Rating + 4 Parallel Print Server

Pros: Parallel port print server that works well once setup. The management software is easy and well documented.

Cons: Network setup requires the print server to be on the same IP range as your computer. The stand has groves that covers the parallel port. You can make it work on a different side, but may not be quite as stable.

Other Thoughts: Works well with my old HP 4P.

Rating + 5 Great print server, would only be better with wireless.

Pros: Works out of the box, read the directions plug it in turn your printer on throw the setup cd in your pc install drivers done. Have it running a Cannon Pixma ip4000r on my network for a vista and xp pc works flawlessly.

The Pixma was a network printer but if you say re-formatted your pc or got a new pc you had to go un hook it bring it into the room with that pc and re set it up. Since I have re-formatting every few months this was a hassle so I bought this to get around doing that. Works awesome and even does the wake on lan for the printer so I don't have to go turn it on when I want to print.

Cons: No wireless. However since my router is wireless shouldn't need to be. Could be cheaper as well but otherwise a great unit.

Other Thoughts: Don't understand all the reviews stating this is hard to setup. All you have to do is put in the cd and it does pretty much everything for you other than pointing it towards printer drivers, took me less than 5 minutes for each pc.

Rating + 4 Gets the job done

Pros: Set this up to share two printers on a small office network and it works well nearly all the time. Every once in awhile it needs to be power cycled. Other than that, no complaints

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Had a dot-matrix printer hooked up to it via parallel cable and initially it kept printing random characters on the page but it turns out was a simple settings change that needed to be made on this device and all worked well. I was unaware at the time but I believe the issue and solution can be found on Zonet's website in their FAQ's/Support section.

Rating + 5 It all works together.

Pros: I was a little concerned because I had a rmulti-port router and a ethernet switch configured for several devices. I integrated this print server into the mix, and after a little trial and error, everything worked- much to my amazment. So, in my basement and out of sight is the DSL modem, a Linksys 4 port wireless router, a 5 port Ethernet switch, the Zonet print server, two USB network printers, and a USB TV server.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: It is a good idea to make a wiring diagram in case you have to take it apart.

Rating + 4 Great box, terrible CD software.

Pros: Works great, good web interface, very versatile in that it works with Windows, Linux and Mac. Good instructions on the CD.

Cons: The software to configure the printer server is worthless. Thanks to the previous reviewers, I quickly realized that I needed to manually configure the print server and forget the software. I had my computer configured on the same subnet and could ping and bring up the web interface on the print server but, the configuration software claimed it could not find the print server. I read the user manual that was on the CD and configured the print server via the web GUI and then manually configured my computers.

Other Thoughts: Great price, support for most operating systems, good instruction manual but the print server configuration software is garbage. The user's manual on the CD has great configuration instructions. Follow the instructions for your OS in the manual and even with a moderate level of technical knowledge, you should be able to get this configured. If Zonet's software had worked, I would have given a 5 rating.

Rating + 5 Great PS - seamless once setup

Pros: (relatively) easy to setup and work with my XP machines with some understanding of TCP/IP. I just followed the tips of the previous reviewers. (Docs are somewhat lacking.) No need to install the software utility on accompanying CD.

Cons: Not really a con, but on my old Win98 box I needed to install the accompanying software utility to be able to finally get it to work with the print server. Not quite as easy to set up on 98 as an XP.

Other Thoughts: You can check which printers are compatable by going to the linked "Manufacturer Product Page" and looking under Support -> FAQ

Rating + 1 Complete junk

Pros: No pros at all.

Cons: First one didn't work right out of the box. Second one worked for just longer than the warranty period, then failed in various ways.

Other Thoughts: Basically the unit would print one page, then malfunction and have to be restarted. Don't waste your money on this Zonet server!

Rating + 5 Awesome Print Server

Pros: Auto-detects printers, stable, and works flawlessly. Easy to setup lp print queues and the web interface is well laid out and responsive.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I guess if you have difficulty setting a static IP address on your computer then this print server (along with probably every other computer hardware part) might be a bit difficult. I use these in many businesses when the cheap NetGear print servers I bought a year ago all died.

Rating + 1 DEFECTIVE

Pros: Looks simple.

Cons: Don't work.

