Rating + 5 Simply Awsome

Pros: Slick user interface. Easy to use. Most all software works with it. Just make sure your hardware drivers are vista ready.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I recoment the 64 bit version. Then you can install 4Gb of Mem with no problem. Most new software will run on it and alot of leagacy stuff will to. It will emulate 32 bit well.

Rating + 5 NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES

Pros: The OS was very easy to install. I have no issues so far.

Cons: The OS takes up a lot of drive space. Takes awhile to get used to the new GUI.

Other Thoughts: I am not sure what all these 1 egg ratings are fussing about. I built my computer from scractch. 3 1/2 hours later I was ready to use my computer. I wonder . . .

Computer: Intel 2.4 GHz Core 2 Quad (Q6600 Kentsfield), EVGA NVidia Geforce 8800GT, 4x1GB Kingston memory sticks (DDR2 1066), WD 640GB Sata HDD, GigaByte (GA-P35-S3B) motherboard, BFG Tech 650W PSU.

Rating + 5 Be open minded, its much better than XP

Pros: I've heard many of the criticisms of Vista out there, but have always been baffled by them. Almost every complaint someone has can usually be fixed in about a minute. I disabled UAC the first day, right through windows options. Not sure about older hardware/software, but I've had almost no problems at all with drivers and such. Any problem I did have could usually be fixed by a workaround. Keep in mind that this is for 64 bit, too, so its probably the least supported version, yet works great. Extremely easy to install. Takes 1 minute to change power options, Pete...

Another key complaint is memory hogging. The idea it's using is that unused memory is being wasted, so it reserves your idle memory for applications you run often, making them fast when you start them. When something like a game requires more RAM, Windows lets go and free's enough up. Works well.

Cons: I've had the occasional bluescreen. Not sure if its Vista, or hardware related. Be aware that 32 bit programs will take up more RAM on a 64 bit OS.

Other Thoughts: I have 2gb of RAM, and a E6750 cpu. For vista, more ram definitely means more performance. 2gb seems like a good amount. You'll be able to get away with 1gb, but with prices these day, it's well worth it to spend a measly $30 more for a huge performance boost. I plan on getting 8gb eventually, should be great.

Rating + 5 Great Operating System

Pros: This 64 Bit operating system flies with my AMD Phenom 9750, 8GB's of RAM, and current hardware.... Is truly XP upgraded for the modern user. To boot, Vista found drivers for my hp printer, without me even having to search. It was an old school Hewlett-Packard 1350xi all-in-one. It also found drivers for a maxtor one touch, that XP wouldn't recognize after a rebuild. Vista flies... anyone having problems with this OS either does not have a modern PC, or they don't know what they are doing. I was waiting, trying to avoid Vista based on warnings... learned that was idiotic.. with SP1, this is the best OS so far by Microsoft, it is a huge upgrade over XP, and runs great. In vista premium the media center is just awesome. Playback of video is perfect

Cons: Only that flipping between windows and media center is sort of annoying with dual displays... but a minor issue considering Vista media center is the best pvr recording and playback software available, in my opinion right now. Beyond TV is good, but their playback cannot compete...

Other Thoughts: I am sold, I was so not wanting to upgrade to Vista... but in building my new pc, knew XP couldn't recognize more than 3.5 Gbs of RAM... so bit the bullet. WOW... do I not regret it... again, Vista is for current technology. If you want less than 2 gigs of RAM, and other substandard parts (staying in the past)... Vista will stink. XP is your way to go, or you will end up writing fraudulant bashings of Vista unintentually. Vista is current technology. If you are using an outdated pc, like some reviewers here obviously are, stay with xp. Vista requires current technology, and if you have it, WOW... it is a HUGE and great upgrade over XP, and runs great....

Rating + 1 Very resource intensive!

Pros: Very nice looking and runs well on 64 bit AMD

Cons: What used to be the power button is now the standby button. To shut down, you have to go through another pop up menu. The OS uses a ton of memory. Very pricey and vista ultimate still costs about $100 more for very few worthy extra features. Had some trouble installing. This was a real pain! Had to clean my hard drive with my xp pro cd's command console. The vista disk partition program didn't work and I would get some error saying it couldn't find suitable system resources or something like that.

Other Thoughts: Ubuntu 64 is just about as good, only it doesn't has as good driver support for video (stupid proprietary problems :( ). Although, Ubuntu was able to detect my network card and run smoothly, while vista wasn't able to and I had to bring out my motherboard driver cd.

Rating + 5 Good operating system

Pros: It's really fast and good looking; supports DirectX 10.1 and 4+ GB of RAM. Driver support is great and it's compatible with almost everything you'll ever need.

Cons: A bit of a memory hog - uses over 900 MB while idle; some older Win95/98 games have stability issues.

Other Thoughts: New drivers and updates have made a somewhat questionable operating system into something quite decent.

Pros: Very happy with 64-bit Vista so far, seems much less piggy then 32-bit vista was. No issues to speak of so far driver wise.

Cons: Its kinda bloated, the windows folder is a good 20gigs once its all setup and patched.

Other Thoughts: First time i have been happy with my OS since i left Xp Pro.

32-bit Vista is a waste of money and will give you a bad impression of Vista as a OS.

If your computer cant run 64-bit Vista i would advise staying with Xp Pro till it can.

Pros: Knowing the potential issues lurking with the release of a new OS I avoided putting Vista on other machines I purchased (for work) since its release. However, I took the plunge with this gaming system build and have been happy so far. No issues to date with gaming (AOC, WOW and many first person shooters.)

Cons: Time will tell for me...

