Newegg upstanding as always delivering promptly. Cons: Bad reception inside, may not be fault of radio. Main problem is short life. Last week of June decide to change room around and unplugged wall outlet to move, letting it run on batteries(recently replaced) for a few minutes and noticed a little later all it had on the screen was the backlight. No print or letters whatsoever. Completely fubared. Had been working fine for all other power outages that happen here every now and then. Not worth the $50 cost. It is out of warranty and they want $45 plus shipping to repair. So as far as the WR-300, not going to waste another $50 on an item that won't last. This is Midlands fault and not a bad mark against Newegg. Other Thoughts: Going to try the WR-100 to see if any better. If I have the same luck, I won't buy midland products again. It gives us peace of mind when we sleep because we cannot hear the sirens at night. Just be sure to change it so that the alarm does not go off for thunder storms. Easy to set up (once you find the channel that works best in your area), easy to customize what zone you are in, and you can't accidentally turn off the alarm for tornado warnings. Living in the Dallas, TX area, this thing has been a Godsend. Then you can keep the radio enabled for warnings that you need to act on. No unimportant alarms yet. Includes weather radio with 7 channels, AM/FM radio with 3 memory for each. Time and date clock with 1 alarm that can be set to radio or siren. All alerts can be programed. Location codes can be set to your country, state and county. Up to 23 of these codes can be active at once at once. Also includes future alerts that can be programed in if made available to public. N/A Tech Level: high Ownership: less than 1 day This user purchased this item from Newegg	3/12/2009 3:29:39 PM Wow Pros: Warns of flood, fire and iceberg not that I am concerned about the occasional iceberg flowing thu.(I live 1000 miles from the ocean but those icebergs are sneaky devils) It really does have an iceberg warning. Seriously this things for everything including flash floods fire evac. winter storms public notice boil water and most anything else. Two levels for alarm or voice warnings. Three presets for am and fm though this could be a con too as it is not enough. Very easy to setup even without directions. Bright back light for display. It works but then if my house gets hit by an iceberg then I will change the rating to one egg. Cons: none Other Thoughts: Unlike what some one reviewed a time ago about the backlight. All I have to say is read the manual as it spells out clearly and simply on how to adjust the back light. It can be programmed for staying a few seconds or always. Gives the website for your county emergency codes. Offers, radio, national weather, and public service alarms. I never knew there were so many different alarms, avalanche, dust storm, and regular public emergency along with all of the regular tornado and weather watches and warnings. Cons: Nothing so far. Other Thoughts: Last year we had a minimum of 10 tornados within 5 miles of our house, luckily we were awake for all of them and saw the alerts on TV. This unit will sound an alarm as soon as the public service system is activated and wake you like an alarm clock. Nice menu system makes it a breeze. It has never missed an alert or the weekly test transmission. Push button weather Cons: Watch the buttons. This is not a clock radio by its function and appearance and I didn't even realize it had one but the alarm button is a WAKE-UP ALARM, not a WEATHER ALARM. It went off twice before I figured out the weather alert was a separate setting. You will still get a WEATHER ALERT when the ALARM is off but I somehow missed this when I didn't read the manual. Other Thoughts: We've had some bad storms and the alert went off just before they came through. Cant say enough how reassuring this thing is in hurricane season. Lots of static. I guess it needs an ext antenna. I have not had it go off once that i know of. to alert me to a hazard. Pros: I got this Weather radio in the mail and less than 30 minutes later it was up and running. It was very easy to program, and has plenty of features for the price. It gets great signal and has a loud alert noise that could wake anyone up. It picked up a flood alert the first night I got it. Best money I have spent in a long time. Cons: Antenna is very long. About 2 feet tall. Other Thoughts: Feels like a solid product. Of course you can program it to receive the alerts for your area (county or counties), but you can also set it for which types of alerts you want to hear, that you want to be alarmed for. Controls are pretty clear and easy to use. Programming requires having the manual in one hand and programming with the other, but it's not hard. Cons: The one weakness I see is the display. You'd think a clock-radio would have a decent clock display, but in fact the clock readout is smaller than most of the other display components. It's an LCD display, but the visibility limits are partially overcome by the possibility of setting the backlight to be on all the time. Other Thoughts: AM/FM radio is decent. We used to be sitting upstairs not knowing what warnings were active, but now if there is a tornado warning we can get notified immediately and move to safety. Also, anyone can walk in and see the lights indicating a warning/watch/advisory and review the info. I think this is a great investment. It's nice to be able to set it up to only give the warnings/watches that you really care about. Battery backup feature is nice, now when the power goes out or if you need to take it with you away from the power outlet it still works. Cons: Don't buy for daily clock radio use - the buttons, display, and cumbersome setup will drive you nuts. Battery operated in case of power failure with no loss of functionality when removed from 110v house power. Has port for external power and head phones. LED indicators for 3 levels of alarm, warning, watch, advisory lights for duration of bulletin. Small enough to unplug and take along with you to a