great little video camera
Pros: Small, compact, great color
Cons: battery life
Other Thoughts: Believe what everyone else has said about the battery. It dies pretty quick. I'll have a backup battery before going on vacation this summer. Study the manual. there's a ton of stuff to learn to get all the benefits this camera offers. Didn't even try to download on an old pc based tower. Not enough horsepower there. Worked great with a new MacBook Pro. No problems whatsoever. Ordered from Newegg on Tuesday and it was at my house on Wednesday. Great service!

Excellent product
Pros: This camera shoots at awesome quality video. Slim design and light weight makes it perfect for traveling to just grabbing it for any trips. Was really amazed that during low light a little or no graining was present (this is a weak point of MANY camcorders these days). Provided software helps easily create DVD's of the video.
Cons: 1) Video files are somewhat complex to edit on PC at this point (Premier suite doesn't support these files as of today) 2) Quality of still pictures is somewhat poor, a lot of noise and just about even worse than a cell phone ones. 3) The battery life (well also bought an additional one, so not really a con)
Other Thoughts: If i had a choice to buy it again or to recommend it to a friend, i would so. This is a great camera for the $$$. The cons are easily to overcome with an additional purchase of a battery and digital camera. My only regret is that i bought it months ago and not today (well for obvious price drop). Other than that it's an excellent piece of equipment every family should have to capture those golden moments that won't repeat in the future.

Nice Camcorder
Pros: Nice size. Clear pictures (even on lower quality settings). Easy operation. Scene settings seem to work well, at least from a white balance point of view (Snow setting makes snow white instead of blue). Expandable storage. External storage can be used as a back up of the internal storage via the in-camera functions.
Cons: Low light conditions produce significant noise. Large external storage causes longer camera boot-up times. Can only charge the battery in the camera (unless you buy external charger). Have to plug the camera in to use USB.
Other Thoughts: Nice camera, good image quality, small size, and expandable storage.

Love it, with one caveat
Pros: Great video quality. Camera is very compact thanks to tapeless design. I didn't think the interface was too complicated. The 16GB of built-in memory will get you about 130 minutes of video at the highest quality setting, so I may never need to add an SD card. Based on several comments, I also opted for the high-capacity battery (1780mAh) which the camera estimates will last about 160 minutes. File transfers seem quick enough, and I like not having to transfer video in realtime.
Cons: Editing AVCHD files takes a lot of computer horsepower. A LOT. I have a dual-core with 4GB of RAM on 64-bit XP and just the playback framerate in Premiere Elements 7 is about 2 fps. Users with more powerful computers using Premiere CS4 have the same problems. The consensus seems to be that you will need to convert the AVCHD files to another format for editing. I use Elecard AVCHD Converter Studio. Not sure if Sony Vegas would perform better on my system, but Elecard is much cheaper.
Also, the camera must be plugged into external power in order to transfer files to a PC. This is a mild inconvenience.
Other Thoughts: There are many complaints about how the high-capacity battery sticks out from the back of the camera. While it does stick out about 1/2-3/4", I actually find that to be a comfortable place to rest my thumb when holding the camera. I also think putting my thumb there provides a little extra stability.

Canon HF10
Pros: I couldn't believe how small this camcorder was when I received it. Fairly easy to use, buttons and dials well placed, LCD menu somewhat convoluted.
Cons: More difficult than I expected to find decent editing software, which is also fairly expensive. When considering a program, absolutely take advantage of a trial period. Will probably go with Premiere Elements of Cyberlink PowerDirector?

Nice optics and HD, Battery design STINKS
Pros: Excellent camera, video is great in HD. Menus are a little confusing to navigate. Ergonomics of the camera are overall good, although the mode dial is uncomfortable to reach with a thumb. Small, fits in hand nicely for normal sized hands like me. Black shows fingerprint oils very easily but looks professional and overall better than silver in my opinion. Now for the battery...
As many others have mentioned the battery life is weak, maybe 45 minutes per charge if you're lucky. I would go so far as to say, like in my title as to say it stinks or that it is just pathetic. Higher capacity battery is not necessary, it's mandatory and not cheap! It also sticks out of the back of the camera, which can change how you hold it. Now on to the part that irks me most about the overall battery design. There is no external charger! The camera is the charger, which is very inconvenient in my opinion, and it is sold as an accessory which ranges from $70 to $90, ouch! Good luck traveling with it.
Cons: This is really not a $600 camera when all is said and done, it's at least $100 more. All the battery deficiencies they leave out of the package are something you really have to purchase for even the most recreational of uses of this camera. External charger $80, extra high capacity battery $90, HDMI cable not included $30..
Otherwise it does HD well, feels nice in the hand, and has great optics. Just make sure and understand the battery seems like and afterthought in the overall design, and I consider this a critical component of the design.

