Rating + 5 IT's XP!

Pros: Its XP! This is a great OS. Very stable and very easy to operate (especially for users migrating from 95/98/ME/2000) The OS can be tweaked to accomodate all of the users needs. Very high software and hardware support levels. Best of all this OS is VERY efficent. Its hardware requirements are very low and allow machines that struggle with Vista to fly with XP.

Cons: 1. Its outdated
2. Support will soon go
3. Windows 7: the OS to be released sometime next year should cure some of the Vista issues and make XP obsolete.

Other Thoughts: *Speed
*GUI
*Customization

Rating + 5 Why you need to buy this, quick!

Pros: Buy this now, Microsoft quit producing copies June 30th of 2008, as I write this newegg only has 28 copies left in their inventory and they lose about 10 a day. Once they are gone their isn't anymore folks! (If you want to see how many they have left add this item to your cart and change quantity to 999, it will correct you with how many they have left in their inventory).

Cons: Microsoft said only the retail version will they allow a patch to be made where activation isn't required after they quit supporting Win XP next year. OEM versions will still have to be activated and you will have to do it by phone! Plus they will only activate after you've proven to them that your OEM copy isn't stolen.

Other Thoughts: I've bought 3 copies of XP OEM for my 3 computers, however if I ever had to reinstall after XP is no longer supported I will need this retail version to do it smoothly.
Also check MS's website and search for "future of windows xp" to learn more.

Rating + 4 It's XP Pro

Pros: With XP Pro you really don't have to worry about something that's not supported like Vista requires newer hardware and updated drivers.

Cons: Microsoft is cancelling XP along with it's support.

Other Thoughts: I ordered a Retail copy of XP Pro just incase I wanted to use it in the future. My current setup was installed with a system builder's version that will only work on this specific PC. It's nice to have the Retail version.

Rating + 5 @ Andrew

Pros: XP por is a great OS, very stable since SP2. Pretty much compatible with anything out there, and takes a lot of messing around to get it to bluescreen.

Cons: None, really. It's a good OS.

Other Thoughts: From the screenshots I've seen, Windows 7 is merely Vista SP2. Will you still buy 7 after spending so much time bashing Vista?

Rating + 5 Hey Windows ME--err Vista, eat this

Pros: More stable and efficient than Windows Vista. Uses less system requirements, and most games that are "fully unlocked" in Vista actually lock you out to force you to upgrade. Every game that I have played like that has been patched by me to allow me to max the settings in game.

Cons: Depending on what you use it for, much less eye candy than Fedora 9, my workstation OS of choice. I dont need eye candy on my gaming rig except in game, so I run XP.

Other Thoughts: To the previous person who says that Vista is the future, you go ahead and think that. I know a few people that said that about Windows ME as well. XP to Windows 7 will be the upgrade path for me. I have Vista, and yes I bought a $270 copy of Windows XP to upgrade to. Turns out microsoft has it backwards, they dont understand that XP *UPGRADE* CD should be able to UPGRADE Vista. I'll wait for SP2, by then Windows 7 will be out.

Rating + 5 Still the best

Pros: Its Windows XP with service pack 2, you can install this and never update it and you will still have one of the best OS's out there.

Cons: having to download SP3, even though its worth it

Other Thoughts: Anyone still complaining about XP "sucking" is still using a hacked version they got in early release. A Genuine copy of XP with all the updates will run like a champ on any computer built up to 3 years ago. Its "foot print" is still very small compared to Vista.

Rating + 5 This is so comfortable

Pros: I am back using only winxp. vista was so uncomfortable to use when it was installed for about 4 months on a high end alienware machine. I never could figure out whether it was vista or the machine, vista or the motherboard, vista or the memory, vista or my mother...whatever. it is not worth it. the dx 10 games do not behave better in vista than anything that I have played worked with winxp. if you have other components that support good framerates and compelling visual and sound quality, the sacrifices one has to make to baby vista along is not worth the loss of time. if you work for a living, have duties that cannot be abandoned to install yet another hotfix, after figuring out that that is what was missing from the jigsaw puzzle called vista, then spend your money on better hardware, on another new game, and winxppro alone like me.

Cons: of course the problems with using more than 2GB of memory, the absence of directx10 are 2 pseudo-problems in my opinion, something to blame instead of patiently saving up to get hardware that is more able to produce happy computing than some half-baked product like vista. building my own rig for the first time this Spring taught me to tolerate the limits of each component for the first time in my 16 year love affair with computers. My new build includes a wealth of good hardware, which I am happy to be using with "only" winxppro. the games work just fine, and if one adapts the settings according to the information that is available on many of the fine enthusiast websites open for your research efforts, then you can stop reading, build a satisfying rig of your own and enjoy relatively solid performance within the limits of the known universe of computing, instead of being a beta tester for vista.

