Rating + 1 AVOID AVOID AVOID

Pros: Cheap. Is that a pro? Not really.

Cons: Expensive: Got half a dozen scans for $100. Not working now.

Does not scan well. The problem is in part the amount of dust on the inside of the glass. I've cleaned the exterior meticulously and I find myself touching up dust spots. I was about to take it apart to clean the glass on the inside to see if that would help--really that is not acceptable--it is sealed--how can there be dust if you clean the outside?

Also, I'm not sure why, (Perhaps the light source), the scanner does a better job detecting and scanning the fibers inside the paper instead of the images and colors on the paper. The overall quality is very poor. I regret this purchase and this is the only product I've really felt betrayed with the purchase. Shame on you Canon! I will never buy another Canon product. I vote with my feet. You lose!

Other Thoughts: Does not work with Snow Leopard or Windows 7. This device worked for a while under Leopard with very poor quality. Since my Snow Leopard update it no longer works. Scanner is no longer recognized. Google research shows it does not work with the above operating systems. I've tried updating the Canon drivers and the MP Navigator software provided. I also tried starting the device from the print profile icon. It does not work. Used only a few months of extremely limited use--maybe a dozen successful scans--each of which required extensive re-touching to make acceptable.

I am very disappointed. My old 1990 vintage HP scanner had far higher quality--outstanding really, but became obsolete due to systems upgrades and software incompatibility--this was after many years of high quality scans. If I had the space I'd have one system dedicated to just scanning using that HP scanner.

Canon scanners? A joke. AVOID AVOID AVOID better to use a scanner at Kinkos.

Rating + 5 Nice

Pros: Light, USB powered. I haven't owned a scanner in awhile and was very impressed with the Canon. Scanned about 60 plus photos the first day. Image quality was very nice, nicer than expected. No problems whatsover.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Very light weight.

Rating + 4 Good scanner for the price.

Pros: Great price. Software allows for scanning multiple photos all at one time and saves as separate images. 76 photos in about 20 minutes. Small foot compared to my old HP Scanjet 5600e. Would still be using it too if HP wrote drivers for Vista and W7.

Cons: Slightly noisy but who cares? Had some problems installer to Windows 7. Canon response was quick via e-mail but felt that they didn't quite understand that the MP Navigator wouldn't install... at all. Solution: setup a 2nd user profile and install to that. Not exactly my 1st choice.

Other Thoughts: Would still be using my HP Scanjet 5600e if HP wrote drivers for Vista and W7. Becasue of that lack of support from HP that is my last HP scanner. There is a pattern here. Epson photo inkjet, Brother laser printer, Canon scanner...

Rating + 4 Great little scanner for MacBook Pro

Pros: Portability, good image quality, decent speed

Cons: slight color shift (correctable in Photoshop); image must be FLAT against scanner or it will go out of focus. Others have had problems using it in Snow Leopard.

Other Thoughts: Will run on Mac with Snow Leopard despite reviews to contrary, at least if using MacBook Pro, 10.5.8 and VueScan software (highly recommended). I did have to re-start the software a couple times before sucess, and re-plug in the scanner, but since then no problems. Perhaps Canon software has bug that VueScan can overcome with the right Canon driver. I found this scanner gave as good, sharp an image as Epson 4990 Photo scanner, and it is one-third the size and one-fourth the price (though it does not scan slides/negatives like the Epson does). I found slight color shift to green in my scanner but not bad enough to return it. Also, your scanned item must be FLAT against the glass or it will be out of focus (very limited depth of field here); if needed, use a piece of mat board or similar firm flat object to flatten items better than the scanner lid can do. I found this a minor inconvenience and still like the scanner a lot for "location scanning"!

Rating + 5 GREAT SCANNER

Pros: Loads on 64bit Windows 7 right out of the box-
Super fast scans-
Great color reproduction on photos-
Comes with a decent software selection if you already don't have photo editing or document creation capability, I didn't install it but the option is there.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a flatbed scanner, consider this Canon as you won't be disappointed

Rating + 5 LiDE 200 Series

Pros: *This is a decent scanner for home use; scanning and archiving simple photos and documents.
*The software and interface appears to be a bit more advanced than prior versions.
*Decent price and quality.
*Functional drivers for W7 64 bit OS.

