Rating + 5 Great scanner - but...

Pros: Great scanner! Does exactly what it says it will do. Has saved us a lot of time. Great hardware!

Cons: Really only does pdf documents without a hassle. You can do a bitmap, but you have to be creative. In any case most docs are stored as pdf files anyway. Don't have a hard dive crash, Adobe will give you fits about re-installing your software...they try to make you buy it again!

Other Thoughts: Purchased 2 of these scanners. Both had $50. rebates from Fujitsu, but just like a hard drive purchased 2 years ago, Fujitsu never paid the rebates. So if you are looking for a good scanner this might be it, but the rebates probably will never come, so if they advertise one, don't count on ever getting that check.

Rating + 5 Awesome Fast Scanner-Great Product!

Pros: I found this scanner to be quite simle to use. I am very impressed with the scanning speed. This awesome scanner has saved me many hourse scanning documents I had saved over the years. Although I own a flatbed scanner I needed something to move alot faster and get it into PDF files.

Cons: The only thing I ran into was scanning a large number of documents in which some were upside down for some reason and some of my color documents came out black and white. I haven't quite figured it out yet.

Other Thoughts: Just strongly recommended.

Rating + 5 Great Job!

Pros: Easy to set up, operate, and quick to scan. I bought this for 1 intention only, to scan my reports. This device has already saved my over 2 hours of work this week alone. In my work I scan 13-15 page reports and now can e-mail them within 3-4 minutes. My old scanner would take about 20-30 minutes per report after set-up. I will adapt this to my entire office as I am in the process of continually greening my business. Time saved for me is family time. I own and operate 2 businesses so I need simplicity. I feel very good about this small investment.

Cons: I am sure there are some, but for now, nothing.

Rating + 5 YES...this is Vista 64-bit compatible

Pros: Contrary to what others have said below, the S510 *IS* in fact compatible with Windows Vista . . . both in the 32-bit and 64-bit editions. What is key to know is that the 64-bit drivers (embedded in the ScanSnap Manager software) are unfortunately NOT included on the CD that comes with the scanner. What you need to do is call/e-mail Fujitsu customer support and ask them to e-mail you a link to the private software repository that contains the 64-bit software/drivers (it only took me about 2-hours to have the link e-mailed from the time I requested it).

Cons: The CD doesn't have the 64-bit drivers/software contained on it to begin with (you have to request it from tech support). Additionally, this does not have TWAIN drivers (i.e., can't network the scanner or have 3rd party applications such as Photoshop directly control the scanner...you need to use the ScanSnap Manager interface to do the scanning).

Other Thoughts: Superb product! I've actually owned the ScanSnap from the first day it was released a number of years ago (I'm on my 3rd scanner at this point!)

Rating + 5 Scansnap purchased in '06 and still lovin' it

Pros: I bought my Fujitsu Scansnap the end of 2006 and have been using it every day of the work week since and it still works great!
Everyone who has used mine has wanted one and several of my co-workers each bought one and we all can't imagine doing our jobs without them. I use mine to scan documents and upload the pdfs to different systems but I also love to use it in place of sending faxes. I simply scan and e-mail my documents. No more fighting with a fax machine or having people say they didn’t get it. It's so fast and crystal clear plus having an electronic trail rather than a paper one is awesome!

Cons: none.

Rating + 5 Unbelieveable

Pros: Incredibly fast speed. I was able to scan and OCR over 70 large documents in a few hours after I got it out of the box. Not 1 double feed or jam in that time. I was worried about not having TWAIN support at first, but with the included software, it has no problems doing what it was designed to do.

I'm using it for my home office and personal documents so it's more that adequate for that. I can imagine it would be a bit undersized for heavy use though.

Cons: I was going to say price, but it is one of the least expensive duplex document scanners, so if it's what you're looking for it's well worth it.

Other Thoughts: I usually don't write reviews on my purchases, but I was so impressed with this product, I felt the need.

Pros: The scanner is very easy to use. It is only one button. The software that came with the scanner is bundled well. People have commented on the jamming. Although that has happened it has not been an issue as you learn how to place the documents correctly into the scanner.

Cons: I still haven't received my 50.00 rebate check.....

Rating + 5 Great desktop scanner

Pros: It scans the documents at a reasonable speed (Fujitsu has much faster ones, but much more expensive too). We used one at the office, liked it, so bought another, liked the idea of less paper, so we bought another for the home office. I would recommend it to others looking for a reasonably fast desktop scanner.

Cons: I prefer the OCR on Adobe Acrobat (included) over the OCR included with the ScanSnap software. The Adobe OCR keeps the file size down to a minimum.

Rating + 5 I got it working with Server 2003!

Pros: Fast, accurate, feeds well, cheap (compared to $10k+ document scanners).

Cons: No TWAIN support, limited OS support (see below).

Other Thoughts: After much trial and error, I was able to get it to work on Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 (essentially Windows Server 2003 R2). Set the compatibility options for the Scansnap Manager to "windows XP." Then go to device manager and find the Scansnap S510 under imaging devices, with no driver installed. "Update Driver" and let it search for a driver. It will prompt that it hasn't passed Windows Logo testing, install it anyway. Restart Scansnap Manager and you're good to go! Same procedure should work for other Server 2003 products, maybe also Vista x64 (which I also had trouble with), if you can set the OS to allow unsigned drivers.

Rating + 4 Great scanner with one exception

Pros: Fast, it scans on both sides of the page during one pass, in color. Scan to File are image based PDF's. If you use the SnapScan Organizer you can index the scanned image, making it a searchable PDF.

Cons: Maximum paper length for the ADF is 14", and I've confirmed this on the Fujitsu support website. if you scan a long document, such as a rebate receipt, the scanner stops and says it has a paper jam, when actually it stops because the scanned page is too long.

