Rating + 4 Harmony

Pros: It works PERIOD.

Cons: NONE.

Other Thoughts: I use this in combination with a Logitech Harmony 670 remote to control a receiver, tv, and HTPC. And, with updates from Logitech a few months ago, I can even control the mouse with the Harmony. Note: Although the remote portion of this package works great, I only use the IR receiver that comes with this package which is why I only gave it 4 eggs (5 eggs if you're only interested in the IR receiver).

Rating + 3 Horrible Manual

Pros: It works great if you only need it for MCE and nothing else.

Cons: The instructions in the manual for programming the volume keys do not work, and customer service is non-existent.

Other Thoughts: If you only have a computer with computer speakers it's fine, but if you are using it for an HTPC where you want it to control the volume on the amp look elsewhere.

Rating + 5 Good enough

Pros: Works with XBMC on Windows 7 out of the box (possibly with an automatic driver download).

Cheap.

Cons: XBMC doesn't recognize all of the buttons - I installed IR Server Suite, after which I would consider it good enough. Some buttons still don't do anything, and I haven't had the opportunity to look into custom keymapping.

Comfortable in hand while navigating menus (good button placement), but the play/pause button cluster is a bit too far down - but really, I'd rather navigate comfortably than pause comfortably.

Other Thoughts: I've only tried this on Windows 7 x64 w/ XBMC.

If you install the IR Server Suite, (at least) some input is interpreted as keypresses and is passed to the active window - I haven't done more than press OK to clear dialog boxes, so I can't say anything about how well it works.

I'm getting another.

Rating + 5 Great Little Add-on

Pros: Using this remote with windows 7 home premium 64bit. All I did was plug it in and it worked. I use this to control media center, media player, and iTunes. Great button layout. I haven't used any of the other options like the colored buttons on the bottom or the channel buttons, but I'm pretty sure they work well. Very sturdy construction, and light. The ir reciever is very small. From the pictures, it looks big. But it really isn't. And it has a nice long usb cord so you coud place it any where you like. Got it as a xmas gift. I love it.

Cons: It hasn't happened yet, but I could see the graphics on the buttons fadeing. But I guess that's just normal wear and tear of the product.

Other Thoughts: Happy New Year Everybody!

Rating + 4 Cheap, works well.

Pros: It works great with Linux, the layout is pretty good. It isn't very expensive. The receiver is unobtrusive. LOTS of buttons.

Cons: It has a humongous windows logo on a button. The buttons aren't backlit. A bit bigger than I expected, but not too bad.

Other Thoughts: Great if you just need a cheap remote.

Rating + 5 Oh Yeah! Da Kin Stuff!

Pros: Built as well as most of the commercial stuff- I got this specifically for my HTPC/60" system- works GREAT!!

All buttons funtion (except the silly colored teletext buttons that aren't supported in this country, but, worldwide standards being what they are...I'll let that one go. This is truely a "Standardized" item- it works as advertised!

Additional reason I chose THIS item was because it includes the infrared receiver- plugs right into the USB port, and 7/64 recognised it without installing any drivers. Works just like any standard IR remote control. Perfect!

Cons: It won't bring me coffee.

Other Thoughts: Yup- if you have MCE, this is what you want- unless you want to get something like a Sony AV2400 remote...

I wanted the "standard" item, and this IS the "standard" item.

Running 7/64 Ultimate- and it's been perfect!

Pros: + works out of the box with Windows 7, hulu desktop, MCE netflix, media player, sling player

Cons: - one egg removed because does not work with Windows MCE 2005. ended up buying a new PC to install windows 7

Other Thoughts: included remote doesnt have keys that will control with pandora one desktop (v2.0.0), however the receiver included can receive mce ir keyboard codes. does not control VNC out of the box

Pros: Works out of the box with Linux (Ubuntu)

Cons: Massive brightly-colored Windows logo embedded in the middle of the remote

Other Thoughts: This is a decent remote to use for a home theatre PC. Bear in mind that it's not programmable and can't be used to control a TV or other devices.

Rating + 5 Dude - so easy to install in Windows 7

Pros: This remote was the easiest thing to install ever on my Windows 7 64-bit operating system. Plus the USB receiver into the back of your computer and Windows installs what it needs to instantly. Click a button on your remote and it all just magically works.