Other Thoughts: I feel it is only fair to rate this product in relative terms to the complete system (one component of a car for example) I assembled, strictly for gaming:

Rating + 1 The OS is a VIRUS

Pros: ABSOLUTELY NONE!!!! Maybe if it worked. Was convinced by a friend to buy this, waste of money and time!

Cons: Nothing but a pain in the rear so far has ruined 2 hard drives that i'll need to reformat Upgraded everything but my harddrive which had XP on it originally Wouldn't run from xp tried booting from disk BSOD 10-15 times then setup shows up get things started and it installs fine till the restart then nothing but continuous restarts and error messages Bought a new hard drive thinking a clean install might work better, same problems.

Other Thoughts: Can't fix them without formating the hard drive cuz windows wont load even in safe mode can't boot from disks can't reinstall windows or reformate using xp without causing more errors. And of course no support from the crooks at microsoft.
Q6600 quad, nvidia 780i MOBO, BFG 8800GTS, 4GB corsair ddr2 800, 320GB WD caviar SE16, (everything to easily run vista and all vista compatible) Vista 64 is just a Virus! 32 seems ok from other friends they had similar issues with 64 but none with 32 bit.

Pros: Fast... Good Looking......Finally stable OS. Personally i prefer Vista over XP for everything including gaming since it will support direct x 10.1 with the right hardware.

Cons: old windows 95/98 games dont always run smooth but i wouldnt let this stop me from buying vista.

Other Thoughts: loaded in about 10 min. this was my second build and it was for my little brother. AMD 5000+,MSI K9A2 CF-F AM2+, G. Skill DDR2 800 2g, ATI 2600 pro(64bit). great system for the price

Rating + 5 To think, some people don't like Vista.

Pros: Well it's the 64 bit so it allows me to put 8 Gbs of Ram in my computer. Vista uses DX10 which makes games like Age of Conan look that much nicer. And the system is pretty simplified for anyone to use.

Cons: Well... It didn't install correctly the first time but a reinstall fixed that.

Other Thoughts: Everyone complains that Vista uses too much resources, but each OS uses more then the last so it's expected to happen, of my 4 gigs of Ram, it only uses 25% while idle, which leaves me 3 gigs which is too much ram for the time being anyway.

Pros: Its very user friendly and the new features MS added are really great. I had no problem getting it installed and going.

Cons: Make sure you get all the updates as soon as possible. You will run into bugs without them.

Other Thoughts: Other then the minor things this really is a great operating system. I will take vista over xp any day. If you plan on building a new comp and want the best make sure you get vista 64 bit. You wont regret it with 8 gigs of ram.

Rating + 3 Can be good

Pros: Looks great, DX10 does make many of the newer games look and run alot better than DX9. I currently have 2 gigs of ram and it does run very nicely, but I will definitly be picking up the extra 2 to make this run even better. With the price of RAM that you can get off of Newegg you can spend just $120 and get 4 gigs of quality RAM no problem.

The customization options you get now are very refreshing. Also the organization capabilities that come standard are great.

Cons: Heres why I gave it a 3 star rating and please be aware of this before you purchase the 64 bit version, DRIVERS!!!!! I am not able to install numerous programs and even hardware because of driver errors with the 64 bit. If you try and install the drivers from which ever CD your using Vista will flat out tell you NO. Then your left scouring manufacturing websites looking for 64 bit drivers.

Because of this reason I am actually purchasing the 32 bit version of Vista instead. I do not plan on having to purchase all new 64 bit ready motherboards and sound devices just because of license issues with the manufacturers.

Other Thoughts: All I can say is research all of the hardware you have before buying. Check the manufacturer websites and make sure there are 64 bit drivers for your hardware. Also I highly recommend googling whatever hardware you have and adding Vista 64 to the end of it and see if there are other people having issues with that piece.

Rating + 5 Awesome OS

Pros: Great operating system, runs fast and smooth. There are no excess programs and the visualizations are great. After a lot of bad reviews I've read for Vista, I was a bit skeptical of buying it. However, I'm more than satisfied with Vista 64-bit and don't regret buying it one bit.

Cons: I guess you would need a lot of RAM to run Vista smoothly, but it's no problem for me since I have 4GB.

Other Thoughts: My PC: Intel Core 2 Duo e4600, 4GB DDR2 800 A-Data RAM, GeForce 8400GS Graphics.

Rating + 3 Running 4 gigs of RAM after headache

Pros: finally managed to get it to run 4 gigs of RAM after about 4 days

Cons: 64-bit still needs update to run 4 gigs, this frustrated me for hours...

Other Thoughts: With 4 gigs of RAM installed, B.S.O.D. pops up at startup everytime until you get Update for Windows Vista (KB929777)

Rating + 5 Vista 64 bit is Good

Pros: Contrary to popular belief vista has become alot more stable and I have not encountered any problems with my vista yet. It is actually very fast and reliable. The install took me about 10 to 15 min. There was no excess software that came with it. with my 4 gigabytes of ram and my Q6600 quadcore processor I can multitask and even run deskspace as well as other programs. I would recommend a mid level or good graphics card though... the visualizations are breath taking however If you have a bad graphics card some of the visulizations will get really annoying really fast.

ASUS p5n-d, 4 gig mushkin, bfg 8800 gt, q660 intel quadcore,

Cons: I hate paying for operating systems( usually download my operating system) but I guess one could argue that vista was worth it (especially 64 bit)....

Other Thoughts: New egg delivers fast...like seriously fast....I was supprised how fast it came it....

Rating + 1 Unless you have 4GB RAM

Pros: Can't think of one.

