Rating + 4

Pros: The price, I bought mine at geeks.com for less than 180.00 (but since I shop at newegg a lot I figured I'd review it). About six months ago when I bought this thing there were no other MP3 players in that price range (some creatives are now, but thats with the hassle of a mail in rebate this had no rebate). I also really like the plus pad as opposed to the ipod's click wheel, and the stock earbuds have gold connectors. Plus it comes with a remote and cradle.

Cons: The stock firmware completely SUCKS. Toshiba wants to make you use Windows Media Player and their gigabeat room software. Dragging and dropping is near impossible, and if you use the gigagbeat room your MP3's are encrypted so that you can't put them on other computers. Didn't come with a pouch like the ipods, but thats not big.

Other Thoughts: www.rockbox.org recently came out with a new firmware for the gigabeat that is really easy to install. This new firmware makes it wonderful, and gives it linux support. It is the reason it gets a 4.

Pros: It shipped within 3 days, quality is ok.

Cons: It fell apart after a year.

Rating + 1 Terrible

Pros: Light - but this makes no difference considering the thing does not work!

Cons: Did not work. All of these are shipped with old firmware - v2.01, and cannot be upgraded. You have to call Toshiba, who ships a CD. Once installed, it is still a piece of rubbish.

Other Thoughts: This unit is discounted as Toshiba has stopped producing them. They are the company behind the MS Zune - which is also a piece of rubbish (63% of reviews are negative)

Rating + 3 Its alright

Pros: Good easy to use interface. Score a five

Cons: Difficult to add play list by Gigabeat but easier through Windows Media. Would not work on my primary home system but would work on my laptop. Therefore, this is one reason it scored a three

Other Thoughts: Averaged score to a 4. Its good buy, do not get me worng, just can be a pain initially. Customer support could be improved. Menaing, I asked for a firmware and software update and they only do it by mail and to date it has exceeded the 5-7 days to arrive. Score for CS a 2

Rating + 2 Not a very ling lived product.

Pros: Nice display. Easy to navigate. A lot of pre-set equalizer options. You can compress your music files down to a smaller size through Windows…it saves on gig space…like you would need more gigs.

Cons: You have to transfer all the files through Windows Media Player to be able to get the music you want into the MP3 player. Setting up playlists are a little hard to get used to and annoying at times.

Other Thoughts: It broke within 6 months of me owning it. The touch pad never worked right for me...it would always stick and it was very annoying!

Rating + 5 Good Investment

Pros: The battery life is extremely long, price, the screen shows the album art, the tuner that comes with the headphones, hard drive is too huge to fill, just about everything

Cons: The headphones that come with the product are awkward but that definitely isn't a big deal.

Other Thoughts: I was in the city for an entire day and the battery was still on the highest notch when I got home, from 1pm-10pm

Rating + 1 TERRIBLE BUY

Pros: It was cheaper than the rest

Cons: The touchscreen randomizes user input. The gigabeat encripts your mp3s into a format unusable by everything else so that you can't share music. Who wants an MP3 player that can't play MP3's???

Rating + 4 nicely Done

Pros: got this for my son's birthday....he lvoes it !! Very nice pictures. Very nice playback. Great capacity for the money.
Updated firmware and Software much improve the experience. Very glad didn't waste money on ipud.

Cons: Would be nice if Toshiba didn't encrypt music being loaded onto the player, but I understand DRM and all. Initial software was not so good, new version mucho better.

Other Thoughts: Very happy with purchase. Son is very happy.

Rating + 4 Upgrade the firmware, THEN review it!

Pros: Best 40GB MP3 player you can buy at this price. Excellent screen, excellent size, and with the firmware upgrade, excellent sound quality. The dock features a switch which allows it to operate as a standard USB dock or to set it as a charge/play dock with a standard line out mini jack. When switched to the line out mode, the EQ is disabled for a "flat" output, so that you may use the EQ in your receiver.

Cons: The Plus Touch controller is not nearly as easy to use as iPod's click wheel. Sliding along the Plus is rarely used. It is essentially a grouping of 5 touch sensitive pads in a cross layout. The only other complaint I have with the Gigabeat is that there is no "song" listing. You can list tracks by artist, album, genre or playlist, but there is no option to simply view all tracks on the unit at once. This, combined with the lack of an iPod clickwheel which can be scrolled continuously, can make navigating to a specific track a tedious process.

