Rating + 1 No client for 64-bit OSes

Pros: Seems to work fine except for VPN functionality.

Cons: VPN client does not work with 64-bit Vista. Customer service says they have no idea if a revised client will ever be available that works with 64-bit Vista. Hence, for us, this firewall has no VPN capability. Returning for refund.

Rating + 4 Works with endpoint VPNs including Cisco, SonicWALL and pfSense

Pros: Easy set up, great documentation and support at the Netgear website including a functioning web UI on line that looks and feels like the embedded web management console built in the device. Included many features like a bandwidth meter that monitors usage and can cut usage overages. Works with NETGEAR VPN01L Prosafe VPN Client Software License(s).

Cons: Doesn’t include any mobile VPN clients. It should include at least one as it would make a great package deal for home users and SOHO offices as many of my clients that have these were unaware of the additional feature the (mobile) VPN client allows for.

Pros: Easy to install.
Solid construction.
Improved WAN and LAN speed increase compared to my Netgear FVS318 router.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The Netgear FVS318 limited my internet connection speed to around 6 MB/s compared to 10 MB/s from the Netgear FVS338.

Rating + 5 solid as a router

Pros: I have a graveyard of routers that died within a couple years. I have a growing home network, for home office work. I've got it cabled to Verizon FIOS ethernet and it is solid as a rock. I used the DHCP, but not the VPN. I have about a dozen attached devices, including shared printers, Wii, and FIOS TV bridge and other switches, and Wireless access points and several PCs and wireless devices. Built slowly over the years. I configured it and forgot about it. When we got fios TV, I refused to use the MI424WR Actiontek router, and actually put it behind this router. Happy as can be. We're getting 25mpbs down and 12 mbps up consistently. Doesn't hang, lets me VPN with my own office (via their software).
I'm not a game player, just an Joe average using the net a lot, along with a family of 5.
It just sits there and runs. I have not touched it except to use it to test things when verizon added tv to our service. Don't expect verizon to know how to cable it though.

Cons: I really don't need to use vpn right now, but it's there if I need to.

Other Thoughts: chances are, when new technologies arise I'll just buy new gear, like GB ether.

Rating + 4 FVS338

Pros: - Price
- Effective firewall
- Good throughput
- Allows control of outgoing traffic and connections
- Provides bandwidth metering which is needed for Comcast
- Easy to configure

Cons: - Security logging is lacking, though a firmware update last year improved it somewhat.
- Monthly maximum for bandwidth metering is limited to 198 megabytes per month if usage is above that, limit needs to be reset. This is a business class device, I cannot believe that a device that allows 50 vpn connections would limit bandwidth usage to 198 megabytes when metering is turned on.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I would recommend this device.

Rating + 1 WORST SUPPORT EVER

Pros: Works as a fast firewall

Cons: WARNING: If you want to use this for any sort of VPN, make sure you get it working immediately. I waited until the 90 days of support had passed before I tried to set up the VPN. I wasted $58 for an updated VPN client (the one it ships with doesn't support Vista) and then I was told by very rude forum moderators to call support.

When I complained that I didn't want to pay another $75 for one phone call, this is what the forum moderator said:

"All I can do is laugh at his last post."
- adit (forum moderator) in thread 38248

Other Thoughts: They say that people go to the proprietary vendors because you're buying a supported product.

What a Lie!

I'm going to check out the free Linux VPN stuff, at least they won't laugh at me for not wanting to spend $75 for a phone call.

Rating + 5 Solid and reliable

Pros: Replaced a more expensive, buggy, and unreliable Watchguard Firebox which watchguard stopped supporting after 90 days. The Netgear is a great firewall and VPN appliance. Among the fastest VPN throuhput so it will last years. I have had it up for months with no VPN problems.

Cons: The VPN client software is tricky to setup.

Rating + 5 upgrated for fvs318

Pros: works as explained. got my full available connection speed. same size as my old fvs318 smaller and lighter power connection.

Cons: not a big deal but the user interface seems more complicated for the average user than the older fvs318. kinda through me off for a minute.

Other Thoughts: the fvs 318 was a great unit and had it for 4 years upgraded due to faster available connections with limited throughput of the fvs318 so i purchased the fvs338.instand noticable difrence. I know get an average of 19.omb down vs 4.8mp

Rating + 5 Great Netgear product

Pros: It has all of the features I was looking for in a router. I mainly bought it for the vpn. It works with a windows active directory environment. I originally bought two FVS318 devices. I was having difficulty running group policy through there for some reason. I had to return the FVS318 devices. So I bought three FVS338 devices and no problems.