Cons: Takes too much RAM to run it smoothly. 64 bit version doesn't run 32 bit program stable. Too much useless processes that I can't kill. Can't play any game with 2GB RAM without the games crashing to desktop. DX10 is overrated. Takes too much hard drive to install and eats it so fast.

Other Thoughts: Even Mac OS X now has POSIX interface that allows the user to open xterm and do all GNU stuff. The only reason that I still install Windows is for gaming, otherwise I'll go with Linux all the way. For spread sheet I have awk and sed. For word processing I have Latex, and for slide show I have open office. We need FAST OS that is straght and easy to use, not good looking one.

Rating + 5 For new Systems this is the way to go!!

Pros: With 4 gigs of ram this OS is very fast and stable. I built a new system around this OS and couldn't be happier. Even games that wouldn't work in XP are working in Vista!!! Imagine that!!

Cons: It is a resource monster so only use on new systems with a dual core and at least 2 gigs of ram. On old hardware this will be slower the XP.

Other Thoughts: I was pretty skeptical of Vista when it came out. I got the 32 bit basic version and tried to install it on a single core 64 bit AMD CPU with a gig of ram. It was slow and unstable. With SP1 and modern hardware this is the way to go! DDR2 ram is pretty cheap these days as well as CPU prices coming down all the time. Give it an honest try on your new system and you won't be dissapointed!!!

Rating + 3 Great when it works.

Pros: Cool features, looks good, DirectX10, and seems very responsive.

Cons: Vista can be a real pain to install; It took me two full days and at least ten reinstalls to get it working on a new machine with Vista-compatible hardware. I encountered stuck black screens, a variety of error codes, and even a corrupted hard drive.

Other Thoughts: Windows Vista x64, when stable, is a good operating system. In some cases it takes tons of patience to get it to that point, though.

Rating + 5 Vista is Great..64 Bit is Excellent

Pros: Vista Home Premium is all you need. The MC, and drivers for just about anything is plug and play. Ignore all the Apple commercials...kind of dirty marketing. Vista is WAY better than XP. It has a few bug...SP1 gets rid of 99 % of them. Vista also has a lot of self help diagnostics built in to solve issues. 9 out of ten times Vista will "adapt" like the Borg to make things work.

Cons: Not a lot of software support for older version of programs you might want. Drivers for printers and scanners a bit of a problem, but Vuescan helps. Start64 is another resource to use.

Other Thoughts: A lot of people are just plain afraid of Vista because it is new...don't be; it is way superior. It takes some retraining of the mind, but not much. It is way more stable than people make it out to be. XP is a joke compared to Vista 64 Bit. Those Apple commercials are just Dirty pool...Vista is fine!

Rating + 4 preety good os

Pros: do not listen to all the reviews about "vista sucks" they have no idea what they are taking about, its a good os, abviosly there are a few little bugs but dont all products/program/os have them?

Cons: the only big issues that i cam up with but was solved by getting sp1 was that it would boot up, crash, restar, boot, crash, retart...ect, ya that did suck
thte only thing else i can think out is that ffact that its looks a bit diffent then xp and takes a bit getting used to
only i have not fully switched over (dual booting with xp) mosty because i jsut got a new computer and now i have to transfer all my files and programs again and i dont want to do that again
so it will be a while before i complty cahgne over but thats more personal

Other Thoughts: yes vista is a resorse "hog", but i was under the impresson thats whats supose to happen it take advantage of the hardware that out today
so if you have a bad cpu or under 2 gb ram, do not get vista it will suck on your computer
well all in all i like it, but i will say you can safly stick with xp and you will still be fine so basicly upgrade if you have the money and the computer power, if you dont dont worry about it

Rating + 5 Great OS

Pros: Dont believe the hype. I am not going to say Vista is the best OS ever but from an honest standpoint I really enjoy it. Its simple and easy for people who do basic things on computers and runs great. There were a few issues when it first came out but between the Service Packs and constant updates it runs great for me and gaming is not affected like many say.

Cons: Takes some time to get use to the locations of software and settings, especially for people who have used XP for a long time.

Other Thoughts: Dont complain if you put it on your 3 year old Comp*q computer and it doesnt turn on. Vista is a highly advanced OS that takes andvantage of the technology of today. SO YES you do have to have a nice computer to run it but thats the way it works. Dont like it stick with XP.

Rating + 3 Kind of OK

Pros: Had Vista Premium for more than a year now, using it as a Media Center machine exclusively. Works well, I like the Media Center app, it's really great in a living room.

Cons: Not stable. Scheduled mine to reboot every 2 days at 3am, and that makes it usable. It can not run for a very long time without crashing (my XP used to run for months, was rebooted for updates only). It is a bit iffy on Windows Updates (I'd say 1 out of 5 just freezes my machine, have to do a "hard reboot" with the reset button).

Other Thoughts: Premium is a better buy than Ultimate, because MS did not deliver on the "extras" that were supposed to come with Ultimate.

Pros: Looks cool. Rly fast, indexed searching is king. Boots up faster than XP. Seems to run great on 2Gigs of RAM...I don't use prorams like photoshop, but I do utilize Visual C++ and games.

Cons: Flip 3D is HIGHLY overated. Altho a cool feature, not worth the extra money. Settle with basic. No support for 64-bit or DX10, and looks like there ain't going to be. The industry is trying to skip Vista all together.

Other Thoughts: If u need Vista, stick with basic. But I'd advise do what the rest of the world is doing, wait until Windows 7. Oh, and the price difference between versions r a rip off.

