Rating + 5 Asus EEE PC

Pros: Bought this for our vacations, got tired of trying to find a computer to check my email. Also it comes with Skype so telephoning home will be inexpensive and easy. Its size and weight, the fact it runs Linux so viruses are not a big concern are all positives. Internet browsing is done on Mozilla firefox.

Cons: Small screen and keyboard.

Other Thoughts: Its not going to replace your laptop but for email, skype, internet access while on vacation it is hard to beat.

Rating + 3 had to RMA still exp. mouse issues

Pros: Size is a perfect fit, performs well, even get compiz fusion working in Ubuntu.

Cons: Had to RMA the unit at least once, experiencing mouse issues and may have to RMA a second time but I haven't narrowed down if it's a driver/kernel or a hardware issue but apparently mouse issues are common, so buyer beware.

Other Thoughts: I have tried Slackware, Arch, Ubuntu, and Ubuntu Eee (which seems to work the best.

Rating + 5 Great Secondary Laptop

Pros: Well, i just got my EEPC 4g 2 days ago and i couldnt be happier with it. I was worried at first buying such an inexpensive laptop, also by the fact that i had never even seen a linux OS before. Its Fast (full boot in 10-15seconds), its easy to use i love the linux, and the wifi works great. Its really small, but very very sturdy doesnt rattle and feels solid. Props to asus for this one.

Cons: I wouldnt use this as my only computer. the best use for this computer is for a travel laptop that you can surf the web, write documents, and manage emails, or use it like an Ipod with music and video. If you want to do more then you'll probably want to invest in a larger laptop.
I will definatly be taking this with me on all my trips from now on. My XPS weighs 9lbs and is too massive to fit in a backpack. This thing ways 2lbs max and i could almost fit it in a pocket.

Other Thoughts: This is an awesome bang for the buck. I would recomend this to anyone. Also the 4gig memory isnt too small at all. I just carry a flash USB that holds all my documents and pop it in when i need to access them.

Rating + 5 Excellent for beginners, and also for pros

Pros: I adore this little machine. I have been waiting for years for someone to make a durable miniature laptop like this one. The keyboard is somewhat cramped, but it is definitely of the same quality as any other notebook on the market. The quality of sound through earphones is very good. Videos from the internet run very smoothly. The quality of the webcam image is quite disappointing. They need to have options to change the color of the picture to adapt to yellow incandescent lighting.

Cons: The standard Xandros linux is pretty limited. It's designed to make the Eeepc an easy to use internet/word processing appliance for novice computer users. There are great tips and help in the forums at eeeuser.com - among these is an easy upgrade, to where you get to use a different graphics layout which is more like what windows users are used to - KDE. It's well worth getting the XP version of this machine if you aren't at all familiar with Linux, and you want to spread your wings a little bit. There seems to be a very common defect in the SDHC card reader. Mine generally reads large files without a problem, but will corrupt data when attempting to write large files to the card. I sent my eeepc back back to the asus service center because of this, and they sent back an unopened new machine, with exactly the same defect.

Other Thoughts: I installed WNOP puppy linux on it with beryl/compiz, and, after some mods which others on the puppy linux forum had figured out, it runs like a dream. I bought an extra 10400 mAh oversize battery from hong kong, and that runs the machine for 4½ hours. I'm pining after a touch screen overlay made for the eeepc that can be bought for about $80usd. We'll see about that.

Rating + 5 Wonderful

Pros: Absolutely wonderful. I work in IT, and use Linux almost exclusively (save for one Solaris desktop and a few more arcane OSs). This is a great computer - relatively fast for moderate work (terminal, browser, network tools, etc.). Best of all, it's TINY. I can throw the eeePC, charger, and a complement of cables in a bag and carry it anywhere without even noticing it. It's also a godsend for work in the data center or wiring closet - it's barely larger than a Fluke tool and does everything - tiny, balances in one hand, and easy to balance between equipment.

Cons: Xandros. It's awful. I installed my distro of choice (OpenSuSE, pretty straightforward install following one of the many online tutorials) on an 8GB SDHC card. It now boots from the SD card, no performance decrease at all (since the internal storage is also SD), and the internal disk is unchanged, so if I ever want to sell it, I just pop out the SDHC card and it's back to factory.

Other Thoughts: Whether you're a student and want something light and small to take to class, or work in IT and want a *great* little machine for field work, or anything else, it can't be beat. As long as you buy an SDHC card and use something other than the default Xandros (there's even eeeBuntu, an Ubuntu image ready to run).

Pros: Small enough to fit in any of my purses or bags, but does everything I'd want a full-sized laptop to do. Battery life is decent and the power brick is tiny so it's no trouble to carry it with you.

Cons: The stock operating system looks like it was made for small children.

Other Thoughts: I've paired this with a Logitech Nano wireless mouse and it's perfect. I almost never leave the house without it.

Rating + 5 Watch Out Jackie Chan

Pros: As a 'mobile internet device', it's a dream. Connects to any wireless effortlessly, fits in my purse, and takes the subsequent abuse well. It also fits on the corner of my desk when tinkering with my desktop. As a work machine on the go, it preforms equally well. I had no trouble adjusting to touch typing on the keyboard after thirty min or so, and I found that I can hold the computer with one hand and type with the other while walking around. All the apps are there, along with a few nifty ones you might not expect to use. The function plotter has been a lifesaver for my Calc 2 class. It boots up and shuts down insanely fast, and I find myself picking it up when I need to look up something quick on the internet, rather than boot up my main comp.

Cons: I find that running more than two applications clutters up the screen so much that it's no longer usable. It's great for traveling or taking to school, but I wouldn't do any real work on it. I haven't had any issues with the battery yet as I'm always near a plug, but I can see where that could be a problem.

Other Thoughts: As an added bonus, this little computer can double as a self-defense device in case of mugging. Although, such use is not recommended by the manufacturer and will probably void your warranty.

Rating + 5 Nice little computer!

Pros: Very portable, efficient, and sleek looking. Decent power for its size and price point. Extremely light as well. Runs very quickly when loaded with an efficient OS (such as xUbuntu).

Cons: The small keyboard (especially the spacebar) has trouble registering keystrokes at times. I knew the screen size before I bought it, but the resolution could be better for the size. 1024x600 or so could be fit into a 7" screen.

Other Thoughts: Mine came with a defect on the LCD screen with a small cluster of dead pixels, but I don't consider the problem bad enough to warrant an RMA yet. If it gets worse, I might change my mind.

Rating + 5 Performs as advertised

Pros: It is what it says it is and does what it says it does. I installed a different Linux OS (didn't care for that "kiddy toy" look with Xandros) and configured it to my taste. Set up compiz, overclocking, and a VMWare virtual Win XP machine, all on a SDHC card. Added a 2GB SO-DIMM (also from Newegg). It's been running 6 weeks trouble free. The neighbors are still in awe of it!

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: You gotta understand what it is before you buy it: a very small, very cheap sub-notebook that runs hot, has a miniature keyboard, tinny little speakers, and a tiny screen, that lasts about 2 hours on the OEM battery. Don't plan on composing a symphony or writing your next novel on this -- it's not up to that kind of use.