Cons: It can be difficult to set up the vpn for the average pc user. I guess if you know what your doing, that's not a con.

Other Thoughts: Buy it! It is a great solution to create VPNs.

Rating + 5 Solid VPN Tunnel

Pros: Easy setup for the vpn. 100% uptime since installation 6 months ago.

Cons: none yet.

Other Thoughts: I have 7 of these at different locations for a client of mine. They are all linked with a VPN tunnel that was easily configured with the included VPN wizard. The router maintains the VPN tunnels like a champ with zero downtime thus far. Using the VPN network to transmit employee fingerprint logins via a network fingerprint scanner that clocks employees into the server via the VPN tunnel. Highly recommend this product if you need simple, easy VPN. I have tried other similar products from Linksys, etc. with no such luck.

Rating + 5 Very Good Upgrade

Pros: Very simple setup. I simply hooked everything up, followed the power up instructions (cable modem, FVS338, then computer), and I was online again within less than one minute. All I did afterwords was to go in and tweak the settings for my particular setup. Flawless. Been running 24/7 since purchase. Expecting same reliability as before (see other thoughts). Throughput matches the speed for which I subscribe from my broadband provider.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Impressed with Netgear reliability. Upgraded from a 7 year old Netgear RT311 that has been working 24/7 all that time with no problems. Only upgraded to be ready for more throughput from broadband provider.

Rating + 5 Best Netgear Router I've Owned

Pros: This firewall went to work as expected. Worked right out of the box and gave me the performance I wanted. High speed WAN (>10Mbps) not slowed by FVS338. So file transfers are quicker and after work, games suffer no lag.

Cons: No major cons yet.
No DMZ interface, since it is mainly for business use.

Other Thoughts: I needed a simple to use, Firewall that could support VPN tunneling (home to office). Really impressed how simple Netgear devices are to configure.

Rating + 3 Be Careful

Pros: this does a great job in key word filtering, and setting WAN access times, and managing users

Cons: when key work filter is on, thru put speed can drop to 30k. if in heavy usage, then all the filters, setting, and management gets shut off as the firmware will need to be reloaded. Also, having problems setting up a DMZ address as there doesn't seem to be a straight forward way to do this.

Other Thoughts: I'd like to find something a little more robust that doesn't slow down this bad during key word blocking and i won't have to worry about the f/w becoming disbled during heavy usage....

Pros: Web content blocking (java applets, active x, proxys)
SPI, IDS, extensive logging, loads of configeration options. outbound and inbound service blocking feautres.

Cons: For the price level it is is at none. it used to come with trend micro virus protection but it was removed probebly for good reasons.

Other Thoughts: Full thoughput for my 10mbps broadband. To configure this you would need a basic knowledge of networking and ports and internet connectivity. I suggest netgear web site and download the full reference manual for this product it is not included in the box or cd.

Rating + 1 DOA

Pros: it arrived on time

Cons: could not login to config page.
test light stayed on

Other Thoughts: figuring out netgear tech support was a trick. This is considered a business product so dont waste your time waiting on hold with the home support folks. At the time of this writing it is 1-888-NETGEAR then option 4 (tech support) option 5 (all other products) then option 2 (business)
Once I reached the correct tech support the support guy was polite, helpful, and spoke perfect english. He confirmed it was DOA and recommended I RMA through Newegg stating that Newegg was faster then they were. I think that speaks well for Newegg. Once I get a working unit, I will write another review based on actual unit performance.

Rating + 5 Works as stated

Pros: I just had Comcast hook up a new DOCSIS 3 high speed cable line (50mbps down, 10mbps up). I wasn't getting full speed on my 3 year old router (less than half). I installed this Netgear firewall / router and now it get what I'm paying Comcast for.

Cons: Only 10/100, not gigabit.

Other Thoughts: I don't care about the 10/100 speed, since the whole house in on gigabit switches and seperate wireless APs.
Keep in mind that the web interface is very technically oriented and not intuitive at all. I'm a systems admin, so I'm often dealing with unusual web interfaces for network devices. Basic setup is easy, but port forwarding or setting up web filters can be more complex for those not familiar with it. Overall, a great product.

Pros: I puchased the Netgear FVS338, a Netgear WG302, and a Netgear GS116 gigabit switch. Everything was installed in January (it’s Oct now). I have 4 ports in the living room with PS3, Xbox360, Wii, and MediaCenter PC. I have 4 Ports in the office with a Home Server, 2 Client Machines, and a network printer. The remaining ports were wired up to bedrooms which also have additional client computers, and we have 2 laptops connected to the network as well. After receiving all the netgear equipment I immediately upgraded all the firmware. The router was very easy to install and configure. The WAP was somewhat confusing at first, but I did have it up and running with wpa protection in about ½ hour. I am an absolute media hog. The traffic counter built into the router has been essential in helping us stay below the 250gb Comcast monthly limit. We constantly stream massive 8GB media files from the home server to all the other client machines and even mobile phones. All I can say is ROCK SOLID

Cons: None. This network has never gone down once on it's own. We did lose power 2x in storms. But that was never netgears fault.