I disconnected my mouse and keyboard from my Media Center, launched the Media Center application, went to TASKS and was able to ShutDown the entire PC with the remote.

Cons: (none)

Other Thoughts: The IR-Receiver is really small, which is great. I was expecting somethign much wider and bigger. But it's actually about one inch wide by two inch in length.

Rating + 5 Good, inexpensive remote

Pros: Works flawlessly under MythTV/Linux. Setting up custom assignments for buttons is not difficult.

Cons: The constantly flashing red LED on the receiver gets annoying. It appears to be picking up noise from the television/other devices, because when everything is turned off it doesn't flash.

Other Thoughts: It's an inexpensive remote and it does the job, so I can't complain.

Rating + 5 Excellent Solution with XBMC and Harmony 550

Pros: IR sensor is a lot smaller in real life than in photo, its only about 2" long, 1" wide, and 1/4" tall...if that.

Price was best I could find

New egg has pretty colors on its site

Cons: Not really a con, but i just needed an IR sensor for my harmony 550, and this was the cheapest option.

Other Thoughts: This receiver works well with a logitech harmony 550 i bought as well on newegg, he only caveat being that I had to do some tweaking in XBMC to get all the buttons to work. This thing performed great for me after about 15 minutes of tweaking. I can't calim anything for the remote itself, since I didn't use it, but receiver works great!

Rating + 4 As Advertised

Pros: Works well for Vista OS. Zero problems, no drivers to install.

Cons: 1) Absolutely does not work with MCE 2005 (tried for hours). Believe me, if this worked on 2005 I would have gotten it working, it doesn't.
2) No backlit buttons (hey, for 20$ what do you expect)
3) Button layout is slightly different from standard MS version (will drive you nuts if you own both, especially in the dark)
4) As far as I can tell, the power button is not programmable, so you'll still need your TV remote to turn off/on the TV.

Other Thoughts: Overall, this is exactly what I needed. I was disappointed to find I couldn't get it working on MCE (I ended up reinstalling Vista on my laptop for this thing). Not a huge deal, but still. Standard MS remote is 130$ (if you can still find one). I'm really surprised noone is making exactly the same remote since mine works so darn good on 2005,vista and w7. I guess MS is still keeping anyone from copying this design. Anyways, you get what you pay for here, the remote works as advertised, but you don't get leather seats and power windows. Beats a wireless keyboard by a long shot though. Happy egging!

Rating + 4 Terrific Windows 7 MCE or Vista MCE remote.

Pros: Works great with:
Windows 7, Vista media centers
Boxee
Media Portal
XBMC (thought functionality is limited out of the box, you need to tweak the buttons via cfg)
It works, it's cheap

Cons: This is not that big a con as it IS advertised as a Vista MCE remote: It does not work with XP MCE, there are supposedly fixes to get it half working as a generic IR device but none of the tips I found worked.

Other Thoughts: This is a nice remote for the price, I won't be heartbroken when my kids destroy it. The build quality seems pretty sturdy, I think it'll hold up for a while.

I am deducting an Egg because the manufacturer does not include of any kind of remote customization software with this remote. There are a grand total of 9 buttons that launch Windows MCE, maybe I'd like to customize those to launch something else??

If you only plan on using Windows 7 MCE or Vista MCE this is a terrific remote.

Rating + 5 Works Out Of The Box With XBMC LiveCD

Pros: Good solid feel to it, not like one of those dinky little remotes that feels like it'll break in your hand.

Other reviewers have come down one side or the other on whether this remote works with XBMC. All I can say is, worked great for me and the 9.04 XBMC LiveCD, auto-recognized from the get-go. Button mappings nearly perfect.

Cons: Button mappings nearly perfect. A couple of them didn't quite do what I'd expected, but all things considered I'm pleased with the results.

Other Thoughts: Bought this as part of a package deal to build a simple HTPC, haven't got around to picking up a HD yet but luckily the LiveCD worked great.

Rating + 5 It works.

Pros: It plugged right and worked with both XP MCE and Vista. No drivers needed.