Other Thoughts: Firstly, UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE! Many complaints regarding sound and EQ quality will be resolved after upgrading the firmware to 3.000US. Search mygigabeat.com to find the firmware. While I love the iPod clickwheel and menu layout, I absolutely DESPISE iTunes and the digital rights management hoops you have to jump through to use an iPod. It is infuriating and well outweighs the advantage of the iPod's clickwheel. I am much happier with the Gigabeat, despite the lack of a clickwheel. Some have commented that tracks are encrypted once put on the Gigabeat, but that is only the case when using the supplied Gigabeat Room software. You can transfer the tracks directly to the Gigabeat as a removeable storage device without encryption and it will play them. Overall I am pleased with my purchase. If the Gigabeat had a better menu layout and a better controller lick iPod's clickwheel, it would be the perfect player. I am eager to try one of the new Gigabeat V series with it's joystick controller.

Rating + 5

Pros: Very nice display, most navigational buttons easy to use.
Excellent sound if you get a quality headset.(I use Shure EC2's = awesome)
I also use the dock's line-out plugged into a set of quality Sony PC speakerers= instant home entertainment center.

Cons: Lack of availability of replacement parts, like a second dock.
Not many accessories availible.

Other Thoughts: Original software was not good.
Free upgrade to version 3.0 much improved. USB 2.0 is now supported using gigabeat room as well as any plays-for-sure compatable software.
As for durability, I have the Toshiba leather case. I've dropped many times, traveled all over the country with it, and have had absolutley ZERO problems with it.
I would definately buy again !!!

Rating + 2 DO NOT BUY

Pros: Good grafix. Looks good, from a distance.

Cons: Dents easily. Encrypts songs. Terriable interface. Terriable software. Dock is USB 1.1 (whats the point?) If you want the software to work (barely) you have to disable your anti-virus. Bad supportline.

Other Thoughts: PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY. This thing is the worst.

Rating + 5 Not the greatest

Pros: - Very mice screen
- Like the buttons
- The cross navigation feature is unique
- Nice customer support

Cons: - Gigabeat Room software is aweful
- Music files muct be encoded in order to play
- No video feature
- Cheap headphones

Other Thoughts: Upon buying this product I experienced problems within a week, certain music files stopped playing all together. I reformatted the gigabeat hopping that this would fix the problem but the gigasystem wouldn't reinstall. Within 7 days of ownership I already had to send it to the Toshiba Repair Depot. When I got the gigabeat back a week and a half later I still encounter problems.

Rating + 3 Not Good

Pros: Graphic on the screen are cool. Docking cradle is a definite plus for a fixed location.

Cons: Software is terrible, like the other reviews states - it locks up in XP, logic for placing files is poor. I use this in a commercial application - under heavy use the player will lock up.

Other Thoughts: For a sturdy Mp3 player, I had much better luck with Creative. They build a solid and dependable unit. If you just want the flashy graphics and don't push it too hard this player is OK.

Rating + 4 Yes, it can copy MP3's without the lame protection...

Pros: Great sound. Lots of storage. Very solid build. Can copy files back and forth with Windows Explorer VERY quickly.
Handles photo's with slideshow viewing

Cons: Absolutely Horrible software. Install it so it places all the proper drivers, then use Windows Explorer for direct file copying from you computer.
Poorly written manual.
Poor picture handling

Other Thoughts: I had just read the review from BigBob stating you couldn't use the Gigabeat as a backup drive coping your mp3's back to your computer if needed. I thought, Yes you can, so I took a look at my gigabeat files. When I first started copying my 17 gigs of mp3's to it, I hadn't installed the software and driver that came with it. So the first half of my files copied Incredibly slow and had a little lock next to each file when viewed in my computer as a drive. After installing the device on a different USB port and installing the sftware that came with it, suddenly, everything copied to the gigabeat(still coping with Windows Explorer) in a relative flash...I'm talking 6 mintues for 10 gig instead of an hour. These files no longer showed a lock by the file in windows explorer & now copy properly back to the computer, unencrypted. If you copy mp3's to your computer with the included gigabeat software, yes, it does encrypt the file & it won't play back on your computer when copied back.

Rating + 3 A real mixed review

Pros: Good price. Good battery life. Liked the touch navigation. Charging and USB combo docking cradle. Feels like a solid unit. Sound very good. Big clear colorful display.

Cons: Encrypts the MP3 files. Can not use to store MP3 files. Gigaroom s/w is awful. Power plug on charging cradle won't stay in. Instruction manual is a confusing translation from Japanese into English in too many places.

Other Thoughts: I returned the unit due to the encryption of the MP3 files. I wanted to be able to use the 40GB HDD as a backup archive for my other MP3 players. You can not d'load MP3 files from the gigabeat back to your computer. What was Toshiba thinking when they did this?

