Rating + 5 Easy and inconspicuous

Pros: Plug and play. Took me less than 5 minutes to have my printer recognized by all 8 PC's on my network. Queue management is seamless, and printing delays are non-existent. Unlike some printers (HP...) which have integrated LAN modules that constantly require attention, this server makes printing easy and efficient.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: A great investment for those of us that still have IEEE-1284 printers and want to keep using them.

Pros: Works well. Used to replace an onboard HP JetDirect that had failed. Kept the printer up and running for us.

Cons: It takes a bit longer to start the jobs and if you are processing large batches with multiple jobs this is an issue. Fortunatly this printer does not run many multiple job batches and we are going to live with the delay until a replacement printer can be ordered.

Rating + 5 TrendNet TE100-P1P

Pros: Installed it on a HP 5P Laser Jet, 2 Windows Vista computers, and on MAC OS 10.4 Laptop in less than an hour. Works great with rapid response. Wish they had one that is wireless.

Cons: The software didn't work to automatically install the printer. I had to go and find the IP and then apply a name to it using the software provided. It's probably a vista thing.
The software doesn't run on MAC. I had to guess that I needed the default protocol on the mac setup.
I had to trim the rear printer casing to install it.

Rating + 5 Great what I've been looking for

Pros: This thing great. if you can't set up this device using the software it came with it very easy. I used software to config IP address to match my range of IPs that my router use. Than used the software to setup the printer very easy took less then a min. Also I added the printer to my two other computers with out the software making an Ip port and work fine too.

Cons: none. for people that had issues with setting this up all I can say is I hope it was an issue with your printer not being compatible other wise your not reading setup info.

Pros: Purchased the print server on Tuesday and received it on Wednesday – excellent. I was using the HP JetDirect card for many years, but it finally died. So, looked at Newegg for a replacement and purchased the Trendnet . I am using Vista Business and found that the software was easy to install. I set the print server for DHCP and installed the printer drivers and was good to go. The whole process took about 15 minutes.

Cons: None at this time

Rating + 4 Won't fit Laserjet 6P unless...

Pros: Seems like a nice unit. It worked--finally.

Cons: When it arrived, I found that it is supposed to mount on the printer connector, but would not fit in the connector compartment of an HP LJ 6P. This was solved by a gender-changer, Centronics36F/DB25F. That allowed me to connect to the printer with a standard printer cable. Seems like that should be mentioned somewhere.

Other Thoughts: I tried their tech support to see if they offered such adapter, but they simply said "no", and no advice. The printserver device arrived a week ago, but I just got the gender-changer today.

Rating + 5 Happy with the buy!!

Pros: My setup:
DLS modem to Home Network Router.
NEC Superscript 870 connected to router via TRENDnet TE100-P1P
1 WinXP connected to router via network cable
1 WinVISTA connected to router via network cable
2 WinVISTA connected to router wirelessly

*Simple to setup (must set IP address different than network router). In my case, I changed it from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.10
*Did NOT require Install CD to install the printer
*All my computers were setup by going to Printer folder and select "Add Printer"
*Then select Add Network Printer
*Then select Add Printer by TCP/IP address, and punch in the new IP address (192.168.0.10)
*Then select Device Type as Network Print Server (1 Port - Parallel)
*Then select Printer Type to install Printer Driver
*and DONE

Setup on all 4 computers wired and wireless (XP and Vista) took less than 10 minutes including test prints.

(Small note, my NEC Superscript 870 does not have driver for Vista and I had to use a different driver, the HP L

Cons: Now that I have my old NEC Superscript 870 working thru this parallel print server, I may not want to upgrade to new printer...

Other Thoughts: I wish I bought this years ago. But because there isn't enough information about the ease of setup and if it will work with my legacy parallel port printer, I was hesitant.

But I am very happy with this purchase. Thank you!!

Pros: I have used these for years in a law office printing many documents. They seem to hold up well.

Cons: Difficult to install.
Note the picture here is wrong. These are not thin but fat with a bullnose front. I have to grind them to fit Xerox printers.

Other Thoughts: There are not many choices in print servers. Because they are all difficult many small bossiness have given up and just purchased printers for every workstation.

Rating + 4 It works

Pros: Recently replaced the old PC which my NEC SuperScript 870 laser printer was connected to. The new PC didn't have a serial port so I figured I'd pick up one of these since I was sharing the printer on the network anyways. It does everything it's supposed to. Print speed seems about the same as when it was connected to a parallel port on the computer.

Cons: The setup could have been a little more intuitive. The unit comes setup with the same IP address as most routers. 192.168.0.1 So I had to just hook up the printer server to a switch and my desktop so I could change the configuration to DHCP. I think TrendNet should have made DHCP the default or have picked a slightly less common IP.

Other Thoughts: No Vista driver exists for the NEC 870. However, when prompted for a driver, click Have Disk and insert an old Windows XP disk. The WinXP driver works perfect under Vista and this print server.

