PHILIPS DVP5960
Pros: great playback, slick design, easy to use remote. Plays Divx format and a USB port!
Cons: flash drives work great... but my 750gb external has a hard time connecting. takes a few times power cycling for it to connect.
Other Thoughts: Best DvD player for the money.

Mostly All Purpose DVP 5960
Pros: Plays almost everything I've tried for a few years. I'm on my second one only because I set my first unit up in my kid's room. DVD play is flawless and Divx plays on this unit better than my OPPO which is a bummer since I bought the OPPO to replace this player. USB supports my thumbdrives,WD My Books, and Vantec SATA/IDE to USB Adapter. Display can be read across the room.
Cons: No DTS. HDMI "AUTO" doesn't detect 4:3 so I have to set aspect ratio on my Panasonic TH-42PX60U but the OPPO performs this task flawlessly. USB and non-DVD disc display only 14 characters on the menu and displays files in unsorted order only. USB doesn't support NFTS HDD but FAT32 HDD playback of Divx is almost flawless, some minor video lag. DVD doesn't resume from last played position. Remote is small, no eject function and I had to get another remote after about 16 months of use.
Other Thoughts: Don't FF Divx faster than 8x because it seems to lose audio sync, might just be me. A good all purpose and durable player. Firmware 37.06.42.18

avoid this one
Pros: looks good, blue LEDs easy to read from across the room.
Cons: Locks up frequently during playback. I thought it was just scratched copies of rental discs or faulty divx files, but it even does it with brand-new store-bought DVDs. Remote is not laid out well. Couldn't really tell much of a difference with upconversion (using HDMI cable).
Other Thoughts: I replaced a $30 DVD player with this one and I wish I had my old one back.

Very good value
Pros: Very inexpensive with plenty of bells and whistles given the low price point. I would recommend for someone looking for a solid DVD player at a low cost.
Cons: None that I observed

Great Value
Pros: The upconvert to 1080i is flawless. My old DVD collection looks great on my new LCD. The USB port is a bonus.
Cons: Small Remote. The menu for the USB cuts off the file names
Other Thoughts: If you don't have 1080p, then this is the DVD player for you.

Awesome
Pros: Great quality and performance. Easy to navigate menu.
Cons: Always starts on HDMI Upgade mode. Some videos, like those burned at low bitraes, do not look very good at this resolution. Remote sucks!

Pros: USB port works flawlessly. I only have 1080i so this works for my situation perfectly.

Excelent Quality
Pros: Excellent build quality. USB port and Divx support has come in handy a few times as well.
Cons: I really cant think of any negatives about this device. It simply works.
Other Thoughts: I work at a dealership and we have 6 of these players hooked to TV’s. All of these players have been running for more than a year and a half straight (as in it has been going 24x7 for 1.5 years) and we just now have to replace one. If you do the math 1.5 years x 24 hours per day / 2 hours for an average movie = the equivalent to 6570 DVD movies played. That is impressive for a consumer device. I would recommend this to anyone.

Good DVD Player, but...
Pros: Nice sleek looking DVD player, USB 1.1, decent loading times, recognizes udf file format discs, nice image. I bought this to replace my 3 years old Cyberhome DivX player who's IDE drive slowly stopped reading discs; also, the manufacturer went out of business in the beginning of the year. I paid for that piece about 85 bucks at the time, which included a hdmi cable as well, I think it was cheap. So my review will be a comparison to prev. one.
Cons: Remote is small, I dislike its shape design, has small buttons. There’s no Eject command on the remote; you have to keep the “stop” button pressed(!?). I went into setup and I set sleep after 30mins, but this setting won’t be saved no matter what. Subtitles or closed captions are “on” as well, but I still need to enable them for every new divx it plays. Subtitles are small, white pale onto a grey background, so you’ll need good eyes because you can’t change it. No optical audio out (only coax). While playing divx there’s no time search function, and this sucks big time because if you are watching a movie, and you stop somewhere close to the end, when you wish to go back, you will need to fast forward for a good time. Very short filenames. USB divX works fine as long as you have a good usb stick, movie doesn’t have big bandwidth requirement and you don’t intend to rew or ff too often :-D
Other Thoughts: My unit was build in July 2007, has a firmware version V37.06.42.33 while Philips offers V37.06.42.29 on their website (!?). Don’t make a big fuss about the usb 1.1 port. I read on some forums that this player wasn’t DTS capable in the beginning. Now it is, and mine too. If I’d be able to get this unit’s ide drive and put it in my previous “retired” unit, I won’t think twice…

Excellent Quality
Pros: Plays all supported formats without any problems. Accepts low to middle quality DVD+R & DVD-R media.
Cons: The remote control may be a bit spartan but, it has all of the features absolutely needed.
Other Thoughts: I'm using this DVD player on a non-HD TV and the picture is very sharp.

