great unit
Pros: • compact and good-looking • very accurate • picks up signals inside of buildings • initial lock-on quite rapid • doesn't get easily confused by trees, buildings, etc. • exceptional battery life (car use, low backlight setting) = 20+ hrs with fully charged NiMH batteries (2650 mAh) • water-resistant (i have no concerns about using it in rain or ocean spray) • usb can be used to power the unit • batteries not required to operate (see usb above) • has a few built-in games, if you're really bored • can store and use at least tens of thousands of custom POIs -- probably many, many more • huge selection of high-quality garmin-brand maps • very large selection of free online maps (search)
Cons: • screen colors are bland and somewhat low-contrast • no ability to download aerial photos • joystick only goes in cardinal directions, not ordinal too (i.e. won't go SE or NW, just N, S, E, W) • joystick navigation (to view a route, for example) is painfully slow; it should have an acceleration function • base map comments by others are accurate -- it's pretty dismal, and just enough to get the unwitting to buy expensive maps • usb does not recharge batteries (i asked garmin support) • menu system is well laid-out but complex • no "drop me here" function (instead, one must use the find, and hope it's on your map) • add-on maps (by garmin) are really really expensive. DO go search online for free ones
Other Thoughts: disclosure: i didn't buy this from newegg -- i had massive store credit and got it for cheap at an outdoors store
note to the wise: do NOT treat it as waterPROOF, which is an entirely different classification than water resistant. it is not waterPROOF, and only specialized, expensive models are. this unit will take splashes and shallow brief immersion by design, but please don't think it floats or is made to be dunked. one user reports that it took this abuse -- excellent news -- but i'm not going to test that ;-)
overall a very nice little unit, an incredible upgrade from /cough/ my very old garmin 12. would really have liked a joystick that goes eight directions, and for the unit to have the ability to superimpose aerial photos like some more expensive units can.
comments concerning "cheap plastic" seem a bit misguided, since its outer case is tough, possibly aluminum.
i downrated an egg mainly because of the joystick nav issues. these should really have been dealt with i

maps...
Pros: Small, light, nice color, seems very responsive. Good for geocaching if you have the right maps......
Cons: base map is garbage. only has the freeways in my town, no major streets. also, maps will cost you around $100. :/
Other Thoughts: nice product, but be prepared to spend the same amount on maps as you did on the unit.

Buy This!
Pros: Amazing GPS. Exceeded my expectations in every category. super accurate, fully featured. I have a friend who is an army sniper. He just came home from Iraq, and said these are the GPS they use out there because they are better than the army ones. That impressed me because I would imagine the army gives recon teams some of the better GPSs that they have! So far it has rained almost every time I've gone out to use this thing, so the water proof feature is a HUGE plus. Much more important than I originally though it would be.
Cons: For all of the features this GPS has the instruction manual is pretty pathetic. My wireless mouse came with a manual about the same size :/ That is why I didn't give 5 out of 5 stars. Also the software isn't the greatest when you are use to working with google earth, but there is software that allows you to transfer waypoints and tracks between the two. The base map it comes with is pretty much featureless, to entice you into buying one the the expensive add-on maps. there are however, plenty of other free maps out there....... do some homework........ *cough* google *cough*
Other Thoughts: I recommend the belt carrying case because the belt clip alone doesn't work so well, and sometimes you want to keep it out of your pocket to record tracks. Get a memory card for it. With how low the price is on a 4GB card, why not have more map space than you can fill. It cost me less than the carrying case.

Extremely Satisfied.
Pros: I dont really have anything negative to say about this unit. I am currently stationed in Northern Iraq, and have been using this GPS unit for about 6 months. I receive reception inside buildings, whether they have a steel or concrete roof. I have never lost reception during dust storms or other types of interference. I have dropped this unit in water (submerged) had it rained on, had fuel spilled on it, and just about every other type of shock that you could put this through and it still operates as if it was brand new.
Cons: None whatsoever
Other Thoughts: Generally I put my unit through a more rigorous routine then most of you would put it through hiking/biking, etc. It has excellent reception capabilities and is extremely durable. There were some previous reviews about what type of material the backing was made of, someone stated that it was made of some kind of 'cheap plastic.' It is actually made out of either a zinc or an aluminum diecast. It is extremely durable all the way around.

Great handheld GPS!
Pros: I mainly purchased this unit for geocaching, but i quickly began using for street navigation as well. This is my first GPS unit and i had no problems learning how to use any of it's features.
Cons: The city navigator map pack should be included. After one week of use the unit would not power on when plugged in to a USB port. It would have gotten a 5 rating if not for this. I had to return it to newegg for a replacement.
Other Thoughts: after getting used to having this in my pocket.. It was VERY hard waiting for the replacement to come. Get the city navigator! It increases the units use ten fold.

Great Device
Pros: Everything I expected and more. Its a great device that will come in handy in many situations.
Cons: I just wish the cursor could go diagonal as well as vertical and horizontal. Although I have never seen a GPS application that allowed diagonal scrolling it would be a nice feature to have.
Other Thoughts: Its smaller than I imagined. Its the perfect handheld size.

Buyer beware
Pros: small, rugged, clear screen, expandable
Cons: slow, can crash, weak sensor
Other Thoughts: Beware, the reason these units are on sale is that they appear to be using Garmin's "Bravo" brand chipsets rather than the newer MediaTek chipsets that are featured in most external reviews. The newer chipset consumes less and is higher sensitivity.
In light of the above, take special note of the limited return policy on this item.
Otherwise the unit performs as advertised, and is incredibly small for its feature set. Locks up hard occasionally (once a day), but can be rebooted.

GeoCaching
Pros: Easy to use, Many features that you will learn to love. Perfect for Geocaching, aside from trail/road usage. I tested the HCX and the standard. This one loads/sync's up extremly fast. Good job Garmin!
Cons: 20 -25 hours on AA's. I think at this day and age we could do better, but that is it.
Other Thoughts: If you are looking at this, you have already made up yuor mind :)
