Rating + 5 Nice Camcorder

Pros: Does what it is supposed to do. Smaller than I expected. Good LCD display Controls are in logical locations.

Cons: none so far.

Other Thoughts: This is my first camcorder and I was suprised how easy it was to setup on windiws XP. I got the Rosewill RC-502 (great deal) which includes the cable, plugged it in and windiws recognised it and started using it without loading any drivers. I though it was broke but it worked. Pluged the camcorder into the firewire and boop-boop, windows picked it up and offered to start moviemaker (included with XP).

Moviemaker downloaded the videos and that was that.

It doesn't get much easier than this.

An angry custormer
Tech Level: low
Ownership: less than 1 day
This user purchased this item from Newegg

Rating + 1 Never buy this model and from NewEgg

Pros: None, sorry for my angry. This is first time I wrote such a bad review about any online store.

Cons: 1. The motor of the MiniDV tape system is really noisy! The tape I used is TDK MiniDV tape I just bought from a local Costco store. The microphone can pick up the high-pitch noise easily. When I played it back, it is like you are on a air field with a jet nearby with full throttle and going to take off. Is this problem for the one I had right now or just for all this canon model
2. Strange vertical blue stripe
If you shoot indoor at night and if there is a incandescent light bulb in the view, there will be a vertical blue stripe cross the screen passing that bulb. It
happens on both vertical and horizontal holding position. The number of vertical blue stripes depend on how many bulbs in the view. It is worse when
using tape than SD card. It is worse when using video mode than camera mode. It is worse when there is a mirror also in the view.
3. REALLY REALLY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE, see balow

Other Thoughts: BE CAREFUL with this company
If you ask for exchange, and ship thing back, they will just told you the item you got doesn't match with their system record, and just ship thing back to you.
Be careful when you buy from Newegg and check your item serial number before your use it.

Pros: Great Camera. Mmall.

Cons: Motor Noise. When using movie maker, I either lower the volume level on the video or add music

Must use Firewire to transfer videos. Firewire cable not included. USB port is for still images or low quality videos recorded on the SD card

Rating + 5 Canon Elura - bang for buck

Pros: Good battery life. Great options for card images or video. Interface is perhaps simple for some, but offers enough options for most casual users.

Video quality is pretty good. Outside or good lighting, and it performs as good as I need. Low level light, and things get dark, typical situation.

I went with this over a Panasonic, partly because my wife uses it and a simple interface is needed, partly because of the larger ccd vs 3 smaller ones. Reviews state this to be a good solid product with fair low level light recording, and I would agree. Luckily my nephew has the Panasonic one I was debating over, and I can't really tell the difference between the two, in any conditions.

This has been problem free for a couple months now, rolled through a dozen tapes with no problems. The wife is comfortable operating it. It was a pretty good deal.

Cons: No con's really to speak of. As with all camera's of this range, low level light means dark pictures.

Other Thoughts: Battery life is much better than I expected. I get 2 hours out of a full charge with a lot of on - film - pause - film - pause - film - off - on - repeat again type of filming.

My impression having access to the Panasonic of comparable features, Canon perhaps feels a little more rugged.

Pros: Bought this cam a week ago. I researched a lot before buying this camera. very happy so far with the purchase. compact size. picture clarity is awesome. can't get any better for this price

Cons: I had read people's review about motor noise. well its definately there, however so far I didn't find it bad at all. Cam is somewhat erganomically challenged. Canon could have done better job for button placement. No firewire included in pack.

Other Thoughts: This a definately a good camera in this price range. recommended.

Rating + 5 Get this One--Great camcorder

Pros: This is an all around high quality camcorder at an entry level price.
I love tve this camera. Bought it after hrs. upon hrs. of research online and in-store.
Owned a Sxxy for 48 hours. had to sell it it on my own because Sxxy would not take it back.
This one blows it away at every turn.

Cons: The buttons can be a bit confusing in the start--a little intimidating until you get it down.

Other Thoughts: This the the only piece of electronic equiptment that is going for the same price as when I bought it. Even more in some cases.