Other Thoughts: If you have long papers like receipts over 14" in length to scan you may want to look at other Scanners.

Rating + 5 Big job Litte box

Pros: Software support (consecutive scanning feature) with a very reliable ADF made some large scanning jobs relatively fast.

Double sided scanning and automatic color recognition works perfectly.

I needed help from tech support for software support and the information was right on and didn't take long.

Cons: I don't know of any

Pros: Fast, Small footprint, high resolution

Rating + 5 Isle of Perfection

Pros: This scanner represents the absolute perfection of this one simple task. I don't know how you could make it better. It automatically removes blanks, allows any size of paper to be thrown in the stack, auto rotates each page so that the type is vertical, auto chooses color or b/w... And it is very small, fast and simple.

Cons: I had to think hard to come up with one - but here goes. I once had a stack of paper and it kept pulling the first two pages through together. It never happened again. I fixed it by placing the first page slightly staggered from the second. Whoopee. That happens every time I scan with my HP document scanner.

Other Thoughts: I love things that are well designed and do their intended task really well. This is one of those things.

Rating + 5 Great Scanner

Pros: Great installation procedure, always works first time! Have used this scanner on several computers and love it. Fast easy to use and small. Includes Acrobat PDF Standard which is great.

Cons: Like any paper feeding device it is only as good as the paper you are working with. If you have really thin, crinkled or other wise abused paper it will not feed as well. But by far this machine has handled paper better than any of the multi function machines I have used.

Other Thoughts: Have not used their Document management system that comes with the package or their upgrade DMS Rackfiler2 (extra add on package) but from what I have used it I didn't like what I saw.

Rating + 4 Fast and awesome

Pros: Fast and easy to use. Also, this thing is tiny. I read another review that mentioned this, but was still shocked to see how small it is.
The design is very slick.

Cons: I've only used it 5 times so far, but the first two times, it pulled 2 to 3 sheets (of a 10 page stack) at the start. I frayed and separated the pages a bit and they went through one at a time after that.

Other Thoughts: I'll try to update this review after I've used it a few more times.

Pros: works great, fast fast fast. nice software.
Don't listen to folks who complain, they are probably technically challenged this product rox and by the way I'm not a fanboy or anything like that. I wanted to go paperless and decided to fork up the 300+ for a decent scanner and this has been a great success for me. NO MORE PAPER YEA!!!!

Pros: FAST! FAST! FAST!

Excellent paper handling, easy to install. Good all around. Software works perfectly for my purposes. I have installed this same unit in several Dr. offices with the same results.

Pros: Does what it needs to do if you just need a PDF document.

Cons: Will NOT connect with your software to scan directly into medical/billing software. Make sure you get the Fujitsu fi-5110C or Fujitsu fi-6130 if you need a multiple sheet feed scanner with TWAIN support.

Rating + 5 Awsome Scanner

Pros: EASY to use. VERY EASY. Less Clicks is saved time. Less steps to complete a fast scan is saved time. I recommend that you try these scanners. The automatic features are extremely helpful. If you do lots of paper scans at once or sporadic scanning throughout the day, you will like this scanner. I own 2 personally. Several companies I have recommended these to now have 10+ for their desktops (they have several 5K scanners for heavy loads). I like to scan everything for my electronic documentation and toss the paper into a box. No longer am I bound to paper as I used to keep everything. This saves me time.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Room for improvements? Faster! It's fast now, but we can always use more speed. Maybe add a second macro button say to pick a different type of scan (ie photo settings). So the green is for your daily types of scan and the other programable is for specific types of scans. Legal documents sometimes falls off the after-scan tray as the tray isn't long enough so it could use another extension for Legal documents. This is a good scanner and I will be buying a 3rd for my home business. I should be paid as I've already sold people on this scanner (20+ scanners so far)!

Rating + 5 Fujitsu ScanSnap=Must Have!

Pros: Just ordered a third ScanSnap for our accounting office (plus two for clients). The best investment for the money I've ever found. We are able to scan old files to PDF in seconds! Love the fact that Adobe Standard comes bundled - that alone is a huge plus. Also included was ABBYY Fine Reader software which scans to Excel, Word and Powerpoint. NO learning curve, the process is so easy we have interns up and scanning in a matter of minutes. We've eliminated our off-site storage of ten years worth of old files by scanning/shredding/backing up. Add to that Newegg's service - price is very competitive, free shipping and the scanner I ordered yesterday afternoon just arrived this morning. All around, one of the best values out there.

Cons: Had to think to find one - maybe changing the scan profile could be more intuitive, but that's really minor.

Other Thoughts: I have often recommended this scanner to clients and other accountants over the past year, and every one of them has gone on to purchase a second and sometimes a third once they see how productive it is. We aim to have one on each workstation by the end of 2009.

Rating + 5 Just amazing!

Pros: I purchased this scanner almost completely due to the reviews here on Newegg. I was not disappointed - it is an amazing device! After following the simple installation instructions (and skipping certain software components that I do not use), the scanner was up and running. At any time, I can open it, shove some papers in, push the button, and then tell the software where I want the PDF saved. It just doesn't get any easier than that. It does an excellent job of detecting blank pages too!

Cons: Absolutely none.

Pros: It is my first document scanner and I am very impressed how fast documents are scanned. No preheating time, you just click and a second later you have your pdf.

Cons: software does the work just fine but is a little dated to my taste. I would have like to have more dedicated button on the machine instead of just one.

Other Thoughts: Definitely a step in the direction of the paperless office :-)

Rating + 5 Very efficient - can do JPEGs

Pros: As mentioned by others, this is an effective tool for organizing a paperless office. Fast, easy to use, and very cost effective especially given the inclusion of Full Acrobat. Bought one myself, then installed 6 for a client which is going paperless.