Cons: None. My Xbox360 uses the same IR commands for it, so its a blessing and a curse. I use my Xbox to view streamed video from my PC, and the remote makes things a little easier, but must unplug the USB receiver from the PC.

Other Thoughts: Got it free as a combo with Antec Dreamer II case, otherwise I probably would not have bought it.

Rating + 1 Receiver LED blinks annoyingly

Pros: Remote seems to work okay, fits in the hand nicely.

Cons: Play button is huge, but pause button is tiny. Too easy to mistake "play" for "ok" when just fumbling with remote.

On Windows 7 RTM, the red LED blinks *constantly*, seemingly at random. If this is intentional, it's ridiculous -- who thought that would be a good idea???

Other Thoughts: The LED thing is enough to torpedo an otherwise serviceable product. Devices like this should be unobtrusive. If you're going to put an LED on an IR receiver, it should only illuminate while it is registering a button press on the remote.

I don't need things blinking at me while I'm trying to watch a movie!

Pros: Looks somewhat nice to use

Cons: Does not work with windows 7 RC from what I can tell. Once the computer goes to sleep and returns, it stops working forever in that usb port. I've only seen it working once... I'll spend more money next time as I think I got what I paid for...2 AA batteries.

Other Thoughts: I should not have bought this as a combo, waste of money.

Pros: Everything works out of the box with Mythbuntu.

(disclaimer.. I don't like the default keymappings in mythbuntu, so I re-mapped them. I can't confirm if all of the buttons work with the default mythbuntu keymappings)

Cons: The remote is "no-frills"

Other Thoughts: I only used the remote for a few weeks, as I only wanted the USB ir receiver to receive the signals from my Logitech Harmony remote. I couldn't find a way to buy the USB receiver by itself.

Cons: Garbage. Fought with XBMC and this thing for days.

Pros: Works out of the box with Ubuntu 9.04. Set it up with XBMC, also no problems. Configured it to suspend and resume with the Power button, all works flawlessly.

Cons: Well, it's a cheap remote, so you get what you pay for. No backlighting, feels a bit clunky and cheap. But again, it works great and is cheap.

Other Thoughts: The IR receiver is worlds better than the Hauppage PVR-150 one that I had been previously using. Supposedly the polling of the IR chip destroyed incoming signals, so it always stuttered if you held down a button. With this remote, you can hold down a button and there's no problem picking all of them up significantly faster. Fantastic!

Rating + 5 I LOVE IT

Pros: It works very well with my Vista laptop. Tell Nvidia drives to use the TV as the only display and press the little green button! Windows Media lets me add stuff to it's library that is located on my NAS server. I really love this. I can play on the computer in the back of the room and not have to run up to the laptop to pause my show or start a new one. Listening to music using the surround system is easier now too.

Cons: Can't think of any

Other Thoughts: Good range - I put the receiver on top of the big screen and I can put the remote just about anywhere.

Pros: Works very well for me.

Cons: A little red light on the reciever flashes everytime it gets and IR signal. Apparently we have alot of stray IR, the thing flashes fairly frequently with no remotes being used. (-1 star)

Rating + 4 Good for what it does - in Vista/W7

Pros: Cheap. Just plugs in and works in Vista MCE or Windows 7 MCE. Am told it works in Linux fine too, but I haven't tried.

Cons: Absolutely will NOT work in XP Pro, no matter what you try. I've tried every suggestion listed here and elsewhere; no go. I'm OK with using Vista, but would it really be that hard to provide XP drivers? Meh.

Other Thoughts: Didn't need the remote, just the receiver. Remote looks OK, but nothing special. I'm using it with a Logitech Harmony, and for that it works perfectly.

Rating + 5 Nice for the Price

Pros: Cheap. Remote build quality is decent. The little activity light is a nice addition. For Vista you just plug in it and go. If you want a remote for media center, this is the one to get.

Cons: I don't like silver remotes. No learning. No blaster. (But for the price, who cares.)

Other Thoughts: I own two of these remotes. One controls a stand alone PC, the other controls an HTPC in my entertainment center. For the HTPC I recently picked up a universal remote and programmed it to replace this one. Didn't work at first. Apparently some of the buttons on the remote alternate signals to try and eliminate false double presses. Cool thing is, you can disable this in the registry. The registry key is LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\
Services\HidIR\Remotes\745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da. Set EnableDebounce to zero.