Rating + 4 Ok for now

Pros: Great speed of light.
Got it in 2 days. Newegg Rocks.

This is not for making movies to go in theaters.
I got it to hook it up to GPS mount on my car so that I can
record what car cut in front of me. And post them on websites.
This is good enough.
Will report again after February 2007 after I use this to tape a wedding in Las Vegas.

Cons: The LED lights don't make much difference. Don't record at night. Don't record at low level light. There is no way you can get TV or movie quality at low light with this. Try the camdorders at over $1000, maybe they will work. If you know about hacking camcorders, you can change the LEDs to infared, which helps a little. (Search this on DIY)
Battery is good for about 30 minutes average on recording.
Up to a max of 1.5 hours if record with all lights off. I did this test with full battery at midnight pointing it at a clock.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you get Rosewill RC-502 from Newegg if you don't have it, and batteries (Not from Newegg)

Rating + 5 Works good

Pros: Don't worry about the tape motor unless you are a low talker. I talk really loud, and the tape motor sound pales in comparison even when recording from across the room. Color is good, picture is good.

Cons: Could probably have come with a firewire cable, or maybe a mini-DV to test it out with. Either of those would have been nice.

Other Thoughts: Don't think that you are going to be able to transfer anything through your USB. This is not possible with any digital camcorder really. You are going to need to use firewire, and that might mean you will need to buy a firewire card for you computer.

Rating + 5 Solid

Pros: Using this to output analog video to a DataVideo analog/digital converter, pulling audio into the converter from a Mackie mixer. Taking the output from the converter via firewire to a Firestore. This setup records VERY high quality. I am thoroughly impressed with the audio/video I get with this setup.

Cons: The built in digital converter (used only if you're pulling audio in via the line-in/mic jack and sending it out through the Firewire/USB) is OK if you're just using it for home use, but if it's a high quality application, you can hear VERY FAINTLY a clicking as the analog/digital conversion goes on. This is something that anyone who doesn't deal with A-V stuff regularly will most likely never hear. The only other problem is that the thin, cheap remote will not work from the rear of the unit.

Other Thoughts: This is one of those that you definitely get more than what you paid for (except for remote function). I'm very pleased with it.

Pros: smaller than most camcorders, good features, quality, lcd screen, ease of use. The fades and other features are sweet. Price to performance ratio is the best with this camera

Rating + 5 Smart choice for camcorder

Pros: Excellent image quality, and has mic in which not many camcorders at this level have. High quality.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Can't beat what you get for the price. I'm guessing canon will phase out these kinds of SD cameras with options like mic in soon, so get it while you can.

Pros: Excellent picture, 16:9 picture ratio. Can be used as an analog-to-digital converter with older camcorders.

Rating + 4 Nice camcorder for the price

Pros: I have owned a few camcorders, this one is nice and small, very simple design, easy to use.

Cons: Battery located on the 'inside' so can't use larger capacity battery. Tape noise is quite loud in quiet settings. No 'shoe' for external mic

Other Thoughts: I didn't think that the tape noise would be bad, but it was worse then expected. Have to get an external microphone for use in quiet settings. If it is noisy out, then you won't hear the tape much.

Pros: * Compatible with Mac
* Old tapes work
* Similar functions/features/layout to the Cannon ZR10

Cons: * Same tape eject mechanism.

Other Thoughts: The tape eject mechanism on our Cannon ZR10 malfunctioned. Since it was out of warrenty, we bought this to replace it.

We were concerned that it would continue to work with our Mac Mini and our old tapes. It works fine.

Rating + 5 Old technology? I think not.

Pros: 1. Requires little or no technical knowledge to get started.
2. Captures true widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) video - none of the usual clipping to create the illusion of letterbox format.
3. Has an external microphone jack.
4. Was ranked at the top of the Mini-DV class by all well-known technology rating sites.
5. Fantastic price-to-value ratio.
6. Very compact - it fits into my flannel shirt pocket.