Pros: Nice little machine. Purchased for my 5 year old daughter, specifically with the Linux distro. She's having a wonderful time with it. Plugged in a Logitech mouse, no driver install, worked instantly, plugged in an old 15" lcd, works fine @ 1024x768. Were I so inclined, the unit is plenty capable for me to actually do real work off of with OpenOffice, Thunderbird and Firefox, as well as image editing and and IM. Most importantly, it's easy for her to navigate, pull her pictures off her sd card and play with them, and there are a handful of programs, drawing, hangman etc, that she can easily find and play with. Battery life seems very good, only down to 80% after an hours play.

Cons: Can't really think of any other than the lack of an optical drive, but there are 3 usb ports, ethernet and wi-fi so that's not really an issue here on the network.

Other Thoughts: Quite a unit for the price.

Pros: Very affordable, very portable, and very cute!

Everything works out of the box. I was having video chats over Skype within twenty minutes of getting the package.

It is absolutely silent most of the time. When it is working hard (e.g. during video chat) it turns on a little fan and makes an adorable humming noise.

Cons: Yes, the keyboard is small, so if you have large hands or like space, you may find it lacking.
The screen resolution is also very limited and takes some getting used to, but overall it doesn't detract from the experience. Everything is quite usable.

Other Thoughts: A great purchase to replace an old, heavy laptop. I don't regret it one bit.

Rating + 5 Great product

Pros: Great little product! I'm still getting used to the fact that it's a REAL computer. Very pleased.

Cons: Linux is good, but more complicated than windows IMHO. Because of that, it's important to go to the EEE user forum which is extremely helpful. Also, and this is important, when you make mistakes with Linux, repeatedly press the F9 key at boot up, and everything gets fixed good as new. The F9 key is your best friend when first getting acquainted with Linux.

Other Thoughts: What a remarkable little machine. Wow!

Rating + 5 A complete PC

Pros: I've had my 701 for about 3 months now. The most amazing thing is that since my desktop pc has died, tethering my 701 to a monitor/kbd/mouse, it works just fine as a desktop. This little thing is a real amazing piece of equipment. I cant wait for the 900 Atom version. regardless, i got that 8-cell battery online and that rocks the 701 for 7 hours. and total weight is still under 3 lbs. how much does that rock?

Cons: Well, nothing really. The default included battery still rocks for 3.5 hrs, theres no room to complain.

Pros: Sturdy case. Comes in black! A real eye-catcher. I am using it in my car as a GPS and OBD-II system (which also has Internet and plays music in the car too). The on-board speakers have good sound quality. The AC charger cord is really nice and long.

Cons: The little bag that comes with it is flimsy, and is best for long-term storage protection of the unit, not so much for day-to-day carrying.

Other Thoughts: Get a good bag for it. HINT: Portable DVD player bags are PERFECT for this laptop. Some people seem to think that there's only a single mouse button on the touch pad, however, this is not the case. The touchpad button has a left and right sensor underneath it; it's sensitive to which side of the button you push.

Rating + 5 Great little UMPX

Pros: This little item arrived within three business days of placing the order. I am used to Linux operating systems and must say that I am impressed with the Easy Desktop (default) mode. I that Xandros OS like most Linux distros is fairly easy to tweak. The screen is bright and clear with no pixel issues of any kind. While the keyboard is small I got used to it within a couple of days. I have average size hands. The battery lasts about 3 hours perhaps a little more with the kind of usage that I give it. It boots and shuts down very quickly.

Cons: There will be a small learning curve for windows users that have never seen Linux before. Asus has done a great job of simplifying the computing experience and new users should adapt quickly. Because this little gem is so small and runs an Intel mobile processor it does run a fuzzy bit warmer than most.

Other Thoughts: I really enjoy this little jewel. It is fun to use, meets my every day needs. It is very easy to carry with me wherever I go. People who wish to use windows may install a copy of Windows XP (follow the instructions in the manual) or purchase one of the newer 701 models that come with Windows XP pre-installed.

Pros: Size, ease, good and getting better support on eeeuser.com,operates quick. Engineered well. Just the right combinations of hardware and software for what I wanted.

Cons: slightly difficult keyboard

Other Thoughts: Not a great main work machine. But a corolla is not a good pickup either. Great for carrying around or on trips for simple work. I didn't get it to load it up so my Galaxy will remain out of the box. Don't know much about linux but I got by with a little help from my friends

Pros: The Eee PC is a great miniature laptop and the included version of linux works extremely well. The battery life is pretty good, the screen is excellent (I have played some movies and they look good) and on the 701 series the sound is excellent for the size of the device.

Cons: The wireless setup in the linux that is included is a bit iffy. A lot of times you have to manually connect to networks, which might take 15 minutes. The placement of the shift key is also a problem, but I fixed that by switching shift with the up arrow key (instructions on eeeuser.com).

Other Thoughts: I may upgrade the RAM and possibly the hard drive (if that is possible) before taking it abroad. Otherwise it is a great notebook and it is fun to have people walk by and say "Is that a laptop?".

Pros: Everything works out of the box -- zero problems. For the price, it is a heck of a computer!

Cons: Not a "con", but you need to study this product in advance and dial down your expectations to match its capabilities. It is what it is, and nothing more.

Other Thoughts: One look at those "kiddie-toy" icons, and I installed sidux Linux on mine. No offense to Asus or Xandros, but ....

To improve the performance, I immediately installed a Crucial 2GB SO-DIMM and a Patriot 16GB SDHC card, which I made "permanent" by formatting it to ext3 and mounting automatically on bootup of the Linux OS.

Pros: this laptop is a great package for what it is ment fore the wireless net works great the OS works fine very fast. plays almost all media formats i throw at it. outstanding battery life almost 5 hours if used correctly. have had not problems with it what so ever.

Cons: the only cons are pretty universal through what i have read. the keyboard is a little cramped but they did fit it in a 8in frame. and the touch pad buttons are a little rough on operation but you can fix that in the settings by tweeking the duble tap on the pad

Other Thoughts: 2 x 8800gts in sli, m2n sli premium, amd 5000 clocked at 3 gigs, 4 gigs 800 ram, 150gig raptor, 2 x 250 wd drives, zelmen 9500 cooler in an antec 900 case.

Rating + 5 Awesome little PC

Pros: Amazing tiny computer to browse the web, check email, and even chat, along with word processing and great wireless connectivity. I'm reakky amazed with this computer, so fast, so responsive and the Xandros (Linux dist) is great for starters in the linux world, very intuitive interface. Very portable, you'll be amazed with the size of this wonderful unit. I'm a windows guy, but with this beauty in my hands I'll be forced to learn linux on a fast pace way ! Way to go ASUS !

Cons: Tiny keyboard and not as responsive as full size keyboard in my Sony VAIO.

Other Thoughts: If you are a first time linux user, this is the pc you need ! Lots of info, forums, hacks and more currently in the Internet, I can't wait to install all the hacks and mods I have found on the Internet.

Rating + 5 The little lappy that could

Pros: I have a pocket in my coat that this thing lives in. I installed eeeXubuntu on it no problem, I regularly use this at work running a couple windows of Firefox and several terminals, it multitasks just fine, I use the wifi all the time, it's basically just awesome. The speakers are surprisingly good for a laptop like this, probably better than my Dell laptop, but not as good as the HP multimedia laptop I have. I actually prefer the tiny eee keyboard to that of many larger notebooks.