Other Thoughts: In addition to netgear taking credit for the reliability of this home network, The home was stripped of all old coax and replaced with RG6. An upstream and downstream amplifier was attached to Comcasts line from the pole to ensure perfect signal quality on all 8 coax lines in the house. One of which is the cable modem line. This network handles everything we throw at it. I started this project to build the ultimate media connected home and I am very pleased to say the least.

Pros: Replaced FVS318 for more throughput for online gaming. Working fine, no more disconnects. Probably more options than I will ever need for small network. Had to have MAC spoofing.

Rating + 5 Fast Enough for FIOS 20k/5k

Pros: When our small business upgraded to FIOS from DSL, we found that we were not getting the full 20000 down, 5000 up that we were paying for. We traced the problem to the Netgear FVS318 firewall/router we were using. The FVS318 could only handle about 9000 down and 4500 up. After adding the FVS338, we are getting our full FIOS speeds. Also, compared to other business-class firewall/routers (i.e. Cisco) this box is a bargain.

Cons: Why is it that every manufacture comes up with their own way to configure their firewall/router. They use different words for the same concept. I thought configuring the FVS338 would be similiar to the FVS318. But NOOOO, the configuration of the two is very different even though they are from the SAME manufacturer. So, configuring this box required a lot of trial-and-error before I could get everything to work like it did with the FVS314.

Other Thoughts: After adding the FVS338, we could not get new IP and DNS address's from FIOS. Tried disconnecting the battery and unplugging the FIOS box, but it didn't work. (Works with cable and dsl.) After finally getting through to Verizon support, they told me they have to break the IP lease from their end. When I complained about the long wait time to get to a human, they finally told me that the local IP address of the FIOS box was 192.168.1.1. And if I connected a laptop directly to the FIOS box, I could browse to that address and get to a configuration page where I could break the lease on my side. I didn't try it because they had already reset the internet IP address by the time they told me. Just thought I'd pass this information on so it might help the next guy.

Rating + 5 Good VPN Firewall

Pros: Perfect VPN Firewall for a small business that needs a fast stable simple to setup VPN - if you use it connected to two or more of the same Firewalls. Not so if you want to connect to a Cisco Firewall. If you are going to connect to a Cisco buy the 100.00 Netgear vip support package and have them take you through the setup or you will never figure it out unless you are a geru at networking. Great network speed for a low cost VPN Firewall.

Cons: You have to upgrade the bios before you start out or you will have problems. Also when you change the LAN you will have to simply unplug the power cord and reboot. May have to reboot it a couple of times but it does come back correct.

Other Thoughts: Can not beat it for cost and performance. I have used 8 of these now for 3 different businesses. For one business I replaced a 3 year old mixed equipment setup and they tell me their network is much faster and very stable. There not Cisco but their not 1200.00 or more either. All you need for a smaller business that is concerned about budget.

Rating + 5 A huge leap forward !!

Pros: Increases already high-speeds higher. Was on Fios 15/2 plan and averaged 12-13mbps with Netgear FVS124g (not a shabby router) ... upgraded to FVS338 for more processing power and better firewall performance and my speed tests go consistently are at 15mbps. My download speeds too now top 1.7mbps from some download sites, up from 900kb-1.1mbps from the same site with old router. Even if you get highspeeds, this will bump it up so you are maxing out your speeds. Also the inclusion of the Netgear VPN client is a plus.

Cons: No gigabit ports, but with other switches in my house being 100mb, not worried too much. With the added performance from old router, the con is minor.

Rating + 5 Amazing value, but upgrade the firmware

Pros: Fantastic business-class router, packed with features and speed. It easily handles a 32d/3u Mbit broadband connection, and the VPN speed is incredible. I was blown away by the VPN speed, which is 2-3x faster than the FVS318 this model replaced, and just a hair under the maximum broadband speed (almost no speed penalty). The setup menus have gotten better with each revision of the Netgear routers, and the FVS338 has the best ones yet. I had all my VPN tunnels, firewall settings, and broadband settings done in minutes. And on top of everything it's ridiculously cheap.