Other Thoughts: Just got it and tried to install it. Can't install the software because it doesn't detect the printer server. Checked everyting and seems that it's defective good. Sent couple of emails to zonet but no reply. No RMA on this good and had to contact the manufacturer. Basically get goods from well known company.

Rating + 5 When all else fails.... read the directions

Pros: Easy to use interface both in http and in the PSAdmin utility, quick to install, no problems

Cons: printer drivers installed on each client, instructions a bit difficult to follow (poor english), SMB names don't work correctly. You do need a strong grasp of how to install TCP/IP printer ports for clients to use the printers on this PS. Add New Printer | Local Printer | Other Port (set to TCP/IP) | enter IP address and port name | THEN SELECT CUSTOM SETTINGS and check the Queue settings on the PS. match the queue type and the name you've set for it, and you're set.

Other Thoughts: MODERATE knowledge of TCP/IP needed (if you can set up the DHCP on your home router, you can handle this), and the utility it comes with can be helpful, but you don't need it. just use a web browser the same way you would to get into your DSL/ Cable(ick) modem. Like mentioned before, set your Network card to use 192.168.5.2, then use a browser to open the interface and change the IP on the PS to 192.168.0.x, reboot and change your NIC back to get an IP automatically. I didn't see anything to indicate a problem with print speed, but I installed all the drivers to the client. Rather impressed with this, going to get one of my own.

Finally, my opinion on those who have said this is difficult to set up; frankly, they don't know what they are doing, and should start by reading the directions on the CD that comes with it.

Rating + 5 Full function print server

Pros: * Multi network protocol support
* Multi print protocol support
* Small & light table top design
* No software required for NT/XP
* Nice built in Web mgmt/monitor
* Fast operation for most protocols

Cons: * Won't work with computer hosted printers & some older printers (check the zonet website)
* Windows monitor & Canon status won't work remotely (they didn't on my HP Jet PS either)
* NetMan \\share\rsrc\ server shares work very very very slowly for me.

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a great PS. I marked it down only because the NetMan shares are to slow to be usable for me. But, there are 3 or 4 four other ways to print that work very quickly. So it's really just kick in the tushy to Zonet to improve that part of the product.

I didn't use the supplied SW. I simply read the manual and online FAQ and had no problems setting this puppy up. Not sure what all the fuss is about - network newbies I guess.

No problems printing via TCP/IP LPR and RAW. Also IIP (HTTP/XHTML) worked well. \\netshares showed up just fine in explorer on my various computers, but printing was to slow to be usable. No time to debug it, but it could be the configuration I use and not the product.

The queue monitor works just fine no matter how you print, but the status monitors do not so you'll want to disable that feature from your computer.

Overall a very good product unless you must have \\shares

Pros: Neat device, comes with a setup program, automatic install, and a utility that connects to the print server via SNMP.

Cons: Not as fast as I expected. I've found very little if not any buffer on this device. On large documents, expect a slow down on the host, because it has to trasnmit the document as it receives it in the print server. It's also a little hard to install if something goes wrong with the setup, or if you have a specialized network. Good thing I have networking skills!

Rating + 5 Excellent Functionality & Value

Pros: This is a great product and a fantastic value. Excellent build quality and highly functional.

Cons: A hard copy of the manual would have been nice.

Other Thoughts: While I would not describe the setup process as intuitive, anyone with basic networking know how should not have any problems. Others have stated that this item shipped with no manual, however my package arrived with a quick install guide. A detailed manual was included on the CD. I recommend assigning the print server a static IP address which is configurable via the installation utility (CD). My computer found the print server even though the default IP was on a different subnet than my private network. Dissable your firewall before installation.

Rating + 4 Setup issues - doc so-so

Pros: This thing works once you get it setup. I have it a rating of a 4, since I can overlook setup and doc issues as long as the thing works. Would have given it a 5 otherwise

Cons: 1. Documentation needs some work.
2. You don't need the software disk.
3. As others have stated, default IP is 192.168.5.1. Lots of ways around this, take your pick.

Software is bad. Could ping re-configured printer server, could telnet into it, but the flaky software couldn't find it. Good thing is, you don't need the software to add a printer.

Other Thoughts: As I said, you don't need the software, which didn't find the print server on from one of my laptops even after I set the IP of the print server correctly and rebooted it. You have two config choices and I'm actuall using both from different machines.

