best bang 4 your buck
Pros: does everything it says it can. was very surprised how quick it boots up. I'm in the air force, so i travel A LOT. This little guy is a life saver in those hurry up and wait situations. I love being able to have a computer that i can actually go places and not worry about finding an outlet. I bought this last year before my deployment, now i'm considering buying a couple more for the kids.
Cons: after owning this i don't look at laptops the same way anymore.
Other Thoughts: for all the people who put other OS's on it: xandros works fine. yes it is very rudimentary, but this thing is "netbook" and it is perfect at it's job. not trying to be rude, but the way you ppl talk sounds like xandros is horrible. Linux is a lot more user friendly these days, and any version is way better than most alternatives.

Pros: This thing is a tank...very durable! It's exactly what it says: a portable (I've had a couple people remark how light it was), small, netbook. Boots quickly, battery lasts almost as advertised (longest i've made it last is 6hrs but I keep the screen pretty bright). All the features work with the original OS and XP. Memory card reader turned out to be really useful.
Cons: OS it came with originally, although great for internet, music, and word processing/presentations...was a bit limiting. Took me about 15 min to install Ubuntu so it wasn't much of a con.
Other Thoughts: I highly recommend this product. It does everything I need and I absolutely love it.

Not as good as I hoped
Pros: Works good with Eeebuntu and the latest kernel 2.6.30.
Cons: I didn't like the Xandros linux, didn't seem to have a lot of features, apt-get update wouldn't run right.
The wireless wouldn't work on Ubuntu Netbook Remix or eeebuntu until I install the 2.6.30 kernel, however after putting that kernel on I haven't run into any issue.
I was hoping for something that had more features and worked better out of the box.

Great NetBook
Pros: Amazing little netbook. The hardware is very reliable. It handles much more than I expected. It is also much faster than expected for such a small package. I upgraded the OS to XP and can use it for all of the functions I would use my desktop for. I use the smaller 8GB solid state drive for the OS and the other internal 32GB solid state drive for applications and data, which works out perfectly. I have had no glitches or bugs on this NetBook and I find myself and my wife using it more and more.
Cons: Not so much a con but I wish this model came with XP installed.
Other Thoughts: Amazing to take on the road or on vacation. Works well with tethering so I always have internet. The wireless is also very strong. I highly recommend this netbook, especially with an upgrade to XP.

Excellent product, worthless customer service
Pros: The product itself is very light, has great battery life and a decent starting OS. Once you get used to the keyboard, its wonderful to type on.
Cons: After having the eee die from what I believe was the power adapter module, I sent it in for repairs. Received my RMA and got everything going. After the repairs were done I received an E-mail that said it was being shipped home with no additional information. No tracking number, no arrival date. After contacting ASUS for a week straight, I hear from a woman that has received my eee with hers. I tell ASUS give them all the info and they say they'll fix it and get my package to me. After having called them constantly for about a month I STILL do not have my eee. I had to schedule a pickup myself with fedex to go pick the package up, and now it is finally on its way. Also as a note of their quality repairs, the woman, who also had her eee repaired, had it die on her already just 2 weeks after receiving it. This is the most horrendous customer service I have endured.
Other Thoughts: The product may be quite nice, but your money is better spent on the insurance. If something goes wrong you know you'll have proper customer service, unlike that you will receive from ASUS.
Manufacturer Response:Dear Valued Customer, We apologize for the negative experience that you had while your board was being repaired. We will investigate this matter and ensure that this will not happen again in the future. We also want to make sure that you have received a working replacement. Please contact us at aps_support@asus.com and reference case# NE464768 so that we can get your feedback. Best Regards, ASUS SUPPORT TEAM

Excellent
Pros: Overall design is very versatile, I installed Ubuntu Easy Peasy which definitely requires a little tinkering, but I expected that, and all went swimmingly, it's basically a full-functioning computer in most ways, Lightweight!!
Cons: Right shift key outta place but it's not terrible
Other Thoughts: :)

Hard to beat!
Pros: Great portability. I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix and with my 3G service I am on the internet almost anywhere.
Very well thought out product.
Touchpad is easy to use, has two finger scroll, very easy to use. Thought I would have to pack along a mouse (I usually hate touchpads), but this one works fine.
I am getting a little older, and the vision isn't what it used to be, but the screen is still large enough for me to see just fine.
Cons: The sound from the speakers is pretty lame, but I really expected that. If you want good sound, plug in some ear phones.
Other Thoughts: Battery life is very good. I used the netbook on and off for a couple days without re-charging. Similar use with other laptops required daily charging.
If you want portable, and don't need a power house laptop and aren't wedded to (ugh) windows, this is great.