Pros: Beautiful UI! The ease of use is incredible. Superfetch is a dream with enough RAM. Using XP feels old now. The memory management of Vista, although quite liberal, is very good.
I have had this OS for quite some time now and now that I'm used to it I love it. Everything takes less effort than XP. Finding files, starting games, searching the hard disk, setting up networks, the list goes on. The best way to describe it is that what takes 10 clicks in XP seems to only take 3 clicks in Vista. People argue that XP is faster (which I disagree with), but you can't argue that Vista relies a lot less on the speed of the user.

Cons: Definitely bloated with useless services. That's nothing a little tweaking can't take care of. 3D applications are still slower than XP but other than that the performance is on par or better than XP. 64 bit applications are still hard to come by, and there are no DX10 games out that aren't DX9 ports. I also wish this OS had a highly customizable core but who am I kidding?

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't recommend anything under 8GB. I'm sure 4GB and 6GB works fine but for true breathing room, especially for programs like Photoshop, 8GB is a must.

Pros: Very noticeable performance increase in games with my Q6600 2.4 ghz, 4 GB DDR2 800 and EVGA 7900 GTX SLI. The GUI is absolutely stunning. It's extremely vivid and very easy on the eyes. The new Alt+Tab function is awesome. Very stable and installed in about 20 minutes (+2 hours 30 mins for updates and all my other stuff). Great OS!!!

Rating + 5 Vista 64 bit

Pros: Vista 64-bit Home Premium is A good OS. I've not only jumped from XP, but I also moved on from 32-bit to now 64-bit. Vista 64-bit can hold much more ram memory, which is good for me because I tend to have a lot of application on my desk top page. It's A new look for windows, and it still support most 32-bit programs. It's fast and all my games work well with it. I am surprized to see that Vista 64-bit works well with all my programs and hardware.

Cons: Need 4 gigs of ram to enjoy it. Vista 64-bit takes awhile to shut down.

Other Thoughts: If you are a gamer, have about 4 gigs of ram (or trying to get 8 gigs and up) and your hardware is capable of 64-bit, then you should get it to improve your system.

Rating + 5 64 Bit Vista Flies!

Pros: VERY fast OS when using a 64bit Quad Core and 4gbs of ram!
Home Premium has a lot of nice features that aren’t found in the basic version, the included media center is great for entertainment.
DirectX 10 games, Like Crysis and Bioshock look and play better than on XP

Cons: None, this is the windows version you need to get.

Other Thoughts: 3rd Generation 64bit OS from MS has finally matured. It is Ultra compatible with older software and 32bit applications. The 64bit written applications out-right fly.

Pros: Excellent OS, totally worth every penny. I reccommend getting this rather than the 32 bit version if you're building a gaming rig or anyother high performance machine, just be sure to have 4 gigs of ram, it will work with 2 gigs, but it is far more efficient with 4 gigs.

Cons: Perhaps 1 out of every 100 or so games crash, but that's pretty good seeing that none of my games were built for 64 bit vista. Every other software i've used works perfectly.

Other Thoughts: Very smooth, very efficient OS, worth the buy if you're going to build a gaming rig or use it for ram intensive things.

Pros: The OS is very pretty, and once you get your drivers all set, it's stable. Be sure to find drivers for all your hardware before you install. Be sure to use Windows update for SP1 and double check your driver compatibility for SP1. I didn't ahve any issues, but know many who have.

Cons: Elusive drivers, but is the OS to blame, or the hardware manufacturers?

Pros: I had serious reservations about upgrading to Vista, especially x64, but after building a serious gaming rig for my brother that he requested have an x64 OS, I was convinced. His build went very smoothly and has never had a hiccup.

Cons: You really need to do your homework thoroughly concerning drivers for any hardware you plan on using with x64. I personally had no difficulties finding them for all my hardware but there are plenty of others who have. Also, if you use an Intel chipset mobo, you'll need to decide whether or not to enable AHCI which opens a whole can of worms.

Other Thoughts: Runs amazingly fast.

Pros: fast, dx10, looks pretty

Cons: biggest pain in the a** to get working. an into the over 4gb of memory error with corsair xms3 1333 ddr3 on an evga 790i, would blue screen all over the place. Had trouble recognizing a wd 500 se16 drive more blue screens. Could not clean install the os with more than one sata drive connected. Pros: It works, and it does what it is supposed to. Reformats and sets up the OS on your drive way faster than any Microsoft OS before it. First time I ever booted it up, I thought there was an error it was so fast.

Cons: Resource hog. Takes like 15% of my 4gb's of ram at idle to just run the Aero desktop.

Pros: Installing Vista 64 is an absolute breeze. For anyone that's used to installing past OS's like XP, and W2K, you'll be pleasently surprised. It's much quicker, more automated, and formatting the HDDs during setup takes no time at all. I formatted the 500GB HDD twice because it was so fast I was sure the first time something must have gone wrong.

Cons: vista is still a little buggy. I noticed the widget side bar showed up white once after starup, and didn't go clear until after a program was opened.

Other Thoughts: Allowed me to utilize all 4GB of ram.. This system won't be used for gaming, so I can't comment on 3d performance

Rating + 5 awesome

Pros: The new installment of the windows operating system saga.

Looks and feels great. New features for windows, that mac users are use to, like the very easy snipping tool, which allows you to click the icon, which then allows you to select what you want to take a screen shot of, save, then view. Very nice to have if you like to post random stuff in forums.

Cons: 64bit vista is the black sheep right now. With 3d mark scores, be sure to note performance decrease. HOWEVER it actually isn't really decreasing your performance.

with a lot of games, comes bugs, although this is being worked on 24/7 by many people, so don't worry because vista wont be the black sheep for much longer. every day bugs get fixed, meaning 64bit vista will be or should be your first consideration for choosing an OS. Make sure to round up all the hot fixes you'll need for all your programs, grab the service pack one asap after install. Don't bother buying it, just go ahead and download. if you have a connection greater then 56k, you won't be waiting long for it to download.