I LOVE THIS THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pros: Now I can play everything that I want to, from PAL dvd's to dvx movies. This really nice player reflects my reality...allows me to fully enjoy all my media content. The price is really a bargain as far as I'm concerned. The image quality is outstanding...I really mean it.
Cons: Don't lose the remote control or you will be in trouble.
Other Thoughts: My Sony dvd player went into the closet, that thing wouldn't play "anything". Thank you Philips...for inventing the DVD and for making this very very nice product.

I love the USB!
Pros: The USB port on the front is the whole reason I bought it. I can put all kinds of media on a jump drive and play it on my DVD player. Why don't more players have this feature? I have a collection of Divx and Xvid movies that I play from my Jumpdrive. I also download a few pod cast and put them on my jump drive so I can enjoy them in my living room instead of in front of my computer.
Cons: The menu is weak and poorly thought out. It takes forever to boot up and there is not eject button on the remote. I have thought about buying another player and using this just to play media off of my jump drive.
Other Thoughts: I don't have a HDTV so I can't speak to the up converting ability.

Clarifying
Pros: HDMI, HD-upscaling to 1080i, DivX Ultra certified
Cons: HD upscaling only works on the HDMI to a monitor or TV that fully supports HDCP. It does not upscale the component! Upscaling is set this manually through the setup menu or using the button on the front panel. The remote is less than the best but it does, in fact, fast forward using the arrows.
Other Thoughts: The reviewer that said there is not 5.1 audio is incorrect. The PCM audio is encoded on the HDMI cable. So in this case you have to have an HDMI capable receiver to decode the 5.1. The remote CAN fast forward using the arrows. Watch out for HDCP and don't count on the component for anything better than 480p.

Average
Pros: HDMI + upconvert to HD for the price is great. Nice picture. Thin.
Cons: Remote is nearly worthless, must be pointed directly at the unit. No fast-forward, can skip chapters only.

No replacement for HD-DVD or Blue-Ray
Pros: Supports many video formats, has HDMI.
Cons: It doesn't look High Definition when watching anything.
Other Thoughts: This is a great DVD Player. However there's no magic involved on how it converts image resolution. But if you're not ready to buy an HD-DVD Player or a Blue-Ray Disc player get one of these. At the least the color range is expanded.

Decent DVD Player
Pros: HDMI, Compatible with many Formats.
Cons: See other thoughts.
Other Thoughts: I bought this to stay away from the whole HD-DVD vs Blue-Ray Saga. However this device will not make your old DVD's appear crisp and clean as a higher definition player would. At best it keeps them on par with how they appeared in 480i on SDTV.

Worth the money
Pros: I think it's a great price considering the amount features of this product. It upscales great, plays just about any format I've got, and the usb drive is fantastic (and the main reason I bought it). I hooked a Western Digital 250Gb external hard drive and have played movies off of it without any hitches. It's slim.
Cons: The remote could be better. While playing movies off the usb is great, the interface only shows only a few letters of each file. So, if you have a series of movies (such as Lord of the Rings), and all the file names start the same, you won't be able to tell what you are going to play until you play it and see.
Other Thoughts: While I've had my eye on this DVD player on new egg for quite a while. I didn't decide to buy it until I saw it in a local Target...for the same price as new egg and of course I didn't have to pay shipping. But thanks for newegg for listing it and for the many other great products!

Great deal
Pros: Plays any DVD that I throw at it. Plays xvid as well as many of the other common file types (burn to either cd or dvd). HDMI is awesome.
Cons: None really.
Other Thoughts: I haven't tried attaching either a thumb drive or hard drive to it, so I can't say what does or doesn't work. I bought my HDMI cable for nine bucks with shipping, so look around.

Great
Pros: Good looking up-conversion. Has multi sampling for CD's. It also allows you to play AVI's off of thumb drive.
Cons: The remote is pretty bad. Doesn't come with a HDMI cable. Hard drives have to be FAT32 in order to be read by the DVD player.
Other Thoughts: Once you get a HDMI cable, you're mayor of Hi Def town.

awesome picture
Pros: This is an all around awesome dvd player. The upscaling is amazing on my 42". I really like the menu and all of the features it includes.
Cons: As previously mentioned, the remote is terrible. Must power on to eject.
Other Thoughts: There's no reason someone should be spending over fifty dollars on an HDMI cable. I picked one up off of Newegg for less than ten. Works perfectly fine.

Philips DVD
Pros: Nice picture. Very easy setup with HDMI.
Cons: Small remote, limited display, didnt come with a HDMI cable.
Other Thoughts: ya think a HDMI would be included in a product that advertises HDMI. It cost me 52 bucks to get on at radio shack.

Great DVD player
Pros: Great video playback. HDMI output. Will play absolutely any format thrown at it. Seems to turn off by itself if i leave it on.
Cons: None really, the remote does suck sure...but you don't buy a dvd player for the remote.
Other Thoughts: I can basically burn a data disc with Divx videos or AVIs in separate folders on my pc and this dvd player will read it. I have never had or seen a dvd player do this so it's awesome in my book. Suck it sony.

