Rating + 5 Superb

Pros: Works great. Not a single hiccup. Highly configurable. Dual Band! Ability to control every level of security and functionality.

Cons: None to speak of.

Other Thoughts: This has been, far and away, the best router I have ever used. This is also the first router I have personally owned, seeing as each previous roommate I lived with had brought their own along. When I finally needed to get myself one, I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews before settling on the DIR-825. Needless to say, I am very, very pleased. I have dealt with the gamut of routers in the past, including a cheap Belkin N router, a buggy Netgear G router, a problematic Linksys combo modem/router, a nice Airport Express station, etc. D-Link has won my enthusiastic support, now.

Pros: Setup was easy. The firmware was already updated. Just followed the steps with no adjustments necessary. Immediately saw a huge performance gain over by previous g router. Paired it with the d-link dual band bridge with push button sync.

Cons: LED lights are somewhat bright.

Other Thoughts: I highly recommend.

Rating + 4 I like my router...its suits me

Pros: - 4 port 10/100/1000 switch, SWEET!
I've owned this model for over 6 months, and I have not yet had the unit drop a single or require a reboot. However, I did perform the firmware upgrade out of the box though. The unit handles xbox Live great... And I have no problems with laptops ever or wifi phones... BUT If your not planning on using the dual band though, don't consider this unit, your wasting $$$

Cons: The router doesn't handle multi-tasking too well... If i'm on Live or streaming its gotta be one or the other... I haven't disabled the QOS/Traffic Shaping yet... perhaps one night this week.

Other Thoughts: I chose this router for its extensive range. The unit doesn't achieve great speeds at far away distance, however my apt has narrow hallways and thick plaster walls, with doors often closed. Perhaps unit would perform better if it were centrally re-located, food for thought. But I am able to get a signal throughout the house while all the doors remain open.

Rating + 1 It just fakes you out. Doesn't meet performance standards.

Pros: Basic throughput and functionality is there. Wireless connections, internet sharing, and communication happens. It just is far far too slow for the standards.

Cons: Setup was okay as long as one does it manually; set the correct MAC address for your modem/service provider, enable the wireless and security manually etc. At first it seems to be working in all of its modes.
I first noticed a problem trying to transfer files from one PC to another. It was taking 30+ minutes to transfer 200MBytes of data, on a link that reported to be 104Mbps. Then any application I ran that required PC to PC throughput would choke.
I spent 7+ hours on the phone with technical support of D-Link. Eventually they gave up and allowed me to return the unit.
New unit arrived about a week ago and shows exactly the same poor performance.
I used iperf.exe as an independent test of troughput; on a wireless to wireless link, a wired PC to wireless transfer and a wired to wired transfer. All reported less than 1Mbps throughput rates. I used CAT 6 cables on all wired links. I tried 2.4Ghz and 5.0 Ghz wireless connections.
All throughputs stink. It just doesn't work.

Other Thoughts: It fakes you out as once configured it appears that you have connectivity. There's no way this is an effective router.

Rating + 5 No issues so far

Pros: I had to replace my old Trendnet router (A+G Dual Band) as it was not getting recognized by new HP Pavilion laptop.

There are 2 machines on G Band (on WEP) and 1 on A (on WPA2) hooked with this new router.

Never required to apply a hard reset ever since it was brought.

No issues so far.

Cons: Default DHCP lease address in config is 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199

If you try to change this to something like 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.199 (considering all subnet changes), the router hangs with no response. Only option to revive is to reset the router using reset button.

Default installation disk provided by D-link was blocked by McAfee citing virus on the auto-run exe file. Did all the config using web interface.

Other Thoughts: Haven't tried USB mass storage option.

Not much into high speed gaming, hence cannot comprehend any fall backs here.

Rating + 5 So far, it's Great!

Pros: I have used D-Link routers for many years now, so I prefer them over Linksys, Netgear, etc. I just like the D-Link web interface better. I paired this router with a D-Link 8 port gigabit switch and my old WBR-2310 router (set to access point mode for wireless G). I disabled the 2.4GHz radio and set this router up as 5GHz only. I'm getting 216-236Mbps. Incredible improvement over the old 2.4GHz 54G.

Cons: The power cord seemed kinda short - I think it was only 4 feet long or so. I know it's nit-picking, but it's really the only con I have found so far.

Other Thoughts: I have only had this router a few days, and I have tried to stress it as much as possible. It has not dropped an connections or had any issues. It's a great router and it's one of CNet's top 5 networking devices.

Rating + 5 Best Router Ever.

Pros: Fastest router ive ever owned, i purchased it to go with my new xbox 360 wireless n adaptor. everything on xbox live works like a charm. running at wireless n 5 ghz as we speak. Runs even cooler than my old linksys router. best router ever

Cons: Simultaneous dual band is nice, but it reduces signal quality. it also lacks wireless b support. i used that for my zune as well as my wii. oh well not like i take my wii online much anyway. the ziune can alo be plugged into usb so no big.

Other Thoughts: This is by far the best router ive owned. and as always newegg had the best price and free shipping. unlike certain other sites. Best xbox live router ive had yet. definitely going d link from now on

Rating + 4 Best router I've used in awhile

Pros: Great performance, easy setup, solid web interface, ability to run both 2.4ghz and 5ghz at the same time.

Cons: WPS push button setup did not work.

Other Thoughts: This is one of the better routers I've owned. I paired it with a D-Link DAP-1522 bridge and am very happy with the performance. With my old Buffalo Wireless N router/access point I was getting a max of 1.2Mbps from my cable modem when connected wirelessly about 50ft away through 2 walls using a wireless n card on my desktop. After setting this up I am now getting 4.6Mbps with no connection drops so far. Web pages load quickly as if I was on a wired connection. My laptop with a wireless n card was getting only 190 Mbps about 20 ft away from my Buffalo router. Now it is getting 280Mbps with this D-Link. Still playing around with some of the more advanced features of this router out of the box, I am very satisfied with my purchase. I highly recommend going with the same manufacturer when setting up wireless. The 2 D-Link products I paired together work seamlessly.

Rating + 1 Not ready for public use

Pros: NewEgg took it back and refunded my money.

Cons: Where to start...I've owned numerous D-Link producs though the years (Routers, Bridges, NAS) and most have worked as advertised.
The DIR-825 is just a plain bust! Neither band works well. Transmit and receive rates never get over 140. Range is terrible. I know the 5 Gig band has less range but this is ridiculous. From 5 feet away the signal is at 30-40% It drops connections without warning which requires a reboot. Could not set auto 20/40 on 5 GHz which leaves it running N at 1/2 speed. Numerous firmware issues! Had the latest installed (2.02NA). D-Link Tech Support has really gone to the dogs...Just worthless!

Other Thoughts: Don't buy it unless you want to pull your hair out!!!

Rating + 4 Decent!

Pros: Nice looks. Relatively easy to understand if you have average understanding. Many options. Dual Band, N, etc.

Cons: Kinda slow sometimes. Breaks down once in a while (not too often). Firewall issues occasionally (although I don't know if that i router issue or something else).

Other Thoughts: I thought it was worth the money. The only router I can compare it to is the apple one (the bigger one, not sure what its called). That one was faster.

Rating + 1 Hire someone to reset the DIR-825

Pros: Oh, it's fantastic if you can get the old firmware.

Cons: Drops every two days requiring a hard boot. Not suitable for purpose intended by manufacturer.

Other Thoughts: Well I'm only here to put my two cents in. DIR-825 H/W A1 to two DAP-1522, five wireless clients and two wired clients. I don't post much, but the lack of a solution is egregious. And I'm not a professional. All of this is way too much to expect a former customer to learn about routers. Worst of all, the router was put in a closet about the same time I upgraded the firmware. It's become regular drill to get the flashlight and unplug it to fix the dropped connection.

