Rating + 5 Great router with VPN

Pros: Simple to set up, inexpensive, rock solid stable

Cons: I haven't yet gotten the VPN going between the two 3com boxes, but I haven't really tried.

Other Thoughts: This is a very decent router, especially for one that includes VPN capability. I haven't had any issues with it dropping connections. It is on 24/7/365.

Rating + 2 Not impressed

Pros: It still works after more than a year

Cons: Unstable with concurrent connections such as running p2p clients and online gaming.

Other Thoughts: As mentioned above, this router is simply unstable. It often drops connections at the most inopportune moments and needs to be power cycled. I am going to eventually replace it.

Rating + 1 Hangs, Unreliable

Pros: Simple to set up. Seemed to have all the necessary features. Will work if only using for email and web surfing.

Cons: Completely unreliable. P2P and other intensive applications hang the unit. Needs to be plugged/unplugged to reset. Unusable. Returned for a refund.

Rating + 5 Easy to use Fantastic.

Pros: Well it was easy as just connecting my cables in the right place and just as other router does it connected me to the internet. Pretty fast and realiable. ^^

Cons: It's very wierd. When I first got this I was at my apartment. Where I was using COX ISP however This router would not allow me to connect to internet no matter what I do.

So I brought this Router to my Parents House and Connected it with Cable modem there. And They also use COX ISP and u know what TA DA!!! It works without me doing anything to it. Just connected it that was very wierd so I just left the router at my parents house for them to use and I bought different one.

Other Thoughts: Maybe Im guessing, the internet to the apartment is little different than one to the HOUSE. very wierd It works in my parents house but doesn't work in my apartment. What can I say ....

Rating + 5 Super Stable

Pros: I have owned this router for 8 months and it has never crashed on me. The html-based interface is pretty straightforward and easy to use.

Cons: More LAN ports would be useful. Not really a con, I guess... most other wired routers have 4 LAN ports.

Other Thoughts: Some reviewer a while back said that this router doesn't work for peer-to-peer applications. Not true! I use utorrent pretty regularly and have not had any issues... just make sure you set up the router's port forwarding/virtual server correctly.

Rating + 5 3com does it again

Pros: Rock solid, stable, easy to setup, good features. I was tired of other brands locking up and so I replaced all of my customers routers with 3com, they never call me out for network problems again. This is just another 3com install. Ive used most of there OfficeConnect products, and I cant say enough good things about them.

Cons: wasn't free.

Other Thoughts: Absolutely ROCK SOLID, yea 3com...

Rating + 5 Perfect cheap wired router

Pros: small, cheap, 3com brand, solid firmware, zero drops, responsive, good warranty.

Cons: not gigabit.

Other Thoughts: This thing works awesome. have a small customer lounge in the office that is seperate from our network. have different users in and out every day and not a single drop. quicker routing than the cheaper D brand we had in there before.

Pros: Solid speed and few disconnects even with default settings.

Other Thoughts: Good web based mgmt tool. Runs in a 20 person office. Would buy another if and when wireless is not needed.

Rating + 2 VPN doesn't work with Mac, also locks up

Pros: Initial setup was the best I've experienced of any consumer router. I was completely happy with the defaults -- UPnP off, external ping disabled, etc., etc.

Cons: I bought this router for the VPN capability. It supports IPSec, IPSec with L2TP, and PPTP. The only thing I could get to work with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard was PPTP *without* encryption, which is useless.

Also, after an hour of playing with the settings, attempting to access the device's log via the web admin console would crash it. It would still route, but the admin console would be inaccessible until I power-cycled the router.

Pros: Stable, economical router for the home or small office. Has worked flawlessly right out of the box using factory default settings (I changed only the password). No issues with dropped connections and seems to handle high traffic volume effortlessly.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you can follow instructions this unit is a breeze to set-up. The large number of options allow this router to be configured for almost any scenario however most installations will work perfectly with factory defaults. Newegg rocks!

Pros: yar, lots of options and settings to dig through, some even i didnt have a clue about until i looked them up.

Cons: twas sad password only supports max 12 characters. Had some issues where it wouldnt share my connection until twas handing out dhcp addresses, i initially wanted static addresses. firewall lets everything outbound by default. looked like there was limit of how many rules one could set.