Cons: First one was a dud, Asus sent me a complete new one in the box a couple days later. Screen is a bit small on this one, luckily the 900 has fixed that. The wifi doesn't pick up quite as much as my Dell laptop (probably to save battery). Doesn't support a cellular card. Having a hard time thinking of real cons..

Other Thoughts: If the 7" screen bugs you, get the 900 when it comes out, I know I will. Otherwise, this is a awesome box. You can also plug it into an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse and you have a mini desktop you can take with you.

Pros: 1. Does everything. 2. Uses linux. 3. Really portable. 3. Telephoning with Skype was actually easy and the speakers are good enough for clear communication. 4. Unusually fast for the cpu speed. 5. Lots of OS options as seen on YouTube. 6. It had more of a WOW factor than I anticipated. People I showed it to were impressed. 7. It is easy to use. I had to tell most people who saw it that it was linux! I could go on..

Cons: For who I bought it for I don't see any. She has small hands since she is ten years old:-)

Other Thoughts: Her Mother will find it useful because of the office suite.

Rating + 5 Excellent UMPC replacement

Pros: Physical features, its small, light, and very durable. The Linux OS preloaded on here boots very quickly. All the software you will probably need(for what the laptop is intended for) comes preinstalled. Video playback is great.

Cons: Battery life shorter than advertised, in fact quite a noticeable drop, so drop the brightness down 30-40% to get 3 hours in. Installing new apps is challenging, the system is picky about what will work on it. The screen doesn't fill up the whole space.

Other Thoughts: Do not let gaming influence your purchase, even if other users tell you that you can play *your favorite game* on it. I haven't used Linux in forever and it took me forever to get any games working on this machine. If you really want games, get the XP version, but Linux is fine for me.

Rating + 5 excellent little Linux laptop

Pros: Light weight and nice design (looks great in black), runs quiet and cool, internal camera works great for Skype, solid-state disk. Runs Ubuntu Linux just fine, with some minor configuration changes that are well-documented online. Tiny power adapter is a definite plus.

Cons: I wasn't too fond of the default (Xandros) distribution, but at least I didn't have to pay for a worthless Windows license. For most users, the default will work great (especially if they get Skype v3 installed). Battery life is so-so, but definitely acceptable.

Other Thoughts: This is an excellent little laptop for checking email, writing, traveling, etc. Asus did a great job with ascetics, integration, and even the printed manuals.

Rating + 2 Unexpected problems

Pros: After the first few months - very excited. Loaded XP and had lots of fun. I wrote the Mobile and Inexpensive review. The EEE worked great for four months and then the SSD suddenly died. I turned on the power and nothing happened. Fortunately, the ASUS warranty service is excellent. Good thing I did not void my warranty after upgrading RAM!

Cons: People may be wrong about good SSD life, because write leveling may have nowhere to cycle on an almost full SSD. The same free blocks (512KB size) may be written repeatedly (math example is 15 IOPS, 10,000 erase cycles -> expected failure is #n free blocks * 11.1 minutes). In four months, it appears XP reached this limit on my EEE. I could be wrong but ASUS made a proprietary SSD so anything is possible.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully the improved SSD controllers will extend life on the latest 8G EEEs - where it is also easier to replace the SSD. The 900 should be a great improvement so I hope to upgrade when NewEgg gets it in stock.

Rating + 5 Love at Delivery

Pros: This laptop is extremely tiny. It makes very little noise, unless you've been using it for awhile, then it starts a little whirring. I can take it anywhere I would need a computer. The startup time is amazingly fast. Despite other reviews about its small keyboard and screen, they are easy to get used to and accept, just like the OS and interface.

Cons: The extremely limited capacity of the hard drive. This hasn't hurt me yet, as I haven't even put anything on it, but seeing only 1.5 GB left to me right off the bat is kind of a downer. The touchpad also seems a little sensitive but I think I can fix that in my settings.

Other Thoughts: It is small, affordable, and easy to use. It can get annoying feeling like a giant but it definitely serves the purpose of being the web-browsing, paper-typing, e-mailing school machine that I needed.

Rating + 5 Amazing little gadget

Pros: The Eee PC was quite "quick on its feet" when I put it through its tasks. The display is sharp and very readable. The speakers are not perfect but for the size I consider them good quality. The voice command works quite well. Webcam quality is very good, but the fps are around 7.5.

Cons: Would not write a novel on this thing. The keyboard is cramped, but you can still type normally but very closely. Gets a tad warm. (not burning) The fan can be annoying after awhile. But is normally quiet.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend using this for light computer work on the road. Buy a fold-able keyboard for comfortable typing.

Rating + 4 Could use improvement, but it's pretty good

Pros: It's cute.
It's a great internet appliance.
Sound quality is acceptable.
Everything just works (the wonders of preinstalled instead of do-it-yourself Linux).
Pretty solid build with one exception.
7" screen is actually usable.
RAM is easily upgradeable.

Cons: Keys are cheap plastic.
Key placement of right Shift key and numeral 1 aren't consistent with regular QWERTY.
Mouse buttons and Control key need to be pressed hard to respond.
Battery life isn't optimal.
Security is terrible (sudo with no password prompt?).

Other Thoughts: You'll see a lot of pros and cons in reviews (mine included). The pros definitely outweigh the cons, and no matter how many YouTube videos and photos you see of it online, you will be wowed by how small and attractive the Eee is when you see it in person.

Warning: if you require a laptop with a DVD burner, a large screen, gaming-capable graphics card, fast processor, and large hard drive, you should purchase a laptop, not a netbook/ultramobile PC.

Rating + 5 Great Travel PC

Pros: Very good price and versatile for something so small. No power brick, light, and fast with its SSD.

Cons: screen and keyboard might be small for some. Those new to linux might cringe a bit but asus has xp drivers and other linux version out there. Space, I recommend dropping for the 8 gb versions if you got the cash. Great support community overall.

Other Thoughts: Know what your getting into, this laptop is perfect for me for what I need. A small laptop that doesn't weigh a ton that can browse web, type notes, chat, and listen to music all on the go. Those wondering about the video capabilities, it can play youtube flash and similar online videos fairly well but rendering of fancier stuff might stutter. I'd go with a fancier laptop if you want to watch videos or dvds.

Rating + 4 The Good, The Bad, and the...

Pros: Small form, easy to use interface, price is reasonable. I found the default interface somewhat dumbed down since I'm an avid Linux user. I also didn't like the fact that I was unable to add software easily. I switched the desktop to "advanced" mode which is just a normal Linux desktop and added some xandros repositories so I could install latex and a few other applications.

Cons: Keyboard is too small for touch typing and the screen doesn't fill up the lid, so you feel like they didn't give you largest screen possible.

Other Thoughts: It's a nice sub-notebook for those who don't need a full laptop. However, don't expect this to fill all your needs, unless you plug it into an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse when not on the go.

Rating + 5 Nice...

Pros: Small... Portable... Versitile(sp?)

Fast... Just works. Screen is good quaility. speakers are acceptable considering. Keyboard is small but well thought out so even larger hands/fingers can get used to it.

Cons: Battery life... Screen resolution... Trackpad button

Seems everytime i pull it out the battery is dead on it. The charger is a little second rate and it takes a good while to charge it full battery (2+ hours).

