Big disappointment
Pros: Reasonable price. Metal casing. Connections in back of unit.
Cons: Like others have said unit works fine for a while (typically around a year) then anything connected to it starts experiencing connection issues (slow connections, dropped connections).
Other Thoughts: Bought several of these units to help expand network connections in offices and conference rooms. All of these units have failed in less than a year. As soon as someone starts complaining about their network connections and they have one of these switches we don't even troubleshoot the problem we just swap it out with a netgear switch and the problem is solved.

Another burned out unit
Pros: Worked well while it lasted.
Cons: Began failing after less than a year of ownership. Dropped connections, etc.
Other Thoughts: Not a good value.

Gives Cisco a Bad Name
Pros: Cheap, Cisco Branding
Cons: Got what I paid for, but not what the Cisco brand was known for.
This worked great at first. Then just like many other reviews it eventually works only poorly if at all. I have eliminated the possibility that the problem is anything else, but the switch.
Then reading on line it appears that I am not alone.
My next switch will not have the Cisco or Lynksys branding on it.
Other Thoughts: I will not longer associate Cisco with High Quality all the time. I bought this because of the Cisco brand on it, and it's reasonable prices. Big mistake.

Good little Switch
Pros: Plugged it up threw it in a dark hole in the wall, never seen it again or needed to touch it.
Cons: would be nice if it had IOS to do VLAN of course what can you expect for this price
Other Thoughts: It's doing everything I need it to do thumbs up

Faulty switch
Pros: When working - working well
Cons: 2 ports from 8 just stopped working after about 6 months. No replacement at Cisco. Need all 8 ports for home network. For media and movie streaming need more than 100Mbps - So need to replace the whole thing in case of 2 ports fault.

Mixed Reviews, but it's been good for me.
Pros: Cheap and good looking gigabit switch with small foot print. I've used a couple of these without problems for several months. I am using the relatively new v3 edition. It's fanless and silent. It now also supposedly supports jumbo frames, but finding that info is hard online.
Cons: Model SD2008 has a history of failures although the new version (v3) appears to be quiet and more reliable. I think they should have changed the name instead of keeping the stigma associated with the SD2008 name.
Other Thoughts: I found this comment on a board "Signifiant changes have occurred over the life of this switch. Version 1 had an internal fan and was quite noisy, albeit cool running. Version 2 & 2.1 eliminated the fan. However capacitor C251, sitting next to an internal heatsink is prone to failure after 6 - 8 months, resulting in dropped packets and link connections. Version 3.0 has solved this problem with a complete re-layout of the printed circuit board (PCB), with a redesign of the power/voltage regulation."

Never worked out of the box!
Pros: Great to have 8 high speed ports.
Cons: Linksys has a technological failure and should recall all these faulty switches.
Other Thoughts: Linksys should offer free replacements, no questioned asked.

Stay away - buy something else
Pros: Small, good price, good coaster
Cons: Stopped working after 1 year, now half of the 8 gigabit ports work at 100Mbit or 10Mbit.
Other Thoughts: When I bought this from Newegg, there were no bad reviews. After the switch died on me and did some research..everyone seems to have the same issues.

Don't waste your money
Pros: It worked flawlessly (for 6 months); there were no poor reviews of this product on the site when originally purchased.
Cons: Short life span. Bought 2 for a SMB, first one lasted 6 months, the other 13 months.
Other Thoughts: Linksys's RMA for the one that was still under warranty was a nightmarish process; finally decided it was costing me more to sit on the phone trying to RMA, so tossed it. Used to be a bit of a fan of Linksys products; not sure if this product line was just a lemon, or something bigger is afoot. Certainly not buying Linksys anymore myself.

Disappointing
Pros: I bought mine based on price, and previous good experience with Linksys.
Cons: Mine lasted about 4 months. Very disappointing compared to the 5+ years I've gotten from all my older Linksys equipment. When it went, it caused disruption all over my network, such that that it took me 4 hours of troubleshooting to figure out what had happened. Replaced it with a NetG**r GS105 I had laying around, and presto! everything worked again.

Don't bother
Pros: Cheap
Cons: Stopped working after around 1 year. It would only pass 1-2% of packets successfully; the rest were dropped or corrupted.
Other Thoughts: Judging by similar reviews, I'd advise anyone to not be lured in by the low price and Linksys brand. This item does not reflect the former high quality associated with Linksys.