Other Thoughts: tis my first router have set up, took 2 hours; aye
on box it says typical setup less than 15 mins.

Rating + 5 Good router

Pros: Stable. Easy to setup. Fast. We are on a tight budget at my company so I bought 3 of these routers for our critical application which uses 100% of our bandwidth and makes hundreds of new outbound connections per second. I've had one become unresponsive and needed a power cycle in order to come back up, but I believe it happened because we had a bad power outage the night before. I hope it never happens again, both the power outage and the unresponsive router thing.

Cons: User interface. The administrator password timeout for the web admin interface is strange. Sometimes, I'll accidentally close my broser window and get locked out for the admin password timeout period, so don't set it so high.

Other Thoughts: The router seems a little on the flimsy side, but so far has held up to some rough physical usage. DHCP and DNS functions seem ok, but we have a separate DHCP and DNS linux server on our LAN that we use internally, so I haven't used the DHCP/DNS router's features extensively

Rating + 2 Not so good

Pros: A little heavy. Nice color.

Cons: Everything. This router simply can't handle several connections and would not work as I had bought it to.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive for a hotel setup. I wanted to connect this to FOUR 25 port switches. Each switch went to a hotel room. There are about 60 rooms and some go to front desk and the business area. Overall, there are 80 connections, but not all are used at the same time. Well, once I set it up with my laptop to test it, it worked great. This router simply could not handle the load and refused to assign an IP address. If I manually assigned one it would work, but that was impractical for a hotel setting where people attach their own laptops. All in all, this is a bad router. #3COM is a great company and for their great products, only the absurdly expensive ones are great. In the end, I attached a D-Link DIR-655 and it assigned IP addresses great and also had enough power (with the add on antenna) to cover the entire motel area!

Rating + 1 Dont waste your money!

Pros: Looks good.
Nice lights.

Cons: Poor documentation.
The most difficult registration I have EVER encountered(Good luck!)
It arrived with a broken Power supply(Which I had to replace).
I had a very difficult time trying to set this up, which I could not do successfully.
Customer support is nonexistent!
Customer support gave me the telephone number of an outside technician who wanted to charge $350.00 for a half hour of support!

Other Thoughts: 3Com is not interested in consumer products. They are not set up to help consumers.I will NEVER buy a 3COM product again. I will sell this and buy a Linksys WRT54GL.Do you want to buy a used router? Newegg has wonderful service.

Rating + 5 Great router

Pros: Who would have know that such an inexpensive router could work so well...? Got two of them, one installed in the US and the other one overseas, a VPN tunnel between them. These things just work, never need to reboot them, very good throughput.

Cons: Wish they had AES encryption for IPSec tunnel but I knew this before I got them. 3DES max. For AES I would have had to go with either expensive business class routers or with linksys, netgear and dlink that need to be rebooted once a day.

Other Thoughts: Also, DDNS works fine.

Pros: Looks good, 3COM Brand...

Cons: Worked for about an hour, second boot worked intermittent, reboot again and....nothing!

Other Thoughts: Got a quick RMA from Newegg and kicked it out the front door! Very disappointed w/3COM and didn't take a chance ordering another.

Had to purchase a different brand locally to get the network back up and no service calls since!

Rating + 1 Disconnectivity

Pros: The web based configuration interface.

Cons: Some websites pull up fine, generally those that are rather simple in nature. When I try to view pages that are more sophisticated / larger in the amount of data that must be transferred, I get no connectivity. For instance, google.com and yahoo.com pull up fine. When I try to view google maps (zooming in and out), or looking at multiple Youtube videos, the connectivity ceases. I tried using multiple NICs as well. As a final troubleshooting step, I hooked my computer straight up to my cable modem which has a downstream rate of around 10-20 MBPS. The disconnectivity and problems I had before ceased to exist. This is my first time buying a 3com product as well as my last. I wish Buffalo's lawsuit would get settled so they'd put the WHR-HP-G54 wireless routers back on the market.

Other Thoughts: I see many good reviews here, and a few bad ones. Maybe there was just a bad batch of these or something? Also, I had ordered two of these. I troubleshot using both of them. Same problem for both.