Cons: None significant.

Other Thoughts: I've used previous versions of this brand and have always had acceptable results. Mind you, this type of scanner is not made for very high-end, professional quality work.

Rating + 5 Fast, high quality and portable!

Pros: -Scans are fast and high quality
-A single USB cord handles data transfer AND power
-Very useful image correction features (gutter shadow correction, dust and scratch reduction, etc.)
-Very quiet compared to other scanners (I use it in the library)
-At 3.6lbs and 1.6" thick, it's a great laptop companion
-Energy use is only 2.5W (1.4W standby) and it only reduces my laptop's battery life by less than 5% when I have it connected.
-High-quality construction that should last for years.

Cons: After four months, I can't think of a single one!

Rating + 5 What a deal!!!

Pros: Great scans, Great price, great service and shipping! Better than any of the previous five HP's I have owned. I love the ability to "batch scan" photos. I am scanning all my old albums for safekeeping. Great storage with the stand allowing upright storage and scanning.

Cons: Haven't found any yet, but if I do, I will correct my review.

Other Thoughts: I run a custom-built 2.47Gh Intel Core2 Quad with 8G ram, two 500 gig hard drives, a nineteen-in-one card reader, and two DVD read/writes with Lightscribe with Windows XP Home. I simply insalled the software then plugged it in. Has been working great ever since! So easy, even an idiot like me can do it. Don't know what others are doing, but I suggest that if you go to install it, read and follow directions to a tee! I absolutely love this scanner. It works great when scanning old photo albums with seemingly endless pictures. Also, I am backing up off-site assuring safe keeping in case of fire, flood, etc. Don't want to lose all my family photos going back several generations. I also scan deeds, agreements, etc. for the same reasons.

Rating + 5 Nice Scanner

Pros: Nice, inexpensive flatbed scanner from one of the best companies out there, Canon. This replaced an eight-year-old LiDE 80, for which there are no drivers for Vista/Win7. I've heard it described as an entry level scanner, but really, who needs more than this? Good for the occasional fax, document scan, or photos. The single function buttons on the front work well and are convenient, but sometimes using the scanner driver works better because you need to adjust the brightness/contrast for the best scan.

Cons: None so far, although to be fair this scanner is very lightly used. At least until I get into a project to archive all our family photos . . .

Rating + 1 cumbersome software

Pros: compact, no external power adapter

Cons: I primarily use the scanner for scanning old color photos so the one click or default settings never work for me. The menus are awkward and inefficient. Click, click, click is all I do. This is my fourth scanner and it only beats a ten year old Pixma in convenience. I'm going to replace this scanner asap.

Other Thoughts: This scanner was to replace an eight year old Lexmark which relied on 2000 drivers. The image quality of the Canon is equal at best and the fast scanning is negated by the awkward navigation of the software. Shame on me for getting rid of my Lexmark.

Pros: Easy set up
Price

Cons: A little on the flimsy side

Other Thoughts: I only paid 50.00 for this item and it was well worth it. Any price under 100.00 would be a steal and it does everything advertized. Obviously it’s not top of the line imaging and it’s not the most durable but for this price you can’t go wrong.

Rating + 5 Great little scanner.

Pros: Quick scanning at 300dpi setting. Photos turn out very nice at this setting as well. Nice basic scanning software is very easy to use and works very well.

Cons: Sometimes I have to unplug the scanner and plug it back in to be recognized by the Cannon scanner program. Could be an issue with my computer though. Only happens sometimes and only takes a few seconds to fix.

Other Thoughts: Bought as a quick replacement and am very surprised at the quality for the price. Didnt notice any better scans using 600dpi setting. Figured it might scan slow using USB power. Doesnt seem to be the case.

