Rating + 2 Did not get Rebate either

Pros: Scanner works ok.

Cons: Bought the scanner in February 2008 and sent in rebate within 30 days. Have received nothing since then. I sent multiple E-mails with attached PDFs of submitted rebate to the address on the rebate form with no response. I called once, they took my name and phone number and promised to call back after they checked the status. They did not call back.

Other Thoughts: I'm not completely out of luck since the scanner does work ok, but I'm making it my life's mission to warn others about this manufacturer's unreliable rebates.

Rating + 1 Totally Worthless

Pros: Small. Won't take up much room in your trash can.

Cons: Horrible software. Will NOT work on Vista on my new Thinkpad despite trying others' techniques for one entire day. On XP, scans once after fresh boot. If you then close the TWAIN app, will not relaunch auto or manually. Must reboot. 68 minutes with tech support. No help. Also, for USAA banking members, this will NOT work with Deposit@Home, even under XP. Not even once. From China to your landfill with a frustrating pause in your study.

Other Thoughts: This is the most worthless product I've bought in three or four years. Overpriced unless you can actually make money by buying it. Even then I'd suggest you throw the unopened box away.

Rating + 5 Scanner is working fine

Pros: Much faster than my AIO printer/copier/scanner. Small, USB powered so no extra power brick. Included software useful and works with Windows 98SE (can't count on current peripherals to go back that far). Great deal for price (provided rebate comes through). No reliability concerns so far. I'm happy with it.

Cons: Somewhat steep learning curve with included S/W. Had to play with it awhile to figure out how it works, but OK for the price (included with scanner). S/W won't do searchable PDFs (my AIO scanner, bought over a year ago, will).

Other Thoughts: I trust Newegg more than any other online tech store right now. I think they are more careful with their rebate offers than other stores.

Rating + 3 CHEAP NOT Recommended

Pros: Too Cheap to reject. Do not need a power adapter. Acceptable imaginge quality. Once it is working, it is nice

Cons: Do not support Vista perfectly. Take a little long time to make it working on a WinXP Computer. The software is totally old-fashioned. Get a Canon or something if you want everything simple and clean. This is not some plug&play baby, you might have to play with those software and driver a little bit

Other Thoughts: Plustek should upgrade the software. It least make the UI better(not something like an software in Windows 3.11). Have not tried it with Ubuntu yet, do not expect it to work.

Rating + 3 You won't get the rebate!

Pros: Scanner is convenient and of does an acceptable job, but the accompanying software is poor.

I bought the scanner in December and immediately sent in my rebate application and have heard nothing. There's no web site to check on rebate status, and they don't give you any feedback on receipt or ??

Cons: Small size

Rating + 4 great portable scanner XP laptop 3 years running so far

Pros: I don't intend to use Vista and have not wanted to use Vista, so my review only concerns XP. I have installed the supplied drivers on 3 different laptops (Sony Z505s, Dell Inspiron 700m and 710m) and 3 different desktops (all Asus mobo's). I scan using Adobe Acrobat 4.0, CompuPic 6.23, and Photoshop 5.5-CS2. Decent speed and decent quality.

I travel with this scanner often, in my carry-on thru airport security and in the car, and it still scans like a champ after 3+ years of use. It's USB bus powered and slim.

I paid $50+ back then, but it's still a bargain because of all the use that I've gotten out of it. I also use HP3020 AIO Laserjet for scans. Comparatively speaking, I prefer the scanning s/w on this Plustek over the HP (previews are faster and easier to access dpi, brightness, crop functions).

Cons: The motor squeaks a bit now and I worry that the scans won't be smooth - but still haven't had a problem. Yeah, the USB port is on the side instead of on the back, but so what?

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this scanner based on price, ease of use, scan quality, size, portability, lack of XP problems, and size.

If you buy from NewEgg (one of the few things that I own that I haven't bought from NewEgg) then you don't have to worry about customer service/shipping.

It might not be your primary scanner if you do pro work, but there's no reason why you shouldn't be happy with this scanner otherwise. Face it, if you're looking for a bargain, you won't go wrong.

Rating + 5 Plustek 2420 Scanner

Pros: My Visioneer stopped working. Logged into Newegg for a scanner. Came across the Plustek 2420. Great price. Worked out of the box. Scans, prints, etc. are excellent. Money well spent.