Cons: 1. Somewhat cheesy hand strap.
2. The "joystick" does not seem as robust as the one on my previous Sharp NV-1000.

Other Thoughts: The package comes without an IEEE-1394 firewire cable, but that is hardly a big deal, as many PCs lack the necessary port.

As always, NewEgg was spot on with the delivery of the goods, and provided an extremely competitive price. I ordered the stuff on the Thursday before Christmas for surface transport, and it was delivered on Tuesday morning. How's that for service, eh?

Pros: Very compact, great price, voted best camcorder 2007 under $400 price range

Cons: Not suitable for very low light conditions.

Other Thoughts: Wish the cable to transfer video to PC came with it, the supplied USB cable can only transfer stills and video from the memory card. to transfer the miniDV to PC you need to purchase a firewire cable

Cons: Lack of fireware cable. Hard to find 4pin - 4pin at a good price. average price was like $28

Other Thoughts: Overall great buy but if your going to buy the camcorder and want to transfer to a PC order the firewire 4pin-4pin also.

Pros: Great value for the features. External mic (although I haven't used it yet). Long battery life.
Good picture quality.

Cons: Joystick is small and awkward to use. Focus button is not easily accessed by finger. Picture grainy with low light.

Other Thoughts: I researched the camcorder market before making my purchase and found the Elura 100 to be the best value. I am happy with purchase and with Neweggs' service as usual.

Rating + 4 Execellent Camera

Pros: Execellent camera.

Cons: BEWARE:
I have problem using 1GB SD memory by 'micro center'. After taking roughly 10 photos, it give me 'CARD ERROR'. After switching off then on, I was able to take another 1 to 2 photos and got the same "card Error" msg. I bought 512MB SD card by 'Ultra' which works fine. So all SD card won't work with this camera.

Pros: this is my first cam I ever own and ever used. It only took me about an hour to read the instruction and figure it out, pretty easy to use and quility is awesome.Nothing beat the $xxxs.Impress with the light, clear and bright.I used it to tape the live show from Idol (kellie pickler) awesome, sounds great and clear.
It's going to trip with me to FL, CHINA and HI. It fit right in my jacket's pocket

Cons: the motor noise is a little loud, but you probably wound;t even know it if you are taping a party or outdoor. no biggie.
Doesn't come with the firewire DV cable
the picture SDcard quality is BAD, but hey, non of Them are good out there

Other Thoughts: shipping is fast Newegg, good job.

Pros: Awesome little thing. This thing is about as big as my old Canon Power Shot A80 digital camera! This thing is top of the line in it's price range, you will need to shell out few hundred $$$ more to get anything better. Can't go wrong here.

Cons: No fire wire cable? Just get one for $1.99 right here.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you pick up free 6-pack of tapes free, while you can.

Rating + 5

Pros: Excellent video quality for the price. Analog to digital pass thru a bonus. Despite internal battery, this unit gets over 2 hours which is what some "extended life" batteries offer. Offers decent manual settings and superb "point and shoot" functionality.

Cons: "Joystick" in my unit sloppy and requires care to prevent entering a function when simply trying to navigate. Size combined with poor control placement an issue to some. *6 pin/4 pin DVI/Firewire cable not included* - Add to your order to avoid the ridiculous markup in most local markets.

Other Thoughts: This model has some issues as stated but for the price to performance ratio, this is an excellent choice. My wife who has zero experience was "up and running" with this unit in no time. As always, the Eggcellent service made the purchase a breeze.

Rating + 5 Rated Camcorder of the Year - 2006

Pros: Shoots in natural widescreen with the flick of a button. LCD viewer is nice and big; also in widescreen. Colors are awesome. Analog to digital pass through works great. Shoots to video to MMC card as well as JPEG.

Cons: Doesn't shoot wel in low light, but none of the Canons do. Rocker button for menu a bit too small.

Other Thoughts: This camera wasn't rated Camera of the Year in three different ratings websites for nothing. Price against performance this camcorder is worth buying. For the low light problem, just provide extra ambient light and the problem is solved.

Get two and pack one away.