Cons: TWAIN drivers would have been a nice feature, but for primary use as a text document scanner this is still excellent.

Other Thoughts: Others complain that you cannot scan as images, but you can. First scan as PDF like normal, then open with Acrobat, go to File > Export > Image > JPEG and it will save at the same resolution as scanned (eg 300dpi, etc).

Pros: Fast, blazing fast, double sided scanning. Comes with Adobe Acrobat Standard included...not the reader.. Scanned files are not that large in size even when scanned in color.

Cons: Can't scan a ton of pages at once > 30...

Other Thoughts: We use the Fujitsu in a legal office environment where every document is scanned. We also have two Xerox's that are much larger and much slower. This is a gem of a product. Highly recommend it.

Rating + 4 Great Scanner, but not TWAIN

Pros: Great fast Scanner!. Its very small and portable. I take it with me to client sites to scan documents. It scans about 30-40 pages quickly without jamming. It will scan a single page front and back in 3 seconds. Great Duplex scanning. Scans files directly into a PDF format and into whatever folder you want. Easy install and easy to use program.

Cons: Not TWAIN compatible. If your office uses 3rd part programs for scanning then this is not the scanner for you. You must use the Scansnap program it comes with.

Other Thoughts: My office uses a TWAIN 3rd party program, however I did still find some use for this scanner. It is great to turn your filing from hard copies to soft so you can take them anywhere with you. It allows me to keep all of my client's files on my server for easy access.

Pros: Fantastic document scanner that zips through piles of double-sided documents. Definitely noticing less paper around the house. Nice and small when not in use... slightly larger than a shoebox. Turns on super fast.

Cons: Requires included software. Not as convenient on a network environment than a (mega-expensive) network scanner.

Other Thoughts: Turns off automatically when folded up.

Pros: Scans very fast esp. in B/W. We outsource our bookkeeping, so we send all our invoices, receipts, statements, and other documents via email. This machine scans all the documents so quickly and the software converts it all to pdf for easy emailing. I can't imagine doing this with a flatbed scanner. It would probably take 10 times as long.

Cons: none that i can think of.

Rating + 2 NOT TWAIN COMPLIANT

Pros: Scanner is small and very convienent... seems to scan a stack of 10 to 20 pages fast and with no jams.. My version came with Rack-2 Filer which is nice for beginners but I prefer Paperport pro... which leads me to the cons...

Cons: This scanner is not WIA or TWAIN compliant and there doesnt seem to be any plans to make it so. You HAVE to use the Scansnap software that comes with scanner. I didnt realize this when I made this LARGE purchase and therefore rendering this scanner useless in my office as we use Scansofts Paperport Pro. You could scan using snapscan and then import to paperport but who needs the extra steps!

Other Thoughts: OK for home user or office without a software solution in place.... shop for a TWAIN compliant scanner if you already use a software package as we do!

Rating + 5 Great Fast Scanner

Pros: Scans both sides of a page at once, feeds documents, fast on lower quality settings, which are good enough for the sort of document scanning I need to do. A well-thought-out workflow that literally eats up file cabinets of old paperwork.

Cons: As others have pointed out, the automatic feeder is overly susceptible to misfeeds (manual feeding is still a lot faster than using a flatbed, though). Also, Acrobat isn't very good at reading multiple documents in the same directory -- you have to launch each document individually rather than cycling through.

Other Thoughts: Other products I like, the Scansnap I love. It's just so good at doing what it was designed to do, scanning large quantities of paperwork that you want to get rid of. And it handles just about anything flat, all the way down to receipts.

BTW, someone mentioned frequent restarts. I had the same problem at first because I was using a 15' repeater USB cable. I put it in a powered hub instead, and the problem went away.

Rating + 4 Love It, But...

Pros: This scanner does a great, fast job of scanning documents and even larger photos (at least 4x6"). You can save directly to jpg or pdf formats (Acrobat Standard is included, which is nice). Really like it for document archive. It's almost perfect, but...

Cons: Erratic paper feeding at times. It misfeeds more than one page way more frequently than I would like, when the document feeder is loaded with multiple pages. At times, I've had to feed the pages one at at time. My experience has been with five or less pages loaded, you will probably be okay. Otherwise, keep your eye on the unit as pages feed.

Other Thoughts: For the price, it is a good value. It performs well, otherwise. Fuji, please improve document feeding performance.

Pros: Scans quickly, duplex, with few jams. It even comes with Adobe Acrobat. Folds down neatly into a rather small device.

Cons: Not networked (but I knew that going in), only scans to PDF, and requires a number of software applications to work properly with it (all included).

Other Thoughts: If you're looking to go "paperless", you really can't do much better than this. I've never scanned so many documents so quickly. I even scanned a 50 page insurance policy without one jam. Just feed and click!

Pros: Great Fast Product! My minimal accepted quality for legibility is at the "best" setting which however is plenty fast enough compared to other scanners and also the duplex option with blank page auto detect is a gift!

Cons: When scanning some thicker sheets there is a minor plastic grinding noise at the end of each scanned paper. This might sound like a concern but for the moment the scans comes out great!

Other Thoughts: worth every cent of your investment even though a bit pricey!

Rating + 5 What a great scanner!

Pros: It's a really great scanner. Fast and simple to use. So easy in fact, you load the document, hit the big green button and it's finished. Anyone can figure that out.

Cons: No cons. Maybe except that the software install took at least fifteen minutes to install of the drivers, but that may be due to the fact of the machine was old.

Other Thoughts: It's really nice and the fact that you get three licenses to Acrobat is even better. I bought it for a client but wish I could buy one for myself.

