVEN THE NEW NERO 9 IT EXPECTS ME TO PAY 50 BUCKS FOR SO I CAN BURN WITH MY "BURNER".

Awesome
Pros: Does what it says, works flawlessly with all cd' and dvd's.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Use it with my Dell Mini 9 and just the one usb plugged in powers it, no need for both.

Nice and compact
Pros: No stupid "brick on a rope" power supply USB powered! Light weight, but not cheap feeling, about as portable a drive as possible. Weighs a little more than my Sony noise-cancelling headphones. Will work using one USB port, but it likes to have 2 - see Other Thoughts for more on that. Nice rubber dots for feet keeps it in place on a desk, except when loading a CD/DVD - a second hand is needed to hold it down when inserting.
Cons: N/A
Other Thoughts: *Can* use two usb ports. I wrote a CD, and Nero (that comes with it) would only write at 10X (that is 10X CD, not 10X DVD speed). It comes with this Y cable that can plug into two USB ports, so I then plugged in using two USB ports. Now it writes at 24X. My Dell Mini 9 has two ports on the one side, but I need to use a USB hub on the remaining 3rd port to plug in my external mouse and keyboard, or just use one port for this drive, which works. Maybe a con, maybe not, seeing as it WILL run on the one USB port if neccessary, just a little slower is all. It knows the difference and didn't fail with one USB port. It slowed down to use less power is all, a really nice little unit. If wanting a drive solely for a desktop, I could see something bigger and heavier would be better, with a motorized loader, but for a drive to go with my 9 inch Dell mini laptop, anything bigger with yet another cord for power would be stupid, and would weigh more than it does!

Perfect for Netbooks
Pros: Fast Error free burning Can use as a boot device on net-book small and thin light
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: Actually this is awesome for the new netbooks. Fast and error free burning. No issues reading, writing DVD media. I found I only needed one usb cable (MSI Windbook) instead of two that they want us to use.

Pretty Cool Drive
Pros: Drive Needs Nothing More Than USB Quiet Running Seems to Work Well Even Under Stress Even Works on Dell Mini 9!
Cons: Spin Up Can Be On The Slow Side DVDs Sometimes Take a While To Load Nero Disc Don't Work (May Just Be Mine)
Other Thoughts: This drive does exactly what I need it to do, which is install CDs and Burn CDs on the go. And it does it pretty well so far. However, it can take a while sometimes. And it might just be mine, but the Nero disc refuses to load... But I don't need it anyway. Thanks to Newegg, it was well worth the money.

A MUST for any Netbook
Pros: I bought this drive along with my purchase of a MSI Wind. I choose this drive since it matched the color of the netbook and could run off USB power. A external disk drive is a must for any netbook. I used it to install Windows 7 and took about the same as my laptop with a built in drive (35 min). The burn speed is a tad slower than my notebook burner that is rated at the same 8X DVDR. Over all a nice slender design. I also imagine you can take the drive out and install it into a notebook if need to. This drive is Basically a notebook drive enclosed with a USB. And more plus is NERO 7 with Nerovison =)
Cons: As I said a tad slower than a built in 8X DVDR that come in notebooks but to be expected since data is being transfered over USB. The one USB cord for the drive is nice but it dose require two powered USB ports (you can't by-pass it by connection both to a mini usb hub or using a single USB cable Male to Mini). As for weight the drive is much lighter than a 5.25" drive but for a slim drive it is a bit on the heavy side. I also was considering other slim DVDR's with the ability to do Lightscribe, this one dosen't have it. not a deal breaker by anymeans but for a few extra bucks Newegg sells slim DVDR drive with it. just keep in mind if you like Lightscribe.
Other Thoughts: Overall 4 out of 5. Does the job well and for the price you can't go wrong. If you are looking to get a companion for a netbook you should get this drive to get the most from your dollar. I think this Samsung drive offers a good overall package. I will say it is not the smallest or the lightest drive around, but it makes the job easy when you are looking to burn, rip or watch a DVD or serves as a good host drive if you want to burn a copy. Good Job Newegg. Fast shipping =)

Pros: I bought this to go with the Sammy netbook I also purchased at the same time. I haven't had an issue with it and has worked to my expectations. Powers up from laptop itself wcich is great. I like how small and compact the unit is as well
Cons: I would like for it to have come with a/c power capabilities as well but i can live without is.