Other Thoughts: Like i stated, any bugs you've heard of wont last long. At first Crysis was having a hack of a time on my system, but after some hot fixes, and updates, the game runs very smooth. Not to mention everything else i use. Make sure you turn off
UAC right away. I heard that running as admin will cause grief, as far as system messages go. When you run the OS as admin, i guess you can get a virus, or a hacker bothering you easier. So they want you to not run as admin, however i found that if you are not admin you go to click on a program, and it says "you have to be an admin to do that" so about 30 minutes later i switched back to admin. I haven't had any problems yet, seeing how windows defender is awesome, and you get 90 days free of windows live care one, which is also awesome.

Rating + 5 Vista!?

Pros: I installed this on a new hard drive and everything went perfectly smooth. once i logged in there was of course a ridiculous amount of updates that windows needs to install! If you choose to get this OS then i recommend that you DON'T DO ANYTHING until windows is all updated. that will prevent errors. the 64-bit design allowed me to use a full 4GB of ram. which is awesome cause I'm a gamer and vista itself uses a GB of ram at startup! speaking of gaming, dx10 is good but not all that amazing. ps- you shouldn't be getting the 64-bit unless your a serious computer user or a gamer. and by serious computer user i mean someone who knows lots of technical stuff.

Cons: 64-bit is not compatible with a lot of programs. but thats not vistas fault. its the fault of those other companies. i only had to change my anti virus program when i got this as everything else was compatible for me.

Other Thoughts: since xp is going off the market i recommend this version of vista. premium has good features, and ultimate is a total waste. I'm happy with my vista :)

Cons: Support for 64 bit is scarce. But this is not the OS fault, but can be a deciding factor when buying.

Other Thoughts: There is a learnig curve but when ever there is a major OS change it is the case. There are some bugs but there again there always is with new OS. So you can etheir get now and deal or wait till they have most of them worked out but by then they are usually coming out with a new OS

Rating + 5 Highly underrated

Pros: Runs great and provides good features. More stable than Windows XP in my opinion.

Cons: Users that don't know how to configure things. Read some user guides that tell you how to set things up and what things to disable with this OS. You can get it running just as well as Windows XP if you bother to tweak things. That being said, Microsoft really should have left things at lower-end settings so the less computer oriented could use this OS without any major slow downs.

Also, this OS is NOT compliant with DirectX9 only games unless you go and download the various DirectX9 dll's and put them in your system32 directory. Then everything should work fine.

Other Thoughts: Hasn't let me down so far. Vista gets a lot of unfair criticism. People always complain when they have to learn/configure something new....

Rating + 5 My Experience

Pros: I purchased this to dual boot with XP Pro and give it a spin to see what it was all about. I eventually reformatted the disks and said goodbye to XP Pro, and have not looked back since. A few things that I liked are the ability to watch DVD's without 3rd party software, the ease of RAID setup without the need for a floppy as the drivers are already there, and after installation, i did not need to run the outdated chipset driver disk because the ethernet drivers were also already included and all I needed to do was navigate to the sites and download the latest ones. I am just an average user, so all the programs I have installed run great. I have used 2x1GB of Dominator 1066 RAM and my system ran just fine. I did upgrade to 2x2GB of the same and everything runs silky smooth. The recent Creative audio drivers are working great for my X-Fi Fat Pro with no issues in games so far. Also, all of the updates installed without any issue and the RAM utilization is wonderful to me.

Cons: I really do not like the included disk defragmenter as it just runs without any visual like the one in XP. I really do not know why this bothers me, but it does. Also, Vista handles clean installs differently and it just does not feel like it is really a "clean" installation. I noticed that my hard disk space was disappearing one day and was wondering what was going on. Vista handles System Restore differently and I decided to disable it and delete the ones it had already created. This action freed up several GB's of disk space and everything ran alot smoother. I also eventually disabled the User Account Control "feature" and love it.

Pros: Current orders come with SP1 disc. This is a very good looking OS. Nice clean, runs well on my system. I really am enjoying it. It has many new features, and in my opinion improves on many of those found in earlier windows versions. Worth getting.

Cons: Uses a MINIMUM of 512 megs of memory on my system even with no programs open. Usually runs between 512 megs and 1.5 gigs, but not a problem for this users machine.

Rating + 4 Not the greatest OS

Pros: It's new, and it looks cool. The OEM version works fine for setup and installation. Actually with the system it was loaded for, it setup on the system fine. However see cons.

Cons: Once Vista was installed, the nightmare began. Biggest issues have been with the SATA Mirroring. Every time you reboot, it messes up the mirror. Seems to be a shutdown issue with Vista.
Simple things like importing mail is a pain, unless you know the fix (listed on MS's site) to correct it. Spent more time getting it to work than it did to load it. Sad.

Other Thoughts: Not the best OS on the market yet, just the newest. And that doesn't make it a great product. However if you do not plan to install any older hardware, or software, and in fact don't do too many different things to it, it should run very well. Heaven help you if you want to setup things like Quickbooks with muiltiple users though. Ugh.

Rating + 2 Just choose XP

Pros: Nice interface... when it works. A few more cool features. New tools make computing easier and less time consuming. Networking is simplified and works a lot better than on XP. User accounts are set up much better.