Failing Fast
Pros: Cheap, nice profile, great feature set.
Cons: We bought five of the "business class" switches for our office. Within six months, three have already failed. We used to buy Linksys all the time. Seems like since the Cisco acquisition of Linksys, quality on Linksys products has plummeted. We've also lost confidence in the brand.

Died within months piecocrap
Pros: Works at first, compact size. It is an easy way to drop eighty bucks and get zero return.
Cons: Seems to have no way to let out heat so it gets warm. Doesn't last long and errors are intermittent so you don't automatically think of the switch.
If you don't like to replace things that you just bought, this would be bad for you.
Other Thoughts: I replaced this with a model that was also 8 ports didn't even realize that the procurves came that small. Other model has lifetime warranty. You have to give at least 1 egg.

Horrible
Pros: Jumbo packet support, nice when it worked.
Cons: Yes, mine died too. I owned this switch for about 9 months and it worked pretty well for 8 of them. By the last month, I started to notice some packet loss and lag spikes. It then started randomly disconnecting and reconnecting to devices plugged into it. Now I have a version 2.2 paperweight.
Other Thoughts: I spent the extra money for the "business" series and am very disappointed. I'm currently running a few Dlink gigabit switches, Netgear 24 port gigabit switch and just replaced an SMC switch, as well as a linksys 54g router. All work great except this. I'm going to stay away from Linksys enterprise products for a good while.

SD2008 or GA-E7AUM-DS2H?
Pros: Good still working
Cons: Seems mine is gone after 11 mos. My new GA-E7AUM-DS2H motherboard (RTL 8211CL LAN chip) is unable to communicate with SD2008 at all and shows a "Short" cable problem for the certified patch cables. An Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx 1 Gbps LAN adapter for an another PC and others 100 Mbps adapters still working. I would to investigate the problem and pay attention to a bandwidth degradation.

Not worth It
Pros: Worked well in the beginning
Cons: I started to noticed various ports to stop responding and i just figured there was a faulty port. Then, I became more aware of what i was looking at. I started to slowly notice reduced network speeds on one of my ports. On 100mbs card it stop transferring at its max speed. Then it would transfer at half the max and then dip to 100kb/s. I replaced my drivers on the computer and nothing. I then did the obvious and plugged the computer into a difference switch/router port and presto. It worked. Mine is Version 2.2 so the troubles seen in v2.1 are not gone.
Simply don't buy this unless you would like a paper weight.

Cisco/Linksys SD2008
Pros: Plug and play, relatively rugged
Cons: Failed after 9 months and it is not the first time a Linksys product has failed on me. I'm starting to loose confidence in the brand in general in term of their quality.

I do not recommend this item.
Pros: The item initially worked good.
Cons: The item failed early on ... seems to be a chronic problem with this item.
Other Thoughts: Initial symptoms caused me to look for network problems that would come and go. Later in it's short life the problem became more obvious and only a power disconnect and reconnect would fix the problem and only for a short time.
I do not recommend this item.

Pros: The switch has worked well until this point
Cons: The switch died. It was like someone was connecting and disconnecting the power. Apparently there is a problem with ver 2.1 and capacitors.

SD2008s are junk
Pros: Large packet support.
Cons: Will eventually stop working.
We bought a bunch of these at work and they have started to die. We first saw intermittent packet loss, then slow connection speeds (should connect at 1GB but showed 100MB or even 10MB), then they just die. We RMAd a few but you just get another time bomb.
Insider tip: These have the Cisco sticker but Netgear product engineering and manufacturing is not yet controlled by Cisco.

Not a good switch
Pros: Mine worked fine for a while before failing
Cons: All I've owned eventually start dropping packet
Other Thoughts: I've have seen 3 of these fail. All were used at different locations and in different applications. All failed exactly the same way, they started dropping about 25% of all packets. They continue to pass traffic but your network performance is terrible until you finally identify the switch as the problem. I use a lot of other Linksys switches without any problems but these are junk.