Pros: No driver disk needed, Vista did all the work.
Incredible range. 25' across the room and it was going strong!
Excellent value.
Tiny red LED indicator lights up in the IR receiver when it receives signal. Nice touch for determining the range of the remote.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I bought this specifically to add an IR receiver to my HTPC for my Logitech Harmony 720 remote. Both the original and the Harmony 720 work with the IR receiver like champs.

Cons: Poor documentation regarding learning abilities, requires a lot of user research & trial&error, front surface is smooth but has a grainy appearance at some angles.

Other Thoughts: The device is advertised as 2 channel and supporting learning. However, the learning function documented in the manual does not work. No information either about how to use the IR blaster. After trying several tools, like HIP, Girder, with no luck, finally found an excellent free tool to reprogram any of the buttons on the remote called LM Remote Keymap on the web. I even programmed those colored buttons that other reviewers said they couldn't make functional. After finding this tool, the remote does 100% of what I want it to do and it's a great product.

Pros: It works with my Xbox 360 and my Vista x64 Ultimate media center. I push play, the movie plays. I push stop, the movie stops. HUZZAH!

*Also the IR receiver works with my Harmony 880*

Cons: Doesn't cure cancer.

Other Thoughts: I really only wanted this for the IR receiver. I primarily use the Harmony 880 remote. As I said above, it works.

Rating + 5 Great for MythTV

Pros: Works in Ubuntu after installing the LIRC package. Able to use it with MythTV and Mplayer. Great price compared to other brands.

Cons: No mouse control.

Other Thoughts: Would have liked to have been able to use this to control the mouse, but it is not that big a deal when using it for a HTPC.

Rating + 5 Great Deal

Pros: Just opened the box, installed the remote, and im using it. Im not quite sure why others gave it a bad review... its a REMOTE CONTROL, what do they expect it to do? For about 20 bucks you get a remote that lets you control media center. I have vista, like your SUPPOSED to have (this is a vista remote) and worked right outta the box. No more having to use the keyboard/mouse to browse around. I can sit back on my couch.

Cons: Like some said, it wasn't free.

Other Thoughts: If you are doing a HTPC setup, BUY THIS REMOTE. Don't do what I did and go "ehh i'll buy it later" just cough up the few bucks now and get it.

Pros: Nice having a remote to control vista.
Cheap.

Cons: All documentation states this model is capable of learning the TV remote functions. Called support and was told the factory made the mistake using incorrect documentation. Guess I get to use neweggs RMA process...

Other Thoughts: I have no other thoughts...at all

Rating + 4 Can work with XP

Pros: Adds IR support to Windows. Useful for Windows Media Center and/or Xbox Media Center, Boxee, etc.

Cons: Artificially Vista-only. A simple hack allows it to work under XP.

Other Thoughts: Does not work under XP by default but I copied the device PID from Device Manager and added a section in irbus.inf with that info. Windows loads it as a generic IR device.

Pros: Nice remote. Great WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor), works right out of the box with Vista 64-bit. Sometimes you seem to have to press a button more than once though. Nice remote for the price

Cons: I think I may end up buying a Dinovo Mini anyway from Logitech.

Pros: I have Windows Ultimate, 32-bit, fully loaded. I also have a HP Smart Media Server with 2TB of storage and with over 930 movies on 720P DivX files, and more. I also have a projector. The combination of all of them, give me the opportunity of controlling all my media with one control. I love it.

Cons: Only works with Vista. I tried to used with with XP Media Center SP3, and all the drivers that I could find, and I could make it to work. The problem is with the drivers for the IR, probably they only make drivers for Vista.

Other Thoughts: I will get another withing 2 weeks to send it to my brother.

Pros: Remote works, IR reciever is pretty sensitive and picks up signal anywhere in the room. No drivers needed. The remote controls Power DVD and VLC media aswell.

Cons: None really.

Other Thoughts: I didn't use the remote, I have a harmony remote but needed the IR receiver to control my computer. The remote works with the IR receiver with no problems at all.