Once again networking has become another part time job for the tenacious few and a daunting task for the casual user. It's ridiculous to try the thousands of configurations, wait two days to see if it freezes. The combinations that break the machine should never be possible.

For me, I had to resolve, verify and eliminate new, untested clients, which turned out to be completely unnecessary, unbillable personal services.

Please understand that your attempts to work around the defective firmware is services re

Pros: Worked for a week, decent speed

Cons: Arbitrarily quit working.
Spent 2 hours with Tech Support, running through typical things I already attempted countless times... eventually gave me an RMA. The replacement instructions said to return it to NewEgg instead of to them. So I decided to get a different brand rather than replacing this because many others had the same problem.

Pros: USB port for shared data storage over a LAN. Since applying the 2.02NA firmware, no problems. Currently at 74 days and counting since the last, forced, reboot. UI is intuitive, once you spend a bit of time understanding nomenclature.

Cons: Before I upgraded to 2.02NA, spastic uptime.

Rating + 1 Broken by D-Link who won't fix it

Pros: Worked okay prior to D-Link's irreversible firmware "upgrade"

Cons: D-Link's firmware upgrade 6 months ago has made the DIR-825 lockup randomly making it highly unreliable.
No support or fix from D-Link.

Other Thoughts: It's been mentioned before in other reviews. Check D-Link's support site for details on the bug introduced into the 1.12 firmware that renders the device useless for most users. It's now a 150.00 doorstop. D-Link has not addressed or fixed the issue in over 6 months which is atrocious support for an issue they created.

Avoid D-Link. They're just awful.

Pros: None. With the 1.12 firmware on the A1 model it basically does not work. Had to reboot every 1 to 3 days. Almost everyday by the end.

Cons: It just doesn't work.

Other Thoughts: I wound up buying a Netgear WNDR3700 and have had no problems and do not need to reboot it all the time. I will not buy or recommend a D-Link router. No support from D-Link either.

Rating + 2 Get something else

Pros: If you don't ask much of it, it works well and has a good feature set.

I used the DIR-825 for quite a long while simply as a wireless link to a DAP-1522 bridge. No WAN connection, no DHCP, no DNS forwarding. It handled that task without any problems. I give it two eggs for this much.

When my main router died, I pressed the DIR-825 into service on the wan connection, enabling all it's basic features. Bad mistake. The DIR-825 is simply not up to the task.

Cons: The fundamental issue is that the firmware bleeds memory. The router will slow down, and then lock up, taking down the entire LAN. I had to reboot it daily. That's unacceptable.

Come on D-LINK, there's simply no excuse for shipping bad firmware in the first place, much less for not fixing it promptly. -3 eggs.

Other Thoughts: Replaced with a NETGEAR WND3700, with which I am quite happy. The DIR-825 rests in my junk drawer, to be used only in emergencies.

Rating + 5 I don't get the bad reviews

Pros: Range is Fantastic. Better than DIR-655 and Netgear Rangemax routers. Setup is not much worse than other routers, but it has many more features and covers areas of the house we just couldn't reach before.

Cons: The only downside was having to set a static IP vs Dynamic IP from ISP. This took a little extra time, but in the grand scheme of things who cares considering the power and features you get with this router.

Other Thoughts: I am amazed that someone would give this router a low rating because of their own lack of networking knowledge. Apart from calling my ISP to get static IP info, this router was no more difficult to setup than any other router for home networking. I love all of the features of this router. This is by far the best router I have owned to date.

Rating + 4 Nice after firmware upgrade

Pros: Simultaneous dual-band with nice range/power. Many control options for networking geeks. Both hardware rev B1. Simple to link two together for extended range/features. Works fantastically once updated.

I'm giving four eggs because I've not pushed the tweaking envelope and can't say if it deserves the fifth egg -- I just don't know (yet).

Cons: Required firmware update out-of-box to overcome dropped packets/dropped connections/general mayhem. As others have noted, search for and manually install the update; the onboard update utility does not find it.

Also, while not really a con, the USB drive sharing seems rinky-dink, but I expect it would work as advertised if I had a need for that kind of connectivity.

Other Thoughts: I have two of these, one acting as an extender to the other. One is in an airplane hangar connecting to WildBlue satellite, the other is in a berm home underneath wired to above. Three iPhones, a Powerbook, a PC laptop, and a G4 iMac (acting as server) all connect wirelessly (B,G, and N). A desktop PC connects via Ethernet downstairs. File sharing is a little sticky due to the speed of the iMac, however iTunes home-sharing works great across the computers.

I chose this router for its extensive range. I wanted all our devices to be able to connect from anywhere around the hangar (particularly our phones) without having to stand in particular spots as we do to get cell signals. I also chose it for forward compatibility; as we continue to upgrade to media servers, etc, I don't want to think about connectivity.

I've ordered another to install at my parents' this Christmas, when the whole family will be together with devices on different bands. I'll update if needed.

Rating + 1 Does not work properly

Pros: It connects to the internet.

Cons: I decided to upgrade from DIR-655. Big mistake. I work in IP Telephony and use this to use several different VoIP applications. This router caused all sorts of issues with dead air and no ringback and I could not make outbound calls from my VoIP ATA running behind the router. I made sure I have the latest firmware from d-link. I have since done a lot of research on this product on-line and hear similar complaints.

Other Thoughts: I am returning this.

Rating + 1 This product is extremely poor quality.

Pros: On the rare occasions when this router is functional for more than 24 hours at a time, the feature set is good.

Cons: The router is rarely functional for more than 24 hours at a time. Router regularly locks up, requiring a reboot and sometimes a complete reconfiguration. Mine died completely after less than 4 months of continuous use. Of the many Dlink products I've purchased in the last 10 years, this is by far the most disappointing.

Other Thoughts: Avoid this router -- or at least the Rev. A version of it. It's not even heavy enough to be a good doorstop.

Rating + 1 Not ready for use

Pros: When it works, it's great and fast and has quite reasonable reach.

Cons: The version I purchased (Hardware B1, Firmware 2.02NA) is still an experimental product as far as I can tell. After numerous consultations with first and second level tech support, it became clear that they couldn't fix the problems. Basically, the issue is that it does not RELIABLY field requests for service from users. This is particularly so for wireless, but has also been observed by wired users. Generally, if your computer is on line when we recycle the router, you'll get an IP address. If you're not on line, it's very iffy as to whether you do or not. As noted, I've spent many calls with the tech support folks, all of whom are friendly and somewhat knowledgeable - but to no avail. I've now replaced this with a Linksys WRT54GL and I couldn't be happier - even though it's a bit slower.

Other Thoughts: When the next hardware or firmware revisions come out, the story may well change.

Pros: Original firmware worked fairly good

Cons: Newest firmware is absolutely terrible!

Other Thoughts: I usually don't care to write reviews on a product, but this router is so bad i feel compelled to warn everyone before they waste their hard earned cash. If you do any P2P sharing of any kind be prepared to reboot your router at least twice a day! the router just becomes un-responsive and you cant even login to it so you can gracefully reboot it. This means All services such as your VOIP service just stops working until you unplug the router for a hard reboot. Please do yourself a favor and avoid this router like the plague!!

Pros: The white color is...pretty.

Cons: It's DoA. Tech support won't call me back, and I wrote them weeks ago. It's never even powered on, and I suspect it's a simple matter of the converter's the dead part, but I didn't buy this from Newegg and so I have to go through D-Link.

Other Thoughts: I've always used D-Link network adaptors, this is my first router. Obviously not happy that there IS a problem much less that they don't seem to even acknowledge it.

Pros: NONE

Cons: DLINK has really done a terrible job with this router. Right from the box I had problems setting this one up. I have alot of Network experience but I could not get this one to work. I immediately upgraded the firmware and spent at least 4 hours with DLINK support. They were essentially useless and said the router was defective after all the time I spent. Newegg was awesome and quiclky refunded me. If you have DSL be wary with this unit!!!!