Girlfriend loves it
Pros: My girlfriend takes it with her everywhere. It fits in her purse. Fast wireless, keyboard finally fits a man sized hand, and it doesn't attract cats to the excessive heat.
Cons: The linux distro that shipped with it was horrible. Really? Asus can't make some sort of deal with ubuntu and ship that on these? rediculous.

Don't know how I lived without this one
Pros: Small, light, fast, capable. The screen is bright, the keyboard is easy to get used to for a small keyboard. Boots in seconds, wifi has been flawless, works with my company vpn (openvpn). I could go on for days.
Cons: I haven't found one yet for lots of looking.
Other Thoughts: I installed Easy Peasy because I needed something more Debian/Ubuntu than the default Xandros OS. It rocked from the very beginning and has allowed me to leave my laptop at work since the day I got it. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Great if you change the OS to eeebuntu
Pros: SSD is great, slower than a HDD but if it's in rough or clumsy hands, can't beat it. Screen is very nice as well as the integrated web cam, my sister in Japan commented my image looked better than it did on my laptop. Battery life is as promised in my case.
Cons: Included distro of Linux is awful. Some thing didn't work at all, other things did not work as they should, and other thing it just refused to let you do. Can't install wine (or even I couldn't get it to function properly, got it installed just couldn't get it to work. My OS would try to open a file when I tried to access file properties.
Other Thoughts: They tried to hard to make it idiot proof and just ended up making it useless. So I did some reading and found eeebuntu. Now I love this thing! Everthing is working as it should. Google earth is being slow, but Wine is working and the windows programs I need run fine too. Plus there is a huge library of free software that you have access to, just put on a desktop astronomy program I found in the education section. :) This little machine is fun :) Would have gave this netbook 5 stars if it came with eeebuntu by default. I've heard easy peasy is a good OS choice too for this machine.

great netbook
Pros: The battery life is excellent. The keyboard has tactile response. Has all the upgrades I would have done to the original. Small, light weight, can take it anywhere. Used it for a week as a 'primary pc' and enjoyed it. Runs all the software I use, including Mathematica and MatLab, so I didn't need a more expensive/bigger laptop. Multi-touch trackpad is great for browsing documents, or googlemaps. Similar gestures to the iphone..
Cons: Can get slow when rendering pages in firefox.
Other Thoughts: I love this netbook, even in Xandros. Running EEEBuntu 3.0, adds a lot of features, but can't wait for the remix to come out, I miss it from eeebuntu 2.0. I recommend switching to EEEBuntu to get the most of out this machine, the default xandros install is very limited.

Very good choice
Pros: I've owned this netbook (in black) for six months & it has become my most used portable. I replaced the default linux with Ubuntu Eee, now called Easy Peasy. All hardware was recognized & set up. Easy Peasy runs faster than Windows of any flavor, even faster than my Dell Inspiron dual core running XP. Boot time is much faster and the opensource linux software is very good (and free). You will need an external DVD drive & newegg sells a usb powered Samsung for ~ $50.00 that works great for me. For more convenience I rip movies on my i7 desktop system, convert them to MPEG-4 and load them on a memory stick. Linux has several excellent opensource media players; VLC is my favorite. Plug in your noise cancelling headset and you're good to go anywhere. Bluetooth & wireless are easy to set up and use & the built in audio & video capabilities are quite acceptable. Runs very cool & quiet with a long battery life.
Cons: Right shift key takes a little getting used to but it's nothing major.
Other Thoughts: The volume of opensource software is incredible and immediately available on-line. Star Office is comparable to Office 2003 and creates .pdf files without requiring Adobe software. I've been an MSDOS & Windows user since the old Win 3.0 days and I am really impressed with where linux has come in the last couple years. If you haven't nosed around linux recently I recommend you take a look. It brings the fun back to just playing around with your computer. Easy multi boot software & mobo hardware systems keep your Windows games convenient or you can create virtual operating systems in either Windows or Linux.

Poor SSD, atrocious keyboard
Pros: Small, lightweight, excellent battery life, very nice 10" display.
Cons: As others have mentioned, the SSDs in this machine are extremely slow, contributing to long pauses while using the EEE 1000. If that were the only thing wrong with it, I'd give this model two or three eggs. The absolute worst part about this EEE, though, is the keyboard. If you attempt to type fluidly, be prepared to hit that backspace key, as the keyboard *will* randomly repeat characters! I'm on my second keyboard, and I still have repetition problems - and it was only after I googled for 'eee 1000 double keystrokes' that I found that I was far from the only one suffering with this keyboard.
Other Thoughts: Quality control much, Asus? Really, how do you botch a keyboard design so badly?

nice lil laptop
Pros: very solid built laptop. just enough specs for everyday computing.
Cons: no cd/dvd rom, prepackaged linux isn't as good, but that's only software.
Other Thoughts: really enjoy the laptop. hardware is great.