Pros: Small, light, easy to use, quality of a picture is amazing for such a little thingy. Was a bit confused at first about quality of picture on TV, but then realized that wife didn't use component video cable and used regular RSA. With component quality is amazingly much better. Haven't tried HDMI yet, might be even crispier.
Cons: No button to turn on or off video helper light on the body, have to do it through the menu. Included video software doesn't work on Mac, Windows only. Mac iMovie though works perfectly with the cam.
Other Thoughts: NewEgg shipment doesn't seize to amaze me. It said it'll be delivered in 3 days, got it in 1 and a half!

Stunning!
Pros: AWESOME PICTURE! Small, light weight. 1080i is something to behold! With the right combination of settings low light as well as night time shots are doable. Even a moon and stars shot was great. I would recommend this camcorder to anyone. Even with the cons. Purchased here for $795 with extra 32GB SDHC.
Cons: Small buttons. Doesn't fit well in my hand. Made for my kids hands. The CONS that everyone else has said is true. Battery life is not great. File transfers via USB takes a while with the huge files. Still pictures are not great. But I didn't buy it for that.
Other Thoughts: At 17Mb/s your file sizes become huge! Using Vegas to edit and export. Takes a while to export. Need to upgrade to quad core. Need to purchase another battery as well as wide angle lens. Newegg is da best!

Big Bang
Pros: This thing is tiny! but don't let the size fool you. I used Sony Vegas to do the editing of the videos I shoot from this thing. All I have to say is wow! The video is hard to distinguish from aired HD. The video quality looks amazing on our 65" DLP TV. I have not viewed it on a plasma yet. But I am overall satisfied with this camera. It is so much more than what I had expected.
Cons: none

Pros: Very nice camara - upgrade from and old tape based camcorder - lol! Wow - really nice picture!
- The camara does exactly what I want it to do - can get about 90 min from the battery, plenty of room on the internal memory for what I need - I can upgrade when I need to be more mobile (battery and add card when I need to).
Cons: Pictures are a little off (very bright and kind of washed out)- still pretty good though - I'm sure it's an operator error though - I need to play with the settings (i'm not a photographer in the least)
- low light video is okay (picture is a little grainy - but still good) - stock light makes for a more blue image but you can always add a light if you want... or turn on a light :)
Other Thoughts: - I'm using this for misc home videos, and was really concerned that my Mac mini osX wouldn't be able to deal with the data but was able to download the various 2-6 minute clips in a resonable amount of time. Am able to edit using recent version of iMovie and post those clips on iWeb - no issues. Currently can't get the full HD format in iDVD not a big deal though. I was really concerned about the format not working with these programs - nothing to be concerned about.

Don't Buy
Pros: Small, light wieght, and compact. Takes a nice video when you can use it.
Cons: Worst tech/customer service I hace seen in a very long time. Battery was DOA. Canon said they would ship it right out. Five weeks latter I call and am told the battery is on back order. I asked them to ship me the next best battery. They told me no way. They could not spend the twenty dollars to do that. So I have a camera that only works when on AC
Other Thoughts: You pay this much for a nice camera and for the lack of a few dollars they will not correct THIER mistake. I hate to see what would happen if I needed real tech support.
And yes I purchased a new battery from NewEgg. Sad but true!