Other Thoughts: I upgraded mine to xp and 2gb ram. Runs plenty fast but not super fast. The screen size is acceptable but the resolution is so low that a lot of webpages and programs don't play well with it. There are some methods to change this but i've not ventured down that road. I bought a USB Verizion broadband card for it. I keep in my truck all the time and it works well. Car adapter is going to be a nessesary accessory however. Overall it's a very good computer and it just works.

Pros: Really portable. Bounces well. Integral webcam seems pretty good, actually. Fast boot, highly reliable.

Cons: Takes a week to get used to the tiny keyboard. Display is a little small.

Other Thoughts: Get a media card for storage. It's worth it.

Since getting this, I have become a highly impatient user of computers - the eee's boot and program load times have spoiled me.

Rating + 5 Spectacular!!!!!

Pros: Light and small and just as capable as a big laptop for surfing the web and email. Great for downloading if you get an SD card for additional storage. Better suited for XP than the Linux that comes on it. With nLite and good know how, XP can be installed with all critical updates, and I even have Office 2000 and Photo Impression and KompoZer and quite a few other things, and still have 1.49 gigs free on the solid state drive. Got a 4 gig SD just in case I need it. 512 RAM is plenty sufficient if you know how to optimize your processes.

Cons: None really if you use this for what it is intended for. Well, it'd be nice if replacement batteries were available immediately and at a reasonable price.

Other Thoughts: This little marvel has replaced my Fujitsu B2131 machines as my traveling companion. When I'm at the airports, I just laugh and laugh at all the 8 to 10 pound "clunkers" I see people lugging around. I put the Eee PC into a DVD case along with the power supply, some thumb drives, and a USB wireless adapter just in case. Makes for a very tiny package that still lets you surf and check email and download just as good as the larger machines.

Rating + 5 Great Lil Notebook

Pros: Great display, runs Compiz 3D desktop effects and OpenArena flawlessly and fast! Battery lasts +/-2 hours during average use. Small keyboard counts as a pro because they did it right. It seems like it'd be tough to get used to, but I actually find myself over-compensating and keeping my fingers too close. Whole unit plus accessories fits in just about any carrying case with room to spare. EXTREMELY silent. You'll never hear a quieter computer. You'll never hear it period.

Cons: Pre-installed, watered-down Xandros is uncustomizable and difficult to get to non-factory installed programs. You need to open a terminal and execute the program name to start anything that isn't in the desktop menu system. That OS lasted a little under two hours before it was wiped and replaced with Ubuntu & Ubuntu's EEE tweaks. Wireless works, Compiz 3D desktop effects work, all Fn keys work. Screen is obviously quite small. No CD drive, but USB bootable, so you can install any OS that can boot from a USB drive. 4GB drive can get a bit cramped. You'll probably want to dedicate that mostly to OS and software, and get a decent size USB flash drive or even small portable hard drive for documents/media. But so far no devastating, deal-breaking cons.

Other Thoughts: Quite pleased with this so far. Great for anything from a kid's first notebook all the way up to Grandma and Grandpa's vacation computer. Asus made a terrific build with the Eeepc, and I'll definitely be looking into their hardware as I spec my new desktop. And all from Newegg, of course!

Rating + 5 Outstanding!

Pros: Small and light weight. Powerful enough for almost all typical tasks you ever could use a laptop for. So much support on various operating systems and hacks. I installed eeeXubuntu onto it and am much more impressed now, than with the original Xandros distribution. And again, just SO much support for things like that. Not many people mention the case thing that comes with it. Nothing spectacular, but at least it comes with one.

Cons: I am not unhappy with the battery life, but it could have been better. Can get rather warm on the keyboard and bottom, but certainly not the worse I have ever seen. Keyboard is small, but thats what I expected. Same with the track pad, but learn some keyboard shortcuts and you'll be much happier. Occasionally but not often, the small screen size can be a slight issue but have never had a serious problem with it.

Other Thoughts: I took a long time to decide to get this little device but am so happy I finally purchased it. I could not be happier. I am a heavy computer user so I have my nice desktop that I use for most everything. I didnt have a real need for a full size laptop and I am ALL about portability. The EEE certainly fits that bill. I do not want to lug around 4 extra pounds of weight I dont need or use. Linux works great on it. I use Ubuntu on my desktop so it was nice to stick with the same thing. Just as long as you know what you are gettnig into, you will be very happy with it.

Pros: I like that I can bring this around with me in my backpack, hardly feel the weight. Pretty long battery life.

Cons: Its all been said: small screen, small hard drive, quirky sound issues after installing XP. It takes a long time to charge, but the power brick is quite small. If the computer is on and charging, it may only go ~20% more batt life in a couple hours. I would wait to get the big screen version then buying this one now.

Other Thoughts: Get a 16gb SD card for extra storage, or a usb powered external hard drive.

Cons: Odd screen resolution, but so is the PSP 480x272,so no big deal.

To power users, this is a dream machine, you can milk it for all its worth. To regular consumers, its a fun little laptop, but no desktop replacement.Know what you are doing, and this will be a very powerful, very flexible laptop.

Rating + 5 Great Machine

Pros: An excellent machine for an excellent price. Others have given details. For me the portability is key as is the ability to connect a projector to it at 1024x768 resolution. All in all it is useful for the novice and a lot of fun for the more expert to play with -- and do any serious work that does not involve tons of typing. Kudos to NewEgg. The price was right and the delivery fast.

Cons: Take these in context, I love the machine. But the operating system is awful. It is neither fish nor fowl. The "mouse" key is sometimes not responsive without *really* clicking on it. The touch screen also needs a heavy touch at times. The keyboard needs a two-finger approach. But all these are nitpicks, not serious.

Other Thoughts: I seriously think that new programs and new linux distros tuned for the eeePC will appear. They would be really appreciated.

Rating + 5 the coolest device ever

Pros: to many to mention. it is exactly what i thought it was. installed xp from external disk drive with no problems and loaded xp drivers from disk. up and running in no time. I was worried about the small screen being unreadable but its all good. the screen resolution is crisp and everything is very readable and looks great. i even got some 3d games running on this thing!

Cons: 4gb SSD is fast but small. had to do some tweaking for xp to run comfortably. Must have at least an 8gb SDHC to get any real enjoyment outta this thing. I got the 16gb and im smooth sailin

Other Thoughts: This is truly a revolutionary device. Everything you could expect and more out of a package this small.

Only suggestion i would make is to wait for the 9xx series coming out soon for a hundred dollars more. bigger screen bigger hard drive, more ram. Personally, I couldnt wait so i got this one

Pros: A fully functional computer in a tiny package. Works just like a full-size laptop.

Cons: None, unless you think the keyboard is too small, in which case you just don't get it.

Other Thoughts: Lugging my full-size laptop is annoying. With this tiny thing, I can carry it anywhere, plus it works great. My friends see it and either love it or hate it -- there's no in between. If you're writing the Great American Novel, you will need an external keyboard. If you're sitting in Starbucks surfing the web or instant messaging, this is perfect.