Product overheats
Pros: It worked for about 3 months before I had to RMA it.
Cons: with my version 2.1, heating issues prevented gigabit speeds, then prevented even connecting to the network at all. I would get constant connections/disconnections until I switched to the router ports from the switch.
This is after I swapped out cables, purchased 2 new NIC cards, powered everything down and reset it all, messed with the bios and NIC settings and about everything else under the sun...
Other Thoughts: The SD2008 v3.0 may be better???

These are junk
Pros: It works as a reliable 10/100 switch for a while
Cons: Bought two in December 2007 from New Egg, one is dead as of today. Noticeably egraded speed over a couple of days and completely failed today. Other one is OK for now, but both have had trouble with mixed 100 & 1000 NICs; defaulted speeds down to 100. I'm replacing with an SMC
Other Thoughts: Linksys quality and reliability has rapidly declined after the Cisco purchase. Not worth buying them any more. Go SMC or D-link (stay away from Netgear)

Yet another blown switch
Pros: Worked great for almost a year.
Cons: Just a few days ago my network speeds dropped significantly. Many dropped packets, duplicate acks and poor transfer speeds. Dead and replaced. Thanks Linksys/Cisco.

Verified bad capacitors
Pros: Fairly good as a paper weight.
Cons: Just about everything you can imagine. This product died after less than 1 year. It ran very hot and degraded over time.
Other Thoughts: I wrote the review below on 8/18/2008. This is a follow up. I've examined the internals of the failed unit and sure enough there are 4 bad electrolytic capacitors that are bulging and likely bad. You take it apart by popping off the front and back plastic covers. On the other hand the DGS-2208 replacement switch has been great for the past month. It runs quite cool and seems to do fairly well (not ourstanding) on speeds and throughput in a mixed environment. In addition the DGS-2208 has more informative indicator lights - highly recommended.

Pros: Its work just fine no setup required, just plug and go.
Cons: It will only work just over a year then the resistors burn up for gigabit then drops to 10/100 if your lucky
Other Thoughts: wont buy another linksys product again, 2 routers dead and now 1 gigabit switch dead.

bad caps
Pros: Works great when new.
Cons: These units suffer from bad capacitors. We have a whole bunch of these at our workplace, and have been seeing the same types of problems. The root cause is that the units get hot and the electrolytic caps fail (apparently the caps are the cheap ones that suffer from the bad electrolyte problem). Pull open a bad unit and you will see for yourself all the bulging caps. Just do a google search for "linksys sd2008 capacitor problem".

Worked for about a year and quit
Pros: Gb performance while it worked
Cons: It worked great for about a year. Then, I first noted something wrong when I built a new computer and the mobo NIC would only connect at 100 Mb. Eventually, my other computers would also only connect at 100 Mb. Then they started to drop in speed to 10 Mb. The degraded performance occurred gradually over about a month. I read the comments on Newegg and others seemed to have experienced similar issues. I replaced with a Dlink and everything is back to Gb.

Same sad story
Pros: Small, fast for a while.
Cons: Died in the same way that others report. After about 8 months I started to notice random dropping of connections and lower speeds. When new it ran at 1 Gbps, then later it ran at 100 Mbps, and now it runs at 10 Mbps when it runs at all. Also started causing a huge amount of local link activity. Problems have been isolated to this switch.
Other Thoughts: This is the fan-less Version 2.1 of the switch. I read somewhere that they are now shipping Version 3 but I wouldn't trust anything from Linksys/Cisco at this point. This switch ran really hot and I suspect that the device has been internally damaged by the heat in some way. I've replaced it with another brand of switch (DGS-2208).

SD2008
Pros: Worked fine initially for several months although as others have said, it ran hot.
Cons: Slowly started dying after several months. Appeared to be working but slowly got more errors, had to slow network down to 100mbps, and eventually that didn't work. It died slowly causing many problems along the way. I threw it out and got the equivalent from DLink. It is working great.

Died, Died, Died
Pros: Cheap, worked fine for a year and a half. Was fast once upon a time.
Cons: Has gone into a mode where it will only reliably do 10 Mbps most of the time and once in a while will go at 100 Mbps. This is not what I bought the switch for. I need full 1 Gbps speed. I've tested the attached systems and cables and concluded this switch is the root cause of the problem
Other Thoughts: The model I have is the one without the fan - a newer model I think. The box runs really, really hot. Too hot to keep your hand on it. Apparently the heat has taken its toll on the box and now it has finally died.