Nice camcorder
Pros: Great HD Video and fun to operate. small enough to sit on my hip in a hip pouch. love the zoom.
Cons: software package is not good, wish the camcorder had a eye viewfinder. a little akward in my small hand. I bought the larger battery. Also got 16 gig memory card and a 8 gig. 16 gig on board is not big enough for recording long lengh of time in hd quality. Also you should get the canon FS-H37U filter set. it will protect the lens opening and has a filter for bright conditions The stills are not the best I have seen in a 3 meg camera. My Nikon camera taks better stills.
Other Thoughts: Although I had to buy extra stuff for it (yet to get a AC charger) I love the cam and enjoy the quality.

Good, Could use Improvement
Pros: 1080p for cheap. Works well with Linux, but actually watching the movies requires you to "illegally" download/install codecs from mplayer website, and compile mplayer from source. Even then, playback is at the wrong rate (it seems utterly convinced a progressive-scan stream is actually interlaced).
Cons: Keep in mind most of these are somewhat minor, but they are cons that I think could be fixed if Canon so desired.
1. Widest angle is still a bit tight. 2. Lower bitrate modes actually reduce resolution of image. This was not clear from the UI and is counter-intuitive. 3. AVCHD format pretty much unsupported in Linux. I hear it's not very well-supported in Mac/Windows land either. 4. Clunky UI - slow response time with menus, and poorly-laid-out menu options. I'm a computer/UI guy, and even I had a hard time figuring out some of the options on this sucker. 5. If you run out of internal RAM, it doesn't just start recording to the flash card. It just... stops recording. Even if the flash card is EMPTY. 6. No way to manually focus. Sometimes you end up with your desired subject out-of-focus for long periods of time. 7. Battery life VERY SHORT.
Other Thoughts: Overall it's doing what I wanted it for, except for focus. Because it's widescreen, sometimes you frame the subject off-center, and the camera focuses on something else. It's really hard to control for focus AND good video composition.
Despite all the "cons" I've listed, I think this is a "GOOD" overall rating.

Wooooooooooow
Pros: After quite a bit of research I chose the HF10 - Did buy it here at Newegg. Replaced a 6 year old Sony TR350 Hi8 which decided to have a mechanical problem aka DOS. The HF10 has few moving parts and records without gears, motors and etc. I have recorded several of my grandsons football games and then took the AVCHD DVD I make with Corels Video Studio 11 to the local Sams and play the video in a Blue Ray Player on a 1080p TV - (I don't have either as yet) Folks gather around and can't believe the sharpness and color. If I had a case of these I could sell them in a few minutes. Purchased a couple of additional batts and am looking forward to an upcoming cruise. Stop looking, this is the camera - HD at a good price AND with Video Studio you can make HD DVDs which will play on players with the AVHCD sticker on them. Regular DVD is really good too!
Cons: I wish it had a view finder instead of having to look at the LCD to record. A little hard to follow action this way, but I am getting used to it. It is light as a feather so I got a monopod and now my videos are rock solid.
Other Thoughts: If I lost this camera or it "grew legs" I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another the next day!

compact & powerful
Pros: it does what it's supposed to do. zoom is nice. it's a small camcorder that i can put into the pockets of my shorts (bumps around a bit so don't go jogging w/it). i also like the feature where you can take a snapshot of what you've recorded... you can get some great action shots that way. i've taken video of wakeboarding and you can freeze it to make a great pic.
Cons: not much. one thing that i can think of is that you have to follow about 4 or 5 steps in order to delete a video from the camera. not a huge problem, just a bother.
Other Thoughts: it was a good purchase.

Fairly nice camcorder.
Pros: High definition recording. 1440x1080 or 1920x1080 at various framerates. Reasonably good sound from the built-in mics. Really good Linux support as far as data transfer goes.
Cons: Really tough to focus on what you want to focus on. Seems to pick something at random in the scene to focus on. Won't automatically record to memory card if on-board memory runs out.
The remote needs to be within about 5 feet of the camcorder to work.
Really bad Linux support for whatever their AVCHD format is. Apparently VLC works with the Sony/Panasonic versions of these files, but they segfault or display completely whacked out video on the Canon version.
Other Thoughts: Wish I could decide what to focus on. I lose a fair bit of detail on my intended subject for signifant amounts of time.
The resolution is high enough I'm experimenting using it as a replacement for a camera. I just video the scene with my subjects, then later on do screencaps to get stills.