Cons: Auto doc feeder cannot always handle large volumes - it choked on a 34 page document, but then handled it fine after fanning the pages.

Other Thoughts: perfect for anyone who is trying to keep documents in the computer rather than filing them, especially is a home office setting.

Rating + 4 Great features but no TWAIN support

Pros: Bundled software offers a lot of choices. Scanning documents into MS Office apps is a bonus. Small, lightweight, fast. Easy to set up, easy to use.

Cons: No TWAIN support. That's the only reason I'm returning it.

Other Thoughts: I did the research and read a lot of reviews. This was a very well liked product. It never even dawned on me that there might not be TWIND support - I stupidly assumed that all scanners had TWAIN.

Rating + 5 Good, fast scanner

Pros: Quickly scans both sides of paper and converts to pdf. All scanning options are shown after it scans the item, so you only have to insert the pages and press the button to start. Rotates pages so they all are upright after scanning.

Cons: Periodically grabs too many pages. Not that big a deal though, because it scans 15-20 sheets a minute.

Other Thoughts: About every two weeks I scan 150 to 200 pages that I send back to students. This scanner normally seperates the pages very well, even the pages that were trifolded and sent to me through the mail. My prior scanner could not handle these at all.

Rating + 5 Prime place on my desktop

Pros: I didn't even know an item like this existed until I began asking friends. I love this thing. It's allowed me to get a lot of junk of the desktop and out of file cabinets.

Cons: Too many times seeing paper not pulled through individually. I've had to stand and drop each sheet in (especially when scanning old stacks that have gotten sort of tight) many times. I've found loosening up sheets by bending, fanning, and shaking them helps to better separate for feeding.

Other Thoughts: I need another one for the house. :)

Rating + 5 Great document scanner

Pros: Great for what it does...scanning paper to a .pdf. Very fast, Very small footprint. File size is smaller than cheap scanners which was nice. 4 page letter, "Normal" resolution setting (lowest quality), 127KB and it's very good...I archieve all docs at this setting...did I say quick?

Cons: If you take out a 2+ page letter folded in thirds fresh out of envelope and scan it, it probably will grab both at the same time (mis-feed). I have set the Scansnap to ask me after the scanner feeds in all the paper if I want to scan more to the same doc, this way I easily have the option to feed one page at a time to the same doc which is what I do in that situation and when I want different sized pages scanned to the same doc.

Other Thoughts: Would have like to see it at three hundred bucks since there is no Twain driver and it's dumbed down options, but it's actually been designed to do one thing really well and I bought it for that purpose, so I have no compliants...I got everything I was looking for expected, so I am happy.

If you unplug the USB cable, make sure to plug it back in to the same USB port otherwise, it won't work...at least that was my experience.

Definite buy if you are looking for a pretty fast sheet-fed doc scanner.

Rating + 5 Great scanner, some limitations.

Pros: Scans stacks of documents in full duplex (front and back at the same time). Scans quickly and effortlessly. Scansnap software is great for keeping things organized. Very small form factor, looks great on my desk.

Cons: Even though the description says "50 sheet auto document feeder". I've found that any more than 20 sheets will cause the scanner to pull multiple sheets and occasionally jam.

Other Thoughts: If you scan 20 at a time it is very easy to combine those files into one larger one using the included adobe acrobat software.

Rating + 1 Not worth price

Pros: A speedy duplex scanner with simple operation can make archiving paper easy.

Cons: Found software flaky on Vista operating system. Unit often hung and lost sync with computer having to be restarted. Managed to get this at least workable (never found it reliable). Real problem was with scanning. Scanning more than a few pages failed. Whether due to misfeeds or software I wasn't sure. Also found that under some circumstances, unit would multiple feed paper. I might have been able to make it workable, but too much effort for what should have been a "point and shoot" solution.

Rating + 4 Small, fast & accurate, but no 64-bit support

Pros: Stunningly fast double-sized scanning, very easy to use, includes full version of Acrobat 8 Standard, included semi-automatic OCR is very accurate. Auto-sizing and auto-color works very well and generates small file sizes. Folds into a very compact size (small fraction of a flatbed scanner). Scanned thousands of documents with very few paper-feed errors, and I still use this several times a week.

Cons: WinXP and Vista32 only. *No* 64-bit driver support, and Fujitsu has a poor record with driver updates. No TWAIN support, and very poor with photos (but these were both expected). Occasionally double-feeds, and awkward when scanning a variety of paper sizes in a single .pdf bundle. Software UI is a little clunky, but gets the job done.

Other Thoughts: This scanner does one thing: convert paper documents to .pdf format. It doesn't work (or even try) as a photo scanner or anything else.
I would give this 5 stars if it had a 64-bit driver. I had to buy and install VMware Workstation 6 (which works *great*) to run this and my older Epson flatbed scanner on a Vista64 host.

Pros: Stupidly easy to use. Feeds well, bundled software is actually helpful.

Basically, this scanner rocks. It's not trying to be an all purpose scanner. If you're looking for a photo, document, book, all purpose scanner you'll be disappointed. If, on the other hand, you're looking for an exceptionally competent document scanner to use to get rid of all those receipts and other documents around the house, then this is the best thing since sliced bread.

Cons: None that I've found.

Rating + 2 Feeder problems - skips pages on just about every scan

Pros: Small footprint. Installed easily. Scans in duplex.

Cons: Sheet feeder does not function very well. You need clean, crisp never-folded paper. Even then, you never know. For example, directly from the printer, I put in a 19 page Income Tax return. I scanned 3 times - each time it skipped a page, double feeding paper one or more times out of the set. Finally on the 4th try, it got it right.
The promise of the paperless office is still a while a way. The idea that you can sit down in front of your file cabinet and start archiving documents is a dream. Paper that has been tri-folded in an envelope - a problem. Paper that has been in a file folder for a while equally sketchy. Anything slick - like a magazine clipping. Paper punched for 3-ring binder....etc.
I have used a lot of document feeders connected to copy machines and they handle pretty much whatever you throw at them. With the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510, you have to baby sit the machine through every page.