It takes electricity to spin a disc drive...
Pros: Bad drive - NOT RECOMMENDED, but I will acknowledge these good things:
Slim Design. Looks cool. Comes with Nero express burning software.
Rectangular edges (straight forward design) make it mountable and stackable.
Cons: Weak reading discs with errors. Takes two USB ports to run well. This drive has no external power source, so it gets its power only through the USB port(s), and that's just not enough power to run a spinning drive. Poor design choice. Bad product.
I will try to return this drive, and try out the Plextor PX-Q840U. Plextor has never let me down. Samsung hadn't until this one. I'll review the plextor after the same test, in a week or so.
I'm annoyed that Samsung is selling this kind of junk - 2 USB port cable?! Seems like a last minute ghetto rig fix if you ask me... and it still doesn't work right.
Other Thoughts: What is the first thing anyone does when they get a cd/dvd writer? Copy something... right? Why not the software disc that came with the drive? Tried this, copy hung at 85%, with 'unrecoverable read errors'. Now, I mention this because I also got 'unrecoverable read errors' in the built-in drive in my laptop. HOWEVER, the built in drive was able to skip them, and make the copy. This drive was not - copy just hung, no copy made.
A device like a CD/DVD drive simply requires more power than a USB port puts out. AVOID.

Perfect for what I needed
Pros: Slim, plays DVDs well, only one cable (USB, no power cable!)
Cons: Takes up 2 USB ports (I'm assuming so that it doesn't require an extra power cable, but still a little irritating if you've got a limited number of ports and/or a lot of devices)
Other Thoughts: I recently purchased a 42" HDTV to use as a monitor for my HTPC running Vista/Windows Media Center. Unfortunately, the HTPC didn't fit in the entertainment center I bought, so I had to put it behind everything, which meant that the DVD drive fairly inaccessible. Fortunately, I found this drive. Very high WAF, since it means that the big ugly HTPC can remain out of view, and the DVD drive is both accessible and nearly invisible. I put it right next to the base of the TV, so you can hardly see it from the couch.

Average
Pros: USB powered.
Cons: It's a little larger than the two Sony models I had before, about an inch longer. I guess that's the trade off for being USB powered.
Other Thoughts: It's has a clean design but doesn't out perform any other burner in it's price range.

Quick, solid and portable
Pros: Worked right out of the box with my Asus EeePC 1000HA running WinXP. Have also attached it to a Compaq Evo N610c and it is recognized and works fine there as well. Have burned 20+ DVD-Rs and several CDRWs with no quality issues (using Verbatim DVD-Rs and DeepBurner portable). Burns at advertised speeds and is recognized each time I plug it in. An additional note: Have been running Win7 Beta for the past week and this drive functions just as well. Excellent portable DVD/CD drive!
Cons: By design, you must have two USB ports side by side to plug the drive into the PC/laptop. Not much of an issue with most machines.
Other Thoughts: I haven't tried the Nero disk provided with the drive as I usually use DeepBurner (which has worked fine with the drive).

Netbook users dream
Pros: Using a Asus 1000H without problems. The pros are a fast reliable cd rom drive. Makes flawless cd's. Plays movies without any problem.
Cons: The cons are that I have to plug it into the Asus after it is booted or the disks just spin in the drive. I guess the drivers don't load otherwise, but I can live with that small flaw. Also it is a little noisy at times, but what high speed rom drive isn't.
Other Thoughts: Have not burned a dvd yet but since the cd burning is flawless, dvds should be to with good media.