Rating + 4 Great for an ultra-portable

Pros: Great portability. Highly recommend the EeeUser website for advice to tackle common issues with the laptop. The advanced mode desktop can help people more familar with XP get extra functionality. The default basic desktop is ideal for anyone who does not have a lot of technical skill. Neoprene carrying case is a nice item, and lets me safely place the laptop in my backpack. The fan is very quiet, and I can't hear the monitor buzz that others report.

Cons: Small 7" screen is tolerable to me, but isn't for everyone. Smaller than normal keys, and an oddly placed right shift will take some time to adapt to. Spacebar is slightly warped but does not impact functionality. Touchpad has some quirks, but I have not adjusted the settings for it yet.

Other Thoughts: VGA output and three usb ports means you can easily turn this into a kiosk/terminal. Tested with a USB keyboard/mouse and a monitor set at 1024x768. Highly recommend the 1GB ram Newegg recommends. Be careful with the panel on the bottom, one of the screws may be under the EeePC sticker. The panel might seem it is stuck halfway when pulling, as there are two plastic tabs holding the panel down. Just be gentle and you can pull it off.

Rating + 5 Great little PC

Pros: It is what it is. I bought this to carry when I travel. It's VERY small and light, and it provides all of the essentials. Wireless connects easily at public hotspots, although I had some WEP-related issues connecting at home. Personally, I like the simple interface even though I go all the way back to the CP/M days. Also, it's great that this uses open source. It might be possible to use this as your only machine, if you added "full-size" usb peripherals.

Cons: The keyboard is a bit tight, but is usable. WEP is a bit of a pain, although I eventually got connected. Not a big deal personally.

Other Thoughts: This is well worth the $$ if you want a basic ultra-portable.

Rating + 5 Just what I've been waiting for!

Pros: Small, light and extremely portable. The RAM was easy to upgrade, I stuck a 2GB stick in.

Cons: Only 4GB storage, but I added an 8GB SDHC card for a little more. I also have a 120GB USB powered external HD for when I need to dump pictures from my digital camera.

Other Thoughts: I've been notebook shopping for over 6 months. I wanted something small, light and portable. I bought a fully loaded 13.3" widescreen, 4lb notebook, but it wasn't much smaller than the 14" non widescreen notebook it was to replace. I ended up sending it back after I realized that I didn't need that much power in a notebook.

I realized I only really used my current notebook to get online, check email, etc. It usually stayed in the hotel because it was too big and bulky to carry around.

The EeePC is perfect for me. I just got back from a week long trip with it. I watched some TV on the flight, which I copied from my Windows MCE machine, and while sitting at the airport during my layover. I actually took it with me when I left the hotel and browsed the internet from a restaurant that had free wifi access.

If you don't like the default OS, there are ways to install Windows and Linux from a flash drive, but it can be a pain so it might be a good idea to get an external DVD drive.

Rating + 5 Bought this

Pros: Newegg delivered it quickly, and in great shape. I couldn't believe how small this thing was. It's amazing what I've been able to do with it though, and how much I have learned in using Linux since buying this. It's also very quiet, I can play Einhander with it overclocked to 900mhz without hardly any sound. Plays N64 games well with emulator, and PSX games too.

Cons: It gets toasty warm after being on for a while, but thats kind of to be expected. The keyboard is a little flimsy, but it's also a 7 inch laptop. The only gripes I could make about this are things you should be able to figure out through common sense. If you have a problem, the support community for the EEE is HUGE. Chances are, someone wrote a detailed walkthrough for anything you might want to do.

Other Thoughts: I love taking this to class, it has become invaluable and is my travel companion most places I go now. I am very surprised by how strong the wifi receiver is in this as well, I can usually pick up signals that other people can't.

Pros: Small, portable, fully functional PC on a budget.

Cons: Buggy Linux software. Beware of any "updates"; they can wreak quite a bit of havoc with your system. Simple things like adding a printer can take you into Linux no-mans land. Low storage space. Installing XP can be a PitA.

Other Thoughts: Excellent effort, but before it's time? Maybe when solid state storage can be a minimum of 20 gigs this little monstor will be useful. Oh, and yes, Windows XP is better and much easier to use.

Rating + 5 Don't use this laptop in a public place...

Pros: because you'll never get any work done!

I've been in the middle of working on a short story and people have stopped me to gush over how "cute" it is (even other tech geeks can't get over how small and light it is). This is the perfect companion to a heavier laptop or your desktop machine and it ready to roll out of the box. It runs Linux but can be modified to run Windows XP (and though I'm a Windows kinda girl, Linux is working for me right now and I have now plans to change it).

Basically, everything I do on my laptop and desktop I can now do on this little powerhouse. I'm actually rather impressed that I've purchased an electronic device that actually does what it says from jump street. For more storage, I just bought a 4gb SDHC card and I'm good to go. I can transfer documents from a thumb drive and work on them easily.

Cons: There are a lot of complaints about the keyboard being too small, which I find somewhat ironic considering that people use their thumbs to enter data on most PDA's and other devices (can we say 'carpal tunnel' anyone?). The battery life is relatively short (around 3.5 hours give or take), and it tends to run warm (but not enough to cause burns). Small issues really.

Other Thoughts: If you are a writer, you NEED this notebook! It's so convenient for getting those random thoughts while commuting.

Rating + 5 Love everything but the rotten ASUS customer service

Pros: Very small, almost too small (mainly keyboard- I have big fingers), but you get used to it and it's much easier and more fun to use (not to mention much more flexible) than a PDA.

Cons: ASUS customer service SUCKS. My Eee died after 32 days. Newegg sent me to ASUS since it'd been over 30 days. Thanks Newegg. It took me 5 days and about an hour on hold (collectively, or about 15 minutes each at 4 different numbers/extensions) to get an RMA for this thing.

Other Thoughts: Despite the problems I had with ASUS customer service, I love this device and can't wait to get mine back. The truth is, it's my own fault that I'm having to put up with ASUS customer service anyway, so the fact that it only lasted 32 days isn't really Asus's fault, and when I finally did get someone, they spoke really good english and were very friendly. :-)

Pros: Runs great, Solid hardware, Capable of any OS, great community eeeuser.com very helpful with kernal modules and other information. Great external video output, hook up an external mouse, keyboard, and monitor with an external harddrive and you actually have a fully functional PC in an emergency. It suprised me.

Cons: Everyone mentions the keyboard, but what do you expect for something this size... the space had to go somewhere. Its alright after you get used to it. You have to makes sure you press the keys all the way down, you can't just tap them like on other laptops. The up arrow key is where the right shift key should be... that took a lot of getting used to. Internal wireless card is EXCEPTIONALLY weak. Only flaw in this machine.

Other Thoughts: I love it. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Great to just have in my bag in case I need a computer somewhere.

Rating + 5 Well worth it!

Pros: This machine is simply amazing for what you pay. The 900mhz processor is plenty fine (clocked at 630mhz) for the linux that comes preinstalled. The xandros linux is a pretty solid build of linux and very easy to navigate, use, and personalize. Memory upgrade is easy, up to 2gb DDR2 667, with that this will run windows xp very smooth. Very quick boot time too (20 - 30 sec).

Cons: The cpu fan whines a tiny bit if it is quiet you can hear it but nothing real bothersome. The battery life is a little subpar (2 - 2.5hr) but soon asus will come out with a larger 6 cell battery to extend it so not much of a problem.