Cons: You *MUST* upgrade the firmware; don't even think about using an old one. You can find them at http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/FVS338.asp and the latest one as of now, 3.0.3-13, is way better than the stock v2 firmware. Also, a gigabit switch would've been nice. I see some people complaining about reliability, but in years of using Netgear routers, including recently two of these, they have always been solid.

Other Thoughts: The perfect router for a small business that has a high speed broadband connection and needs VPN functionality.

Pros: Not a bad price for a 8 port gigabit switch with VPN router. Solid metal casing. Easy configuration with a ton of features.

Cons: Only worked for an hour. Came with a cheap power supply, and although the power supply still works but the unit does not, the cheap power supply could certainly be to blame.

Other Thoughts: Murphy's law...I had this thing overnighted and needed it immediatly for a rush job. Naturally it dies at 6:00pm when it's needed at 7:00am the next day. I was forced to go buy a less capable product at a B&M store, and I'm out the cost of shipping.

Rating + 5 Excellent

Pros: Works great!! Replaced a nearly 4 year old Netgear FVS318 router with this version. The FVS318 operated absolutely flawlessly always; the FVS338 should do likewise based on our Netgear experience.

Cons: The setup info could be a little better. Example, the setup guide says to use auto settings for DHCP and DNS services. This is not true when using static IPs. Also, and this was my oversite, you must remember to change all static IPs (if you're using statics) to match the new router (192.168.1.1). An easy thing to overlook when you're in a rush. It would have been nice to have reminder, just in case....

Other Thoughts: We use only Netgear Wireless cards in about half of the 17 systems on our network; plus a Netgear router. We have never had a failure of a single piece of Netgear equipment ever in all this time. And, NO, I don't work for Netgear. We just could not ask for better performance.

Pros: Easy to use web GUI. I pluged in all the settings and I was up and running in about 10 min. Easy.

Cons: Only one broadband WAN. Haven't had it long enough to know if it will last.

Other Thoughts: This unit is a vast improvement over the FVS124G it replaced. I no longer have lost/broken DHCP client issues. The WAN is incredible. I knew that the old firewall was limited to 10MB WAN but I had no idea I was being delivered 37MB+ by my provider. I literally tripled my WAN access speeds. I have only one VPN client connection, works fine, but I may ditch in favor of SSL. Well worth the upgrade. Now if it will just last.......

Rating + 4 Just what I needed!!!

Pros: Worked right out of the box. As an IT professional I was skeptical about this product due to mixed reviews. I must say I am very impressed with how it has performed so far. I have owned it for just about 6 months and I have never had to reboot it, it has never dropped its connection, and I have had no issues with the VPN connection or implementing the wireless access point either. For the price this thing holds up just as well as cisco and intel.

Cons: None to this point. Maybe some of the configuration features, but nothing to get real bent about.

Other Thoughts: This is not a high end router and no it will not be able to handle high end corporate networks. But for home and small business networking, this router is everything you need. It won't disappoint.

Rating + 5 Serious Routing

Pros: For its class, this offers features you would have to pay more than $1000 for anywhere else. It has also had a development curve, within a year they went from version 1.0 firmware to 3.x- probably about 20 revisions. So I finally upgraded to 3x firmware and WOW- much enhancement and performance increase. It has Great VPN functionality too.

Cons: Read below- nerds, as the fish through every switch in the ROM, will find all the problems. The general "can't hold an internet connection" problem reported is most likely due to sub-standard internet connectivity downstream- as long as you have a proper connection, this does great. Getting to a proper conneciton may be your challenge! UPgrade the firmware the moment you get it.

Other Thoughts: This router is great for a medium-high end product, but falls short when you get into natting, subnatting, tri-natting and all the other real "fancy" stuff higher end routers do. Also, it cannot specify multiple destination subnets in VPN connections, which effects some large WAN networks. Basically, if this router doesn' tdo it for you, you need to pony up and shell out $1000 or more for a cisco-like unit.

Rating + 1 Very Poor!

Pros: Specifications are great! The look and feal of the equipment matches the price and the ProSafe name.

Cons: Unstable router! Connected to cable modem and could access the internet. The connection would last only a few minutes before it could no longer see the internet (couldn't ping anything on the WAN side (192.168.100.1). It reported an active WAN DHCP lease and would not function correctly until recycling the power. I repeated this many times. I even tried cloning the MAC to match the properly operating router!

Tried making the WAN IP, gateway & DNS static and connecting into another network. Could not get this configuration to work at all. Again, couldn't ping anything on the WAN port . . . Traded the router out with a diferent brand router and had full success.

Other Thoughts: The specifications are a big step above other gateway routers (reason for my purchase). The price reflects this and the name strongly suggest this product is usable for professional applications. However, this product appears to be of only consumer grade!