Rating + 5 Love this camera

Pros: Great camera for the price and it's easy to use. Only have had it for a week and know my way around it pretty good. Records with a good picture and mic is real sensitive . Zoom is also good and the stabilizer is a real nice addiction to this cam. I shopped around and compared with a few Sony and JVC but this camera won in all area in this price range. Buy while supplies last. Easy to hook to pc with right cable.

Cons: Buy a firewire cable if you want to hook to your pc. (Link Depot 10 FT FIREWIRE (IEEE 1394) 6 PINS TO 4 PINS cable Model 1394-10-6p4p - OEM) sold here for $x

Other Thoughts: Once I plugged in the cam to the pc and turned it on my pc found it and was ready to transfer the video to pc(XP-sp2 OS). (make sure you have a firewire connection before you buy the cable.

Rating + 5 Awesome Camcorder!!

Pros: This camcorder has everything you can need, and is much better than the competition in it's class. Very easy to use, and the manual is very instructive. This has definetly become my new best friend!

Cons: Wish it had a thicker strap like the Sony's, but I won't pay extra for that!

Other Thoughts: If you are seriously considering a bargain priced camcorder with the best features, this it it. I took several months to compare specs between this one and several other camcorders, and kept on coming back to this one. It even includes free tapes and shipping! Great Buy!

Rating + 5 Excellent camcorder

Pros: This is a great camera for people who want a camera that they can use right out of the box with minimal setup (easy mode), or those who want to do a lot more. The advanced features are great and I am continually trying to see how far I can take this. This works very well with different filters, telephoto and macro lenses. It is a very small camera, which I like since I like to do low-profile shooting in public.

Cons: The display is a little confusing at times and the exposure and focus features are a little confusing. Battery life is average, but that's to be expected. The mount for filters is only 27mm, which is very small, but this is a tiny camcorder, so there is a trade-off.

Other Thoughts: Overall, this is great value. Newegg, as always, shipped this super quick. Great price point for this and a good starting point for those learning more about digital videography. One word of advice, if you buy this: read the manual. You'll be glad you did.

Rating + 5 Excellent Video/Still Image Quality for $300 range

Pros: 1. Excellent still image quality (even better than my 500MBytes Olympus digital camera in some sense)
2. Acceptable video quality (it is not as good as $1500 camcorders, but it is acceptable)
3. Joystick navigation is easy
4. Wide LCD
5. Small size (very handy)

Cons: 1. Motor sound during recording is a bit noisy.
2. Needs Firewire 1394 card/cable for capturing video.

Other Thoughts: Newegg sent this to me within two days! Newegg rules!

Rating + 5 Excellent video quality

Pros: Great video quality, very good sound, good low light. The image stabilizer works very well and true widescreen mode is a very nice feature on such a budget camera

Cons: Might be a bit too small for some people. For someone with average sized hands for a guy, it seems to handle just fine.

Other Thoughts: Motor noise has been an issue many people have mentioned. I only notice it in quiet environments. Even then, it's not terrible. It's about the same volume of noise as my old Canon ES 75, but it's higher pitched, which might explain why it's bothered some people. Considering its small size, I was disappointed at the need to use both hands. I needed my left had when pressing the joystick button inwards, you have to press pretty hard, too hard I think.

Pros: I set it on the easy mode and never change it. It has plenty of future options when I feel more confident using it, but the easy mode may be all I need!

Cons: Hmmm. Cannot really think of any other than it is a little awkward to hold and reach some controls. Might not be an issue for someone with smaller hands or more dexterity :-) Still, no biggy.

Other Thoughts: Easy to hear breathing through the built-in microphone. Gotta get used to breathing carefully while using. Might try an external mike to solve that problem. Might give it higher rating if I was more knowledgeable about other similar cameras.....

Rating + 5 Get it before you can't !!