Great for students
Pros: *Super light weight *Super long battery life *Screen is bright enough in most environments *Keyboard is small but very touch typable compared to many other netbooks. *Small lightweight brick used for charging *Low heat output and SSDs make it extremely quiet. *Seems fairly durable *Pretty good boot times
Cons: *Right control button is a bit small and the right shift button is out of place *Left and right click buttons have too much resistance and are difficult to hold down (not a problem if you use a mouse or predominantly use CLIs) *Stock OS leaves much to be desired, but I expect most people looking at this review won't have any issue replacing it.
Other Thoughts: Went ahead and ordered a 2 gig stick of ram along with it, so I haven't used the machine with the stock 1 gig.
This little laptop is perfect for me as I'm both a college student and my job requires me to be on the go. I hardly even notice it in my backpack or tucked under my arm. It's also a bit of an eye catcher, I get comments on it all the time.

Excellent Choice for a Travel Laptop
Pros: This is one of the best product purchases I have ever made, in any product category.
This is the perfect size for a travel laptop - the smallest form factor that allows an (almost) full size keyboard (92% full size, works fine for me) with enough battery life for a coast-to-coast flight, with layovers.
Comes with Open Office, Firefox, Picasa, all the KDE tools, etc. installed.
Xandros has done a nice job tweaking KDE/Linux for this Asus. My non-technical family members, who are Linux-innocent all love to use this machine. I am buying another for my 12 year-old daughter.
Cons: The touch pad is a tad touchy, but it is quite usable. I prefer using a small USB travel mouse, but at some cost in battery life.
Other Thoughts: Bluetooth laser mouse should be a perfect accompaniment, does not drain the battery, and can be used on any convenient surface. I have ordered one, but no yet used it.

Pros: great size to carry around. screen resolution is better than hp mini. dont know why they have the same specifiications oh yeah --- this is TFT, sound , webcam keyboard -- good
Cons: dont know why video playback is choppy when i go on internet. this is a netbook --- i am runny xandros -- dont know if u can tweak it i like watch shows on hulu.com and youtube -- dont like to watch it choppy.

Wish they had it in black
Pros: 802.11n, bluetooth, SSD, 2GB DDR2 expandable, 6-cell battery, 92% size keyboard, non-Windoze OS
Cons: Newegg only offers pearl white finish, many other e-tailers are sold out or overpriced
Other Thoughts: Haven't purchased yet (see cons), but for me this is the netbook for other's to beat. The price over other 1000s is well worth it to do without the hassle of removing XP and getting a SSD to boot. Yet to use Xandros, but will give it a try. Why do so many people need want desktop size storage space on a netbook? Anyone whose ever gotten tired of the hum of a 5400 rpm HDD going off every time your system memory gets caught paging is more than willing to do without 80GB+ internal storage and just get an ext HD for portable storage. Use a netbook for it's intended use, they're not supposed to be desktop replacements.

defective keyboard
Pros: don't know yet because it hasnt worked properly yet.
Cons: this laptop has a defective keyboard. Called Newegg for an exchange, they refused because I contacted them after the return/exchange period expired. I brought it to ASUS. They took a week to work on it and told me it was fix. I used it for two days, the same keys " 5 e r d f " stop working again. I guess I will have to call ASUS RMA again.
Other Thoughts: Always though ASUS was a high quality brand name. Having second thoughts about buying anymore of their product. Will not recommend their product to anyone else at this point.

Awesome little netbook
Pros: if you know what you are getting there are none. Don't expect anything beyond what it says it does... Email, surfing, etc. I loaded the EEEbuntu Netbook Remix on it and it runs great, and is wonderful for couch-surfing.
Cons: Speakers are too low to hear, even cranked up the whole way.. Have to use headphones... Otherwise no issues.
Other Thoughts: I bought this because at the time all my computers were desktops, and all were upstairs in my office. Wanted a small box to surf with when watching TV, looking up stuff when cooking int he kitchen, etc. For that it ROCKS! Used less and less though since I bought my Mac Book Pro, but then - it cost $2800!