Cons: Oh, where to start. Basically, I get the blue screen of death every so often when using certain programs. (Example: Internet Explorer). Windows updates has NEVER worked on my current install, so I cannot install service pack 1, but I do not want to reinstall the OS. The interface is incredibly slow compared to XP, where my PC would fly with my current specs. All the graphical effects really rob the system of resources and make it very sluggish, even with a GeForce 7900OC, 2GB ram and a Core 2 Duo 6420.

Other Thoughts: It just seems like what you gain from installing Vista is not worth all the cons. I would just stick with XP for now, upgrade to Vista when they come out with a service pack that actually does something. Oh, and Service Pack 1 on Vista has solved no one's problems with their OS. Guess we'll wait another two years of SP2.

Pros: Finds drivers for you. This is a MAJOR plus. I heard lots of complaining about Vista x64 not taking unsigned drivers. While that may be true, I haven't tried. Windows Update found all the correct updates. It's a pretty OS. FAST install.

Cons: 5 hours of updating (but that can be fixed with the $10 more Vista Home Premium SP1 OEM). Needs more ram than previous OS's. Using 2 GB, it takes up 1GB sitting at the desktop. I had to disable Sidebar as well. It's just in the way.

Other Thoughts: Pretty much the only reason this is a 4-egg review is because if it were a 5-egg, it would seem like I was a Vista fanatic.

Rating + 3 Typical MS

Pros: Its the latest OS from Microsoft. Vista theme is cool.
Thats IT! When/if it crashes it will actually repair itself on next reboot.

Cons: Where to start. Took 3 times fresh install to fully load the OS. Once installed and at desktop i "attempted" to update my Vista via Windows update. BSOD several times with 2 generic error codes which vista knowledge base has no explanation. At this point it still has 10 updates to install but fails every time. Of course the updates are for compatibility and stability. I've tried several ways. Installed manufacturers MB,video drivers then MS updated..bomb. Installed MS update MB drivers along with updates...bomb. Kept MS installed default drivers..updated...wont update 10 patches which is where i am now.

Other Thoughts: I installed off my SATA DVD/RW Lite-on with out problem. Remember to select all the files at once for raid/sata before installing. Power saving mode requires tweaking. I dont like everything cutting off like its dead only to wake up when i move the mouse. Powersupply, every fan, CPU, harddrives..everything turns off like your computers dead as default.
BUGGED AS HELL imho. Typical new MS OS..it will another year or two before its a viable world wide OS.

Rating + 4 Takes some getting used to

Pros: Nice, clean interface (i.e.-Aero), DX10 & DX10.1 w/ SP1, simple initial install, 64 bit, faster searches once files are indexed, I like the sidebar & gadgets, Vista media player is a nice update. Love the OEM pack - easily the best value of all Vista options.

Cons: Takes some getting used to when navigating, User Account Control (UAC) is annoying as hell but maybe I just don't know how to adjust the settings yet, needed to adjust some BIOS settings for my mobo to report my full 4GB of memory to the OS. Resource hog for marginal systems but runs fine on my Core 2 E6600, 4GB DDR2 800, X-Fi XtremeMusic, & GeForce 8800GT.

Other Thoughts: I was reluctant to update from XP but have found no hardware or software compatibility issues I can see yet and drivers should only improve. I loaded up Bioshock to check out DX10 & the effects are subtle but really nice if you know what to look for; can't wait for developers to release games that really take advantage of it (i.e.-Source engine update, BF3, etc.).

SP1 cannot be slipstreamed into Vista like previous versions of windows. Make sure and use only the most recent driver available and update often. Also, Vista does not include IHC9R drivers, so have a disk ready.

Rating + 5 Good OS

Pros: Easy to use, very user friendly. Allows more than 4 GB of ram. Sleek and attractive interface. Runs nicely once the updates are installed.

Cons: Utilizes a large amount of system memory during normal operation, with the aero interface on it's using 1.5 GB of ram idle. The afformentioned ram recognition errors can cause hours of irritation if you don't catch the problem.

Other Thoughts: Before deciding to go 64 bit I'd heard that there was nearly no support for regular programs. However I wanted to use more ram than 32 bit can support so I decided to go with it anyway. I've only had problems with one program after installing around 130 GB of programs(comodo antivirus).

Rating + 2 Extremely frustrating

Pros: Does some things quite well (e.g., auto-recognizing satellite modem).

Cons: Migrated from XP Pro after mobo death. Got new ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe mobo. Initially had old IDE HD plugged in. Bad idea. Blue screen of death dozens of times during setup, which ended up taking abt 20 hr. Proper BIOS setup is critical. For some reason, ASUS BIOS default was not plug-and-play (PNP). Many problems resolved after setting to PNP. But, still crashes or freezes at least once in about 50% of sessions. SP1 may help, dunno yet. Vista64 wouldn't work with many $1000s worth of software (incl. Mathematica and SPSS statistical software). Vista is also much unlike XP. Being Admin doesn't mean software runs as Admin. You have to right-click & select Run As Admin. OS constantly requests permission to do the simplest things, e.g. move a file from one place to the other. It's nuts. Overall, the most frustrating experience I've ever had w. an OS in 20 yr of computing.

Other Thoughts: Why must consumers be used as beta-testers for Microsoft??

Rating + 5 I'm Liking it

Pros: Easiest install of all time. I'm running a basic setup with 1 hard drive, 1 video card, etc and it was nearly automatic. I've been able to find 64 bit drivers for everything and so far all my games are functioning fine. The only problem I had was my motherboard was set one day in advance and the Windows Experience Index wouldn't update after Windows synced with a time server. I simply deleted the datastore information and I was good to go.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Got this so I could use 4 gigs of ram.

Rating + 4 install on nvidia with 2GB, no more...then add in rest!