Cons: None!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Other Thoughts: Would have like the USB connecting to be at the rear of the scanner. Minor concern, not a deal killer....

Rating + 1 Does not work!!

Pros: Does not work!

Cons: This is a replacement for the first one I bought . The first half way worked a couple of weeks then quit. I RMA it and Newegg sent new one . The new one does not work. The only think this scanner is goog for is doorstop.

Other Thoughts: Plustek has no customer service. Newegg needs to stop selling this worthless piece of equipment.

Rating + 1 No drivers for Vista 64

Pros: Quite cheap

Cons: No Vista 64 drivers.

"Dear user, The scanner you mentioned does NOT support Windows Vista. Currently we do not have any schedule to develop the new driver which can support Windows Vista. Based on your request, we will ask our software team. If you just purchased this scanner please return the scanner to the place where you bought it. Sorry for the inconvenience. Plustek, Inc."

Other Thoughts: Not worth sending back.

Rating + 4 Very good scan for the price I paid

Pros: Lightweight, no power brick, quicky scans

Cons: Kind of incompatible with Vista, no chance of getting actual Vista drivers from Plustek, poor location of the USB port.

Other Thoughts: Purchased the scanner for parents, so I did not require lots of "functionality" in the first place, but the scanner actually came with a few cool nifty utilities, which can be annoying too. The XP driver installs an utility that starts up with windows and if the scanner is not connected, gives a bugging error message. ABYY reader is teh only thing I installed from the bundled software, so I can not comment on that segment. Preview and scan speed thru Photoshop was pretty fast and quality is surprisingly good for a $20 AR scanner.
However, it does not installs in a Vista 64bit machine no matter what trick you use. 32bit Vista can accept the XP drivers just fine, but forget about that for 64 bit Vista. So that way, teh hardware is kinda limiting without the support of software in some instances.

Rating + 5 Made it work on Vista.

Pros: Sleek, Compact, USB powered that makes me use it more often that not and lets me do the scanning even sitting in the car using my laptop. Sweet.

Cons: - The software does not work with VISTA out of the box. Did a lot of tricks and got this thing working on 2 of my Vista machines.

Other Thoughts: Vista users: 1. Plug the scanner into USB and cancel out from windows driver installation prompts. 2. Install the software on the CD. If it says OS incompatible, right click and set it to run in compatibility mode. 3. Once the install finishes reboot with Scanner connected. 4. Action Manager should load on startup. Press scan button and viola...!. 4. if the software at the scan time prompts for a registry problem, run this piece of software with a rt click and "Run as Administrator" setting and then this error prompt disappears forever.

Rating + 5 Plustek OptiSlim 2420

Pros: Was a gift for my 13 year old. Nice scanner for the money. Got it from Newegg for $40 plus there was a $20 rebate during the holidays.
Another reviewer said it didn't work with Vista but my
daughter got it to work and the quality is surprisingly good.
It's nice and lightweight - a good value for the money.

I'm very pleased.

Cons: None I can think of.

Other Thoughts: It is my understanding that Canon brands many of the same scanners that Plustek offers.

Pros: Very small and light weight. No power cord.

Cons: Included software won't install under Windows XP. I get error Number 0x80040707, Dll function call crash. Tech support is via e-mail and tells me to reinstall Windows.

Other Thoughts: I'd like a full refund so I can get a "Name Brand" unit that wil install without error.

Pros: Unbeatable for the price. It's quiet, quick, USB powered, light, and very thin.

Cons: Not VISTA ready.
It doesn't claim to be, but I wanted to mention it if you are a VISTA user you should be aware of this

Other Thoughts: It's 2002 technology. Not much has changed as fas as scanners goe since 2002, except VISTA compatibility.

Pros: Thin size. Got it for cheap (instant rebates+MIR!).

Cons: SOFTWARE! Makes you install >100mb of horrible software to make it scan. Software is not easy to use and has convoluted controls, esp when it comes to saving you scanned image. But after you get it figured out it won't take that long to scan a couple images.

Other Thoughts: For the price i got it for, its great. Scanned ~40 pictures at 600dpi, they look great on the screen w/o any noise. Scan any higher than 1200dpi though and you'll be waiting for a while.

Cons: The glass was shattered when I got it.

Pros: Small, USB Powered

Cons: Out of date Windows XP software, Don't expect the motor to hold up.