Nice little laptop
Pros: Bought this for my wife who does not like heavy laptops. Bottom line - she loves it. I thought she would not like it because it does not have windows, but it turns out she really does not care as long as it does internet and word processing. The Xandros works okay and the wife likes it, but I installed Ubuntu after a few weeks because I could not stand Xandros after a while. I like Ubuntu so much I installed it on all my computers. Good Ubuntu support online.
This laptop is very light and the battery lasts a long time. Screen is decent size.
Great product from Newegg.
Cons: Keyboard - the wife ordered a full-size wireless keyboard and mouse for when she is not on the go.
Other Thoughts: After two months, still happy with this purchase. Would recommend to a friend. Would recommend newegg in a heartbeat.

Love it
Pros: No problems with this whatsoever. I tested wired lan, wireless lan, bluetooth, usb, audio, sd, camera and everything else it came with. Everything worked right out of the box. I use this primarily to do basic office work, watch video files, and surf the internet. The version of Linux installed is fine. I thought I'd try out some other versions, but really don't have the need to. Upgraded the memory to 2 gigs easily just in case I want to install winxp later. Video files played fine with the 1 gig installed memory. Plays avi, mpeg without any lagging. Video and audio sync well. The neoprene cover it comes with is flexible enough to keep earbuds, network cable, sd cards, and power cables all tucked in nicely together.
Cons: Yes, the right shift key is awkward but I knew that when I purchased it.
Other Thoughts: I ordered this through newegg and it came a couple of days later than when the shipping company guaranteed. Newegg refunded my shipping no problem even though it was the shippers fault. I hope they got their money back from the shipper, but I thank them all the same.

defective keyboard
Pros: portable
Cons: the keys " 4 5 e r d f " are defective. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. It is impossible to log in when they don't work because there is no way to enter those charaters with the built in keyboard. However sometimes it works and I can log in, but then after a few minutes of use, it doesnt work. It is annoying to type then realize the letters are missing. It is difficult to chat in IM because of the missing characters.

LOVE IT!
Pros: Light weight, long battery life, nice wifi. Sleek clean unit. Perfect for use of internet, email, minor document/spread sheet editing. I have a sales position and use it for my travel PC. Perfect for airport travel!!!
Cons: OS is very mickey mouse. I installed Ubuntu the first week I had it. The right shift key is awkwardly located and cause alot of typing errors and makes entering form data on webistes a pain. I never knew how much I used that key until I purchased this netbook.
Other Thoughts: If you want a high powered gaming, photo editing, or a replacement for a desktop or laptop PC that you do major document editing on then you have the wrong device. The screen size is large for this category computer but not intended for those uses. They are not the replacement for your desktop or main computer but perfect if you travel and don't want to drag a heavy laptop around!

Amazing Netbook
Pros: This computer is absolutely amazing. The battery life is outstanding and it works great with XP Home. I use it for the internet, email, word processing, and music. I love this computer. It is so easy to throw in my backpack and take it with me around campus all day. I don't regret getting this netbook at all!!
Cons: The shift and up arrow are reversed. It's no problem, just takes getting used to.
Other Thoughts: Best bang for the buck!!

Great little machine with a few flaws.
Pros: Light-weight Highly portable Keyboard is well sized (although I do have small hands) Touchpad is responsive (and recognizes a few gestures) The charger is equally small and portable which is nice
Cons: Advertising is deceptive. If you load anything other than Xandros (e.g. Ubuntu/EasyPeasy) it takes longer to boot-up. Not MUCH longer but...longer still.
The battery life is NOT 7 hours. Running EasyPeasy with everything (bluetooth, webcam, etc) but wi-fi disabled gets you about 5.5 which is pretty nice, but it's not as advertised.
Xandro's is really limiting from what I found, so I loaded Ubuntueee/EasyPeasy. It's quite a pain to get all tweaked out, with little adjustments required to make "luxuries" such as hot-keys and sound to work correctly.
Other Thoughts: So, as advertised, with Xandros, it does boot-up quickly and probably has a longer battery life. However, if you get frustrated at Xandros' limitations and decide to load Ubuntu, then you're in for quite a bit of work and loss of advertised features (such as battery life and boot-up time). That said, in the day or two I tried to use Xandros, it crashed on me quite a few times.
So, if you buy this computer, you should not be a total newb and understand how to install a linux operating system, or have a working computer that you can use to look up the issues as they arise.

Really nice!
Pros: Very portable, +6 hours on battery. Really good if you upgrade memory to 2 Gb.
Cons: The 40 Gb. is not 1 SSD disk. The NetBook has 2 internal (different) SSD: 1 8Gb and 1 32 Gb. That's not itself really a problem... you just see 2 drives.
The real concern is that the 2 disks are different in performance. I wanted to have a dual boot, so I left linux in the 8 Gb and installed windows in the 32 Gb drive. Linux was blazing fast while Windows was literally crawling... it was unusable. After reading a lot I found that it seems the 8 GB drive is a SLC SSD and the 32 Gb. is a MLC SSD. The gap in performance is greater than 3X between the drives. So I had to stay with just 1 OS in the 8 Gb drive and use the 32 Gb drive as a storage drive.
Other than that... it's a great product.