Other Thoughts: Know what you are getting before you buy! There are many complaints about screen size, keyboard size, etc... The specs are right there for you to read and make a decision. If you have real expectations going into it you will not have one regret buying this machine! I love my eeePC

Pros: Great device for its intended purposes. This is a low cost, highly mobile - highly capable machine. The build quality is superb and the machine feels quite solid. Default Linux distro works great and it is plenty easy to customize. Great hardware and software! If you want a machine for internet connectivity on the go - consider the EEE!

Cons: Screen size is small and resolution not ideal for most tasks - but is certainly manageable and readable. Keyboard keys are small and require attention for typing - practice will be needed. Battery life seems slightly lacking. The default OS does not support some newer forms of wireless encryption.

Other Thoughts: Overall very satisfied. www.eeeuser.com is a wonderful community that has a great wiki that has provided solutions to many of my minor issues / concerns.

Rating + 5 Great Little Machine

Pros: Portable and light weight little machine that meets my expectations perfectly. It is simple to use with the Xandros OS that is installed. I was up and online with the wifi in about 10 minutes. I read a great deal of the reviews on this item and it is just as most say. I think it will meet most all my traveling computing needs for some time to come. I added 1 Gig of Crucial RAM which made it perform a bit faster. I have used various Linux OS's before and this one is OK. I could change it to Windoze, but why bog the machne down with excess baggage. I tested it with a USB stick drive and also a 60Gig WD Passport HD with USB both of which worked fine. I was able to open all the files in PDF and others formats easily. I suspect if one were a true Linux Geek this little baby could be fine tuned to really run a lot of good stuff. Open Source software works-just takes a little more effort sometimes, but well worth it. I doubt if I bother to run XP though the manual tells you how.

Cons: Keyboard takes some getting used to and it is tiny, but that makes it mobile so worth the adjustment. Runs a bit warm-no worse than my old ThinkPad with Win98! Smallish screen as reported-still OK to use. I still give it a 5 as it is exactly as described and well made.

Other Thoughts: Wish it came with a nice SD card say about 32 Gig, but the price would not be as nice.Read the other reviews-they are true.

Rating + 5 Very fun laptop

Pros: -Choice of included applications well thought out
-Very small
-Preinstalled with Linux
-Default OS is easy-to-use as ASUS claims

Cons: -800x480 resolution cuts off parts of some applications' windows, requiring me to use Tab.
-Included versions of Pidgin and Amarok are old.
-Right shift and tilde keys are in awkward positions.
-Keyboard is cramped.
-Included bag doesn't have room for both the laptop and the power cord

Other Thoughts: Don't buy a regular laptop bag for it! Instead, use one for a portable DVD player. I let my sister try out the included applications, and now she wants an Eee for herself.

Rating + 5 This thing rocks

Pros: Extremely useful considering its size and weight. Everything worked out of the box with no hassle. An excellent user community with lots of extra apps and advice on how to customize (hardware and software).

Cons: Web cam is a bit hokey...or seems so to me. Built-in bluetooth might be handy, except it would suck the battery down quick..but at least pre-installed bluetooth software might be nice.

Other Thoughts: For the new user, it's easy to use and very basic. Well thought out which type of apps are included. For the advanced user, this thing is extremely customizable - there are how-to's on the web for if you want to add more usb, or bluetooth, or "hard drive" or whatever. Also much information is available to switch the OS into advanced mode. I love it

Rating + 4 a very good first start

Pros: Compact size and weight. You can actually touch type on it. Low-glare screen. It just works right out of the box. Fast boot time. It performs quite well for only having a 900MHz processor and 512MB RAM. It has a good selection of installed apps for their target end users. OpenOffice is surprisingly usable on the small screen. This is a VERY GOOD sub-notebook for the price.

Cons: The Eee PC has a few issues that keep me from giving it a 5. As everyone has mentioned the Up Arrow key is in a bad position. The AC adapter is anti-social: it takes up two outlets on a power strip. The wireless configuration app is pretty limited: you cannot configure hidden wireless networks (ESSID), nor use WPA2 authentication, just WEP and WPA. However, experts can do this down in the shell. You have to go to the file manager to bring up a Linux shell (konsole). The desktop, while visually attractive and useful for the most part, is pretty inflexible about adding new apps, such as konsole. Finally, but very importantly, there are very few software updates from Asus, and there are security patches available that Asus needs to put up.

Other Thoughts: Samba and Portmap are started by default and for security reasons don't need to be. The ssh server is not installed. A VPN client would be nice to have, but isn't installed. While the OS as shipped is certainly functional, I'll probably install eeXubuntu. Asus can easily fix the Up Arrow problem by making the arrow keys about 2/3 as high and moving them under the Shift key as is done on most notebooks.

Rating + 5 The eeePC Rocks

Pros: Small. I mean... really small. Full qwerty keyboard. Built in microphone and webcam. Easy to use interface, even for a non-techie with a decent variety of software. Plenty of USB ports if you feel the need for, perhaps, a wireless keyboard/mouse and an external hard drive. Great wireless. Strong user community. AC Adapter about the size of a cell phone adapter as opposed to a brick.

Cons: Might be hard to customize for an non-techie. Webcam has low Frame Rate.

Other Thoughts: This laptop is full of the sexy. It does just what it claims to do and is a perfect laptop for mobile communication. It won't replace a primary computer but it sure is convenient for chatting it up at your local hot spot. If you aren't comfortable with using the installed Linux OS there are instructions to convert it to Windows XP. Happy comping.

Rating + 5 Compact and Sleek

Pros: This thing is the perfect size and weight to carry around with all my books, plus it fits perfectly into on of my medium sizes purses. My boyfriend loves that, mainly because if I take it with me when we go out to eat or something he wants to take it out look at all the nearby wifi signals and sniff packets. The thing also has an awesome wifi card and gets so many more signals than my entertainment pavillion does. When I was looking at buying one, I was worried that 4gigs wouldn't be enough room, so I bought an 8gig sd card. That turned out to be very useful, I ended up making it into a bootable backtrack just for my boyfriend.

Cons: A good thing to keep in mind about this laptop is that it is not a replacement laptop, but a supplementary laptop. I would never use just this laptop, I would die because this thing isn't capable of having portable games!

Other Thoughts: It came with a nice black carrying-case, which is completely nifty because finding a size appropriate one would be near-impossible.

Rating + 5 Cool!

Pros: Really light. When I opened the box I thought "Oh no! it's really too small! I will not be able to do anything with it!" Oh boy was I wrong! I installed Windows XP (need it for some specific programs for college) and gave it a try. Since then I didn't even opened my regular "full" laptop for the last week. Ordered it with a 8GB transcent SDHC (works great) and will be adding a 2Go stick soon. Great community online to help solve any problem (eeeuser.com is a good start).

Cons: The screen could have been a 800*600 instead of a 800*480, but surprisingly i got used to it very fast. The keyboard is small but for me it's not a problem: after 20 years using computers I still type with 2 fingers :P Be ready to do some -light- tweaking if you want to replace the default OS with Windows. Placement of the right shift key produces a lot of errors.

Other Thoughts: If you are looking for a light small laptop for occasional web browsing, some editing, or even more (I use Visual Studio Visual Basic and C# express on it with no problem) then don't hesitate, buy one! The price might be seem a little bit high (if you add the price of a SDHC and a RAM stick, close to $500), but for the utility and the fun you get, it's right on spot.