Rating + 5 Stable & Solid

Pros: Very easy to setup process. A networking novice can set them up with no headaches. Unlike other routers, I did not have to run a setup program from a cd-rom on my computer just to configure this router. Simply plug in all the required cat5 cables into their correct ports, plug in the power adapter, fire up a web browser and go to the IP Address listed in the instruction manual. It's really that easy! These 3Com routers are stable, solid and easy to configure. Great choice!

Cons: None so far.

I've only had to restart it once (actually power it down) in seven months and that was because I moved the router to another room.

Other Thoughts: I've had no trouble lan gaming and bittorrenting/P2Ping using these routers.

Rating + 5 Best in it's Class

Pros: It works well. Just plug it in and your ready to go. Easy to set up and has good features. I placed this router in front of my WAP to take care of the NAT and SPI. Was a breeze to set up. My speed increased 100+ kbps. I'm very happy with this router.

Cons: I only use this for the basics. Look to other reviews for it's weakness. I like to load it up with multiple downloads and it takes all I throw at it. News/http/irc/ftp/ all work great! Solid performer!

Other Thoughts: Newegg Rocks!

Rating + 5 Fast and Very Flexible

Pros: Very fast throughput.
Excellent Setup.
Works right out of the box.
Intuitive web interface.

Cons: Doesn't have a print server built in.

Other Thoughts: I have owned another 10/100 router that has a parallel server built in that I use constantly so when I bought this it was because I was having problems with my old one (turned out to be the power brick, bought another) so after I fixed the old one I was hesitant to install the 3Com.
I'm glad I did because the throughput was instantly noticable, I went from 500KB/s to about 800KB/s! I configured my old router for the same local IP range and connected them together Local to Local and I am able to use the old one as the print server. SWEET

Pros: Simple, relatively inexpensive (compared to professional routers), DURABLE.

Cons: none, except i bought it so long ago i'm not even sure i got it from the egg

Rating + 1 Never buying from 3com again

Pros: None.

Cons: When it connected to the settings control -- which was very rarely, it usually failed -- it couldn't set up my network. I called 3com for support and the person on the line just completely refused to help me outright. I've never seen anything like this. I've spent 2 weeks trying to get this thing to work, because of the glowing reviews it got here, and now I'm not sure I can even get my money back, from the way the support talked.

Other Thoughts: Hope 3com enjoys the HORRIBLE reputation they're about get on slashdot, digg and reddit.

Rating + 5 Great Router

Pros: Well built, great interface, holds up under heavy use, enough throughput to saturate a 9 Mbps link.

Cons: It has lots of half implemented toy features. This router still does more and better than anything in its class, but if I was expecting everything listed on the box done well I might be mad.

Other Thoughts: Don't set the admin login timeout very high. If your connection is cut while you're working on it and the timeout is 99 minutes, you won't be able to log back in for 99 minutes.

Rating + 5 Great Wired Router

Pros: It worked flawlessly right out of the box. The only thing I changed was the password. The default settings were exactly what I wanted. The unit is constructed more solidly than most of the routers in this class on the market. After running DSL Reports’ speed tests, my cable download connection speed doubled from 3mbs to 6mbs compared to my previous wired router.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Thanks to all the reviewers who took time to evaluate this router before me. Those reviews greatly influenced my choice, so this is my good review to add to the collection. The 3com 3CR858-91 replaced my six or seven year old DLink DI-604. The DLink performed well, but in its old age it began to periodically loose connection, take excessively long times to reconnect, and eventually stopped connecting altogether.

Rating + 5 outperforms

Pros: Excellent performance, small size, flexible and functional interface for all types of users. Applying settings is quick and reliable, where other brands take a long time. Hasn't lost connection ever.

Cons: The "block list" (good for parental control) is limited to a total of 30 (max) keyword/URL entries. The user defined "schedule" for restrictions has no ability to do "overnight shifts" (example: 9pm-7am) or "double shifts" (example: 7-9am AND 6-7pm each day) If you use a router for administrative functions, this can be a bit limiting... but I haven't seen a router yet that shines in this area.