Other Thoughts: being an enthusiast does not mean being irrational and hysterical when the unrealistic beliefs we accept from advertising do not in fact come true without restriction. I got all caught up in the advertising for vista like some of the journalists in our computing community. Still the expectations continue to be less realistic than not. I can play for hours now in winzp without having to be looking around for the next fix for the newest previously undiscovered problem with vista. and my ipod, my fine old epson photo scanner and printer, continue to be useful, instead of problematic because I kept insisting on using vista before going back to winxppro. enuf said.

Rating + 5 Good stable OS

Pros: Good OS, it's stable and it works. Easy to use and work with as well. It's also pretty much standard at many workplaces and public facilities.

Cons: Not to many, it's no longer the latest, but it's most certainly in the list with the greatest, along with Windows 2000.

Other Thoughts: Unlike many here, I'm not a Vista hater, I'm using the business version as my primary OS on my work computer, home computer, and tablet. Vista is a nice OS in my opinion. I do need a retail copy of XP though since I've never owned it legally on my desktop (Vista is legal, I bought it here as an OEM and it was OEM on the tablet). I want to have a good retail version of XP available though for working on and eventually to install in a VMWare Fusion based environment on a yet to be purchased MacBook Pro.

Rating + 5 Still the best OS if you game

Pros: Still the best choice for all around compatibility with software and hardware. Runs well on almost any system with support for printers, scanners and sound cards. I finally switched from 2K last year to maintain compatibility with newer software. For those recommending OEM versions, they seem to forget that the retail version can be reinstalled on your new computer when you upgrade as long as you remove it from the old computer. The OEM version is tied to the initial computer it's installed on.

Cons: High price

Other Thoughts: If you want to be able to legally (according to MS) be able to reinstall XP as many times as you want as you rebuild your system, buy the retail version. I know there are ways to cheat the system and lie to move the OEM version to a new computer but you take the risk that MS may figure out how to stop that in the future.

Rating + 4 It's Microsoft

Pros: It's better than Vista, still. Most of my clients prefer XP to any other OS.

Cons: If you change your system configuration (as it told me 'significantly'), it will tell you to reactivate your copy (even after 3 years!) If you try to use the same key, it'll make you buy another one. If you don't, you can't get more Windows updates because the WGA tool will assume you've pirated your copy and deactivate your OS in three days until you get a new key. Microsoft is thieving money from my pockets! ARGH!

Other Thoughts: I like XP, but Win98SE was the most stable I've had. I dislike Vista, 2000, and ME. Actually, I think I'll just run a UNIX system and forget MS everything.

Pros: XP is by far the most sought-out and highly used Operating System created and used by Windows and Microsoft next to Server 2003. When people complain about how they "build pc's" and have to buy this, buy the OEM VERSION! It's nearly half the price, and since you're already buying the products to meet the pre-requisites for purchasing, you shouldn't have an issue!

Cons: None.

Pros: Since windows vista is GARBAGE, XP is the best windows I have seen and used, I built 15 pcs and I used XP, and I didnt have any problem while building them and using them.

Cons: BUT COME ON NEW EGG, whats up with XP price? xp is the best os but you have to lower its price guys, I cant build pcs anymore, it doesnt make sence spending 285.00 more dollars if you spend 750.00 for a basic pc. I love new egg but I hate XPs price, do something new egg, come on.

Other Thoughts: like I said, XP is the best OS out there, I run xp in my pc and I can say that Its a monster...

Pros: MUCH better than vista by a long shot, nowhere near the amount of bugs and annoying security prompts when you open or close any given program

Cons: PRICE. as a previous poster said, newegg should be ashaimed of themselfs, yes XP is still the OS of choice for 90% of the people out there because vista dropped the ball big time but come on, ONE copy of XP pro for verry close to the same price as a 3 pack of vista premium? somthing there is just plain wrong. news flash newegg.... higher prices LOWER the number of buyers, espesioly when the current price exceeds the original price

Other Thoughts: lower the price by about $80 and im willing to bet good money that your sales on this OS will sky rocket

Rating + 3 Best OS MS has put out ...

Pros: Works with most games and all of the mid '90s software that I own. All of it. Pretty amazing performance out of programs like Freelance designed for W95 and 486 computers I'll tell you.

Cons: Hmm ... bad hardware detection compared to any recent Linux distro, but the drivers are almost always there.