Other Thoughts: If you really need a document scanner, spend more money and get a good one. If you just do a few sheets now and then, just use a flat bed.

Rating + 5 Wow! Love this product

Pros: This is an amazing scanner! I love the DUPLEX color scanning in under 6 seconds per page. It starts the first page within 2-4 seconds of hitting the green scan button on the scanner. I love the built-in automatic dust cover (when you shut the cover to turn off the scanner, a dust cover covers the paper chute). The color is good. The quality is great, even on "normal" quality. Normal quality is better on photos and text than both of my other sheetfed scanners from Brother. Very few jams. Comes with a clear carrier to hold damaged or odd-shape paper. Can scan thick paper (120 pound and more).

Cons: The program they provide has crashed twice, although I've scanned thousands of images. The scanner has jammed about a dozen times, mostly on damaged paper or when I try to feed way too much paper to it. Just like all other scanners and printers, it doesn't do too well with static-charged paper.

Other Thoughts: I have a small home office, running a small company. I have been trying to go paperless for years - I was finally able to do it with this printer. I have spent about a grand on other cheaper scanners and printer/scanner combos. Nothing else comes close to this.

This also does extremely well scanning receipts - even the LONG Home Depot receipts. Can even scan the thin gas pump receipt paper, stacked or single. It has scanned EVERYTHING, except books of course.

I recommend this for small offices and home offices. Even larger offices, if you get a few of these. It should be good for up to 20,000 pages or so per month, maybe more. I've scanned about 3000 pages in a day or so(not full-time, while still working on other stuff). Excellent scanner!!!!

Rating + 4 Pretty good with one caveat

Pros: Well made. Compact size. Fast (at lower quality modes). Duplex scanning! Automatic Color versus B&W detection. Automatic paper size detection. Includes Acrobat Standard.

Cons: No grayscale mode; your are limited to color and b&w modes.

Other Thoughts: ADF can jam, but seems to work fine once it gets past the first page. For odd sizes and newsprint must use paper carrier (only one supplied). Suggest considering more advanced scanner from same vendor for business use, particularly if you want need grayscale.

Rating + 5 Perfect little scanner for 1-10 users

Pros: See the review from December '07 for more detail. I've used document scanners of all types since 1993. For a home office or small office, this cannot be beat. Very easy to use, fast, 1 sided or 2, color or B/W, choices of file output type and location. The list goes on. You can even scan spreadsheets into tables and any text into Word docs. Choose the full text Optical Character Recognition and you can retrieve any document by any word or words contained in it. Amazing little package of hardware and software. Scan to PDF is the best feature of all.

Cons: Follow installation instructions to the letter and you'll be fine. Don't try to scan flimsy, torn or damaged documents without using the envelope included and you'll be fine. If you treat it like a toaster and think it will scan bread or funky shaped items, you're in trouble! :-)

Other Thoughts: I'd love to see the price come down over time, but you already get more than you pay for at $400-$500. Not too long ago similar performance was 10 times the price.
If you work from home or have a small business, you can justify this purchase in convenience alone in a matter of weeks or months. This product really delivers!

Rating + 2 problem with rebate

Pros: Fujitsu has misleading rebate instructions and the required label for the rebate form is lightly adhered to the exterior of the box and is lost or damaged during shipping. Fujutsu's rebate form ask for "ORIGIANL UPC/Bar Code and serial number from qualified box. I cut of the two bar codes from the thick cardboard box. I did not have a bar code with the serial number, so I wrote it on one of the two bar codes. Fujitsu's rejected my rebate claim and sent my a postcard saying they needed "an original serial number label". Why didn't they say "origianal serial number label" on the original rebate instructions? I had ordered a second scanner because I loved the scanner so much and the second box has a flimsy adhesive label with the serial number. The first scanner box did not have this. It could have fallen off during shipping since NewEgg ships in the original box. I love the scanner but with the rebate denial and long wait for technical assistance, I would not recommend buying this.

Cons: difficulty with rebate
long telephone wait for techinical assistance (over 1 hour), software does not work immediately as installed, I know because I installed scanners on 2 separate computers

Other Thoughts: make sure you receive a label on the outside of the box that says "serial number label" and make sure label isn't damaged.

Pros: Accurate bargain price desktop duplex scanner designed to do one thing- create PDF files from individually scanned documents. It does that very well. Allows creation of custom scanning profiles but the presets have worked for me. The small footprint allows me to place it next to my monitor. Allows scanning to any directory. If scanned to ScanSnap Organizer directory software can be set to automatically OCR PDF files on the hard drive after scanning- increases scan speed.

Cons: No twain drivers. If you need a scanner that interacts with other programs, pay more and get a twain scanner. Do not permanently store your PDF files in the ScanSnap Organizer directory. This software created director simply disappeared one day and I lost access to all the PDF files in it. Restoring the PDF files from the hard drive which were scanned after my last backup was a pain.

Other Thoughts: Cleaning the feed rollers with 90% or more Isopropyl alcohol always eliminates my paper feed problems. However, this has to be done often enough (say bi-weekly) to establish that this is definitely a "personal" scanner.

Rating + 5 Great Workgroup scanner

Pros: When doing batch scanning, the most important function is the paper handling. No mater how great the images are, if there is a paper jam every 5 pages the frustration is overwhelming. I bought this scanner because of Fujitsu's reputation with paper handling and I am not disappointed. I scan about 200 pages a day and usually only get a paper jam once a week. I highly recommend this scanner.