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your time. I will stick with my trusted Linksys WRT54G. I don't think router technology is up to date for 802.11N

Other Thoughts: Router was a replacement for my wrt54g which I could not recover from a bad flash, needed a router and wanted to try the Draft N Spec. I had N cards in my laptops I had been using at G speeds, and my kids had G cards. By far my favorite thing is the ability to split the signal. My kids use the G signal, and I use the N signal, Maybe its just me but I seem to have less slow downs then with my old router, plus the range is much better, I can now sit on my back porch and work on nice days.

Rating + 4 Update-Update-Update

Pros: Works fine for my use with the latest updated drivers.

Cons: A very average wireless router until I updated drivers.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this router from NE several months ago. Like others, I used the built-in web setup and it reported the V1.00 was the latest driver. I don't use all the bells and whistles like others- just wanted a good dual band router for use on my cable DSL setup. My dl speed typically runs about 8Mps, as measured via a Linksys N router. I could not get this router to get faster than 4Mps, even after playing with every setting I could find. So, it was relegated to a secondary network and I forgot about it (nope-didn't call tech support - I hate going through that).

A couple days ago I needed to move the router to another house. I took the occasion to look on the DLink site for drivers and found it had been updated several times. Did the update and now getting 8-9Mps.

Bottom line - update-update-update. And don't believe the onboard utilities.

Pros: Setup guide is easy to follow and gets it up and running fast.

The dual band wireless works great and has great range and the gigabit internet is very fast.

Cons: There is some kind of issue with it holding a connection. I don't know if I have a defective model or if there is another issue, need to play with it a bit more and contact D-Link customer service.

Also, I tried the USB adapter and it picked up my printer just fine, but would not print from it.

Rating + 4 Spot on... just as expected.

Pros: Works as described... USB port for "network storage" is nice since I work on my cars away from my desktop in the garage, I can store music on a drive at the router and have access to it... nice simple solution to having a dedicated network storage set up. Dlink has a good reputation with me as I have owned 3-4 routers from them with none dieing... I have upgraded... just not had one die like my Asus router just did.

Cons: Firmware that it ships with is a complete work of... yeah. Before you do ANYTHING else, go to the Firmware upgrade in the tools menu and download the latest drivers. Firmware that came with it would not save network settings which prevented me from accessing my networked laser printer (HP Jet Direct card). Once the firmware is upgraded, no problems setting it up.

Other Thoughts: A manufacturer should not continue to ship products with bad firmware. The upgraded firmware is pretty old, but they still ship the product with the old installed? I had to knock an egg due to it not working properly out of the box. I am neutral on this because I have a dedicated office, but the blue LEDs are pretty darn bright... plan on putting some black tape over them if you have to sleep with this router in your room :-)

Pros: Once you update the firmware, it works.

Cons: Constantly dropped both wired and wireless connections to the cable modem and a NAS until I updated the firmware. I was about to return it until I saw a review on Newegg stating there was a new firmware 2.02NA that you had to manually install. Sure enough, it's been about two weeks and I haven't noticed any dropped connections since.

Other Thoughts: DLink has a firmware update that does not show up on the router's interface. You need to get it from the DLink support website.

Pros: The router does not have an unpleasant smell. It is visually appealing if you hide it behind something. The lights are not overly bright if you cover them with black electrical tape.

Cons: I have a PPPoE connection via Fiberoptic DSL(no modem). The CD wizard failed to install because it could not auto-config PPPoE properly without having a modem present. So, I tried the manual config, and still nothing. I got on the phone with Dlink tech support and they quickly answered and began working the issue. They had me try basically every possible internet configuration at random (Dynamic, PPPoE, etc.), and still nothing. After two hours of that with no solution, they had me check my connection to see if they could blame my ISP for the problem with this router. I removed the router from the setup and tried to connect to internet with no router. My computer was able to connect in less than 1 sec. They had me put in the old router, and again I connected successfully almost instantly. So now they had me reconnect the new router and repeat every useless thing they had me do before for another 2 hours. Again, no internet. After four hours of "troubleshooting" they gave up.

Other Thoughts: They concluded that the router must be defective by simply trying every possible config at random over and over again. And when that didnt work, they tried to blame my solid-as-chromed-vanadium-steel ISP for the problem. Seriously, 10 years Ive had this ISP, and I have never, not once, been unable to connect.

Anyway, Dlink told me to RMA the defective router. Hopefully, the next one will work.

Pros: Works great if you don't mind rebooting it every other day.

Cons: Not reliable; poor range; ZERO customer support; broken firmware. D-link has been aware that their last two firmware releases have had some serious issues, yet they won't acknowledge it and will not fix it. Do yourself a favor and read some of the threads in the dlink beta forum - google for it.

Other Thoughts: The last time I purchased a D-link product I swore I'd never buy another. This time I mean it.

Rating + 1 D-link Beware

Pros: None. I have the DIR-825 Rev. A

Cons: I am a long time D-link user but this is my last. The DIR-825 is garbage. It constantly drops wireless to my Dlink DWA-160 so much so I had to run a 25' cable for a stable connection. I have to reset it everyday or it just stop working. I have updated the BIOS as each new one has come out (3 times). It has not gotten better. I have to turn off features (DNS Relay) for it to work well. Absolute horrible product and I am not alone. You should read the Dlink forums which spell out how horrible this router is and it BIOS. DO NOT BUY.

Other Thoughts: I have owned the Dlink DGL-4100, DGL-4300, and now the DIR-825.

I am going to buy the Netgear WNDR3700 soon to replace the horrible Dlink DIR-825.

NEWEGG IS THE BEST. It always gets 5 eggs in my book and I have never had a problem with NewEgg. Excellent service.

Pros: I works great with my laptop and desktop.

Cons: Doesn't work with XBOX 360 wireless adapter. Which is the main reason I purchased this router. I have to run a cable from my PC to my XBOX and "bridge" the connection and then it will work with my XBOX to run XBOX live.

Other Thoughts: I can't figure out why the D-Link dumb heads haven't made this router compatible with XBOX live. I've been using D-Link exclusively for years and haven't had any problems until now. Why even make a dual band router when you can't use the 5ghz frequency for a media/gaming console like the XBOX.

Pros: It works after firmware upgrade.

Cons: When you get the router, you'll have to find the firmware version 2.02NA. Otherwise, your router will reset every 20 to 30 minutes. You can't use the check for update in the firmware option in the router as claims the 2.00NA version it comes with is the latest. You'll have to find the driver elsewhere. Just Google "DIR-825 connection drops" and you'll see that they are shipping this with faulty firmware.

Pros: ....pretty LEDs?

Cons: I bought this long enough ago to get the Rev A. hardware version. Upon purchase I found that I could not turn on web address filtering .and. do a CDDB (gracenote) lookup without the router crashing.

Hey - the fact that there is a Rev B. of the hardware tells you something...

After months of spurious complaints from my household, I turned on email log reporting.

This piece of junk was resetting itself multiple times a day.

I have subsequently relegated to being just an AP, where it seems to be OK as a switch. The ProSafe wired router/firewall I replaced it with at the Cable modem never goes into the weeds...

Rating + 5 Router-Oh-Router-mmmm-mmmm-mmm

Pros: Price and performance while using A & B bands connecting Auto (WPA or WPA2 with cipher TKIP and AES) and all 4 switched wire ports. All without much effort with manual set up replacing a WRT55AG router. All hosts, wireless and wired, including the security surveillance video server and the Internet successfully connected. Thus so far the initial configuration has been working without a glitch at better than expected performance for 5 days of power up time.

Cons: Because of reported connectivity problems; the initial Router setup was very basic and did not use the major advanced router capabilities such as port forwarding, DMZ, QoS, etc. and traffic shaping was disabled. So the router is operating without taking advantage of any through put or advanced security enhancement features... so far.