I find you need to re-install every couple of months to keep it fast, as XP slows down after a couple of months use. Could be me installing drivers and programs, but I've seen this for years. I reinstall 2X each year routinely.

Sometimes XP updates screw up something like my online sound at work. Install the "update" and hose your sound. I've seen this with a USB port on a different MB as well.

Other Thoughts: Recent distros of Linux are so much better than XP it's not funny. When I reinstall XP, all my programs and drivers, antivirus, antispyware, yada yada yada, it pretty much kills a day. I reinstall PCLOS2007 in 30 minutes with all the updates and programs that are equivalent to 6-8 hours of XP installation, with more or less the same functionality. The good news, of course, is that XP is 10X better than Vista, even with the Vista updates that Ballmer thought would not be needed. Well Steve, Vista sucks and you're playing into Linus and Steves' hands. Better keep XP on the shelves until the next OS.

Pros: It's stable, what more could you want from Microsoft....

Cons: XP production will be going on into 2008. Why is Newegg hiking the price already? I bought this in July 2007 and it was nowhere near this price.

Other Thoughts: Shame on you newegg, some of the people are buying this OS because of Vista, didn't you get enough of their money already?

Rating + 5 Good and Stable

Pros: Very stable operations. And when it does lock up for some reason, with most programs it allows you to save your work and shut down the troublesome program without having to restart Windows. Plus all of the extra security measures thrown in to SP2.

Cons: none that I can think of off the top of my head

Other Thoughts: I have been an MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) for about 2 years now. I have read some reviews on here accusing Newegg of supposedly price gouging. Come on people, wake up and read the product description, it says RETAIL. Retail means you can install and activate it on one computer and then uninstall it and move it to another computer. You can't do that with the OEM edition that costs a lot less that you claim to have gotten. This is not the same edition. And believe me, if you buy this you are getting what you pay for. On a side note, I have not had the chance to test Vista yet, but I am in the process of building a system that can handle it. Peace out ya'll.

Pros: I am very curious on why people are downgrading this product which seems most of them like it. THIS IS NO VISTA SO DONT RATE IT AS VISTA. If XP Pro is faster then Vista gives this product a 5 star and rant about vista in other:

Cons: Price is still very high. Not media center edition

Other Thoughts: Pro is very nice and comes with multiple security features that Home did not have.

Pros: XP professional allows you to fully utilize what XP can do. Its stable, its quick, its easy. It can do anything that any other Operating System can do and play games as well.

Cons: None really.

Other Thoughts: Stop downing Vista because you didn't bother trying to do anything the right way. I have been using Vista Ultimate since launch date and beta tested it as well. I have no trouble using any software on it that was written for XP. Obviously if the software was written for Windows ME and before it will not work properly. That software didn't work on XP without emulating it either. Maybe you should research the issue before completely downing the product.

Rating + 4 Vista ROTS!

Pros: Windows XP is one of the most user-friendly OSs on the market, and I've tried several others. Vista stinks so bad that Pepe Le Peu has nothing on it! I just bought an HP laptop that has everything going for it...for the sole purpose of running Final Fantasy XI and World of Warcraft. I also wanted to play arcade games that I bought. Nope! Back to XP!

Cons: The PRICE! Newegg, what are you thinking?!

Other Thoughts: You would think that Vista would do like XP did...be backwards compatible and easy to use. We're supposed to ditch hundreds of dollars of software because Vista is picky?! I don't think so!

Rating + 1 SIMPLY SAID - DON'T BUY VISTA

Pros: Bought a new Dell laptop with duo-core processor and two gigs of ram plus every bell & whistle offered. Great computer!!!

Cons: The bad news it came with Vista Ultimate. Don't let them lie to you, there is NO WOW FACTOR. It's absolutely horrible. So, as an alternative I bought a new hard drive, loaded XP Pro only to find the computer is roughly FOUR TIMES QUICKER IN XP THAN IN VISTA. There's no drivers problem like with VISTA. VISTA is so bad that Dell is now offering purchases in XP or VISTA. I think that says it all, don't you?

Cons: Older system. It is required to keep from the Vista nightmare.

Pros: The best system produced by MS in my view, I can honestly say I have never seen a blue screen except when I got a faulty memory stick.

Cons: The price now being asked.

Other Thoughts: Newegg from whome I have bought every single bit of hardware since I arrived in USA late 2004 have really dissapointed me on this one why the $130 hike in price over the same product in late 2005, sorry Newegg I call it gouging

Rating + 5 Stable, compatible, plenty of features, hardware support.

Pros: Widest variety of software available. Very stable. Great hardware support. Easy to use. Microsoft really got it right with WinXP Pro: it's a great marriage of the stability and administrative/networking features from Windows 2000 with the gaming support of Win9x; and added support for newer hardware and media devices.