Cons: A different model is needed for Mac. Will not work with Linux, only Windows.

Other Thoughts: Application software for filing the documents as PDF works great for small offices. Can set software controls for each page or each batch is a single document or can set that batches are concatenated to a single document until the operator clicks on the completed document button. This is great is a document is made up of different size pages.

Rating + 5 Outstanding Machine (and Mac compatible - sort of)

Pros: This is an excellent scanner with good software for Windows. It works a lot like a fax machine -- drop the document in the tray and hit a button, and the pages will feed through one by one. You can set it up so that it asks you for a file name and then drops the new PDF directly into the included ScanSnap Organizer program. The organizer program is good, if limited. A fairly no-frills app that lets you put PDFs into folders, rename, email, and even run OCR.

The OCR is an interesting feature. When you scan a paper document, it is of course turned into a graphic, which the computer cannot "read" as words. When you run the OCR, the PDF will then have invisible text overlaid over the original scan image, which means that when you search the PDF for text, you will see the word highlighted on the original image. A very neat feature of PDFs that I didn't even know existed until I used this product.

The full version of Adobe Acrobat Standard is included.

Cons: The Scan button is kind of mushy. Sometime you really have to press hard.

It's pricey for the home user.

Other Thoughts: You can get this to work on a Mac, though it takes a bit of fiddling. Search the Internet a bit, but basically you go to the Japanese site and download that Mac Driver, which will run this device. ( I believe the only reason there are two versions are because of software licensing issues -- they are the _exact_ same hardware except for color and USB ID code.

Then there is a relatively easy "hack" to make the Japanese app show English language. (Of course you don't also get the Mac version of Adobe this way....) To my knowledge, the Mac ScanSnap will NOT work on Windows -- this is a one-way hack.

Rating + 5 Scanning Rockstar!

Pros: Excellent speed, good media handling, bundled software isn't junk (as it happens quite often), minimal foorprint

Cons: ... a bit pricey but tell me if there's anything else comparable to it?

Other Thoughts: I'm a tech consultant and was looking for desk scanner for one of my customers who starter going paperless as much as possible. They have a large MFC in a hallway but still want to be able to scan stuff right at the desk most of the time. I found this unit on Newegg and we decided to give it a try.
And I'm ... very impressed. Unit is very small but does the job perfect. I even took it to a bit of an extreme test by scanning stack of business cards which it handled pretty good (although it jammed a couple times but I do not expect it to swallow heavy and glossy cards between regular paper ones).
Bundled software is very good and does justify the cost of the scanner (How much was that Adobe Acrobat Std by itself?!)
Overall, I'm pleased and pretty sure I'll my customer will like it too.

Rating + 5 Fantastic

Pros: Very good quality, amazingly fast comapred to a multifunction printer with ADF, automatic color/b&w detection, paper size detection, etc. Duplex as fast as simplex. Small footprint.

Cons: Can't really automatically feed a stack of receipts, but not sure there's anything that can.

Other Thoughts: Best quality for me: this can handle heavy watermark paper that's been folded to go in the mail. Most scanners will hang up on the crease marks and grab several pages at once. One touch pdf is great too. The scanner's across the room and I can walk over and scan five or six documents multi-page documents in sequence and then go back to my desk and they're already separate files. Doesn't require any interaction on the computer to scan. I got this to scan signed original legal documents for records and wanted something I don't have to be scared of tearing up pages. I had a Lexm@rk multi-function that did that once. Not fun.

Rating + 3 Mixed Bag

Pros: Fast, takes all sorts of paper, simple, has Acrobat 8.

Cons: ScanSnap Manager is irritating, frequently jams/stops after 4 months, losing connectivity after about 4 minutes.

Other Thoughts: This is a tough one. When it works, it is a dream. For about the first 3 months I had it, I could send piles of up to about 32 pieces of paper, everything from grocery receipts to Walmart print-outs, and it generally worked fine. You must be aware that when using different size papers, longest must be first. If you don't scan anything for about 5 minutes; you get the "offline" icon, and you have to push the power button on/off. If it jams, and you try to restart, you get an "undefined error" in scansnap, and you have to restart the application. Easy to do, but irritating. I can see the awesome potential of this scanner, but for me, it has been a let down.

Rating + 5 Excellent tool for a paper-lesser world

Pros: -fast
-direct-to-pdf at the touch of a button
-automatically rotates and removes blank pages
-does exactly what it's supposed to do

I scoured the reviews looking for problems as I considered going paperless. Paperless, it turns out, is more difficult than you would expect but not because of any shortcomings of this fantastic device. I work in a medical-academic setting with a lot of paper-only versions of documents floating around. I can literally pop my document into the scanner press the button and it works its magic. If you're looking to decrease your paper-burden, this is YOUR product-I've been thrilled.

Cons: -would love if it had similar high resolution image scanning but that wasn't its promise
-To be able to afford one at work and home

Rating + 5 Excellent home/small office scanning solution.

Pros: If you're looking to scan a medium to high quantity of documents, for personal or home/small business use, this machine will do exactly what you need it to do. It comes with Adobe Acrobat Standard Edition (about $250 retail). I opted to have the included scanning software do the OCR on the scanned files, which yields searchable PDF files. If you set the scanning quality to something better than "fastest", if will still scan faster than you would expect, the file is a higher quality PDF, and the OCR recognizes more. I have it hooked up to the USB port of an Intel dual core E2160 processor at 2.6 Ghz, and it can complete the scanning AND OCR on 20 pages in about 140 seconds. If you turn the OCR off, the files are saved as fast as the machine can scan them through. The machine has a tiny footprint on my desk, and it really is as easy as pushing a button. At this point, if this thing died, I would just go buy another.