Rating + 4 Good router, tricky software

Pros: Inexpensive with a lot of features, fast, generally easy to set up (see comments though), very configurable

Cons: Some omissions/bugs in the software bring this router down from a 5.

DDNS does not update when switching between WAN1 and WAN2 on the latest firmware. I still have to run TZO client software on my LAN. Not a dealbreaker, but frustrating.

Other Thoughts: I've had this router running for about 3 days. I enjoyed seeing Comcast Powerboost for the first time due to the 10/100 WAN port.

I updated to the latest firmware as of Feb 1, 2008, and none of the documentation on the web site really correspond to the updated firmware. The materials linked from the box itself into Netgear's web site are closest, but not exact. A few things I've noted:

1. DDNS does not update when you go to dialup auto-rollover on the latest firmware.

2. You can't enter call-wait-blocking codes in the dial strings (it only accepts numbers). The workaround is to copy the full dial string from a text file (like *70,,nnn-nnnn) and paste it into the box. Silly Netgear...

3. When allowing inbound services through WAN1 and WAN2, you either have to create an entry for each interface, or set the IP to 0.0.0.0 (undocumented feature), which allows incoming traffic on both WAN interfaces.

Rating + 5 Netgear FVS338 - Worth the money!

Pros: High bandwith WAN - LAN
Dial-up backup
VPN

Cons: Clarity of user interface could be better. Some commn setup options like port forwarding are somewhat burried and not appropriately titled.

Other Thoughts: Worth the money if your ISP offers high speeds up and down. Excellent bandwith even with latest firmware (3.0.2-21). Previous versions limited down speed.

Rating + 5 Best Netgear Router I've ever owned.

Pros: Unlike most Netgear routers, it didn't freeze or brick even under high load. It immediately improved throughput to internet over the FVS124G I replaced. Firmware upgrade was easy. The UI is is an improvement over the FVS124G and FVS318.

Cons: So far, none.

Other Thoughts: This is a great router if you have a gigabit infrastructure in your LAN environment. I have two, one for WAN and one for LAN access. These have been running for 25 days without a break-- Netgear guys know that's good for these normally stink-o products.

Rating + 4 Move your business forward !

Pros: Cost, Ease of setup

Cons: none that we can see !

Other Thoughts: This device has quite simply met our expectations. I needed a simple to use, Firewall device that could support VPN tunnelling. These days security is key !

With not having the luxury of a dedicated IT Department it often falls to me to setup new equipment.

Having outgrown our previous non-netgear hardware due to business growth we wanted to provide secure access to the email and file servers for our sales reps.

We chose this device based on cost, bundled VPN clients and reading on the internet how simple Netgear devices are to configure.

Out of the box this was a simple job, from configuring the device to replace the old firewall to setting up the VPN tunnels on the FVS338 and in the Netgear VPN client.

Within a couple of hours we had moved our business forward !

Rating + 4 Netgear FVS338 VPN Router

Pros: 50 VPN tunnels, 8 Port Switch, fully configurable firewall; Supports ProSafe Remote Access Client, Supports SNMP, Supports NAT and Classical routing. The FVS338 Can be easily programmed to block access to certain Websites. The router is reasonably priced

Cons: Dial backup requires an external modem, no full DMZ LAN interface, not directly rack mountable, Transformer power cord.

Other Thoughts: The FVS338 is a full feature SMB Router. Initial network set up of the FVS338 was easy. Netgear has revised the GUI interface on their latest firmware releases. I loaded the latest firmware from the Netgear website which also was fairly easy. The VPN configuration allows the same IKE policy to be re-used when making multiple IPsec session connections to the same endpoint. VPN connections allow the use of Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDN) instead of IP addresses for the VPN endpoints. This is useful when your ISP frequently changes your IP address. The Dyndns feature will automatically update the IP address when it changes. The configurable secure Remote Management can be set up to allow access only from defined machines or networks on a specified port. From a price vs. feature perspective I would recommend this unit.

Rating + 4 This is SMB, not consumer

Pros: If you have a need to get granular on your firewall security and to setup VPN tunnels, then this is the firewall that will give you the most bang for the buck. Use the Wizards and you will be fine. Dump the wizards when you need to get granular in the programming.

Cons: Besides the firmware issues, for the business segment it is in, I can not think of any.

Other Thoughts: Intergrating UTM would be nice, although will add significantly to the cost.

Rating + 4 Works, after a fashion

Pros: It works as advertised. 10Mbps+ speeds on WAN port and the VPN works (in my case with an older NetGear FVS318v1). Only note, I concur with other poster that 2.1.0.7 is the firmware to go with as the latest cripples the WAN port to 6M speeds. Stay with 2.1.0.7 unless you don't have HSI that exceeds 6M down.