Cons: Install CD doesn't natively support SATA as boot drive - requires antiquated 3.5" driver diskette.

No plans for DirectX 10 for XP.

Other Thoughts: I had to write a review to dispute all the critics.

Many complain about stability: on the extremely rare occasion that I've seen a blue screen on an XP machine, it was because of bad memory or a bad video card. So long as you keep XP updated, have decent and updated AV installed, run working hardware with adequate cooling, XP runs solid - more stable than Win2000. That's not to say that there aren't applications that may crash or hang, but that's not XP's doing - at least XP doesn't die when apps do.

Horrible GUI? That's largely subjective - I get around without a problem and always like that's there usually 3 or more ways to do anything.

No memory leaks like previous versions: I can run XP for weeks on end without a restart.

WinXP + Norton Internet Security + Router = rock solid. Don't be so quick to blame the OS for your 1d10t and PEBCAK errors.

Pros: High compatibility, no proprietary hardware requirements.

Cons: Relatively unstable, unfriendly to users (read: horrible GUI,) has some compatibility issue, often related to third part drivers. Only runs natively on x86 processors, which are(thankfully,) on the way out. It's also freaking expensive, especially for what you get.

Other Thoughts: It's all but required for users of many applications, particularly games. But of course, you knew that.

Cons: It only took about two months for me to start getting teething problems with this OS. I run a tight ship and keep away all viruses and spyware so I'm baffled as to why I'm routinely getting blue screens of death.

Rating + 4 More convenient because it's less convenient.

Pros: - Stable enough as long as you stay on top of updates.
- Compatible with almost everything.
- More convenient because it's less convenient.

Cons: - Not as bad as XP Home Edition, but there are still about a million of those notoriusly useless features. (No, I dont want to try AOL, AT&T, Compuserve, or MSN).
- Too difficult to remove most of the software that comes with it. (Internet Explorer, Accesories, etc)
- Spyware eats it alive without additional software.

Other Thoughts: Doesn't recognize my 250gb Western Digital hard drive correctly for some reason.

If you are just some average home internet/e-mail, dvd watching budget user, then go with XP Home. But if you know anything about computers or need decent networking, or if you're a gamer, you cant beat this.

Don't waste your money on the x64 version - hardly any software supports 64-bit computing yet.

Cons: Found 4 bugs, but mainly minor ones. I also can't configure the XP style to use darker colors as somethings refuse to change forcing me to use classic style. Of the 4 bugs 3 are reproducable. Saving in Notepad with wordwrap enabled causes irregular returns (type something at the start of a paragraph after saving). Copying characters from the character map keeps the formatting used by the character map (causing odd effects in text-only mode in Wordpad). The third is when I double-click a graph in the task manager (maximized window), drag it, and double click it again. The 4th is when multiple maximized windows are open, clicking on a nonmaximized window causes a maximized window in the background to change unexpectedly. Other than this, no cons.

Other Thoughts: I upgraded from Windows 98 SE after 5 years of using it since it has been getting very difficult to find compatible software and hardware with it. I got the hang of using Windows XP Pro within just the first day. Games run 50% faster than with Windows 98 under the same settings, position, and angle. I got the retail version as the license of the OEM version seems unfriendly when it comes to constantly upgrading your computer.

Rating + 5 RETAIL vs OEM

Pros: Lifetime license to use. Can be installed on multiple computers (just use one at a time). All hardware/computer changes always supported...will not invalidate the software.

Cons: Costs about $100 more than the OEM Version/"TEMPORARY Version" (see Other thoughts below).

Other Thoughts: Essentially, the RETAIL Version has become the Cadillac, and the OEM Version has become…..uh…….well, do not buy it unless you intend not to change hardware for any reason (and then start praying you never have to)! The extra $100 cost for the RETAIL Version has suddenly become a good investment in something you can continue to use for life. That can no longer be said of the OEM Version (purchases starting in Sept. 2005) which you will now have to throw in the trash can along with that failed motherboard, or processor, or whatever else Microsoft has on their list of hardware changes they no longer support.

Microsoft has seriously degraded support of their OEM Version software. And the full details of this important degradation are not advertised with the customary pre-sale product literature, nor have I been able to find them on the Microsoft Customer Support website. Even the agents of Microsoft, at Microsoft Customer Support, could not direct me to anyplace on the website where

Pros: The Retail version costs more than the OEM version but you don't have to talk a Microsoft Rep when you reinstall. I've had to reinstall 2 times already (1 by mistake, 1 on purpose.). Don't go thinking XP Unstable, its not. Took me a week to make it crash beyond repair when I tried. Much better than the 6 minutes that it takes me to ruin 95-ME. The one by mistake was i installed the gfx drivers before the chipset one and things didn't go to well on reboot.
Super fast boot (though desktop is a little slugish at first.)
Ability to close most unresposive applications without having to alt+ctrl+del and end task.