Big wonder, little package
Pros: Very small yet quite versitale, low power consumption, very impressive image quanlity both for video and still shots, fairly intuitive operation, very durable contruction, high quality workmanship (actually made in Japan), and the street price is quite reasonable for what this camcorder can do. I was looking for a highly portable HiDef camcorder for use while hiking/backpacking and with a couple of hikes under my belt with this camcorder, I can honestly say it's just what I was looking for.
Cons: Recessed power button makes it hard to know for sure if you've powered it down after use and sometimes it takes several pushes to turn on, not the best thing to be distracted by when trying to focus on the project at hand. As others have noted, the 'photo' button takes a fair amount of pressure to 'engage' making still shots nearly impossible to take while shooting video without image stabilization issues. While I'm impressed with the depth inwhich this camcorder can be tweeked, it only offers manual control over aperture and shutter speed that's mutually exclusive, or in other words, when manually adjusting the aperture, the camera automatically sets the shutter speed and visa versa; not a critical flaw, in fact I was impressed to have that much control, but the only reason I can guess at for not allowing manual control of both simulataniously would be to protect the photocouplers on the CMOS chip.
Other Thoughts: The years of success Canon has had with manufaturing their own CMOS chips is at heart of what makes this camcorder an exceptional value, it's image quality is beyond anything I've seen from any portable video camera ever, which includes some very high-end broadcast quanlity three CCD DVCPRO cameras. I can't say enough about the benefits of flash memory for recording video; simply is the shape of things to come. The only problem anybody will most likely run into is editing the video from this camcorder on their computer. In addition to a decent dual core and 2 gigs of memory minimum, I would also highly recommend Sony's Vegas 8 pro, a NLE solfware program; it handles the AVCHD format without issues, and when coupled with Sony's DVD Achitect and a Blu-Ray Burner, there is nothing you can't do with this camcorder. I would have bought it from Newegg (actually would have preferred to), but I needed it for a wedding and couldn't wait or justify the overnight shipping expense.

Vixia is amazing
Pros: Light Weight, portable, great picture taking affects, Quick Shot keeps the recording extremely still, Software is easy to use & the recording quality is AMAZING!
Cons: No shoulder strap.
Other Thoughts: I purchased the HF10 and a 32gb SDHC card (Speed class 4) The two worked great together. The quality of every video is amazing. I can not believe how amazing the quality and clarity is. the only difficulty I had was with the software and hard disk space on my laptop (20 gb) filled up fast. Purchasing a external drive (700gb) did the trick! The camera is light weight for taking on your travels, very portable a little bigger than a soda can, the pictures come out pretty nice too. I will be creating my first DVD after my vacation, but so far this camera does everything I want it to.

Looks like a movie!
Pros: My niece just exclaimed "It looks just like a movie... it's so clear!" Need I say more? Well, ok I will say that it's so much more convenient than the DV tapes. Very light and small. Simple to use. Editing and rendering is a snap faster.
Cons: None here.
Other Thoughts: AVCHD Editors are few and Adobe Premiere does not support it yet. De-interlacing 1080i work flow is almost mythical.

Great Little Camera
Pros: I love this camera! I'm shooting HD and capturing with the HDMI output and into 4:4:2 uncompressed footage. The quality is supurb and rock solid.
Cons: The camera had a dead pixel in the flip out view finder and the external mic plug had a short, so I returned it to Newegg for replacement.
Other Thoughts: It's been almost 3 weeks and I still have not gotten my camera back. Granted, I forgot to include the remote, but they are VERY slow to communicate. I have had to call numerous times to expedite things. I overnighted the remote and 3 days later they still have no record of receiving it. I should have sent it to Canon.