Rating + 2 Great Idea But Falls Short In So Many Ways!

Pros: Super small, very lightweight, and cheap! Runs at a decent pace to use most programs. Decent battery life of around 3 hours. Keyboard is almost usable for all but the biggest fingered people. WiFi works great. Super small power adapter.

Cons: The screen resolution is unusable. Thousands of websites and programs have to be scrolled. The screen quality is horrible too. It has to be the grainiest display I have ever seen on a laptop. When sitting on your lap, if you have the screen tilted too far back the laptop wants to flip over way too easy because there is no weight in the front. Can't comment on Linux OS because it is not capable with activeX controls so I had to upgrade to XP Pro right away. The 4gb size is unusable for Windows XP. There is a reason it cost $399. Save a couple hundred dollars more and buy something else. If you buy this for anything other than a novelty you will be greatly dissapointed.

Other Thoughts: Give it 1024 resolution with a glossy screen, at least an 8gb hard drive, and pre-install xp and you have something worth buying off the shelf. Do yourself a favor and spend a couple hundred more on a more established UMPC if you want something this small or wait until ASUS rolls out one with an 8 or 9" screen. Why did they make the screen so small to begin with? There is plenty of room there.

Rating + 5 Great umpc!

Pros: This laptop (umpc) is worth every penny. I bought this, along with 1 gig of ram and an 8 gig sdhc card. I slimmed down the Xp install with nLite, installed Office XP along with other programs and I have only used up 1.2 gigs of the 4 available gigs. Also, I removed the page file which saved a ton of space.

Cons: The keyboard takes some getting used to..make a day or two. That is not really a con though. The screen size is not as bad as people make it out to be. The resolution helps out a lot.

Other Thoughts: I may buy another for my wife. Also, there is a ton of how to web pages for those that are going to stick with the Linux software. I highly recommend using the advanced mode of linux because it allows you to do so much more.

Rating + 5 Great Lappy!

Pros: Portable and surprisingly "connectable" with built-in Wi-Fi, USB, LAN, etc. This puppy has three USB ports, which is pretty unbelievable on something this small. The screen works great and for a laptop of this size, the speakers sound surprisingly good, although not extremely loud. The OS is easy to learn and use. I had Wi-Fi up and running in 30 seconds by grabbing my WEP key off of a flash drive (cut-n-paste). Just a lot of great features on this thing for its size and price. Set up Wi-Fi once and it connects on startup of the machine.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to use on a trip to Europe where I don't want to carry my $2k laptop. All I need to be able to do is get to mail, internet, accounts, etc. The one other thing I will use it for (and this is great) is for transferring photos from SD media to my portable hard drive. That is exactly where the three USB ports come in handy. I upgraded the RAM to 1GB of Crucial and added a 16GB SDHC card. It is plenty fast for its purpose. Again, know what you are getting and set expectations correctly. You will not be disappointed.

Rating + 5 Asus 4G EeePC

Pros: A surprisingly solid product. I thought it would have a cheap plastic feeling, but it is firm and seem to be of high quality. Easily upgradable to 2GB RAM. The screen is nicely lit, with a great 133ppi screen that can be viewed from a distance. I have built and bought several PC's in my life and this is definitely one of my better purchases.

Cons: Comes with a weak Operating System. I chose to go with eeexubuntu (search google for d/l and wiki). It has RAM addressing that allows for 2GB of RAM and also a better GUI (xfce) than the original. I have read some cases of the original OS (Xandros i believe) not running cpu at full speeds, but eeexubuntu lets it fly at full speeds.

Other Thoughts: Some fair warning. A lot of the the files located in /etc directory of eeexubuntu need to be edited since there is no cdrom device attched. Please do not let this deter anyone from this operating system. Simply visit http://ubuntuforums.org
My last thought is that anyone who purchases this item should get an SDHC card (at least 16GB) for mroe storage.

Rating + 5 This thing is very good

Pros: Small size, feels very sturdy and well built, good price, all the essential laptop features.

Cons: Small Screen, only 4GB.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my wife to take to college, installed windows xp pro SP2 untouched + updates Plus office 2003 (word, exel only) and an anti virus and some other misc stuff. I was left with 670 MB free on the SSD. I also got the 16 SDHC card from Transend and 2 GB of GSkill ram. Work much better than I expected even tough there is very little space for windows XP and some programs. The rest of the software will be installed on the SD card. I cant give this item less than 5 stars for the price and the quality of the product. If you want to put XP get the 8 gig version, it will be worth the extra buck :)

Rating + 5 This should be called the EeeeeeeeeeeeePC

Pros: - Fast startup thanks to the 4gig SSD
- User friendly, however not as great for advanced users.
- This thing feels lighter than the advertised 2lbs. (Thumbs up)
- This model allows you to up the RAM. I'm going to put in 1 gig later tonight. Not necessary to put in 2 gigs cause it will drain batteries faster.
-Camera+mic
-Good range on wifi and easy to connect
-Does everything you NEED it to do

Cons: -There really aren't any cons if you know what you're getting. If you purchase this computer, you need to UNDERSTAND what you're getting. You'll get an ultra-portable that you can do homework on, surf the net, and watch videos and things of that sort.
-Don't buy this computer expecting to play HL2, TF2, Crysis, and etc. It just isn't going to happen.
-This is not a desktop replacement. Keep that in mind.
- Some people complained about the laptop's keyboard layout. True, there is little space but you're fingers will adjust to in in less than 10 to 15 minutes. Its isn't as bad as other people exaggerate it.
- The processor is underclocked. It's not really running at 900mhz. You can change this using 3rd party apps or just wait until they release a new stable bios update.
-Ditch the speakers and add an inch to the monitor (but I suppose it is this cheap for that reason)

Other Thoughts: Newegg's delivery was fast. I'm very satisfied with this laptop. Alot of people who reviewed it earlier said that if you're reading this, you should purchase it already. I AGREE. It is not a let down. I had great expectations for this laptop (knowing what I'm getting of course), and it did not let me down at all. You will not regret this purchase. It's so light and portable. I can pick it up with 3 fingers with little effort. It's that light.

GET THIS LAPTOP. It is a head turner/attention getter. =)

Note:It comes with linux, which most users are not used too using. I think linux is great, but I'm just too used to XP, so I'm installing XP tonight.

Pros: Great size and weight for person wanting a smaller computer. This is my first contact with the Linux operating system but if one is accustomed to Windows, this was not difficult to feel ones way around in. 25 second boot up time and 5 second shut down - I love it.

Cons: Keyboard and screen are a little small for convenient use but is expected for this size of laptop. Right hand shift key is not in the normal place which is confusing. One will also probably want to use an external usb mouse.

Other Thoughts: I have been looking for a small lightweight laptop to take on a cross country bicycle trip this summer and this fills the bill. I am very tickled with it.

Pros: I ordered my eeePC, knowing I was going to change the OS to eeeXubuntu, but when I got it I had second thoughts. The OS it comes with is very pretty and intuitive, but because I was more familiar with Ubuntu I changed anyway. When I got it, it was smaller than I thought and I was scared about the tiny keyboard, but within thirty minutes I was able to type close to my normal speed. I love this thing.