Great pc
Pros: -Small! -Easily takes place of all my notebooks, and my old laptop when in class.(hp pavilion dv9005us) -Fast bootup( I know everyone knows, but i was still amazed.) -Xandros( Yes this is a pro, it works great if you customize it a bit.) -I enjoy the keyboard, it's actually not that bad, right shift key is in the lower right hand side, but as a touch typist who never used that key anyways, it wasn't even hard to transition.
Cons: -Nothing as of yet. Although, I have tried to load win7 into it, but because of my lack of knowledge on this stuff, I have yet to have it successful. But that's entirely my fault. -Ah! I thought of one, the touchpad! Sometimes it's very sensitive and responsive, but on occasion I notice it likes to go wild and move a bit aimlessly.
Other Thoughts: -I'd like to try win7, and I heard it works great, I'd recommend this and if you don't like xandros, upgrade to vista or win7.

I like it alot.
Pros: Great battery life, prefect portable size and works well. Easy to tote around and get wireless access. Easy Linux transition for a windows user.
Cons: An arrow key is where the right shift should be. Not sure how to fix it with this keyboard size but it takes a little getting use to.
Other Thoughts: This is the first time I have used Linux. Linux users aren't big on the simplicity of this distribution but it is very windows like and thus an easy first transition to Linux. I may at some point replace it with an Ubuntu install but for now it is doing what I want. That is this is a great machine to keep with me all the time for quick internet access. I had a 901 before this one for about a week. That keyboard was just a little too cramped but this one is very comfortable plus the battery life is much, much better. This really is a fun little machine. I walk around the house with it all the time. It's gets a lot of attention from people.

Pros: ProPilot it sounds like you just don't know anything about computers. You should probably go to best buy and get all of your computer stuff from there, and take your Eee pc to geek squad to have them fix it.
Cons: Asus is perfect if you have some inteliggence you will not have problems with their products and you will recieve good support and their return policy is also great.

ITs not the hardware per say its the ssd
Pros: It has nothing to do with the hardware of the Eee pc Windows does not work well on ssd's in any machine. Thats why the windows Eee pc's don't come with ssd's, thus why you voided the warranty install a version of linux and you will have no problems.
Cons: People that don't research things before they buy them.
Other Thoughts: unless you purchase a ssd that is the slc format you will never run windows on an ssd effectively however there are guides to make windows work better on them, google it and you may be able to make it work.

Hidden Facts and Defective Computer
Pros: This would have been a very well developed concept if it worked.
Cons: Installed Windows XP per the instructions in the provided manual. The manual instructions included deleting all existing partitions, and I did so. The computer froze up on every little task. It took 5 minutes to load the Start menu, and 4 hours to install a Windows update. This was indicative of a hardware issue. I called ASUS for tech support, and they said by installing XP I voided the warranty and they can not provide tech support. This is NOT stated anywhere in the manual nor on the warranty terms on the ASUS website. Yet, it seems obvious that XP would be supported since there is a chapter in the manual about installing XP, a CD with drivers for XP, and they sell this same model with, XP. Furthermore by following their instructions to install XP, including deleting the recovery partition, they had me stuck in a corner with a defective computer. I was surprised I was able to get the factory OS back on it after that.
Other Thoughts: After buying two defective products in a row (the first, a motherboard that fried my i7) and dealing with their deceptive warranty practice I never will consider buying this brand again even if somebody was holding a gun to my head. Newegg has been a big help through my situation.
Manufacturer Response:Dear Valued Customer, Based on the problem described an error may have occurred during the Windows XP installation which sounds very likely. If you were able to restore the factory OS after deleting the partitions by using the original recovery CD-ROM then that would signal that there is no hardware defect. Installing Windows XP on a Linux unit does not void your warranty out-right. The only way you void your warranty in this case is if a problem arises after you alter the original configuration of your unit and then send it in for repair in a non-factory state. If you have any other questions or concerns please contact ASUS at 1-888-678-3688 and reference case# 325411.