It true - it died in less than a year
Pros: New - it was excellent for my office, its small size, having eight ports and is very quiet (no fans). It worked like a charm for about four months, but then the Con...
Cons: After 4 month of incredibly great service - the auto negotiate was the first problem I noticed with this switch. I would start seeing that my network Icon in the lower right tool bar (Windows XP) would toggle repeatedly between connected and disconnected. After testing all wiring with a tester, crimping new ends on the cables - I found nothing worked until I removed the switch. I also found that if I changed the duplex/speed setting for the hardware in XP to Forced 100 it would work with less cutting out but sometime locked up the i-explorer.
Other Thoughts: After reading that everyone else is having similar issues with this product, I would probably recommend you look for another make or model as this one seesm to live up to the feedback reports. AS I said - great item when it was new, but give it a little time and then... :{

Works fine but not forever
Pros: This product is GREAT if you throw hardware out after 3-6 months of use.
Cons: This was used for a switch for VOIP phones (3) in our office. This item worked fine for about 9 months, but then it slowly started to get intermittent connection issues. About a month ago it completely gave up and tech support has been a nightmare.
Other Thoughts: After spending hours with the techs from both the VOIP service and local data service companies I isolated my problem to this switch, then I had to walk through Linksys tech support to make sure nothing was wrong, then over to customer service to get RMA, but amazingly they lost all record of the phone call I just had with their tech. So I called tech support again but was then transferred to business support and NOW I'm finally waiting for their RMA dept.

It SEEMED to work...
Pros: It seemed to work fine up front, and it did "work" for a while. It still seems to forward packets, sometimes.
Cons: I just tracked down a recurring networking problem to this unit. I don't know whether it simply experienced a partial failure (many other reviewers' units seemed to fail after a year), but network performance seemed to get incrementally worse.
Other Thoughts: When connected to another switch, it would cause constant communication between the two--I tried two other switches and it occurred with both. Possible Ethernet negotiation failure?
In any event, my network performance dropped to nearly 33kbps--yes, as slow as a modem--until I removed this switch. I tried power-cycling it several times to attempt to resolve the problem, but the problem only went away when I replaced it with a 3Com switch.

Junk
Pros: Its small
Cons: Same as everyone else, every single one i bought died after only a few months. Computers slowed to a crawl, i had to set them to 100M/half duplex until i could replace the switch so that people could actually work.
Other Thoughts: I always bought linksys switches up till now, but this left a bad taste in my mouth

JUNK
Pros: workes ok till they dies
Cons: We bought over 10 of these. Out of 10 we bought for our company...all of them died within 1 year. I can't believe cisco and linksys put there name on this obvious junk. What a waste of money.
Other Thoughts: Cisco and Linksys should test products before selling and pull them when they don't pass at least a working standard. These should be off the market!

Pros: Easy to use. Simple plug in and you're live. No configuration needed... great for home networks. Good bandwidth, made large file transfers seem seamless.
Cons: After 8-10 months of use, the switch lost the gigabit capacity. The device does run hot, keep it in a well ventilated area. Certain ports would give intermittent connectivity.
Other Thoughts: Bought this off NewEgg for about $80... Cisco trade up program offers a rebate of $90-$100. Maybe an option worth considering.
Otherwise, return and take advantage of its warranty, or save yourself the headache and get a new switching device from a different brand

RIP
Pros: While it worked, WOW! Even though speeds don't actually hit 'GigaBit' speed, they're MUCH faster than 100-TX - Transferring files, streaming videos, file & printer sharing between 4 computers & a gigabit NAS Smoked! Small form factor, Metal Case, looked nice, front lights w/ rear ports
Cons: Slowed down to 100-Mbit after about 6 month, became increasingly unreliable, totally useless after 8 months!
Other Thoughts: Well, with a Lifetime warranty, I'll RMA it, but considering I'll just get the same type unit back, maybe updated, I'll only use it as backup in the future - I'm using a Zonet 10/100 switch right now, and although it's slow, it works! My D-Link DGS-2208 just arrived today (also from NewEgg), hopefully it will last longer - 6-10 month lifespan just isn't acceptable. I've seen reviews that say the D-Links processor doesn't have a heatsink, so I may add my own. Hmm....warranty issues vs lifespan?