Works Good
Pros: Works very well. Just bought a 32in Samsung and you can really tell a difference over Standard digital signal and the HDMI signal from the DVD player.
Cons: I have a Sony camera that i tried to hook up to the USB to see what pictures look like on it. It didn't work. The remote is a little small.
Other Thoughts: For the price this is the best way to go. I do not want to speed money on ethier HD DVD or Blueray until the winner is clear.

Great DVD player.
Pros: Looks decent. Plays everything. USB is awesome. Great video quality w/ HDMI.
Cons: Remote sucks. USB 1.1 only — fine when connected to an external hard drive, kind of slow with most flash drives. No long filename support.
Other Thoughts: This thing works as advertised.

Excellent player - Great Price
Pros: - One of the best DVD players I have owned. For its price, it does everything they say it will do and then some more. - Will play every kind of disc I throw at it. - Although it says it is a region 1 player, a very easy hack will fix it - making it a region free player. - USB input, will read off from HDD etc - THIS WAS THE USP FOR ME AS I WAS LOOKING FOR A SOLUTION TO CONNECT MY HK RECEIVER TO MY HDD COLLECTIONS. I WAS SAVED HAVING TO BUY AN EXPENSIVE SOLUTION LIKE ROKU ETC.
Cons: Poor build quality. Limited LCD display. Remote is very weak... directionally. Limited hookup.
Other Thoughts: Given all the above, I would still buy it. I returned a $xxx sony player for this. Kudos Phillips.

Best DVD player EVER!!!
Pros: Will play any divx/xvid file. Has usb so you can play from thumb drive or hard drive. I am about to buy another one for my other tv. Will play any kind of DVD +/- R.
Cons: Takes a few seconds to load files. Only lists 6 characters of files on usb drive. Have to aim remote directly at dvd player. Will not play divx files over XXX x 768 resolution.
Other Thoughts: This is one of the best DVD players I have owned!!!

If you're into Divx/Xvid DVD Players this is the 1!
Pros: This player rocks! Plays any AVI format I've thrown at it (Divz, Xvid). HDMI, 1080i, USB input (plays like the DVD drive). Price! FileList on DVD is 14 character naming system, and loads alphabitical.
Cons: Not a Blue Ray are HD, but this hasn't picked up yet to be much of a concern. No S-Video, No optical, Remote sucks. Harddrive only loads 6 character naming system, and doesn't stay in order.
Other Thoughts: All the Pro's make this a Excellent choice. Looks great on my 42" Toshiba 1080p. Setup is easy w/ HDMI. I have a USB 200gig Harddrive hooked up threw the DVD usb input. Plays AVI, JPG, MP3s.

It actually works...
Pros: Plays many, many types of containers and codecs. USB works well. HDMI, USB, and DivX all at an affordable price. I bought this as a replacement for my Philips 642 because of the HDMI alone and was greatly impressed at how it did everything else better. This one uses a different chipset than the 642 that appears capable of so much more – supposedly plays DivX QPEL stuff (though not all Xvid QPEL) and I don’t get the rainbow effect the 642 gave on several MP4s. The sync has held ALL THE WAY through everything I’ve played and the FF & RW works just like a DVD – smoothly.
Cons: Not too many. No optical audio out – I’ve gotta re-arrange my receiver hookups. Takes a LONG time to eject. Eject button doesn’t wake it up from standby – annoying – power on, then eject. Tiny stuff like that.
Other Thoughts: It only claims to support audio through the USB slot, probably because they say it is only 1.1 compatible, but it has played all the same media it would play on a disc. It does occasionally choke on higher bitrate scenes, but overall the thumbdrive feature is very useful – I can finally throw away those painful DVD-RW discs. The DivX Ultra is very neat in theory. I’ve got a few Ultra discs that I am proud to show off, but how much fun are they if you can’t take them to anyone else’s house? Also, I’ve had a terrible time with DivX Ultra authoring software crashing on me. Think I’ll just stick with plain old mpeg-2. Great player, though!

Fantastic!!!
Pros: Plays EVERYTHING thrown at it! (ok I have not tried MOV files). Crisp picture, 5.1 surround, HDMI, easy interface, very sleek thin design, with a small footrpint overall. Easy to upgrade firmware.
The upscaling looks awesome on HD screen.
Cons: The remote leaves much to be desired. Slow loading of DivX files (not really a con, just an observation).
Though it might seem like a cool idea to include audio DSP effects, it really is a waste of technology, and would have reduced the cost another t e n d o l l a r s not to include it.
It would have been more useful to have some digital video functions available, but not necessary if your HDTV is up to par.
Other Thoughts: It is easy to change the region code on this. Setting it to 0 makes it a breeze to play some foreign music DVDs I have purchased over the years.