Cons: With eeeXubuntu, youtube is kind of a pain, however, everything else runs great.

Rating + 4 ASUS EEE 4G 701 *WOW*

Pros: - Size of whole unit is just right, any smaller would be a challenge.
- Supporting XP and ram upgrades are great.
- Bootup time is great (SSD drive)
- WIFI great, 3 usb ports, ethernet port great, touch pad great.
- Truly a baby notebook
- Strudy build solid feel
- EEEUSER.com forum is a very solid support site

Cons: - Could use a few hardware switches, like wifi switch
- The display settings are a bt of a challenge and could use a bit more tweaking but no real problem.

Other Thoughts: I have NLite installed XP
Office 2003 with Outlook connected to exchange server
dozen more assorted programs

This is the perfect Treo companion
I am hooked up to the Treo now using internet sharing to write this post.

You too give you an idea I am 6'4 and have large hands.
I am able to use the EEE for exactly what it is am UMPC notebook with as good a keyboard of any UMPC on the market right now.

Of course this keyboard will not compare to a full size key board and it will not replace my HP8000 desktop replacement with full sized keyboard and number pad.

This one will go with me on travels, flights, setting in doctors offices, car service at the dealership, etc..

I just found my Targus USB Bluetooth adapter.

So now I am writing this post on my EEE tethered to my Treo 750 using bluetooth. Not as fast as the USB, but very cool and no wires.

Pros: This cool gadget is a cross between a PDA and a laptop, its about 10 times more useful then my PDA and almost as useful as my real laptop, but its way more portable. I really love it already and I havent had it for that long, the keyboard is easy to type on(typing this review on it), I surf the web on it and listen to MP3s through earphones, sounds better then my old mp3 player. Wireless works great.

Cons: Nothing big, I would rather have the screen an inch bigger then the speakers as I use earphones anyway. Storage is a concern but thats more of a trade-off then a con, I have a 2 gig SD card will probably buy a 8 gig soon, so I can put more on it.

Other Thoughts: I like the OS it comes with, I tried the advance desktop but switched back because I like the big Icons. May try XP but I really like the default software, so it would only be for fun.

This thing really rocks, the best new toy I've got in a long time, no regrets at all and newegg got it here quick.

Rating + 5 Great machine@

Pros: This is a very small, lightweight machine. However, it comes loaded with a version of Linux that would be very simple for Windows users to start right up with. The OpenOffice programs are also compatible with Windows programs such as Word/Excel. Startup and shutdown are both lightning fast, as is the wireless internet. I have not found the small screen to be any problem and I use it for hours at a time. I have used this machine to write the minutes during meetings and can keep right up. I did do the 1G upgrade at the time I purchased it.

Cons: It took me a couple of hours to get used to the keyboard size (I kept missing the right hand shift key). Other than that, I wish I'd had one years ago@

Other Thoughts: I had a minor glitch purchasing it, but after I got it, I found I love this machine. I've almost completely quit using my laptop (except for games and Photoshop). I don't know why someone would want to load Windows on this one. This version of Linux is very user friendly, and the machine is much faster without it. I've shown this machine to many people and six of them have already ordered one for themselves.

Other Thoughts: I think this is a great laptop for what it is designed for. I absolutely love it and use it everyday for surfing the web, taking notes in class, watching movies and whatnot. Pros: very small and very portable, AC adapter has nice cord length.

Cons: slow battery recharge time.

Other Thoughts: Haven't installed XP yet.
I run the OS in advanced desktop mode, you have to manually install it to use it (not hard at all lots of how to's online)
tried installing xp via external DVD drive, didn't work I think my disk was bad though as this is the easiest way to install xp
some keys are poorly placed but otherwise the keyboard size is easy to get used to in a day or so, about a week to remember keys that are not in standard places.

Rating + 5 Great Little Machine

Pros: Lightweight, quick to start and shut down, wireless or wired for Network or Internet access, outstanding User Community. Excellent for on the go communication via email, messaging, or video. I have had the machine for just less than a month and have upgraded the RAM to 2 Gigs and added a Logitech VX Nano mouse. I use it for email, messaging, video chats and keeping up with and organizing my busy schedule. This machine will load the Operating System in aproximately 20 seconds and shut down even faster. It comes with a load of Open Source Software equivalent in functionality to any of the Microsoft Office products. It has a Solid State Drive rather than a Hard Drive so it is less prone to damage from bumps and bangs, but according to ASUS, it has a limit of approximately 100,000 Read/Writes. The Forums were not real clear on how long this drive might last, but sounds like it could be more than 5 years depending on the user. I would do some research for a definitive answer.

Cons: Any of the Cons I list can be countered and brushed off as not to much of a concern. It is not Windows XP, but it is Linux and if you choose to, you can purchase and install a light version. It does have a smaller keyboard and screen, but it is bigger and easier to use than any PDA or Smartphone type device I have used. It does not have a firewall, but it is Linux based and I have had it scanned for security holes such as open ports and surprisingly, it is pretty tight. It is Linux, and some simple things like upgrading or adding software can be a bit of a challenge for someone without the experience, but it includes a host of software that will cover most needs. Upgrading it can be a bit of a challenge, but the User Community is vast with Forums available to help out with most questions. It comes with 512mb upgradeable to 2gb, but the OS it ships with can only see 1gb unless you make some changes to a configuration file accessible via a command line.

Other Thoughts: This machine is very cool, but it is not a replacement for a desktop PC. It could be a replacement for a laptop depending upon what you plan on using it for. The small keyboard is adequate for messaging and email but could be a bit cumbersome for typing a long letter. I really see this as a lightweight, mini laptop that makes a great communication tool for travelers. It does have the ability to really function as a laptop, but its size could limit that for some users. Some people in the forums have changed the OS to a more robust version of Linux or Windows XP, I personally will not be making that change as this machine operates efficiently the way it comes.

Pros: Small size means you can take it ANYWHERE so you have it when you need it. Haven't had any trouble connecting to networks, using thumbdrives or SD cards. Technical assistance from the eeeuser forums helps with increasing it's already useful nature.

Cons: The keyboard is JUST small enough to not be comfortable. Could also use a larger screen (common complaint I guess) and a Bluetooth adapter. Also wish it came with (or had available) a longer lasting battery and spare power charger.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice if the unit had a direct link to one of the free repositries of software that are springing up. There's so MUCH out there that you can add to it!

Cons: Dumbed down interface also prevents a lot of tweaking. Some WiFi issues with encrypted connections occur. Only 1GB usable space (rest is used by recovery partition and system).

Other Thoughts: Great for what it's meant to do. The black color doesn't look dirty like the white. On a different note, I made the mistake of not buying this on Newegg. The competitor had it for a couple bucks less shipped, but it arrived (to my horror!) in a large, unpadded box. Believe me folks, the shipping charge is worth it- Newegg pads their shipments well.

Rating + 5 Great Little Computer!

Pros: It works perfectly. I needed a more portable machine that could do e-mail, presentations, surf. This does all that and more. There's also a huge online community to help you tweak this thing so you can get even more out of it.

Cons: It's portable. There'll be obvious limitations in size of screen and keyboard

Other Thoughts: Do your research. Make sure it's what you really want and you won't be frustrated.