died after 10 months
Pros: was good when it worked
Cons: died after about 10 months. like another reviewer, ports started randomly turning on and off and sometimes the whole thing would just start resetting over and over again. turning everything down to 100 Mbit seems to have stabilized it enough till I was able to get something to replace it.

descent switch
Pros: Works...for now. Lifetime warranty.....so if it fails....you can keep replacing it. I have version 2.1.
Cons: Made in China->questionable quality...especially for a cisco/linksys product. Counterfeits are rampant, so make sure you have a real one.....A lot of shops even sell fakes unknowingly.
Other Thoughts: Please post your version when reviewing.

Hasn't changed much
Pros: reliable, easy to use (once set up for some)
Cons: Using the installation CD and instructions ends up causing more headache, for those who are not computer savy i recommend just plugging it in and then turning it on, instead of using the instructions they offer.
Other Thoughts: I have tried most of the residential version routers for clients, and Linksys has been the most reliable to me, granted i have ran into my fair share of lemons, but it has been the most compatable with ISPs. My 2nd choice is netgear(only because i've had more problem with their hardware then linksys)

Good for 8 mos.
Pros: No problems while it lasted.
Cons: Only lasted 8 months, died slowly, ran hot.
Other Thoughts: Why the short life on these things? Like many other users, I had one of these die approx. 8 months after I bought it, perhaps a little longer. It died slowly, with ports turning on & off unpredictably and rapidly in the interim. Big disappointment.

Cons: Unit died at 8 months.

Short lifespan. Poor quality.
Pros: Small form factor. 8-ports. Rear connections made this a plus in my setup.
Cons: On the verge of failure after 8 months. Problems similar to other posted comments.
Can get very hot under high room temps.
Other Thoughts: Replacing with a different brand.

Worked great - for awhile
Pros: It's your basic unmanaged 8 port gigabit switch - it worked great from the moment I plugged it in back in August 2007, until today (we bought 2 unit actually, the first one died last week).
Cons: very short lifespan - my two lasted 7 months. After they failed, the switch would either constantly reboot itself (which was the first one from last week) or it would only negotiate down to 10mbit (this was on I*t*l gbit server adapters), then drop the connection ever couple of minutes or so.
Other Thoughts: I don't know what version other people were runniing, but I purchased two version 2.1's - apparently there's a v3 out now? I only wish this happened during Neweggs limited warranty, as their customer support is FANTASTIC.

So far so good
Pros: Super simple setup like any other unmanaged switch. Transfers are great, supports jumbo frames.
Cons: There are a lot of negative reviews and seems like this has a high failure rate around 1yr.
Other Thoughts: The unit I got has no fan. It supports jumbo frames. It just sits there and does it's job without any problems. I'm just hoping it's not going to cr@p out anytime soon.

Stay away from this switch unless you love buying new switch every 6 months or less
Pros: Fast response time.
Cons: I bought this switch in June, 07' to replace my D-Link DGS-1008D since it's not compatible with my ReadyNAS NV+ for jumbo frame. Worked fine for a few months, then it starts to restart by itself and drop all connections. Diag. with Linksys and did an RMA, and have been on the replacement unit for a few more months. It's now March 08' and it's not connecting with anything at gigabit speed anymore. Switched it out with the old D-Link and everything's working just fine. This will be the second RMA in less then one year. This is suppose to be "Business Series", no way I'm using this in any office.
Other Thoughts: Cost-cutting design resulting in an inferior, unreliable product. Wake-up Linksys. I thought I get a more robust product by going with a "Business Series" product, boy was I wrong. Feels like this is a marketing trap to sucker you into trade-up to Cisco product.

Pros: Worked as advertised and installation was straight forward.
Cons: Stopped working in less than a year.
Other Thoughts: I've had average luck with Linksys in the past. I was not impressed when this unit stopped working in under a year. I installed this in August of last year and it ceased operation at the end of February.