Cons: On rare occasion, if the scanned documents have been folded, or are torn/tattered, as one would expect, the unit may misfeed, or feed two pages at once. Misfeeds are easy to resolve in both the hardware and software. Based on the machine performance, this issue is barely worth mentioning.

Other Thoughts: I have not attempted scanning to anything other than PDF, and have no intention of doing so, although it appears you can also save to jpeg. I am not aware of any twain drivers for this device, so you'll probably have to use the included software. I had purchased one HP top feeding tray scanner, and then tried a Brother top feeding tray scanner, both of them were terrible, but the cost was less than half of the ScanSnap. I finally bit the bullet and just bought the ScanSnap, and haven't regretted it for one moment. So far I've scanned about 5000 documents and the machine just begs for more. I'm a technology freak, but you don't need to be one to operate this machine and it's software, and it's one of the few devices that I have purchased over the last 5 years that works EXACTLY THE WAY IT SHOULD. Thank you Fujitsu engineering.

Rating + 5 A GREAT product!

Pros: I bought this to replace a flatbed scanner for capturing electronic images of all that paper in your life. It works better than you can imagine. Insert paper (lots of it) and push one button. Out comes a PDF file in a few seconds. It takes on just about anything. The scanning software is very flexible, and works great and it comes with a full copy of Acrobat 8, as well. If you need to scan lots of paper documents, GET THIS SCANNER! I strongly recommend it.

Cons: None, unless you are looking for a TWAIN interface. It doesn't have it and says so right up front, so look elsewhere if you need TWAIN.

Other Thoughts: Sometimes, engineers and programmers get it all right. This product is it. It does what it claims and does it extremely well. If you need to scan any size paper up to 8.5" wide (almost any length), this is the machine for you.

Pros: This is one of my all-time favorite gadgets. It scans two sides of a document, in color, in no time at all. Our legal assistant brags about it.

Cons: Occasionally shuts off and won't restart automatically when we put something in the scanner.

Rating + 5 This scanner is awesome!

Pros: Setup was a breeze. Make sure you install the included software BEFORE connecting the scanner hardware. There is a label taped over the USB port to help you with this. The speed of the scanner is amazing. Like a high-dollar laser printer, this scanner churns through sheets one after another. The paper feed handles about 20-25 pages at a time. More than that and it won't be able to pull the first sheet, and you'll have to start the scan over. To scan a huge stack of paper, just watch for the number of remaining sheets to get down to 2-3, then stack another 20, or so pages in the feeder. This will allow you to create a single PDF, without stopping. The software is a breeze to understand. I use the "scan to folder" option, rather than the "scan to organizer" option, so that I can control file names and file locations. I haven't used any of the MS Office converters (word, excel, power point), but assume they work as well as the rest of the package.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The small size and weight of this scanner means you can put it almost anywhere!

Rating + 5 Refreshingly fast and easy

Pros: Fast
Easy setup and operation
Good software
Small footprint
Looks great

Cons: Output tray should be a little bigger so pages don't fall off

Other Thoughts: I am so happy I ditched my clunky, bug-ridden HP scanner and got this one. So easy to setup and operate! Scanning is no longer a chore, it's a snap!

Rating + 5 Best tech gadget ever. Period.

Pros: I've owned many, many (hundreds?) of tech devices and gadgets over the years. Many are good, some are great, some are bad. Even the great ones occasionally fail to perform, have little errors and problems that need to be solved, etc. This device does exactly what it is supposed to do, with rock solid reliability, and perfect execution, and does it very rapidly, with gorgeous results. I just couldn't be happier.

Cons: It is not TWAIN compatible, which slightly llimits its ability to interact with some software (not totally, as you can just create PDFs with the proprietary software, and then do whatever you want to the PDFs with the other software). But it's missing that very cool link that TWAIN provides.

Other Thoughts: I was shocked to see anything but 5 star ratings on this. So, I read all of the 4 star and below ratings. One guy complained that his driver CD was bad and he couldn't get a replacement rapidly. I thought he was probably wrong about the drivers being unavailable from the Fujitsu website; but he's right, they're not there. In my opinion, that doesn't warrant a one star rating, though.

The other non 5 star raters complained that the machine jams/feeds multiple sheets. That's happened to me several times, and it's frustrating, but it's not a malfunction, it's a cleaning/maintenance issue. When that happens, you simply clean the rollers, etc. with the Fujitsu solution (I bought it, and I think it's just expensive rubbing alcohol, but it works). When you clean it properly, the problem stops, and it will go back to flawless operation. Here's a link to the cleaning instructions: http://www.fujitsu.com/downloads/COMP/fel/scansnap/cleaning_instructions_for_scansnap_s510.pdf

Pros: Excellent scanner. I have my non computer savvy users running this scanner and they get it right every time! I am actually buying a second one today.

Cons: Expensive. But you get what you pay for!! :-)

Rating + 1 Terrible Service

Pros: None

Cons: Love to evaluate the scanner itself, but the CD containing the proprietary software is bad, tech support is not open on weekends (closed for "administrative reasons"), and there is no download link to the required software - just a call-up tech support number (which as I wrote is closed).

Other Thoughts: I install software and drivers from 1000s of CDs a year, and 99.9% of the time the CD is fine. In those few instances when the CD is bad (last one was an HP driver) I have been able to download the software from the manufacturer's site. This is 2008 after all - unreal that a major manufacturer like Fujitsu can't even manage an FTP site. No more Fujitsu stuff!

Rating + 5 Best document scanner ever!!!

