Rating + 1 Phony one from Onkyo

Pros: Good sound quality

Cons: Phony 7.1 and HDMI specifications, all it does is act as a switch. If you have more than 2 device which have optical or coaxial out then this receiver will not work.

It's a shame that onkyo released this one only 6/7 months back with HDMI logo but basically can't do HDMI audio processing and hence no 7.1 audio also.(unless you have HTPC with 7 audio channel out, if you can deal with so many cables. Not even sure if Bluray drives/Vista will let you take 7.1 audio with their secutiry restrictions.)

Don't be fooled by the pictures of the back of this receiver with so many inputs, only the 4 digital inputs are useful and other's don't matter for AV receiver. If we want a switch you can get one for less than $30.

Other Thoughts: Spend little more and get the 6 series. Good Luck.

Rating + 4 Great Sound

Pros: You just can't beat this kind of sound for this kind of price. Much better than a subcompact system. More in line with what you hear from systems with large speakers all around.

Cons: Has been mentioned, but it's strange to only have HDMI switching.
Did have to "mask" the odyssey mic a little during configuration to really get the sound right. Had a tendency to underpower the center channel and overpower the surrounds. You may ask why I didn't just do it manually, but this was still a very efficient way to set it up.

Other Thoughts: If you want an above average system that won't hurt your wallet too badly, this is the way to go.
I think my downstairs neighbors now hate me...

Rating + 4 System is nice

Pros: Sounds great and priced fantastic. Build quality seems good.

Cons: The metal shell of the receiver was somehow dented in shipment or somewhere before I received it. It appears to only be a cosmetic issue and I'd rather not RMA the unit and have to hassle with all that. My real issue is Onkyo so far. Their website loads pages horrendously slow and all of their web forms for product registration as well as to contact them generate page errors and do not process. I tried calling the USA phone number and was on hold for a while before I had to drop the call to get back to work at my day job. I'm hoping they'll either send me a replacement panel for free or at least let me purchase one. I wouldn't think this metal panel would cost much.

Other Thoughts: Support is important. So far I haven't been able to even make contact with the company so i don't know how service oriented their people are. But if it's this challenging to just get in touch with someone in support, then that's probably not a good sign.

Rating + 4 HDMI Frustration

Pros: It sounds great and the microphone/room sensing technology to optimize the sound quality makes it sound even better. I am also glad the gentleman that lives below me is 90 and deaf because the bass is stellar and loud. The set up was really easy once I figured out how I was going to run all the HDMI cables ect. Its a great system for the price and Newegg shipped it to my house for free. Can't beat it.

Cons: I feel like it will be out to date in a month because the HDMI is only pass through, meaning you need a separate cable for audio even though HDMI carries audio too. How much longer will electronics still have a digital audio output jack? I don't know. However, currently I am running everything through the TV. Additionally, The HDMI pass through technology seems to be the norm for all brands in this price bracket for reasons that are unclear to me. These are all slightly minor but annoying problems.

Other Thoughts: Great Sound!

Rating + 5 Complete Satisfaction

Pros: DISCLAIMER: I am not an accomplished audiophile; I'm just a guy on a budget, who likes good sound.

Very clear, very loud high- and mid-range; very precise bass that smoothly rumbles and hums, doesn't shudder or otherwise lose its footing, except perhaps at volumes higher than I'm willing to test. Powered subwoofer has a clever shutoff logic that applies when it receives little or no signal for more than a few minutes; great for going to sleep while listening to quiet music. Audyssey automated equalizer calibration makes setting your speaker levels a snap. Elegant-but-unobtrusive design aesthetic. Many ports and options. Newegg gave me free shipping and charged no tax on an already-discounted system whose package weighed over 90 pounds. I ordered on Friday morning and picked it up at the local UPS depot on Tuesday afternoon.

Cons: Feature-richness makes the remote a bit of a challenge. It's a 7.1 system, so in order to take full advantage of the system's sound separation, you'll need a space that allows you literally to surround listeners with speakers. I don't have such a space, so my left and right surround speakers are in the wrong place. Receiver pumps 1200 watts, so it's not the most eco-friendly consumer device you could buy.

Can you see that I'm fishing for Cons? OK, OK: wires are a bit skinny for components of this (very high) quality. But if you're reading reviews, you already know that HTIBs always come with chintzy wires.

