Not so great
Pros: It works when it NEEDS to work, prevent power failure and allows shut-down time. Aka it does as it was intended to do without fault in that area.
Cons: The slightest flicker in the lights causes this thing to click over to backup power instantly, buzzing and clicking noisy, and sometimes it even sets itself off. It also causes the lights in my apartment to flicker, creating its own power surges, flickering my lights. APC needs to do some more R&D In the way these things work.
Other Thoughts: I had to unplug and move 2 lights in my apartment to different outlets, one of them to this unit itself, because anytime the lights would flicker, this backup unit would constantly, non-stop turn on and off, click, click, click, until i shut my lights off manually. Im sure the Wiring in my place sucks, I get constant surges in Florida, but this backup unit should seamlessly jump to backup power, not CAUSE a fluctuation in my power, creating its own brown-outs and false switchovers. ugh.

Pros: The box has lots of pretty colors!
Cons: The unit I recieved was DOA and cost me 2 hours of lost time, but that's not neweggs fault. This is the first DOA item I recieved from newegg after over 3-4 years of doing business with newegg.
Other Thoughts: APC has great RMA support; they sent me a replacement unit as well as the shipping label to return the defective unit. I received the new unit within a week, and I didnt have to pay out of my own pocket to send the defective unit back. Which was nice.

Pros: This UPS supports my router, network switch, and old AMD K6-based intranet server. Without a monitor, the load is only 3% with about 40 minutes of battery power on tap. It works quite nicely with Linux using apcupsd.
Cons: None so far

Occasional false alarms...
Pros: See previous post.
Cons: In 3 weeks I've had 5 false alarms from Windows Power Management with this unit...I may try the APC-provided software to see if that fixes the false-alarm problem.

Works good enough...
Pros: Naturally I've tried pulling the plug a few times and it picks up the load without a glitch. But we have clean power here so I can't speak to its ability to detect and respond to less than blackout events.
Cons: APC's PowerChute power management software seems inferior to Windows XP builtin power management.
Other Thoughts: With an AMD64 Athlon dual-core, 4 disk drives (RAID5)+external HD, 19" CRT monitor, using onboard video, this lasts only 2 to 3 minutes before running out. So I should have got a bigger unit. It does seem possible to buy a larger sealed-gel battery and connect it externally for much cheaper than buying a bigger unit, eventually I'll try that.

Adequate Hardware, Marginal Software
Pros: Power Management supported by Windows, MacOS X, and Linux.
Useful plug arrangement.
Cons: Warranty requires filling out invasive marketing questionnaires prior to making any claims.
Batteries difficult and expensive to replace, and cost roughly as much as a new unit.
Other Thoughts: Built in support via Windows, Mac, or Linux is much better than what APC provides.
I've had two of these units, or their APC equivalents, besides the one I just purchased. Batteries need replacement after 12-18 months.

Pros: ~25 minutes of power with a standard tower (no monitor). does what it's supposed to do.
Cons: bundled software leaves a little to be desired. the old versions of powerchute would log to the eventlog, which is sane -- this (the personal edition) does not.

APC & New Egg both are the best.
Pros: Excellent warranty and works like it should. I have been using APC for over 12 years and only had one failure and they stood behind it and gave me a new APC unit and paid for the reapirs to my computer.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Can you afford not to have an APC UPS? I have used other USP'es and they have failed beyond the batteries dying. Their warranties fall short as well.

Works with Windows AND Linux
Pros: 2nd one of these I've bought. Easy to setup. Does exactly what it's supposed to. Battery life meets or exceeds what's advertised.
Cons: Connector cable was a little hard to get to as space in the battery compartment is just a little tight. I don't have big hande either.
Other Thoughts: Out of the box, both Windows XP and SuSE Linux 10 detect and communicate with this UPS over the USB connection.

Good to go
Pros: Fairly large and solid unit. It'll keep a computer up 20-30 minutes, or keep several up during a power 'hit'.
Cons: None.

A must have!
Pros: An excellent purchase that anyone building a computer worth more then $500 should have. APC is a proven company that produces great products. The warrany provided is unbeatable... up to $150,000 in coverage; basically any home computer would be covered.
Cons: The only con would be not owning one. Take if from experience. My grandfather owns a business and of course a business computer, w/ a store security system as well. Between the security system and computer, approx. $3,000 in electronics. Lighting struck, no APC unit, and $3,000 worth of fried electronics. He now has one of these units, and I will always own one.
Other Thoughts: This must be the smartest purchase that I have ever made for my computer. I can't believe I never bought one before.

perfect for the home or home office
Pros: i have had the BE500U (same thing as BE500R) for 3 years now and it has gotton me through power outage after outage.
Cons: other than there is no self test....NOTHING!
Other Thoughts: PowerChute has a 3 year timer that comes up and tells you "that it's time to repace your battery". APC has fair prices on repacement batteries, but will also do a trade in with your old on(s) for a dicount on a new one...sorry newegg...they come out cheeper with the trade-in discont, but your really close. for a good UPS for a good price this is the one...GO Newegg!!

Pros: Saved me from a power outage and a couple brown outs so far.
Cons: I have bad electricity in my place, lots of interference which causes a waving effect on my crt monitor. Had hoped this would clear it up, even slightly, yet it has done nothing
Other Thoughts: $xx but doesn't seem like it's filtering anything

Just to inform
Pros: APC of course, has nice warranty and hardware backup plan.
Cons: Doesnt work nearly as well as it should.
Other Thoughts: I had a voltage problem here last year (main trunk line outside was snapping and caused the voltage to jump wildly from 120-140v) and my APC would consistantly kick on standby, rather than shutdown due to the high voltage. My other cheaper ups devices in the house would refuse to run and shut themselves down to stop any damage, but this APC damaged my motherboard from the constant standby/online switching. I unfortunately hadnt registered so I had no warranty.

APC - 'nuff said
Pros: The thing just works. Not like you need a bunch of features on a PC UPS. I haven't had a lengthy power outage to test through, but hi/low power events are handles without a thought. Basic Powerchute software is all you get, but really all you need on at this price point.
Cons: Would be nice if the Powerchute software allowed a selftext.

A must have!
Pros: Easy setup and easy to use. All you need to do is plug in into a USB port and install the software. That's it!
Cons: Maye have limited battery life with high power hungry machines.