Rating + 5 Fits in my laptop case without adding weight

Pros: Everything that I was looking for. Looking at Canon's experience in photograghy, I wasn't surprised at quality of the scanned images. I was surprised that this device could be powered by a USB port alone. The elimination of a power adapter is worth it's weight in gold.

Cons: none

Rating + 4 Great for Photos, Not so much for Magazines

Pros: Excellent Quality photo scans; Great price; Excellent name brand; very compact and light; many settings for different quality levels; can use software or scanner driver to scan.

Cons: Terrible magazine scans.

Other Thoughts: As my review title states, if you are wanting a scanner to scan magazine pages, DON'T BUY THIS SCANNER! Even though it has a setting for "Magazines", it picks up bizzare patterns that are completely invisible to the naked eye in any light. But color/greyscale photos and documents are a completely different story. This scanner produces excellent results. I guess it has something to do with the thin paper magazines are printed on.

Rating + 1 Unusable :-(

Pros: Fast page scan time - 14secs at 200dpi A4 color; one USB cable for comm and power.

Cons: Unable to do the simplest things: give me an honest copy of the page on the scanner and dump the .bmp into a file. The software insisted on trying to color/contrast correct the image (even when using the driver directly and all corrections turned off) - I'm trying to move 40 yrs of old ham radio magazines to a 1TB hd - the pages have yellowed. The best the it could do was produce badly washed out unreadable images. Bought the scanner for the speed improvement over an existing LIDE-25 - given all the time wasted trying to work around the software, would have been ahead doing the 80sec/page scans on the -25. Scanner also insists on saving the images to a temp space, after which one has to save them one at a time, to where one wanted them to go originally - if one is scanning all the pages 1-> n of a magazine, fine, but if only the article pages, then one has to keep notes of the individual page numbers etc. All said and done: a P.I.T.A. - scanner has been returned to Newegg.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately this is not the first time I've had Canon products, where the hardware was probably better than average, only to be sabotaged by brain-dead software [a slidescanner, a p/s digi cam, an inkjet printer, and now this scanner]. This is our 5th scanner in a dozen years - all the others were able to do simple things reasonably easily - Canon in trying to dumbdown their software... has succeeded in spades. We still need a scanner to complete the project - will probably now buy a HP or ....

Pros: scanner seems to work as descrinbed... always happy with the lide scanners... anyone who has done alittle research with these scanners knows...

regular scanners are great at depth of field. lide scanners are only good for page scans... no deep items like for example if you scan a watch, the face of the watch willl be super blurry...

but, 1 cable for com and power... what more can you ask with great scan quality...

Cons: no cons yet...

Other Thoughts: new eggs fault... they sent me a use item! all the stickers and security tags were stuck onto the box! the outside of the box! and i bought this because i thought it was new? what is going on? platen was dirty, some small scratches on the outer case...

Pros: There aren't very many LED scanners in the market for some reason as I do not know why? These thing is so fast and does a great job just like my Epson Perfection but is a lot faster. No warm up needed.

Cons: I don't have much of a complaint but the sound when scanning is high pitched.

Other Thoughts: Great scanner for the money and the speed.

Rating + 1 Not what I hoped for

Pros: Cheap, light, does not need a power cord. Works with a laptop.

Cons: Scanner picks up every bit of dust--ok I can deal with that.

But it also picks up the texture of the paper which is not visible to the human eye. I look at what I'm scanning and I look at the output and they are not the same.

I'm not sure why but it makes a photo look like it was painted on canvas. A neat effect for the rare artistic moments, but I mostly want to scan photo's into my computer and have them look like the pictures I took.

Other Thoughts: My 20 year old HP has better quality.

Pros: Super quiet. Very easy to operate. Nice that there is only the one USB cord - no extra power transformer. Very light - you could easily carry it to another computer to quickly plug in and use.

Cons: The included software isn't all it could be. Something called MP Navigator EX. Previous scanners I had included OCR and Document Control software--- but then they didnt work with Vista, so I opted for this. I have no regrets.

Rating + 5 Great Scanners!