Extremely pleased with this camera
Pros: Great picture quality. Easy to use. Automatic focus and exposure were perfect 99.9% of the time. Good still picture capability. Outstanding low light performance. Screen bright enough to see outside in bright daylight. Good optical image stabilization. Light weight and small size.
Cons: Start-up time for still pictures was long - about 7 to 10 seconds before it was ready to take a picture after power-on. Start-up time for movies was much quicker, but until the camera was fully booted (about 10-15 sec), there was a delay in stopping the recording after pressing the STOP button. Because of power consumption while in Standby mode, you really do need a second battery to shoot all day in typical vacation style. I bought a second standard-sized Canon battery (BP-809) and never ran out of power. Canon's extra capacity battery (BP-819) might be even a better choice if you're a heavy shooter. The BP-819 is physically larger though, and will stick out about 3/4 inch beyond the camera body. I also wish I had purchased the optional CG-800 battery charger so I could be charging one battery while using the camcorder with the other battery. The supplied charger only charges the battery while in the camcorder. Can't trim the video clips in the camcorder, must use your computer.
Other Thoughts: After extensively researching HD camcorders, I decided on the Canon HF10 for our once-in-a-lifetime trip through the Panama Canal. I'm extremely pleased with the results and am glad I picked this camcorder. While I bought it to take movies, I found that its still picture capabilities are good enough to do away with a separate point-and-shoot still camera. I added a 16GB Class 6 SDHC card and had more than enough capacity (4 hrs) for our entire 3 week trip using the highest quality mode. (I had a 2nd 16GB card which I didn't use). I found I could record movies and still pictures at light levels that I could barely see in. Although slightly grainy, this low light capability was extremely impressive compared with my prior camcorder (or still cameras for that matter). My biggest problem is now my slow computer, which can't edit the large HD files. Time for a NewEgg purchase!

Canon VIXIA HF10
Pros: This camcorder is great. The video quality is outstanding. The stills are very very good. The optical image stabilization works wonders on both the video and still mode.
Cons: This is not really a negative since you will need a second battery for any camcorder you buy. The Canon BP-819 extended battery lasts forever and is a great buy.
Other Thoughts: I bought my Canon VIXIA HF10 from photo Dynasty and the extra battery from Newegg. DO NOT fall for Photo Dynasty come ons. I ended up paying more, much more from if photo Dynasty than what was shown on their web site. I always buy from Newegg, but no, not this time. What a mistake. Buy from Newegg they are not crooks like Photo Dynasty.

Outstanding
Pros: Amazing 1920x1080 quality. Has the option of recording at full res or smaller res. Size is great. Very lightweight. I bought this to replace my 7 year old miniDV camera in order to get some great quality video of the birth of my new son. Money very well spent. I couldn't be happier.
Cons: Only small quirks that have already been mentioned. This camera does everything I want.

Great Camcorder
Pros: Small, Light, Easy to use, and No tape hum or hard drive noise! Starts and stops quickly. 16gb SD card holds 2hrs of HD Video. Small enough to fit in some digital still cases.
Cons: None yet. Needs a wide-angle lens for close shooting

Technically superior but quirky
Pros: The quality of the video is outstanding. The fact that it records to flash memory sets it light years ahead of other media based cameras. It is very small, lightweight and does everything I need it to do.
Easily the smallest camcorder I have ever owned. It fits comfortably in your hand and can be stored in your jacket pocket.
Extra SD memory slot to store more video is fantastic.
Cons: There are some questionable decisions that went into the design of this camera. You can record up to 6 hours of video to internal memory however the battery only lasts about 80 minutes. This makes the purchase of an additional battery (or two) almost mandatory for any all day outing.
A dial is used to select between picture and video mode but there is a different button to record video and take pictures. (???)
The button to take pictures must be pressed firmly, so much so that it makes it hard to keep the camera steady. A few pictures came out fuzzy because of this.
The user interface is not intuitive as it should be. It will give you all the features and options but not in an easy to use fashion.
Other Thoughts: Lots of Cons listed, why a 5 star rating? It does what I want it to do and it does it well. The ‘cons’ are quirky but most of them can be worked around or are just odd. As long as you are aware of these ahead of time and can accept them it is a great camcorder.

Nice
Pros: Very compact! Feels like you are holding a water bottle except it is shorter :) Lots of neat features! Out the box - 2 hours on HD mode and 5 hours on standard mode. The battery lasts 90 minutes on a full charge so a spare battery would be nice for long days. Sleek design with a nice handle.
USB 2.0 is decent for transfers HDMI cable is great straight to the HDTV It's made by Canon so you know its good =D
Cons: No Firewire (Not a huge con)