Worked well for 6 months
Pros: When it worked, it worked well...
Cons: After 6 months, 2 units bit it within a week of each other. Nice. As someone else said, worked just fine for the first six months, now suddenly any RTL-8169-based NICs won't negotiate above 10Mbit. Too bad taht's what all of mine are.
Other Thoughts: Sounds like a lot of folks are having the same problem. Going to try another brand.

Business-class switch? Not this one...
Pros: Worked fine for 9 months. Fanless and quiet.
Cons: Stopped working after 9 months. Linksys won't give me an RMA even though this "business-class" product has a "lifetime" warranty. 9 months is a pretty short lifetime.
Other Thoughts: I've had a love-hate relationship with Linksys for years. Some products are great, some are not. It's tough to tell which ones will be winners. But my experience with Linksys support on this item has been beyond bad. Mediocre techs, incorrect information from the techs, no response from customer service and an RMA request web site that doesn't work. Guess which way the pendulum is swinging today.

Buyer Beware
Pros: Worked wonderfully when it Worked!!Compact and cheap buy.
Cons: The thing completely stopped working after 3 month of owning it, but if you want to be technical it stopped working after two weeks when i actually integrated to my home network connecting to my lappy, ps3, xbox360, airport express, router ... (originally bought it for a lan party)
Other Thoughts: Stop complaining about the fan noise i'd think you are blessed with one since the thing was almost burning my hand when i found it to be dead. Oh the linksys customer support was horrible.

Very disappointing
Pros: Works fine for the first month or so.
Cons: I've owned three of these. The fans in all three started making a lot of noise within a couple months. The noise is annoying enough, but one unit just died after nine months. Very disappointing to get unreliable junk like this from Linksys.
Other Thoughts: Newegg carries other brands that perform at least as well, without all the fan noise, for a lot less money. I'll just say a ROSE by any other name WILL smell as sweet.

Cisco Powers the Internet???
Pros: Compact, the unit is barely wider than the eight ports (power jack is on the side). Sturdy metal chassis. Evidently I received v2, as it was silent (yes, past-tense; see below). Has the Cisco Systems logo silkscreened on the front.
Cons: Paid $xx to go back to a 10Mb Half-Duplex link. Worked just fine for the first six months, now suddenly any RTL-8169-based NICs won't negotiate above 10Mbit. (Intel Pro/1000 still works, but that's just on the server!) Plugged an old 100-BaseTX hub back in, now my link speeds have increased 20-fold (100Mb Full-Duplex). Good thing I never throw away old hardware!
Other Thoughts: I've been a Linksys-only advocate for more than ten years now. In light of this experience, combined with the observations of others here, it's time to find a new manufacturer. Bay Networks has been around forever, maybe I'll try them next.

The new version is much better
Pros: Extremely fast, auto sensing, full and half duplex, no setup required. Plug in and it works.
Cons: Other than the power connector being on side, there are no issues.
Other Thoughts: For those worried about the bad reviews, those were with the older version which had a loud fan in it. The new version, which newegg exclusively carries now, has no fan, runs cool and silently, and is very reliable.

Buyer Beware
Pros: Metal case.
Cons: Poor quality. I made the mistake of buying several of these, all of which stopped working. Yes the earlier versions were noisy. The poor workmanship is rivaled only by the ABSOLUTELY INTOLERABLE non-support of LINKSYS. Their RMA procedure is designed to make you give up, if you managed to wait on hold long enough they simply hang up on you. BUYER BEWARE, please dont buy LINKSYS products.

Works Well
Pros: Small, light, silent. Lights are large, easy to see on front. Very simple, easy to install piece of hardware. No further maintenance required.
Cons: Power cord plugs in from side, as this unit is too narrow to fit it in rear (with all 8 ports taking up the space). This could be an issue for a few people but rather trivial concern to me.
Other Thoughts: Very good buy for the price. Could be nice to have indicators beyond simple activity (such as connect speed) but I'll settle for what I got. Could have been nice if this product conformed to shape of the Linksys routers and modems, as they can be stacked, but given its tiny size that isn't much of an issue.