Pros: User interface is better than XP, especially Aero
Love the gimmick of cascading windows using windows + tab rather than alt+tab
Extra utilities like DVD burning are good
Seems to be very, very stable after adding in SP1

Cons: There is a vista issue on NVIDIA motherboards where if you are using DDR2 you have to install 2 GB and no more or no less to get it to install (so I had to remove 2 GB from my machine). After installation install service pack 1 and then install the extra 2 GB (assuming you have 4x1GB of RAM).
You have no idea how long it took me to find this issue and how frustrated I was that I was unable to even install vista 64 after having XP 64 working fine.

Pros: Can take advantage of 4 gigs of RAM, DX10 support, 64-bit application support, super easy install.

Cons: Had to ditch old TV tuner card; no 64-bit drivers. Not a huge loss, but worth mentioning.

Other Thoughts: After much consideration decided to go with the 64-bit version mainly to enable the use of 4-gigs of memory. Have had no problems with the OS so far and now feel very confident using Vista.

Rating + 5 Perfectly fine

Pros: Not sure why people think negatively of this OS unless you're using Beta versions. This is my 3rd Vista install, the first one being 64bit. No problems at all, installed perfectly and smoothly, no hang ups, nothing. Fresh install. And not a bad price really for this.

Cons: Honestly....none come to mind.

Other Thoughts: Not crazy about this versions process of installing. All 3 Vistas I've done do this. You'll get the green vista green, your mouse arrow, and nothing. Not sure why Microsoft couldn't put some sort of status bar there. My GF kept asking me if it was broke or something...said no, its installing the load files, just doesn't say it.

Pros: Second copy of Vista, and like the first, no issues. Love the OS

Cons: memory HOG

Other Thoughts: Really need new up to date hardware when using Vista as the system requirements should be higher than what is listed.

Rating + 5 Works like a dream

Pros: Vista works just like it should, no errors or crashes ever since I build my first machine. No blue screens or anything. As long as you get Vista compatible video cards, and motherboards Vista runs without a hitch.

Cons: People who complain about Vista crashing and errors all the time are people who don't have Vista drivers (old motherboards or videocards and etc.) as long as you have up to date products that say they are compatible with Vista you don't get all of that grief everyone is complainging about, VISTA IS NOT A BAD OS!!!

Other Thoughts: Don't ever buy a mobo that does not say it supports Vista or you will get random reboots, only get Vista compatible stuff that has Vista drivers, or you can get Vista drivers online.

Pros: Does what an OS is supposed to do.

Cons: HUGE memory hog. Finding hardware and drivers to work with it can be a challenge. Networking is infinitely more difficult with Vista as opposed to XP. Forcing drivers to be signed is really annoying me.

Other Thoughts: I wish there were more 64-bit versions of software out there.

Rating + 4 It's Vista...

Pros: Well...it runs decently with the system I have. It supports over 4GB's of RAM. It has DX10.

Cons: I had an issue with it coming out of sleep mode and killing off my internet connection to "Local Only." For some reason, resetting the CMOS fixed this issue...Not sure how that one works. Also, if you try to install the OS on more than 2gb's of RAM, it will blue screen. Had to wait to put in my other 2gb stick until the OS was up.

Rating + 5 It's been close to flawless

Pros: Two weeks ago, I decided to build myself a new PC to replace my 5+ yr old Dell. Obviously, I was going to go with Vista. Since I went with a 2.6Ghz AMD Athlon 64 X2 and 4GB of RAM, I decided to use the 64-bit version. After reading up, I was worried that it might be buggy/quirky or that some of my software or hardware would be incompatible. Everything went amazingly smoothly. I've had zero major problems and very few minor ones. Recognized my 4GB RAM without a hitch. Not a single crash / hang. This installed much more easily than XP. The system seems extremely stable.

Cons: Wish it was cheaper. Also, I heard there may be a new OS coming out relatively soon.

Other Thoughts: The one exception to the smooth install I describe above was essentially my fault. I had my old hard drive with XP on it when I installed Vista (onto a new drive). It defaulted to a dual boot system and the MBR (or somesuch) was on the old drive. I ended up disconnecting the old drive and reinstalling Vista to get everything right.

Rating + 4 It's not bad.

Pros: Slick UI, better organization, quicker power downs, effective use of resources (other than GUI/OS). Will manage higher amounts of memory well.

Cons: I had a slight quirk getting it to boot-up from a low power state, but I'm apprehensive to blame the os. I think I might have a little BIOS tweaking to do.

Other Thoughts: Previous system to this I had one with Windows Media Center 2005 and I wasn't very fond of it from the get go. Previous to that I had XP Pro and I liked it, so far Vista Home Premium has been smooth, installation was seemingly quick and painless considering this OS install is pretty big. The "permission" pop-up isn't annoying, I'm rather pleased with it.

Rating + 5 Excellent OS

Pros: This is a rock solid operating system. It is more stable than any Windows product I have ever used. It is very secure and installed on 2 new systems without a hitch. The gadgets are a nice addition, as well as the other visual appeal. The 64 bit version sees all of my RAM. I am a big gamer and this works great with all my games.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Anyone who gives this a bad rating is either non-computer savvy, or just trying to run it on a very old system. I have yet to have a problem getting this software to work and I found all my 64 bit drivers without a problem. It pretty much installs itself. I do recommend always doing a clean install anytime you install a new OS.

Rating + 5 Windows VISTA 64, wave of the future

Pros: Latest Operating System for a 64bit Processor. It's pretty and easy to use. WinXP to WinVista is like Win98 to WinXP, at first you don't want to upgrade, but then when you do, it's easy to catch up, plus you get all the new technology benefits. My advice, get away from Windows XP and move over to Vista, because the later you convert, the harder you'll catch up.