Cons: Documentation doesn't match firmware versions. Horrible documentation that doesn't do a good job explaining the advanced features and options for what to pick to get things working. Also, the Help in the configurator is just as poor.

Other Thoughts: Buy it, it works, with the 2.1.0.7 firmware (so far zero issues). But beware, you must be very well versed with networking if you attempt the more advanced features. And if you don't need the advanced features, buy something else that's less technical.

Rating + 4 Very good with the right firmware

Pros: With the right firmware, it is stable and fast. The latest firmware (2.1.2-7) limits the WAN to LAN speed to 6 Mbps. This has been confirmed by a number of users in the Netgear VPN Router forum (closed to outsiders unfortunately). So stay with the 2.1.0-7 firmware for the moment if speed is a problem for you. The rumor is that a new firmware 2.1.2-11 will be out shortly and will solve this problem.

Cons: Does not have UPNP, probably for security reasons, so is not really a consumer item. Also, has a long (2 minute) test period during boot-up, which again is longer than most consumer routers. And the large number of options will appeal to power users more than the average user, though the defaults worked OK for me.

Other Thoughts: It is more suited to home office/professional use than for the average consumer, though setup is not a problem if you leave everything at default.

Rating + 5 Great Product!

Pros: Since the D-Link DFL-700 has been discontinued and the DFL-210 can’t be found in stock anywhere we opted to go with this router for a satellite office that we opened last minute. Although I had my doubts (based on past experience with Netgear) I must say we’re extremely pleased with this router. Setting up secure VPN tunnels is a breeze, and throughput on those tunnels is exceptionally good. We have 6 IP phones, 6 workstations, and one printer behind this unit and so far everything’s working better than expected.

Cons: Although this product is robust, its feature set is not as robust as D-Link’s DFL series’ routers. Still, I can definitely see us using these routers as an alternative in the future. Not really a con, per say.

Other Thoughts: Update to the latest firmware (2.1.2-7) as soon as you get the router up and running!

Rating + 5 Worked out of the box

Pros: This may be overkill for a home network, but i got this router to allow multiple outgoing VPN tunnels, and it works! Didn't require any tweaking or changes to the router to get working.

Cons: The admin interface has a lot of options, but it work's so i haven't bothered to learn what all I can do.

Other Thoughts: Came with 2.1.0-7 firmware, upgraded to 2.1.2-7. No issues with the update rock stable. Haven't tested with P2P, but assume it will handle high load better than a cheap best buy router.

Rating + 5 Excellent Firewall

Pros: ICSA Certified.
VPN Client software included.
Metal chassis with mounting screw holes.
253 LAN users
I have not had to reset it in the 7 months I have owned it.
I got my rebate check!

Cons: None yet...

Other Thoughts: This is a great value. ICSA certification, VPN support and VPN client software come at a much higher cost from other manufacturers.
FYI: I have Verizon FIOS static IP with 15Mbps/2Mbps service. My download tests on XP/Vista/2003 systems average 15.2Mbps/1.8Mbps. The high-throughput works as advertised. I did not need to tweak anything on the firewall.

Rating + 4 So far so good

Pros: Plenty of connections for my home use. (I only need 2.) FVS338 has enough features for a networking novice (such as myself) to get up and running without the need for any documentation. Router came with 2.0.0.x firmware but I upgraded it to 2.0.0.141. No problems there. So far this router has not dropped DHCP connections for me like the FSV114 did; but it's only been a week.

Cons: The documentation is online and was not much help. It may be on the disk that came with it, I don't know. I took a quick look at the disk and it appears to be software for setting up your VPN. At the moment I have no use for it as I'm not using VPN.

Other Thoughts: This router (so far) appears to have helped solve my dropped DHCP problem but has not solved my throughput problems. With it being rated at up to 90 Mbps for WAN-to-LAN I was expecting a significant boost in my download speeds. I have 2 systems (Vista Ultimate 64 on one and Windows X64 on the other) and both max out at 6 Mbps during downloads; my connection is 16 Mbps. I've reconfigured both systems using TCPOptimizer but no luck. It could be that the OSs are still causing the problem, not the router. I gave this firewall (router, whatever) 4 stars because it is (so far) just that, good.

Pros: Nice web interface, good price for the 90 Mbps WAN-to-LAN speed.

Cons: Drops the WAN connection up to once a day and it doesn't come back up. Perhaps, this would be ok if your not running web-servers, email, and other services through the firewall. However, we are hosting services through the firewall and it keeps going down every few days.