shelter. Able to select just your county or all to cover and types of notices sent by the S.A.M.E. alert system. Cons: If I really had to add any negatives: Back light doesn't stay on long enough to read scrolling messages, have to keep selecting up arrow to view (probably saves battery power). AM/ FM radio lacks the ability to completely separate adjacent strong stations but is ok to listen to. Other Thoughts: This a great addition to your home emergency preparedness equipment/ to go kit. The day after I plugged this radio in, I got "Warnings" for high winds and severe lightning storms here in the northeast approaching my area. We don't always have the TV or radio on and the alerts are faster on this radio than other media. The cons are not a big deal since having a portable radio is a must as I learned during a freak October snow storm and no electricity for a week. Lastly, have some means of portable emergency power (rechargeable or dry cell) to power this radio 6 volts, scanner, cell phones or other device. Small, and very nice appearance. It doesn't go off for all the test broadcasts. You can even set it up to only go off if your county/area is in the alert. Has batteries plus A/C in case of a power outage. Cons: A little cumbersome to get setup. Reading the instructions is a must even to dial into the nearest radio station. Other Thoughts: I was really impressed with this. I've seen some older ones that went off every half hour on Wednesdays due to the test signal, and couldn't be disabled. This one is MUCH better. It not only goes off just for important alerts, it has lights on the front along with a text display to show you exactly what alert triggered it. It's like a smoke detector for weather! We had ours for about a month before it ever made a peep. Of course, it would be 4AM when a tornado watch was issued and it scared me half to death. But you want it to get your attention, right? I looked at it and the little light by Watch was lit and it said "Tornado" on the display. It went out when the watch expired. As another poster said: "Every home should have one." It's true. After the recent tornados we had here in Arkansas(11 confirmed that night), I said I must get one of these. Well sure enough, the next week we had a few more, during the day when I was at work, and my wife was home. The watch came on first,then shortly after that the warning lights, siren, and voice came on about another confirmed tornado in our county AND city! Wife and dog went too the bathroom, and were safe,thanks too this awesome device! Cons: NONE AT ALL! How can there be??? Other Thoughts: This does EXACTLY what is is supossed too do! No home should be without one, in theses days and times, weather is never the same anywhere anymore. Thank you newegg for the immediate shipping! Cons: Non-removable adapter, adapter housing is quite warm to the touch, cord connection to radio sticks out from the back so you cant sit the device flush against a wall or the head of a bed, alarm switch is on side but is only necesary to keep the alarm from gong off not to shut it off in the mornings. Other Thoughts: Great product from a manufacturer with a good reputation in the radio and hazard alert industries. If you're just looking for a basic weather readio, go with their cheaper model, but if you want the ability to disable notifications for cerain hazard conditions or want a combo weather radio/FM/AM/alarm device, then this is the best one to go with. 2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. The ability to remove or "defeat" any of the weather services alerts you don't care about. Easier to program then the older versions. May more options too. Cons: Only have LOW or HIGH setting for alert volume. I would like to have seen either Medium or even better, a variable selection. The LOW is very low if your not right there. FM radio comes out pretty clear. Also has child-abductions alerts. Cons: Clock digits too small to be used as clock radio so you'll still have to keep another clock radio on your night stand. Display is bright and easy to read. Battery backup is essential and has low-battery indicator. Cons: None really. It does what its supposed to and is appealing to the eye. Other Thoughts: I live in the geographic center of "Tornado Alley"--central Oklahoma. It's essential to be warned for storms and tornadoes. NOAA does a good job of warning and informing about dangerous weather. I have a WR-100 by my bed, and the WR-300 at my desk. I'm no safety nut, but after going through Katrina I can tell you that no electronic gadget at any price will provide you with more useful information than a weather\hazard radio that runs on batteries when the power goes out. Imagine no land line or cell phone for days, no power or cable for the TV, and no way to access the Internet for information. Short of some self protection device and plenty of water, nothing in your storm kit will be as valuable to you and your family as this radio when you lose all contact with the outside world. To make this an actual review, the performance is more than adequate if you are within 50 miles of a NOAA station. The radio stays silent until an alert tone is broadcast and can be turned off if you don't need to hear it. Clarity depends on distance from the tower. If you are within 50 miles it should be fine. S.A.M.E. settings allow you to EASILY set the radio for alerts only in your county Cons: The only con I can think of would be not getting one. Seriously. Other Thoughts: So you don't live in an area where bad weather is an issue. Remember it will also alert you in the event of a HAZARD as well as bad weather, and these days there are many kinds of hazards to consider. Having AM\FM is also a big plus when all local radio, phone, and other communication services have failed. If you are within 50 miles of a weather or other radio station, the AM band will keep you informed of changing events. I personally consider this an investment - not an expense. Nice bright blue display Cons: Volume control knob has a very sensitive taper. It is a very fine adjustment between too loud and too low.