Its small, portalbe, and utilitarian
Pros: Its small, portable, and has just the essentials for computing. The keyboard is very usable. It comes preloaded with linux, a novelty for some, but I really appreciate it. It runs Ubuntu 8.04 great!
Cons: Never have seen 6 hours of battery, linux is not a product, its more of a product, but fun nonetheless.
Other Thoughts: Its a great machine, but don't expect it to do everything, its a hyper threaded single core. It works great with 2 gigs of ram.

awesome machine
Pros: Excellent battery life, fast processing for a little guy and runs very quietly. Feels well built.
Cons: Microphone and Volume take a bit of extra tweaking using Ubuntu eee, however not the EEE's fault ;-)
Other Thoughts: The provided Xandros OS is not very good at all, however a simple format and install of Easy Peasy and this laptop works like a little champ :-) I am loving this laptop, the bluetooth, camera, and wireless all work great. I love taking this thing around with me everywhere I go! The sleave that comes with it is slick and the 10" screen is the perfect size for a netbook.. Even runs Compiz quite well, I would recommend this netbook to anyone

ASUS Eee PC 1000 40G
Pros: Light weight, good battery
Cons: Horrible computer! While browsing or typing, it would frequently freeze up for a few seconds and this would keep happening every 10 to 15 minutes. I believe its due it the sdd hard drive. The sdd hard drive is fast to read from but very slow to write to.
Other Thoughts: would not recommend the sdd version of this laptop to anyone... instead get the normal hard drive.
Asus should have tested this hard drives before putiing them out on the market.

Excellent with openSUSE
Pros: Small, light. Long battery life, runs fairly cool. What cooling fan is used is extremely quiet. Clear, vivid screen.
Was not impressed with the provided OS, see below. Put openSUSE 11.1 on it with an external DVD drive - the install was very slow but once set up, it was PERFECT!
Everything works out of the box, and only a few tweaks are needed to optimize (using ext2 or ext3 with a writeback journal, mounting with 'noatime').
KDE 4.1 with compositing effects works fine, even on a battery. I was shocked by this.
SSD drives seem very quick when reading. See below for writing complaint...
Cons: The provided xandros OS blows. Don't bother with it, it's just as bad as windows (and looks similar too).
Can't lock out the boot process. Even if boot devices are used, you can still select any bootable device connected at the POST screen.
SSD drives are slow to write to.
Other Thoughts: Purchased with extra memory (N82E16820145172) and installed immediatly. Did not test with the default 1gb.

Excellent Ubuntu box
Pros: True 7 hour battery life under real usage!
Ubuntu installs beautifully and runs with all the pretty eye-candy. Ubuntu runs much faster than I had anticipated and it has exceeded all my expectations for doing real work. Really, from a power perspective it can handle just about anything except compiling or FPS games.
Cons: Keyboard sucks; very soft keys kind of Mac-like. Screen is Ok, but not great. I use an external monitor and mouse (of course, I did this with my old laptops, too).
The wireless chip in the model I received isn't supported by default in Ubuntu 8.10, but I quickly found the drivers via Google. Installing them was pretty easy. But the chipset varies from run to run, so some may be supported out of the box. They all are supported one way or another because it comes with Linux preinstalled. Once I sorted out the driver issue, Ubuntu 8.10's wireless support is a dream on it: Wireless just works the way you'd expect, period.
Other Thoughts: I popped 2Gb of RAM into it. That went easy as pie and does not void the warranty.
The default install is a custom Linux. Meh. It worked fine but was geared towards grandma. Very easy to use, very simple. It lasted about a day before I installed Ubuntu. Is ANYONE actually running the default install instead of Ubuntu?

Portable and Versitile
Pros: The ASUS EEE PC 1000 ( White ) has a lot to offer for the casual computer user. While it's small size may seem like a problem for typing on the keyboard, this is not really a problem. The keyboard is perfect size. Unlike the 901, the screen is brighter, it comes with more hard drive space, larger screen, and a keyboard that you can type on with two hands!
I'd only recommend 901 for children or girls with smaller hands and someone who is more concerned about compact portability.
The Xandros OS is a blessing for the average user, however it does come with it's limitations as many have said. I'd acknowledge Xandros as a con and a pro.
Wonderful battery life 6-7 hours on power saving mode, but at a price of aesthetics!
Also it being white is a pro over it's black counterpart, less noticeable fingerprints by FAR.
Comes with built in webcam.
Your friends will be all over you with questions about how its so small and etc
Cons: One con is the battery, it increases the width of the netbook by 1/3rd at the back. However, this is hardly noticeable unless you are holding the netbook in the air.
Other cons would be the Xandros OS, if you are a regular PC user and have technical knowledge, you may want to install EEEubuntu or Windows XP Professional. This netbook does come with drivers for Windows XP.
External drive required for installation. Also be aware that Windows XP is far more user friendly then any linux platform there is and probably will ever be.
Your friends will be all over you with questions about how its so small and etc.
Other Thoughts: Accessory 1: You can buy wonderful and easily removable stickers to this laptop! However, not provided by newegg.
Accessory 2: The MS-71 Vento mouse designed by ASUS, it is perfect for this netbook.
Accessory 3: Good headphones couldn't hurt, or even earphones. White ones will be difficult to find. Avoid ipod ones! lol.
NOTE: The Webcam is DISABLED by default in BIOS. This is what causes the problem with the "Darkness" in skype and other messengers. You must enable your webcam in BIOS a minor fix.