Rating + 4 Excellent Buy

Pros: Easy to install in my old LaserJet 5L. The utility was able to find the printer in my networ from 4 different computers running Win XP Pro SP2,3, MC and Vista Ultimate without problems, once I got throught the initial snag (see below). Now it works flawlessly.

Cons: It comes with a default IP address that conflicted with my router - in fact it was the same as my DSL modem... Luckily, the discovery utility was able to find the server and after some guess work (forget the "manual" that comes with it... it just tells you to plug the server in the printer and connect an ethernet cable - thank you very much for the help!), I was able to reset the IP address to DHCP.

Other Thoughts: Since you will set up your printer connected to the server in each computer as a network printer with an IP port, with a specific IP address, it is convenient to set your router to assign a static IP address to the server.

Pros: Paralell interface, modest price

Cons: It allows you to set an IP address for it that shouldn't exist, and once you apply the IP, it gets stuck forever. I set up a support ticket years ago with this problem, spoke to a few techs a few times, and here I am, 5 years later (literally) and it's just been sitting in my drawer waiting for a call-back from TRENDnet.

Other Thoughts: I'm sure it would have worked fine if it wasn't allowed to apply an IP to it that shouldn't have existed. Oh well.

Rating + 4 Does what it says

Pros: Bought this for a client that had a secretary short out a network interface on a HP Laserjet 4100N. Lttle cheaper than replacing the card (except for auction, but then you get what you pay for). I decided to give this a try as a possible future solution for some of my clients. Installation requireslittle knowledge of networking but enough to make some of my clients a little uncomfortable for a non-onsite install, thus the one egg deduction.

Cons: setup was a little sticky for your average user.

Rating + 5 Great Product

Pros: Many other manufacturers are dropping parallel printer support. Thank you TRENDnet for continuing to support my parallel printer! Great delivery from newegg.

Cons: Had to read the manual. Selecting local printer and port was counter intuitive.

Other Thoughts: Wish I had purchased the multi port product for Parallel and two serial. When my newegg video camera arrives I can do a review video. Works with Vista, my old print server did not. Stable, my previous one (other brand) dropped often.

Rating + 2 Didn't work for me

Pros: Web interface was nice to have despite the slightly awkward initial setup (defaults to 192.168.0.1, so you have to make sure your network can access that range).

Cons: Didn't work for my needs. I have an HP Laserjet 6L which was not recognized. It would claim the printer was online, but wouldn't print anything or list the model in the setup screen.

The size of the case is a little thick, so you may have problems fitting it on the back of some printers. Just make sure you have room.

User manual was not very helpful, so this is getting returned or sold to someone else.

Other Thoughts: In theory, this seemed like a good idea, but I'm a little surprised it wouldn't recognize my laserjet, considering it's a well known brand.

My initial impressions were positive though since it seemed like the web interface was ok and if it actually recognized the printer, would have been useful. That's why I went with a score of 2 and not 1. I wasn't able to find a list of supported printers anywhere though, so just be careful if you decide to pick this one up.

Rating + 5 Stable for me

Pros: Allows just about any parallel printer to be hooked up to a lan and, using Windows XP's built-in TCP-IP print settings print from the LAN to my HP Laserjet 4P (ol' trusty). I run a wrt54gl wireless router. I have the TRENDnet and main PC physically hooked up LAN-side and connect to the router with my laptop to print. It works beautifully. I have the printer off most of the time, print from the laptop, walk upstairs to the printer, turn it on, and -blurp-, out comes the document.
It has been running without issue for 4 months.

Cons: I think the forty-three clams is a bit steep for what it does. Then again, I'm cheap, erm, frugal. It really has been amazingly stable.

Other Thoughts: If you already HAVE a wireless router and a printer you're happy with, buy THIS INSTEAD of a new wireless printer or a wireless print server. As long as your main pc and printer are near each other or can reach with a patch cable, you're set.

Rating + 5 Works Great

Pros: Easy to use, and does what it says. Helped "save" an old parallel port printer from the graveyard.

Cons: The printed instruction manual is not the greatest, but the one included on the CD is better, and provides more detail.

Other Thoughts: This is not that hard to use or setup. I had it installed on my home network in about 45 min. Should have taken about 25 min, but I did not read the manual first. I run a mixed network, Win Vista, Win XP, and Linux (Ubuntu 8.04) and it was a snap setting the printer up on all 3 of the computers. Would buy another in the future if needed!!

Pros: This product does what it says. It is great, and has brought new life to an old parallel printer. not hard to setup.

Would order another

Cons: Printed manual is not that great, but the one on the CD is better.

Other Thoughts: This is not hard to setup. I know that some reviewers have had issues, but this is pretty easy to setup. It took me about 20 min, should have taken about 10.