Rating + 4 Great Remote

Pros: -Easy set up
-Works with many programs
-Great range

Cons: -Remote feels flimsy

Other Thoughts: Just plug it in and your good to go. The remote worked with PowerDVD 8 and Vista Media Center. I haven't tried it on anything else.

I docked 1 egg from the rating just because the remote feels like it could break if it was dropped.

Pros: Cheap!

Cons: Cheap! Worked for one day, after a lot of fiddling with it. The transceiver stopped responding to remote commands after a reboot. The red led stays lit continually. The transceiver is recognized, but will not respond at all.

Other Thoughts: Other reviewers mention the remote works fine with other media center PC's. My situation is the same, the remote works fine, the transceiver is garbage. I too cracked it open to find poor quality solder joints, as well as a crack in the circuit board. It's too bad zero eggs is not an option!!

Rating + 4 Great Remote, a few quirks

Pros: Feels great in the hand, the buttons are wisely placed. Great price.

Cons: A few oddities. First, the RF receiver is VERY sensitive. Keep it WELL away from the computer and TV (a USB extension will help), as even the computer’s HD will sometimes trigger it. I also learned that the RF receiver built into the laptop is also triggered by the remote. I have to stretch out my arm far away from the laptop to ensure that I don’t start up MCE on both the TV AND Laptop.

However once I made some changes to where I placed the RF receiver and the laptop these annoyances went away.

Other Thoughts: I wished the power button would TURN OFF the computer and not just put it in stand by.

Rating + 1 buyer beware

Pros: remote works fine, looks and feels good.

Cons: transceiver doesn't work. Same deal as another review that I saw here, the transceiver arrived non-functional. Both Windows Vista and lirc under Linux recognize the transceiver device when plugged in via USB, but it never gets commands from the remote. Remote itself works fine, I tested it with 2 other eHome compatible transceivers I have, but the transceiver that came with this remote is a busted up piece of garbage. Not a big deal for me because I have spare transceivers, but for anyone who doesn't I'd recommend another remote. I wish Newegg had the official Microsoft branded MCE remotes in stock, never had a problem with those.

Rating + 5 great remote for the money

Pros: Tested the range to 15+ feet. Works out of the box with LIRC using Mythbuntu Control Centre for automatic configuration Button mappings are pretty extensive in MythTV. It's nice that there's a red LED for confirmation that receiver and remote are working.

Cons: Wish the receiver was smaller and easier to mount in tight spaces. (I'm using it in a Lascala LC-20B without the VFD and I'd like to mount it where the VFD goes)

Other Thoughts: All in all this is a great remote for the price. No hassle set-up in Linux.

Rating + 2 Bad IR Reciever

Pros: Worked well when it worked

Cons: IR receiver was recognized by Vista but was very flaky when it came to receiving commands from the remote. Finally, I had it working for about a week as long as you didn't touch the receiver.
Once it was moved for dusting the tv< I could not get the thing to recognize the remote again. Cracked the case and found bad solder joints and just really bad quality over all. So you get what you pay for I guess.

Pros: Plug and play on Vista ulitmate on a home made HTPC. Works like it should, took 30 seconds to set up.

Cons: A bit of Velcro could have added to the package to aid in placing the IR receiver. It’s not hard to find, it just would have been nice get it in the package rather then run to the store...isn’t that what shopping online is all about ;)

Pros: Decent remote. I liked the size and feel.

Cons: Didn't work on arrival.

Other Thoughts: When I plug in the IR Receiver, the light stays red and will not respond to the remote. The remote itself works if I use it on one of my other Media Center PCs. Therefore, I think the problem is with the IR Receiver.

Pros: It's a nice remote, at a great price. The remote is lightweight and the main button mapping doesn't feel too different from a TV remote

Cons: This package did not come with a IR control cable or something seems to be wrong because when I try to set up Media Center, i get "IR Hardware Not Detected".

Other Thoughts: I think Media Center throws that out on purpose so you can go out an by a M$ Media Center Remote

Rating + 5 Best MCE remote

Pros: This is a great remote, everything is clearly labeled and it works perfectly with Vista MCE. I like the contour of this remote a lot compared to more square remotes.