1. On PC, add new network printer and use \\<mach>\<share>
2. On PC, add local printer and set TCP port as in documentation.

Rating + 5 Good once you set it up

Pros: The only tricky part is setting the PS's IP address. I used Linux w/a crossover cable attached directly to the PS. Changed eth0 on my linux box to match the default IP network setting of the PS and then telnet-ed in to the PS to give the PS a new _static_ IP address (don't set DHCP unless you have static DHCP enabled on your DHCP box). The web interface is also good. I didn't have to use the included CD. Make sure to download the user's manual from the Zonet web site. I have an HP 1100 LJ on the parallel and a Canon multifunction on USB1, printing from multiple WinXP boxes and some linux. No problems,

Cons: Installation documentation is the pits and initial setup can be tricky for computer newbies. Knowledge of TCP/IP required. Search the the Newegg reviews for this product for good install hints. Also, download the users manual from the Zonet site to get step by step instructions on setting up Win & Linux boxes to access the PS.

Other Thoughts: Once I set it up, it has worked like a charm.

Rating + 5 How to set print server IP

Pros: How to set print server IP?
_______________________

0. Attach printer server to network with RJ-45 and attach printer to USB1 port

1. Install Zonet Print Server Software (Orange CD) on an already networked computer.

2. MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF ALL FIREWALLS OR YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO DETECT THE PRINT SERVER ON YOUR NETWORK!

3. On the top panel, click on the NEW printer server.

4. Click on the Wizard Wand Icon -> TCP/IP.

5. Set printer server network configuration settings.

6. Install Printer software, if the Print installtion hangs during the installation waiting for USB, hit Esc Button.

7. Start -> Printers & Faxes -> Add new Printer.

8. You should see new printer driver for th, install.

9. Go back into the printer, ports -> add ports -> add the new ip for the printer.

10. Go to configure ports-> click on LPR->Queue Name: lp2 -> uncheck everything else.

Cons: none

Rating + 4 Nice but documentation lacks

Pros: I like the web interface. Note: This also has telnet access, which turned out to be very important for me! Serves three (2 USB + 1 LPT) printers. Can't beat that for the price!

Cons: The first thing I did was to set my laptop up with it through a switch, as I didn't have my crossover cable at home. Refer to earlier comments about the initial IP setting being 192.168.5.1. This isn't necessarily bad, but a complication.

Second thing I did was to set the password. This was a *giant* pain, after I couldn't log in through the web interface with that password. Looking at documentation shows you need to use "admin" as the username in the web authorization window. What I didn't see documented (and maybe it is) is that *you can only have an 8-character password*. So, my password was *always* incorrect.

Solution: You can telnet to the interface and type the password to get in. When it gave me the menu before I finished typing the password, I realized what happened. If you go to change the password from the telnet interface, it tells you a max of 8 characters.

So, just beware of the 8-character password rule, or you may spend hours trying to figure this out!

Other Thoughts: This was a long review. Just don't want anyone else to fall in this trap!

I love NewEgg.

Rating + 4 Good product

Comments: Good:
There are a lot of little extra features on this product that make it handy. It has the ability to join a workgroup and have sharenames for the printers, so that you just browse to the print server in Network Places and choose which printer to connect to, but you have to provide the driver yourself (obviously). Also supports most transmission protocols that are in existence and does it well. The interface is clean and self-explanatory and quite functional. I have an HP Laserjet 1200 connected via USB and it works marvelously. This PS seems to be quite reliable, I haven't had it reboot on me yet nor had to reboot the unit from non-response.

Bad:
The initial configuration can be a booger if you don't have a working knowledge of TCP/IP, especially IP subnets. This isn't really a fault of the unit, but more a user issue. I suppose a more user-friendly (and foolproof) method of changing the initial IP address could help alot.

Tips: You must initially place a computer connected directly to the print server to change the IP address on it to fit the rest of your home network. Using a straight through network cable, you simply connect the LAN port on the PS to your NIC port on your computer and manually set the computer NIC to 192.168.5.10 or something like that so that you are on the same subnet at the print server, which has a default IP address of 192.168.5.1 . Once you have done this, you can simply log into the web interface of the PS and configure all the networking configuration and device parameters you need to make it function on your network. Make sure the IP address you give your PS doesn't conflict with any others that you may already have on your network, then connect your PS to the switch or router and set your computer IP configuration back to its original configuration.