Other Thoughts: Bought the D-Link Dir-825 Router to replace a failed Linksys WRT55AG Dual-Band Router. Ordered on 9/28/09 at 10:06 P.M. and receive it on 10/01/2009 11:23:00 A.M. Great Job as always NewEgg! Set up using A (5GHz 802.11a) and G (2.4GHz 802.11n/b/g) Wireless bands at 54Mbps one PC each and with 4 (RJ45 wire) 1Gbps ports connected to 2 PCs, a PS3, and the 4th port to a 100Mbps NetGear switch which has another 2 PCs and a security surveillance video server connected at 100Mbps. Running the the 2.4GHz band at medium power the furthest PC still shows 5 bars signal strength and is ~ 60 feet and 3 walls away. The 5.0GHz linked PC is ~ 30 feet and 2 walls away and reception is at 70% per the Linksys WPC55AG Notebook adapter's Wireless Monitor S/W. The DSL Modem is a Motorola 2210-02 S/W Ver: 7.7.3r5. So far the router has been an excellent replacement.

Pros: Easy Setup
Great Signal/Speeds
Stable (Haven't had to reset since i set it up initially)

Cons: Current firmware 2.02NA as of 20091005 does not work with the Microsoft XBOX 360 Wireless adapter. D-Link has been aware of the problem for months and still hasn't released an updated firmware to resolve the problem.

Other Thoughts: So far the router has been great for me, works perfectly with every laptop I have tried (2 or 3 at least), 2 different desktop wireless adapters, and my blackberry 8900. Would have been a 5 egg product had dlink provided a firmware update that fixes the XBOX 360 issue.

Rating + 5 D-link DIR-825

Pros: This is a great product! Ive had barley any problems with it. Lighting fast with the N band and also working off 5mhz. Also the share port feature is very nice. Some say that if a drive is plugged in it will be recognized on all computers on your network. BUT its only recognized if you install the share port software on the pc's you want to use it on. So its a nice touch that everyone cant access it.
Also practically no drops in network/internet service, especaly during heavy loads.

Cons: The web based interface is a bit confusing if you don't have a general understanding of networking and port forwarding and such. But the setup wizard guides you through that pretty quick. Also the lights on the front are pretty bright especially if used in a dark room.

Other Thoughts: Over all a very nice product, sleek design and great performance. A bit difficult setup, but if your not tech savvy just follow the instructions and you should be fine. Also, great range and great reception on the DIR-825, and the Shareport feature is great because instead of having a desktop or other computer on, you can access a printer or external drive very easily. A good buy!

Pros: Easy set up.

Cons: Router set-up just fine, no problems there. After aprox 5 minutes of being on, the router loses the connection. Several seconds later it reestabilishes the connection. Then randomly cycles the connection on and off. I re-ran the set up CD and the problem remains the same. Re-installed my not-so-old Linksys Wireless-G broadband router and it works just fine.

Other Thoughts: Searched for firmware updates and found none. If this router is too sensitive to the environment then they need to harden it. I didn't call for tech help, why should I?

Rating + 1 Many hours of regret.

Pros: When it works it is fast. I have never gotten as far as trying to use the shareport feature. It never stays working long enough.

Cons: It repeatedly locks up and won't permit any access. Not wired, not wireless, not to the internet. It has to be reset to factory defaults and setup again. Then it works for a while.
My antivirus program CLAMWIN saya that there is a virus in the setup program.
I contacted DLink for help. I got a response from someone who said he was going on vacation and would contact me when he returns.

Other Thoughts: The nature of the problem, deteriorating funtion then stop functioning altogether, That foes seem like a virus. I would really like to know if that is the case. Right now I am looking at returning the unit. It has consumed more of my time than the 4 wireless routers I have set up over the last 5 years.
If it could be made to work it should be a very good ynit. Personally I'm fed up.

Rating + 3 was great when working

Pros: The spec's speak for themselves for the most part, the speed was great both over the wireless N and gigabit wired connection.

Cons: The Shareport is only useful if you do not leave at least one PC in your work group running most of the time. As previously commented only one user on the network can use the device at a time and all users must keep a client software running in the task bar in order to connect to/disconnect from the device. between the additional steps to connect and disconnect and the additional software running on each PC it is hard to justify this feature.

My unit in particular worked great for the first day of purchase but by the next morning it was dead. It powers up but does not function, just a few incessantly blinking indicator lights. The configuration page is inaccessible, and resetting the router has no effect.

Other Thoughts: I had been under the impression that with the dual band MIMO technology I would be able to simultaneously connect to both the 2.4 and 5ghz bands with my dual band NIC in order to have redundant wireless connections. If this is possible I wasn't able to figure it out within the 6hrs or so that the unit was operational as it seemed to give you a choice of which band to connect over, and would simultaneously allow connection on either band from separate clients, however it would not allow simultaneous connections on each band from the same client.

Rating + 1 Poor compatibility and dropped connections

Pros: - good features (802.11n, dual-band, 4x1gb ports)
- inexpensive

Cons: - doesn't work

Other Thoughts: I was excited to find this product at this price point -- most other options either skip out on a feature that was important to me (e.g. they end to be either single band or have 100M ports) or they tend to cost roughly twice at much.

We first had issues connecting with all of the 802.11 g and n devices in our apartment. Between our assorted linux, windows, and apple devices, about four of six could connect to the wireless. There were all able to connect with the airport express we had been using previously and the linksys device I replaced this with.

More critically -- the device just drops connections and locks up. It ran ok for a few days at first and then would only stay up for a few hours. We checked for heat/firmware issues and couldn't find anything. Scanning the internets revealed lots of reports of identical problems.

Returned using newegg's awesome RMA process and upgraded to linksys WRT310N, which has been perfect.

Pros: Relatively easy setup. I really enjoyed this over previous companies' systems.

Rating + 1 Worthless junk; save your money

Pros: Plays nicely with my R*** video streaming device at 2.4 Ghz.

Cons: Very unstable especially for LAN connections. I have to reset my hardwired network connections every 5 t0 10 page loads. WAN connections are a more stable, but more so for Windoze-based machines than Macs. Macs seem to have a problem performing WPA negotiations with this device.
Especially when running in simultaneous dual band mode, page loads are not noticeably faster that the 11g device this replaced even when all connected machines are 11n.

Other Thoughts: The only thing "Xtreme" about this paperweight is the amount of frustration it gives trying to keep it up and running.

Pros: - Dual band simultaneous radios (2.4/5Ghz)
- 4 port 10/100/1000 switch
- Many many bells and whistles for network setup/management
- Well made web interface
- Great price point
- Looks pretty sharp too

Cons: Had to dock one egg for this one. I received the "B1" version of this router with stock firmware (2.0) and had a lot of trouble with the unit initially. DHCP reservations didn't work, the connection to internet would hang frequently and miscellaneous other problems made me wonder if I had made the wrong choice. After some investigating on the D-Link forums I found many people reported success with the newest firmware for this unit (As someone else mentioned, the built-in update check reported no updates but they ARE there). So I updated to the latest (2.02NA) and it's been smooth sailing since!

Other Thoughts: UPDATE THE FIRMWARE! Odds are you will have the older firmware version when you get your router and I suggest saving yourself some hassle by downloading the newest version before spending the time setting up your new router.

(Side note: pay attention to the hardware version of your router, each revision has a different firmware!)

Rating + 5 Great Router - LOVE IT

Pros: Dual Band 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz, wireless n and backwards compatible with g and a, etc. - but you can read all that stuff on the product specs.

Simple terms - fast router, good range, seems like it will be a good device for the long haul - I'm hoping to get 3 or 4 years out of it. And with the specs, it should certainly be good for that if not more and still be competitive with newer technology.

Cons: Set up was a bane - I mean a real bummer.

The installation disc kept telling me there was an error and could not complete installation.

The automated phone support was so aggravating that I hung up before I even reached a rep.

There was no actual manual with the product, only a "quick start" flyer.