Pros: Small form factor, quiet, running temperature wasn't too hot.
Cons: Died after seven months of use. Linksys RMA process more excruciating than a blind dentist.
Other Thoughts: If it didn't cut out, this thing would've been perfect. For now, I'd recommend keeping a backup in the closet if you're going to depend solely on this switch.

works great
Pros: 8 ports, all auto-sensing for x-over cables, unobtrusive size
Cons: The cost per port? eh, maybe I'm just cheap. no other complaints.

sd2008 has lifetime warranty
Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing
Other Thoughts: To the reviewer below about his unit dying outside the warranty. Linksys has a limited lifetime warranty on these things and even if you have another type linksys unit with a shorter warranty, they are pretty good about fixing things anyway. Just give them a call. I think your negative review would have been better had you called them up.

New Model More Quiet But!
Pros: Silent Operation and easy to operate. Plug and Play
Cons: Not as powerful as previous noisy fan model that permitted longer LAN cable runs. Must be installed first in "star" configurations with multiple switches. Previous model had a bit more power from wall wart.
Other Thoughts: Linksys technical department could not explain why the new model will not allow standard maximum LAN cable length operation when the older model handles more than three hundred feel cable runs.

Pros: QUIET fanless COOL RUNNING zero configuration
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: This review is for one of the quiet NEWER "fanless" Linksys SD2008 (and SD2005) switches. They're AWESOME and have a LONG warranty. The negative reviews were for the OLDER fan-equipped version of this switch which is VERY loud... Actually accidentally got one of the LOUD older models from EEE BAY (misrepresented as NEWER model) and sent it back immediately because of the heat & noise it produced. NewEgg will ONLY have the new models since they turn their inventory over so quick AND they have a return policy. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Right over a year - dead
Pros: Very fast.. Keeps itself cool
Cons: I've had this thing for maybe a month past it's warranty and wouldn't you know it.. dead. I've had switches that have lasted years, but this one couldn't do it.
Other Thoughts: A year isn't a long time for a hub, c'mon linksys. Ever since cisco bought them out, I have seen a quality decrease.

Great product No fan noise with v2.1
Pros: Fast, small, silent.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: It's a great product, I was worried after reading the reviews of how noisy the fan is, but I received hardware version 2.1, and it runs silently. I don't know if noise is just a problem with the older hardware revisions or what, but I can honestly say I can't even hear the thing with all the other electronics in the house and the air conditioning turned off.
It's also VERY small, like under half the size of old 8 port netgear hub i replaced, and it even comes with a nice wall-mounting template.

Poor Support
Pros: Works great... Just plugged it in to the uplink port in my Linksys BEFSR81 router and the DHCP in the router still assigned the Private IP addresses correctly and everything worked better and faster on my network. My VOIP unit no longer cut out as before.
Cons: Dismal Support. Regional AC Adapter for Europe which outputs 17.1 VDC instead of the rated 12.0 VDC. Actually I am afraid to hook it up... I am still using the Version 1 loaner unit supplied to Linksys while I awaited delivery of my Version 2 unit. I actually did not purchase my unit from Newegg because of the new policy of Linksys to supply regional AC Adapters and I planned to use the unit in in Asia sometimes so I could not use a US unit which would come with a 110 VAC power supply. So instead I paid $ 128 instead of $ 74 that I would have paid at newegg and ended up with a Europena Power adapter designed for 230 Volt 50 Hz input which when used on my 220 Volt 60 Cycle power produces 17.1 VDC. So I am afraid to hook it up. However the Version 1.0 version they loaned me while waiting two months for delivery worked great.
Other Thoughts: The Version 1.0 is double the height of the Version 2 unit, but I think the same width and depth, and the Version 1.0 unit does have a fan, which does sound sort of like a hair dryer, but is not noticeable unless the air conditioning and computer are turned off, so it really doesn't bother me. I only noticed it after a couple of days when I turned off everything else before the power to the switch, router and cable modem. The Version 1 does come with a worldwide input capable power adapter, so no problem there. In my quest to resolve the power adapter problem for the new unit I have found Linksys tech support and sales to be totally useless. Neither of them is even aware or has any data that a Version 2 even exists. Their US tech support claims I can't use it with that voltage adapter in this country, so I am threatening them with trying to get the government to ban sales in this country but they don't seem to care. Their tech support for this country is equally useless.

fan noise
Pros: n/a
Cons: I returned a SD2008 immediately in April, 2005 because the fan noise made it unusable.
The TRENDnet TEG-S80TXE, on the other hand had no fan and was silent.
Looking at the recent reviews, perhaps Linksys has now removed the fan from this unit.