Rating + 4 Decent Firewall for the Price

Pros: Bang for the buck.. Not bad
Once Firmware is upgrade to 2.x Works pretty good!
Cool Quality of service feature built-in for prioritizing services like ssl, ssh, http, etc.

Cons: * Must upgrade the firmware to at least 2.x to get the best out of this hardware.
* The VPN may have a habit of dropping site to site links if there is little or no activity.
* netgear support is limited.

Other Thoughts: My unit came with firmware 1.74 and it was a pain to manage and the VPN seemed somewhat flaky. Since VPN is one of the main reasons I purchased this unit, I was very determined to make it work with our other Sonic Wall Tz 170. I got the 2.x image and this interface is far better than the old netgear OS. The netgear website also states some of the drawbacks to upgrading to the 2.x version. One thing to consider is that if you have an existing netgear firewalls/vpn units, they may all need to be upgraded to work together. Please read the current info on the netgear site for details.

Rating + 4 Netgear FVS338 Firewall Router

Pros: great firewall and networking router. provides good protection.

Cons: not always intuitive to set up. Tech support stinks online. My 15MB/s thruput drops down to 100 kB/s when keyword blocking is enabled.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this for the firewall protection and the ability to schedule access times for certain users who waste time playing games.

Rating + 5 Great

Pros: I was afraid to buy the FVS338 after reading some of the reviews. However I've deployed two of these and both have operated flawlessly. One of them is running firmware 1.6x and one is running v2.0. Neither has ever needed a reboot after several months of continuous 24/7 operation.

It acts as a fast NAT/Firewall/VPN/Switch protecting a Win2003 Server and Win2K server.

Called tech support twice during setup. Both calls had short hold times, pretty good english, and good, accurate assistance.

Cons: The v2 firmware User Interface is a sharp departure from other Netgear products. It would have been better to stay consistent.

The 1.x configuration data can't be imported by the 2.0 firmware, so you have to reenter the config by hand after upgrading. If you have a new one, be sure to upgrade firmware before spending time on the config.

Other Thoughts: We have used only Netgear products and will probably continue to do so. The only problem we've ever had with Netgear was a bad fan (got loud but still worked fine) on a 4.5 year old switch. Netgear replaced it under (5yr!) warranty at no charge.

Rating + 5 Nice firewall - comparable to Cisco

Pros: This is an excellent firewall for the price. Rulesets are very customizeable, SYSLOG, SNMP, multiple LAN configurations, traffic meter logging, many, many features. I would buy this over a PIX 501 anyday for a small office. Maintenace cost is also very low - 3 years, NBD replacement if need be. I'm using this in a site to site VPN, and client VPN simultaneously. It works flawless. You must upgrade to the latest 2.0 code for best results. This is a true firewall - and can send detailed log reports.

Cons: None - even ProSupport is very helpful.

Rating + 5 Complaints fixed in firmware v2.0

Pros: Fast, reliable, configurable -- a huge improvement over the cheap toy "router" that this is replacing for me. I appreciate the fine level of control I can exert from the web interface. Port forwarding works flawlessly (a big problem with many of the very inexpensive models on the market).

Cons: v1.x firmware has all the problems described in the negative reviews below. You must upgrade the firmware after buying the product.

Other Thoughts: It's unfortunate that Netgear decided to ship this product with such buggy firmware. With v1.46 that the device shipped with it crashed within the first few hours of use with traffic only on the LAN side. Pitiful. However, the problems have been addressed in v2.0 and this is now a viable product for the home/small business user.

Pros: Perhaps speed and that’s all.

Cons: Product is not as is advertised. Where are the thouted DMZ settings? Half of the features not working, port forwarding anyone. Remote management dies in 10 min. 7 firmware updates on the website - common their never gona fix it. No wonder they giving you a rebate. Read other user reviews carefully before deciding to buy this cr*py "business firewall". Your business will be down for long time...

Other Thoughts: For business needs go with the Zyxell ZyWALL 2 Plus for the same price. You'll never look back...

Rating + 1 Praise Newegg

Pros: Newegg's product return policy! I've returned the product for refund.

Cons: Continued follow up with Netgear support (I ended up logging 6 service requests with Netgear) has verified that 3 basic firewall features as described in the product's online datasheet and current manual are either not available or not functioning properly. And, firmware to follow in version 2.0 is to have furhter product features removed. Buying this product based upon its datasheet and manual was misleading.

After 7+ firmware revisions, I was very surprise that some of the basic firewall features were still not functioning properly. For prior Netgear products I've owned, this certainly wasn't the case. For what is being sold as a business class product, I'm really surprised that Netgear is selling it in this state.