And setting up other computers wirelessly is tricky, too. The disc says "install this disc on every computer you wish to use on this network," but when you run the installation software it tries to install a brand new router and network every time. There was no option for "add a computer to this network" or anything similar.

In the end I figured out by trial and error that vista based laptops will make you connect to the router with a cable before you can get the internet. It will detect the network but tell you you're connected with "limited connectivity" - i.e. connected to the router but not getting internet.

Other Thoughts: The modem seems worth while, just be prepared to either patiently call their tech support for installation, or use trial and error to get it set up.

Rating + 5 Excellent Router - be sure to upgrade firmware

Pros: - Good coverage (used Wireless Mon Professional to determine signal strength)
- Very fast (snappy internet response)
- The 5ghz channel is the only way to hook up an Xbox 360 using a DAP-1522 bridge in combination (throw the silly little dongle thingy away that Microsoft provides)
- Lots of good info on the Dlink forums

Cons: - Can be a complex setup (especially the wireless)
- Also be sure to check the Dlink forums and website for setup advice

Other Thoughts: Read the manuals .... trust me on this one .... some subtle stuff in there.

Excellent value overall.

Rating + 2 Firmware Issues

Pros: Feature packed, intuitive browser-based configuration, reliable

Cons: I was running firmware 1.01 on the Revision A1 unit with good success for nearly a year, but I made the mistake of updating the firmware to the latest one to try to cure some relatively minor issues.

After installing the firmware and setting it back up, I tried to log back in. However, each time I entered my password, it told me it was an invalid password. I reset the router and set it up again and had the same issue. Unfortunately, D-Link states on their download page that you cannot "roll back" the firmware once updated. They also had no solution in their support forums to fix the problem.

I picked up a new one from Staples, this time Revision B1 w/ 2.00NA firmware. I'm a little wary of original firmwares, so I updated it to 2.02NA firmware, but it still had the same problem as the A1. I ended up returning it for a DIR-655 and have not had this problem. I have many people I don't know on this network and I don't want them to be able to change the settings.

Other Thoughts: If you don't need an admin/user password on it, it should be fine for you. However, in this particular case, it's just not acceptable.

If you get a Revision A1 unit with a firmware prior to 1.10, do NOT udpate it if you need an admin password.

Rating + 1 Locks up, firmware garbage

Pros: Works fine when it's working. Unfortunately, this doesn't make me feel better when it's locking up intermittently.

Cons: For whatever reason, their firmware has an issue where it locks up intermittently and won't field traffic. It happens to me about every day or two. Power cycling the router solves the issue, but it's annoying--i.e., other brands of routers work reliably without these kinds of headaches.

Other Thoughts: Search the d-link forums on this thing before you buy it. Once they get the firmware straight, it will probably be a better option. Until then, I wouldn't buy it.

Rating + 1 XBOX 360 DOESN'T WORK!!

Pros: Wireless for PC's and Desktops works fine.

Cons: XBOX 360 Microsoft Adapter does not work with the current shipping version from Newegg.

The newest Firmware - 2.02 for Hardware Revision B1 does NOT support the Microsoft XBOX360 adapter. It DOES support all aftermarket adapters (Linksys, Madcatz, etc.) but NOT the Microsoft one.

D-Link has been made aware of the problem and have acknowledged that they will not be fixing this issue, as it does not pertain to a "Gaming" model router. Their suggestion is to purchase a different router to fix this issue.

The XBOX-360 Microsoft Adapter used to work with Firmware 1.10 on Hardware Revision A1, but not on B1 w/ 2.02. Makes no sense :(

Rating + 4 Firmware Needs Work

Pros: This router has a great feature set. I have both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands broadcasting and reception doesn't seem to take a hit while both are running like I've read about with some other dual band routers. Shareport (USB) for adding USB only printers or external hard drives or even a 3G modem.

Cons: Firmware needs some work - if you check out Dlinks forums for the DIR-825 you'll see some issues. Mostly with the A1 hardware (I received the B1 revision when ordering at the end of July 09.) Even with the B1 and the shipped 2.0 firmware I had issues with the connection dropping. I upgraded to 2.02NA firmware and that resolved it. However I had reception issues that took a lot of tweaking to get right. See below.

Other Thoughts: This thing feeds my DLink DAP-1522 bridge over 5Ghz which is weaker signal wise compared to 2.4Ghz but the router was reporting no higher than 67-70% signal strength to the DAP-1522 when it was right next to it. Meanwhile the 1522 reported 100% connection quality.

After a lot of trial and error I received a 20% bump in signal strength by disabling the QOS/Traffic Shaping and forcing 20Mhz only on both the 1522 and the 852. It now shows 50-53% connection (~15 feet away through 1 wall) but real world tests (streaming 1080p video to my PS3) results are great. I don't get any stutter or skipping on high bitrate videos. Given the other options at this time I still think this is the best bang for the buck - just be careful if your tech knowledge isn't very high or you'll get frustrated easy.

Rating + 3 Problems Exist - rev A1

Pros: I so want to love this router. I have been a Dlink fan for years and bought this to pair with a DAP-1522 for gaming and video streaming on the 5GHz band. For the price this device has loads of features and configuration settings. A nice Newegg promotion prompted me to buy, even though I had read about many problems here and on the Dlink forum.

Cons: I have experienced two significant issues. With firmware 1.01, the wireless systems would completely reboot many times during the day. I upgraded to firmware 1.11NA, which seems to have solved the wireless issues, but creates a new problem with the router locking up every 2-3 days. Turning off DNS Relay appears to resolve that problem. Both of these issues are well documented at forums.dlink.com with a large set of users.

I have been very disappointed with the quality of the overall product out of the box.

Other Thoughts: As of this writing, Dlink released a beta to firmware 1.12. As the device seems to be stable now, I will wait to upgrade to the new firmware.

The price/feature set is so good, I am willing to work through the problems and hopefully Dlink will eventually get this rock solid like my last router. Most consumers will not be (and probably should not be) this patient and will return the product.

There is a hardware rev B, but it looks like that version has its own set of problems by the posts on the Dlink forum.

Rating + 2 Too Much of a Hassle To Fool With

Pros: Lightning fast speeds when it was connected.
Tech support tried to help and was easy to get a hold of via the telephone.

Cons: This router was totally unreliable. I could not depend ion it to stay connected. I bought it because I had a notebook that had the n draft high speed and needed a new router because of my 20.0 cable connection. I had to unplug this router so many times in one day that I thought the ac wire would break. I had this D-Link for 2 weeks and finally RMA'd it and bought a g router made by Linksys that was less money.

Other Thoughts: I now have download speeds of 27.8 on the Linksys and would not attempt to buy another D-Link. I would add the tech support with D-Link was OK (when I could understand them) but after 5 calls they told me to send it back.
New Egg was great as they emailed me free shipping labels and credited my account. I purchased the Linksys from them and it got here quick. I was loyal to NE because of the way they treated me and will continue to use them whenever possible.

Pros: Will tell you when I get one that works.

Cons: Plugged it in for the first time and the "D-Link" light would come on but the power LED never did and the router is dead as a brick. Tried multiple power outlets, reset button, USB drive with firmware...nothing. Returning for another one and praying it goes better but by looking at the feedback on D-Link own forums even once I get one that "works" it looks like I'm likely to have tons of problems.

Pros: All the parts were in the box?

Cons: I got the B1 rev with 2.00NA firmware and could not maintain a WAN connection. It was so bad that I could not log into newegg.com for a RMA or ordering a replacement!

Pros: My family had a Netgear for a while but we always had troubles with it, moved up to the D-Link DIR-615 which was one of the few N routers out there at the time. Brother recently got a DSi and wanted internet connection but I do a lot of HD streaming through my laptop so I needed the N. Got the DIR-825 and it works like a charm. I have the 2.4 GHz running on g with WEP encryption for the DSi and then the 5 GHz running on n with WPA2 encryption. The QOS and WISH features are also nice for gaming which I also do through my laptop. You can easily give more bandwidth to certain programs and they will run smoothly.