Other Thoughts: Audyssey automated equalizer calibration neuters the subwoofer. When I set my speakers with Audyssey, I had a feeling that something wasn't right--I heard super-loud and clear mid- and high-range, but suspiciously anemic bass. Increasing the subwoofer's separate power from 50% to 100% and increasing the bass in the system's Tone menu didn't do much.

After finding the manual speaker setup controls, I observed that Audyssey had set the sub to -15dB; I raised this setting and lowered the two other settings. Now I have all the bass I could want, and the option for more bass than any sane person could want. If you live in an apartment, this system can easily trigger a visit from local cops.

Pros: - Great value
- Sound quality is great for movies as well as music
- Wide support for audio formats
- Support for every conceivable input (HDMI, Component, S-Video, RCA, Optical)

Cons: - More inputs that support HD are needed (HDMI, Component, Optical) and less outdated inputs (S-Video, RCA) which mostly go unused
- HDMI is only pass-through, does not decode audio, not a problem for me right now but might be in the future

Other Thoughts: Not many movies make good use of surround sound (with a few notable exceptions) but is awesome for music and concert DVDs.

I have to say, the value is just great.

I've hooked up peripherals as follows:
- PS3 through HDMI video and optical audio.
- Computer through HDMI video and optical audio.
- Comcast cable box through component video and coaxial audio.
- Wii through component video and RCA audio.

I've used up my component and HDMI inputs, so there's more room for expansion. The S-video inputs are unused.

Rating + 5 Awesome

Pros: Just carrying coals to Newcastle here. The reviews are honest, this system brought the movies to life. Great bass, and surround listening modes for every source. I was considering a different system for about $150 less, I'm so glad I resisted the urge to cut corners. BTW, I had this at my door in less than 36 hours from time of order. I can only assume NewEgg has psychics working in the order department.

Cons: Heavier gauge speaker wire (and longer) would have been nice, and maybe I should have known the digital coax and optical cables wouldn't be included. I have my Samsung TV optical output connected but no access that I can find.

Other Thoughts: Beats me what purpose the HDMI pass throughs serve. I have 2 HDMI output DVD players hooked to my TV without redundant(?) cabling. Everything except the TV sound works fine without it. I'm somewhat an audiophile, and playback of CDs is far superior to my old system. Now I have to find someone to buy my old digital speakers. Maybe there's another system out there for twice the price I would like better if it was free.

Rating + 5 Awesome Stereo

Pros: Very loud system, solid bass, good number of inputs.

Cons: No back light on the remote, HDMI Passthrough.

Other Thoughts: For $400 the quality and features cannot be beat. If you are looking for a new stereo/HTIB, this will not disappoint you.

Also, I measured the rear speakers wire to be ~25FT if anybody wanted to know.

Rating + 5 Great System

Pros: I have personally been into Home Audio and Car Audio for most of my life. I finally started piecing together my home theatre setup and I decided to go with this. It's a very nice setup. It look's great with the gloss black on the enclosures, very simple wiring with the color matching, plenty of speaker wire to run it in a decent sized room, and a easy EQ setup if you want to use the supplied microphone. It also has a ton of hook's for many different audio and video components which is always a plus with any AV Receiver. The speakers and subwoofer's sound absolutely amazing and I'd have to say are by far the best you will get in this price range. The Ipod adapter is also a VERY nice feature probably my favorite thing about it. It work's with my Ipod Touch but I have to start up and play the song's myself since it won't change it with the remote. All I'm able to do is change the albums.

Cons: Of course with the good you always have the bad. I would have personally liked to have a little thicker wire. I know with the little amount of power being used the supplied speaker wire is good enough but just having a little bigger would have made me feel better about it. The remote is somewhat of a issue because every code I tried for my TV and DVR won't work so I'm not sure if they left the right code out of the manual or what. The biggest issue with this unit is the HDMI. It need's to be stated more clearly that is does extract the audio from the HDMI cable so you have to run a optical cable or digital coax cable. But since the PS3 and most HD Receivers/DVRs have the optical audio outputs and you can buy a adapter to use with the Xbox 360 it doesn't pose much of a problem.

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a really nice surround sound system for someone not wanting to spend a ton of money. Sure you can get better for more money but the for the price this is a amazing setup. I would highly recommend this system to someone looking for a nice beginner setup. I think this is by far the best Home Theatre In A Box hands down. Better then any of the higher dollar setup's you will find at Best Buy. The only setup's I've personally heard were all custom built setup's that cost twice as much. This would also be a nice receiver to have if you ever want to upgrade the speakers.