Pros: I own several camcorders - Mini DV tape. I hesitated for quite some time about this camcorder because of the reviews that state a noise during playback in quiet situations. It's no different than any othre mini DV camcorder. It's small....real small. You can and will take it everywhere. You will leave it on your table at home and use it too, because it's there. The battery is internal and lasts over 2 hrs using the LCD! These isn't a smaller more durable or nicer min DV camcorder out there today. Especially for this price. I borrowed this camera from a friend and tried it out in various situations. It was flawless. Colors dead on and natural. What a pleasure to won and use. It's my new favorite toy.

Cons: Canon has discontinued this camera for 2007. They made it cheaper now and bigger. This is because most companies are moving towards mini DVD's, which aren't that great yet. The compression and picture is better on DV tape. That's whay News teams and Pro's are still using DV tape and the big buck Pro camcorders are still tape as well.

Other Thoughts: I spoke to the sales rep at C City about this camcorder. She said it was wonderful and sold it as her first choice to everyone. She was sad that they no longer carry it and have a cheaper version with a battery hanging off the back. Guess where my Alura 100 is right now... In my wifes small pocketbook. It's that small that she carries it with her all the time.

Rating + 5 Sweet and small camera

Pros: Well, I have read a lot of reviews for various camcorders before investing in this camcorder. The main negative points in revious about this camera turned out to be false for me. One negative review mentioned the joystick's double function as an enter button. The enter button takes quite some pressure, and I have no problem using the directional function of the joystick without accidentally pressing enter.

Quite a small form factor for the camera also. The strap is nice, the widescreen is nice. The mic does pick up some tape noise, but every camcorder will pick up *some* such noise, and that is what the MIC jack is for. You wont notice the noise, but if you do, just get a mic for x somewhere :D

Cons: Dunno. This is a great price for such a nice camcorder, so I cannot think of any real cons.

Other Thoughts: I am not an expert, but the video does look quite nice :)

Rating + 5 Great Camera, Great Price, Great Service

Pros: Outstading product. Canon hit a home run with this camcorder. I spent about 6 months researching camera's before it became clear that this was the top choice for my price range. I have not experienced the operating sounds that this camera has been widely criticized for. The video picture quality is simply outstanding. I found the software that comes with the camera extremely useful with changing compression/quality settings. Nice assortment of manual settings; however, the auto point and shoot setting is a novice users dream. I could find verly little compromises for the low price. If you want true widescreen, great picture and sound capture at a great price this is the camera for you.

Cons: It took me 6 months to make the purchase

Other Thoughts: I almost made the mistake of purchasing at a slightly lower price from a competing internet store I found at a discount camera search engine on the web; however, After reviewing some of the BBB reports which were on some of these vendors I found the marginal cost difference negligible considering the peace of mind that comes with purchasing at a reputable company such as NewEgg.

Rating + 5 Excellent amateur MiniDV camera

Pros: Extrememly compact. The pictures do not lie - it literally fits in the palm of your hand. Solid battery life with or without the LCD viewfinder (it's the same duration). Canon performance, even at this budget level. Included LED flash which does the trick for pitch black situations. EXTERNAL MICROPHONE JACK!

Cons: Wish it had a bit more manual controls.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking to hop into digital video and don't know where to start, here's an excellent beginning point.

Rating + 4 Sweet little camcorder

Pros: The color is pretty good, the resolution quite good, the zoom lens is excellent and I really like the ability to record "true" 16:9 videos instead of letterboxed 4:3 videos. It's very compact and even my technophobic wife has had no problems using it.

Cons: It includes a USB cable, which is only good for transferring still pictures, but doesn't include even a small memory card for taking those pictures. It really should have included a FireWire cable, needed for transferring videos.

Other Thoughts: I'd read a few reviews claiming that this camera (like many other small DV camcoders) picks up excessive motor noise with its internal microphones. I haven't found this to be the case at all.

Rating + 5 Great Value

Pros: Great price from NewEgg, excellent video quality for this price range, good low-light performance for this price range too (although suffers compared to more expensive cameras as expected), external mic jack, LED lights (for when blue tinted close-ups in the dark are better than nothing at all), small and light, nice manual controll and EASY mode lets switch to full auto (good for my wife)

Cons: Bad button placement, flimsy strap, drab design

Other Thoughts: People complained months ago about loud motor noises on the Elura 100, but mine is no louder than any other MiniDV cam (there WILL be some motor noised picked up by the internal mic in quiet situations, no matter what small MiniDV camera you buy). Some people definitely had problems in the past, but it appears that Canon has fixed the production problems and/or NewEgg is getting the good ones.