Also not really noted from other reviews they have a pretty neat 'Guest' feature where you can quickly and easily give access to certain computers and have a one-screen-see-all format to limit their activity on your network.

Cons: Had a little trouble setting it up but that was mostly due to the fact that I was trying to run both the 825 and the 615 and "link" their 2.4 GHz signals to create a large network... Didn't work.

After that failed attempt it was a simply set up, plug it all in, restart the computer and then set up security.

Other Thoughts: When I was looking at this router and reading reviews both here and other sites people had mentioned that the mixed speeds struggle but I haven't noticed a difference. Maybe its just because the DSi is running on the 2.4 GHz signal but its not detrimental to anything.

Rating + 3 Newegg pricing was great for this unit’s simultaneous dual N channels. I have to admit it does not live up to its quality and specification as advertized.

Pros: (1)Separate wireless guest account that allows for independent clients. Saves you money and time for not having another router. (2) I did not experience any lockups in Web browsing or having to reset the router as in older Linksys models. However, not perfect, unit will get some timeouts when you ping its IP address.

Cons: (1) No real automated IPv6 support. If you don’t know what your doing, clients will only get limited local address for IPv6 and its up to you to setup/find your own IPv6 servers and gateway. I get better support from the Linksys WRT610N and I let them find a trusted server/gateway and “URL” for me. (2)The signal rang on this unit really does not come close as they advertise(10,000 sq ft, but more like 1,000 sq ft) not even close to the DGL-4500. You’ll be spending more money on antennas and boosters than you think. In their attempt to design and program this unit to run greener, cooler, their cost. Dlink made it really sorry. Unit could be designed with an internal fan for better cooling. I like to say this because you can only do so much to the programming to reduce heat, but adding a fan and heat-sinks is much better. I never had to do anything to modify the DGL-4500 antennas or even when it ran hot. So I ask Dlink; "Why???"

Other Thoughts: Used with wireless devices WUSB600N, WPC600N, Laptop Atheros AR5009 wireless, DWA-652, and TEW-664UB(Not- WIFI Certified). Used with wireless router DGL-4500 and WRT610N.

Rating + 2 Firmware is useless.

Pros: Its an 802.11n router with gigabit
USB port for printers.

Cons: Firmware is missing critical features.
Complex setup with lots of options except ones that matter
No HTTPS administration.
No Loopback NAT
no way to override DNS server in DHCP server configuration.

Other Thoughts: This router will meet my needs. I have Hardware Version B1 and Firmware Version 2.00NA.

First, I have several domain names with dynamic DNS. I setup port forwarding for my server following all the instructions. There are two interfaces for doing the same thing (Virtual servers, port forwarding). I am not sure what all the differences in implementation are, but I have used both. I can't reach my servers on the public IP address from inside the network no matter what I do. Loopback NAT routing (as seems to be the best description) is essential.

So I setup a name server with alternate local addresses for my internal machines. At this point I found there is no way to get the router to pass this DNS server in the DHCP leases. My old Linksys had no such problem.

This router doesn't support HTTPS administration, either local or remote. This is the final straw and will result in a return to the local store I purchased it from.

Rating + 2 Great spec's but poor firmware

Pros: Great specifications. Strong wireless signal and super fast router.

Cons: When using a browser it continuously drops the internet connection. If you set the WAN speed to 10Mbps then service does not drop as much, but then why pay for fast cable and not be able to enjoy it. No 802.11b support for my son's PSP.

Other Thoughts: Technical support were very helpful as they came up with the suggestion of throttling the WAN speed. Level 3 spport admitted the dropping is a known issue with the Rev B1 model and there is no new firmware to fix it yet, and to try to swap the router for an A1 version. However having read all the issues on D-Link's support forum's I think life is too short to continue to wait for new firmware to fix a problem on a router which was supposed to fix the problems on the original model.

Rating + 4 Fast and Reliable, but......

Pros: Its a great dual band router and I should give it a 5. I live in a townhouse and its in the basement and I get "very good" for a connection status on the 5Ghz channel on the third floor. It holds at 300 Mbps (actual throughput is probably 90 Mbps) on the Windows Wireless details page. On the 2.4ghz I'm sure I'd be "excellent" all the time. The Guest mode and ability to segregate networks are great!

Cons: The only con is the fact that I waited a few months because of the postings about the bad firmware.

Other Thoughts: I only gave this a 4 because Newegg should have sent me the new Rev. B, not the older Rev. A. Its been out since April and the stock should have been refreshed. Other than that, its a great buy.

Rating + 4 D-Link 825

Pros: The D-Link 825 installed without a hitch utlizing the install utility provided with the product. There is excellent high level tutoring / explanation per the definition of terms for the new or average person. This product is fully meeting my current needs.

Cons: This wireless router is being used with a built-in wirless N receiver in a new laptop. In testing the distance the best this combination would give me in my home, with a fairly torutous path was about 60 ft. My expectation were more like 100 ft. At some point I my try it with a matching D=link adapter card.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this product to others. This is my firsst entry into the wireless world and this router enabled the wireless laptop and printer and integrated the ethernet hard wire desk top computer just fine.

Rating + 4 Rev B1 Shipping

Pros: To be updated when I order a unit.

Cons: To be updated when I order a unit.

Other Thoughts: Please post when if you receive a rev-b1 edition of this unit from newegg. It is a totally different atheros-based hardware platform that is supposed to be supported by the open-source firmwares like openwrt, tomato, and dd-wrt. The revision can be found both on the bottom of the box near the serial/model numbers, and on the bottom of the unit itself. The original units are rev-a1, and the new atheros-based units are rev-b1.

It's hard to believe that d-link released an update this significant without a new sku, it makes purchasing very frustrating.

Pros: Sleek looking. Footprint not bad at all.

Rating + 2 Please make a well informed purchasing decision.

Pros: Gigabit support. See D-Link marketing page for other pros.

Cons: Read the numerous posts in the DIR-825 D-Link Forum (Google D-Link forums).

Current firmware (v1.11) suffers from severe memory leaks and will require you to reboot your unit at least once every 24hrs.

Extremely poor support from D-Link. They are well aware of this problem, yet have not provided their customers' with a solution to their latest, buggy firmware release, which CANNOT be downgraded once flashed.

Other Thoughts: My prior Linksys/DD-WRT router performed flawlessly for a number of years. How silly of me expect similar reliability from a D-Link product.

Rating + 5 Finally! A dual band router that doesn't break the bank

Pros: * Dual band across 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz - can fully configure what protocols are used across what band.
* Gigabit on the switch - only this one and the Linksys has gigabit on a dual band router.
* Fully configurable firewall with point to point rules. The Linksys didn't have this so put me off.
* DHCP address reservations (i.e. static addressing without the hassle).
* G is much quicker than the Linksys WRT55AG that this replaces.
* N performance has been stable and obviously much quicker than G. I use N from my desktop now and it's actually usable to browse large archives of MP3s and Photos.
* Guest wireless network that is isolated from your own private network.

Cons: * Can't switch off plain HTTP for management on the local network. It's possible on the remote management though.
* Not really a con, but a point for all devices these days - I wish you could adjust the brightness of the display lights on the front so where they are in a TV center or a bedroom, they don't annoy the hell out of at night.

Other Thoughts: * I have mine configured to run G on 2.4Ghz for my Wii and PS3 / older laptops and N on 5Ghz for my PC and laptop. My storage unit is wired into the switch along with my media center (wish i could get rid of cables) until a PCI-Express N 5Ghz card is available.
* Desktop PC has the Linksys dual band PCI card
* Laptop is an HP with the bog standard Broadcom A/B/G/N card built in.

Rating + 5 settings, settINGS, and more SETTINGS!