Pros: Upgraded my old Canon N650U that I bought in 2001.... it has had a busy life and still has more to go. The Lide 200 is by faster, better scanning resolution and has the classic canon quality!

Cons: It doesn't come with a black velvet storage bag! I guess I will have to make one for it!! (My N650U uses a burlap carry bag! HAHA!)

Other Thoughts: By far the Canons will outlast any other scanner (experience dictates) and theses are juf flat out fantastic scanners. Thin too.

Pros: relatively fast scanning

Cons: i don't care really, but the sound of this scanner is scary

Other Thoughts: bought this one new and when I scan without an object, white lid, then there are appears a pattern of faint vertical lines. I dont think they are bound to the individual pixel sensor, but they are about 1 or 2 pixel apart, and there are maybe 8 lines per group and groups of lines are about 24 pixels apart. this is under 300 dpi color scanning, anyone had this too? should I exchange?

Pros: Fast, USB powered, small footprint. The Canon-provided twain interface for Windows is a bit clunky for my taste, but it gets the job done. The scanner also works with WIA under Vista for those who want to go that route.

Cons: No Linux support through SANE as of this review. Canon should make an effort to support the community on this..

Other Thoughts: The scanner hardware works perfectly and is well designed, but the absence of Linux support is annoying- hence the 4/5 review.

Rating + 4 nice scanner, clunky software

Pros: Relatively fast scanning speed, nice image results. Single USB cable for data and power is nice. Windows Vista x64-compatible by downloading 64-bit drivers and software from Canon's product support pages.

Cons: The accompanying software. Although I downloaded drivers and software for Vista x64 and everything works as it should, the software is not very intuitive. Saving files and renaming them is a bit of a hassle compared with most other applications. Also limited to JPG, TIFF, and BMP, if I recall correctly. PNG would save some disk space while still being lossless.

Other Thoughts: I'm happy with the scanner so I'll just make do with the software to manage the scanning chores.

Rating + 5 Excellent low cost scanner

Pros: VERY fast scanning for the LIDE series scanners, USB Bus powered, no power brick neccessary, slim & attractive design, easy dynamic TWAIN interface in Photoshop, LED light source for the "green" types, reasonable price for a quality scanner.

Cons: Lid if the scanner has very little weight to it so it is sometimes necessary to add pressure to the top of the unit if the item you are scanning is creased.

Other Thoughts: This is the 3rd LIDE scanner I've owned. Started with the 35, then got the 70 because it went to USB 2.0, and now I bought this one for it's increased speed. The scan quality between the 70 and 200 is pretty much the same from what I've found, but the 200 is considerably faster. I usually scan things at 600 DPI and a full platter scan takes less than 30 seconds.

Rating + 3 good hardware, bad software

Pros: Small, lightweight, single cable - USB provides power to the unit. Fast, high quality scanning at 1200 dpi.

Cons: Although advertised to scan up to 4800 dpi, the max resolution available (at least using included driver and software) is 1200. Don't know if different software or driver would help - I expect a new product to work as advertised out of the box.

Other Thoughts: I did not like the included software at all. It seems to be geared toward the "single button" user. There's not even a "save" or "save as" button on the scanning window - you have to close it to manage files. Trying to specify file name, format and location (if different from the defaults) was too frustrating, and after a few hours I gave up and returned the unit. Too bad, because the scanner itself is really nice.

Rating + 5 It works

Pros: The scanner, well, scans, and is cheap. I use it to archive my documents from classes so I don't have a bunch of paper lying around. It's USB powered, so no messy cables. It actually has a pretty decent program for Mac OSX(MP Navigator EX) which does scanning multiple pages into a PDF, copying and OCR.

Cons: Sometimes small vertical lines(not text) disappear when using the scanner. I haven't really looked into the causes of this. Also, the scanner doesn't have an automatic document feeder which is a bit annoying when scanning a bunch of pages at once. The scanner also does not support duplex scanning, but that's a feature found only in expensive scanners.

Other Thoughts: I haven't tested the scanner with photos or anything other than black-and-white documents but I'd expect them to turn out fairly well.