Cons: Teletext buttons would be nice to be re mappable, maybe for Close Caption channels. They are pretty useless to me.

Power button would be better if it opened the Media Center close dialog rather than automatically hibernating the computer.

Pros: Buttons are well labeled (with words - "Music" "Live TV" etc) - great for users who are unaccustomed to MCE remotes. Lightweight. Good size and feel.

Cons: Silver might not match your other remotes...but it may. Not really a con.

Other Thoughts: Replaced the remote that came with my AverMedia tuner card - this one is much better.

Rating + 5 Perfect so far

Pros: Plug it in and it works - perfectly! Some may think it feels cheaply made, but not me. It feels like a normal remote. Nothing extra special about it other than it looks great and works exactly as expected with Vista.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: I am testing it with Vista right now and tweaking the hardware in my new HTPC but I will try it with Mythbuntu before I call this a done deal. Others report good results with Linux so I'm hoping for the same.

I'll still rate it a solid 5 because it works as advertised, but if it works as well under Linux as it does with Vista it will be even better. For the money I am very satisfied.

I wish it were RF but I knew when I bought it that I would be getting an IR, and the receiver works fine. Just plug it in an available USB port, set the included receiver where the remote can see it and you're done. If you can use a thumb driver you can use this remote - at least with Vista.

Pros: Works excellently with Windows Vista Media Center, along with a lot of other media players. It also feels very nice in the hand - it doesn't feel "cheap" at all.

Cons: Doesn't work with Windows XP at all, some buttons do different things in different applications and some are flipped (Previous/Next tracks flipped with Fast Forward/Fast Rewind)

Other Thoughts: An excellent remote that does what you want it for. My computer is also my TV, and it's a very comfortable remote for channel surfing.

Pros: Easy to install, just plug it in and it works almost immediately. Many different buttons (Radio, Music, Pictures, Video, Guide, Live TV, Recorded TV, etc). Cheap price.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a great remote for vista media center. I would have liked there to be a Zoom button on the remote instead of having to go to Info and then zoom but for the price and all the extra buttons it is definitely worth it.

Rating + 5 A little better than the Gyration !!

Pros: I also own the Gyration MCE Vista Remote. I ordered this one as a backup, however, I prefer this one first. (1) It's much more lightweight_(2) Does more_(3) and you can press the Green button on the remote, from anywhere inside MCE and get to the Tasks Menu, which THE GYRATION doesn't. The cusor buttons are bigger and the reponse time is quicker than the Leading GYRATION, for way less money too.

Cons: None so far.

Pros: Cheap, inexpensive, and great for those without a set-top cable box. Compatible with Vista Home Premium 64-bit Edition.

Cons: After learning the remote, I got the error "IR Hardware Not Detected". The IR receiver has no place to plug in IR emitters to get rid of this problem.

Other Thoughts: It IS a good bang for the buck, just wasn't what I was looking for. I ended up getting this remote's relative... HA-IR01SV, which works great on my set-top box.

Rating + 5 Prior 1 star reviewer should be disregarded!

Pros: Let me first clearly state - I do not not own this specific model; However, the former reviewer apparently cannot read and left a ridiculous review. This is an MCE VISTA remote (please note the VISTA part in caps - hehe). Granted it is nice to know that it will not work under Windows XP, however, it is not at all fair to give this remote 1 star when product is clearly labeled. This remote appears to be identical to the eDATA DEC-200B, which is an excellent remote. Plug-n-play, very easy to use and the same price. Because I don't own this specific device it would not be fair to recommend it, but I just wanted to help balance the review statistic because of the former reviewer's illogical and unfair remarks. If you want to be certain, I can recommend the eDATA DEC-200B, which does appear to be identical in features and - I know - it works beautifully... under Windows VISTA.

Cons: For the reading-impaired (like the former reviewer, hehe), this does NOT work with Windows XP... That's not really a con (more of a "duh") but they require this box to have text in it... plus, I just felt like rubbing it in (hehehe).

Other Thoughts: Again, I recommend the eDATA DEC-200B remote - KEEP IN MIND IT IS A VISTA REMOTE ONLY. ;) NewEgg rocks!!! Fastest shipping and always excellent selection, customer service and A1 packaging!