decent little laptop
Pros: Light weight, long battery life, supported by many different operating systems. I have all the hardware working with plain fedora core 10. I didn't even need to use eeebuntu or eeedora. It took some customization to get the wireless and webcam working, but it was as simple as adding a repository and installing the appropriate kernel module drivers.
Cons: Once in a while the rt2860 wireless card will stop working on me. It might be an OS specific problem. The small keyboard takes a little getting used to.
Other Thoughts: Overall this is a completely functional laptop that can be used like any other full sized laptop. If you are a novice user, you might want to consider getting one of these with windows already installed on it. Xandros might be good enough for some people, but I found it to be too stripped down and not very customizable.

Cool if it boots
Pros: Small, light.
Cons: I received my machine on Christmas Eve, got my RMA the day after Christmas. It would boot only occasionally. When it would run it was a cool machine, but the frustration of spending an hour or two removing the battery, putting in the battery, starting from just the power supply, pressing F9 or F2 repeatedly was a real buzz kill. It wouldn't even start up to the BIOS screen -- just the power LED and a few LEDs on the front. In the times I could get it to boot, I did all the software updates and the BIOS update. Even reinstalled the system software. Nothing did the trick. It would run, I'd turn it off, then pull my hair out trying to get the thing to boot even to the BIOS level.
Other Thoughts: NewEgg was gracious enough to accept the return. Anyway, I'm not sure if I'm going to try again for the eee 1000.

Great laptop!
Pros: Bought this because I teach computer security. I blew a couple disks in my back, and could no longer haul around my big 17" laptop. This thing is great! Put eeebuntu on it, and everything just works. Keyboard is no problem, works well. Screen is large enough so that I can actually work, and the whole thing weighs less than 3 lbs. Also the battery is fantastic! Get anywhere from 5-7 hours depending on what you are doing. It is also whisper quiet.
Boots fast, and is much more than just a "netbook." Sure, it will browse the web, play music, video rtc. But it will also run a lot of Linux software. Quite a powerful platform if you need it to be! It will also handle Windows if you want to go that route: XP, Vista, even Seven. I wouldn't expect that it will run the latest games or anything, but it will get your work done! Great for students, telecommuters, IT techs. Anyone who needs a light, mobile platform!
Cons: The OS supplied, while fine for most users, just didn't cut it for me. I needed something with considerable more oomph. I installed eeebuntu with netbook remix (nbr) and am very happy with it so far. If you are a power user, you will definitely want tto be changing the operating system.
Newegg normally gets things to me VERY quickly. I was dissapointed at how long this took, about nine days. Not really Newegg's fault, but it caused an issue or two because I needed the device! I have the black one, and the thing is a fingerprint magnet!
Other Thoughts: This is the best price I have found by far for this netbook. I actually bought the black one from Newegg, but couldn't comment on it there because they are out, and doesn't look like they are getting more. Hope that doesn't mean there was something wrong with them lol
I also have bought a two gig stick of ram for this thing. It is fast already, but maxxing out the ram can never hurt! also looking to get a "skin" for it, and perhaps some larger, faster ssd drives. BTW, you can't put a hdd in this thing, you have to use ssd. However they are whisper quiet, and quite nice. Just waiting for more people to make them, and for the price to come down.

Couldn't be happier...
Pros: Small form-factor, about the size of one of those composition notebooks. Long battery life. Boots up in about 25 seconds. The pearl white color is better than I expected, and isn't the cheesy dentist white of a mac. For the price I paid I honestly could not be more pleased. I have yet to install XP and see how that runs, but the simple Xandros based UI is just fine for what my girlfriend uses it for. The padded sleeve is wonderful and once zipped up you would never guess there was a laptop inside. The LCD has good viewing angles also.
Cons: I wish you could change the background image separate from the color scheme. Also the clock cannot be changed from 24 hour time format. These are both software issues and shouldn't apply at all since you can just install another OS, or just buy the xp version. Asus may also release a patch for this stuff, or you can do it yourself if your feeling frisky enough.
Other Thoughts: Bought this for my girlfriend as a Christmas present. She absolutely loves it. She carries it in her purse to school and forgets it's there :] Newegg had it shipped to me the day before Christmas, when just I ordered it the night before, for free!