Rating + 1 Not Ready Yet

Pros: As noted by others, speed. I like they way they have implemented QoS on an per-service basis.

Cons: All features in product not working. I turned on keyword blocking, and my speed came to a halt. My 16 Mbps connection, slowed to ~ 300 kbps. Turn off keyword block, right back to 16 Mbps. Netgear support knows of the problem, and provided a beta firmware. Keyword blocking in beta only uses first 3 letters of keyword ... so far more is blocked than intended. So, again keyword blocking has to be turned off.

Going through all the firmware release notes, they keep saying the keyword blocking is fixed, it OBVIOUSLY is not. I cannot believe they have been able to release this product without having better tested the feature set.

As noted by others, DMZ is in manual, but not in product. Netgear support says DMZ can be setup manually by setting the services yourself. Yeah, I guess so, but the product description clearly lists this as a feature ... but, obviously it is not!

Other Thoughts: Came with 1.6.47 FW, updated to .48. Their beta 2 firmware looks promising, as they have completely updated the interface, I like the layout of the beta 2 firmware much better.

Those that gave this great reviews just based on speed I'm guessing didn't fully check all the product's security or features ... they just liked that it was fast.

Netgear user/support forum is gone. If you are looking to get help, your only contact is Netgear support. Or, you can find some other public forums.

Netgear support is responsive, but at times very poor. Difficult to understand english, they don't aways seems to read or understand what you've posted in your question.

This is the 3rd Netgear product I've owned, the first two worked as described and I never had a problem. This one is not living up to its online datahseet or user manual!

Given the issues I had with general product features, I never even got to working the VPN connections.

Rating + 5 Great Performance

Pros: This firewall came in as expected. Worked right out of the box and gave me the performance I expected. I was using Netscreen but that was to slow for the 15Mb / Sec Broadband Service I have now. After doing speed tests I'm seeing a little over 14Mb / Sec which is more than I expected. Set up was easy and I've had no problems whatsoever since hooking it up well over a month ago. Can't wait to get FIOS which should be soon!

Cons: None really if you want to get picky maybe that it isn't rack mountable and that it uses an external power supply but that doesn't take away from the performance of this beauty.

Other Thoughts: You don't need to be technical to set this up unless you need to get deep in to VPN Setup. Otherwise it really is plug and play. Pick this guy up you won't be disappointed.

Pros: Excellent router. You get what you pay for. Router is fast and supports full speed FiOS connections. Unlike the FVG318 vpn on this works and does not limit you to 3Mb/s connection speeds. HW based processing of VPN helps to.

Cons: The web interface has a few bugs, namely in the host/groups section. etgear is aware and trying to fix them. A new FW is "around the corner."

Other Thoughts: This is a router aimed at SOHO/SMB market and not really for people to connect their "gee whiz xbox" to their "prebuilt Dell". As such there is more involved to setting it up then say a MR814. Would not recommend for your everyday run of the mill home user (99.999% of the population out there).

Pros: High Throughput...

Cons: Buggy Firmware...
Choose whether you want, the lan to be disconnected randomly or the router to disconnect from the wan randomly. Either way you have to reboot the router. You would think it would have been fixed by the seventh firmware revision.

Pooooor Customer service at Netgear. Their solution is wait for the next firmware...

Apparenly the VPN does not play nice with non-Netgear Routers. According to the Netgear User Forums.

No DMZ...The box and the Manual both mention a DMZ but there is no option in the on the web interface. I have tried every version of currently available firmware.

If you need more evidence visit the Netgear Support User Forums...

Other Thoughts: I don't write reviews for products I buy, because they do what they are supposed to do, but the poooor customer service at Netgear and the lack of updates or even communication by Netgear when the problems will be fixed.

Has forced me to warn my family and friends to stay away from Netgear products, and so I warn you stay away from this product.

As far as what you should buy ZyXEL, SonicWALL, and Cisco(Linksys) seem like pretty safe bets but check the user forums first. I wish I did.....

The only good thing about the whole business is the great price I got on it at Newegg and the quickness of the delivery by UPS. (Thanks)

Pros: Only VPN router I found that supports 30mbps/5mbps Verizon FiOS at full speed. Other VPN routers cannot get more than 10mbps.

Cons: Still has some quirks in the firmware (like problems rearranging the Firewall Rules and VPN using dyanmic DNS endpoints); but Netgear is working with me to get them fixed in future firmware releases.

Other Thoughts: NOTE: the Netgear FVS318 (and other routers) cannot fully support a 30mbps WAN connection; most of them only have 10mbps throughput