Cons: 1) The box I received was the Original XP Pro box. I called tech support to get a RMA for wrong item. While on the line, I noticed that Microsoft had reused the old XP boxes and only updated the little "Genuine Microsoft Product" sticker on the bottom of the box. Check that sticker!
2) I managed to make XP not boot up normally twice. The first was that I installed gfx drivers before chipset, and the second not too sure what did it. In both cases XP refused to boot up even in safe-mode. For me previous versions would always boot in to safe-mode, no matter what I did.
3) XP uses the swap file excessively even when only 200MB of RAM is used of 1GB!
4) XP has more updates than I've seen in previous versions. Though I haven't really used the NT-side if windows before and after some research it would seem that all of the NT-side
have several Service Packs while the Non-NT side have none. Dunno if that means they were better or MS didn't care about them.

Other Thoughts: In the month and a half that I've owned XP I have pushed it to it's limit several times.

Rating + 5 Best To Date 4 Microsoft

Pros: XP is very stable, reliable, steady, and looks good too. If you compare this OS to any other Microsoft has released in the past, XP blows them all away in many ways. For one thing, XP includes Service Pack 2 now which also includes a Firewall that is automatically turned on. It's useful until you can get a better one installed.

Cons: I don't know if I can point out too many flaws in XP that are fair to even mention. Spyware started getting bad after XP was released and it's volnerable to many virus and trojen attacks. XP's a great operating experience.

Other Thoughts: I recieved this from NewEgg a couple days after I ordered it. The box was crushed but I didn't complane. I own Windows XP Pro w/ SP2 - - Woo Hoo!!

Rating + 4 OEM vs Retail

Pros: Windows XP Pro SP2 is a great Operating System, So much better then Home Edition...especially when it comes to networking :)

Cons: Retail box comes with a nice booklet and box but is exactly the same as the OEM version. They both only have one User License unless you purchase another license. However Retail is way over priced for that reason.

Other Thoughts: If you have to format your Hard drive or upgrade to a new PC after uninstalling XP from the old PC, you just install it again. Which when you get to Activating the product and if you have problems all you have to do is Contact Microsoft from there number given by the Activation to be able to use the Key again. Its the same for Retail or OEM because they both only have one license!

Comments: For some reason, the install takes less than windows xp home. Pretty expensive. I am not sure if OEMs would work the same, but I don't have to worry about hassles. I wish they had DVD support.

Rating + 5 Forget OEM

Comments: I hear a lot of whoop de doo about OEM being cheaper & it is. What many people do not realize is that OEM software can only be installed on one machine; when that computer is obsolete the software goes out with the computer. Retail software is not limited to just one computer. If your machine is obsolete you are able to remove the OS and then install it on any replacement computer. The may initially be more expensive but in the long run can be a huge savings.

Comments: Its cheaper here at Newegg for the FULL Retail version than what brick and morter stores offer. As for needing a CD case, not really, since you should keep the packaging if you ever need to verify with MS. For what this OS costs, rebox it and sit it on the shelf for all to see much like a trophy.

Rating + 5 Do you have windows Media edition?

Comments: this program will not work on your computer if you have windows XP media edition. It will keep giving you a product key not valid message. Microsoft says it is because of a conflict between media and Professional .

Comments: Yes the OEM version is cheaper but read the fine print:

All OEM software including the operating system is 100% non-refundable once purchased and delivered. OEM versions are intended for system builders only and cannot be transferred to another PC once it is installed. Purchasers of this software are required to comply with the terms of the System Builder License, including responsibility for providing all end-user support.

Rating + 5 Works as Promised

Comments: Windows XP SP2 works as promised. Period. The product does not have the problems and security holes that all the Microsoft-hates would like everyone to believe. Furthermore, Microsoft gets out patches for the product fairly quickly when an ACTUAL problem does arise.
The bottom line: Windows XP SP2 is stable and functional. If you are looking for an Opertain System that you can depend on, go with Microsoft.

Comments: There's really nothing wrong with XP SP2. Yes, well all have our gripes about it, and there are a lot of annoying things that require changing when first installing, but there really isn't much else to use. We aren't yet at the stage for 64 bit, but we will be soon (thankfully). In the meantime, there's no reason to go out and get a piece of fruit.