Rating + 5 Works perfectly X 3

Pros: I bought 3 of these to network our "older" printers in our office and they all work perfectly with no issues. I have one attached to an old HPLJ6M, HPDeskJet1220C and HPDesignJet500 inkjet-plotter. I'm sure I'll be buying some more of these soon.

Cons: If you don't know how to setup IP printing, you shouldn't bother with this (or any) network printer server, or at least educate yourself on IP printing. Yes, the setup wizard and documentation is sub-standard, but you don't need either, if you have minimal networking skills.

Other Thoughts: Someone had mentioned that they don't work for DesignJets or plotters. I have one working perfectly on a HPDesignJet 500.
I can't speak for compatibility of other manufacturers though. Don't forget to set the "port name".

Rating + 2 Bad documentation Bad software

Pros: I can't think of any.

Cons: Sometime the wizard cannot find the print server, much less the printer it's attached to. I cannot get the internet configurator to work at all. One time the setup wizard found the print server and added the printer, but then all setups disappeared, and now it can't find anything. It also would be helpful if the actual setup could be followed during the installation.

Other Thoughts: Redo the documentation. If there are printers that will not work with this print server, the customer should forwarned. I wish I had spent a little more and purchased a netgearp10. It would have worked without the frustration.

Pros: Plug in to the printer and network, power on, set the network up, and go. Pretty easy. Works with my old HP Deskjet 712C and lets me keep it in the closet, out of the way.

Cons: A little on the slow side when printing, but nothing extreme.

Rating + 4 Nice little device

Pros: Setup was fairly painless right out of the box, it even went mostly by the directions for me. Easily fit on my printers.

Cons: As noted before, directions are pathetic at best, though this isn't a difficult setup. Having the transformer at the plug is a real pain as well - more so that it stands straight out, not 90 degrees like most.

Other Thoughts: I was unfortunate enough to find out that there is only one mfg. out there that can be used with Can0n printers...if you have one, do your research

Rating + 2 Troubles

Pros: Looks like it should work. Gets quickly recognized on the network until you try to install the printer.

Cons: I've tried installing this on a Win 2003 network 3 times now and no go. Configured it with parallel port (which may be the issue) in XP and Vista Workstations -- my HP 1320 printer wouldn't recognize (in Vista) and wouldn't stay recognized in XP or Win2003. Prob worked fine in NT or Win 2000 environment.

Other Thoughts: If your printer is not standard fare in XP (and Vista), be wary of these kind of devices.

Rating + 4 Works but nothin fancy

Pros: It has worked for over 2 years with my deskjet and not one problem. Prints fine from all my computers, has survived power surges, and no extra software required to use.

Cons: Nothing fancy here. Menus are plain and lack a help feature. The major thing is you can't turn off the Netware section so IPX packets flood your network (well not flood but they are sent out like every 20 seconds or so which is annoying).

Other Thoughts: Manual is nothing to write about. :) In the end, after reading other reviews for other products, I would buy this print server again.

Rating + 4 Little finicky

Pros: -Functions as an abstraction layer, no special software needed.
-Compact

Cons: -Finicky setup
-Designed to attach directly to a printer's parallel port; would be more convenient if it had the standard computer-side parallel port.
-Power brick is AWFUL, would have been better as an inline adapter instead of a wallwart.

Other Thoughts: Setup is a little tricky. You have to wait a few seconds between updating settings, so the print server itself can update internally. Once you get to the web interface, it's smooth sailing.

Rating + 3 HP Laserjet 5p

Pros: It came very quickly thanks to Newegg. The PC setup was fairly easy by using the management utility that came with it.

Cons: The Mac support is terrible. I can't get it to work with my Laserjet 5P because it claims the printer doesn't support post script. It's an older HP Laserjet, of course it supports PS printing! Ironically, I have it printing with a PS driver under windows.

Trendnet tech support is horrible. By default it has a STATIC IP address assigned to it which can be VERY frustrating when dealing with a router that does DHCP. Took me 10 minutes once I figured this out. I plugged it into another switch I had.

Other Thoughts: It's not bad. Trendnet should better support their products though.

Rating + 3 Not all I read

Comments: After a lot of load delete and reboots, I finally got it to work. I expect it has something to do with the printer I'm networking. It is a Konica 1350W laser and I believe it is a postscipt (can't find anything in the documentation). Anyway the features of the RJ45, i.e. test printing, etc. would cause a print error and hang my system. Once I figured it out, it works fine. It would have been nice if that was noted in the user manual. The only comment in the manual is 'if you have a postscript printer, the settings will not print when you press the rest button.'

Comments: I had an older Trendnet model that was discontinued, but I need to buy several units in order to put all of the inkjet printers on the network here at work. I bought one of these just to try it out and they work well. They work on small laserjet and deskjet printers. They do not work on DesignJets or plotters. Also, The case can be kind of bulky, as I installed this one on a LaserJet 5p, the port is recessed somewhat, so I had to cut away at the printer casing, but it works well.