Rating + 5 Very little and nice camera

Pros: Price from Newegg, small camcorder, battery life is excellent even with LCD open for long time....wow..!!
Would highly recommend.

Cons: IEEE 1394 (Firewire cable) cable not included with camera, this forces you to buy separate.

Rating + 5 Only camera to buy under $800.

Pros: Small size, but full featured. Great widescreen capability, excellent video for it's chip size and surprisingly stable electronic image stabilization.

Cons: Bad in low light. Motor noise. A little ergonomically challenged. All normal for this price range. If you are buying a Mini DV cam in this price range for feel and to use silently in low light, then you need to spend more.

Other Thoughts: I own five of these Elura 100's and I think that this little guy is a real champ! If you are looking for a miniDV cam to use on a motorcycle, then look no further. I tried numerous models and found that in the extreme environment of a moto in motion nothing can touch the Elura 100. The EIS is better than the OIS on cameras in the near $1000 range. In an era where manufacturer's are cutting features left and right, this one still has it all and at the killer newegg price it's a no brainer. If it's great in the extreme environment of a bike moving 50 MPH, then imagine what it can do for you at 0 MPH. Get it!

Rating + 4 Elura 100

Pros: I researched a lot of digital camcorders over the past three months. This camera came out ahead of all the others in this price range. The camera is perfect for filming family events and those special occassions you want to capture for future viewing. The true 16x9 imaging feature is a definite advantage over other offerings on the market today.

Cons: Average low light quality. No video editing software included.

Rating + 4 A bit more than most entry level cameras

Pros: Great Camera for the bucks.
Color and overall features are very good.

Cons: Some of the controls and buttons could have been arranged a bit more conveniently, but this may also be due do my getting used to another brand, that Canon blows away in the price range.

Rating + 4 Great Camcorder Overall

Pros: Compact... Lightweight... Optical telephoto... Battery life (with the CCD open)...

Screen is nicely sized, not too small, and big enough.

Overall user friendly...

*The Canon Elura 100 in my opinion to motor noise within each recording you do (in particular to quiet settings) is very low in sound you hear in comparison to other DV camcorders - more detail on this below*

Cons: No accessory shoe (mic or light), you can hear the tape motor in everything you record..BUT as I have listened to many DV camcorders, they ALL have this, some are just louder than others.... This camcorder is very livable in the motor noise department.

Other Thoughts: I would suggest this to my family if they were in the market for a very nicely priced camcorder that has nice overall picture quality, and a decent amount of features

Rating + 5 This surprised me

Pros: Price, 1/5 ccd, daylight video quality, surprisingly better low light quality than expected for it's price, 20x optical zoom, compact.

Cons: view finder dz nt pivot or extend, does still pictures but better use regular camera for quality.

Other Thoughts: 1st camcorder and wanted an entrylevel for auto shoot and just enough manual controls. Read multiple reviews on this model and am glad I got it. Have not experienced objectionable motor noise but if so, it would have been returned as defective. This model scores a 9 at camcorderinfo.com with the HC-1 at number 1.

Rating + 2 Motor Noise!

Pros: Great size, easy menus, quick setup, low light performance.

Cons: MOTOR NOISE! The motor for the tape provides a high pitch wine over any audio recorded through the built in mic. The video quality is ok, but has high grain. You can only take 640x480 still pictures on the SD card while you are filming. Higher still resolution is available only when you're not filming to DV.

Other Thoughts: I just recieved my camera today. Newegg and UPS managed to get it here a day early, as always fantastic service. The cameras image is average at best, the motor noise however is very disturbing. I'm going to see if I can remove it or improve the sound quality in post production. I think this one may be headed back to Newegg.