Other Thoughts: I was able to get the TWAIN driver to install in windows VISTA however none of the included software will work in VISTA. To get the TWAIN driver installed explore the CD and right click the setup.exe file. Under the properties you can chose to run the file in windows XP 32-bit mode. This allows you to install it without getting the "wrong operating system error." I can use the scanner to Import from TWAIN in MS OFFICE, and Photoshop in VISTA. Also my last note the scanner motor started to make different sounds after I had make ~20 scans. I don't think it will last very long.

Rating + 3 Will not work with VISTA

Pros: I ordered this from NewEgg, and then realized after further investigation (hindsight), that this scanner might not be VISTA supported. So in order to cut through all the confusion, I called the manufactuer directly, and they confirmed that this scanner WILL NOT work with VISTA, and they have no plans to make it VISTA compatible.

Cons: Too bad, it looked like a nice slim scanner and after the rebate very economical to own.

Rating + 4 So far, so good...

Pros: Only one USB plug (no power cord), good quality fast scans, nice and compact, isn't ugly sitting on the desk, and most important of all -- heck of a good bargain (with rebate)!

Cons: Imaging software (Imagefolio) isn't very good; installation is kind of kloogy -- I got this to work with both Vista (desktop) and Win2K (laptop), and so far it's been more stable running under Vista, even though Vista is supposedly not supported!

Other Thoughts: Unlike the reviewer below me, I was able to install to Vista straight from the CD. At first, I received an "incompatible OS" prompt during installation but Vista gave me an option to retry the installation, which surprisingly worked. Under Win2K, the installation was a breeze, but whenever I disconnect the scanner and subsequently reconnect, it attempts to repeat the entire installation process all over again (as if a new device). Quite annoying.

Rating + 5 OpticSlim 2420

Pros: Doesn't need 110v because it's USB powered, small footprint, good image quality and pretty fast scans.

Cons: Works in Vista, but takes some effort. No info regarding Vista support on the Plustek website.

Other Thoughts: As other reviewers have stated, Vista support is lacking. More specifically, the supplied install CD won't even run in Vista so you can’t install the required drivers to make the scanner work. I was able to get around this by copying the entire CD to a folder on my desktop and then right clicking the setup.exe file and changing the compatibility to run in XP service pack 2 mode (you might be able to change the compatibility mode on the setup.exe file on the CD without copying it to the desktop prior to running it, I didn't try that and it may work). After I did that, all the programs installed and ran fine. Another thing to look out for is that some USB ports may not be able to supply enough current to the scanner so you may get device errors because of that. My front USB ports wouldn't recognize the scanner but when I used the rear USB ports on my motherboard, everything worked great.

Rating + 3 Not Vista Compatible

Pros: I haven't purchased it yet- see below.

Cons: Not compatible with Vista- according to the Man. web page for the 2420. The 2420+ is compatible with Vista

Other Thoughts: I couldn't find any indication on the Man. web site that it was compatible with Vista. Even looked on the Download page for a Vista driver but none there. The web site has a "Vista" link at the top right- click on that and it will provide a list of all the Plustek Vista compatible units. Does anyone know otherwise?

Rating + 4 Device is not but not software

Pros: Device is awesome. Its light weight and powered using USB. I like scan button on the device

Cons: Device and its drivers are good. but the software (ImageFolio) shipped with it is giving problem. Upon pressing the scan button on the scanner, the system opens ImageFolio software that reports "Sti Initialization Error". I have contacted tech support but no reply so far. Interesting the scanner works well with Microsoft scanner wizard.

Rating + 5 Excellent Scanner

Pros: This is the same as the Visioneer OneTouch 7300, which I bought at OfficeMax (unfortunately about 10 bucks more). I needed something small and lightweight for travel, and wasn't expecting much. However this little scanner is one great little piece of gear. Immediately after I bought it I ran about 3,200 scans from family photo albums while visiting relatives. The programmable buttons were extremely handy doing this. When not on the road, takes up very little desk space.

Cons: Absolutely none, even though it costs a bit more than others in the same class. Install the software, plug it in, change the button settings if you want, and you have accurate, headache free scans.

Other Thoughts: Install the software, plug it in, change the button settings if you want, and you have accurate, headache free scans. If you think you know how to scann, go to scantips dot com, and think again. It's a free site that will make you re think what you thought you were doing right. And get your hands on a copy of Photoshop. Once you've done all this, you will be a scanning pro.