Pros: I just retired my L*nksys WTR54G v1.1 <sniff><tear><sniff> for this sexy little number. Although I had DDWRT on my previous router, for most of it's life with the stock firmware it didn't have much other than basic routing you could fool with. Maybe it's because it's been close to 6 years since I purchased a wireless router and they're all like this now but I'm super excited about the feature rich nature of this router's firmware. There are so many settings to play with It'll be weeks before I'm bored with tweaking it.

Cons: If you are easily overwhelmed with networking, you might want to buy my WRT54G v1.1 with stock firmware instead so you won't have to tweak many settings. If not then enjoy all the things you can fool with on the DIR-825

Other Thoughts: I'm seriously going to miss my WRT54G but I must say I think Dlink has hit the spot with this one. I'm excited about it and If you like tweaking your home network, you will be too. I should also mention that the router feel solid, and well built something that caused me concern with Dlink products in the past (they just didn't feel right to me). Dlink, if you can provide me with 6 years of service from this router like my WRT54G gave me then you will have a very happy customer. This customer when happy will sing your praises.

Rating + 4 works much better than the usual wireless router junk

Pros: I haven't had much luck with wireless equipment, neither have most of the people I know, neither has my company. The wireless nonetheless does a 'relatively' good job. Coupled with the DWA-160 USB adapter, I get pretty good performance, wavering between 160 and 270 Mbps. There is ~30 ft and 1-2 walls (depending on how you look at it) between the router and adapter. The adapter is high off the ground, but the router is literally leaning against a desk on the carpet. I positioned the antennae as shown in the manual, haven't tried adjusting them experimentally yet. I imagine that once I mount the router much higher on the wall I'll probably see an addition 20 or so Mbps worth of signal strength. It looks like my computer likes the 2.4GHz signal more than the 5. I'll try forcing a 5 Ghz connection later.

I should note that in the router settings, both 2.4 and 5 bands are enabled, but broadcast 802.11n only. I've read that enabling all protocols can signicantly hurt performance (con).

Cons: Don't bother with the CD if you know better (know better?). When you're using the actual "routing" of the router (DHCP, and whatnot), it has to profile (I guess) your internet connection before things will go. This takes a few minutes. Most if not all settings require a router restart, which guess what... means it will run that internet connection test everytime. But I'm not using that (WAN port is empty), so restart times are acceptable, since it doesn't do the connection profiling.

I've (effectively) only tested this router on 2.4gHz 802.11n mode.

Other Thoughts: This is one of the VERY few choices for a Dual N wireless point that has gigabit ethernet ports all over it. I went to the store, and despite multiple shelves of networking gear, this was the ONLY thing that fit my requirements: simply Dual N 270 or 300Mbps wireless with 4+ gigabit ethernet LAN.

A few comments on my setup: I am using this strictly as a wireless bridge to an existing network. I turned the DHCP server off and assigned the LAN-side of the router a static ip address (so I can administrate it still without having to guess what ip the actual DHCP gave it). I have internet connection sharing set up through an Ubuntu box which acts as the real gateway from my home network to the internet. So the second ethernet port of the Ubuntu box goes directly into one of the lan ports of the d-link "router". In other words, a setup like this works with this router.

I could say more, but you have other reviews to read.

Rating + 5 Great product -- don't count on USB connectivity

Pros: --Lots of great features that allow you to stream content (like to a TV or xBox), play games, and surf the web all @ the same time w/o slowing things down

--Easy to understand and use menus + setup

--dual 2.4/5 GHz offers the most felxability

Cons: --Shareport stopped working after 1st day. Found other users with similar problems.

--In looking for a solution to my Sharport problems I discovered that dlink has HORRIBLE online support -- don't count on it for anything

Other Thoughts: --Had to tweak some settings w/ my VPN client to get that to work.

CONCLUSION:
--Great for a power user and/or someone w/ lots going on in their network
--If you want a router w/ a USB port look elsewhere, dlink software renders it unusable

Rating + 5 Sweet!

Pros: After purchasing two other routers in the past two weeks, I am relieved to have this machine in my hands. It was a piece of cake to set up (just follow the wizard on the included CD). It worked right out of the box the first time. It is the fastest of any router that I've experienced as well. And in addition to its exceptional functionality, it is pleasing to the eye. The lights on the front are bright and easy to see (and a sleek looking blue to boot).

Cons: I have not owned this long enough to know for sure if there are any "cons". It was the most expensive router I've ever purchased, but given the fact that it works so well, I think it was worth the price. Also, potentially the bright lights might be too bright for me since I keep my computer in my bedroom, but that's just me.

Pros: Great product well built, easy config/installation. I have this device for over 2 months now and connection stability is great, haven't reboot the device because of failed connections. Firmware updates is great for both dual band. Good price for dual band router, steal!!!!

Cons: Latest firmware updates eliminate old network devices (A/B) compability, but that's the past. We leaving the future of fast growing technology and we are currently on future Dual Band router still draf 2.0.

Other Thoughts: I love newegg but i did not buy this device from them since they have it same price at best buy. If you are going to buy this device i recommend you to get it from here, because i doubt best buy will still have the same price, they too overpriced.

Rating + 4 Pretty Good w/ 1 Reservation

Pros: Small form factor size and all necessary accessories are included. I didn't bother with the CD, but I did upload the new firmware 1.11 and it performs exceptionally well @ 2.4ghz. I'm getting a constant throughput @ 104-130Mbps on that spectrum. Streaming Blu-Ray content to my LDC TV with AWESOME results and no lag...

Cons: I received the A1 version rather than the B version (but so far with the firmware update, I haven't had any problems except -)...5Ghz band doesn't seem to work, by itself. I have used both 2.4 & 5 Ghz together and both work, although the performance of the 2.4Ghz seems to be exceptionally good by itself. My experience, however, may be due to some changed settings. Don't let this discourage you from buying this unit, the performance alone with the 2.4Ghz is enought to have satisfied my decision. The web interface has so many options you won't know what to do with yourself! Anything...and I do mean anything...that you need to configure your Wireless network is included in this web interface. Great job on that Dlink! This is my 2nd 802.11x router (L*nksys being my previous one) and this is by far the best I've had yet...

Other Thoughts: For this cost, DLink really needs to improve on the performance of the 5Ghz spectrum.

Rating + 4 Almost Excellent

Pros: * Streams HD video flawlessly. Solved my problems wonderfully.
* Transferring large files, downloading large files, watching networked TV and talking on the phone without a hitch. Excellent upgrade over the DGL-4300.
* Transfer rates from Vista PC to Vista PC exceed 10MB/s
* Runs both 2.4GHz and 5GHz simultaneously, which is nice for the PCs to be on one network and gaming systems / iPods and visitors to be on another.
* Signal strength does not diminish transfer rates a huge amount (8MB/s at 30% signal and 10+MB/s at 85% signal)
* Would work well with FIOS/Wideband speeds as I have seen 34Mbps from my provider without a hiccup from the router.

Cons: * Disconnects from the network multiple times an hour even with 75+% of signal. The router disconnects and reconnects within about 45 seconds, but this is very annoying. Sometimes goes for hours on end without disconnecting. This occurred with the shipped firmware and beta firmware. Hopefully this will be fixed with the next release. Not an ISP problem.
* Wireless N at 5GHz signal is significantly less than G, on both this router and my previous DGL-4300. A 5GHz signal will have a shorter range than a 2.4GHz signal, but in this close proximity it should not matter. N is *supposed to use bounced signal better than G, but in my experience there is less signal.

Other Thoughts: * Paired with DWA-160 dual-band USB adapter. I wish there was a dual-band PCI wireless adapter.
* Cannot find any reasonably priced high-gain dual-band antennas to increase signal strength
* The transfer rates on the N network at 2.4GHz are slower than the 5GHz.
* Wireless N on 5GHZ = 20 feet direct line of site to router gets about 80-85% signal. 45 feet, upstairs to down yields 25-35% signal.