Clean, Simple, Cheap
Pros: Basically, there is only one thing you can do: Plug it in. Extremely simple, even for the grossly un-initiated. Simple, small footprint, clean and ABSOLUTELY SILENT.
Cons: Basically, there is only one thing you can do: Plug it in. It would be nice to have a little more advanced indicator lights, but I guess 'hey... for ~$xx.. I can live with this'
Other Thoughts: Just a general gripe, and NOT a ping on Linksys; but why does everyone insist on having the transformer/convertor as part of the plug??? Takes up too much space on power strips and UPS's. Would really be nice to have one somewhere inline with the power so that the actual PLUG would not hog up so much power strip real-estate.

Zero noise, simple to set up, great warranty
Pros: Lots of pluses: lifetime warranty, metal case, quiet as a mouse, runs reasonably cool. It detect my 100Gbps capable devices correctly even with long cable runs. Its plain case is better for stacking than the fancier plastic cases of some other models.
I bought this one rather than EG008W becuase of the lifetime warranty. And it's currently $4 cheaper even after factoring in the somewhat higher shipping charge.
Cons: It's not a big deal but there's no visible indication of the port speed.

Very quite unit. There is no more Fan/
Pros: The SD2008 arrived in good condition and is a very compact unit. Prior versions of this Model may have come equiped with a fan. But this version has no fan.
Neat compact and functional.
Cons: The SD2008 does not have an indicator light or any way of reporting connection speed that is the only fault I can find with it so far.
Other Thoughts: Good investment for the price. If it hold true to prior Linksys equipment I have owned it will or should provide excellent service.

Works well but slightly noisy
Pros: Works well, nice metal exterior.
Cons: Fan can be a little noisy but not enough to notice over other machines.
Other Thoughts: This is similar to its 16 port brother, only in a smaller form factor. The bigger model has an integrated power supply which would have been nice to see on this model.

Fan not only noisy but faulty
Pros: PNP, No setup
Cons: Fan got real noisy (brushy, stuck-like noise), failed and eventually toasted switch (monitor lights out) at mere two months of operation. Manufacturer replaced two failing units, 90 days later problem reocurred both replaced units failed again along with a third switch bought three months ago.
Other Thoughts: SD2008 needs to be recalled by manufacturer. Manufacturer seems to be aware of the SD2008 over-heating/faulty fan condition.

Far too loud
Pros: No special setup, works out of the box.
Cons: The fan is far too loud for any room except an unoccupied computer room or closet. It's fan is louder than three tower systems together and the frequency is annoyingly high. It is not suitable for an office area.
Other Thoughts: It's back in the box and I'm unlikely to ever use it.

Too Loud
Pros: reasonable cost, decent performance
Cons: the fan is way to loud
Other Thoughts: I use this untill I couldn't stand the fan noise, its back in the box, and until I can relocate this to another part of the house, I won't be using it again.
Even with the office door closed I could still hear the fan in the master bedroom.

Too Loud!
Comments: The switch probably works just fine, but the noise was absolutely overpowering in my home office. I just can't use it.

LOUD
Comments: Works like a champ but it just a little to loud for me. The built in fan is nice to keep it cool but just too loud. I bought a Dlink instead no fan so it is quiet just gets a little warm to touch.

Fans are way to loud!
Comments: First off...the fan is VERY VERY loud! Louder then my rackmount server which is loaded with high speed fans! When I am in my office talking on the phone people on the other end can hear the fan over the phone it is so loud. Also, there is NO indecation of link type or speed (1000/100/10/full/half) on the front of the switch. All you get is a link/activity light. Other then the noise and lack of link information it does perform well. However the noise kills the deal for me. I think going with a fanless switch is a better solution. There are many other switches (Netgear, DLink, PowerConnect) that are fanless and run silent, and have similar costs.

Comments: Fan is annoyingly loud, for a device of this size. Runs great! LAN ping times reported at <1ms! (server has a gigabit card with cat 6 cable, workstation on 100Mb uplinked switch). Used as backbone for 20+ player LAN party. In game latency in single digits. As always, newegg with lightning fast delivery.
