Horrible!!
Pros: It LOOKS nice and it's fast.
Cons: The resolution in the specs (optical) is not available when put to use. I feel as if I had been decieved! This thing only goes up to 1200 dpi! This is garbage! I got this to replace an HP that DID do about 4800 dpi! You can' even trust specs anymore!
Other Thoughts: This was my first Cannon product after my HP died - just because. The quality of the HP is what I would have expected it to be given the specs. This Cannon's quality is no where near as good as a standard scanner. I am not sure why this thing scans at poor quality?
On the HP, I could scan from a magazine, DVD cover or anything and it would look BETTER than the product being scanned! On this one, it does not even look as good! I actually bought this a month or so ago, but just opened it the other day. I did this because I assumed that it would do what it is supposed to do. I cannot deal with this brand again for scanners.

Excellent for Negatives
Pros: This scanner is amazing!!! I bought this scanner for the sole purpose of scanning my Color and B&W negatives, and I'm really glad I bought it. The scanned pictures come out sharp and crisp, and are also rich in color. I've been scanning the negatives at 1200dpi and they come out amazing! I've tried using 2400dpi but it comes out somewhat grainy, depending on the film I used at the time.
Cons: Scanning actual photos only let me use a maximum of 600dpi, which I found odd. I don't care for scanning actual photos though, my main purpose for this scanner was to scan my negatives and slides. Scanning 1 negative at 1200dpi takes roughly about 2.5 minutes, so if you want something fast with the same quality, go spend more money. but then again I really don't care about the speed, I'm just happy it scans nicely.
Other Thoughts: I haven not yet tried scanning slides, but I imagine the output will be just as amazing as the negatives I have scanned. The software is very simple and easy to use, and the scans you get from this scanner are great for the price. I am very happy with this scanner! I originally was using an Epson scanner which did not scan my negatives properly, so I decided to chance it with canon based off of the good reviews, and I've loved it ever since I hooked it up. If you need a scanner for negative scanning, this is your scanner.

Poor Quality and Return Denied
Pros: Worked great for five months only.
Cons: After five months the scanner stopped working, newegg would not accept the return because I no longer had the outer cardboard shipping box (not the cannon retail box, which I did have). Poor quality scanner since it only lasted five months and an unrealistic return policy (who keeps shipping boxes).

Great scanner
Pros: Great resolution, fast scans, very little to no warm up time, very easy setup, and easy to use. Awesome scanner for the price.
Cons: The included driver & software is a little clunky, but not nearly as bad as some other reviewers make it out to be. If you use it to merely scan and save your images and use external software to edit them, it works slick.
Other Thoughts: When you scan photos & documents, use the scanner driver (the little check box above the scan button) instead of their included software. It allows for much more specific scanning options, and unlike some other reviewers said, allows you to use the maximum resolution of the scanner.

Don't purchase if you want to batch scan high quality
Pros: Fast & quiet. Simple to use if you want low / medium quality fast scans.
Cons: I have thousands of old family photos I'm scanning in. My Epson 4490 finally gave out on my so I thought I'd try this one with great reviews. The scanner is good but the software it comes with his HORRIBLE. Unless you do everything manually for each scan, you cannot scan > 400 DPI. For a batch / high quality scanning system, this won't cut it.
My solution: I went back & installed my EPSON File Manager software to control this Canon printer.
Other Thoughts: I had a Epson scanner & loved it. Purchased this because of good reviews.

fantastic scanner
Pros: I have experience with extremely high-end scanners for the print industry. The Canon 5600F is an amazing value, extremely easy-to-use and set up. It also does a very nice job with 35mm slides.
Cons: None!
Other Thoughts: The software even works with my Dragon voice recognition! I can verbally instruct the scanner to scan and save files. It makes it extremely easy to scan a lot of documents without going back to the keyboard.

Great Scanner
Pros: Extremely satisfied with the Canon CanoScan 5600F. Have had it about a month now and have scanned about 400 old slides (Kodachrome, Ektachrome, Agfachrome), 100 color negatives, 200 b/w negatives and around 50 old pics (color and b/w). I would highly recommend using the Advanced Mode in the Scanner Driver for best results. Using the calibration options under preferences before scanning results in very sharp scans. Though I purchased this scanner primarily to digitize old slides and negatives, I have also used it as a copier. As an aside, I use a freeware photo program called PhotoFiltre for final touchup (color balance, gamma correction, sharpness, noise reduction, etc.) of my scans.
Cons: Not a real "con," but the accompanying user manual could be a bit more clear. No "cons" whatsoever concerning the functions of the scanner.
Other Thoughts: Have recommended this scanner to two other persons who have asked about it.

