Good for the price
Pros: Small size, Easy to use, low price
Cons: Still picture resolution is very low
Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace an older Canon model that stopped recording about 1 month out of warranty. It uses the same batteries and supplies. Firewire interface not a problem since my old camcorder used it too. Just bought a second one since we left the other somewhere and lost it.

Excellent Camera
Pros: Excellent picture quality. I am able to record wildlife 300 yards away with very clear pictures. This is my first camcorder but have used camcorders owned by my family. This has much better quality of picture. I also record my grandkids playing hockey in terrible lighting on the rink and they come out very well. I really am pleased with this camera. Easy to use beginner camera.
Cons: This camera needs a tripod for long distance shooting to keep the picture still.

problems with firewire transfer
Pros: The camera is lightweight, and has a good picture quality. I've used it for about four months now, and as far as recording goes I am happy with it. I like how it can locate clips on the MiniDV tape. In my view, a joystick for on-screen controls is better than a touch screen.
Cons: To start with, the camera suddenly stopped being detected on my Mac/PC. I tested everything, the firewire port, cables, software, but the problem appears to be with the camera. A quick search on the web shows that similar problems have occurred with no clear solution. The quality on the media storage device (SD card) for both photo and movie is below average. The menu navigation isn't user friendly at all. You have to go through several items before you can switch on the LED light in front of the camera.
Other Thoughts: Given that one of my main goals is to get the movie on a computer, this camera has completely failed me. I have tested my mac and firewire cable with other devices and they work. This leaves the zr850 as the only culprit!

Good Camera for First Timers
Pros: Bought this camera because of reviews here and elsewhere were mostly positive. Good first time camera, great price. I needed something to video my first child, and her trips to grandparents and the holidays. Easy to use, compact, great price. Good video quality with the right amount of light. I have been quite happy with the camera.
Cons: The motor is a little noisy, so in low sound areas, you can hear the motor whine. Low light performance a little weak. Built in LED light is pretty much useless.
Other Thoughts: Good camera for people who just want to capture life on camera, and who aren't looking to spend a lot.

awsome
Pros: Excellent video quality. Decent low-light. I mostly use it to record shows/parties for my band, and it's perfect.
Cons: the LED light is pretty much useless.
Other Thoughts: the best MiniDV cam I've ever used.

First Camcorder
Pros: Easy to get setup. No real problems with it. Have made a clip and shown it on my TV.
Cons: Canon as usual has instructions that leave a lot to be desired. They seem to think you know how to run one and leave out the obvious info.
Other Thoughts: As bad as Canon is, newegg is good. Great delivery. I even got the free camera bag three day later they forgot to send. The online chat thing works. Had a new order number for the bag, in nothing flat!

small, cheap, + works
Pros: small, good video performance
Cons: bad quality stills and video to SD, but for this sort of thing you're better off w/ a digicam.

1st Camera - Very happy
Pros: Easy to use, point and go. This is my first camcorder and overall its everything I've expected. Battery life is good.
Cons: Another user pointed out some good points, the light toggle is hidden in the menu's, should have a button. And it's easy to leave it on and/or leave the lens cap open.
Other Thoughts: Minor quirks don't really outweigh the pros (and price) of this minidv camcorder. This is a good starter camera

Not all that
Pros: Takes video and has an SD card slot for picture taking.
Cons: 1. LED light is comparible to using a lighter for illumination. 2. You have to go through the menu to turn on the light. 3. The record button is disguised as the color "white" instead of the worldwide color of "Red". 4. The lens cover is not the typical cap that dangles to remind you to put it back. I forget to push the switch to close it.
Other Thoughts: You can't return this so be certain that you wanna buy it before you do it. I wish I could have gotten the Panasonic PV-GS85. Looks much better for comparible price.

Canon zr850
Pros: great price, ease of use, good brand name
Cons: none at this point
Other Thoughts: i bought this as my first camcorder, i wanted the ability to manipulate and edit footage on my macbook, and from what i read mini dv format seems to be the best for that. so far from my spare usage it seems to work very well.

Pretty Good Indeed
Pros: Very excellent video quality in all lighting. Video and Picture options on either the MiniDV or the SD Card. "Easy" button for best picture in any light.
Cons: Video upload is only though Firewire not USB. Hissing in the background from humming of video, not able to remove even on 12-channel audio.
Other Thoughts: Just little minor issues that doesn't change the overall awesomeness of this camera.

Pros: Nice size. Very good outdoor and good to average lighting recording. Good option if you want to stick to tapes.
Cons: Low light recording is not great but not horrible.
Other Thoughts: If you plan on transferring video to dvd with pc, you migh just wwant to look into HDD or DVD cameras. They record MPEG-2 which is pretty much what you end up transferring the video to anyways.

Great little compact Camera
Pros: Light, small, great video quality. The 35x optical zoom is wonderful. I have digital turned off and I doubt I'll need it. I bought this for my son's kindergarten graduation. They had all ppl with video cameras setup on a balcony overlooking the stage. Came out wonderful! I chose DV format over DVD, so that I can get an uncompressed format on the computer. It was quality over ease. I chose this model becuase 1. Canon makes wonderful imaging products 2. This is only miniDV cam with a 1+meg sensor, without going to a more expensive 3CCD model.
There are so many settings on this camera. I've shot a couple of events already, but I'm still reading over the manual!
Cons: I've read that the Pan*s*nic's have more manual controls, but the Canon has better image quality. Not really a con, just pointy out that tho the Canon's have a lot of control, there are other's with more.

Ok until the DV port broke
Pros: Outdoor 1280x720 widescreen video is absolutely stunning when shot using a tripod and an external mic.
Cons: Produced poor quality video with normal indoor light and the onboard "light" is a useless LED that gave my video a blueish hue. The digital stabilizer only reduced video resolution and didn't make the camera usable as a palmcorder (video was too jumpy). The onboard mic recorded a very annoying tape drive hum. The DV port is extremely fragile.
Other Thoughts: To make this camcorder usable plan on adding 3 things. An external stereo mic, a good tripod, and lots of light. I returned mine after 6 uses when the DV port broke. I'll replace it some day when a wireless solidstate optically stabilized version is available at a reasonable price. Until then I'll go back to using my old VHS-C.

Good Camera
Pros: Good camera for beginers like me. Easy to use. Price is good for the features.
Cons: Low light/indoor could be better. Easy mode is very grainy indoors unless you have plenty of lights on. Night mode is a little better but still grainy.
Other Thoughts: You NEED a firewire port on your PC to transfer from the tape. You can't use USB to transfer video from tape to PC. USB is only for the SD memory card slot. That wasn't very clear to me when I bought it. Fortunatly Newegg has a large selection of affordable 1394 cards.