Rating + 3 Didn't Like It

Pros: Pretty small for a 40GB, but then again all MP3 players are small now.

Cons: Where do I begin.

First of all the software it comes with, "Gigabeat Room" doesn't work 100% correctly. It will crash or give you errors (you can do a google search and confirm this, it did not only happen to me).

Also the "cross" navigator is not good, it's not nearly as sensitive enough and not very smooth. Plus there are no "clicks" every time you press it which greatly helps.

It's somewhat cheaply made. From the pictures it would appear very sturdy but it's not.

Here's the worst part of this thing. Unless you use the included software, which really isn't usable, then you can use WMP, but you'll be FORCED TO USE USB 1.1 instead of 2.0! That totally stinks, not good Toshbia. Oh and I didn't like the fact that you have to use a cradle, added unneccessary componet. You don't need the cradle if you use Gigabeat room (USB 2.0), but if you can't get the software to work then you'll have no choice but to use the cradle which forces USB 1.1.

Other Thoughts: I sent this back, took me six calls to newegg to get a "customer service rep" to finally give me a RMA number. One girl even told me that "the guy who will be giving me the RMA # is out to lunch". I think she was out to lunch.

I went to a local store and got a 60GB black ipod. WAY better. Ipod's touch circle thing they have going is unmatched. Plus with the newest Winamp (version 5.2) you can simple plug ipod in and it will show up in the media library, and transfer at USB 2.0 speeds!

Rating + 5 Pretty Nice

Pros: Lots of storage space!
Fairly Small.
Menus are easy to Navigate.
I didn't even download any of the software. I just plugged it in and used WMP.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I'd take it over an ipod any day! and it's cheaper!

Rating + 5 Solid when upgraded

Pros: Sound quality is very good, menus are simple and easy to use, and the touchpad is the perfect sensitivity. The high resolution screen makes picture viewing useful

Cons: it's picky about how songs are tagged, and sometimes songs from the same artist will be seperated into different groups

Other Thoughts: Although it takes some getting used to, the gigabeat becomes very easy to use. There are some hidden quirks not described in the manual, but can be very useful. I highly suggest upgrading the firmware. This will provide better sound quality, reorganized menus, and many other upgrades. there are some fan sites that share information about how to use all the hidden features of the gigabeat, such as mygigabeat.com.

Rating + 3 Horrible software

Pros: The hardware is nice, sound is good. For the price, this seemed like the best device for the capacity offered, and features.
It has a nice fearture that you can use the device to back up digital camera pics if you are on the road and need to clear you camera storage. You can transfer MP3's to it unencrypted (or any files) but cannot play them.
However...

Cons: The software is just terrible.
"Gigabeat Room" constantly hangs, and even killing the process does not allow you to restart it. I must reboot every time it hangs, which is quite often. I have a very large library I'm trying to populate the player with, and it has been nothing but headaches. Apparently you can use WMP to transfer as well, but only at USB 1.1 speeds. Also, I was not aware that this device used encryption. Unless you transfer files with the device software or WMP, which encrypts the files, you cannot play the files.

Other Thoughts: I mean really, what is the point of encrypting files on the player? How will that have any impact on file sharing? I would have like to have the device function as a backup for all my music files on my computer, in the event of a hard drive crash, I could have simply copied filed from the player to the HD, but once the files are encrypted, forget it.

Rating + 5 Gigabeat Rules!

Comments: I just got my new Gigbeat Player and I'm really impressed by the quality of the sound that is produced by this MP3 player. It's great! I also like the way the case looks with the brushed metal on the case. I also didn't have any issues with the Giga room software like some of the other customers have refered to.

All in all, a great player!

Rating + 5 Great Player

Comments: When I was out initially looking for a large mp3 player to buy that could hold all of my music, I came across the Gigabeat. Many of the reviews said that the player was horrible or that the software didn't work. I've had this player for 2 months and I have only ever had one problem. That problem was getting the driver to install. The manual said to hook it up to the computer through the USB and the driver would automatically load. For me it didn't until I tried hooking it up to the deck and then hooking it up to the computer(while being plugged into the power outlet). Besides that, I've had no problems. Many people at my work have iPods and were very jealous of my player because of its sleak look and color screen. The softwere for this player is very straight forward and in my opinion, these people who say it makes no sense shouldn't even be using a computer if they can't figure it out. All in all, the sound quality rocks, its never froze up on me, i'm able to play it through my car speakers, and I was even able to set my own pictures as wallpaper on the player. I don't know how good the headphones provided with the player are cause I use my own, but besides that I would easily recomend this player to others.