Scanner Review
Pros: It's fast and prints to .pdf like a scanner should. The software is simple. Even my wife can use it without complication (if you knew my wife, you would be impressed).
Cons: None.

Very sharp scans every time
Pros: Very sharp scans. Great contrast, colors are true to the originals.
Cons: I'm using this on a Mac. The software is not clear and concise as it should be, but it eventually gets the job done.

Great Scanner
Pros: Great quality scans , easy to use software.
Cons: Can not think of any.
Other Thoughts: This scanner does scan at optical 1200 DPI , ignore the comments from others who say it does not. There is an option to use the “scanner driver” in the software – this will allow you to scan at 1200 DPI.

Great Scanner!
Pros: Works great! What else can I say; it does everything it says it will. Crisp clean pictures, multi cropping, the back matt shows up as white; unlike my old scanner, white always showed up as a tinged blue color. It's a great scanner... =)
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: Basic mode won't let you scan higher than 600dpi but in "Advance Mode" you can go up to 1200dpi. You need to use the desktop "MP Menu" option ,not the scanner buttons, then check mark the "Scanner Driver" option and then click the "Advance Tab".

Great for Slides
Pros: Excellent image quality when scanning old 35 mm slides. Scanning 4 slides at 1200 dpi takes about 3 minutes. Great for archiving old photos, I scanned four photos at once, the scanner automatically cropped each photo individually and saved them as separate files (major time saver).
Cons: Included software seemed a bit buggy with Vista Ultimate, was able to work around the issues.

DO NOT BUY
Pros: It looks nice
Cons: DOESN'T WORK!!! Simply put, we bought it for the high dpi and Negative Scanning feature, and it will ONLY SCAN AT 600 dpi!!!! This is an outrage. Do not waste your money on this product.

works great on Mac/Leopard
Pros: I love this thing. Right out of the box I had it set up and scanning within 10 minutes. I used the default settings in the application that comes with it and the photos look great! Also, I have this installed on an Intel 24" iMac running Leopard 10.5.5. and it works great! I LOVE how you can scan multiple photos at once and the software auto separates the photos into their own files! Definitely a time saver there.
Cons: I wish it shipped with an outer box to hide the product information. It sat on my porch all day advertising that it was a Canon scanner, for all to see. If anyone walking by wanted a scanner, they would know where to find one for the taking.

Great Scanner!
Pros: Very quiet, worked right out of the box with Vista 64, scans are crisp and clear, good software, has a power switch.
Cons: Non so far.
Other Thoughts: I replaced a $600+ 8 year old Hp scanner with this and am very happy. I swapped the supplied USB cable with a longer Belkin and it worked perfectly. No such luck with the HP. I downloaded the drivers and software, did not use the CD. It does need about a 10 second warm up period. The software seems to work very well, especially when working with older faded photos. All the buttons work as they should. Scans are crisp and clear. It is quite a bit faster than the HP. Hp will not support their scanner under Vista irregardless of the fact that there are quite a few of these expensive scanners still in use. That is a sorry customer service decision. Bye bye HP and hello Canon.

Great Scanner!
Pros: Quiet operation! Clean crisp scans! Good software package! User friendly operation!
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: I like the auto recognize feature (photo or document) The shipping box was the product box and was a little beat up on arrival but no other issues so far. It arrived totally on time as usual with Newegg/UPS.

Great Scanner
Pros: I had a 9 year old Umax scanner and after getting this one I can't believe how fast this scans. I have had no problems with installing drivers and no dust under the glass. The scans are so clear. Like the fact it has a on/off switch, my old scanner didn't and I had to manually shut off the light.
Cons: none so far.
Other Thoughts: Now it's been 9 years since my first scanner and I'm sure they have improved since then but compared to my old scanner (which I thought had good scans also) this scanner scans are crisp and clear. You can also adjust the sharpness, brightness, etc. I wasn't sure about getting this one because I usually read reviews on products before buying, but the model before this was already over a year old and basically the same scanner so I took a chance and I'm very pleased.