Cons: Had trouble installing it from 2x SATA-II in RAID 0. You have to first Format the SATA-II drives in another computer and then use your new Motherboard's bios/utilities to set the RAID 0. Set boot priority to the SATA-II drives in bios, then Install Vista and let it recognize your RAID by inserting a driver that came with your motherboard's CD using a USB thumbdrive or Floppy. After you've done that, everything else is a breeze. Vista is so RAM intensive, running nothing and just the desktop, it's eating up 500-800MB of RAM straight up... I suggest going 2GB minimum but 4GB optimum.

Other Thoughts: I was using an Asus m3a32-mvp deluxe motherboard, 2x Seagate Barracuda ES.2 ST3250310NS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM, 2GB(1GBx2) OCZ Reaper DDR2 800, and the rest is not important.

Rating + 3 The Vista Project/Experiment

Pros: Pretty to look at, nice functionality and user interface. Once up and running, it is very userfriendly. Secure for dummies.

Cons: Absolutely horrible to get up and running. Very difficult to trouble shoot issues with installation and networking. could not get it online for 5 days, with 6-7 hours a day of troubleshooting and seeking tech support from non-microsoft technicians, as they could not figure out how to assist with the issues.

Other Thoughts: Finally got it up and solved all issues. No problems since. A few applications and games don't work properly, but they are old, unnecessary, items. I just like some of my old games for the old time nostalgic fun of them. Can't play them with all things working, like sound on my VOIP, while playing some games. Some kind of conflict with drivers or multiple sound applications, etc. No one can help, so I will eventually have to become an expert on it and fix it as with all the other issues. Once you work the bugs out it is a fine and dependable O.S.

Rating + 5 Very Nice System

Pros: Before I built my computer, I made sure everything I bought for it, was Vista Certified. It loaded really nice and easy and about a week after install, Microsoft brought out a Service Pack 1 Update which did fix the minor bugs in it. Runs fast and easy. Thought I would have problems with some of the programs I already had but everything loaded nice.

Cons: Had a blue screen twice after installing a Vision Tek TV tuner but using the Microsoft's driver instead of Vision Tek's fixed the problem.

Other Thoughts: Microsoft shouldn't have this many different versions of its operating system. They should only sell Premium and Ultimate.

Rating + 4 New OS not so bad

Pros: overall a good OS, only issue is my system that's a 939 and only able to use 4 GBs ram... other wise working great, even running sli, have all hardware running as with xp (running a dual boot)and can only say that I'm glad I tried it.. I will be building a new system (for my Christmas present to myself) and will be using this again.. this hate to give brother Bill more money....

Cons: so far none found, other than having to "buy" some software that was working on xp... it seems to find any software that my NOT have been original :(

Other Thoughts: can only say that I am overall completely satisfied with this OS.. just be sure that you have "real software to use this program... as well as plenty of ram, it is HUNGRY for it for sure. running sli with this OS can be tricky to get set-up, but once it's there, no problem... ;-)

Rating + 4 where's SP1

Pros: Good OS, good stability with SP1, Media plan functionality is relatively stable, etc.

Cons: Why can't I buy the SP1 version. SP1 has been available for download for a month. I figures that by now I should be getting a DVD with it already included. Sure, I can download it, but will need to waste at least another hour of my time installing.

Other Thoughts: I bought this same version for another build a few months ago, and have already downloaded and installed SP1, so am familiar with Vista. Just didn't want to have to bother with the download process again.

Rating + 3 Windows Vista 64-bit OS

Pros: It was only 99 dollars. Very easy to install. Has a few good features such as the side bar where you can have different applications showing CPU usage and heat, weather, if you have xm radio you can use it as the host of your xm player.

Cons: Constantly asks permission to open and allow programs, even with a firewall disabled. Startup is not as fast as XP. File locations are different than Windows XP but you get used to it.

Other Thoughts: I would much rather use XP but Vista was the newest thing so I assumed it would be the best. Will take some getting used to. Hopefully it gets better in the future.

Rating + 3 ....What they don't tell you

Pros: Newegg was as helpful as possible - even gave me $25 credit.

Cons: First of all, I had to return the DVD, because it was bad... Second, most people don't do their homework when purchasing the System Builder's Pack... Myself being one of them, unfortunately. If you buy this software, instead of the standard retail version of Vista: a) they software is tied to the motherboard -- meaning that if you get a new board or even if the board malfunctions anf you need a new one, you have to shell out more $$ for the O.S. b) Not a big deal for me, but for many who need software support from microsoft sometimes, tough luck - you have to pay.

Other Thoughts: Think of it like this -- The software is really intended for ccmputer manufacturers who buy in bulk (Dell, HP, etc). These companies provide the product support for their own products. If you buy this, you get to be your own support. Since I was told that it would be fine for me (the same a the retail, but it obviously is not, Newegg credited me $25 toward my next purchase.) The disc didn;'t work when I tried to install with a new build, but Newegg is allowing me an exchange to see what happens. In the meantime, I bought the full software, since the motherboard issue is not worth saving $140.

Rating + 5 Officially an MS Vista fan

Pros: Either you love MS or you hate it. I have come to love Vista! I just put together a new system. It was easier than falling and hitting the earth. I have heard of others having difficulties with Vista so I was skeptical. I began the install...... WOW!! NO problems what so ever!! Never stalled, locked, BSOD, or hung. I had only 1 driver issue and that was fixed at the click of the mouse. Set up was the easiest thing I've done in 8 PC builds.

Cons: Right now....nothing.