Pros: Ridiculously easy to use
Intuitive user interface
Fast!!
Small footprint
Adobe Acrobat software included
Great quality scans

Cons: None that I can think of

Other Thoughts: I can't believe I worked for so long without this scanner. I fumbled with various others, most recently an HP Scanjet 5590, and since I've had this scanner I am soooooo relieved! It is so intuitive and easy to use, I have never even had to look at the instructions or user manual. And it is FAST!! Image quality is great. And it includes the latest Adobe Acrobat software. Small footprint, and looks great...I even got bonus points with the wife, for replacing my old clunky HP with this one. If you need a basic document scanner, for heaven's sake, buy this scanner! I use mine in a home office every day (I am a CPA), and I could not be happier with it.

Rating + 5 Excellent scanner, x64 is possible

Pros: Fast. Works great after a ton of scanning. No issues. Easy. Client software is excellent.

Cons: NO TWAIN Driver whatsoever, although some Linux users have found ways to make it work...not exactly "out of the box". Linux support isn't something from Fujitsu, although it's worth mentioning.

Other Thoughts: FOR X64 Windows users: There IS a way to get this working on X64. Open an online chat session with Fujitsu Computing Products of America and ask/beg/grovel nicely for Scansnap 4.2 for the S300 (explain x64), and say you don't care if it's unsupported. They'll give you an FTP download link to the 700MB file. This installs and works with the S510 with no issues whatsoever!

Pros: I'm really pleased with this scanner. It scans quickly and I can't imagine how it could be easier to use. Takes up very little room on my desk.

Cons: Infrequently, the unit refuses to feed if a piece of paper has so much as a small wrinkle in it. This problem has been so minor, though, that it is almost not worth mentioning.

Other Thoughts: Scanner use is personal, not business, and has revolutionized the efficiency of my recordkeeping. Very little paper to keep track of any longer.

Rating + 5 Excellent scanner

Pros: This scanner is very fast. I had seen it at a local hospital and made note of the model...talk about easing one's pain!

The Rack2-Filer software is something we are evaluating (came with scanner as 30 day trial) which we have found to be quite good as well.

The price is very reasonable and we are looking at having one on most desktops instead of larger departmental scanners.

Cons: None significant.

Other Thoughts: This scanner is finally getting our document management project off the ground.

Rating + 5 Fantastic device, worth every dollar

Pros: Super fast, Super easy, super stable

Cons: Maybe the fact that it cannot scan thicker paper, like thin cardboard used on software boxes; the ones you need to scan the top cover for UPC rebate.

Other Thoughts: Buy it!

Rating + 5 ScanSnap S510

Pros: Our office has worked for about 3 years "going paperless". We decided to try individual scanners as opposed to our current "central scanner" We purchased one try. We immidiately saw the benefit and purchased 8 more. Everyone loves these scanners, they are easy to setup and install (Windows XP), easy to learn how to use and have worked flawlessly. Scan front and back, color & black and white, and multiple size papers at the same time. This is revolutionalizing our office.

Cons: Lack of TWAIN support

Other Thoughts: Love this scanner

Pros: Quick and easy to operate, excellent features, speed, excellent straightening, excellent documentation, it just works

Cons: none yet

Other Thoughts: After pulling my hair out w/ the hp Scanjet 5590, I've switched to this scanner. Although I've only used it one day, I still have to say this is the one -- so far I love it!

Pros: This is a great scanner for business documents direct to PDF. Have personally scaned 50,000 pages with other versions of this scanner.... it works... installed the recommended maintenance items and still going strong after 80,000 pages

Cons: NO TWAIN DIRVER !! this is not that type of scanner.... you need to purchase something else for that work..... do your research....!!! an RMA is not for stupidity or failure to research of products or their limitations or designed purpose.

Other Thoughts: The new versions of software work with Win Vista, there is a learning curve to trans to vista, stuff is not the same as XP was,....the last version have at work saves my bacon every day... finally software works for the user....instead of the user working the software... READ the documentaion... Did some one say change... well form your own opinion ...

Rating + 5 Small and Fast

Pros: Very, very compact yet zips right along with very high quality. Does exactly what it says it will do. More integrated software than OmniPage/Paperport but perhaps not as fully capable. One touch processing great. One of the few products I have bought that can say I'm very satisfied with. Would definitely recommend Fujitsu products --- have tried many others.

Cons: It would be nice to have TWAIN.

Other Thoughts: Newegg delivered in ONE day rather than the expected 2 or 3 which, if you can believe it, actually turned out to be an inconvenience! (But don't delay my stuff in the future because I said that!)

Rating + 5 Scansnap scanner S510

Pros: Fast. Easy to use. Small foot print. Fujitsu after a 40 minute wait on hold gave me a FTP link where I down loaded new software that worked with XP service pack 2. If it last like the Fujitsu laptop I had the technology will change way before it wares out.

Cons: Had trouble with the software. Even though info said it worked with XP service pack 2, it would not work on 3 different machines. It would work on a fourth machine with service pack 1. Of course the other software would not.

Other Thoughts: I have 4 other scanners one of which is a HP Doc scanner and the S510 is much faster and easier to use than the HP. The software with the S510 is far far better that that received with the HP.

Pros: Great doc scanner! Bought it to organize my home paperwork and go electronic. Comes with a great software package that interfaces nicely. Adobe Acrobat 8 sandard is worth the cost alone. Works great with different size papers in the same batch and autosizes larger sheets than it is not designed to handle. Set it to the 2nd fastet scan setting and is still very fast and creates accurate and clear documents. It took longer to gather a years worth of paperwork than to scan and file it.

Cons: Can be a little tempermental with pages that stick together, but what isn't? Jams easily in those situations, but unjamms quickly with the press of a button an lifting the front panel.

Other Thoughts: I would definetly buy again. Newegg was excellent as usual. Ordered it on a Sunday night, it was shipped out on Monday morning and delivered by Wednesday.