Pros: Very nice setup menu. device is highly configurable. very stable and a delight to use and set it up.

Cons: Very poor range when compared to my WRT54GX4, or to just about any other router I've owned.

Other Thoughts: So many reviewers complain about teh range of these D-Link routers. I'm convinced it's not just a user perception problem. If D-Link would fix this one issue, they would have a truly superior product.

Rating + 4 solid router

Pros: - 2 antennas + extra port for 3rd
- stable 2.4ghz wifi
- quick processor, great switching and routing throughput
- secure firmware, optional login with captcha
- efficient QOS
- high-class firmware has just about every feature you could want, with detailed access log

Cons: - annoying ui is annoying, certain vital main menus will prompt you for wizard intervention every d*mn time you access them, easy to change through firmware but who knows when
- newegg is still stocking a1 units, why? this is automatically -1 egg

Other Thoughts: dissapointing to receive a1 revision, I got ready to deal with all sorts of problems but after putting this thing through heavy use I gotta say it's all good. both are atheros based so the difference won't be huge. not like netgear who sell a1 as beta junk so we can do their testing, this is stable hardware.

the 2.4ghz radio gives me full 130mbps throughput everywhere in my 600+ sq ft 1 bedroom place with many walls and interference in between, no problem streaming 1080p video from end to end with no drops.

the gigabit switch is indeed as fast as they say it is, no problems handling heavy torrenting on multiple machines, with simultaneous lag-free gaming over a 15/2 connection. almost feels like a waste to run cable wan instead of fiber.

bottom line is if you want good 2.4ghz 802.11 b/g/n + fast gigabit then this is top quality for the price. 5ghz is still undeveloped for any brand so it will suck either way, the frequency is only good for forward compatibility at this point.

Rating + 1 so far the worst wireless router I have had

Pros: the wired gigabit ports work great

Cons: This thing has the worst range and signal strength of any wirelees router I have ever owned and I have had more than a few> bought it mainly for the gb lan but my 360 and wireless g laptop need connection too. Both are in the living room maybe 12' from the router in a 750 square foot apartment and the laptop keeps dropping and the 360 cannot connect at a high enough rate to run as a media center extender. The $49 dlink router this was going to replace performs way better.

Rating + 3 Got the A1 Hhw version, not B1

Pros: Nice looking DIR-825 box.

Cons: Box came with a slight razor blade cut thru the shrink wrap, likely from the packing and shipping process. Not a big deal, if it was the B1 version. It wasn't though - the hardware was the A1 version w/ firmware 1.01.

Other Thoughts: Got a RMA for another one. I hope that I get the B1 version, newegg "doesn't guarantee a specific hardware version". I wish my local large box distributor had the B1, but as they have 3 left in stock, they probably won't re-order for a while. :(

I got stuck with the 1st of 2 hardware versions on my current router, so I don't want to get the wrong one again.

Pros: After trying a few other routers this actually works.
Dual Band is working - the 5ghz is solid

Cons: None found yet

Other Thoughts: I am a long time Linksys guy and despite all the bad reviews on the new Linksys routers I tried anyway with 2 different routers (300 and 600 series) and they both failed miserably. It took a small amount of config work and more importantly understanding about what devices can/cannot accept a 5ghz connection (e.g. my eee pc can only do 'N' at 2.4ghz) and I was then good to go. At a price of $129 - this is not too shabby.

Rating + 1 Range too limited to be useful

Pros: Easy setup, excellent software, fantastic control of every aspect of the harware and protocols.

Cons: Unless you're using this router in a line-of-sight office environment, I don't think the range would ever be good enough to be useful.

Other Thoughts: I'd like to like this product, but it's really impossible. Even at a distance of 6 feet I can get no more than 150 M/s. At a distance of 30 feet through 1 floor I'm seeing 10-15 M/s, signal stregnth only "Good" on the N-protocol, even when G is disabled. Compare this with a 45G from Linksys (running G only) which consistently shows signal strength "Excellent" and 54 M/s in the same location. And no, I am not a shill for Linksys. Their N-band router, which I also tried, got a 1-egg review from me as well.

Pros: I ordered this router along with a D-Link laptop card and two wireless bridges. The DI-825 suffers from the identical problem that the previous reviewer commented on.

The 5GHz band is DOA!

The 2.4GHz band is functioning properly and has good throughput.

Cons: Aside from half of the router being broken, none.

Cons: Bigger antennas would be cool, would improve my 5ghz connection.

Other Thoughts: Great speed for the money!

Rating + 5 Great Router

Pros: Fast. Works with all bands at both the 5 and 2.4 mhz. Webpage interface is easy to configure. Tons of options. USB works as advertise on my low end brother printer. Already had firmwear version 1.1 pre-loaded.
I can transfer 1 gig of data from my wired connection to my wireless connection in 3 mintues. This is with the AES Cipher, and WAP 2 both on.

Cons: Only 2 things I can find wrong, and they are very small indeed.

1. It seems with 2.4 Mhz turned off, and 5 Mhz turned on, the wireless light goes out. I would think it should be on if any wireless options is working on the router.

2. On the guest network settings, I can't see any option to allow/deny guest access to the USB port on the router. I do realize the guest would have to know enuff to download the d-link software, but a tech savy guest could go to d-links homepage, load the software, then look at (lets say your personal picts of your wife or whatever)....

I would like to see an option that would allow/dis-allow them access to the USB Share Port. (check box)

Other Thoughts: Great router. The 2 cons are very picky, and i'm very happy with it so far!! Will keep you posted, if i'm allowed to edit this.

By the way, i'm using this with a Linksys USB card, that has both 5 and 2.4 access. So far, only useing N protocol. Works like a charm.

Rating + 5 The Only Router Out There that Actually Works

Pros: It works with many devices doesn't require reboots.
Good range
Fast
No dropped connections
Dual Band

Cons: Setup could be a bit more intuitive but you get it working eventually.

Other Thoughts: I have seriously been through about 5 routers in the last 5 years, tried many brands (Linksys, Buffallo, etc) and they all SUCK. The main problem is when you get enough devices on there both wired and unwired, the other routers start dropping connections and need to be rebooted. Terrible...

I am pleased to say I have finally found a router that does not drop connections and has yet to need a reboot after weeks in use. THIS IS THE ONLY ROUTER THAT WORKS AS ADVERTISED - GET IT!

Rating + 5 Absolutely Great

Pros: Easy Setup, Great Range, Speed, And Interoperability.

Cons: Usb Share Not Compatible With Mac And Only Works With One Pc At A Time,BUT IT IS A BONUS AND DON'T FACTOR THIS IN YOUR DECISION

Other Thoughts: I Bought This Product With Some Apprehension Due To The Fact That My Had Bought The DIR-655 And I Was The One Tasked To Install It And The Software Was Unable To Install Correctly (It Was On A Windows XP Machine) And I Had To Use The Web Configuration And It Was Very Unintuitive And Lengthened The Setup Substantially But Suffice To Say It Worked Very Well Thereon After So When It Came Time For Me To Buy A New Router I Looked For One With A Reasonable Price Plus Great Performance On Draft N 2 And Decided To Go With It And I Was Really Amazed To Find The Setup Experience Quick Easy And Didn't Require My Intervention (It Was A Windows Vista Machine) And The Range, Speed, And Interoperability (I Also Have A MacBook Pro) Are Superior, I Would Recommend It To Anybody.
P.S. The USB Share Technology Works As Promised (I Connected A Printer) But It Doesn't Work On A Mac And Only Works On One Pc At A Time, But Since It Is A Bonus,And It Didn't Factor Into My Decision To Buy The Product.

Rating + 5 Awesome router

Pros: What an awesome router - the installation CD was very easy to use and copied all of the settings from my old router to the new one. Throughput speeds noticibly increased immediately after the installation. Total time to install took about 10 minutes.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I have not tried the sharepoint option on the router yet, but plan to soon.