You should have a functional print server that will serve you well.

Hope this helps

Comments: One of my better purchases. Works well. As other reviews stated, the manuel is weak for set-up. Had to change router IP to 192.168.1.x to 192.168.5.x to enter print server set-up, then change the print server to my orig router IP, then change my router back to orig. Prints very fast. Using with Borther HL-1440, and Epson C86. The only issue is that my Brother MFC-4800, when connected to the parallel port of the server, scan feature would not work. So I still have it connected to the port on the computer.

Comments: As other reviewers have stated, make sure you have the firewall disabled before you start the installation. The installation manual that came with the unit was insufficient. It took me about 45 minutes to have everything working. I can connect both of my USB printers (Brother HL-1440 and Epson R200) to this print server, which is the main reason for this purchase. I have used this print server for a couple weeks now without any problem. Thank you to Newegg for fast shipping as well.

Comments: Easy to setup if you use the included cd/utility to first access the print server to set the password and change the ip address. Otherwise, you'll have to try to find the ip address, which is not the example address they use in the manual. Mine was set to 192.168.5.1. Use the utility, then use the web browser setup to tweak your settings.

Comments: Based on other's reviews, I actually read the instructions first for this unit! I just changed the IP address of the computer I was installing from to the 192.168.5.x segment used by the print server so I could get into it and change IT'S IP to work with my network segment of 192.168.1.x.

Comments: just as a side note to my previous review:

If you have any knowledge of networking (and bother to READ the instructions included with the server) you will know that a Parallel/LPT printer has to have the driver previously installed on each workstation/computer that will be using this server.

So basically, if you can't install something using the software, it boils down to not being able to follow (read) instructions....bummer! LOL

If one can: this is an excellent server!

Comments: This review isn't anyone's opinion but mine (notice that there aren't any intentionally misspelled words here). This server works just fine.

But the previous reviewer that said to ignore the instructions, one needs to use the included utilities to capture the printer(s) on the server port(s).

All in all, I am very happy with the product. And, the $xx.00 rebate that came with it made me all the more happier!!!

I just used this print server on the first network I have ever done professionally and it works great! I like that and my customer likes that! What more can I say...

Comments: http://www.zonetusa.com/DispProduct.asp?ProductID=125 This print server wasn't exactly plug and play, and it seems to have trouble recognizing my printer (HP Laserjet 1320) via parallel/LPT. However, USB seemed to work well. I'm using it on a network with Windows XP PCs as well as with a Mac (OS X Tiger). Easy to set up via Appletalk - no need for fiddling with TCP settings and all that (like for the PCs). Of course, YMMV.

Comments: The Print Server is in itself, a very simple idea. But, I guess having a really old printer doesn't help. Comments: Let me save you a little time. I spent a few hours on this. If you purchased an HP 1020 Laserjet from Newegg as I did, it will not work with this (or any other) print server. The HP 1020 is a "Host Based Printer." This means that printing is processed on the host PC and sent to the printer directly. Setup is ok. It helps to have some TCP/IP knowledge, but for the price you cant beat it.

Comments: Newegg delivered Great and Fast, But I had a problem and Zonet Technical Support was totally useless. Couldn’t connect to the server and sent them a detailed account of the problem but got answers showing that they never read the question, after third attempt they just said that since I said it was defective to fill out the paper work and try to send it back. Comments: this little puppy's got some spunk. thing took a little while to figure out, but after i got it, it's been working great. MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF ALL FIREWALLS OR YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO DETECT THE PRINT SERVER ON YOUR NETWORK!! <--that was my problem. this thing is pretty simple as long as you know a little but about networking. great little invention! NEWEGG ROCKS!!--keep it up!

Comments: Works great! On XP, you need to turn off the firewall to set it up, then you can turn it back on and you are golden.

Comments: This product is not easy to work with because their own PSAdmin utility does not recognize when the product is on line.

Comments: I bought this print server after having problems setting up two others. I also bought this one because we have two laser printers, both USB/Parallel. This one was incredibly easy to set up, and easy to set up computers with. Once you have the server set up (which is easy with the web admin feature), you can just "Add Printer" from Windows and locate your printer on the network. May purchase another in the coming months, and the price after rebate was great. Ordered Friday, came Monday. Thanks Newegg!