I'M INLOVE
Pros: - Fast flash based 40GB - Excellent keyboard - Long battery life - Excellent connectivity (wireless & bluetooth works great) - High quality hardware
Cons: - I wish the right shift was on the other side of the up arrow, and bigger
- screen resolution COULD be higher, but not a big deal - wish it came with 2GB of ram (for more money)
Other Thoughts: I love this laptop.. its SO small, light, and awesome. It has everything I ever wanted in it, and its shiny and slick..

Fine hardware, outdated software
Pros: Can't complain about the hardware. Solid state storage, LED-not-fluorescent backlight are nice. It's an x86 processor and you can install a different OS. Not forced to pay for an unwanted Windows license. Quiet, space-efficient, power-efficient, good enough performance.
Cons: As of last night (2008-12-09), ASUS' updating service still left me with outdated Firefox and Thunderbird, and the system libraries are too old to run Firefox 3 or Flash Player 10. The installed kernel does not include iptables support. The script that was supposed to automatically connect to a wireless LAN after a reboot failed to handle the case of non-broadcast SSID. OS configuration is stripped down to handle a single user only. Not much technical documentation from ASUS. Development tools and ASUS' modified kernel sources are cumbersome to obtain and install; they should have been included.
Other Thoughts: All problems can be fixed or worked around if you search forums for technical details and fiddle with it, but I expected more out of the box. Currently if you switch distros you have to fiddle with the wireless drivers. Hopefully within a few months the needed drivers will be included in all the distros.

Wonderful little machine. Perfect for class!
Pros: Small, but bigger than the 700/900 series, so it fits bigger hands well. Battery life is spectacular (over 7 hours with web browsing and word processing! 5+ hours for mix of all). "Easy Mode" is perfect for beginners and children. This thing is perfect for me with class for a few reasons: 1) It's no super computer, so I'm not tempted to play my "up-to-date" video games in class. 2) With this Linux distro, I have to go out of my way to make most video games work, which keeps me paying attention in class. 3) This battery keep going and going so there's no panic to find a plug or a seat close to a plug, while in class.
Cons: The default Xandros OS is a little limiting, "Easy Mode" is a bit watered down, but easily switched to "Advanced Mode" with help from the wonderful online Linux community. I'm more a fan of Gnome compared to KDE, but an installation of Ubuntu quickly fixes that. I can see how the "right" shift key would get annoying, but I never use it, so no biggie for me. I knew there was no CD drive while going into the purchase so I knew what I was getting. So really, no complaints.
Other Thoughts: For those who care to do so, there is so much help out there for questions concerning Linux OS that switching to another distribution seems like a no-brainer. A neat little piece of info: The tiny 45nm processor uses the metal casing on the back of the keyboard for its heatsink which dissipates heat nicely! Neat idea!

asus eeepc1000
Pros: Cheap Light, very mobile Great battery life Nice screen Chinese language integration Great pre-installed application set
Cons: Locked up when I changed the display theme, reboot fixed it Arrives with about 28Gb free space ASUS skimped by not just tossing the option of Windows into the default. The bundled Linux OS is good and made just for the eee1000 but its a free platform, and uses all freeware. The "Windows support disk" should be a "Windows install disk" The touchpad clickers make a loud "clack" noise when you push em. Can't modify the OS from within the user interface (background image, color scheme, icon style/arrangement, taskbar) Lag when running music in the background, could be application associated
I am definitely settling for the software... settling...
Other Thoughts: The eeepc1000 is a great little computer, lightweight and with almost a full size keyboard typing is comfortable except for the right shift key, which I rarely use. Powers off and on very quick. Applications run fast. Updating is automatic. Sometimes random stuff happens and I don't know how I did it or how to recreate the random occurence, but thats characteristic of Linux not this computer.

Great Purchase
Pros: Good keyboard layout/size, User friendly OS for novice Linux users, lightweight and portable, customizable for extra storage
Cons: Right shift key is a little small and hard to get to, I've run into some random web browser freezing when surfing the web
Other Thoughts: When I purchased this product it came bundled with a .1 MP external webcam but this laptop has a built in 1.3 MP webcam. Not sure of the reasoning behind this. I originally bought an Asus eee 2G Surf but the size was a bit too small for my everyday tasks. This model provides more than enough screen space with a much larger keyboard. Anyone looking for an ultra portable laptop for basic web browsing/office needs should consider this product.