Other Thoughts: I bought this brand because the company I serve uses 700 3com hubs, with nearly zero failures. I'm NOT disappointed. I suggest reading the user's manual from the 3com website before buying, you'll find that this unit will be all you need for a wired 4 port router.

Cons: setting up an account with them to register your product was a bit different than what i'm used to.

Pros: Worked fine right out of the box.

Cons: Some of the instructions had screens different from my HP d4650y with Windows XP, which was a little confusing to me.

Other Thoughts: Thanks to all the reviewers who helped me choose this router to replace my 7 year old Linksys BEFSR41 router that was acting up. Lots of used Linksys routers on #Bay. No used 3com routers on eBa#. That says a lot to me. Thanks Newegg for hosting the reviews and for your excellent service.

Pros: Easy installation, easy configuration and set-up, very stable. Zero (as in none) resets since it was installed. Good throughput to 3mbs cable.

Cons: None for a home or small office. Would consider a larger enterprise router for larger installations (> 20 users).

Other Thoughts: Replaced a ^&$%&* Linksys router with this router. Couldn't be happier. We use it with four wired computers and two wireless access points with 4 to 8 additional wireless users. Not sure how many more users we can pile on it, but it just keeps on chugging along without skipping a beat. We use s separate gigabit switch so can't judge the LAN switching performance.

Cons: Documentation is weak.

Other Thoughts: I purchased the 3Com after reading the 5-egg ratings on here. You guys are right, thanks! It is the most reliable router I ever owned. Highly recommended!

Rating + 5 Great router

Pros: This is actually the first router i owned. I've just been connecting using my roommates router and this tops their linksys by far. Using the internet is faster than the linksys. Though i don't have a wireless card so i don't know how wireless performs on this router. As soon as i plugged it up, it worked without me having to do anything...as long as your computer was wired for cable internet in the past. Very thin and sleek. It also has slots at the back if you want to hang it on the wall.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: a very great buy. always thought linksys was fast, but this is faster.

Pros: Got this router because it would support multiple VPN IPSEC pass through sessions at the same time. Does just that and is easy to set up. Excellent product. As always NewEgg delivered in record time. Don't know how they do it, but NewEgg rocks too.

Cons: none

Rating + 5 Now this is quality

Pros: Easy setup (CD not always necessary), clear and concise instructions, comes with everything you need (power supply and short RJ45 cable). Great build quality and very reliable.

Cons: None I can think of.

Other Thoughts: I love this router.... came down to deciding between this one and a LinkSys, but picked the 3Com based on previous reviews. I'm glad I did - I never owned a router before and was worried that it would break half my Internet apps (particularly P2P as well as the online virtual world "Second Life"), but it turns out that only minimal reconfigurations were needed to my two PCs. The router? Plug it in, fire it up and it just... works. Great web interface as well, quite comprehensive and with useful context-sensitive help. Way to take away my fear of routers *and* help me get rid of my aging software firewall, 3Com! Highly recommended! :-)

Rating + 5 Incredible

Pros: I love it! Setup was simple as plugging it in(I didn't install any software). I have comcast 6Mb cable, and this router actually improved my internet speed. And of course, my connection is much more secure now, since it has lots of great security features. It even works with P2P with no configuration adjustments!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: For the price, I haven't seen one that's better.

Rating + 5 nice

Pros: Works great. Been using it for a few months, and during that time, I have not had to power it off once for a reboot (like with linksys or netgear routers) No hicups, hasnt dropped connections, etc.

Cons: A few bugs in the firmware that haven't been updated yet when doing some advanced stuff (like content filtering or remotely setting up port forwards)

Other Thoughts: For the price, It is well worth it, and beats the heck out of a cheaper consumer router....Ive been recommending this to everyone i know looking for a good router

Rating + 5 Quality Product

Pros: Very nice build quality, made my old Linksys feel like a toy. VPN support is a great bonus to have in a router at this price. Haven't had so much as a hiccup out of this thing after a week's worth of heavy use.

Cons: Router setup user interface needs some work.

Other Thoughts: The setup is not all that user-friendly and takes a little getting used to coming from a Linksys, but overall a quality product. Hopefully this thing will live up to my expectations (doing a spectacular job so far).
